Bull Sale Season!

ull sale season is again upon us and with it a tremendous number of bull sale catalogues of all breeds are arriving at households across the country. The catalogues come in every shape, size and format; from coil bound, color productions with professionally taken pictures to basic flyers with no pictures and far less gloss. There will also be varying amounts of information provided, however all will have the basics of pedigree, performance data, polled/horned status, usually EPDs and perhaps ultrasound data. There may also be dam production information and footnotes that will add to the background and potential of the particular bull. The information supplied is a result of many hours of data collection, recording and reporting that successful seed-stock producers recognize as being essential to measuring and assessing benchmarks to make true genetic improvement in both their programs as well as their customers’ herds. The science and information in the seed-stock sector of the beef industry has progressed considerably over the past decade when bulls were largely selected based on appearance and minimal performance data. Another major change we have seen is how breeders approach the marketing of their bulls. Many breeders who were once mainstays at major bull sales such as Regina, Calgary, Lloydminster and Battleford have moved from selling a handful of bulls in one, or in some cases several different bull sales, to having sales on their own or with several other breeders. Some of these sales are now selling 100-150 or more Simmental bulls in an afternoon with the same happening down the road the next day and the day following and the day after that. The amount of Simmental bulls being sold this spring is much larger than 20 years ago with much more professionalism and focus being placed on marketing not only the bulls themselves but the entire breeding program. There has also been an increased

8

emphasis on the customer service many breeders are providing with sight-unseen programs, insurance options as well as deferred payment in some instances. Many Simmental breeders have taken these necessary steps to increase market share among commercial buyers not only for themselves but also for the Simmental breed as a whole. What makes this even more impressive is that this has happened during a period of time when the North American domestic cowherd has steadily decreased in size to where we now have the lowest number of beef cows since 1957. While the cowherd has drastically downsized Simmental has slowly increased its bull market, becoming a dominant player in beef production within North America. The question we need to ask ourselves however is what is going to sustain this growth of the Simmental breed? A sound, predictable and affordable product that delivers quantifiable profit in the form that our commercial customers want is crucial to Simmental’s sustained growth. Color, type, maternal or terminal, polled or horned; we need to keep a certain amount of diversity and options within our genetic offering to the beef industry however we also need to have a product that consistently delivers what we claim it will and guarantee it. Phenotypic data collection must continue to be a priority. This combined with genotyping and parental integrity and validation has never been more important to maintain in order to meet the ever-increasing expectations placed upon us. Never before has there been as much expected of us as seed-stock producers. This provides considerable potential for further growth as breeders and for the breed as long as we continue to strive to understand as well as to meet the expectations of our customers. Based on the current optimism in the beef industry the 2015 bull sale season is likely to be another good one for Simmental whether you are buying or selling. Good luck to all of you and safe travels.

ICAR/Interbeef Genomic Workshop

D

Dr.John Crowley, University of Alberta

ublin, Ireland played host to 18 countries representing 24 breeds at the ICAR/Interbeef Genomics Workshop in November 2014. The Interbeef working group was set up under the International Committee for Animal Recording (ICAR) to attend to international genetic evaluation and its associated needs. Participants were mainly from the scientific community, with one afternoon session attended by industry (mainly Irish). Illumina hosted a fourth day, and took the opportunity to tell participants about nextgeneration genotyping and sequencing methods/ideas and how the company foresees that technology being used in the animal breeding sector. The main portion of the workshop was split into presentations, Q&As to a panel of experts and a break-out discussion group. Topics covered in the presentations included the challenges and opportunities of genomic application in breeding programs as told from the dairy side; the application of beef genomics in Australia, France, Sweden, Ireland and the US. See below for a link to most of the presentations. The expert panel was made up of Dorian Garrick (Iowa State), Roel Verkamp (Wageningen UR) and Esa Mantysaari (MTT, Finland). Questions asked in this session and in the breakouts (where participants were split into groups to discuss two questions each) sought answers to the future of genomics in beef and indeed the future direction of Interbeef. On the topic of delivering genomic evaluations at a local or national level, areas in need of improvement or focus included central coordination at a local level, developing a suitable “discovery population” (a well genotyped and phenotyped group that is well related to the rest of the population), funding for implementation and service to producers. The pros and cons of international collaboration were also raised. The pros won based on the gravitas of the reasons listed, which included the ability to increase discovery population size, ability to build critical mass and share knowledge (personnel, software, reduced genotyping cost) and the sharing of rare phenotypes. The cons list included slower implementation, stifled recognition in some locales and the unequal distribution of benefits (smaller populations have more to gain), all of which pale in comparison to the pros. The future role of Interbeef was the premise of the question, “What are the steps to make genomic selection happen, organizationally and technically?” Seven major areas were identified: facilitate a listing of all genotyped animals, •

22

• hold a repository of genotypes, • provide an imputation service, • provide a service where international breeding values and genomic breeding values are produced, • facilitate data sharing, • provide quality control and accreditation for genomic evaluations and evaluation providers, and • provide guidelines for genomic evaluations and host a forum to answer technical queries. Interbeef could also play an increased lobbying role regarding the importance of collaboration in the context of international genetic/genomic evaluations (especially relevant for funding bodies and for changes in legislations affecting members) and continue to organize networking events to facilitate greater collaboration in the areas of data, genotypes, software and knowledge. Everybody wanted a turn at the microphone to voice their opinion on the consequences of implementing or not implementing genomics in beef breeding programs. Of the numerous points made, an important one was that genetic gains through genomics are happening very quickly, so we need to make sure we are going in the right direction. That increased rate of genetic gain in a terminal trait will have rougher consequences than usual in a maternal trait if breeding goals are not balanced and selection criterion not properly identified and/or defined. The fear of commercial companies running their own genomic evaluations and genotypes (and thus selection decisions) and these not entering the national genetic evaluations was also noted. With the advent of genomic selection, there is also increased competition on AI sires from natural sires (in the absence of genomic mate allocation) as young bulls are now available that are as reliable as older bulls that have a lot of progeny (e.g., an AI bull). The consequences of not implementing genomic selection are 50 percent slower genetic gain and poor gain in those low heritability traits. All in all, this was a very worthwhile and enjoyable gathering. The musings and discussions on present and relevant works kept the crowd talking and busy throughout the week. It was valuable to Canada also, as it gave me personally an opportunity to touch base with a few key people who are facilitating the adoption of genomic evaluation here and to keep that ball rolling. View a summary of the discussions at http://www.icar.org/

Atelier sur la génomique de l’ICAR

D

Dr.John Crowley, University of Alberta

Women in Simmental Country

GeorgetteMcMillenshowstherearemanyimportantroles on a ranch

G

eorgette McMillen’s first thought is that she “really hasn’t done that much” over the years when it comes to the family purebred ranching operation near Carievale in southeast Saskatchewan. “There isn’t much of a story here,” she said at the outset of a Simmental Country interview. Yes, she has been an equal partner in McMillen Ranching Ltd. with husband Jim for the past 47 years. As Jim was busy with cattle and fieldwork, Georgette took the lead in raising their four children, got everyone to hockey practice, games Jim and Georgette McMillen and school activities, and then there was the household to run. After the kids were in bed, she and Jim both spent many a night doing paper work and registrations for a large and growing purebred Simmental operation. It was all “paper” work for many years, until she learned to move records into one of the first computerized purebred software programs starting in 2000; that launched the era of more computerized recording keeping. Georgette looked after the farm’s books, “paid the bills”, maintained the herd registry, and helped to co-coordinate photography, advertising and promotion for the annual sale catalogues. For 21 years she has been busy for the days in and around the actual sale day— the past 12 of those years with the sale held on the ranch each March — making sure everything runs smoothly. For many McMillen Garden years she clerked the sale, although that was later handled by Jim’s sister Agnes Smith, and now is handled by daughter-in-law Erin. Although the main sale day lunch for a couple hundred buyers and guests is catered, there is always some baking to be done to go with the coffee. Forget the bulls — reportedly some people come just for the selection of Georgette’s baking including butter and cherry tarts. In the weeks after the sale, she and Jim are often on the road with truck and trailer travelling thousands of miles to deliver bulls to various buyers across Western Canada and into the U.S. The McMillen’s sons do more of the trucking now, however Jim and Georgette still like to get out and visit customers. There were the daily morning coffee meetings she prepared for at the house as everyone gathered to discuss their plans and projects for the day. For many years she also had lunch on the table for hired men and evening meal to prepare. The McMillen’s at one time showed cattle at various livestock shows across Western Canada, and Georgette helped with that. Being fluent in French always helped with any show visitors from Quebec. Yes she did drive a silage truck a few times.

42

While Georgette says she is slowing down from doing all this “not much” stuff there is story about a recent new car that some how accumulated about 40,000 kilometers of travel in a year, a rough estimate puts at least half of that travel as related to farm business. “Well I really haven’t done that much, other than maybe be a “go for” for about 40 years,” says Georgette, with humility and a smile. “Yes, I’ve been involved, but really I just listen a lot.”

AN UNDERSTATEMENT That description is somewhat understated says Jim, who describes Georgette as the proverbial glue that holds the whole operation together, and keeps their day-to-day ranching lives running smoothly. Georgette McMillen has lived her entire life in southeast Saskatchewan. The second youngest of seven children, she was born on the family farm near the French-speaking hamlet of Bellegarde. McMillen Turkeys She was seven when the family left the farm and moved to the nearby community of Storthoaks. Eventually she met a young rancher, Jim McMillen, and they were married in 1967, setting up household as third-generation ranchers on the McMillen farm north of Carievale. While the ranch had always been in the commercial Hereford and Black Angus cattle business, Jim took an interest in this new-to-Canada Simmental breed in the late ‘60s. “The neighbor had bred a few of his cows to Simmental and I was very impressed with the calves,” says Jim. “They were awesome. “ The McMillen’s bred a few of their British breed cows through A.I. to Parisien genetics in 1969 — and as they say, they have never looked back. That breeding produced half-blood Simmental/Hereford calves “and we just kept going” says Jim. “Hereford and Angus are excellent cattle, but cross-breeding with the exotics brought some size into the operation.” The Herefords and Simmental had a particularly good color fit, so breeding focused on that. In the following years they bought a few cattle “here and there”, kept breeding through A.I. to Simmental genetics, producing more half bloods and eventually three-quarter blood and higher percentage cattle. In the mid ‘70s the McMillen’s imported three full blood, Pie Rouge Simmental yearling heifers from France. Their program just kept going, breeding their percentage cattle to Simmental genetics, until more of the herd reached purebred status.

ON THE RANCH

With two of their sons involved fulltime with the ranching operation, and regular assistance from other family members, Georgette and Jim McMillen, after more than 45 years in the purebred cattle business are slowing down, but at the same time always find lots to do. “I never was too involved in the production end of the ranch,” says Georgette. “But I was always there and helped out Yearling Bulls where I could. There was always

plenty to do looking after the children, the household, and for many years looking after the paperwork. I have read articles about other ranch women who are so involved with the cattle side of the business and I thought “I never did anything like that” but I guess my role was just different.” Today McMillen Ranching Ltd. runs about 700 head of purebred mostly red and black Simmental cows, on a 9,000 acre farm. The land mostly produces forages for pasture and hay, although they seed some grain as well. Their sons Lee and David are full time on the ranch, while another son Ed, has an off farm career in the oil patch but still comes by the farm nearly every day. Their daughter Carolyn and her husband Trent Wall and family ranch not too far away at Alameda. Georgette and Jim joke that the Walls are always welcome at the home ranch despite the fact their daughter and son-in-law are Charolais breeders. On the ranching side of life, the McMillen’s are moving into a two-herd management system. For many years all cows and heifers were bred to calve in January and February, producing early calves that then could be marketed as yearling bulls the following year. “But now we are also starting to calve part of the herd in April/May,” says Jim. “Trying to calve 600 to 700 head in early winter is just too much. Last year in January and February I don’t think there was one day when it was above -25C and when it’s that cold someone has to be out there all the time.” They calved a few heifers in April/May of 2014 and it worked extremely well having animals calve out on pasture. This year they’ve scheduled breeding so about 525 head are calving in early winter and 200 head will be calving starting in April. While it is easier management, the downside is the later calves are too young to make yearling bulls by the following spring, so they have to be kept an extra year and sold as two-year olds. The April/May 2014 bull calves, for example, will be marketed as twoyear olds come the spring of 2016. “It is an extra cost to carry these bulls over another year, but at the same time we are also seeing more customers looking for two-year-old bulls, ” says Jim. “So the marketing is working out too.” The production side of the ranch is geared to producing Yearling Bulls marketable bulls for the annual sale day held the first Saturday of March for the past 21 years. For the last 12 years the sale has been on the ranch. As the McMillen’s were building their Simmental herd back in the late ‘70s and ‘80s they belonged to the Border 9 Association which was a group of Manitoba and Saskatchewan producers working together and holding an annual bull sale. The McMillen’s were later involved with the Prelude to Spring sale which involved four local Simmental breeders with an annual sale day at Alameda. As their ranching operation grew, eventually they launched their own sale. While the McMillen’s have always appreciated the qualities of the Simmental breed they weren’t involved with the extremes. “I think in many respects we aimed for middle of the road cattle,” says Georgette. “We just wanted good quality cattle.” “Some parts of the breed really got into the extremes of big, tall cattle for a while,” adds Jim. “And that wasn’t what we wanted. I have to give credit to the Simmental industry for adjusting

its breeding program, bringing the breed down to earth, to produce a more moderate sized animal. They are not too big, but at the same time you don’t want them too small either.” The McMillen’s first high selling animal was a bull they named Big John that sold at one of the Prelude to Spring sales in early 1980s for about $15,000. “And that was pretty good money in those days,” says Georgette. “In the early days of imported cattle people were selling half bloods for $30,000 and $40,000 each, and we never got into that market. Our focus was to build our own herd so we kept every animal we could.” The McMillens were proud to win the Simmental People’s Choice award at Canadian Western Agribition in Regina several years in a row. They were also presented with the Purebred Breeder of the Year Award. “We have been so fortunate to have met so Bred Heifers in the Fall many wonderful, friendly and enthusiastic people in this industry,” says Georgette.

FAMILY CLOSE BY Georgette appreciates having a large family network

living on or nearby the ranch— it helps to maintain a strong family bond and also helps with the transition of responsibilities with the ranching operation. Lee and his wife Erin live on the ranch with their children Lance and Lainee. Erin is an administrator with the rural municipality however she also handles more of the paper and computer work for the ranch. David and his wife Chris also live on the ranch with their four children, Shandi, Kaley, Kade and Turner. Chris for the last few years is looking after most of the paper work and registration process for the herd. Ed and his wife Marjie live nearby with their children Kierra, Blake and Jake. They own land and run a few cattle. Ed works full time in the oil patch but visits the home ranch most days and helps out as much as he can, while Marjie has an off-farm job in nearby Carnduff. And daughter Carolyn and husband Trent Walls operate Open View Charolais at Alameda with their family Shaelyn and McKenna. While still involved in the daily ranching operations, Georgette and Jim McMillen are easing toward some measure of retirement. “I have always taken pride in my vegetable and flower garden,” says Georgette. “And some day soon I’d like to take a photography course, I love to take scenery pictures. “It has been a long career in this industry and many of the old timers have retired,” she adds. “But we’re still going after 45 years. The family is taking over the management aspects of the ranch, which is good, but Jim and I still enjoy it, we still enjoy good health, so we plan to keep going for a while yet.”

umerous articles have been written about calf scours. I have always said if you only had one thing to treat scours with, veterinarians would always choose electrolytes, as it is the dehydration and/or acidosis, which kills calves first. This article will focus more on the electrolytes (the types and amounts) that should be given in order to save more calves. First, before we go to specific treatments, the greatest number of clinical cases is prevented by good nutrition to the cows to yield better colostrum and vigorous calves, scour vaccination, maintaining a clean calving area with lots of room and having no more than 50 cow-calf pairs per pen if possible. Those are probably the three key areas in prevention of that first scours case. Once you have clinical cases it is ideal to have an isolation area where the pairs can be segregated to prevent further spread to other calves. In treating with electrolytes as producers it is important to recognize the severity of the scours by either how dehydrated or how acidotic (depressed) the calf is. If the skin tents when you twist some in the neck area and is slow to slip back the calf is dehydrated. The most accurate method though is if the eyeballs are recessed into the head. We often have to roll the eyelids back a bit to visualize this recession. If the eyeballs are obviously recessed with doing this the calf is severely dehydrated (810%). A calf that gets to 12% dehydrated is near death. Acidotic calves will generally have varying degrees of depression and may or may not be very dehydrated. If walking, often have a drunken stupor and with advanced acidosis will go down and can’t get up. If they are laying flat on their side they are severely acidotic. Acidosis is a complicated process but suffice it to say the calf ends up with too much acid in their bloodstream and what you see is the end result. Both the true scours (diarrhea), and acidosis if severe require veterinary intervention and intravenous fluids. If acted on quick enough oral electrolytes will return many calves to normal function. When in doubt give electrolytes. They are not that costly, easy to administer and the responses can be dramatic. There are many different electrolytes on the market some of which are inferior. They need sufficient sodium (Na) because with diarrhea lots of sodium is lost. Also they need to have glucose as an energy source and other products such as acetate or bicarbonate, which keep the PH in the gut normal. There are many different electrolyte sources out there and some veterinarians in the U.S.A have evaluated many of them, as the selection is even greater down south. Surprisingly many products were very poor based on what we know a calf needs and how to replace the electrolytes lost in the diarrhea. Talk to your veterinarian as they have access to the best ones on the market. At a recent presentation a veterinarian state the best product was one only available in Canada and he wished it were available in the US. The product that received rave reviews was Calflyte & Calflyte II. Do not get into the trap of using home remedies for electrolytes they can lead to electrolyte imbalances, salt poisoning etc. The ready made electrolytes come packaged well and in sizes (packets, buckets or pails) which are sufficient size with multiple feedings to be quite economical. They have measuring devices so follow directions, they can also be

resealed, as it is very important to keep them dry and not contaminated in-between uses or in-between calving seasons. Electrolytes do have an expiry date on them so watch that as well. Follow the instructions on amount of water to add, use luke warm water and either have the calf suck or if they are too weak use the tube feeder. One to two liters per treatment is the recommended amount and up to four times daily. If a calf is about ten percent dehydrated it needs approximately ten pounds of water or four litres just to bring it to normal let alone the extra amount of fluid it needs for maintenance in a day. We used to say pull the calf from the cow for one day to rest the gut. The value of this is not substantiated so the more common procedure is to try and leave the calf on the cow or pull it off for short periods and give the electrolytes at the in-between feedings. You never want to mix electrolytes and milk together as this interferes with the clotting mechanism of the milk. Even in veterinary clinics where calves are put on intravenous fluids they don’t commonly feed milk for twelve hours. After that without milk supplementation calves start loosing weight. The fat and energy in the milk is what allows them to put on weight. It is no wonder calves have great difficulty recovering if kept off mother’s milk for too long. In-between feedings of electrolytes or between sick calves make sure and disinfect the feeding tube or nipple and bag or bottle. Use a safe disinfectant such as virkon as the last thing you want to do is spread disease from calf to calf. Remember the disinfectant must contact the surface for at least ten minutes, so clean the drencher rinse and let soak in the disinfectant. If doing multiple calves I would suggest keeping an extra tube or nipple soaking all the time. Have a different tube feeder for non-scouring calves. Use boot dips and change and wash coveralls often, as they are often the source of spread within a farm. Go from the calving cows with clean coveralls to the sick calves and not the other way around. There are several things we can avoid in order to improve our success rate. Try not to leave calves till they are almost comatose or severely dehydrated when in doubt give oral electrolytes. Any calf that has any amount of diarrhea will benefit from oral fluids. Only withdraw milk for half-day tops. Maintain the electrolytes until the diarrhea has stopped. Feed electrolytes up to four times daily (1-1.5 litres per treatment) and use lukewarm water. Inbetween have the calves suck if possible. Know your limits and when the dehydration or acidosis is getting ahead of you call for professional help. Calves severely dehydrated (sunken in eyeballs), those down and can’t stand or comatose need veterinary attention and intravenous fluids in order to survive. It is amazing the severely dehydrated calves that will respond. Be careful in transportation as sudden movements can send them into shock. Warm them up as much as possible with hot water bottles, hot blowers or heating pads. We still cover all calves with antibiotics to protect against septicemias (blood infections), meningitis, pneumonias, bacterial scours etc. Use the one your veterinarian recommends and lets hope we can keep scours, dehydration or acidosis to a minimum in this year’s calf crop. With early intervention, vigorous electrolyte treatments with good quality products and following both the prevention your veterinarian recommends as well as treatments most clinical scours cases can be saved and prevented from spreading to other calves.

Beef Stew Provençal Version: Add 8 oz (250 g) button mushrooms when cooking garlic and onions. Substitute dry red wine for stock. Use thyme (as above) or substitute herbes de Provençe for thyme. Instead of potatoes and carrots, use 2 cups (500 mL) cut green beans and ½ cup (125 mL) black olives (pitted and halved).

Knowledge is Power Wes Mack – Chairman Breed Improvement Committee

M

y first involvement with Simmental began 45 years ago in 1970. American Breeders Services put on an informational meeting in Beaubier, SK to discuss crossbreeding with continental beef breeds. Hundreds of cattlemen packed the town hall to learn more about these new breeds. A slide show was presented with pictures of Simmental/Fleckvieh, Maine Anjou, Limousin, Gelbvieh, and Chianina. Bulls of all shapes and colors were promoted and the room was abuzz with excitement and anticipation as for many attendees this was their first exposure to these European breeds. You have to remember this was 1970 and there were no computers or internet to Google. There really wasn’t a lot of information available on the bulls; there were no EPD’s, sire summaries or DNA tests to make any genetic decisions. Just a picture of a big heavy muscled, raw boned bull and a guarantee they would increase performance. Many cattlemen questioned the calving ease of these big breeds. Was there too much bull for their Angus, Hereford or Shorthorn cows? Again, no EPD’s or real data to suggest they would calve, just recommended not to use on heifers. Simmental gathered most of the attention and discussion. Being a dual purpose breed in Europe we were assured Simmental would be maternal. Frame, performance and milk, they would be a good cross for our British cowherd. We calved our first Simmental in the spring of 1971 and they were exciting times on the farm as the first calves by Parisien and Bismark were born. Our weaning weights increased dramatically and those half-blood cows were the start of our Simmental herd. Today we operate under the name of Prairie Wind Farms Ltd, in Estevan, SK. Along with my brother Brian, we run 140 Red and Black Simmental cows and farm 2000 acres of farm land with another 2000 in hay and pasture land. We consign bulls to the Proudly Western Bull Sale in Whitewood, SK and sell females through Simmsational. I became a CSA director in 2012 and have been involved with the Breed Improvement Committee since that time, currently serving as its Chairman. I would like to take this opportunity to explain what the committee’s purpose or mission is, which is to deliver sound programming and providing tools that will assist our members in developing sound breeding decisions to produce the best genetics possible. My committee consists of some of the most progressive and successful cattlemen in the country. They include Ken Lewis, Dave Erixon, Darryl Perkin, Lee McMillen, Dave Milliner, Brian Bouchard and Kelly Ashworth. Together we are focused on the development of the breed and its strengths and working to deliver services that will enhance the breeds popularity and profitability. Simmental is one of the most influential cattle breeds in Canada and one of the most populous in the world. We must ensure the cattle we are producing are “real world” cattle. They

must be accepted by the commercial cow-calf operator and they must be sound, functional, and efficient while able to fit into any environment. I think we are as close to the commercial needs as at any time in our breed’s history. I attribute this to sound breeding decisions and management provided by the breeders combined with the work the CSA has done. By using EPD’s as a tool in your management, producers have been able to select for a single trait or select an animal with a balanced set of EPD’s. Strengths are recognized and weakness in specific traits may be eliminated however understanding that when selections are made for a single trait you often give up in another, for example, selection for calving ease may result in lost performance. Genomics, the study of DNA, is going to play a huge role in the beef cattle industry as it already has in other species and the CSA is proud to be one of the leaders in this technology. Along with the usual weight traits, three traits of economic importance were established to gather information on: Fertility, Meat Quality and Relative Feed Intake. This data will be further analyzed as part of our Simmental Innovations infrastructure and integrated at various stages into our North American Genetic evaluation. This will provide more accuracy to our data base which consists of information other breeds through its multibreed structure as well as from the South African and American Simmental populations. A cutting edge and inclusive evaluation that will increasingly add value to the North American Beef industry. Breeders are of course encouraged to also use all the traditional tools available to them including visual appraisal, and performance records as you wouldn’t buy a tractor, pickup or a baler unless you had as much information as possible. The breeding decisions you make today will affect your herd for many, many years to come. As a breed we have so many options: Red, Black, Traditional, Horned, and Polled; that’s what makes us so popular. We have a diverse genetic package available for whatever your operation demands. Yes we’ve had some problems over the years. Some of them we created ourselves. The tall, narrow, shallow types are gone, they were not commercially accepted and really didn’t have much to offer the beef industry. As a breed we have learned and grown from our mistakes. We now have the research and development, the tools and the data to keep us on course. If you have any concerns or issues please do not hesitate to contact myself, a BIC member or a CSA Director. Hope you have a great calving season and good luck with your bull Sales. Wes Mack Chairman BIC - CSA Director 59

From the Director’s Chair

My name is Sophie Wotten and I am very honoured to be the current president of the Young Canadian Simmental Association. Growing up with Simmental cattle, I have always had a passion for this breed and all of the great people who bring it to life. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with an outstanding board of directors and a great group of juniors from coast to coast. With my passion for agriculture, it was only fitting that I would study at the University of Guelph. Now in my third year, I have only one year left before graduating with a Marketing Management and Communications degree. I aspire to one-day work in the agricultural sector. I look forward to seeing breeders and juniors from coast to coast at this years YCSA National Classic in Lindsay Ontario. It is shaping up to be the event of the year for our breed. I hope to see everyone there. Sophie Wotten YCSA President My name is Dylan Foley. Alongside my father we operate a herd of Traditional, Red and Black Simmentals in Kinburn, Ontario. Keeping cattle alongside Barb Vance of V5 Simmentals. We exhibit our cattle throughout Ontario and Quebec. My family has kept Simmental influenced commercial cattle for years but became more involved with purebreds at the start of my 4H and YCSA involvement. I have been active within the YCSA program since I was eligible. This year will be my first year served as President of the Ontario YCSA. The YCSA has allowed me to be involved with experienced cattle breeders and learn about many different aspects of this diverse breed. With exciting times being marked for the beef industry and the Simmental breed, I encourage all youth to become involved in YCSA. Dylan Foley YCSA Ontario Director

DID YOU KNOW... THE HERD LETTER FOR 2015 IS

“C”

Genotype Test Requirements

As decided by the CSA board of directors and effective January 1, 2015 all Simmental sires are required to be genotyped using a minimum 50K SNP panel. Natural Service Sires will now require the same level of genotype testing as AI sires who have had this requirement since November of 2012. This is a higher density, more informative panel that will add value to the Simmental genetic evaluation. All donor females continue to require a 50K test. If you have any questions, please contact the CSA office toll free at 1-866-860-6051 or 403-250-7979.

Genotyping Turnaround Time

In preparation for the upcoming bull sale season, members are reminded of the need to allow a minimum 4 week turnaround time from the time they send the samples to the lab for genotyping until they receive results.

Mandatory Identification

Under the Animal Pedigree Act, and per CSA by-laws, it is mandatory that all Simmental animals be identified with an ear tattoo in order to be eligible for registration in the CSA Herd Book. It is the responsibility of all CSA members to ensure that all Simmentals sold as registered animals are legibly tattooed and that the tattoo corresponds with the animal’s registration paper. Any member who contravenes a By-law of the Association relating to the individual identification of animals may be expelled or suspended and in accordance with section 61 of the Animal Pedigree Act may be denied the right to have registered or to transfer the ownership of the cattle.

CSA Board Meeting

The CSA Board of Directors will be meeting in Calgary on March 23 – 24, 2015. The Breed Improvement and Promotions Committees will also be meeting during these days. If you have items of breed improvement or promotion nature or question, please feel free to contact the CSA President, Kelly Ashworth, BIC Chair, Wes Mack or Promotions Chair, Lacey Fisher.
