CANADIAN HEREFORD ASSOCIATION Report Submitted by michael latimer- CHA executive director

As we roll into 2026 we look forward to strong cattle markets that will continue strengthening our industry and provide a strong platform for the next generation of Hereford breeders to build from. This market strength can be attributed to low cattle numbers in the primary beef producing countries around the world along with strong consumer demand for healthy natural products which includes beef. The Hereford breed remains one of the largest breeds in Canada and we are seeing a resurgence in the demand for the white face on red and black cattle. The Baldy is the most popular crossbred cow and there is only one real way to have it and that is with Hereford genetics. Initiatives such as the Heifer Select Program that we are collaborating with other breeds will serve to strengthen the Hereford influence in the commercial cowherd. The new Hereford Inventory Genotyping Project is now available for Canadian Hereford Members who participate in the THE program. This new initiative is available for a limited time and will allow for breeders to genomically test their complete female inventory at the reduced rate of $40 per animal. The test is our regular CHA Standard Test that includes the same add-ons, just at a lower price. The add-ons include parentage, genetic conditions (except MD), horned/polled, and genomically enhanced EPDs. By completing the testing on your female inventory, you will alleviate many future parentage issues as your herd will have increased pedigree accuracy and this will be an additional attribute to differentiate your program to prospective customers. The concept for this initiative was a result of a presentation on the PACE evaluation at the World Hereford Conference

in Kansas City where it was shown that Canadian Herefords had a proportionately low percentage of our herd genotyped as compared to most Hereford associations around the world or other Canadian breed associations. We took this personal and set out to develop a program that didn’t mandate additional testing through policies but encouraged additional testing through added value and price breaks. This program achieves this and within only a few days of the program being available we have had a tremendous response from several herds, both Horned and Polled. If you are interested in participating contact the CHA office for more information. The Canadian Hereford Foundation National Select Sale that was held at the Red Coat Reception during Agribition was a success. The sale raised just over $36,000 which exceeded expectations and on behalf of the Foundation I would like to thank the donors, buyers, service providers, sale committee members and the Saskatchewan Hereford Association for making room for the auction during their reception. The Foundation is new and is finding its way and this is a great start. The proceeds will be used for youth development and education programs that will benefit the Hereford breed and beef industry. We are excited that this year Bonanza will be hosted in Richmond Quebec from July 21-25, 2026. The CHA Annual General Meeting will be held at Bonanza on July 24, 2026. I look forward to seeing everyone there whether you bring cattle or participate in other ways.

World Hereford Conference By: Emma Cross

The World Hereford Conference brings together Hereford breeders from around the globe every four years to network, learn, and experience the Hereford breed in action in a different region. The 2025 World Hereford Conference was hosted in Kansas City, Missouri, attracting several Canadian representatives to attend. Prior to the main conference programming, the Herefords in Big Sky Country pre-tour took attendees through Montana. Canadian representatives on this portion of the event included Patrick and Karen Huestis, Trevor and Janice Tapp, and Mary Kate Robertson and Alvin Pawlitza. The group toured NJW Polled Herefords, the Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE), L Bar W Cattle Company, Feddes Herefords, Churchill Cattle Company, Storey Hereford Ranch, and Cooper Hereford Ranch. After a day to tour the scenery on their own, pre-tour attendees joined up with the rest of the conference delegation to take in the main program of the World Hereford Conference. The American Hereford Association welcomed guests with tremendous hospitality, offering a Welcome Beef Festival at their head offices and the Global Celebratory Gala at Arrowhead Stadium. Conference programming included a variety of sessions on genetic improvement, animal health, and sustainability. Highlights for the Canadian delegation included hearing international country reports and attending the American Hereford Association Annual General Meeting to compare the opportunities and challenges across the world to our own in Canada.

As the pre-tour and conference took place, Canadian youth were participating in the Young Breeder Competition, which brought together eleven teams from seven countries to showcase their skills. Canada sent two teams to the event, as well as two alternates, Kailey Wirsta and Matthew Charlton. After a welcome mixer in Kansas City, teams headed off to Kansas State University for supper at the K-State Alumni Center. Competitors were thrown into the deep end right off the bat. On day one, teams started off bright and early with an individual written test covering the American Hereford Association history and programs and general cattle knowledge. Teams then evaluated a set of live finished steers via video, calculating their yield grade, quality grade, and profit or loss, ultimately ranking the class on profitability. The morning was rounded out with a set of team practicums. First, teams scored a set of 9 cows on udder and foot conformation. Next, a written test assessed teams’ knowledge of cattle nutrition and feeds. Finally, teams were given a description of a farm and asked to design a herd health protocol, breeding, and marketing program. The afternoon of day one brought the livestock judging contest, which had contestants evaluate six classes of cattle, market hogs and market lambs and deliver oral reasons on two classes of cattle. To wind down a big day, teams toured the K-State Vanier Football Complex and had supper at Bill Snyder Stadium with guest speaker Justin McKee of The Cowboy Channel.

AHA National Reference Sire Program at Olsen Ranches - WHC Post Tour

To start day two, teams heard a presentation on the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility and toured the K-State Stocker Unit. Based on the results of the written test the day before, Team Red Coats qualified for the Hereford Bowl Buzzer Round, which challenged both knowledge and speed as we buzzed in to provide the correct answer to live quiz questions. After lunch, contestants headed to the K-State Meat Lab for the Meat Evaluation Contest, where we evaluated the carcasses from the live steers evaluated the day prior, as well as classes of beef ribs and short loins. The group finished out the day with a tour and supper at Spring Hill Herefords. To conclude the Kansas State University portion of the event on day three, teams participated in a Communications Challenge. All teams were given the same set of four popular American AI sires and asked to deliver a presentation on how they would fit into a breeding program in the team’s home country. Both Canadian teams took a unique approach to the challenge, designing realistic Canadian operations that could integrate all four sires in different areas, rather than describing each sire’s fit in a different herd. The afternoon drive back to Kansas City before the Welcome Beef Festival offered contestants a welcome break and chance to visit with fellow competitors from around the world. For the next two days, contestants had the chance to join the rest of the World Hereford Conference and take in some conference programming. At the same time, teams were matched up with breeders exhibiting at the American Royal and assigned animals for showmanship and fitting. We spent much of these two days gathering show supplies and preparing our cattle as we took in the sights and sounds of the American Royal. Wednesday also took teams to Jensen Ranch’s The Chosen Sale.

The final day of the World Hereford Conference brought all attendees to the American Royal Complex, in part to take in the final day of the Young Breeder Competition. Teams were given 40 minutes to fit their assigned animal in the team fitting competition, working with whatever materials they could buy and gather in the days prior. After fitting, teams were given a second animal for the individual showmanship competition. The day concluded with the Young Breeder Competition awards ceremony. Canadian Team National Selects and Team Red Coats were proud to finish third and fourth overall, closely behind the two home American teams. Leading up to the competition, the Canadian teams met every two weeks to learn, practice, and plan with the help of CHA Board Members Lance Leachman, Heather Ribey, and Jamie O’Shea. These three breeders went above and beyond to invite guest

speakers, design content and practice contests, and offer support and advice to our teams. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Lance, Heather, and Jamie for putting in a massive amount of time and effort to make sure we were prepared to represent Canada competitively on the world stage. Other guests chose to take in the Southbound to Cowtown post-tour, which traversed through Texas and Oklahoma. This tour took attendees to Express Ranches, Bar A Cattle, GKB Cattle, the Fort Worth Stockyards, Buck Cattle Co., Moore Cattle Co., Oklahoma Steel and Wire, and D&H Cattle Co. Canadians on both tours enjoyed the chance to network with breeders who have imported and exported genetics to and from Canada. The World Hereford Conference offered all attendees the chance to see the impact of the Hereford breed around the world and create connections with fellow breeders internationally. We look forward to the next World Hereford Conference in the UK in 2028.

Introduce yourself! What is your name, and age and a little about yourself. Hi, I am Jayce Myer and I am 16 years old, son of Stephen and Christine Myer. I have two younger siblings named Karli and Landen. I am also a proud Hereford farmer and the fourth generation at Standard Hill Livestock. We run about 200 head and have our annual bull sale on March 13 this year, as well as an Open House in August. I help with everything around the farm. I run all of the equipment and know all the cows like the back of my hand. I go to school in Maidstone and am in grade 11.

How many years have you been apart of the SJHA? I have been part of the SJHA all my life, since I was given one Hereford cow from my parents. I now have 5 generations of calves from her, and seven Hereford cows to calve this year. Are you in 4-H? What club are you apart of? I am part of the Maidstone Gully Multiple 4-H Club. I have been in 4-H for 11 years. I’ve held the Treasurer position and am now the Vice President. I have been in many projects including beef, archery, vet science and coffee club (my favourite being beef). What is your favourite thing about showing cattle? My favourite thing about showing cattle is simply just being around the animals, as long as they are behaving. I like to show our genetics and it is good to compare it to others.

Have you attended Bonanza or Beef a Rama? What is your favourite memory from these events if you have? Unfortunately, I have not attended any Hereford specific shows. I have shown lots of Hereford cattle though, in 4-H, at Stockade Round-Up, and Agribition. At Agribition, we usually take part in the Bull Pen Alley show. One of the memories that I have from being at a cattle show, was when someone came up to me and complimented my heifer. He said that he liked her a lot and wanted to use her genetics in his own herd. It was very rewarding to see showing cattle directly pay off. Another memory I have, was in the junior show at Round-Up. I was in the bull calf class, leading a Hereford, against a bunch of Angus calves. After much consideration, the judge couldn’t pass up on the Hereford bull and I got reserve champion. What do you like to do in your free time? Do you have any hobbies or interests? My main interest is farming and ranching, so I don’t have a lot of spare time as many of you reading would know. But when I do make time for something, it is usually curling. I have done a lot of curling and am curling at least two nights a week. I’m on the High School team, 4-H team and participating in league. I am interested in other things like hunting and fishing, but I can’t seem to make enough time for them because we always have something going on with the farm and that is priority.

What are your plans for further education or career after graduating high school? After High School I plan on going to college or university for an Ag course. I will likely take animal or crop science. After however many years of school I can tolerate, I plan on coming back home to the farm because I have a large passion for it. What is your favourite things about Hereford cattle? What do you think more people should know about the Hereford breed? My favourite thing about Hereford cattle is their hardiness. Herefords are very feed efficient and can convert and thrive on seemingly little food. Having both Angus and Herefords, I can compare them a bit. The black ones are always hungry and the first to the feed truck, no matter what time of year. Another thing I like is that Herefords are typically more docile. Herefords also have crossbreeding advantages because of how feed efficient they are, mothering qualities, and they cross well with any breed. Who is someone in the breed you look up to? What about them is inspiring to you? Someone I look up to that is in the Hereford breed would be my dad, Stephen Myer. He was on the Sask Hereford board for many years before he decided to retire. It is inspiring because he was President at a young age. I have also had the pleasure of meeting many long time Hereford breeders through tours, field days and showing cattle.
