“Genetic Improvement of the Beef Industry”

eing a purebred cattle breeder often means different things to different people and as a result not everyone invests in the purebred sector for the same reasons. Some enter the business to exhibit cattle at a local fair or perhaps to win a banner with a national champion. Maybe it is the lifestyle that attracts them as an investor or perhaps it’s an expansion of the commercial cattle herd that they have had for years in an attempt to add more value to their farm or ranch. Most breed associations have junior programs such as the Young Canadian Simmental Association and they are also a source of new purebred breeders who develop their own herds as a result of the experience they gain.

One thing that all purebred breeders have in common, regardless of why they are in the business, is that they choose a breed of cattle to become involved in and are a source of new income and activity for that breed. No matter what the reason for being attracted to the breed they are important to the overall life of the breed and its respective association. The average lifespan of a purebred breeder is seven years, so to maintain this sector of the beef industry a regular inflow of new breeders is required. It can be a steep learning curve for some and one key responsibility that is shared by all purebred breeders is the production and improvement of the genetics for commercial cattle herds throughout North America. This then leads to the question of what training or qualifications are necessary to be a purebred breeder and recognizing that responsibility, are they then better characterized as seed-stock producers?

Training and certification are required to become an agronomist, electrician, cab driver, doctor, lawyer, plumber or accountant. Welders, machinists and construction workers all require training for their professions but what training do you need to do genetic improvement for the beef industry? When compared to genetic improvement used in the poultry, hog and dairy sectors it is safe to say that for the most part, the beef industry has been fortunate that the packers haven’t gained more control of seed-stock production and also that we have survived in spite of the lack of true direction by breed associations who until the last decade have been slow to focus on many of the economically relevant traits of beef production. While that has changed in many of the major beef breeds and there are many breeders that do a great job of using the tools available for breeding selection, there are still some who feel they are able to eyeball the cattle like Grandpa used to without paying attention to tools that predict carcass quality, stayability or other traits that are less visible to the eye. Progressive seedstock producers realize that many of their customers are increasingly demanding more information to make their buying decisions and realize they can’t afford to know less about their cattle than breeders do who are selling in a sale the following day. It is a competitive business and

successful bull sales don’t just happen. It is no longer good enough to simply feed them more and hope to sell them like Grandpa did.

I was fortunate to attend the American Simmental Association’s Fall Focus and 50th Anniversary weekend in Bozeman in late August.

Along with touring the new office and hosting the ASA Committee and Board meetings, a large crowd attended a symposium that featured experts in the field of genetic improvement for the beef industry. Each of the presenters were leaders of genetic improvement in the beef industry and have done work in developing improvements to the tools that breed associations are currently making available to their members. Some of them are also livestock producers themselves so not only talk the talk but are also able to walk the walk. Out of all the presentations the thing that stuck in my mind was not the bell curve diagrams or formulas or calculations, but the comment that one speaker made congratulating those breeders who were in attendance for being some of the world’s leading seed-stock producers who are dedicated to “lifelong learning.”

They were there because they had a genuine interest in the process of and changes to, genetic improvement and how to use all the tools available to advance the quality and predictability of their breeding programs for the benefit of the entire beef industry, as well as their own farms and ranches.

While breed associations, such as the CSA, are responsible for developing new programs and tools for their memberships, they are of little value if those members don’t take advantage of them and of the opportunities and value they present. Education on the usage of these tools and changes to genetic improvement programming requires continual mass communication and sometimes it seems that it is never enough. While that can lead to the feeling of overload to some breeders and despite the banter that sometimes occurs on social media, no association has ever said that science trumps the need for a cattlemen’s eye and common sense when culling or making breeding selections and matings. Everything is needed in balance while considering the needs of their respective market and environment and in today’s competitive beef industry all tools are needed to succeed.

The CSA encourages you to maintain the process of lifelong learning as you work to improve the genetics of the North American beef industry. We would also like to encourage everyone to take a few days this fall to watch some of your customers calves sell and assess how your breeding program is working for them. That personal touch and interaction will benefit you both.

Simmental Tops 4-H Carcass Contest

A

¾ blood Simmental steer tallied the top score in the 2018 4-H Alberta Provincial Carcass Competition.

Ten year old Sierra Brand of Caroline, Alberta entered the steer that topped 45 entries from across the province. All 4-H members taking this 4-H project have their cattle harvested at selected packing plants about May 15, individual carcass measurements and grades are taken, and the corresponding points system resulted in the winners announced during the awards ceremony at Summer Synergy early July at Olds, Alberta.

The steer was sired by a purebred Simmental bull, Excel/ RPCC Red Stubby that came from Ontario, and is out of a halfblood Simmental cow. Sierra purchased the calf from her grandparents, David and Terry Brand of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, raised the calf and kept track of feed records, etc. along with her other 4-H projects of market steer, breeding heifer, canine, and crafts in her first year of 4-H. This is the second year for this 4-H project in Alberta. Members that take part in this project raise their own calves at home, keep records, and deliver cattle to one of five harvest locations around the province about midMay. “It was really interesting,” said Sierra. “They went through all the ways they measured the carcasses, and what makes one carcass better than the others.”

The prizes for the win were pretty good too. “I got a big fancy belt buckle at the beautiful banquet, and a couple weeks later a cheque for $100 came in the mail.”

Sierra is already eyeing the calves in Grandpa’s pastures to scout out next year’s project. “My goal last year was to complete… this year I want to compete! That means I am going to get competitive,” enthusiastically predicts Sierra.

Cole’s Notes on BOLT…

opefully many have noticed that the new genetic evaluation using BOLT single step technology has been released. The evaluation combines pedigree, performance and DNA data from several major breed associations in both Canada and the US. This list includes Red Angus, Shorthorn, Gelbvieh, Limousin and most importantly for readers of this article Simmental in both the US and Canada.

The Process Data from the association is sent to the evaluation each Monday night. New EPD are returned each Friday and are checked and processed over the weekend and should be ready to view for Monday morning. This means that as you enter new data, or conduct 50K DNA tests, the information is incorporated into the EPD of all Simmental animals over the course of just a couple of weeks, as opposed to the previous semi-annual system. For example, previously if you missed getting your weaning weights into the association prior to the data cutoff that data would not be included in the animal’s EPD for another 6 months.

Now that data will go into the next week’s run and be incorporated into the EPD. A further advantage is that in the event of an error, such as a parentage change or a late-night data entry mistake, any corrections can also be fixed within a week or two, as opposed to the previous schedule.

Changes in EPD Breeders may notice some changes in specific animals.

These may be due to a couple of reasons. First and foremost, the BOLT evaluation produces a slightly different looking breed average for some traits compared to the old evaluation. This does not mean that animals moved within the population, just that their EPD may look slightly different. For example, average MCE in the old evaluation was 7.3 and now it is 4.0 for Canadian Simmental animals. If we have 2 bulls that remained unchanged relative to the population and were 7.3 and 8.3 before, now they would have MCE EPD of 4.0 and 5.0. The bulls still have the same difference in MCE, but look a little bit different in presentation. This will hold true for various traits in the evaluation.

Another reason for some of the changes in animal EPD is the inclusion of new data. This is no different than previous evaluations where an addition 8+ months of data has been added since the last evaluation published as Spring 2018. This may especially impact new parents such as first calf heifers and new herdsires that have had their first progeny reported in 2018.

Other changes that might be noted in the evaluation more specifically are the CE traits, Stayability and Carcass EPD. These are due to the above noted reasons, but also because the evaluation is now using re-estimated/updated genetic parameters in the evaluation models. In particular, this resulted in significant changes in carcass traits, since the Canadian association has very few carcass or ultrasound records to use in the evaluation.

The definition and expression of the EPD is the same as it has been previously.

A Note on Accuracy Some breeders may notice that accuracy levels may appear to be somewhat lower with the new evaluation, and will legitimately ask “if the new BOLT system is better then why are the accuracies lower?”

This difference is due entirely to the fact that accuracy is now “CALCULATED” where previously it was “ESTIMATED” and in fact the old methodology over-estimated accuracy. The new accuracy calculated and published from BOLT is actually a much better reflection of the risk and possible change that can occur in an individual’s EPD based on the information that is currently available.

DNA One of the biggest advancements of the new BOLT evaluation is the inclusion of DNA data directly into the EPD of the animal. This information is also used upstream and downstream in the pedigree to impact the prediction of genetic merit. Further, the DNA information is used to check pedigree accuracy where possible. This is also one of the

major reasons for EPD results to change with the new BOLT run. This is particularly true of lower accuracy animals without progeny, for which the DNA results in a larger impact on the EPD. Work done by IGS showed DNA testing as being equivalent to the following number of progeny records.

Docility Canadian Simmental breeders have been collecting data on docility scores of cattle at weaning for a relatively short period of time, however over that time they have amassed a data set of nearly 25,000 docility scores which are being sent to the new BOLT evaluation for use in comparing the genetics of docility. The New EPD (DOC) is an expression of the difference in probability of a sire’s calves scoring a 1 or 2 at weaning (very quiet/quiet) versus a 4 or 5 (excited/aggressive). A larger EPD value, indicates that offspring are more likely to be quiet and calm. There is significant research on this that shows better conception rates, improved eating quality and enhanced safety from animals with a calm disposition. The efforts of CSA members in collecting docility information on their cattle has resulted in this new tool that can help to ensure that Simmental cattle continue to exceed the needs of the industry going forward.

Consider docility scoring your calves this fall as you wean.

Docility Scores 1. Docile - Mild disposition, gentle and easily handled, stands and moves slowly during processing, undisturbed, settled, somewhat dull, does not pull on headgate when in chute, exits chute calmly 2.Restless - Quieter than average but slightly restless, may be stubborn during processing, may try to back out of chute, pulls back on headgate, some flicking of tail, exits chute promptly 3. Nervous - Typical temperament, manageable but nervous and impatient, a moderate amount of struggling, movement and tail flicking, repeated pushing and pulling on headgate, exits chute briskly 4. Flighty (wild) - Jumpy and out of control, quivers and struggles violently, may bellow and froth at mouth, continuous tail flicking, defecates and urinates during processing, frantically runs fenceline and may jump when penned individually, exhibits long flight distance (how close animal will allow you to come to them before moving away) and exits chute wildly 5. Early experiences have served Egan Brockhoff well

D

r. Egan Brockhoff had just returned from a farm visit with an Alberta hog producer concerned about a potential flu outbreak on that operation, when he took a few minutes to speak with Simmental Country about his several years of experience being involved with the Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA) more than 30 years ago.

It may seem like a bit of a stretch to explain how participating in and organizing beef shows and programs in his late teens and early twenties could benefit this world-travelled veterinarian who specializes in working with both large multinational, vertically integrated hog operations that millions of market hogs per year to smaller family run operations, but Brockhoff didn’t have to think too long.

“There were just so many aspects of experience and skills I learned during my years with the YCSA that transfer over to my work life today,” says Brockhoff, a partner with Prairie Swine Health Services, based in Red Deer, AB. Planning and organizing events, communications, learning to work with others, business and entrepreneurial skills are among some of the tools he still applies in a successful veterinary practice.

While much of his day-to-day work now involves consulting for hog producers and that sector within Canada and abroad with animal health, animal welfare, public health, food safety and food security, Brockhoff is still involved in the beef business. He remains on the third-generation central Alberta family farm in which he still raises and feeds commercial Simmental cattle. He is definitely still solidly connected to the beef industry.

Brockhoff has loved the beef business and the livestock industry from the get go. And being a kid with a passion for learning he absorbed it all. He was born and raised on the family farm at Edberg (about half way between Camrose and Stettler in central Alberta) where his grandfather at one time raised Hereford cattle. However his parents, Carl and Colleen Brockhoff, became interested in one of the new exotic European breeds, Simmental, in the 1970s.

The Simmental influence was introduced to the operation which grew into about a 1000 head commercial beef operation, along with about 100 head of purebred Simmental cattle. They also had a 2500 head feedlot on the farm along with a large annual cropping component as well.

Brockhoff credits the late Keith Thompson of Stettler, one of the pioneers in Simmental cattle in Canada, as being a big influence for introducing their farm to the Simmental breed. They began buying bulls from Thompson and a young Egan Brockhoff later became involved in 4-H. “I was probably nine-years-old when I started in 4-H,” he says. “And one of my first projects was raising and showing a Simmental-cross steer.” Thompson eventually convinced him to buy his first purebred animal and Brockhoff recalls he was about 12 years old when he bought his first purebred Simmental heifer at FarmFair in Edmonton. Over the years that purchase then grew into about 125 head of purebred cattle, which he kept until 2002 when he started studies at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) in Saskatoon.

During his teenaged years Brockhoff was all about beef and he was involved with 4-H right up until he graduated from high school. Egan was about 14 when he first connected with the YCSA program, which suited his interests. “I just loved raising and showing cattle,” says Brockhoff. “For several years that’s all I did all summer long, going from one show to the next.” Fortunately one of the premier show venues was in nearby Bashaw, which he describes as one time being the “Mecca” particularly for beef breed heifer shows. “Bashaw 17

was the central hub particularly for junior heifer events,” he says.

“Whether it be 4-H events or Angus events or Simmental, for all breed’s junior shows, Bashaw was the headquarters.”

When asked about some of the highlights of being involved with Simmental cattle, Brockhoff points to the first time he attended a Bashaw junior heifer event on his own. It still tops the list of memories not only because it was exciting, but also for building confidence. “Here I was an Alberta farm kid going to a premier livestock event on my own,” he recalls. “I had the truck and trailer on my own and cattle to look after. I camped on my own and met new people. I was doing that on my own and I just never forgot it.”

It was about this time that Barry Bennett, then general manager of the Canadian Simmental Association urged Brockhoff to join the Alberta YCSA program and sit on the provincial board.

He was about 16 when Bennett asked him to join the board of the national YCSA program and not long after he was named national and he also met his future wife, Dr. Melodie Chan. He learned how to plan, organize and execute programs and events. He remembers, for example, using those skills earlier in his career to develop a dairy education program that explained improved management skills to virtually all Hutterite colonies in the province. A similar program was developed for Hutterite hog operations, while another covered farm biosecurity measures in a program for the Alberta government and the livestock sector. And it all connects back to first learning how to plan, organize and deliver YCS programs across the country.

“You’re not aware of it at the time,” says Brockhoff.

“But all those experiences helped me develop a wide range of skills that I use every day.”

ver the last few years several herds have been affected with grass tetany in our area. These herds will often have multiples cases in short order. Once clinical signs occur and cattle go down chances of recovery are very poor, so treatment wise they are a true emergency. Early in the course of the disease treatment is very successful and your veterinarian will initiate steps to prevent further cases. This article will discuss clinical signs, treatment administered by your veterinarian and most importantly steps to prevent this often-fatal syndrome caused by a magnesium deficiency.

In a classic case of grass tetany, cattle (especially mature cows) become weak, staggery, go down and develop tetanic convulsive fits. Paddling with the front feet and snapping of the eyelids can also occur with heavy breathing and foaming at the mouth. When your veterinarian examines affected cattle they often find a very high heart rate and potentially elevated temperature from all the hard work the muscles are doing. Not much else is found and since the cow is down, veterinarians often administer a combination of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium much the same as one would treat a milk fever, as these three minerals together or in combination may be low enough to cause a downer cow. Most clinics are now set up to do in house blood work so many veterinarians will often grab a blood sample before they begin to check for the levels of these minerals. We often see magnesium and calcium low together. Occasionally we look for high potassium, another macromineral, as it can lead to a secondary grass tetany.

The real problem with grass tetany is it generally comes on very suddenly without warning and death can be very sudden.

Post mortems show very little other than hemorrhages on the heart and often leaves the veterinarians scratching their heads unless clinical signs are seen. Treatment initiated before they go down or just as they go down is often successful. If down for a time, treatment, although it may reverse some signs, cattle seldom get up. So as the producer, a suddenly down cow is really a veterinary emergency. The combination Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium products are often given by slow intravenous injection and more can be given subcutaneously or intraperitoneally. Your veterinarian when giving it intravenously will often listen to the heart so if problems occur administration can be quickly slowed down or stopped.

If one cow is magnesium deficient it is not uncommon for more cases to develop rapidly and one must assume the whole herd could be borderline deficient. In almost all cases I have seen mineral feeding has been sporadic to non-existent for the past year. Magnesium is what you call a macromineral along with

the likes of calcium and phosphorus. These deficiencies may be a long time coming. Stresses like weather changes, starvation for even 24 hours, heavy pregnancy or milk loss from sucking by well doing calves will lead to deficiencies. In a group of cows, the lactating ones are usually first affected. Changes to lush green pastures coupled with inclement weather can also precipitate an outbreak (lush grass lowers the magnesium level). I have seen a group of well doing heifers on a sound mineral program that were starved for 24 hours to facilitate spaying have an outbreak when the weather turned inclement. Not only do we want to treat clinical cases when they occur, we want to prevent further cases from developing by getting the much needed magnesium into them. Force feeding or drenching with magnesium oxide may prevent further cases, if along with this, we start supplementing with a good mineral program containing magnesium.

Good trace minerals will have macro minerals such as calcium, phosphorus and magnesium as well as many micro minerals such as copper and zinc. Some producers are mislead by terms such as trace-mineralized salt, which is primarily microminerals with mainly salt to enhance consumption. The issue is the macrominerals are totally absent in these combinations.

These products are much cheaper which is why they are purchased in the first place. When you purchase minerals, make sure and read the label. All three cause downer cows but most definitely, the most serious of these deficiencies in beef cattle is magnesium.

A lot of beef downer cows when the blood is analyzed it may be a combination of the three.

You can see your mineral program is absolutely key to preventing this sudden killer of cattle. Some areas have needed to increase the levels of the standard amounts of magnesium because of severe deficiencies but if we get too high palatability is a problem and cattle may back off mineral consumption and we don’t want that. Work with your veterinarian and nutritionist or feedmill to make sure you have adequate of the macrominerals in your program and always keep a close eye on cattle in times of stress. Not all cattle will eat adequate amounts of minerals even though we have it out for them. Also, the heavy milking ones are more susceptible.

This is a condition that is entirely preventable so by supplying good quality minerals you can prevent grass tetany as well as many other mineral deficiencies in your herd. Most other deficiencies come on slower but grass tetany is rather dramatic and it is the sort of drama we can use less of in our cattle herds.

Remember, if you have one case of a downer from any of the three macrominerals others in the herd may be close at hand.

“Amélioration génétique de l’industrie bovine”

e fait d’être un éleveur de bovins de race pure peut correspondre à différentes définitions pour différentes personnes et, par conséquent, personne n’investit pour les mêmes raisons dans le secteur de l’élevage de race. Certains vont joindre les rangs surtout pour exposer des bovins à leur exposition locale ou, encore, pour remporter une bannière de champion national. Ces gens qui investissent dans le secteur le font peut-être en raison du style de vie, ou peut-être qu’il s’agit d’un complément à leur troupeau commercial exploité depuis plusieurs années, avec l’idée d’accroître la valeur de leur ferme ou de leur ranch. Un programme dédié aux membres juniors existe pour la plupart des associations de race, telle que l’Association des jeunes éleveurs Simmental du Canada, et celle-ci constitue également une source de recrutement de nouveaux éleveurs de race voulant développer leurs propres troupeaux.

Peu importe la raison de leur présence dans ce secteur d’affaires, tous les éleveurs de bovins de race pure partagent l’objectif commun d’avoir choisi une race donnée de bovins de boucherie, contribuant ainsi à l’accroissement des revenus et des activités au sein de cette race. De même, peu importe la raison d’être intéressé par une race donnée, les éleveurs sont très importants afin d’assurer le futur de la race et de son association.

La durée de vie moyenne d’un éleveur de race pure est de sept ans, de telle sorte que si on veut maintenir le secteur, on doit toujours compter sur l’entrée de nouveaux éleveurs. Pour certains, la courbe d’apprentissage peut être plutôt raide, néanmoins tous les éleveurs de race pure en Amérique du nord partagent l’importante responsabilité de contribuer à la production et à l’amélioration génétique de leur race, au bénéfice de tous les troupeaux commerciaux. Cela nous conduit donc à la question de savoir quelle formation et quelles qualifications sont-elles nécessaires pour être un éleveur de race pure ?Puis, lorsqu’on a bienreconnu notre responsabilité, ne serait-il pas mieux de s’identifier comme producteurs de sujets souche ?

On doit obtenir une formation et une certification pour devenir un agronome, un électricien, un chauffeur de taxi, un médecin, un avocat, un plombier ou encore un comptable. Les soudeurs, les machinistes et les travailleurs de la construction doivent tous posséder une formation pour exercer leur profession, mais quelle formation avons-nous besoin pour effectuer l’amélioration génétique des bovins de boucherie ? Lorsqu’on se compare avec l’amélioration génétique en production avicole, porcine et laitière, il est juste de dire qu’en grande partie, on peut se compter chanceux que les abattoirs n’aient pas acquis plus de contrôle sur le secteur de l’élevage de race pure. De plus, on peut affirmer que nous avons survécu en dépit d’un manque d’orientation au cours de la dernière décennie de la part des associations de race, lesquelles ont pris du temps avant de mettre plus d’emphase envers les caractères d’importance économique en production bovine.

Bien que le contexte ait changé pour plusieurs races importantes de bovins de boucherie, et que plusieurs éleveurs fassent un remarquable travail en utilisant les outils disponibles pour effectuer leur sélection génétique, il y a encore d’autres individus qui croient pouvoir “analyser à l”oeil” leurs bovins tout comme le faisait leur grand-père, et sans porter aucune attention aux outils permettant de prédire la qualité des carcasses, la longévité, ainsi que d’autres caractères invisibles à l’œil. Les éleveurs de souche progressifs ont réalisé que leurs clients demandent de plus en plus d’informations avant de prendre une décision, et ils comprennent

bien qu’ils n’ont pas le loisir d’en connaître moins à propos de leurs bovins que les autres éleveurs vendant des animaux lors d’une vente le lendemain. C’est un secteur des affaires compétitif et la réussite d’unevente de taureaux n’arrive pas toute seule. Ce n’est plus assez de simplement les alimenter davantage et espérer les vendre comme votre grand-père le faisait.

A la fin d’août, j’ai eu la chance de participer à la fin de semaine du 50e anniversaire et du “Fall Focus” de l’Association Simmental des États-Unis (ASA) à Bozeman, au Montana. Conjointement avec la visite du nouveau bureau de l’association, et de la tenue des réunions du Conseil d’administration et des comités de l’ASA, une foule nombreuse a participé à un symposium regroupant des conférenciers-experts impliqués dans le domaine de l’amélioration génétique des bovins de boucherie. Chacun des conférenciers était un leader dans le secteur de l’amélioration génétique bovine, et tous avaient travaillé à l’amélioration des outils présentement rendus disponibles aux membres des diverses associations. Certains d’entre eux étaient eux-mêmes producteurs de bovins, alors ils n’avaient pas seulement de belles paroles, ils savaient comment passer à l’action.

Parmi toutes les présentations,j’ai été surtout impressionné non pas par les courbes en forme de cloche ou les formules de calculs, mais plutôt par le commentaire formulé par l’un des conférenciers, lequel a félicité tous les éleveurs présents d’être des leaders mondiaux de l’élevage de race pure, car ils étaient tous motivés par leur “formation continue à vie”.Ils étaient là parce qu’ils avaient un véritable intérêt dans le processus, et dans les changements en amélioration génétique, ainsi que pour tous les outils disponibles afin de faire progresser la qualité et la prévisibilité de leurs programmes d’élevage, au bénéfice de toute l’industrie bovine et de leur propres fermes / ranchs.

Alors que les associations de race telles que l’ASC sont responsables du développement de nouveaux programmes et de nouveaux outils destinés à leurs membres, ceux-ci ne sont pas très utiles si les membres n’en tirent pas profit, avec toutes les possibilités et la valeur qu’ils peuvent bien avoir. L’éducation par rapport à l’emploi de ces outils et aux changements apportés au programme d’amélioration génétique nécessite une communication de masse en continu, et cela semble parfois ne pas être suffisant. Bien que certains éleveurs pourraient avoir l’impression que c’est trop d’informations et, malgré tout le potinage qu’on observe parfois sur les médias sociaux, aucune association n’a jamais dit que la science remplaçait l’œil de l’éleveur et son gros bon sens quand il doit prendre des décisions de sélection ou de réforme. Lorsqu’on tient compte de son marché respectif et de son environnement, on a besoin d’avoir un équilibre.Et, avec l’industrie bovine actuelle fort compétitive, on a besoin de tous les outils.

lusieurs d’entre vous ont remarqué la publication récente des nouvelles évaluations génétiques calculées avec le système BOLT. Celles-ci sont effectuées pour la plupart des associations de races de boucherie du Canada et des États-Unis, à partir des données de performances, des généalogies et des données d’analyse de l’ADN. Les races concernées incluent Angus rouge, Shorthorn, Gelbvieh, Limousin et, bien entendu pour les lecteurs de cet article dans les revues Simmental des deux pays.

Les nouveaux ÉPD sont retournés à l’association chaque vendredi, ils sont ensuite vérifiés et corrigés durant la fin de semaine, puis ils devraient pouvoir être consultés le lundi suivant. Cela signifie donc qu’au fur et à mesure que vous transmettez de nouvelles données, ou que vous faites effectuer davantage d’analyses génomiques 50 K, ces données sont incorporées dans les EPD de tous les sujets de race Simmentalà l’intérieur d’environ deux semaines, au lieu de l’ancien système avec un calcul semi-annuel. Par exemple, dans le passé si vous manquiez la date limite de transmission de vos poids au sevrage, cela voulait dire que vos données n’étaient pas incluses dans les EPD de vos sujets avant un autre six mois. Ces données seront maintenant incluses aux calculs de la semaine suivante des nouveaux EPD. Dans l’hypothèse qu’on ait à faire un changement au niveau des parents, ou pour toutes autres corrections de dernière minute, celles-là peuvent maintenant se faire et être incorporées à l’intérieur d’une ou de deux semaines, contrairement à la cédule passée.

Changements au niveau des ÉPD Les éleveurs peuvent avoir remarquer certains changements pour des sujets spécifiques. Ceux-ci peuvent s’expliquer par deux raisons.Tout d’abord, comparativement à l’ancien système, l’évaluation BOLT génère des moyennes de race sensiblement différentes pour certains caractères. Cela ne veut pas dire que les animaux ont été reclassés dans la race, mais simplement que leurs ÉPD peuvent vous apparaître légèrement différents. Par exemple, dans l’ancienne évaluation, la moyenne pour la FMV était 7.3, alors qu’elle est maintenant 4.0 pour tous les animaux Simmental canadiens. Si on prend deux taureaux dont le classement n’a pas changé dans la race, et s’ils étaient à 7.3 et 8.3, ils devraient alors avoir un ÉPD de la FMV de 4.0 et 5.0. Les taureaux possèdent

encore la même différence au niveau de la FMV, toutefois la présentation des chiffres est légèrement différente. Cela sera tout aussi vrai pour plusieurs caractères évalués.

L’ajout de nouvelles données représente une autre raison expliquant les changements de valeur des ÉPD d’un animal. Cela n’est pas différent des évaluations précédentes pour lesquelles on a ajouté plus de huit mois de données, suite à la dernière évaluation publiée au printemps 2018. L’effet peut être spécialement important chez les nouveaux parents, tels que les femelles à leur premier veau et les nouveaux taureaux dont les données de progéniture ont été transmises en 2018.

D’autres changements plus spécifiques dans la nouvelle évaluation touchent les caractères de facilité de vêlage (FV), de longévité ainsi que les caractères liés à la carcasse. Ceux-ci sont également dus aux raisonsmentionnées précédemment, et ils sont aussi causés par le fait que l’évaluation utilise maintenant dans les modèles de calcul des paramètres génétiques mis à jour et réestimés. Les changements sont particulièrement importants au niveau des caractères liés à la carcasse, car il y a très peu de données sur les carcasses et de données de mesures par ultrasons dans l’évaluation réalisée pour l’association canadienne.La définition et l’expression de l’ÉPD sont les mêmes qu’antérieurement.

Remarque concernant la précision Certains éleveurs constateront que les niveaux de précision peuvent sembler être sensiblement inférieurs à l’ancienne évaluation, et ils pourraient avec raison vous demander “si le nouveau système BOLT est meilleur, pourquoi alors avons-nous des précisions plus faibles ?

La différence est entièrement due au fait que la précision est maintenant “CALCULÉE”, tandis qu’elle était précédemment “ESTIMÉE” et, en fait, la précision était surestimée avec l’ancienne méthodologie.

Présentement, la nouvelle valeur de précision calculée et publiée à partir du BOLT correspond à un bien meilleur reflet du risque et de la possibilité qu’un ÉPD donné change, selon les informations disponibles actuellement.

ADN L’inclusion des données d’analyse sur l’ADN directement à l’ÉPD d’un animal représente l’une des principales avancées obtenues avec le système BOLT. L’information est également utilisée en amont et en aval dans la généalogie, afin d’influencer la prédiction du mérite génétique. De plus, l’information sur l’ADN est employée lorsque cela est possible afin de valider la précision de la généalogie. Cet aspect constitue également l’une des

raisons majeures expliquant les changements d’ÉPD avec la nouvelle évaluation BOLT. Cela est particulièrement vrai chez les animaux n’ayant pas de descendants et avec une précision plus faible, pour lesquels les résultats des analyses d’ADN ont une plus grande influence sur les ÉPD. Des travaux effectués par IGSont démontré que les analyses d’ADN correspondent au nombre de données sur les descendants équivalents (tableau 1).

La docilité Depuis quelques temps, les éleveurs Simmental du Canada effectuent la collecte de scores de la docilité des bovins au sevrage, ce qui a permis de constituer une banque de données de près de 25 000 scores de docilité, lesquels sont présentement transférés vers l’évaluation BOLT afin d’obtenir une évaluation génétique de la docilité. Le nouvel ÉPD (DOC) exprime en fait la différence au niveau de la probabilité que les veaux d’un taureau obtiennent des scores de 1 ou 2 (très calme/ calme), versus un score de 4 ou 5 (excité/ agressif). Une valeur d’ÉPD plus élevée indique que les descendants devraient être plus calmes. Il y a un nombre significatif de recherches faites sur ce caractère, et les animaux plus calmes sont associés avec un meilleur taux de conception, une meilleure expérience à la dégustation de la viande et avec un meilleur niveau de sécurité. Les efforts consentis par les membres de l’ASC afin de recueillir

des informations sur la docilité de leurs bovins se sont concrétisés par la disponibilité de ce nouvel outil, lequel fera en sorte que dans le futur les bovins de race Simmental continueront d’excéder les besoins de l’industrie.

Cet automne, au moment du sevrage, considérez l’évaluation du score de docilité de vos veaux.

Scores de docilité 1. Docile–tempérament modéré, doux et facile à manipuler, se déplacent lentement durant les manutentions, non dérangé, stable, quelque peu amorphe, ne pousse pas sur la barrière de tête, sort calmement de la cage.

2. Agité–plus calme que la moyenne mais légèrement agité, peut être entêté lors des manutentions, peut tenter de reculer dans la cage, se retire de la barrière de tête, quelques coups de queue, sort rapidement de la cage.

3. Nerveux–tempérament caractéristique, gérable mais nerveux et impatient, bonne quantité de lutte, de mouvement et de coups de queue, mouvements répétés de poussée et de retrait de la barrière de tête, sort brusquement de la cage.

4. Tête en l’air (sauvage)–Sur les nerfs et hors de contrôle, tremble et lute violemment, peut beugler et avoir de la broue à la gueule, battement continu de la queue, défèque et urine durant les manutentions, court frénétiquement vers les clôtures et peut les sauter s’il est seul dans l’enclos, possède une zone éloignée de fuite (distance qu’un animal vous permettra d’avancer vers lui avant qu’il s’éloigne de vous)et sort de la cage extrêmement vite.

5. Agressif/Trèsagressif–semblable au score 4 mais avec un ajout de comportement agressif, craintif, agitation extrême, mouvement continu incluant des sauts et des beuglements dans la cage, sort frénétiquement de la cage et peut démontrer un comportement d’attaque s’il est manipulé seul.

Industry Delegation Promotes Canadian Beef Cattle In China

t the invitation of the China Agricultural University - Beef Cattle Research Center, several representatives of the Canadian beef cattle industry presented at the third China’s National Symposium on Applied Techniques and Industry Economics in Beef Production from July 27 - 29, 2018.

Representing the Canadian Beef Breeds Council in the symposium were Michael Latimer, Executive Director - Canadian Beef Breeds Council; Garner Deobald, Past President - Canadian Beef Breeds Council; Brian Good, Director of Field Service - Canadian Angus Association; Bruce Holmquist, General Manager - Canadian Simmental Association; Doug Mann, President Canadian Hereford Association; Stephen Scott, General Manager - Canadian Hereford Association; Mel Reekie, General Manager - Canadian Charolais Association; Anne Brunet-Burgess, General Manager- Canadian Cattle Identification Agency.

The delegates formally presented information on several aspects of Canadian beef cattle production and genetic improvement within the production chain to the approximately 450 symposium attendees. The topics included a general overview of the structure of the beef cattle industry, traceability of livestock in Canada, adapting breeds for regional environments and markets, data collection and use in genetic evaluations and breed association role in maintaining accurate pedigrees.

There were numerous other presenters from Canada as well as the United States, Ireland and China.

The second annual China-Canada Beef Industry Alliance meeting was held during the symposium and highlighted the activities that have taken place between Canada and China over the past year which included an outbound mission to attend Farmfair International in Edmonton in November 2017 as well as an inbound technical session with Canadian Angus CEO - Rob Smith and Travis Olson, Ole Farms in April 2018.

The delegates were invited to visit several farms in China including the China Agriculture University research farm in Beijing and the Kingbull Farm in Xi’An, China. The ability to visit the farms and hold technical discussions assisted in initiating a dialogue that provided a practical understanding of beef cattle production in China. It is evident that China is looking to modernize beef cattle production in order to provide for a population of 1.4 billion.

“Canada has enjoyed a long and successful history of exporting genetics and beef products to China,” said Latimer. “We currently have access for bovine semen and embryos, as well as a wide range of beef products, which we are hopeful will be expanded to include live cattle in the near future.”

The Canadian Beef Breeds Council (CBBC) represents the Canadian purebred cattle industry.

Its members include national breed associations that in turn represent producers of breeding stock. Associate CBBC members are exporters and service providers. The Canadian Beef Breeds Council exists to represent & promote Canadian pedigreed beef cattle genetics domestically and internationally. The Canadian Beef Breeds Council is the recognized representative of Canadian seed stock producers by government and industry, while effectively promoting Canada as the source of quality beef cattle genetics.

t is nice to see a good, long term program is a large task that requires continual attention and working. tweeking by everyone involved, past and present.

During my short couple months in this new role with the Canadian Simmental Association, I have had the privilege of witnessing several facets of the Young Canadian Simmental Association ( YCSA) program. The events at the 2018 National Classic held at Olds, Alberta along with the CSA Annual Meeting in August were highly successful and demonstrate the impressive long term results this program yields for the country’s young livestock enthusiasts.

The YCSA program has certainly been developed to this point. Not only have previous years’ activities and alumni proven this but the stage is set to continue with fantastic potential in the years ahead. The whole program through the years and the activities at the recent YCSA 2018 National Classic is a testament to the work of all involved.

Congratulations to all who took part, including YCSA Co-ordinator Kelsey Manske, the YCSA officers, the parents, volunteers and sponsors, the Simmental associations and many, many volunteers that make this happen. A special note of appreciation to all the devoted members of the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation group who for years have tirelessly gathered enormous funds from a whole bunch of extremely generous donors and auction buyers.

Young people from coast to coast can take part in the YCSA events like this that offers a wide range of activities – not only raising and showing cattle but also in the other character-building events like judging, oral reasons, print marketing, team grooming, quiz bowl, sales talk and more. In the early 70’s with their farming roots, they bought a parcel of land and moved to Metcalfe, ON. Harold built his pride and joy home with help from family, friends and neighbours. Initially raising and racing sled dogs for several years. Then Harold and Anne bought their first cow Betsy and established Meadowlock Farm. He along with Anne became long time members of the Ottawa Valley, Ontario and the Canadian Simmental Associations. Harold loved his farm life and the wildlife that came to visit. He would put out feed for the wild animals. He loved to see them eating especially the wild turkeys who would run to him when he rattled the feed pail. He loved to socialize, at the cattle shows and fairs, with his neighbours and he especially enjoyed morning coffee with the boys in Metcalfe. He had quite a sense of humour and enjoyed making people laugh. He was a great tease and Anne and the grand kids were his main target. He will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

What an honor it is to wear your nation’s flag on your sleeve. My trip to St. Paul, Minnesota, is one that I will remember forever. I met many amazing people and had many great opportunities, I was also able to share this great experience with Cassidy Pinkham and Brittany Barkley. This trip is actually my second time being sent to the States through the Young Canadian Simmental Association and it just reminds me of everything that this association has done for me, along with so many others.

It was a great opportunity to have been one of the representatives of Canada while competing in the American Junior Simmental Association’s National Show. While I was in Minnesota I was able to gain new knowledge and experiences throughout the competitions that I was a part of, as well I was exposed to some of the most elite Simmental cattle in America. It is exciting to know that our great breed is in the hands of capable youth across North America and that the Simmental breed has a bright future.

I would like to make a big thank you to the Young Canadian Simmental Association, the Canadian Simmental Association and The Friends of the Canadian Simmental Foundation for allowing me the opportunity to go on this amazing experience.

My name is Cassidy Pinkham from Metcalfe, Ontario. Last summer I competed at the National Classic in Fredericton, New Brunswick and this spring I was given the opportunity to travel to St. Paul, Minnesota the first week of July to attend the ‘Chillin’ Edition of the American Junior Simmental Association National Show. Coming along on this amazing journey with me was Mackenzie Skeels of Rimbey, Alberta. On July 2, we set off on the adventure of a lifetime. Once we all arrived in St. Paul we headed off to the first day of the show and began the activities. We participated in many educational activities throughout the show such as, public speaking, a genetic evaluation quiz, a cattleman’s quiz, sales talk and a six class judging competition.

I was fortunate enough to be placed in the top 20 intermediate exhibitors for sales talk. Throughout the show, we watched the Simbrah, percentage and purebred shows as well as showmanship. The evening following showmanship there was a banquet and awards ceremony with a prime rib dinner. Aside from the show, Mackenzie, our chaperone Brittany and I went to the Mall of America, the sculpture garden and a St. Paul Saints baseball game.

I would also like to thank our chaperone, Brittany Barkley for attending this trip with Mackenzie and I.
