Happy Holidays Limousin Voice readers! As I sit at my desk gathering my thoughts for this last Voice of the year, my head is still spinning from the busy Fall. It was good to visit with some of you along the show and sale road, and I hope you will agree with me that we have had lots to talk about. Let’s start with how competitive Limousin animals have been on the road. It has been without a doubt, one of the strongest displays of Limousin animals throughout the country. Nothing attests more to that statement than the achievements of Limousin in supreme championships and multi breed competitions. Congratulations to all of you who invested time and money on the show road, not only promoting your program but allowing the Limousin breed to have a noticeable presence. Another observation was the number of young people in the Limousin barns this fall. It is encouraging to see numerous “under 35” interested and engaged in the Limousin breed. I would also like to send a special thank you to the Manitoba volunteers and show chair Darby Cochrane for an excellent National Show in Brandon. This issue of the Voice recognizes achievements at the major shows and the Show Cattle of the Year winners for 2012 in details, so I won’t recap the results in this column. But I can never thank Masterfeeds enough for their support in our program. CLA Board Meeting Your board of directors met in Calgary December 9-11. The highlight of the meeting was the strategic planning of the next year using the information from Spotlight on Limousin focus groups. A full report on these sessions will be in the February Voice.

New Breed Brochure You may have noticed a new breed promotional brochure entitled “Canadian Limousin” launched this Fall. The 12 page booklet gathers facts and figures about the Limousin breed and the advantages of choosing Canadian genetics. While the publication is used to promote the Limousin breed domestically, it also addresses marketing needs outside of Canada. Transition from microsatellite to SNP It has been mentioned in newsletter and previous Voices that we are changing our method of DNA to be more current with the new technology. The transition has already started and at this time, it doesn’t have any apparent effect on our members. The one thing that has changed is the hair samples that you send to the lab, it now requires a bigger hair root sample. Please make sure that your sample counts 40 to 50 hairs from now on. Whole Herd Enrolment Reminder We remind you that Whole Herd Enrolment is due by January 15, 2013. Forms received or on-line inventories posted after the deadline will result in a $10/day/herd late penalty. BEST WISHES FOR THE HOLIDAYS! The CLA office staff will take a short break and our office will be closed from December 24th until January 2nd. At this time, Dallas, Devra and I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas. May the Limousin business be prosperous and good to you in the New Year. Anne Burgess General Manager Canadian Limousin Association

Breed Improvement in Small herds (and larger ones too)

Often there are misconceptions that smaller herds cannot participate in breed improvement programs effectively and that the selection tools available have limited value. Unfortunately I suspect that many folks follow through on this notion and do not submit data to the CLA for inclusion in genetic evaluation. In an attempt to clarify things, let’s start at the ending and work back into this small cowherd. Many folks with smaller herds consider EPDs as the genetic selection or marketing tool that they are not able to participate in. EPDs are calculated using pedigree and performance data submitted to the association and use comparisons of cattle that are managed in the same way to describe differences like bigger/smaller, quieter/wilder, leaner/fatter, etc. Because the EPD are based on comparisons, it is true that you need at least 2 cows to have calves of the same sex. In this regard, even a cow herd of 4 or 5 cows can have at least 1 good contemporary group worth of data (2 or more calves of the same sex born within a 90 day time frame). In the past, computer power limited us to only looking at pedigree through one side (the sire). These types of herds often had their data removed since they often used a single sire (can’t compare sires). Nowadays the evaluation looks at the full pedigree (animal model) and thus even single sire groups are included. The data that is stored in the association database is resent every evaluation, so even the data that was edited out in the distant past due to computing limitations is now sent each run and included. Some traits, particularly those that are scored subjectively do have issues with inclusion when we look at smaller herds, although this issue is not limited to these herds. One of the key reasons is variation, or more importantly lack of variation. To further explain, EPD are calculated by making comparisons of phenotypes within a contemporary group. The differences in performance between animals in the same environment are step 1 in the formation of an EPD. We could talk about these differences as being the “information” that is contained in the data. So what if all the data is the same? A good example here would be a herd where all the animals have their docility scored as a 1. When you compare the animals raised in the same environment, which one is quieter? Which one is wilder? The answer is that based on the data we don’t know, as they are all the same. This type of data contains no information that can be used for the genetic evaluation and thus it cannot be used. The environment (good stockmanship / time and attention paid to the animals) may not allow the genetic differences to be expressed. We cannot compare this “quiet herd” directly with a “wild herd” as the management effects may be completely and totally different. Another concern, and this is very real, is the cost of data collection. For example, a $2000 scale may not seem that expensive in the context of 200 cows, but becomes a bit daunting spread over 10 or 20. There are many rural municipalities/counties/etc. that have scales available for rent. I even know of some herds of over 300 cows that rent the county scale, rather than have their own. As well, many of the newer platform scales are fairly portable and could be cost shared by a group of neighbours. There may even be potential to haul calves to a neighbours or a local auction to weigh them. Ultrasound is another area where neighbours working together can pool cattle and make ultrasound collection more affordable and attainable. Contrary to conventional wisdom about operational size and EPD, one of the key advantages of the participation in the performance program is that EPD can place cattle from a smaller herd on a playing field based on their genetic merit within the breed. When you look at a bull calf as the best calf of a group of 2, it does not tell you very much, but by submitting that group through the performance system, combining it with pedigree ties and the data of other breeders, it becomes possible to say this bull calf fits into a specific portion of the population for a trait. This greatly assists in assessing the many good cattle that are being raised in small herds in the larger context of the Limousin breed as a whole. Not all records will make it into/through the genetic evaluation. This is true for both large and small herds. It is also true that data in larger groups often contains more information as we can make more comparisons However complete and accurate data from small herds is very useful and important in genetic evaluation, particularly when the goal to improve the cattle in the entire breed is taken into context. When combined with pedigree and visual assessment, EPD can help us to sort cattle based on on their strengths and weaknesses, and small herds have a tremendous amount to contribute to that effort. What a fall for the Limousin breed! In a terminal breed noted for its carcass and performance traits, the females exhibited throughout the fall show circuit dominated interbreed competitions at the majority of the shows. These interbreed competitions whether supreme championships or other are judged and evaluated by breeders from various breeds and industry links. This domination reflects the strength of the breeding programs that took the time, effort and expended costs to attend the fall shows, promoting their programs and the Limousin breed. The often used phrase, “the strength of a bull is based on the quality of his mother,” bodes well for the breed and its years forward. Through your promotions, do not omit the maternal aspect of your program; through our history in marketing, we have found great cow herds are usually based on the progeny of a handful a dominant cows. At these fall shows, there is a fresh new attitude in the breed. Quality and numbers were up, along with enthusiasm from the Royal Winter fair right through to Agribition. Much of this new fire is fuelled by the young people in the breed, which relates directly to the success of the Canadian Junior Limousin program. Now we must put the fall successes behind us and concentrate on the most important sector of the breed.....marketing bulls. Despite the fumbling by the CFIA and all the “BS” that took place, markets have remained very steady, especially in the marketing of weaned calves and commercial producers will be ready to source their new sires. Marketing plans must be in place complete with advertising. Remember the old adage...”if you don’t want sell anything, don’t tell anyone and you will be successful.” Quality pictures taken in a natural environment with little background are ideal for commercial advertising - preferably with heads and tops moderately clipped. Actual data seems more effective than flowery footnotes...although the cowboys can read, their goal is live calves that top the market in the fall. Customer service sells bulls but customer service takes caring. Calling your bull customers to see how their calves sold and how the their latest sire calved is far more important than calling them the day before your sale. We must realize that the cow/calf producer is just as proud of his calf crop as you are of yours. Since marketing bulls to producers is a one-on-one task, you have no one to blame upon failure; therefore breeders must get out of their “comfort zone” and contact as many producers they can reach. Just like us, they too like to visit about the industry and remember, it is more difficult to hear of their requirements with your mouth open. Since the majority of the people in agriculture hate paying tax, do not be afraid of assisting producers with their problem prior to year end. The future for the livestock industry looks very promising, as a matter of fact downright exciting...so best wishes for a happy and prosperous 2013 but now, from all of us at the Limousin Voice, best wishes through this festive season of family and friends.

We are pleased to present the Elite Dam awards for the third year since its revamp. These dams portrait the ideal scenario including calving ease, milk production and docility. Their performance is measured by their EPD’s. The qualifying criteria are: • All Fullblood, Purebred, or percentage registered Limousin females on Whole Herd Enrolment the year of the designation • Must have raised at least 4 calves in the last 6 consecutive years. If the female raised 6 calves in 6 years, she receives the “Super Elite” status. • Must have above breed average EPD for Weaning Weight, Milk and Docility • Must have below breed average EPD for Birth Weight At the last meeting of the Canadian Limousin Association Board of Directors, it was decided that the Elite title on a female is a lifetime designation and not an annual one. Gentec Conference Summary Gentec Conference Summary\Livestock Gentec hosted their annual conference on October 16 and 17, 2012. Here is a recap of the days. AARD session on RFI The Fundamentals of Residual Feed Intake (RFI) session presented by Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development in collaboration with Gentec’s conference was a great success. “I wanted to offer a program that would appeal to both the livestock producer and the research community,” said Dr. Susan Markus. “As researchers, we are often criticized for not making results and other information quickly available to end users. Although numerous results on feed efficiency and RFI have been published in peer-reviewed journals over the years, knowledge needs to reach the livestock industry repeatedly and in an easily understood format so its benefits from a genetic improvement to profitability standpoint are clear. Offering the session during Gentec’s conference was an attempt to get some of that knowledge out and have people in the livestock industry talk about it so we can improve our understanding of its applications.” Keynote speakers Dr. John Basarab and Dr. Monty Kerley were a great complement to each other, as both have worked in feed efficiency as well as genetics and nutrition respectively. Panellists (cow/calf producer and Limousin breeder, Randy Bollum*; bull test-station operator, Neil French; feedlot operator, Stuart Thiessen) spoke about the real-life application of the technology at the ranch, which does not always happen with new technologies and research. Their viewpoints were a welcome reinforcement for knowledge gained and used, and a reality check as to where to focus research in future.

*Watch for a detailed interview with Limousin breeder Randy Bollum in the next issue of the Voice.

“It was clear after the conference that we have a lot of information on feed efficiency that is of great interest to the cattle industry. However, now we need to focus on getting the message out about how it relates to improvements in genetic selection from the economics side. Really, we need a marketing and communications strategy for feed efficiency to improve adoption of this valuable technology.” John Basarab on RFI As part of Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development’s session on RFI, Dr. John Basarab, Senior Scientist at AARD, presented a compelling case that the maintenance requirements of beef cattle have changed little in the past 100 years, and may have even increased. Improvements in production efficiency through crossbreeding, genetic selection, nutrition, health and reproductive management have reduced the carbon footprint of beef by 16 percent between 1977 and 2007. Selecting genetics for lean growth and measuring feed intake have improved the feed efficiency in the hog industry by 32 percent since 1970. However, in the beef industry, genetic selection for feed-to-gain ratio has not improved feed efficiency or reduced cow maintenance costs. Alternatively, residual feed intake (RFI) or “net feed efficiency” is now the preferred method for genetically selecting beef cattle for efficient feed utilization. RFI is actual feed intake adjusted for individual differences in body size, growth and live animal backfat thickness using real-time ultrasound. This is referred to as RFI-fat or RFI adjusted for backfat thickness. It identifies animals with lower feed intake at equal body size, growth and body composition. Other factors affecting intake (such as gender, age, season, temperature, physiological status, and previous nutrition/compensatory gain) are similar when the animals undergo their feed intake test under standard diets and feeding protocols in a central test location. The basic hypothesis is that variation exists in the net energy maintenance requirements of animals and that RFI reflects these differences. Just like a low golf handicap, producers should be looking for low RFI with a balance of other good traits (such as aboveaverage growth and carcass quality for bulls that produce feeders, or above-average growth and good maternal traits for replacements).

Limousin Voice Christmas 2012  24

Selecting for low RFI-fat will have no effect on growth, carcass yield and quality grade; it will reduce feed intake at equal weight and average daily gain; improve feed-to-gain ratio by 10-15 percent; and reduce NEM and methane production. It has no effect on age at puberty; on calving patterns in firstcalf heifers; on pregnancy, calving or weaning rates. It has a positive effect on body fatness/weight in cows, particularly during stressful periods; and it does reduce feed costs: $0.070.10/hd/d feeders, $19-38 million and $0.11-0.12/hd/d in cows, $54-110 million. Al Schaefer on infrared thermography Dr. Al Schaefer of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada gave a very informative presentation on new technological developments in early disease detection and metabolic efficiency in livestock. He explained that the body heat all mammals produce depends on their state of health, metabolic process and environment—and varies among individual animals of the same species. Schaefer and his research collaborators are using infrared thermography (IRT) to try to quantify this heat production and use it for practical purposes. The new technology is based on taking thermal pictures of an animal’s orbital area while it is unstressed to determine its heat signature or heat loss. In terms of health applications, IRT is based on the principle that a sick animal or the area surrounding an infection will generate more heat (like a fever) than a healthy animal. IRT cameras can detect this heat loss at a very early phase of infection, allowing for faster response to treatments and a reduction in overall morbidity and health costs. IRT can identify diseases such as ear infections, bovine respiratory disease and mastitis. IRT is also being used to measure metabolic efficiency. Preliminary research results show that it can identify animals who use more energy to produce heat rather than muscle growth or milk. If IRT can identify more efficient animals, producers can reduce the cost of feeding and the environmental impact of animal production. As the technology is refined, IRT cameras can be a cost-effective and complementary tool to existing technologies (like genomics or individual feed intake equipment) to identify and validate sick or inefficient animals. How can we feed the world by 2050? “Meat protein” was one of the most popular answers to this question asked at the thematic conference dinner. Bias may have been a little stacked in favor of this answer since dinner was served at the Pampa Steakhouse, known for serving its wide variety of select cuts of beef, pork, poultry and lamb, and its convivial ambiance—which helped attendees “get into the mood.” Everybody at every table provided an answer, all of which were videotaped. The video will be available on our website along with interviews of attendees on what genomics is and what it can do. Examples show how Gentec is embracing an interactive approach and social media to reach out to people. The aim is to show where and how genomics can help the Canadian livestock industry be successful and contribute to solving the upcoming food-based challenges.

PREMIER BREEDER & EXHIBITOR Payne Livestock, Lloydminster, SK Limousin Voice Christmas 2012  27

My name is Cameron Olson. I live just outside of Calgary, Alberta, on a half section of land. My family and I have raised purebred Limousin cattle for the last six years. Currently, I am eighteen years old and attending Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. I am majoring in Animal Science, and have plans to make a career out of raising cattle. My involvement in the Limousin breed started in 2005, when I purchased my first purebred heifer from the Pacesetter sale at FarmFair International. She was big, and I was little, and she pushed me all over every show ring she entered, but I loved her for it. I haven’t looked back since then, and I have never regretted my decision to enter into such a fantastic breed with such fantastic people. As a whole, Limousin is posed to rocket to new heights in the next decade. Cattle numbers are down across North America, due to international markets and environmental issues. Some estimates claim that the North American herd is down to 1958 levels, and demand for lean, tasty inexpensive beef is only going up. Limousin fills that niche in the consumer’s needs, by providing beef that is naturally leaner, yet tasty

and tender, and more economical when compared to most other breeds. By attending Texas A&M University, I am developing the skills Limousin needs to help push it forward in the beef cattle marketplace. Attending TAMU as an international student is not easy. I am far from home and the cows that I love, it’s expensive and, here in Texas, really hot sometimes. However, the skills that I developed while at home with my cattle have allowed me to attend TAMU and study in its prestigious College of Agriculture. Without having developed my leadership and organization skills, it’s doubtful that I could have made it all the way down here. My terms as AJLA and CJLA president and secretary boosted my confidence and provided invaluable lessons in time management, planning, meeting organization, delegation of duties, and the importance of being responsible. The network of friends I have developed has also proven totally invaluable. Even here, I am meeting people who know friends that I have at home. Without these networks, the new connections wouldn’t be made. That is a really cool part of the entire thing. The people I know and the things I can do I owe almost entirely to the Limousin breed. Program. I will be graduating in spring 2013 with an Honours BA degree along with a Teachers’ Certificate. I developed my passion and interest for the purebred and full blood Limousin cattle through helping on my parent’s farm as well as helping to prepare and show Limousin heifers for my uncle. Over the years I have gained more knowledge on EPDs, the growing genetic base of the Limousin breed and what to be concerned about when selecting and raising breeding stock on the farm.

Education: Currently, in fourth year at Wilfred Laurier University, Brantford Campus in the Concurrent Education

Ever since I was eleven years old, I have been involved with showing Limousin cattle as a 4-H member as well as in many open shows, at a number of fairs and the Royal

Limousin have and will continue to be central to my life for the foreseeable future. I believe that they are one of the breeds that can become super successful on the global market, given the right amount of guidance and hard work. They have added so much to my education and to my career plans already that it only seems fair to try and add some back to the organization. Hopefully, through my education at TAMU, I can gain more of the skills necessary to help with the advancement of the breed. Cameron Olson Agricultural Winter fair in Toronto. In addition to being a 4-H member, I am a member of the Ontario Junior Limousin Association and have attended and shown Limousin heifers at the National Junior Limousin Conference in London in the summer of 2005 and Orangeville in the summer of 2011. Taking part in the National Junior Limousin Conferences helps to promote the Limousin breed but also encourages junior members, such as myself, to become the leaders of the future. Furthermore, this year I am the Queen for the Ontario Limousin Association and just had the pleasure of presenting ribbons to the winners at the National Junior Limousin Conference held in Orangeville and the Ontario Provincial Limousin Show at the Lindsay Exhibition.

Being a 4-H member in Huron County also gives me the opportunity to not only help junior members get their cattle ready for the show ring but also explain to them some of the attributes of Limousin cattle such as being known for high quality carcasses

and eye appeal, so they will be ready for the judges questions while in the show ring. In the future, I look forward to showing Limousin cattle and inspiring other 4-H members and Junior Limousin members to explore the benefits of being part of the 4-H

My name is Frazer Falconer and I live with my family in Huron County, in the province of Ontario, on our beef and sheep farm.

through the Sodbusters Club.

My father has grown up with Limousin cattle, so I have had the pleasure of also growing up knowing the Limousin breed of cattle. For the past couple of years I have started to show a Limousin calf. I won the steer class at the Seaforth Fall Fair, and planned to continue showing in that class until it was cancelled. I am a member of the Huron County 4-H Beef Club and for the last 2 years have shown a bred heifer in the Lucknow Beef Club. The competition has been excellent because it is showing that the Limousin breed of cattle are still in demand and still placing at the top in the show ring. I have also been a member of the South Huron Sheep 4-H Club for the past 9 years and belong to the Huron County Sodbusters. I have plowed at the International Plowing Match twice Hello, may name is Taylor Richards, I’m 18 years old and I’m currently finishing up my last year of high school in a small community just outside of Lloydminster, SK. Next year I’m attending Lakeland College in Vermillion, AB taking Animal Science technology. I enjoy playing hockey and volleyball and of course showing my Limousin cattle. In the future I would like to uphold a career in farming and or ranching. The Limousin breed was something that was introduced to me at a very young age, when I was nine years old and eligible to join our local 4-H club I did, taking both a steer and heifer. I decided it was an obvious choice that I would select a female from my uncle Scott and auntie Jackie Payne of Greenwood Limousin, being that they are pioneers to the breed, I knew this would be a wise choice. I picked out a red Wulf’s Klint daughter and ended up winning my club show. The following summer I attended my first National Junior show in Olds, AB

program and learning more about the promising qualities of the Limousin breed. Kristina Drennan

My father, brother and myself had the pleasure of attending the Canadian Junior Limousin Show in Orangeville this year. Every 5 years it comes to Ontario and I will plan to attend with my younger brother as a support, I will be too old to enter when it arrives again in Ontario. My grandfather Frank Falconer passed away several years ago and was a member of the Limousin Association. My father contacted the Association asking if I could use the herd letters and numbers he used for his Limousin cattle so I will take over those letters and carry on hopefully through my fathers and grandfathers eyes in the Limousin cattle industry. I was enrolled at University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus last year and took the first year of the Agricultural program. I will continue my studies there starting in January 2012. It is my hope that I will be able to farm with my mother and father, Les and Deb, with a couple of my cousins, I had an amazing experience and have attended 10 Junior Limousin shows, including a couple of nationals in Olds, AB, Lloydminster, AB, Virden, MB and Weyburn, SK. I have had great success with showing my Limousin cattle and the junior programs have offered me so many great opportunities. It has been a confidence booster, helped with my public speaking and people skills and of course has introduced me to lifelong friends all across the country. I truly owe so much to the Limousin breed for all it has done and taught me. To this day I own a small, very precise herd of purebred limo cows and enjoy showing them at jackpots, fairs, 4-H, junior shows and fall shows. I’m also president of the AJLA and try to stay as active in the organization as possible trying to help and show younger members all of which this great breed has to offer, as well as the many opportunities to take advantage of. with the herd of Limousin cattle that they have, as well as cash crop and manage a small flock of sheep. My father sells Limousin bulls every year and has had a great success in selling the bulls across Ontario. I am proud to say that our cattle are Limousin and that our family enjoys watching them graze in our nearby pastures. Frazer Falconer

In conclusion I believe I’m a very eligible contestant for the CJLA Scholarship. Thank you for your time, sincerely, Taylor Richards

Press Release

Canadian Limousin Association seeks to align breeders with industry and market trends Conferring with all industry segments, Limousin cattle breeders seek to better understand and realign their breeding decisions with client priorities

Calgary, 10 December 2012. The Canadian Limousin Association hosted two round table sessions

entitled “Spotlight on Limousin comprising representatives of the meat packers, cattle feeders, cow-calf operators and their own purebred producers in order to discuss traits of value inherent to the Limousin breed and how to apply them to maximize performance and profitability. One session took place in Ontario on December 3rd, the other was held today in Calgary. Matthew Heleniak of Norwich Packers presented to the session, emphasizing the unique characteristics of Limousin cattle and their high yielding ability that his operation relies upon to service a demanding market in Ontario. Norwich packers operate a vertically integrated operation that feeds, slaughters, packs and markets primarily Limousin hybrid cattle sourced in Alberta. Jeff Trafford of Canada Beef Inc. spoke to the retail marketing element of Canadian branded beef and the importance of leveraging the Canadian Beef brand for all high-quality Canadian beef. He encouraged producers to call upon the organization in a support capacity, as the CBI works to add value to all aspects of Canadian beef value chain, bringing broader net benefit back to check-off contributors. With lively participation from over 80 participants at both the Ontario and the Alberta sessions, the forums developed a renewed plan for the Limousin breed, refocusing on adding muscle and yield naturally by crossbreeding. This information will be applied to raise the profile of superior Limousin genetics within the entire beef value chain and the need to supply cattle that achieve greater yield. We invite you to visit www.limousin.com for a complete report on the Spotlight on Limousin focus groups and clips of the presentations. About the CLA The Canadian Limousin Association is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta and serves as the voice of approximately 550 Limousin purebred producers within the larger industry and throughout Canada.

Excelling in the Real World

By Piper Whelan

Featuring: Scott Bodell, Golden Harvest Ranches

Editor’s note: This is the third profile of our new column “Excelling in young beef producer who has chosen the Limousin breed. These “under For Scott Bodell, raising Limousin cattle is part of a legacy that began before he was even born. He got his start in the beef industry through his parents, Lorne and Flossie Bodell. Both Lorne and Flossie have roots in the early days of the Limousin breed in Canada, and Bodell and his three siblings went through the 4-H program with Limousin projects and were active in the junior Limousin program. Today, Bodell, along with his wife Jaime and son Cole, operates Golden Harvest Ranches at Sherwood Park, Alberta with long time friend Scott Kelder, who went through the junior program with Bodell. With this successful partnership, Bodell is able to carry on his family’s legacy of raising Limousin cattle, with a passion, he states, that was handed down to him. “I know a lot about the breed and genetics. So I obviously had a leg up starting with this breed as opposed to other ones.” One of Bodell’s proudest accomplishments with Limousin cattle is his success at cattle shows. Noting the promotion that comes with showing cattle, Bodell values showing cattle primarily as an enjoyable endeavor that connects him to his family’s legacy and achievements. “It has been kind of a hobby because I’ve worked in the oil patch and I’ve been a full time farmer, so I’ve had my family help take care of the cattle,” Bodell explains. “And it’s more of a hobby so I can go to the shows in the fall and be competitive and try to accomplish the things my dad did when he was younger.” One of Bodell’s most recent achievements in the show ring was exhibiting the Champion Limousin Female at Farmfair International 2011. “She was fourth in the top five of the Supreme (Female Show). They invited a bunch of extra cattle (into the Supreme) ... so that’s a pretty big accomplishment to rank that high in comparison to other breeds.”

the real world.” The Limousin Voice is proud to feature another 30” represent the next generation of committed Limousin breeders. In looking towards the future of the Canadian beef industry and his own beef program, Bodell is looking back at the Limousin legacy with an interest in fullblood Limousin genetics to meet the current market demand for increased yield. “We want to work on genetics and get to the point where when people need a cross back to the fullbloods for yield, because Limousin is really known for its yield and carcass traits, its efficiency,” Bodell explains. “That came from the fullbloods ... And we’ve bred away from that a bit to make cows a little more functional, sound, and increase longevity. And so when we need to go back, to have a terminal cross to increase yield, I think it’s important we have a fullblood.” This focus on the past genetics successes of the Limousin breed is one of the ways that Bodell is improving his own herd, an effort that keeps him working towards the future.

When asked what energizes him to keep moving forward with his beef operation, Bodell, 27 years old is quick to cite his past successes as his motivation, particularly with his show cattle. “Our successes over the last few years have gone from being successful at the junior level to being successful at the open level against everyone, so it’s a large step,” he recalls. Being able to make it on their own in the cattle industry as young breeders has inspired the forces behind Golden Harvest Ranches to continue working towards their goals. “Our successes have driven us to reach higher peaks,” Bodell proudly states. With a strong connection to the Limousin breed and the achievements of older generations, along with new ideas and opportunities, Bodell and his herd are looking towards future successes in the Canadian beef industry. The Limousin breed, Bodell predicts, will play a prominent role in the industry’s future. By looking into the genetic benefits offered by Limousin cattle, particularly with interest in fullblood genetics, Bodell sees a thriving future for Canadian Limousin breeders to take advantage of. “I think if we’re poised to take on that role, if we have enough volume, so that premium that is paid by the packers and the feeders will dictate what type of cattle that the commercial man is going to use,” Bodell states. “And I think if we are poised with those numbers and the industry is pushing our way, then we have a really good chance to follow up a larger portion of the market.” This outlook and his attention to the successes of the past and how they can improve the future will allow Scott Bodell to carry on his family’s Limousin legacy for many years to come.

TRADE MISSION TO RUSSIA AND KAZAKHSTAN The Golden Autumn Show is an incredible event celebrating food, its production and everything related to it. There were Display of bread craft at the not many animals; Golden Autumn Show in Moscow some Herefords, Angus, dual purpose Simmental and Kalmyk (native Russian breed).

Russia and Kazakhstan have been active buyers of livestock genetics in the last few years. You may have heard of Angus, Hereford and Charolais animals that have been sold for export to these countries. We have also hosted numerous Eastern European and Asian visitors, coming to Canada on beef industry discovery tours. As a follow up, Agriculture Canada and the Alberta government started planning a trade mission to both countries. The planning began in August for an October mission. Along the way, came the E.coli issue which prevented Minister Ritz to join and the federal portion was postponed. However, the ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Alberta continued with their programion and invited industry members to join them. The Canadian Beef Breeds Council was included and my involvement on the Executive allowed for my participation to the trade mission from October 10th to the 21st. I joined other CBBC representatives, exporters, industry delegates and government officials. Moscow, Russia October 12-13 The program in Moscow encompassed of few meetings with buyers and attendance at the Golden Autumn Show.

The Golden Autumn Show takes place in a massive park including several buildings

Some countries promoted their livestock via a booth in the trade show, notably Australia and the United States. Apparently France participated two years ago but was not present this year. A few Herd of Kalmyk cows in Russia exporters were also participating (none from Canada). Semex had a huge presence with a dairy promotional booth. Orenburg, Russia October 15-16 Orenburg was the host of the Russian-Canadian Business Forum. A formal program included speeches from government officials from both countries, presentations from the Canadian Hereford Association, CBBC and Roger Davis (introduction to embryo transfer) were also part of the program. The highlight of the event was the signing of an agreement of cooperation between the Canadian Hereford Association and the Russian Kazakh White-Head Breeders Association, as well as a Memorandum of Understanding between Xports International and the region of Orenburg-Ivolga for the supply of genetics. It was also the official launch of Herd of Kazak White Heads the Russia/Canada Consultative Centre. The main objectives of the centre are;

Limousin Voice Christmas 2012  38

**Extension of mutually beneficial cooperation between Canada and Russia **Organization and hosting of RussiaCanada workshops Abattoir visited in Kazakhstan on beef cattle breeding **Scientific support and consultation for the enterprises purchasing genetic material and modern Canadian technologies In the afternoon, an export café was set up where each organization had a table and an interpreter. This was an opportunity to speak with buyers and other interested parties. The day concluded with an official reception to celebrate the alliance between the region of Orenburg and Canada. The following day, we were taken out to see a herd of Kalmyk, Angus and Hereford. The cattle were well taken care of, and the landscape was very similar to southern Alberta/northern Montana. The Hereford breed is widely accepted as it fits well with the local Kazak White Heads. This could represent an opportunity to promote crossbreeding to a terminal breed, such as Limousin in the future. Astana, Kazakhstan October 17-18 The Canadian Embassy established most of the program in Kazakhstan and the ambassador travelled with the group during our journey. We started with an open industry meeting where 12-15 people were expected but over Ambassador Stephen Millar 35 showed up. Each member of the Canadian delegation did a presentation followed by the opportunity to have a private discussion with interested parties. I presented material about Limousin genetics in Canada. I had great response for Limousin cattle and lots of questions about the black ones.

We also met with KazAgro (farm credit) which is looking for joint venture partners. They control not only financing but buyers’ options of suppliers. I was encouraged about a partnership after our meeting but I do believe we need to be pro-active and strengthen our relationship with them. We finished the day at the Canadian embassy for an official reception, hoisted by Stephen Millar, the Canadian Ambassador. At the reception, I renewed friendship with Gulmira Issayeva whom I had met in April while she was Alkak cattle in a feedlot in Kazakhstan in Calgary. At the time she was head of the Livestock Department but has since been promoted to Deputy Minister. She told me that she is implementing our Limousin Whole Herd Enrollment system and fee schedule for their smaller breeds as she thought it would work well for them. I had explained the system in detail to her when we met the first time. Farm visits were arranged for us the following day, but unfortunately no Limousin cattle were part of the program. Kostanay, Kazakhstan October 19-20 We had some interesting farm visits (breeding and feedlot), toured a slaughterhouse and a vet lab. We saw a herd of Kazak White Heads, some Angus, some Charolais and some Alkal; a local 3 way cross between the three breeds. Seeing the effective use of hybrid vigor was reassuring that there will be opportunities for other genetics beside Angus and Herford. We also visited a small commercial farm that gets financial support from KazAgro for Alkal bulls in order to improve its herd. Next steps for the Canadian Limousin Association: A follow up meeting took place at Agribition with some of the key folks from Kazakhstan. The CLA board of directors is considering their recommendations; such as translation of our new breed brochure, workshop during their next agricultural event in March, Canadian farm visits next Fall during Farmfair and Agribition.

THE STORY BEHIND MASTERFEEDS

The Canadian Limousin Association is extremely proud of its alliance with Masterfeeds, a provider of performance nutrition to Canadian Cattlemen for over 83 years. “As a leader in the Canadian animal nutrition industry, Masterfeeds serves livestock and poultry producers with research based and proven feeding solutions, supported by skilled employees who are accountable to our shareholders’ long term success.” First introduced under the Cafeteria Brand Feed, it was around 1930 that the Toronto Elevator Company started selling quality feeds under the Masterfeeds name. At about the same time, another company, Purity Flour Mills, sold products to farmers under the Pioneer brand name. Thirty years later, these well-known Canadian companies united. This new company continued to sell the Masterfeeds line of products. From the very beginning, the company was inventive and adopted a leadership position in Canadian agriculture. Through its network of HACCP accredited feed mills, Masterfeeds has been providing the rations, field support and nutrition expertise you have been expecting to make the most of your herd’s genetics. Masterfeeds is dedicated to developing innovative products and programs. It is backed by one of North America's leading research centers, and trusted by producers and animal owners nationwide. For example, Masterfeeds was the first to introduce the 50 lb. paper bag to the marketplace. This introduction was a significant improvement over the previous industry standard of a 100 lb. jute bag. Another example of innovation was the pelleting and crumbling of feeds. Masterfeeds Animal Nutrition Solutions was at the forefront of these innovations. Masterfeeds Beef Feed Programs are specifically designed to help you. Canadian cattle breeders obtain maximum results and profits from using Masterfeeds in their herd. Whether it's in the show ring, or in the feedlot, Masterfeeds has you covered from start to finish. Its knowledgeable and dedicated sale staff will advise you and service your needs. In 2012, Masterfeeds and the Canadian Limousin Association embarked on a partnership to enhance the Show Cattle of the Year Awards program. However feeding your Limousin cattle Masterfeeds products is an every day winning combination.

The Alberta Limousin Association has had a busy past couple of months. November saw the ALA along with the Limousin Bonanza Show hold the Bonanza Gold Show at Farmfair. Eleven exhibitors brought over 50 head out to be evaluated by Howard and Wendy Schneider. Following the show, the annual Champions Reception was held which is always a great way for the exhibitors to unwind following a long show day! Thank you to long time banquet sponsor Bar-Dale Limousin, and co-sponsor Bodell Limousin for treating all to some great hospitality. During the reception the late Dale Barclay was honored with a memorial award in his name given to a Bonanza Show exhibitor. The award was voted on by exhibitors so the award recipient was named by their peers, recognizing someone that possesses the same characteristics that Dale did; an individual that is passionate about the breed, supports the association activities and promotes the breed domestically and internationally to both purebred and commercial producers. The Bonanza Group along with the Barclay family were pleased to present the 2012 Dale Barclay Memorial Award to Golden Harvest Ranches, Scott and Jamie Bodell of Sherwood Park. Next up was the AGM, inaugural Last Man Standing and Pacesetter Sale December 8th in Olds, AB. The Pacesetter sale was extremely strong throughout which just goes to show how exciting it is to be in the Limousin breed right now. Thank you to all consignors for bringing out an exceptional set of cattle and to all bidders and buyers for supporting the sale. The Last Man Standing Jackpot Show was held prior to the sale which saw 10 sale entries be judged by over 50 spectators and breeders in attendance. The event allowed the audience to be the judge, eliminating one animal per round until one man, or “heifer” was left standing. The challenge was enjoyed by all and created a bit of pre-sale entertainment. Congratulations to Pinnacle View Limousin and Greenwood Limousin who exhibited the winning animal with Greenwood Polled Zinderella, who went on to lead off the Pacesetter Sale and sold for $10,000. Throughout the day and following the Pacesetter Sale a silent auction and semen auction took place with some hot items up for sale. The fundraiser was a huge success with over $5500 being raised which will be put towards the upcoming National Show the ALA will be hosting in 2013. Thank you to all who donated, bid and purchased items; your support is greatly appreciated. Earlier in the day the AGM was held, although the crowd was somewhat smaller for the meeting business was still done. If you missed the meeting you can find the full AGM reports on the ALA website at albertalimousin.ca. To renew your membership for the 2013, please contact Donna Olson or email the ALA at albertalimousin@gmail.com. The ALA executive saw no changes this year, however we did welcome aboard three new board members. We would like to welcome Amanda Matthews, Carla DeJager & Donna Rowe to the board as we said goodbye and thank you to Frank Murphy, Kevin Stopanski & Scott Bodell for their years of service on the board. Thank you also to Barb Miller who let her name stand to complete a second term on the board. The 2013 Executive & Board of Directors for the coming year is as follows: President – Carriann Johnson; Vice President – Mark Porter; Secretary – Barb Miller; Treasurer – Donna Olson; Past President – Wayne Burgess; Directors: Amanda Matthews, Carla DeJager, Donna Rowe, Brittany Papenhuyzen, & Jackie Payne. The board will be meeting in January to plan the 2013 year and assign committee chairs and assignments. If you would like to help out your share your knowledge and ideas on an ALA committee please contact the ALA at albertalimousin@gmail.com. The ALA would also like to announce and congratulate Pinnacle View Limousin on being named the 2012 Purebred Limousin Breeder of the Year by their peers. The Swaan and Kishkan families may not have an Alberta address but they are ALA members and are strong supporters of all Alberta fundraisers, activities and events. Rob and daughter Erin are known by many in the industry as they make numerous miles across Western Canada promoting the Limousin breed and participating in shows waving the Limousin banner. But their operation is truly a family affair as the next generation of Pinnacle View is starting to participate in junior shows showcasing the quality genetics that they have to offer. If you were not in Olds, I hope you will take an opportunity to congratulate Pinnacle View Limousin the next time you see them as they are very deserving recipients of this years Purebred Breeder award. The ALA weekend was a great way to kick off the holiday season with the Limousin family! Thank you to all who came out, although the meeting had a small crowd it was evident come the evening that the Limousin breed is still going strong in Alberta. With the optimism surrounding the cattle industry in general the board hopes this will help rejuvenate some of the ALA activities for the upcoming year, now is the time we want to stay active and have a presence within the industry so be sure to take part in ALA activities and maintain your membership within the association. Wishing all Limousin breeders and enthusiasts a Happy Holiday season and all the best as we enter 2013! Carriann Johnson ALA President
