We always look forward to talking about cattle and the business of producing beef as efficiently and profitably as possible. There are many varied methods and philosophies as to how to best achieve this. The one consistent thing we have found is that at the heart of every operation is a love of cows and family.

We are always thankful to our customers for giving our program a chance to work for them and for coming back year after year with solid support. 90% of our buyers are repeat customers and we truly believe this to be one of our biggest successes. About our Program

n years like this when feed reserves are marginal, more then ever we recognize the importance of knowing there is a positive return for every dollar spent. At MJT we make every effort to ensure that there is value in your bull buying dollar, be it through our bull development program which ensures the most longevity possible, or our consistent emphasis on sensible birth weights to ensure live calves, minimal labour and high breed back percentages.

Our cattle are raised with the basics in mind with a primary focus on the needs of the commercial cattleman. Basics are what have made the Hereford and Angus breeds attractive for generations. We feel our commitment to this should help you, the rancher, produce predictable and profitable cattle using MJT genetics. We feel that having kept the basics of the cattle business at the forefront of our program is what has built both our herd and reputation. We won’t compromise our principals to chase trends or for short term gain in our own pockets. We believe the most economically important traits for the cow/calf producer are still all about the fundamentals...fertility, longevity, structure, soundness, and fleshing ability.

MJT isn’t in this for the short haul. We have been in the “Bull Business” for four generations and this is our 25th sale at home. The philosophy has evolved over the years and we feel that the cattle are continuing to improve and are now more consistent than ever.

We believe good cattle can sell themselves and we try to offer a good selection of bulls that are affordable to the needs and budget of every rancher. We run the cow herd and the bulls like a commercial outfit, testing the do-ability, winter hardiness, fertility, udder quality and longevity under real world conditions. We know our cows can wean a respectable calf crop under almost any conditions.

We strive for low input management, and our cow herd has proven it can graze nearly year round. In 2018, the mature Spring calving cow herd was fed mechanically for only 10 days. It has been our goal for a few years to only feed for a short period at calving and this year we were able to achieve something we only thought to be impossible 10 years ago.

MJT bulls are developed gently with their futures in mind. We expect that the bull you buy looks better on sale day than in the photo in the catalog and that he will look better the day we deliver him than the day you bought him. We just see this as normal development and will not overfeed to get them fat for the sale. We want you to be able to see what each animal has to offer under his hide, so you can pick the best fit for your cow herd. Gradual development in large pastures and big pen sizes ensures mobility, athleticism, and skeletal strength. All bulls are coming Two Year Olds; bulls that can cover more ground, breed more cows and maintain their stature better than a yearling bull.

Bulls are fed with their futures in mind!

Bulls are on pasture for summer and fall grazing.

In winter bulls are fed haylage, a light whole oat ration and corn silage.

We don’t use processed grain and protein supplement for sale animals.

All bulls must pass a breeding and soundness evaluation.

We consciously make low use of AI breeding. Selecting a new herd bull is an intense process. We make many miles and believe that the homework on the dam, the related offspring and the actual bull himself are critical. The investment in genetics with this method is a few orders of magnitude greater that AI’ing. As we investigate and analyze each new breeding piece that we add we also find ourselves more and more looking back at our own yearling pen and cowherd to move our program forward. For 25 years we have selected for consistent birthweights, and focused on soundness and foot structure. We truly believe the females are the pillars of a herd, and our main focus is always building better females. Moving our main group to late spring calving has pushed us even further in our focus on udder quality.

So why not just AI? When we buy a live bull and walk him with our cows we get to see all the other traits that don’t show up on a photo or a stat sheet. This allows us to be the first to know if any problems arise and allows us to cull accordingly. We hear much concern with foot and leg structure in todays cattle. As far as we can tell, the surest way to verify long term structure and breeding soundness is to walk our dams and sires and be very critical of anything that might develop. As a result, 0% of MJT sale bulls have had their feet trimmed.

On sale day the pens will be nicely bedded but we always leave some open ground so that you can assess our emphasis on foot quality for yourself.

We don’t raise show cattle, we show cattle we raise. We have often debated about the merits of showing cattle. We worry that there are times in the industry where it becomes tempting to compromise on the fundamentals in favor of competition. However, there are also many benefits it affords. First and foremost, it helps develop our kids. The learning and opportunities that our industry provides agricultural youth in the show environment is second to none. The relationships that the kids make will last far longer than any ribbons they win. We have discovered that the enthusiasm of the younger generations can take you further than you ever thought possible. Secondly, for our own development. When we get to the shows, it’s a community unlike any other….graced with so many competitive yet thoughtful, caring, strong, fun and hardworking people. The exchange of ideas about what works and what doesn’t can’t help but make everyone involved a better stockman. Thirdly, it allows us a great opportunity to assess multiple genetics in an efficient manner. Kurt and Mick spend a lot of time through the barns looking for both positive and negative patterns in progeny, to assist us with our own genetic selection. Last, but not least, the cattle we show are cattle from our program and getting them in show condition allows us to demonstrate the results our customers can expect from our genetics when fed on a higher plane of nutrition.

It re-enforces our confidence that our genetics have enough muscle, depth of body and quality to remain relevent in todays cattle industry. We hear from many customers, that show cattle don’t work for them. We have made a commitment to showcase the genetics we raise for our commercial buyers, and will not compromise on our fundamentals.

Payment Options

We recognize it has been a challenging year. Please call Mick or Kurt if you would like to make alternate payment arrangements. Our traditional payment plan is; 1/3 down on sale day and a post dated cheque for July 1st, 2019.

US Shipments

We will arrange all health testing and export papers required for shipment. Payment for export cattle must be 50% prior to testing, and the balance will be due prior to shipping. MJT will assist in arrangements for the cattle to be shipped to central points in the US. Cost is the responsibility of the buyer.

Lincoln offspring are well marked, fully pigmented and have beautiful hair coats.

His sons are heavy muscled and the daughters are feminine, fancy and perfect uddered. They have the capacity and rib that make them super mama cows! His progeny have done very well in the show ring and in the pasture for us. Lincoln is no stranger to the show ring himself. He was the Farmfair International Grand Champion Hereford bull in both 2013 and 2014. Mick judged him at Farmfair in 2013 and purchased him out of the stall from Flewellings right after. His daughters have done well for us in both in the pasture as well as the showring. MJT 495Y Cindy 105C was Champion Horned Hereford Female at Lloydminster Stockade Roundup in 2016 as a bred heifer, and again in 2017 with her calf at side. She was also Champion Senior Female at Canadian Western Agribition.

This good rascal is out of a heifer we like alot. She did a whale of a job on him as her first calf. He has a thick muscle pattern, good bone, and lots of hair, pigment on both eyes, and a red scrotum. His dam is quiet and was shown at Summer Synergy when Ryan was 7 in the peewee show, and his disposition follows suit.

Mick found First Impression as a calf in 2015 at the Denver National Stock Show.

He was a mid-April calf and at 9 months old, his natural muscling and early maturity were impressive. Seeing his mother sealed the deal for us! This pedigree is newer to Canada. First Impression’s sire – Dameron First Impression – was the 2012 Denver Grand Champion Angus Bull. His progeny have been dominating shows across North America. This is another Touchdown 20X son we kept for our own use. His dam is from a strong cow family going back to the first herd bull we ever owned, “Big Sky 610F.” The Touchdown 20X bull stamped his progeny with style, shape and correctness.

He sired the 2018 Reserve Champion Mature Bull of Farmfair and Agribition, MJT Frontier 121D. 121 had a 74 pound birthweight and an average daily gain of 3.7 pounds, providing a great example that the progeny of 467Z are easy calving, good footed, solid structured, without comprimising performance. We feed our bulls very moderately with thier futures in mind but feel that 121D is a great example of how our genetics can perform when fed on a higher plane of nutrition.

When we lost our 20/20 Touchdown 20X herd sire, we picked 505Z to replace him. 505Z follows the pattern we admire of 20X! That round muscle, good feet and soundness were qualities of the old bull. 505Z’s mama is out of a top cow family that never misses. Longevity, excellent milk and sound feet and leg structure. 505Z travels well. He is athletic and breeds consistent birth weights. A 76 pound birth weight and a short gestation topped up with high performance has made him a valuable sire in the MJT Herd Bull Battery. After the 2016 heifers calved, Kurts favorite was a 505 daughter with a perfect udder. 505 was injured in 2017, and these will be the last sons available.

We bought Improvement as a yearling sight unseen, based on his dam and Owen’s confidence in the calf. On delivery, we liked him when he walked off the trailer. We have used him on heifers successfully and the offspring are comparable to the mature cows’ calves at weaning. His grandsire, HF Tiger 5T is appreciated for early gestation and calving ease. He is also designated as an Elite Sire in the CAA. Tiger 5T had many championships awarded to him in the show ring.

Simmental Bull

hen the grandsons started expressing an interest in raising a few Simmental’s, Grandpa Mick was surprisingly open to the idea.

His only condition was that the kids followed the same standards that he has stood by in his Angus and Hereford herds. It has been a great learning process as he worked through selections with Matthew, begining nearly 3 years ago now. He has worked to instil in the boys the understanding that the pillar of a breeding program is in the females, with a primary focus on soundness and structure, while striving for the performance that our commercial cattleman needs. They decided that looking to Garth and Angela Ranciers herd was a great foundation starter, and purchased a group of embryo’s from them in the March Madness sale in 2016. They have since added another select few Simmental’s to the program, and will be keeping a flushmate to the bull on offer. Matthew and Mick recently purchased Boss Lake Miss Crocus from Boss Lake Genetics, and Casey and Ryan recently purchased another Simmental heifer from GreenValley Farms. If nothing else, we can assure you one thing, the boys have all learned from the experience, right down to Casey crawling under the heifer prospects and measuring the finger widths between teats! They take thier venture seriously, and we are very proud to offer the first MJT Simmental.

e are offering 6 heifers right off the top of the replacement pen that we had our eye on as potential donors. All that’s been held back are the boys two 4-H projects that were selected this summer and at this stage by no means are they showing more quality than what is on offer. It is really hard to let these one’s go as they are bred to be great cows, but in order to build a female market we need to offer the good ones that we are confident will go on to excel for others. We understand that with the hype of the fall heifer sales over, the market at this time of year for heifers is not going to be as strong as in Nov/Dec. However, those extra few months help us ensure that the heifers that we have on offer can be developed a bit more slowly, with thier longevity in mind. A Fall Review ~ A Moms Perspective

We started out the year with the conversation that perhaps

we should take the year off showing. Us adults at MJT have sometimes questioned if the shows can quickly become a feeding competition that can tempt an otherwise diligent stockman to overlook some of the fundamentals. We have built both our program and our reputation on these fundamentals, structure and soundness, fertility, longevity, and the ability to lay muscle to bone on a conservative diet. However, the boy’s enthusiasm has been a motivator for continuing to show. The learning opportunities are priceless. We have tried to instill in the boys that you don’t change your program to follow the trends or the banners. You stick to your fundamentals and build cattle you can have confidence in.

This is Matthews Grade 12 year, and with his educational goals, we thought it would be best that he should take the 2018 fall off showing to concentrate on his studies. After all, we had a great 2017, and thought it was unlikely we could top it.

However, Matthew had a vision, a goal, and a big ‘what if’ for his bull, MLL 10Y Rocky 225D. The love and energy they have together is a once in a lifetime bond. An ET calf out of a home raised foundation dam, Rocky has an ability to lay muscle to bone, he is sound, and he has a good solid foot all on a moderate frame.

There was no way that Matthew was not taking his bull out this show season. He was in Grade 12, and Rocky was in his last eligible year, and Matthew wanted to kick the year out together, trying their best. After much contemplation, as parents, we decided if our 17 year old wanted to spend his spare time getting up at 4 am to head to the barns for a month, we better do the best we could to support it.

My mom had always told me that if you were going to do anything, you do your very best; you don’t ever step on anyone on the way up; and you get farther by pulling those around you up then you ever will by stepping over them. She instilled in us that if you live your life like that, then anything is possible. We have told our kids that, and to be honest, when Kurt and I were running out of steam and ready to rein in a little bit - Matt called us on it. So - All in, team effort, and aim high.

We were fortunate to be able to enlist a great crew to help get the fall rolling and the animals ready. Still, as adults, our goals and expectations were reasonable (we thought). We were after all taking a Hereford and a big black bull out that wasn’t super showy, but represented our program well with his homegrown sire and dam. Those two and a couple of calves. We were exited about them, and the goal was for them to make friends with some customers. As for the banners, we knew the competition was pretty stiff.

Olds Fall Classic kicked off the season with Champion Hereford Bull and Reserve Intermediate Heifer Calf.

What an amazing start to the fall! Our big black bull 121D made quite a few friends, and again we affirmed that although he wasn’t going to be a banner chaser, we were proud of him, so he was going to come along the rest of the season. Then came Lloydminster Exhibition Stockade Roundup, a great show, and Rocky not only won his show, but made top 5! It was an amazing night!

Farmfair was unbelievable. We had a great Angus show. Our big home grown black bull stood second to the International bull in the Senior Bulls, and in a moment we won’t soon forget, our bull calf was selected as Reserve Grand Champion Bull by Shane Kauffman, who later purchased a half interest in the calf. In the Supreme, Rocky and Matthew made top 10. To stand with our Bull among all those people that he looks up to, was a moment that he will cherish forever. The energy and support of everyone that got him there was amazing.

Agribition; There are no words, but I will try. We were feeling run down, everyone was sick, and I was certain I had pneumonia. Frankly, we were ready to pull the plug. We all had to dig pretty deep to get rolling. Matthew was hanging on to a goal to round out his final year with him and Rocky both doing the absolute best they could. That meant, unless someone croaked, we were headed out the door.

Matthew and Mick were honored to judge the National Gelbvieh show. Although Mick knew it meant he would miss his own show day, to have that experience together was worth it.

We had an amazing Angus show, Champion Senior Bull Calf with MJT Impressive 813F, and Reserve Mature Bull with MJT Frontier 121D, a bull that we took out to represent our program, not even thinking we would be in the hunt for a banner. We truly appreciate all the great cattle that he stood beside that day, and are humbled by his selection by Murray Andrews. The following day we headed into the Hereford show, hopeful, but tentative. It was a strong showing of Hereford Cattle To be selected by Lafrentz’s as Champion Polled Hereford Bull, was again humbling.

My heart was absolutely bursting. To see Matthews dream of winning a Grand Championship at CWA with Rocky come true after all the perseverance and hard work was amazing. To top it off, that made Rocky a 5 time lifetime qualifier for the RBC Supreme at CWA. To then be selected by an esteemed panel of judges in the Supreme for the top 10, was a moment we will never forget.

I absolutely love our show family and crew. In my opinion, they are the best there is. A group of friends that works together as a team, who have grown together these past years by building each other up and having each others backs. Mostly kids, who put their whole heart in to what they are doing. They are not fall staff, they are family. We know there is no way we could do this without them. My favorite part, is watching the show kids grow together, help each other, and pull each other along as they reach new levels. That has more value than any banner or buckle we will ever bring home. And truly, if you dug down to the heart of it, that is why this mom of three farmers hangs out for a few months of my year in a cattle barn.

Matthew for having faith in your bulls, and the stubbornness to push us to stick with it. Jess Verstappen for all that you did daily to help have those critters ready before and at the show. Your passion for cattle will serve this industry well. Kyle Dodgson for being Matthew’s wing man and the best Plan B we could have. You have amazing talent that will take you places. Michael Commandeur, you were a key part in getting this all rolling last year. Paige Thompson and Jaymie Thompson for your wicked legs and tail balls, humor, and wit that make us laugh! Terms Payment Options: 1/3 down on sale day and a post-dated cheque for July 1, 2019. See Mick for other arrangements.

Insurance Insurance will be available on sale day and we ask that all cattle left be fully insured.

Disputes In cases of dispute, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final.

Purchaser’s risk Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold.

Liability MJT and staff accept no liability on sale day for accidents. However, all precautions will be taken to ensure safety.

Health All animals will be sold in compliance with the health laws of Alberta. All sale bulls have been treated with Ivomec. All bulls are vet inspected.

Breeding Guarantee All bulls are guaranteed breeders. The Standard Canadian Hereford and Canadian Angus Association guarantee applies. All bulls are semen tested and vet inspected. Under no circumstances shall MJT be responsible for more than the purchase price paid for the said animal.

Announcements Any announcements from the stand take priority over catalogued material.

MJT has the right to collect semen at their expense and the owners convenience on any bull sold, for thier own use in-herd.
