Welcome to our 2018 “In Pursuit of Perfection’ Bull Sale. It is gratifying to see one’s breeding plans come together and to be able to offer this great group of Bulls. This will be the first sons of our new feature herd bulls “LFE McDavid 413C’ and ‘Springcreek Spark Plug’ and I couldn’t be more proud of them. The ‘McDavid’ sons are very growthy with exceptional hair and style. This sire group is also leading off the Lewis Farms Bull Sale. I admire the consistent look to both his males and females which I feel is the mark of a breeding bull. His 2017 heifer calves averaged 91 lbs at birth with an average gestation of 281.5. His sons were 98 lbs and 284.5 days. The ‘Spark Plug’ calves are also very consistent in type. His sons are hairy, thick and large scrotalled. His heifers and bulls averaged 88 lbs and 92 lbs respectively at birth. Both sexes averaged 285 day gestations. He also puts blaze faces on a majority of his calves. I believe that short gestations are very valuable and we as breeders need to measure and strive to lower. In my experience, you rarely have calving issues with a short gestation. Gestation and a stop watch are better measures of calving ease than birth weight. This is my best set of Black Angus bulls to date. The top end of these bulls would stand with many of the sale toppers across the country. Chris and Ben of T Bar C felt that they were at the top end of the Angus bulls they had seen this year. You will find many of the better AI bulls in their pedigrees. Again we have a nice selection of hybrid “Bestbeef’ bulls. The feedback on these bulls has been very positive. They offer a nice combination of calving ease and performance while maintaining uniformity. The folks at Lazy Creek have again brought a nice selection of Red Angus bulls to fit all your needs. They also have three strong Black Simmental bulls. We appreciate their support. It has been a long process, but I’m pleased to say that all my purebred bulls are finally Homo Polled. It has been a goal of mine for a long time, and one that I believe is important to our industry. All black bulls are also identified for color status. The bulls are in good flesh and condition. This fleshiness has been accomplished on a ration of rolled oats and a protein/ mineral supplement. This is relatively the same ration that I have been using for over forty years. The feedback that I have received over the years has been that my bulls maintain their condition well through the summer and that their longevity has been very good. In Pursuit of Perfection Customer Care Programs IPOP Bull Sale “Live Long Bull Warranty” The goal of this program is again to work with our customers in sharing the risk on bulls that will not work based on factors out of their control. We also want to take more responsibility in seeing a bull through to maturity and ensuring things like feet and legs stand up. A bull purchase is a major investment not just for the future of your herd but in the expectation of a longer productive life of the animal. We also assume there is risk past year one, even though most bulls are only insured in their first year of service. We want to work with our customers through to maturity. The time your bull spends in the Winter Feeding Program will be included in this warranty. If the IPOP Bull Sale “Live Long Bull Warranty” is initiated, it will be paid out in the form of a credit towards the purchase of a bull in the subsequent year’s sale. I am very high on this feature bull called ‘Denali’. His ‘Liner 56U’ dam is a good one and recently sold to Sun Rise Simmentals and Maxwell Simmentals as a feature cow in our recent Female Sale. From day one, this calf has been ‘dead quiet’. He has had young children sitting on his back in the pasture! His big thick bodied dam sold to Silver Lake Simmentals. He has more birth weight, but I watched his birth and it was over in a matter of a few pushes. He came at 283 days. Whoever takes this pet home, will be glad they did! ‘58E’s’ dam sold in our recent sale to Lone Star Simmentals and they are very happy with her new a ‘McDavid’ heifer. This sire prospect is very long bodied as all of his maternal sibs have been. This fall I called Brian to let him know how happy I was with the calves from the ‘Spring Creek’ bulls. Almost half of my bull power are ‘Spring Creek’ bulls. Three hundred steers which were born end of March, April and May were sold the last week of November and averaged 715 pounds. They’re wide topped with big hind ends and ton of depth and hair. “Lots of hair” were comments from other producers and cattle buyers. Our pastures are native grasses and bush with rotational grazing. Here, you need bulls that are free moving, good footed, easy keeping and quiet. The bulls I have from Spring Creek have all that.They work here. I’ve had good luck with many bulls from other breeders.When I’m asked “where’s a good place to buy bulls” I give that producer a list of breeders I have had success with and ‘Spring Creek’ is a name that’s on that list.
