Steer Catalogue

Welcome to our 4-H Club Steer Sale catalogue! This year, the Meskanaw-Ethelton 4-H beef club is celebrating 72 years as a club! How exciting! Our members are very excited to show you their 4-H steers in this catalogue. This year, I got the opportunity to work with T Bar C to design this catalogue. On behalf of our club, I want to send a huge THANK YOU to T Bar C for all their help with this catalogue. It was a great opportunity to “Learn to do by doing”. I also want to thank Decisive Farming by TELUS Agriculture for their sponsorship that made this catalogue possible! I designed this book with our steer buyers and 4-H members in mind. I wanted each member to showcase all of the hard work that they put into their 4-H projects. I also wanted to highlight all the activities that we do as a club and how the 4-H program benefits the youth involved. As for our steer buyers, I wanted to provide an opportunity for you to get to know our members through this catalogue. I, along with every member in our club, believe it is so important for 4-H supporters to learn what goes on within the 4-H program and all the hard work our members put in. For your convenience, I have included the projected cost of purchasing a 4-H steer and the projected cost of buying beef in the local grocery store. This is done to help you compare the prices. You will see that supporting a 4-H member is a great option! As you flip through this catalogue, I hope that you will learn something new about the 4-H program, get to know our members and consider purchasing a steer at the Melfort Regional Show & Sale of 2026! Thank you for your support of the 4-H program!

On behalf of the families in the Meskanaw Ethelton 4H Beef Club, I’d like to welcome you to our 4H Steer SaIe Catalogue. It has been exciting to watch our members come together this year to create two projects that our club has never done before: a sponsorship video, which can be viewed by scanning the QR code on the sponsorship page of this catalogue, and this very first steer sale catalogue.
Both projects were member-driven, and it was great to see their personalities, creativity, and skills come to life throughout the process. These two projects gave our members the opportunity to develop valuable skills in marketing, written and verbal communication, teamwork, and creativity, while also strengthening their judging skills through writing footnotes for their steers.
Within these pages, you will meet the members of the Meskanaw Ethelton 4-H Beef Club. Through the 4-H program, these young people are developing skills that will help shape capable, hardworking adults who know how to get the job done. They are learning time management, communication, leadership, work ethic, public speaking, confidence, and the importance of helping others and giving back to their communities.

Over my 11 years of involvement with this club as a parent, and the past four years as a Cloverbud Leader, I have watched members step outside of their comfort zone and rise to new challenges. Whether it is leading a 1500 pound steer into the show ring, public speaking, leading a club meeting or activity, or supporting each other in decision making, these members continue to grow in confidence and character.
I would like to thank Anna for gathering all the information for this catalogue, and to all the members for meeting deadlines and putting so much effort into their pages. Thank you as well to T Bar C for helping design and assemble this catalogue, and to Decisive Farming by TELUS Agriculture for generously coming on board as a catalogue sponsor.
Finally, thank you to all our Steer Buyers and Achievement Day Sponsors who continue to support our members year after year. Your support provides our members with opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed, and it is truly appreciated. We hope you enjoy getting to know our members through this catalogue. If you have any questions about the steers or the sale please reach out to any of our members and their families. Please plan to join us at the Melfort Regional 4H Steer Sale on Monday, July 6. There will be a BBQ Supper for buyers starting at 4:00 pm. Please take this opportunity to have supper and walk through the barns to meet our members before the sale starts at 5:00. We look forward to seeing you there!
Sincerely,
Kristin Wielgosz - Cloverbud leader

CLUB ACTIVITIES This Year’s

4-H LEADERS Meet Our

Lisa Shymr
LISA SHMYR, GENERAL LEADER
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A 4-H LEADER?
I was a 4-H member with our club from the time I was 8 until I aged out at 21 because I enjoyed the program and the people and families within it. Becoming a leader lets me give back to the next generation of ag- minded youth who enjoy the same things that I do!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF BEING A 4-H
LEADER?
I love seeing the growth in our members’ skills from year to year. Whether it’s improving on their speaking skills, or learning different methods of finishing their steers, or fine tuning their fitting skills, it’s very rewarding to watch them choose their focus, and push themselves to learn and improve by doing the work themselves.
HOW DOES PURCHASING A 4-H STEER AT THE MELFORT REGIONAL SHOW & SALE
BENEFIT OUR CLUB MEMBERS?
Our buyer support is so important to our club and members. Our members use their steer sale money to purchase next year’s project, build their own herd, or put it away for post secondary schooling. The process itself teaches members about the real world skills of raising an animal, tracking costs, marketing, finding buyers and the feeling of selling their “calf crop”, only to start again the next year!
Carmen Elliot

CARMEN ELLIOT, ASSISTANT GENERAL LEADER
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A 4-H LEADER?
I was a 4-H member for 10 years in the Saskatoon 4-H Beef Club. 4-H provided me with endless opportunities growing up and 4-H shaped the person I am today. Looking back, I had many 4-H leaders and mentors who I looked up to, highly respected, who have become an integral part of my life and who dedicated years of service to the 4-H program. My fondest memories, achievements and life lessons occurred at 4-H events or cattle shows as a youth. I have a strong passion for 4-H and giving back to the community. As a leader, I want 4-H members to experience various activities, events and guest speakers to learn and gain skills from others. Being a great leader is not about knowing everything, it is about connecting 4-H members to experts by providing opportunities to assist their experience and learning alongside them. As a 4-H member, there are endless opportunities and I will often say “the more effort you put into 4-H, the more you will get out of it.” 4-H has a long-standing history of shaping youth to be hard working, respectful, dedicated and genuine individuals in society. The future of our community relies on our youth today, but they require support and guidance by leaders to be successful.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING A 4-H LEADER?
As a leader, I enjoy watching 4-H members grow, learn responsibility, develop discipline and gain confidence every year. Every milestone reached by our 4-H members is a reminder of the significance of this program and the impact it has on our youth. I celebrate every victory alongside them whether it’s being brave enough to speak up at a meeting or their animal being slapped champion at the regional show. By being a leader for several years, I have had the opportunity to watch members grow to be mature and strong mentors to younger members.
HOW DOES PURCHASING A 4-H STEER AT THE MELFORT REGIONAL SHOW SALE BENEFIT OUR CLUB MEMBERS?
By purchasing a steer, you are supporting local 4-H youth and the future in agriculture. 4-H steers are hand-fed by local 4-H members in low stress environments. Every member who sells a 4-H steer spends many hours feeding, bedding, washing, halter breaking and preparing the steer for the show. A 4-H steer is selected in the fall therefore, each member has dedicated their time and effort to that animal until sale day which takes huge responsibly and devotion to provide full care to their steer.

BUYING A STEER The Process of
HOW: To Bid on the steer, all you do is hold your hand up every time you want to raise the bid; the auctioneer will take it from there. Bidding is done in dollar/pound increments. When the auctioneer says “SOLD” and if you are the last bidder, you are the proud owner of the 4-H steer. If you do not attend the sale in person you have the option of bidding online via dlms.ca.
WHAT: I bought the steer, what do I do now? Now you own the steer, and no you do not have to tie the steer to the bumper of your car or lead it home and put it in your backyard. The only thing you are required to do is indicate at the sale if you:
A) Want us to resell the steer to the packer. If you resell your steer, you only pay the difference between what you bought the steer for and what he was resold for at the packer. If you choose this option say, “Send him on the truck!”
B) Want to have the steer cut and wrapped for your deepfreeze. If you choose this option, you must make arrangements with the club member to transport the steer to an abattoir. In this case, you would also be responsible for paying the cutting and wrapping charges at the meat shop. If you choose this option say, “Send him back to the barn!”
MEAT BREAKDOWN: Under each steers photo, you will see that we have included their estimated sale day weight and estimated carcass weight. This was provided so you have an idea of how much beef you will end up with.
*All animals are different and will have a different yield depending on a number of factors including shrink, genetics, finishing, cuts, etc, so prices and amounts will vary.*
Here is a breakdown of what it would cost to purchase a 1300lb 4-H steer. With a 820lb carcass weight.
Take Home Meat: 575lbs
Ground Beef & Stew Meat: 315lbs
Steak and Roasts: 260lbs
STORE PRICE:
Ground Beef & Stew Meat: $12/lb
Steak and Roast: $25/lb
TOTAL PRICE TO BUY A MARKET STEER IN STORE: $10,280.00
Price of a steer at local 4-H sale - $4.25/lb X 1300 lbs = $5,525.00
Price to have animal butchered, cut and wrapped = $1,000.00
TOTAL COST OF LOCAL 4-H STEER= $6,525.00
For $3755.00 less than at a grocery store you can support a local 4-H member, a local butcher and know where your food is raised and came from.

TESLYN KAJNER & MOOSE
AGE: 13 // AGE GROUP: INTERMEDIATE // PARENTS: COREY KAJNER & CARMEN ELLIOT YEARS IN 4-H: 8 // PROJECT: HEIFER AND MARKET STEER

What is your favourite project? Why? My favorite project is my heifer, Stella because she was born on our farm and is out of a really good cow my older brother showed in 4-H a few years ago.
What will you put your steer money towards? My steer cheque will pay for my 4-H steer next year and the rest of the money will go into my college fund. I am also saving money to purchase a truck in a few years.
Activities outside of 4-H: Outside of 4-H, I participate in dance and volleyball. I also enjoy attending various cattle shows in the spring and summer with my family and friends.
Why should you buy my steer? Moose is a thick steer with a lot of natural muscling and overall mass. Moose has a wide topline to provide you with an abundance of top-cut quality meat. Moose will fill your freezer with tender and flavorful beef, just in time for BBQ season. By purchasing my 4-H steer, you are supporting youth in our community, local butchers and the future in agriculture. When purchasing a steer as a business, you are promoting your business and feeding your family, friends or employees with great tasting beef!

If you are looking for quality beef, Rusty is the steer for you. Don’t let his name fool you, Rusty will have juicy and flavorful meat for you to enjoy. Rusty’s dad is a purebred Simmental bull, LLW Card True North G71 and his mom, Hailstorm is a commercial Charolais cow. I named my steer Rusty as he was born with a small rust colored birthmark on his side. Rusty is a light grey steer with a white face, but it is hard to tell he has a white face unless you look really close. I’D LIKE TO THANK GATEWAY VET SERVICES AND HEAVIN SEEDS FOR PURCHASING MY 4-H STEER IN 2025. OUR FAMILY HAS BUTCHER SPOTS BOOKED, IF NEEDED.

His dad was an embryo calf who has brought alot to our herd. He is well made, straight topped, and very easy fleshing. He is gentle, calm, and always comes as soon as he sees you. ASHYA SIERMACHESKY & BUFFALO

YEARS IN 4-H: 9 IN BEEF, 2 IN LIGHT HORSE // PROJECT: MARKET STEER

What is your favourite project? Why? Light horse was my favorite project, as it helped me build my riding skills while enjoying trail rides, drill team, and connecting with others who share my passion. In beef 4-H, I love working with my market steer. They are typically less temperamental than females, and they offer valuable learning opportunities in feeding, carcass cuts, and the economics of beef production; all areas I am especially interested in. What will you put your steer money towards? My steer money is going towards my post secondary schooling, which I start in the fall at U of S for a degree in Agriculture. My long term goal is to be a large animal, mobile veterinarian which has been my dream since I was five.
Activities outside of 4-H: I do track and field through school, ride my horses and work various jobs. In my free time I volunteer at the Melfort Mohawk Animal Clinic. I love being outdoors, especially in the wide open spaces of rural Saskatchewan.
Why should you buy my steer? I enjoy working with my steer every year and having to pursue the goal of getting him finished, halter broke, and completely ready for show day. The money is always a second thought around my cattle. That being said, I would really appreciate your financial support in achieving post secondary education, we could certainly use a few more vets in rural Saskatchewan.

This is Buffalo, he is a Charolais steer that I bought from my uncle. I picked my steer for his long body, deep rib cage, and overall proportion. He is also extremely docile and has a good appetite. He has worked out well with minimal glitches this year.

Activities outside of 4-H: I’ve done gymnastics for 2 years. Coach Ellie says I could do competitive gymnastics next year if I want. I like to curl but I couldn’t join this year because gymnastics was longer. I’m playing my second year of baseball with the St. Brieux Brewers. And I like Track & Field a lot. I get to ride my sister’s horse and that’s fun.
Why should you buy my steer? I’d appreciate you to consider to buy Nigel. He’s a nice steer and deserves a good freezer. Also, when I sell Nigel I might be able to ask my friend, Bernie, to find me a horse. Mom and Dad would say YES, if I had some money.

Danny is a home-raised steer that I picked out last summer. He has all the qualities that I look for in a steer. He is longspined and big framed, perfect to pack on the pounds. Doug is a Simmental steer. I have taken many of this cow’s steers and they have always exceeded my expectations. He is part of the family of most of the steers I have taken. I picked him because he was related to my other steers that have also turned out.

ROBYN WILTON & CARROT
AGE: 19 // AGE GROUP: SENIOR // PARENTS: LACEY ANNAND & MURRAY WILTON
YEARS IN 4-H: 13 // PROJECT: MARKET STEER

What is your favourite project? Why? My favourite project has always been steers! I enjoy seeing the physical results of my efforts such as weight gain and muscle development. They also tend to be calmer and easier to work with throughout the year and on show day. What will you put your steer money towards? University tuition and living costs. Activities outside of 4-H: Spin, pilates, hanging out with friends and family. Why should you buy my steer? Carrot has been developed on a balanced feeding program in order to maximize performance and quality. He is structurally sound as well as quiet in temperament. By purchasing him, you are supporting local agriculture as well as my university studies.
I HAVE A BUTCHER SPOT AVAILABLE IF NEEDED.
THANK YOU TO LAKE COUNTRY COOP FOR BUYING MY 2025 STEER.

Carrot is a commercial Simmental chosen for his size, as well as his long, deep, and smooth make. His structure allows for lots of meat and muscling, plus his friendly personality made him an easy choice!

KYLE WILTON & DONKEY
AGE: 16 // AGE GROUP: SENIOR // PARENTS: MURRAY WILTON & LACEY ANNAND
YEARS IN 4-H: 11 // PROJECT: MARKET STEER & HEIFER

What is your favourite project? Why? Heifer because I get to see them go into the herd and see what kind of cow they become. What will you put your steer money towards? Schooling and expanding my personal cow herd. Activities outside of 4-H: hockey
Why should you buy my steer? My steer will be very tasty to fill the freezer with. I HAVE A BUTCHER SPOT AVAILABLE IF NEEDED.

Donkey is off the cow I bought as a heifer to show in 4H two years ago, winning reserve grand champion. She was artificially inseminated to Head of State 21K, an angus bull. My steer is very wide across the top, deep bodied, and is packed full of meat and will be well finished by sale date. He also has a great temperament which is part of the reason I chose him.
