his prominent herd established in the early fifties is situated in the north eastern quadrant of Saskatchewan, some twenty kilometers north of Tisdale near the small village of Ridgedale. The surrounding area is noted for its rich loam soil and penned in the early years as the “Land of Rape and Honey,” as canola and legumes such as alfalfa and clover are the dominant crops... but the Sisson Brothers produced another black seed...Angus seed, which has influenced Aberdeen Angus herds around the globe to this very day.

Over a century ago in April 1914, Bert Sisson filed a claim on one of the last homesteads in the area stating it was half water and half bush. Just two years prior, he had signed on for a “Harvest Excursion” and caught the train from Peterborough, Ontario, came west and never returned to eastern Canada for the next twenty-three years and then, because of his mother’s illness. Having filed his homestead, Bert made the commitment of living and working on the land for six months of the year in order to maintain his homestead rights by clearing the land with the only means available, an axe and shovel. During the spring and summer months, Bert made what little income he could by working for a farmer in the Oxbow area. In 1910, Hazel McRae, third in a family of ten, moved along with her parents and siblings from Gladstone, Manitoba and settled in the Ridgedale area.

Hazel and Bert met at the local school house during a country social, later married and raised eight children... six girls and two boys... Glenn and Melvyn. The Sisson family lived on a mixed farm, one of grain, horses, hogs, chickens and in the early years dual purpose Shorthorn cattle - providing beef, milk and butter for the table, complemented by a large garden plot. The only things purchased were sugar and flour and not much else. They made “do” with what they had; the children in those days were “the hired hands” and did not question their chores, as perhaps is maybe done today...it was the way it was!

The oldest of the two brothers, Glenn lived his teenage years in the horse era. By the age of eleven, taught by his truly proud teamster father, Glenn was driving a sixhorse hitch and cultivating the Glenn and his grand kids fields. A couple of years later, Glenn was “schooled� well enough to drive a four-horse hitch team sowing the fields which he has done ever since... but the teams of horses faded away and the Sisson family purchased their first gas engine tractor (an International W30) in 1940. Previous to that, the grain was cut and bound with a binder, hand stooked and threshed using horses and a fork. A bit later and if you were lucky, the binder and the threshing machines were motor driven.

Mel, the youngest in the family, was never involved in the horse years... it is a part of Glenn’s legacy only. But horses remain for work and pleasure at Royal Angus as the boys check cows daily in the seat of a saddle; working, sorting and moving the herd has always been a pleasant task.

The brothers are an awesome team who share common goals in producing prime breeding stock. Glenn married Dorothy (Dot) Cassils and they raised two fine sons Everett and Terry who both chose to have jobs off farm. Mel remained single and spent many hours on the road whether it was for marketing, selecting the next herd bull or volunteering on boards and committees. The Sisson brothers were very voluntary on school and church boards and many facets of the purebred livestock industry. Glenn was the main cog at the home front working both crops and cattle, making Royal Angus ready for any day visitors... a tour, a visit and a wonderful meal presented by Dot.

The Royal Angus herd originated by Mel during his early years involved in 4-H. In his first year as a peewee, he showed a heifer calf; his second year calf was a steer which was sold and enabled him to purchase his first purebred heifer in 1953; thus the famous Royal Angus herd began.

During that era, the area was an Angus hotbed with the “Armley” herd of John R. Kingsley and the “Stathlea” herd of Harold Guloien. Soon after, Bert and Glenn drove over to Strathlea at White Fox, Saskatchewan and selected a package of heifers, along with a bull and in the original purchase, the “Eston Anne” family was established through Strathlea Matchless Ann 7; one of six major cow families in the herd to this very day.

The most important day of the herd establishment was June 17, 1967 when Mel attended the record breaking Deenboro dispersal for Wilf Willoughby at Alameda, Saskatchewan.

That day the Sisson brothers selected nine breeding females...these females became the cornerstone of the Royal Angus program...among the group was Pride Dolly of Deenboro 5L maternal dam of Royal Pride Dolly, which became one of their largest families. The “Pride” cow family might well be the largest and strongest and was established when the boys selected Ravenmere Pride 5, while Early Sunset Queen Mother 72 purchased from John Grant, Edam, Saskatchewan established the herd bull producing “Queen Mother” family. The Royal Blackbird family was built upon the selection of Willabar Blackbird 3E, bred by Glenmere Farms Ltd., Red Deer, Alberta. Sisson Brothers established the Royal Rosebud family with the purchase of Prairielane 0021 Rosebud 2033 from the Canning family, Souris, Manitoba...the family that produced Royal Added Value 19D...a Royal Show Champion in England.

By 1974, the Royal Angus herd had reached a point of “pride” in marketability. Glenn and Mel, along with Perryville Angus, Punnichy, Saskatchewan and Laurel Creek Angus, Abernethy, Saskatchewan, held their first production sale called the “Tri-Plex Angus Sale” which was conducted annually through to 1984. During that period several changes occurred, which included the Bells from Pense and the Grants Early Sunset Farm from Edam, Saskatchewan. In the first sale, Royal Eston Anne 46H was selected by Ellanvanin Farms, Gormley, Ontario, a descendent of the original Anne foundation female selected from Strathlea. She went on to be Grand Champion at both the 1977-78 Canadian National Exhibitions and a class winner at the 1977 Royal Winter Fair in Toronto.

From its beginning, the Sissons were great supporters of the famous CrossCountry Sale, Lacombe, Alberta. The Cross-Country Sale was established

by Lloyd Pickard and later managed

by Doug Henderson becoming a the premiere Angus seedstock sale in Canada, attracting Angus breeders from around the globe. Royal Angus Royal Pride Dolly 9J participated annually, saving their best for this event and had a great degree of success in marketing. In 1979, they topped the sale with Royal Pride Dolly 9J for $8400.00. In 1982 they again topped the event with Royal Pride 19M, selected by Sir William Farms in the state of New York for $26,250.00...consider how much that would be in today’s values. In addition to marketing high sellers they used the Cross-Country sale to select seedstock which included the purchase of Rivercrest Bardoliermere 23Z, a bull who left his mark on the Royal Angus herd. For many decades, Mel and Glenn, host an annual production sale called the “Black Pearl Bull and Female Sale.” (“Each year a buyers draw is held for a black cultured pearl...one for a bull buyer and one for a female buyer...Black pearls are of high quality and value, just like Angus cattle.”) In its first year, young Chris Poley, Poley Stock Farm, Weldon, Saskatchewan was a guest consignor and the sale was held in Saskatoon, but during the last decade it has been held at Edwards Livestock Center in Tisdale, much nearer to their commercial customers.

In 1976, they exhibited the Reserve Champion Female; in 1977 they exhibited Grand Champion Female with Perryville Angus; in 1986 they showed the Reserve Junior Champion Bull; the Heifer Calf Champion in 1987, and in 1993 showed the Reserve Grand Champion Bull. Mel will tell you, “We knocked on the door several times!”

In addition to their success in the North American market, Royal Angus has found success “across the pond.” Mel recalls, “Back in 1984 we had a good string of cattle at Agribition. During the week, we were frequently visited by an elderly gentleman with Santa Claus whiskers.

He appeared to take a liking to our exhibit and asked if we had any bulls at the farm. I told him we kept about ten coming two year olds each year, geared to market at the Regina Bull Sale each spring. The gentleman was David Evans of South Wales who patiently waited until the end of the week, then jumped in the truck and went home with me from Agribition. The next morning tour of the bull pen and the cow herd resulted in David selecting Royal Connection, by Rosebank Connection 69. The bull was used in the Queen Mother’s herd and from that point onward, it more or less opened the door for future sales to the British Isles.” During the eighties and into the nineties, two gentlemen from the United Kingdom, Bobby Lane and Neil Massie, visited Canada around the time of Farm Fair, which was the largest display of Angus under one roof in Canada. During the visit, they toured through parts of western Canada including Royal Angus. In 1994 they each selected a herd sire prospect. Bobby Lane chose Royal Westerner 10D, a son of Hoff Great Western out of Royal Blackbird 27Y while Neil selected Royal Added Value 19D, a son of Royal Stockman 23B and out of Royal Rosebud 61A. Royal Westerner 10D worked for Bobby Lane and was selected as National Grand Champion bull at the Royal Show as a three year old. Meanwhile Neil Massie’s selection, Royal Added Value 19D was used successfully behind closed doors for over six years and his progeny went on to claim many championships. When Neil Massie could no longer use the bull, he was sold to High House Farm in Ipswich, Suffolk, England owned

by Shadwell Estate Company Ltd., who are highly regarded in the Race horse industry and have a small herd of Angus breeding stock. At the age of eight years and five months and under the helm of Tony Miller (senior stockman for High House Farm), Royal Added Value 19D was selected National Grand Champion at the Royal Show. The amazing part of the story is two bulls from the same calf crop, exported in the same crate, from the same farm were both declared National Champions five years apart! Over the years Glenn and Mel have exported numerous bulls and females to England and Scotland, in addition to bulls sold south of the border to ranches in the northern United States.

Showing cattle found Mel’s blood boiling as young as a peewee in 4-H. It was once said, “Glenn could feed’em and Mel could lead’em!” Therefore in the start of the ‘70’s, Royal Angus took to the show road beginning at the first Canadian Western Agribition in 1971 and continued for the next thirty-one years until 2001. They had Heifer Calf Champion the first year with Royal Pride Dolly 17C, a direct daughter of foundation matron Pride Dolly of Deenboro 5L, selected a mere four years prior.

Royal Angus Farm showed the strength and quality of their breeding program during the 2016 show season. Royal S Pride 42B, a daughter of Soo Line Yellowstone 9286 and out of Royal Pride 10X was selected

by Brianna Kimmel, Lloydminster, Alberta in the Black Pearl Sale as a yearling. Royal S Pride 42B was the most successful Angus female in Canada being selected as Grand Champion at Brandon Ag Ex and the Lloydminster Stockade Round-up. She was Grand Champion at the Stockade Round-up Junior Show for two consecutive years and Grand Champion at the Saskatchewan Junior Angus Show for the second consecutive year. She was in the top ten in the Supreme Championship Drives at both Farmfair and Agribition and the Grand Champion First Lady Classic Futurity at Canadian Western Agribition.

The Royal Angus Farm legacy was established because of the sires they produced and supplied to the ranching industry. It’s impossible to account, but it would be interesting to see how many Angus influenced females, sired by Sisson Brothers bulls, run on Western Canadian ranges and paddocks after supplying bulls to the livestock industry since the mid 1960’s. From 1969 through 1994, Mel and Glenn attended and showed bulls at the Regina Bull Sale... that was the place in Saskatchewan to market bulls...all two year olds. During that period, they won Grand Champion Bull five times, Reserve Grand Champion Bull four times, Best Pair of Bulls eight times and the best group of three six times...a record which would be very difficult to duplicate by any breeder.

Mel’s volunteer work actually started by being absent from a meeting, while in hospital for shoulder surgery in 1972. When he got back home and had to take it easy...he happened to be reading the Western Producer and that’s when he discovered he had been elected as a director to the Saskatchewan Angus Association. It was the start of twenty-one and a half years of volunteerism for the Angus Associations. During that time, Mel sat on the Saskatchewan and Canadian boards ending as President for a year and a half...the six months extra was due to annual meeting changes.

Mel was chairman of the Regina Bull Sale committee and chaired the Saskatchewan Cattle Breeders but after twenty-one and a half years, he felt he needed to get his “batteries recharged” but at the Saskatchewan Livestock Convention he was asked to run for the board of Canadian Western Agribition. He was a bit reluctant, but not surprisingly, he was there for six years, three of which were on the executive. During his six year term, his duties were chairman of the beef cattle committee and chairman of the International Business center.

Mel states, “I enjoyed the feeling of satisfaction in helping the breed and the livestock industry I was involved with and if I had not liked it, I would not have been there. I tried to be there for the right reasons, namely to try and help out our breed as opposed to my own ego...I think the outcome of my services was much appreciated.”

Mel and Glenn will quickly tell you that the purebred livestock industry is built on people and integrity. The people sector of the business is the meeting and establishing friendships of breeders worldwide, all with the same goal in mind. Mel’s years of volunteering has broadened his friendships with many other breeders in many breeds. As for integrity, their father Bert instilled in them...“You are not born with integrity and you are not born with credibility, you must build on it every day of your life. Each day you are out there, someone passes judgment on you; you can screw it up in a second, but not live long enough to build it a second time!”

On December 16, 2017, the 103 year legacy of the Sisson family and Royal Angus will disperse in Saskatoon.

We have made many tough decisions, but none have been tougher than the decision to sell our cow herd. Agriculture was bred into us by our father ..... “do a good job taking care of the land and livestock and they will take care of you.” He was right, as we have had a fulfilling life doing what we know best ....breeding Registered Black Angus. But as in any other facet of life, “Father Time” has more control than we do, especially in making these decisions.

This cow herd has been very good to us and we feel confident they will go on to their new homes and do well for their owners. We are exceptionally thrilled that a younger generation of Angus breeders have sourced and very successfully shown cattle selected through our “Black Pearl Sale.” For over five decades, we have met a multitude of commercial cattlemen who believe in the Angus breed and have been great customers .... to them, we will always be grateful, since loyalty to a breeding program is necessary for success.

It has often been said that “the purebred business is a people business” and that is so right. Even though fellow breeders are competitors, they are also friends..... and it was their peer pressure that made us strive to achieve in one of the only free market systems left in agriculture. Thank you family, friends and neighbors.... our success would not have been possible without you all at side.

Saturday, December 16, 2017 will mark another historic day in the Angus breed, as we disperse one of the oldest herds in the Province of Saskatchewan and the nation. Founded in 1953, after sixty-four years of selection and culling, the Royal Angus herd has added value to the livestock industry in North America and off shore. Few breeders can attest to breeding two National Champions in the United Kingdom, the home of the breed.

It would be difficult to document how many Royal bulls have walked the grasslands and woodlands for farmers and ranchers of our nation. As you read through this catalogue, note that many of the bulls sold in the last decade are to repeat customers who have “come to know that bulls raised and produced by the Sisson boys....work and add value!” What is amazing about this program ..... is the fact that this amazing track record has been accomplished by the use of nine cow families .... four large families - Pride, Pride Dolly, Eston Ann and Blackbird who carried the largest share of the work load. With so few cow families, the predictability of the Royal Angus program proved to be an extra degree of success. Mel and Glenn were always on the lookout for new bulls and fresh genetics, whether it was through A.I. or a great walking bull, as their concern was supplying new genetics for their repeat customers.

In the early years, Regina Bull Sale was the prime marketing arena for quality bulls in the Province .....

Royal Angus was a dominant force in both shows and the sale. The females they offered at sales went on to win and contribute for their new owners. When Glenn and Mel founded the “Black Pearl,” I was a part of that first sale which offered both bulls and females. It was named “Black Pearl” because Mel thought of Angus cattle as the pearl.... black and precious. Each sale, one buyer of a female and one buyer of a bull would be awarded a black pearl and this formality has continued through every sale.

Although dispersals always have a note of sadness, with sadness comes opportunity. Consider the fact that you can select from the top of these great cow families, whether you are looking for a proven brood matron or a fancy show prospect that will turn into a front pasture female.

Cowboys, all the herd bulls and bull calves sell... it will be your last chance to acquire a Royal sire. Opportunities are limitless for all types of programs with all types of budgets....plan to acquire a piece of history.

The Royal Pride Cow Family... was established in the early 70’s with the purchase of Ravenmere Pride 5 which evolved into one of the strongest and largest of the cow families.... highly maternal and very predictable. This family produced foundation sires such as Royal Winchester 47T in the early years and Royal New Level 19R whose daughters play a large part to this very day. Of course, Royal S Pride 42B, the dominant show female selected by the Kimmels (Twisted Sisters) from Lloydminster comes from the heart of the family. In addition, we selected another female named Pride from Dusty Daele Angus in Manitoba, DD Pride of WRH 8S, and she formed a family through Royal Pride 11R who sell in lots 1 through to 6. We kept that Pride name for both cow lines so all the Prides are represented in lots 1 through 16.

Terms: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque, Liabilities: All persons attend the sale at their own payable at par at the sale location. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement has been made; no invoicing on buyers in attendance, unless previous arrangements have been made. Every animal sells to the highest bidder and in cases of disputes, the auctioneer’s decision will be final. Current exchange rates will be announced sale day. All monies are in Canadian funds.

Bidding: Each animal will sell to the highest bidder... no by-bidding will be permitted.

Disputes: Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved in dispute. If no further bidding is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision on all disputes will be final.

Announcements: All announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay close attention to such disclosures.

Breeder’s Guarantee: As this is a dispersal sale, all cattle sell with no further guarantee. Any known defects will be announced before the cattle are sold.

Certificate of Registration: Each animal will carry

papers issued by the Canadian Angus Association unless otherwise specified. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer for each animal after payment has been made.
