WELCOME TO THE SALE

Welcome to the 25th Annual Prairie Gold Limousin Bull Sale. As we look back over the last 25 years, we are extremely thankful for all our customers who are responsible for the 25 successful years, making it the longest running Limousin bull sale in Canada. It is great to see the positive shift in the cattle industry and the prediction of record prices to be expected in the next couple of years. It is gratifying to know that all the cattlemen who have stuck with the cattle industry will be able to reap the well deserved rewards. Now is a great time to use, or continue to use, thick, heavy muscled, easy calving, Limousin bulls that will get you the heaviest calves come fall. The one thing that hasn’t changed is that calves are still sold by the pound. Now is also a great time to buy from a sale that has withstood 25 years of the cattle industry. We appreciate the confidence you have placed in our sale and if any one of the consignors or sale consultants can be of any assistance, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Here is a thick, stylish, moderate framed heifer bull that has big growth numbers. His dam is a nice made cow with a beautiful udder. A maternal sister was a $4000 high seller last fall to Ken Doc Limousin. One of the few DHVO Deuce sons to sell this year. • Homo Polled Test Pending

Here is a bit younger bull that definitely doesn’t give up any muscle, thickness and performance that the other bulls have. He has been thick and muscular right from birth. He is out of a first calf heifer that won her class at Agribition as a heifer calf. He is the first Responder son to sell in Canada.

Understanding Expected Progeny Differences Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are used to compare the genetic merit of animals in various traits. An EPD predicts the difference in performance of future offspring of a parent, as compared to progeny from other parents, when each are bred to mates of equal value. Remember, the observed performance of an animal is determined by both genetics and environment and EPDs only predict differences due to genes passed on from parent to offspring. Gestation Length (GL) Calculated from breeding and calving date information and expressed in days. Lower GL EPDs indicate shorter gestation lengths of offspring. Calving Ease (CE) Higher calving ease EPDs are favored and indicate genetics for greater chances of unassisted births in first calf heifers. The calving ease direct (CE) EPD is important for choosing which sires to breed to first-calf heifers to produce calves that are born easily. Birth Weights (BW) Birth weight has been identified as the single most influential factor contributing to calving difficulty. In studies of birth weight data, birth weight EPDs have been shown to be the single most accurate genetic predictor of calf birth weight. BW is expressed in pounds of calf at birth and a lower number is desirable. Weaning Weights (WW) and Yearling Weight (YW) EPDs are expressed as the added pounds of weaning and yearling weight of offspring. Milking Ability (MA) A sire’s milk EPD is expressed as the additional pounds of weaning weight of calves from daughters (grand-progeny of sire), due to genes for milk passed on from the sire to his daughters. Similarly, a dam’s milk EPD indicates added pounds of weaning weight of calves from her daughters (grand-progeny of dam), due to genes for milk the daughters inherited from the dam. Scrotal Circumference (SC) Scrotal Circumference has been found to be a good indicator of age at puberty, and is a highly heritable trait. Expressed in centimeters with higher values indicating larger yearling scrotal circumference of sons. Spring 2011 Calf Breed Averages GL: -0.9 CE: 7.7 BW: 1.8 WW: 42.9 YW: 80.2 Milk: 20.9 SC: 0.4
