Welcome to our 26th annual Prairie Gold Limousin Bull sale. We would like to first thank everybody for making our last year’s 25th sale a huge success, one of our best ever. The future has never looked brighter for the beef industry and the commercial cattleman, with low beef numbers the outlook is very positive for prices to remain strong for many years. What a great time for the cattle business and the Limousin breed. The Limousin breed has so much to offer, maternal traits, performance and muscle to industry leading carcass traits. All of this positioning you to capitalize the most in these great times. This year we have another outstanding set of bulls with some of the best pedigrees in North America. There will be brothers to this year’s Agribition champion Ken Doc Loverboy as well as brothers to to this year’s supreme champion bull of all breeds at the Saskatoon Fall Fair, Stoneyview Xceed. There will also be direct sons from the 2011 Denver champion and triple crown winner MAGSWLR Usual Suspect. This guy could turn the head of the dead. He’s got all the style one could want, excellent structure, extremely quiet, when you get behind him he is the stoutest thickest bull you could find. Unique pedigree,one of only WLR Direct Hits in Canada. A maternal brother was a high light in last year’s sale. To top it all off he could add hair to a Holstein, when I went to clip this bull for pictures I couldn’t even begin to comb him, his hair was so thick and dense.A bull that is a must see in person. Understanding Expected Progeny Differences Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are used to compare the genetic merit of animals in various traits. An EPD predicts the difference in performance of future offspring of a parent, as compared to progeny from other parents, when each are bred to mates of equal value. Remember, the observed performance of an animal is determined by both genetics and environment and EPDs only predict differences due to genes passed on from parent to offspring. Gestation Length (GL) Calculated from breeding and calving date information and expressed in days. Lower GL EPDs indicate shorter gestation lengths of offspring. Calving Ease (CE) Higher calving ease EPDs are favored and indicate genetics for greater chances of unassisted births in first calf heifers. The calving ease direct (CE) EPD is important for choosing which sires to breed to first-calf heifers to produce calves that are born easily. BirthWeights (BW) Birth weight has been identified as the single most influential factor contributing to calving difficulty. In studies of birth weight data, birth weight EPDs have been shown to be the single most accurate genetic predictor of calf birth weight. BWis expressed in pounds of calf at birth and a lower number is desirable. WeaningWeights (WW) and YearlingWeight (YW) EPDs are expressed as the added pounds of weaning and yearling weight of offspring. Milking Ability (MA) A sire’s milk EPD is expressed as the additional pounds of weaning weight of calves from daughters (grand-progeny of sire), due to genes for milk passed on from the sire to his daughters. Similarly, a dam’s milk EPD indicates added pounds of weaning weight of calves from her daughters (grand-progeny of dam), due to genes for milk the daughters inherited from the dam. Scrotal Circumference (SC) Scrotal Circumference has been found to be a good indicator of age at puberty, and is a highly heritable trait. Expressed in centimeters with higher values indicating larger yearling scrotal circumference of sons.
