PRESIDENT’S REPORT

BY KAITLYN MCMURPHY The Saskatchewan Hereford Association recently held our annual general meeting on June 27th at the Livestock and Forage Centre of Excellence. We had good member turnout to enjoy the beef on a bun lunch, followed by a thought-provoking update from Scott Wright on upcoming genetic research and its potential influence on purebred cattle production. We toured the research facility and then got down to business, electing our new board members. We were pleased to welcome Bernadette Garrett, Shana Fraser, Morgan Klepak, and Jesse Procyk to the board. James Hordos completed his maximum 9-year term on the board while Tyler Arthur, Roger Procyk and Chelsey Mitchell stepped away. We are extremely appreciative of the hard work and dedication these directors have put into the board over the years. The executive remained the same with myself as President and Trevor Airriess as Vice President. Sarah Hordos remains as our Administrative Coordinator, managing both Secretary and Treasurer responsibilities. The next generation of Saskatchewan Hereford enthusiasts have had a very busy and successful year. More than 130 gift cards were mailed to 4-H members exhibiting Hereford influenced projects from 36 4-H clubs. Once again members who won champion and reserve champion at regional shows with their Hereford influence projects will be receiving custom jackets from the association.

One of our largest fundraiser initiatives for the year is the Red Coat Membership Raffle. The grand prize is a $5,000 sale credit towards the purchase of a Hereford bull or female at any sale Canada-wide or a $3,000 cash prize. There are over $20,000 worth of secondary prizes including sale and service credits. To get your hands on a ticket before they are sold out, reach out to any SHA board member. The Southeast Field Day was held on August 15th at Dale and Stacey Hewitt’s near Wawota, SK. A large crowd was in attendance to view the nearly 113 head of cattle, including the upcoming calf crop from various operations across the province. It’s full steam ahead as preparations are well under way for the Red Coat Reception on Wednesday, November 25th. The evening is hosted at the Atlas Hotel during Agribition and features a prime rib dinner, silent auction and the National Select sale. The evening is a great way to kick-off your Agribition visit or get a break from the barns in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. This fall is sure to be an exciting one, we look forward to catching up with you during the fall sale run or in the barns of Agribition and would love to host you for an evening at our Red Coat Reception. GUENTHER RANCH

Our family ranch began in 1980 when Brian and Cheryl Guenther (Babecy) purchased the home quarter outside of Lanigan, SK. They started out with a couple of horses and a stud. In1981 Brian and Cheryl got married and as a wedding gift Cheryl's parents gifted them 3 bred heifers. Thus beginning our cattle herd. Fast forward to 2026 the family has grown to 3 generations with Brian and Cheryl, their 3 daughters Amber, Ashley and Malorie; son in laws Adam, Cory and James; and 3 grandchildren Ryker, Adley and Adalyn. The cow herd has grown to 600 females, and the horse herd numbers have increased dramatically.

The ranch is operated by Brian and Cheryl, alongside their daughters Ashley and Malorie, and their families. Amber and her husband started their own farm by Hendon, Sk. Luckily with us living close enough together, we help each other out when extra hands are valued. The cow herd is made up predominantly of horned Hereford, Angus, Gelbvieh and some Simmental genetics. It would have been roughly 30 years ago when we first introduced horned Hereford bulls into our program, purchased from Bill and Agnus Blair, and it is a breed we have kept ever since in our bull battery. In the last several years we've been purchasing Hereford bulls and replacement heifers from the Garrett Ranch. There are multiple traits that the hereford genetics brought into our herd that we value. We wanted to take advantage of hybrid vigor for growth and we found that the herefords crossed really well with our angus and gelbvieh cows. For the most part we aim to breed all our solid black and red cows to hereford bulls, and our white and brockle-faced cows to the gelbvieh, simmental or angus bulls. We have been very happy with our weaning weights and our uniformity in our calves come fall. Raising our own females for replacements is very important to us, as we find our home raised animals do better than some we have purchased as they are used to our weather, feeding program, and most importantly, our water. Some of the qualities we find the hereford genetics bring to our females is their docile temperament; which has become even more important as our herd size has increased. Hair coat; over the years we have noticed how much better the Hereford cross cows handle the cold conditions better and are more apt to come to the feed pile than hide in the bush like some of the others in -30 conditions. Udder; when we pushed our calving dates back to the spring and now calve on pasture we found that our hereford cross cows udders stay moderately sized and last longer. When it comes to picking out bulls we look for producers that have a strong program where they are picky on quality, especially conformation. Having breeding stock with good feet and bone structure, and that are not over fed, is key to long lasting bulls that can cover the ground and last the whole season. Calving ease has also become quite important, as we calve on pasture and want to minimize how many cows we need to assist. Lastly, we really like programs that utilize horses as we do all our work by horseback. We sort, doctor, pull bulls all from our horses so having bulls that have been exposed to them from birth makes a big difference. We have been lucky over the years to have long lasting relationships with the producers we purchase bulls from. Along with our cattle we raise quarter horses, mainly marketing towards ranch and rope horses. The two programs work effortlessly together, as our cattle herd wouldn't function without the use of our horses, and in turn our horses get real life experience that gives them a step up when it comes to marketing them. The hereford breed has become a staple in our cattle program, and will continue to be in the future. We find the traits from the breed have improved our female replacements and our marketability on calves in the fall.

TRADE SCHOLARSHIP MALCOLM CARTER - Bouctouche, NB.

Malcolm Carter is from Bouctouche, New Brunswick, where he is graduating this June from École Clément Cormier. His connection to the Hereford breed began in early childhood on his uncle’s small hobby herd of purebred Herefords, Angus, and crossbred cattle, where he helped with daily chores, barn repairs, and showing at the local county fair. When his uncle was forced to sell the herd about eight years ago due to health issues, Malcolm channeled his love of cattle into 4-H, borrowing animals from family friends and neighbours until his uncle made him an offer: two purebred Hereford heifer calves in exchange for Malcolm putting in the work himself. Over the past four years, Malcolm has grown that herd to eight head, joined the Canadian Hereford Association, and shown across New Brunswick with his sights set on someday competing at Bonanza. This fall he will enroll in the plumbing program at the New Brunswick Community College’s Moncton campus, having already secured admission for Fall 2026. He was drawn to the trade because he sees it as one of the most essential, if overlooked, pieces of any farm operation — every animal and every acre of crops depends on reliable water systems, and someone has to install and maintain them. Malcolm’s long-term goal is to earn his Red Seal certification and eventually start his own plumbing company focused on serving farmers across the province. Alongside his trade career, he plans to keep building his Hereford herd and stay active in the Canadian Hereford Association and the Maritime cattle show circuit, keeping his connection to agriculture just as central to his life as his work with pipes and water systems.

HEREFORD YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP ALLISON MORSE - Eastern Townships, QC.

Allison Morse grew up in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, splitting her time between Hatley and Ayer’s Cliff. She has spent her whole life immersed in the Hereford breed through her family’s Sonmar Simmentals Farm, where she has worked since 2015 raising a Hereford-influenced commercial herd, exhibiting livestock at local, provincial, and national shows, and assisting with breeding decisions. A Canadian Junior Hereford Association member and a fixture of the Quebec 4-H scene since 2012, including multiple terms as president of the Hatley 4-H club, Allison also serves as Quebec Director and secretary of the Canadian Junior Angus Association and is helping host Showdown 2026 in Ayer’s Cliff. Allison is currently enrolled at McGill University, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Environmental Sciences with a major in Sustainable Farming Systems. Her studies build directly on a lifetime spent around livestock and crop decisions on her family’s farm, and she has paired her coursework with hands-on jobs at a local cheese shop and on her family’s cattle operation. Allison’s career goal is to become a full-time agronomist in Quebec, working directly with farmers on crop production decisions in the field. She plans to stay closely tied to the Hereford breed by continuing to work on her family farm and adding Hereford genetics to their commercial herd for their docility, calving ease, and adaptability, while also mentoring the next generation of junior Hereford members the way she has throughout her years in 4-H and the CJHA.

HEREFORD YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP KALLA NICHOLAS - Milestone, SK.

Kalla Nicholas is from Milestone, Saskatchewan, where she grew up on her family’s multigenerational farm. She has been a member of the Saskatchewan Junior Hereford Association since 2011 and now serves as its Vice President, mentoring younger members and helping plan provincial events, and she spent more than a decade with the Milestone 4-H Beef Club, holding every executive position from secretary to president. She is currently in her third year at the University of Saskatchewan, working toward a degree in Animal Science with a minor in Agribusiness. Alongside her coursework, Kalla has completed summer internships with Corteva Agriscience and Cargill Crop Inputs, gaining hands-on experience in agronomy, crop protection, and retail sales. After graduation, Kalla plans to gain outside experience in animal nutrition or crop input sales before eventually returning home to take over and expand her family’s farming operation, all while continuing to produce quality Hereford genetics. She intends to stay connected to the breed through the SJHA and her family’s herd, carrying the mentorship and leadership she found there into the next chapter of her career.

HEREFORD YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP LILLY HOWELL - Penhold, AB.

Lilly Howell hails from Penhold, Alberta, and comes from deep Hereford roots — her mother, Sara Howell (Latimer), grew up at Remitall Cattle Company during its heyday on the national show circuit, and Lilly’s uncle, Bryan Latimer, still breeds Hereford genetics today at Remitall West. Her own family’s operation, Fairland Cattle Company, is returning to the breed her mother loves, recently adding Hereford genetics from Remitall West and the Flewelling family. Lilly is a CJHA member who won fifth overall senior showmanship at the 2025 Bonanza in Olds, Alberta. Lilly is currently a student-athlete at the University of Arizona, pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Accounting and a minor in Agribusiness Economics and Management while playing NCAA Division 1 women’s hockey. She is completing a summer internship this year as an articling accountant on the agriculture team at MNP LLP. Her goal is to return home to Alberta, earn her CPA designation, and open her own accounting firm specializing in agriculture-focused financial services, helping fellow farmers and Hereford breeders access the business support they need. She also plans to stay connected to the industry through her role as Treasurer of the Alberta Junior Angus Board and by remaining active in her family’s cow-calf operation.

KEITH GILMORE FOUNDATION (KGF) PRIZE ARLIS HANSON - Val Marie, SK.

Arlis Hanson is from Val Marie, Saskatchewan, where Hereford genetics run generations deep in his family — his grandparents, Howard and Fern, operated H Lazy H Herefords, and his greatgrandfather, Francis Olson, raised purebred Herefords in the same area. Arlis has been part of his family’s VBP+-certified seedstock and commercial operation since 2015, developing a particular passion for producing functional horned Hereford and commercial black baldy cattle, and he now also runs his own registered herd on leased native grassland. He is currently in his second year at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, part of the Class of 2029. Alongside his studies, Arlis has trained in embryo transfer, launched his own cattle service business, Heritage Livestock, offering artificial insemination, freeze branding, and hoof trimming, and completed the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association Young Leaders Program.

After graduation, Arlis plans to return to rural southwestern Saskatchewan to establish a large-animal veterinary practice specializing in ambulatory cattle care, while continuing to expand his own purebred and commercial herd and eventually host his own annual bull sale. He intends to stay closely tied to the Hereford breed and agriculture more broadly by combining his veterinary practice with hands-on ranching, mentoring, and continued involvement in the Canadian Hereford Association.

HEREFORD YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP JAYCE FOSSEN - Forestburg, AB.

Jayce Fossen grew up in Forestburg, Alberta, one generation removed from the family farm but immersed in agriculture and the beef industry from an early age through family, friends, and his rural community. He joined his local 4-H beef club at age eleven and spent nine years showing and learning alongside cattle producers, an experience that shaped his long-term commitment to the beef cattle industry. Jayce is currently pursuing a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at the University of Calgary, building on a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and a Master of Science in Large Animal Clinical Sciences, both from the University of Saskatchewan, where his graduate research examined antimicrobial use and resistance in western Canadian cow-calf herds. Between degrees, he worked as a Livestock Development Intern and Provincial Traceability Specialist with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture and as a project coordinator for the Canadian Cow-Calf Health and Productivity Enhancement Network. His long-term goal is to become a rural mixed-animal veterinarian in Alberta or Saskatchewan, providing foodanimal care while continuing to support producer-driven research and bridge the gap between science and the working ranch. Jayce plans to stay connected to agriculture through continued involvement in organizations such as the Canadian Cattle Association and the Beef Cattle Research Council, ongoing 4-H volunteering, and his broader work supporting the health and productivity of the Canadian beef cattle industry.

FUTURE OF THE BREED SCHOLARSHIP ABBY MACDONALD - Orangeville, ON.

Abby MacDonald is from Orangeville, Ontario, where she has been a Canadian Junior Hereford Association member for close to a decade. Her family shows Hereford cattle, and her aunt, Amy Pugh, serves as an OJHA Adult Advisor, keeping Abby involved in organizing provincial shows like Beef-A-Rama; Abby has attended six Bonanzas, shown Hereford twice at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, and taken part in the heifer lottery and semen donation programs with her own herd. This fall, Abby is enrolling at the University of Toronto Mississauga to begin a bachelor’s degree, with plans to pursue forensic science and become a forensic investigator. While her academic path is taking her outside agriculture, she has spent her high school years balancing her cattle work with a role as a piano and vocal teacher at a local music studio and performing with the Orangeville Music Theatre. Even as she builds a career in forensic science, Abby intends to stay closely connected to the Hereford breed: she plans to remain in 4-H until she ages out, keep her CJHA membership, and continue attending Bonanza and Beef-A-Rama with her family. Longer term, she hopes to follow in her aunt’s footsteps as a CJHA adult advisor and to pass the tradition on to her own children someday, keeping alive the friendships and community the breed has given her.

FUTURE OF THE BREED SCHOLARSHIP BRYSON LONGSTAFF - Bedell, NB.

Bryson Longstaff is from Bedell, near Woodstock, New Brunswick, and has spent his time working on a local potato farm and, before that, milking cows at a dairy operation. He has been a Canadian Junior Hereford Association member for four years and has built his own small purebred Hereford herd through the heifer lottery and semen donation programs, alongside eight years in his local 4-H club showing both dairy and beef cattle. Bryson has been accepted into Dalhousie University’s Agricultural Campus in Truro/Bible Hill, Nova Scotia, where he will begin a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with a major in Animal Science this fall. Bryson plans to pursue a career as either a large-animal veterinarian specializing in cattle or a cattle nutritionist focused on the Hereford breed, so he can help local Hereford producers in the Maritimes keep their herds healthy and well-fed. Alongside that career, he intends to grow his own herd to 20 to 30 head of purebred Hereford cattle, selling genetics to other producers and to young CJHA members just starting their own herds, much as others helped him get started.

FUTURE OF THE BREED SCHOLARSHIP PAIGE VAN SICKLE - Bowden, AB.

Paige Van Sickle is from Bowden, Alberta, a fourth-generation rancher on her family’s Rafter Double U Ranch, which her great-grandfather started after returning from the Second World War. She has been a CJHA member for sixteen years and currently serves as President of the Alberta Junior Hereford Association after two years as Vice President, and she won the overall aggregate award at the 2025 Bonanza in Olds, Alberta. This fall, Paige will begin the Kinesiology and Sport Studies diploma program in Fitness and Health Promotion at Red Deer Polytechnic. While the program itself isn’t agricultural, she chose a career alongside ranching in part to help offset the cost of raising cattle, and she plans to keep growing her herd throughout her studies. Paige intends to stay closely involved with both the Canadian and Alberta Junior Hereford Associations through their boards of directors and by continuing to attend provincial and national shows. She also plans to keep expanding her herd through the heifer lottery and semen donation programs, building on the foundation her family started nearly four generations ago.

FUTURE OF THE BREED SCHOLARSHIP RYAN TREFIAK - Edgerton, AB.

Ryan Trefiak is from Edgerton, Alberta, where his family operates MJT Cattle Company. His Hereford story began with his very first show heifer, Rosie, whom he showed at the Lloydminster Stockade Roundup and Farmfair International; a decade later, he is a CJHA member who has shown and judged at Bonanza and the National Junior Hereford Show multiple times, and does custom show-fitting work for Harvie Ranching and Hirsche Herefords at major shows like Farmfair International and Canadian Western Agribition. This fall, Ryan is heading to Iowa State University to study Agricultural Systems Technology, a program not offered in Canada, where he will build expertise in precision agriculture, automation, and data systems. After graduation, Ryan plans to return to Alberta as an agricultural systems specialist, supporting Hereford producers and other purebred breeders in adopting precision feeding, herd-health analytics, and breedingprogram data tools. He intends to keep attending Bonanza and mentoring younger CJHA members, bringing the technology he learns in Iowa back home to strengthen the breed he grew up showing.

Matthew Charlton is a dedicated cattle producer from Weyburn, Saskatchewan, where he was raised on his family’s mixed grain and cattle operation. The oldest of three children, Matthew developed a strong work ethic and passion for agriculture at a young age while also participating in a wide range of sports, including hockey, football, and lacrosse. He completed his education in Weyburn before earning his Diploma in Agriculture Management with a production major from Olds College. Today, he continues to farm in the Weyburn area while operating his own purebred Hereford herd. Matthew has been deeply involved in the Hereford breed for many years and is recognized for both his leadership and handson contributions to the industry. He has served as president of the Saskatchewan Junior Hereford Association and is currently the President of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association. Matthew is actively engaged in breeding and genetic improvement, utilizing artificial insemination and embryo transfer to advance his herd. He participates in numerous shows, sales, and industry events across Canada, and is well known for mentoring younger cattle enthusiasts while promoting the Hereford breed through both inperson involvement and online outreach. Looking forward, Matthew plans to continue expanding and improving his purebred Hereford operation while remaining actively involved in the broader cattle industry. His experiences traveling across Canada, working with leading breeders, and participating in national and international events have positioned him as a strong leader for the future. Rylee Rogers is an accomplished young agriculturalist from Drayton Valley, Alberta, where she was raised on the Rogers Family Farm alongside her family. Born in Edmonton and raised with deep roots in agriculture, Rylee developed a strong passion for livestock and the cattle industry from an early age. A graduate of Frank Maddock High School, where she earned valedictorian honours and the Governor General’s Award, Rylee went on to complete a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at the University of Alberta before being accepted into the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Rylee has demonstrated outstanding commitment to the Hereford breed through her involvement in both 4-H and junior Hereford programs. Beginning her cattle showing career at a young age, she has spent over a decade developing her purebred Hereford herd and showcasing cattle across the province and nationally. Rylee has held numerous leadership roles within the Alberta Junior Hereford Association and served as a Canadian Junior Hereford Association delegate, as well as Communications Officer. She has played a key role in organizing major industry events, including serving as treasurer for Bonanza 2025, while also promoting the breed through education, mentorship, and active participation in shows and industry initiatives. Looking ahead, Rylee is pursuing her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with the goal of becoming a large animal veterinarian and continuing to support the livestock industry. CANADIAN HEREFORD ASSOCIATION Report Submitted by michael latimer- CHA executive director

The record high cattle markets that we experienced in the first half of the year have cooled off, and the impact will be felt in the registered seedstock sector through the remainder of the year and possibly into next year. A positive is that consumer demand remains high for beef and with low cattle numbers around the globe markets it is anticipated that markets will remain strong even if they are off the recent peak.

Resulting from the project, commercial cattle producers can genetic test their animals and receive information on 23 traits on their females.To date, over 19,000 genetic tests across 62 herds have been submitted.

Expect fluctuations in cattle pricing with the recent re-opening of the US- Mexico border, trade disruptions and constant changes in international foreign policy. At the time of writing, there hasn’t been any rumblings of tariffs on Canadian beef, cattle or genetics into the US which is a positive for the maintaining supply lines and stable markets.

The concept is that once commercial cattle producers can measure the genetic merits of their replacement heifers that they will in turn source higher quality bulls to improve their herds. The Hereford data features prominently in the data set and will promote crossbreeding and the F1 Hereford Baldy.

The new Hereford Inventory Genotyping Project (HIGP) is now available for members who participate in the THE program. This new initiative is available until December 15 and will allow for breeders to genomically test their complete female inventory at the reduced rate of $40 per animal. The test is our regular CHA Standard Test that includes the same add-ons, just at a lower price. The add-ons include parentage, genetic conditions (except MD), horned/polled, and genomically enhanced EPDs. By completing the testing on your female inventory, you will alleviate potential parentage issues, your herd will have increased pedigree accuracy and will be an additional attribute to differentiate your program to prospective customers. We intended to develop a program that didn’t mandate additional testing through policies but encouraged additional testing through added value and price breaks. There has been a tremendous response from across Canda from herds of all sizes. If you are interested in participating contact the CHA office for more information. The CHA is collaborating with the Canadian Angus and Canadian Charolais Associations on the Heifer Select Program. This program is designed to align the seedstock and commercial cattle sectors for the implementation of genetic services.

This information is available utilizing the online portal provided by Helical, which is a respected global leader in animal genomics.

This program includes Genomics & Technical Support Advisor who works directly with commercial cattle producers to train them on recording animal data, collecting DNA samples, analyzing the genomic information. The Canadian Hereford Foundation’s National Select Sale will be held once again at the Red Coat Reception during Agribition. Last years sale was a success and exceeded expectations. I would like to thank the donors, buyers, service providers, and sale committee members for their support. Included in this year’s sale will be two lots with the proceeds going to the Keith Gilmore Foundation (KGF) who have supported Hereford youth through scholarships and other funding since 1987. The proceeds for this year’s sale will be used for several youth development initiatives and education programs that benefit the Hereford breed and its members. Bonanza 2026 in Quebec was a resounding success and congratulate the participants, organizers, and attendees on a job well done. We now turn our sights on Bonanza 2027 ‘Where Herefords Meet the Mountains’ which will be hosted in Barriere BC from July 19-24, 2027. The CHA and CJHA Annual General Meetings will be held during the week of Bonanza with the dates still to be confirmed. I look forward to seeing everyone there and throughout the fall run!

ingredients

• 3 medium Zucchini • 1 lb ground beef • ½ onion chopped • 1 ½ cups bread crumbs • ½ tsp salt • ¼ tsp pepper • 1 tsp garlic powder • ¼ cup margarine or butter

• ¼ cup flour • ½ tsp salt • 2 cups milk • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese • 1 tbsp melted margarine or butter

directions

• Slice zucchini and cook in boiling salted water until tender, about 5 minutes; drain. • Brown meat and onion. Stir in ½ cup of breadcrumbs, salt, pepper are garlic powder. Remove from heat. • Melt margarine and whisk in flour and ½ tsp salt. Add milk. Cook and stir until mixture thickens and bubbles. Add cheese; stir until melted. Add to meat mixture. • Put the zucchini in a 9x13 baking pan. • Pour the cheese mixture on top. • Combine remaining breadcrumbs with melted margarine and sprinkle on top of the meat and cheese mixture. • Bake at 350F for 35 minutes.

• 1 or 1 ½ lb pkg of Hereford ground beef • 1 tsp pepper • 1 tsp Italian seasoning • ½ yellow onion • 1 bell pepper • 1 can of “Pieces & Stems” mushrooms

• ½ tsp minced Garlic • 9-12 Oven ready Lasagna noodles • 500g container 2% Cottage Cheese • 3 cups shredded Old Cheddar Cheese • ½ cup of Cream Cheese • ¼ cup butter

directions

• Choose Hereford ground beef. Brown meat in a stovetop sauce pan and add seasonings. • Add diced onions, peppers, minced garlic, and mushrooms. Stir well and remove from heat. • Spray crockpot with cooking oil. Layer meat sauce on bottom of crockpot followed by noodles, cottage cheese and place cream cheese throughout. Cover with cheddar cheese. Repeat. • To finish, layer lasagna noodles as top layer with only the cheese, and several small scoops of butter scattered across. • Cook on low until noodles on top are soft.

• 2 cans mushroom soup • 1 can cheddar soup • 1 pkg onion soup mix • 1 ½ cups shredded cheese • Single layer of tater tots • Seasoning salt—to taste

directions

• Brown ground beef, onion and garlic. Season with salt and pepper. • Add frozen veggies. • Add canned soup add onion soup mix. • Stir to combine and simmer for few minutes. • Put in bottom of a deep 9x13 dish. • Top with shredded cheese. • Layer tater tots on top. • Sprinkle with seasoning salt. • Bake for 45 minutes on 350F or until top is brown and edges are bubbling.

PRESIDENT’S report

This past year has been one of transition for the Saskatchewan Hereford Association. With some long-serving directors completing their terms and a newly formed executive coming into their roles, it was very much a year of learning and growth. As an organization involved in a wide range of events and programs, there is never a shortage of work, and I’m proud of the collaboration of directors ensuring we continue to support the association’s initiatives and its members. The cattle market remained strong over the past year, with prices holding relatively steady in comparison to past years. At the same time, proposed traceability regulations have emphasized the importance of staying informed and engaged. These developments reinforce the value of member associations and highlight the need for clear, effective communication. As communication channels continue to evolve, it is increasingly important for both the association and individual members to take the initiative to stay informed. A great example is attending industry meetings and conferences such as this AGM. Attendance and participation not only strengthens our association but also supports the long-term success of individual operations. The SHA remained active throughout the year, participating in and supporting several key events, including; Ag in Motion, Agribition’s National Hereford Show, the Red Coat Reception and Membership Raffle, the National Select Sale, and our scholarship program. We were also pleased to introduce new initiatives such as the Cattle Call- Commercial Breeder Spotlight and the Commercial Breeder of the Year award, further strengthening connections with our commercial partners. We saw an increase in membership this year, which is encouraging for the future of our association. However, transfers were down. Accurate recording of sales and timely transfers play an important role in maintaining the integrity of our registration system and provides financial support to the provincial associations.

Supporting youth remains a key priority. Through our involvement in 4-H, we provided gift cards to all 4-H members in the province exhibiting Hereford influenced projects and Champion Hereford Influenced jackets to regional show champions. We continue our scholarship program and youth cattle show sponsorships. Supporting young people is essential to the future success of both our association and the beef industry as a whole. Our Red Coat Reception and Red Coat Membership Raffle continue to be our largest and most important fundraising initiatives. These events not only provide financial support but also serve as valuable opportunities to connect with members and industry partners. Over the past year, we have continued working closely with the Canadian Hereford Association communications committee to improve coordination between our organizations. We also promoted Hereford cattle through industry events, including hosting booths at Ag In Motion and Canadian Western Agribition, helping to raise awareness and showcase the strength of Hereford genetics in Saskatchewan. This year brought both new leadership and the departure of valued board members. We welcomed new directors Megan Wasden and Lorraine Serhienko. Trevor Airriess was elected as Vice President, and I as President. We also extend our deep appreciation to Rob O’Connor, who completed nine years of dedicated service on the board, along with Kristina Just and Julie Mortenson, who also stepped away this last year. Their contributions have had a lasting impact and are truly appreciated. A sincere thank you goes to Sarah Hordos for her continued work as Administrative Coordinator, managing both Secretary and Treasurer responsibilities. I want to thank our members for their patience and support over this past year as I stepped into my role as President. I am excited about the opportunities ahead and look forward to building momentum on new initiatives in the coming year. The beef business is a people business, by strengthening relationships within our breed and with our commercial customers, we build their confidence in the quality of our cattle and can continue to grow the presence and influence of Hereford genetics across Saskatchewan. Events & A dvertising COMMITTEE REPORTS

Once again, a highlight event for the SHA was our 3rd annual Red Coat Reception on Wednesday November 26th at the Atlas Hotel in Regina. This premier night included a catered beef dinner, presentations, silent auctions, the National Select Sale, the grand prize draw of the Red Coat Membership raffle and of course a great atmosphere to visit and connect with fellow Hereford enthusiasts. Proceeds from the National Select sale went directly to The Canadian Hereford Youth Foundation. Ryan Staudt of Vibank was the grand prize winner of the $5,000 sale credit to any Hereford sale in Canada. 20 secondary prize sale credits were won, graciously donated from breeders across the country. Planning is underway for next year’s reception with ambition to improve the event even further. Make sure to plan this evening as part of your Agribition experience for 2026!

AG IN MOTION

The Ag in Motion committee spent time at our “Better Your Beef” booth at the show again in 2025. Our booth is in an excellent location in the livestock pavilion. HMS Hi-Cliffe and Brookhill Farms had animals on display, as well as a nice booth set up with Hereford signage and advertising. The mix of purebred and commercial cattle on display was well received by visitors. The booth got lots of local traffic, as well as stops from many international visitors. 4-H AND YOUTH

The Saskatchewan Hereford Association is committed to supporting youth programs throughout the province. 2025 was another strong year for Hereford cattle being shown in the 4-H program in Saskatchewan. 127 gift cards were sent to 4-H members exhibiting Hereford and Hereford influence animals. Members that won grand or reserve champion at the Regional level also received jackets. Photos of members and their successful 4-H projects were shared on the SHA Facebook page and in the Cattle Call. In 2026 the SHA will again be sending out gift cards. The SHA continues to sponsor youth shows across Saskatchewan. In 2025 we sponsored the Yorkton Spring Steer and Heifer Show, Agribition Spring Fling, and Beef-a-Rama. New for this year, the board has created a formal sponsorship request form that will be available through the website. Canadian Western Agribition COMMITTEE REPORT

The 54th Annual Canadian Western Agribition was held Nov 24-29 2025 in Regina. Agribition was well attended from Hereford enthusiasts and overall the show set a new attendance record, with over 151,000 people attending throughout the week. Once again Agribition was a National show it was with the Champion bull coming out of Ontario and Champion female coming out of Alberta. The total number of entries was down from years previous, quality however was not. 138 head of competitive cattle went through the show ring under the eyes of judge Craig Wilgenbusch. In the CN Supreme, the Hereford

breed was represented very well with 3 entries being selected to the top ten. The Red Coat Reception was really well attended and is fast becoming a staple of the show and really kicks off three days where Hereford cattle people fill the barns. Dates are set for the 55th edition of CWA Nov 23-28 2026. The judge for the Western National Show will be Riley Lafrentz, Bienfait SK. Respectfully submitted, Jeremy Brooks

Communications COMMITTEE REPORT

The Saskatchewan Hereford Association expanded its Communications Committee this year, adding additional directors to strengthen outreach and better support our growing initiatives. We remain active on the SHA Facebook page, where you can find updates on programs and events, show winner highlights, scholarship announcements, sponsorship features, and more. To boost engagement, we continue to run photography contests, with winning images featured on either the Cattle Call cover or the SHA Facebook page banner. Today’s Publishing continues to partner with us on the Cattle Call, our website, and all print media advertising design. The Cattle Call maintains its twice yearly schedule, with fall and early winter issues, and advertising support remains steady. We have also enriched the publication with new content, including the Junior Member Spotlight, the Hereford Life column, and an outside industry feature to add value for readers. This year, the board placed greater emphasis on recognizing commercial breeders and showcasing their success with Hereford genetics. As part of this effort, we introduced a new Commercial Breeder Highlight column and reinstated the Commercial Breeder of the Year Award. The board continues to review the logistics of publishing and distributing the Cattle Call to ensure it remains effective and sustainable. Respectfully submitted, Megan Wasden

Canadian Hereford Association SUBMITTED BY MICHAEL LATIMER • EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR • JUNE 2026 Strong cattle markets have continued through the first half of 2026. Increased consumer demand for beef along with low cattle numbers around the globe are driving the continued high prices, which analysts predict will remain for the next few years. Hereford remains one of the largest breeds in both Canada and the USA. We are seeing a resurgence in the demand for the white face on red and black cattle. The Baldy is the most popular crossbred cow and there is only one real way to have it and that is with Hereford genetics. Hereford registration numbers across Canada remained stable with 9,929 new animals registered in 2025 (9,987 in 2024). Animal transfers across Canada increased slightly to 3,517 in 2025 (3,417 in 2024). Memberships have been stable for several years and we have seen as many new members join. In 2025 there were 808 members as compared to 822 in 2024. When we look closer at Saskatchewan, registrations were lower in 2025 at 2,994 (3,241 in 2024). Animals transfers from Saskatchewan members were also lower 1,233 in 2025 (1,341 in 2024). Annual Memberships were stable across the province with 158 in 2025 (164 in 2024). The new Hereford Inventory Genotyping Project (HIGP) is now available for members who participate in the THE program. This new initiative is available until December 15 and will allow for breeders to genomically test their complete female inventory at the reduced rate

of $40 per animal. The test is our regular CHA Standard Test that includes the same addons, just at a lower price. The add-ons include parentage, genetic conditions (except MD), horned/polled, and genomically enhanced EPDs. By completing the testing on your female inventory, you will alleviate potential parentage issues, your herd will have increased pedigree accuracy and will be an additional attribute to differentiate your program to prospective customers. We intended to develop a program that didn’t mandate additional testing through policies but encouraged additional testing through added value and price breaks. There has been a tremendous response from across Canada from herds of all sizes. If you are interested in participating contact the CHA office for more information. The CHA is collaborating with the Canadian Angus and Canadian Charolais Associations on the Heifer Select Program. This program is designed to align the seedstock and commercial cattle sectors for the implementation of genetic services. Resulting from the project, commercial cattle producers are able to genetic test their animals and receive information on 23 traits on their females. To date, over 17,000 genetic tests across 56 herds have been submitted. This information is available utilizing the online portal provided by Helical, which is a respected global leader in animal genomics. The concept is that once commercial Cattle Call 39

cattle producers can measure the genetic merits of their replacement heifers that they will in turn source higher quality bulls to improve their herds. The Hereford data features prominently in the data set and will promote crossbreeding and the F1 Hereford Baldy. This program includes Genomics & Technical Support Advisor who works directly with commercial cattle producers to train them on recording animal data, collecting DNA samples, analyzing the genomic information. The Canadian Hereford Foundation National Select Sale that was held at the Red Coat Reception during Agribition was a success. The sale raised just over $36,000 which exceeded expectations and on behalf of the Foundation I would like to thank the donors, buyers, service providers, sale committee members and the Saskatchewan Hereford Association for making room for the auction during their reception. The proceeds will be used for youth development and education programs that will benefit the Hereford breed and its members. The National Select Sale will be held during the Red Coat Reception again this year. We are excited that this year Bonanza will be hosted in Richmond Quebec from July 21-25, 2026. The CHA Annual General Meeting will be held at Bonanza on Thursday July 23, 2026. I look forward to seeing everyone there whether you bring cattle or participate in other ways.
