Welcome Hello Everyone, Once in a while you will find that life gives you a kick in the pants (or chest, as in my case) and you will have to rearrange your goals and future plans. It wasn’t an easy decision to sell all our cattle that reside here at Pura Vida, but for the immediate and foreseeable future, I will need to avoid the temptation of looking after cattle and all the physical work that taking care of cattle might entail (ie. building fence, putting out salt or just lifting the tailgate, etc.).

Anyone who knows me, knows I love cattle and especially Speckle Park cattle! Gayle and I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to own, raise, buy and sell purebred Speckle Park cattle over the last 14 years and we are especially proud of the cattle we are offering. We believe we have positively contributed to the genetics in the Speckle Park breed through our selection process. During it all, we have met some amazing producers over the years and we cannot thank the breeders enough who welcomed, mentored and Joe & Gayle Stookey helped us in the early years by leasing us bulls, very good bulls, Box 21, GS 316 RR 3 when our herd size was too small to justify a purchase (you know Saskatoon, SK S7K 3J6 306-229-7499 who you are – thank you). Even in these latter years we recognized joseph.stookey@usask.ca that purchasing a top herd sire required a partnership, thank you www.puravidaacres.com Second Chance Speckle Park and Highmark Speckle Park. With our pooled resources we were in a better position to gain access to some top genetics from the best bulls that we could locate and afford. For example, some of you buyers will get the extra bonus of purchasing a female that may be in calf from River Hill 5C Freedom 805F, a bull we partially own with Carla Ducherer (thank you Carla). All the females were exposed to Freedom from June 24 to July 25, 2019, but with this abbreviated breeding season we cannot guarantee any pregnancies, nor could we preg check with any accuracy with such a short gestation, even if they are bred. We would like to hope you will get a calf from Freedom, but recommend you expose your purchased females for another 30 days breeding if a natural mating suits your plans.

This sale was no different and it created some unique aspects due to the circumstances and speed in which it occurred. his is our welcome and invitation to be a part of the Pura Vida Acres Speckle Park Dispersal.

The sale will be held online on July 25th. We apologize for this being of short notice but health reasons (open heart surgery) has forced the immediate sale of the herd.

The herd name “Pura Vida” stands for “The Pure/Good Life”, a reflection that Joe and Gayle Stookey have enjoyed since 2005 when they chose to raise Speckle Park, since the early beginnings of the breed. Over the past decade plus, Joe and Gayle have built a small, elite herd on the basic idea of “quality rather than quantity,” resulting in a small, high quality Speckle Park herd.

Although dispersals have a note of sadness, they are windows of opportunity, as you can select from the top and the entire herd. As we all know, it is difficult to purchase cow/calf pairs in the Speckle Park breed and we all know what they cost as calves in a sale ring. On July 25th you have the opportunity to sit at your computer and select a part of the Pura Vida program. You will do the Stookey’s a favor, but more importantly, you will do yourself a favor.

That is the mind set I think of when I think of this cow. This cow is a flashback to her dam, Styals Six 16P, who was a cornerstone of our herd, with three of her daughters selling in this sale. Just like her high producing mother, Pura Vida Cordoba 69C consistently weans the heaviest or one of the heaviest calves in the crop. I am guessing her 2019 bull calf, Pura Vida Skip-A-Beat (Lot 5A) will match or exceed his full brother in performance and style.

Her style, frame size and history of producing very good calves makes her an excellent representative of the Speckle Park breed. She is a very good mother cow with a sound udder, good feet and legs that will keep her working in any herd for many years. Not many cows, from any beef breed, can wean a calf over 50% of the cow’s weight. Cordelia did it in 2018 and she will likely do it again in 2019. She milks like a Jersey but her bull calf this year, though unassisted at birth, was just too heavy for our taste to keep for a future bull. However, bred to the right bull, I am confident she can produce future herd sires and certainly good milking females.

Please note that this cow only milks on three quarters.

When this cow was a calf, we would not consider selling her at any price. She is still very attractive and obviously an easy fleshing cow with a very nice udder. Another daughter from Styals Six 16P. We especially liked Barcelona’s 2018 bull (see picture below) and feel Pura Vida Heartthrob 119G (Lot 8A) will be as good or better. He is our only River Hill Dignitary calf and it was an easy decision to keep him intact.

Honestly, the history of selling black Speckle Park bulls has not been great. So, right or wrong, probably wrong, we banded her 2019 bull calf early. However, our decision shouldn’t detract from the fact that this is a very productive and correct female. Bolivia 55B has a well-shaped udder, very good confirmation and she has consistently produced exceptional calves for us. In our minds, she was a candidate for future flushing to a white bull, unfortunately, that dream has hit a hard wall of reality.

In our world, good winter green feed and plenty of summer grass yields fat Speckle Park cattle! We won’t apologize for the fact she is easy fleshing and frankly, we love her thickness, confirmation and her udder. Flushed to a white bull, this cow could be the proverbial “golden goose”. We make a big deal about udder shape, but this cow has not read the manual! Instead she just cranks out one good calf after another and provides them with more milk than two cows could do with average udders. Does that make her a good cow?
