Important Member Communication

Communication - the imparting or exchanging of information or news: “direct communication between two parties will produce greater understanding”

ne of the challenges that all Associations struggle with is communication to its membership; this applies to livestock organizations as well, including the Canadian Simmental Association. In today’s society everyone gets busy and gets pulled in different directions so it is often difficult to stay informed on what your Association is doing for you. In our effort to inform the CSA membership we use Simmental Country, member mail-outs, CSA website, e-News, e-blasts and social media such as Facebook and Twitter to communicate. In spite of all of these various avenues of communication CSA directors and staff still hear from members who say “I didn’t know that” or “why didn’t you guys tell us”. There is no doubt when it comes to communication there is always room for more. As we hear these comments though it is also very apparent that communication must be a two-way street with joint responsibility, of not only delivering the message but also looking for it and understanding what is being delivered. If the message is not understood then the member must ask questions until they understand. The other side of communication relates to when a member encounters an issue or a concern; when this happens the member needs to let CSA staff know so we can work to deal with it. If we all strive to communicate more effectively we are better able to work more efficiently on your behalf. Part of CSA’s current communications revolve around recent changes to the lab services for DNA and parentage testing that CSA offers to its members. Effective September 15th we have moved this process to Delta Laboratories in Edmonton, Alberta. This move is intended to provide a more seamless flow of our entire process from your farm or ranch to the lab and back to you. This move also provides opportunity for expanded testing options in a single 4

sample submission. There had been instances of lengthy turn-around times going back to last spring and this move is intended to improve that. As the CSA communicated in early September, the process remains the same for you as a breeder - when you require DNA testing or parentage done contact the CSA and we will walk you through it from there. Another important item to communicate to you is the CSA Genotyping Incentive program. This is a onetime offer that substantially reduces genotyping costs for THE members. The GGP HD test is reduced by $45 from the regular price of $90 to $45 and the GGP-LD test is reduced by $20 from the regular price of $45 to $25. In order to take advantage of this saving you must order your DNA kits from the CSA office by October 15th and samples must be submitted to the lab by November 15th, 2014. A second savings the CSA is offering to you is through an ultrasound rebate linked to genotyping. Any genotyped animal that has an ultrasound record submitted to the CSA office by April 30th 2015 will qualify for a $5 credit to the members account. To qualify the data must be collected under the same criteria as our previous Ultrasound Rebate program. An outline of these opportunities can be found at www.simmental.com. Fall is always a very busy time for all with weaning calves, hauling bales, working on sale or show cattle and getting the crop off. As the CSA continues to work to effectively communicate with our members we welcome and look forward to communication back from members. Please take the time to look for the CSA communications and don’t hesitate to contact the CSA with any questions, concerns or comments. De nos jours, chacun est occupé et doit effectuer plusieurs choses en même temps, ce qui souvent ne vous permet pas d’être bien informé au sujet des actions menées à votre bénéfice par votre association. Afin d’informer les membres de l’ASC, nous communiquons présentement avec eux via la revue Simmental Country, des envois postaux aux membres, notre site internet, des communiqués par courriel, de même qu’en ayant recours aux médias sociaux tels que Facebook et Twitter. Toutefois, malgré notre emploi de tous ces moyens de communication, il arrive que des administrateurs ou des membres du personnel de l’ASC se fassent dire “je n’étais pas au courant de ça” ou encore “pourquoi n’aviez vous pas pensé à nous le dire”. En matière de communication, il ne fait aucun doute qu’il est toujours possible d’en faire davantage. Nous prenons acte de vos commentaires, mais il nous apparait que la communication doive se faire dans les deux sens, c’està-dire qu’en plus de faire passer des messages, il est tout aussi important de les comprendre et de savoir où les trouver. Par exemple, lorsqu’un membre ne comprend pas une information donnée, il est de son devoir de poser des questions jusqu’à ce qu’il ait compris. Par ailleurs, il arrive parfois qu’un membre ait une préoccupation ou un questionnement par rapport à une communication donnée; le membre doit, lorsque cela se produit, en informer le personnel de l’ASC qui fera le suivi requis. En nous efforçant tous de communiquer plus efficacement, nous serons plus apte à travailler plus efficacement pour vous. Les communications actuelles de l’ASC concernent en bonne partie les changements survenus récemment au niveau des services en laboratoire d’analyse de l’ADN et de confirmation de la parenté, lesquels sont offerts à tous les membres de l’ASC. À compter du 15 septembre 2014, ces services ont été relocalisées aux Laboratoires Delta, d’Edmonton en Alberta. Ce changement vise principalement à favoriser un flot continu et des échanges facilités entre votre ferme ou votre ranch et le laboratoire, puis de nouveau vers vous. De plus, cela vous donnera accès à davantage d’options de testage, à partir d’un même échantillon transmis pour analyse. En fait, le printemps dernier, nous avons enregistré

des épisodes de délai allongé de traitement et cette nouvelle orientation vise donc à éliminer de telles situations. Au moment où nous communiquons avec vous au début de septembre, le processus demeure inchangé pour le membre – vous devez communiquer avec l’ASC lorsque vous avez besoin d’obtenir des analyses d’ADN ou de confirmation de la parenté, nous vous fournirons les consignes d’usage. De plus, nous profitons de cette opportunité pour vous informer au sujet du programme incitatif d’analyse génotypique de l’ASC. Voici donc une offre d’une durée limitée qui procure des coûts d’analyse génotypiques substantiellement réduits aux membres qui effectuent l’enregistrement du troupeau complet (ETC). Ainsi, le coût du test ‘GGP HD’ (haute densité) est réduit de $ 45, passant de $90 à $ 45, alors que le test ‘GGP LD’ (basse densité) est réduit de $20, passant de $ 45 à $ 25. Si vous voulez profiter des réductions offertes, vous devez commander vos trousses d’analyse ADN au bureau de l’ASC avant le 15 octobre 2014, et vos échantillons devront être transmis au laboratoire au plus tard le 15 novembre 2014. Toutefois, afin d’être reconnues et éligibles à ce rabais, les données mesurées doivent avoir été recueillies selon les mêmes exigences définies dans le programme incitatif sur les mesures aux ultrasons. L’automne est toujours une période très fébrile avec le sevrage des veaux, le foin à transporter près des bâtisses, les moissons et toutes les autres tâches touchant les ventes et les expositions. In the mid-80s the Churches became more interested in the Fleckvieh strain of Simmental which had less emphasize on size and more emphasis on milk production, beef qualities and overall solid performance. “Our breeding program was always about what made sense for the commercial beef producer,” says Frances. “And it is something that is still important to us today in our ranching operation here at Brooks.” With life changing in the early 1990s, Frances obtained a degree in interior design from Mount Royal College in Calgary in 1991, she moved to Brooks where she met a local veterinarian Doug Hargrave and eventually they married. Hargrave and Christie are happy with the breeding program they are following today. It is producing a nice mix or moderate size cow that is very efficient on pasture, and produces a calf that most times has a weaning weight of at least 50 per cent of its mother’s bodyweight. “You think back over the past 40 years and it is amazing the influence these European breeds have had on the North American beef industry,” says Hargrave. “Simmental is what has worked so well for us, but there is also Charolais, Maine-anjou and even Chianina and others — the whole industry was wild for these different breeds and initially it was all about size. And then we soon began to realize that being the biggest isn’t everything. “So we have seen with most, including Simmental were developing that moderate size animal is important. And they work so well in a cross breeding program. You need that Simmental influence for quick growth, and the crossbreeding for that hybrid vigor. Cross breeding with Red Angus for example helps maintain an efficient size, keeps the herd tidy, and has that production efficiency.” Over the years too, Hargrave considers herself honored to have served as a judge at some of the major Simmental shows. In 1985 she was a judge at the Canadian Western Agribition Percentage Female Show and Pen Shows, also at the Salmon Arm B.C. summer show, and in 1991 she was a judge at the Royal Winter Farm Fair in Toronto.

“I have won the CSPRA a number of times and also participated in the U.S. event as well,” says Hargrave. She won the world championship last year for 60-plus lady’s barrel racing. “The great thing about rodeo over the years is being able to compete, being able to travel to different places around the country, and to meet some great people along the way,” she says. She still competes in 15 to 20 rodeo events per year. And more recently she has got involved in a second rodeo event called ribbon running. It involves a two-person team. One man is a calf roper and the lady is on the ground as a runner. The runner positions herself to stand in the arena at a point where she estimates the roper will catch the calf. The calf has a piece of pink ribbon attached to its tail. Once the calf is caught and held by the roper, the runner runs up grabs the ribbon and then runs back to the finish line. Fastest time wins. “I am fortunate to work with a great roper Arnie Johnson,” says Hargrave. “He catches and just holds that calf, and I run up grab the ribbon and run back. It is just great fun…it’s just hilarious. You never know whether you are going to end up under the calf or on top of it.” She’s not planning to retire from rodeo or ranching anytime soon.

And for a little diversion from the beef business, Frances still caters to her rodeo addiction as much as time allows. In earlier years she was keenly involved in barrel racing and 17 times competed in the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton. “I tried hard but was never able to win the damn thing,” she says. “I was Canadian champion in 1972 which gives you some idea of how long I have been at this, but the event in 1972 was before it was part of the CFR.” When Doug Hargrave died in 2005 Frances dropped out of barrel racing for a couple years simply because there wasn’t time as she managed the ranching operation herself. In more recent years she and Bill Christie have both been involved in their respective events in the Canadian Seniors Pro Rodeo Association (CSPRA) and its U.S. counterpart the National Pro Rodeo Association. Frances is involved in barrel racing, while Bill competes in team roping.

here have been reams of information and accusations pointed towards the cattle industry regarding its contribution to development of microbes resistant to antibiotics used in humans, pets and some even in cattle. Are farmers, ranchers and feedlot operators doing their best to improve this situation? I believe the quick answer is yes, and will give some examples of how I think we lead the field, even if there is always room for improvement. There will no doubt be advancements, such as quicker detection of disease and non-antibiotic antimicrobials, in the future. Other futures improvements will be different and broader vaccination programs plus better ways to reduce stress, which leads ultimately to less disease and less reliance on antibiotics. A very broad spectrum vaccination program and weaning at home go along ways to decreasing antibiotic usage. The cattle industry stands almost alone in the number of new antimicrobials products developed, far more than in human medicine. The reason for this is that it takes many millions of dollars to develop, test and get approved a new antibiotic. It is costly to do all the safety, residue and efficacy work. In human medicine the economics and returns don’t encourage new products because treatments last only a few days and of course safety studies are all encompassing and extremely expensive. This is why a new major antibiotic hasn’t been developed since about 1987 in human medicine. With more antibiotics developed for cattle comes more choice. This allows producers to use, on the advice of their veterinarian, the product specifically suited to the infection at hand. This is wise and so is using only one antibiotic not several in combination. We have also found that if the product is going to work it will work quickly so there is rarely a need to carry on treatment regimens for weeks on end. This makes medical sense and also economic sense for the producer because antibiotics have a cost. Producers seldom treat too long or with too much product. Also, dosing is more accurate thanks to more accurate scales. The convenience of long acting products combined with the effort required to bring cattle for treatment, insure most cattle are not over treated. Over time, farmers have really bought in to “Beef Quality Assurance”. Producers are, almost without exception, giving the right amount in the right location for the right disease condition. To maintain this good record, here are a few suggestions: Always keep dose charts around (almost every • antibiotic has a different dose) 16

• have protocols written down to train new employees follow drug withdrawals • • when switching antibiotics switch to a different family of antibiotics The old days of “if some is good, more is better” are gone and we know that if the proper dose is given, in time it should work. If not, we need to re-examine the situation. Beef and dairy producers, with few exceptions, use products approved for their class of livestock. Chronic diseases are not over-treated and cattle are either shipped once drugs are withdrawn or humanely put down. Both these are positive steps to preventing resistance from developing. You likely have heard lots about the number of tons of drugs used in cattle production compared to human medicine. What you are not told is that most of these products are additives and ionophores put in feed and have nothing to do with antibiotics. As Dr. Tim McAlester with Agriculture Canada says, antibiotics don’t directly promote growth but reduce illness so cattle keep eating and hence gain weight. As for the amount used, it makes sense that treating a 2,000 pound bull or a 1,500 lb. cow will require more medication than a 200 lb. human. Keep these rebuttals in mind next time the allegation that “farmers are causing antibiotic resistance” is brought up. Vaccination is still the best biosecurity program for your farm. With vaccination programs, fewer calves get sick and those that do respond to treatment quicker and are less likely to relapse. Vaccination programs and better response that comes from using newer long acting products has also cut down on the use of feed additive antibiotics. Many feedlots are using less of the feed additive antibiotics designed to cut down liver abscesses or pneumonia. These antibiotics are also in a class of drugs that are seldom, if ever, used by medical doctors. Follow label directions. The labels of some antibiotics clearly state where the product should not to be used, such as fluoroquinolones (Baytril or A-180) in diarrhea cases. This is because the medical sector wants to save this family of drugs for use in human medicine and not get resistance to enteric (diarrhea) organisms. Likewise the cephalosporins are used only for treatment and not for any preventative or prophylaxis treatment in the face of an outbreak. These are some things we in veterinary medicine can be conscious of to help address the antimicrobial resistance problem. Let’s use antimicrobials as prescribed and encourage the development of more vaccines for prevention of disease.

Have you ever had your feed tested? As a nutritionist, feed testing is a fundamental tool that I rely on to assist beef producers with their feeding programs. This is true whether I am dealing with feedlots or cow-calf operations. Accurate knowledge of feed quality, particularly the operation’s forage base allows one to develop feeding strategies for specific production scenarios and minimize the over- or under-feeding of nutrients. By so doing, one is able to achieve desired production targets and save on supplemental feed costs. While feed testing seems like a “no brainer”, it is surprising how many cattlemen skip this critical management tool. It seems many would rather rely on visual appraisal (i.e. colour, plant species, and leaf content) or knowledge of cutting time to judge quality. While these are all indicators of forage quality, they do not substitute for a feed test particularly when it comes to the energy and protein content of that forage. For example, the protein content of brome hay can range from as low as 5 to 6% up to 18% depending on stage of maturity at cutting. While visual appraisal may help separate the good from the poor quality hay, it is not going to help you decide how much protein supplement, if any, you need to background calves when feeding this hay. Only a feed test can accurately help you make this decision. With respect to energy content, a feed test will give you values as total digestible nutrients (% dry matter) or as digestible energy (Mcal/kg dry matter) and depending on the laboratory used for testing, you may also get net energy values for maintenance and gain (Mcal/kg dry matter). These energy values can be used to determine the amount of forage allotted in bale or swath grazing situations or can help you determine how much grain you need to supplement when backgrounding calves. The feeding value of a given forage is often based on its fibre content. A feed test can generate two fibre values that reflect either its relative energy content or feeding value. These include acid (ADF) and neutral detergent (NDF) fibre. High ADF values indicate that the hay was cut at a late stage of maturity and as a result it will be poorly digested by the cow. This late cut hay will be lower in energy content than the same hay cut at an earlier stage of maturity with a lower ADF value. High NDF levels also indicate a more mature forage at harvest and more importantly is indicative of the degree to which cattle will consume the feed – high NDF values limit forage intake! Again, visual appraisal will not help you accurately identify the energy content nor the feeding value of your hay. As indicated above, accurate knowledge of the energy and protein content of your feed can allow you to target economic feeding strategies for various classes of cattle. For example, when feeding the pregnant beef cow, a basic principle is to adjust your feeding program to match her requirements as she moves through the second and third trimesters of pregnancy with the appropriate quality and quantity of feed and to do so in a cost effective manner. Pregnancy requirements, particularly for nutrients such as energy and protein, increase dramatically in the last 6 to 8 weeks prior to calving. This concept is illustrated in Table 1 for both a mature cow as well as for a bred heifer. Note that for the mature cow, energy requirements at the end of the third trimester are 20% higher than 2nd trimester requirements. This is true whether you use total digestible nutrients (TDN) or net energy for maintenance as an energy reference. The increase is even higher for the bred heifer, as she not only needs to meet requirements for pregnancy but also has to continue to grow to mature weight. With respect to nutrients such as protein, calcium and phosphorus, similar increases are evident for both animals as pregnancy advances. Meeting these increased nutritional needs by feeding a

balanced ration is critical to maintaining a normal pregnancy and to prevent weight loss. It will also influence the success of your subsequent breeding program. Inadequate nutrition will cause cows to lose weight and body condition. This is true regardless if the issue is feed quality or quantity. Cows that lose weight during the last trimester or from the period from calving through breeding are subject to calving difficulties, extended periods of anestrous and/or poor first service conception rates. The result will be an extended breeding season and/or an increase in the number of open cows. As well, next year’s calf crop can be affected not only due to lower numbers but also as a result of reduced weaning weights due to the fact that more calves are likely to be born late in the calving season. Having your forage tested is the first step to ensuring that you are meeting the requirements of your cows for maintenance and pregnancy. Today’s feed test laboratories use both wet chemistry and near infrared spectrometry to offer accurate results and rapid turnaround times. A basic forage analysis will provide you with moisture , energy (i.e. total digestible nutrients, digestible energy and/or net energy content) and crude protein values as well as a mineral package (calcium and phosphorus). More advanced packages can provide you with details on all macro and trace minerals, acid and neutral detergent fibre content, nature of protein (soluble, degradable, bypass, heat damaged), fat content, nitrate and other potential toxins. This information can be used by you and your nutritionist to develop feeding programs that meet the requirements of pregnant, wintering beef cows and replacement heifers, as well as for targeting gains of growing cattle! At $25 to $30 a sample for a basic feed test, it truly is a no brainer! So again I ask the question – Have you tested your feed this winter? Table 1. From the Director’s Chair World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation Congress 2014 July 18-23 - Bogota & Cartagena, Columbia

common expression is that “life is all about experiences” and this year I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Colombia for the World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation Congress. This was truly a wonderful experience to learn and promote Canadian Simmental cattle in different parts of the world. The biggest thing that stood out for me on this trade mission was that whether we call ourselves farmers, cattle producers or ranchers, it does not matter what corner of the world we live in, we all have a passion for our breed! By attending events such as this, we will continue to educate the world about the positive attributes and potential that Canadian Simmental has to offer. In the early morning of July 18th my husband Jacob and I joined Canadian Simmental Association General Manager Bruce Holmquist and fellow Simmental breeder Tim Ishee from the USA, in the Houston airport, waiting for the “red-eye” flight to Bogota. We were all tired as we all had experienced a day of delays, but were staying positive that we would make the opening presentations shortly after arrival. The World Simmental – Simbrah congress opening presentation started at 8:30 a.m. with each delegation making a presentation about Simmental in their country. This was a great experience to learn and listen to the statistics and purpose of Simmental around the world. For the rest of the day we enjoyed the Expo Corferias fair that showed the artisanal cultures of different regions of Colombia. We were able to see cattle, watch dual purpose Simmental classes and enjoy the culture. We had the opportunity to tour barns and view/watch Brahman cattle that were also part of their National show. That evening we went to the Andres Carne de Res restaurant. Andres is located in Chia, a typical town near Bogotá. This restaurant is one of the most famous places for visitors as it seats close to 2000 people and was quite an experience with VERY good food.

Saturday morning began with a historical church tour on Monserrate hill. This was one of the main worshiping churches in the city and located 3152 meters above sea level. For an east coast Canadian, who lives at an average elevation of 30 meters above sea level, you listen when they disclose all the precautions of being at that high of an altitude! It was at this tour where we met fellow Canadians Jackie & Raymond Cormier, Americans Fred Schuetze, Will Townsend, Heinz & Elenore Daub, Bill Wentz and Bill & Jane Travis; and our Australian friends Pete & Vanessa Wenn. We later toured beautiful, historical Bogota including a visit to the large 5 story Gold Museum and then ended the day by enjoying the XXVII Simmental – Simbrah show and dinner. Watching the cattle show was very educational. The Colombians are very passionate about their breed and truly enjoy showing them off. The type of Simmentals is different from what we see today in our country, but that passion I speak about is the same. The cattle carry different strengths than what we look for in Canada as in Colombia they work mainly with dual purpose animals (milk and beef) that consist of straight Fleckvieh/Simmental or Simbrah. Sunday began with an interesting tour of the Salt Cathedral in Zipaquira, a religious monument built by miners about 50 years ago and located just outside Bogotá. This cathedral was incredible and the craftsmanship and detail was truly something to see. Sunday afternoon we toured a milking Simmental farm just outside Bogota at Caiadero Santa Ines. The single 6 parlor pit had a similar design to what we would see in a Canadian dairy barn with one large difference in that the structure only had a roof and one solid wall. Milking your herd and watching the traffic go by on the highway is common at this particular farm. When I spoke to the owners about production they said an average Simmental will milk a maximum of 35 kg per day, with a high 3.25-3.5% of butterfat while the average Holstein in the country would produce 45-50kg per day and 3% or lower for butter fat. With that production difference some may ask, why milk Simmental? The reason in the Colombian 29

production system is that the calf always has a higher value, bull or heifer and butter fat also increases profit, and a Simmental can endure the climate better than a Holstein can offering reproduction efficiencies. Upon hearing that the question that ran through my mind is why are Canadians not using more Fleckvieh/Simmentals for milk production? Although some are this is an opportunity for us to truly explore. On Monday we viewed other local farms near Bogota that specialized in Simmental genetics and milk production. We again met and talked with producers who are very detailed and understand their herds and the strengths and weaknesses of them. Later that day we were heading north to Cartagena for the last leg and meeting portion of this congress. One of the highlights of the northern Colombian stop was at Caiadero Santa Ines, a beef operation where normally 1500 hundred beef animals, Simmental/Braham or Simmental/Gyr cross, would be grazed. Due to the drought the carrying capacity

was reduced only 900 animals with the excess animals moved to another location that had received more rainfall. The World Congress conference was at the Convention Centre of Las Americas. The meetings offered educational and global insight about the Fleckvieh/ Simmental & Simbrah breeds and ideas and views of where the breed would grow to next. It was very interesting listening to the different presentations from President Josef Kucera from Czech Republic, 1st VP Johan Kluyts from South America, 2nd VP Fred Schuetze, USA along with several other presenters. Overall it was a fabulous opportunity to meet people from all over the world and to promote how Canadian Simmental can fit into the needs of many of the WSFF member countries including Colombia.
