FROM THE DESKS AT T BAR… It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2012 edition of the “Pacesetter Sale” hosted by the Alberta Limousin Association. We are in exciting times in the agriculture business in Canada; in the past it was believed that only one sector of agribusiness could flourish at a time and it was at the expense of another. This is no longer so, both the grain producers and the beef producers are simultaneously experienc ing positive returns and the best is yet to come. For cattlemen the world’s head count of beef cows is at a low level not seen in many decades and the human population has never been so high. Supply will not keep pace with demand and you cannot boost cow inventories in one year with a bumper crop. The Limousin breed is in a great position to expand, as the easiest way to increase production is to get more pounds of beef from the cows that are already in production. As North America’s cow herd is primarily British based, the introduction of a Limousin bull will give the cow/calf producer more pounds at weaning, the feedlot more pounds leaving his gate and the one with the most control, the packer more pounds hanging on the rail and less trim on the floor. Now is the time to ad both inventory and new genetics to your program, to better position yourself for the upcoming boom years in the cattle business. I’m extremely proud of the offering we have assembled for this sale; we have three herd sire prospects that each offer a little different genetic package and type, but all will prove to be breed advancers. The three mature females are also exciting, each has proven her production, two are crowned champions and all need to be added to donor programs. The bred heifers are stout, easy fleshing females, from proven cow families, that will prove to be a good investment at any level through their long productive lives. For all you juniors and those of you who are just a kid at heart, study the heifer calves, many have the potential to be champions and they all will be great cows in the future. Come to Olds for the weekend, Highland’s event kicks it off Friday night; the Alberta Association AGM starts off Saturday. New this year is “The Last Man Standing,” a fun event that is judged by you. Limolyn Zoltan is perhaps the best bull calf ever raised at Combest Limousin. A stand out from birth with his dark hair coat and super disposition. He is out of Greenwood Pld Xtra Charge, who we purchased a semen package from. Zoltan has plenty of bone, walks exceptionally well and carries plenty of muscle. His dam has produced herd sires in the past and is out of a Denver Carload purchase from Carrousel Farms, with a bit of an outcross pedigree.

Here is a combination we are really proud of: a super broody female out of a nice and moderate dam, with ROMN Tuff Enuff on the top to tie it all together. This heifer is out of a cow that has consistently out-done herself with her progeny time and time again. A 75 lb. birth weight and a 626 lb. adjusted weaning weight, out of our most moderately-framed cow, shows you the bred-in efficiency and productivity this girl has. Her dam is super deep, moderate, and has an udder we would like to have on all of our cows: tight, neat, longlived and obviously productive. Zambuca is a fancy, dark red heifer calf with lots of thickness and length of body. Her sire, RPY Paynes Elvis, was a standout in the show ring a couple of years ago and he has now made a mark on our 2012 calf crop, siring the calves who are at the top of the herd. Zambuca is no exception. With her good looks and strong performance, she will make an excellent show prospect or replacement female.

Zaphrodite is the pick of our 2012 heifer calves, which says a lot coming out of a dam who is a first calf heifer. She is stylish, long bodied and displays a lot of shape. This girl is stamped from head to toe with maternal qualities - she is the next in line in a cow family that has been such consistent producers, they now make up 25% of our purebred herd. This heifer is the first calf out of Murphy’s 4X, and what a way to start! We really like this heifer for all the depth she’s got, the trimness and femininity she shows throughout, and we just know you’ll like her for those reasons and more, too. Another of our ROMN Tuff Enuff calves, Zanadu shows a lot of productivity in her phenotype, and even more in her genotype: a nice, small 67 lb. birth weight, a milk EPD above breed average, and some really attractive docility numbers tie in very nicely with her appearance, and make her a very attractive addition to your herd.

Here is a super showy little heifer calf, perfect for a junior project or some summer shows! She combines some really great traits into a nice, trim, feminine package that is sure to please the eye as she matures. Her dam is a super long bodied, sound structured cow from Carroussel’s Pure Power, and was a very competitive female for Cameron throughout her show career. Definitely look at the longevity this little heifer has in her structure; sure she’ll be a great show prospect, but she’ll retire to make an excellent and productive addition to any program.

The apple didn’t fall far from the tree. Sired by Empire Polled Trooper and back to Excel Polled Jolt on the dam’s side, bulls that have left us some of our best cows. This heifer weaned off at 740 lbs, and she has been a standout from a calf. She’s bred to Murphys 10X, a ROMN Tow Truck 111T son, who goes back to Ivy’s Revolution and Landmark on the bottom side. PE to Murphy’s 10X from June 4 to Aug. 31. Observed bred June 7. Preg checked safe to calve March 23, 2013.

Excel One Way was selected out of our pen of 40 bred heifers and it is easy to see why. She has a lot of depth, is clean fronted, and wide topped.
