Dear Limousin Members;

Chers membres de l’Association Canadienne Limousin;

Year ends are always bitter sweet to me. There is the whirlwind of travelling to shows and sales, getting ready for the December Board meeting, compiling the Christmas issue of the Limousin Voice, to name a few things on the “to do” list at the CLA. But there is also a sense of accomplishment.

Limousin accomplishments were numerous in 2014; whether in the commercial sector, in the show ring, or with your national breed association; we didn’t go unnoticed! Many thanks to all the volunteers across the country who help to promote this breed that we all love so much. Also thanks goes out to our valuable sponsors and supporters who make our events that much more special and rewarding. Hats off to the Saskatchewan Limousin Association for hosting us in July for the Junior Conference and again in November for an amazing National Show and Sale. The initiatives of the SLA Board and hard work paid off with great turn out of exhibited cattle and visitors attending the events. From all of us who attended – THANK YOU SLA! In this issue of the Voice, you will get a taste of what ILC 2014 offered in Argentina. Their unbelievable hospitality will never be forgotten by those of us who were fortunate enough to attend. If you are interested in a trip that is the perfect marriage of culture and Limousin cattle, mark your calendar for the next International Limousin Congress, August 20-28, 2016 in Ireland. As mentioned in the September newsletter (that was mailed to all CLA members), there are some changes in the horizon for next year. We look forward to a new registry system that will offer our members many more options than the current one. Digital Beef represents a multi-faceted tool for you and more flexibility forthe CLA, not to mention some money savings! Another change in regards to our EPD calculations. The data crunching is moving to the American Simmental Association for most traits. Please take a moment to read the enclosed article written by Dr. Robert Weaber regarding this change. It is important to note that we remain a North American evaluation and all data is combined with NALF’s. Therefore American and Canadian animals will continue to have seamless EPD’s and be fully comparable. Your CLA Board of Directors will be meeting in Calgary on December 12 and 13. Watch for the outcome of their discussions in the January newsletter. We remind you that Whole Herd Enrollment is due no later than January 15th, 2015. On-line users may find instructions on how to post their inventory on our website. Assistance is also always only a phone call away. Please note that the CLA office will be closed from December 24th until January 5th as we take a little bit of time to celebrate the holidays with our love ones. On behalf of the Board of Directors and Dallas and Lori at the office, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and I look forward to a prosperous New Year while continuing to work with you. Kindest regards, Anne Brunet-Burgess CLA General Manager

Making the shift…Understanding the new base for CLA EPDs

By Bob Weaber, Ph.D., Associate Professor/Cow-calf Extension Specialist, Kansas State University Over the past year, work has been undertaken to explore a shift in genetic evaluation service providers for the Canadian Limousin Association (CLA) and US partner the North American Limousin Foundation (NALF). The decision to join the collaborative evaluation undertaken by International Genetic Solutions (IGS) will bring a number of advantages to commercial cow-calf producers and other participants in the beef value chain. The IGS system now includes over 15 million animals and 35,000 genotypes making it the largest and most powerful beef cattle genetic evaluation in the world. The IGS system provides EPDs for the American and Canadian Simmental Associations, American and Canadian Gelbvieh Associations, American Maine Anjou Association, American Chianina Association, American Shorthorn Association, Canadian Angus Association, and the Red Angus Association of America. In early 2015, the CLA and NALF will release their first EPDs from this new collaboration. In addition to forming the largest multi-breed, multi-association genetic evaluation in the world, several of the breeds have agreed to report their EPDs on a common base. Use of a common base makes the EPDs from Simmental, Red Angus, Gelbvieh, Shorthorn and soon Limousin, directly comparable without the use of any adjustments. This makes mating decisions in a planned crossbreeding system much easier for commercial producers using genetic inputs from these breeds. A number of other technical advancements come to the Limousin genetic evaluation through participation in the IGS system. The IGS system computes multi-breed EPDs for a full range of EPD traits including EPDs for Calving Ease, Maternal Calving Ease, Birth Weight, Weaning Weight, Yearling Weight, Milk, Carcass Weight, Yield Grade, Marbling, Rib-eye Area and Fat Thickness. The system accounts for both direct and maternal heterosis effects as well as breed effects. After performance records are adjusted for these effects, breed composition is eliminated from the contemporary group definition. This realignment of contemporary groups into larger groups contributes to higher accuracy EPDs for animals in these groups. The inclusion of a large amount of Angus and Red Angus genetics represented in many of the cooperating breed

databases effectively ties all the data sets together. Correlations between IGS test run and CLA published EPDs were high indicating a strong relationship between the two different genetic evaluation systems. Due to changes in contemporary group structure, differences in models used for calving ease and carcass traits and a large number of related animals providing genetic information from other sources, correlations of 1 were not expected. Adoption of the common base used by a number of participants in IGS will require that Limousin breeders and end users of Limousin influenced genetics recalibrate their ‘eye’ to the new averages. To assist in the transformation, a number of tables have been assembled that illustrate the differences between the existing CLA EPDs and those coming from the new IGS collaboration. Table 1 below includes the average EPDs for active Limousin sires, dams and calves as well as LimFlex sires and calves reported on the base used for International Limousin Genetic Evaluation (ILGE) Fall 2014 EPD release as well as the IGS Fall 2014 base. As you study the values, you note that many of the changes in the averages are fairly modest. Naturally, Limousin breeders want to understand where the breed ranks compared to other participants on the common base. The average EPDs of active sires from Limousin (Limousin and LimFlex), Simmental, Red Angus and Gelbvieh from the Fall 2014 IGS run are reported in table 2. In general, the Limousin influenced sire groups are competitive with the other breeds. This is evidence that CLA and NALF members have been pursuing genetic improvement across a range of economically important traits using the best science and technology available. Finally, table 3 reports the EPDs of five widely used Limousin bulls represented in the CLA data. Evaluation of this data should lead to an increased understanding of the differences in EPD base between the Fall 2014 evaluation and the new common base from the IGS evaluation.

21st International Limousin Congress

Not only a pleasure to attend, but a privilege Every second year, Limousin enthusiasts from around the world are hosted by a different country for a week of genetic appreciation, technical conferences and fellowship. The 21st International Limousin congress (ILC) took place November 2-9 in Argentina. The program began in Buenos Aires with opening ceremonies at the French Embassy in homage of the breed’s origin. The French ambassador was very proud to speak about the fact that Argentina was the first country to form a Limousin association outside of France in 1963. France also had the largest delegation of all 17 counties represented at this year’s ILC.

Day 1: “Los Robles & Don Federico” in the province of Buenos Aires. This large family operation of almost 4,000 hectares and 1300 cows in production, maintains a purebred herd of Limousin Los Robles Ranch females and has been breeding Lim-Flex animals as well. The many resulting black animals on site were a hot topic of conversation among the French, who have difficulty understanding the modifications made to the breed from its original composition. Day 2: The National Livestock Market featured a special Limousin feeder sale. The efficient set-up comprises of catwalks used by buyers who move

The 150 participants (8 from Canada) were treated to extraordinary hospitality by the farms that were visited. Each one more passionate about the breed than the next. All were extremely proud to open their gates to the large group to share the uniqueness of their operation.

from pen to pen, following a mobile auction block, animals are sold in their holding pen not in a sale ring. We witnessed over 600 head sold in less than 20 minutes. Lunch was served at “Santa Maria de Pueblo Nuevo,” a dairy, horse and poultry farm where 25 top Limousin females are the owner’s pride and joy. The day wrapped up at “La Cotidiana” a select herd that Hospitality at its best focuses on quality and not so much quantity. With only 100 hectares, they have resorted to hydroponic crops to produce some of their feed. The casual dinner featured Argentinian dancers, a popular attraction by most male delegates.

Kerr (UK) and Anne Burgess (Canada) retuning to the Executive along with new comers Joe Epperly (US) and Paul Stykes (Ireland). Day 4: An emotional Dietert Family of “Los Ombues” in the province of Santa Fe welcomed the Los Ombues Ranch delegation. The entire herd was on site along with some feeder cattle. Their string was most successful at the show later that week. Few herds made mention of pedigrees/bloodlines in their presentation, but stall cards were displayed at “La Esmeralda” for herd bulls, donor cows and show cattle. Canadian Polled Fullblood bulls have been used successfully in that herd and were still part of their breeding program. They also operate a 2000 head feedlot.

Day 3: The technical program included presentations about the Argentinian beef industry and an interesting feed trial comparing Angus to Limousin (all posted on the CLA website). With the growing popularity of Angus around the world, it seems that many countries are looking for ways and data to distinguish the Limousin breed and find niche markets. There were updates on genomic work being done in France and in North America. Joe Epperly presented on behalf of NALF and the CLA. At the International Limousin Council Annual General Meeting, Aled Edwards from Wales was reappointed as Chairman, Sebastien Stamane (France) as Secretary, with Ian

While travelling, we received several inquiries for Canadian Polled Fullblood genetics from fellow participants; mostly from European countries. It appears that some may even be open to high percentage red animals. Of course the difficult part is the health qualification (must be IBR negative). This is just a point of interest to inform our Canadian members that our genetics had been noticed and are still sought after around the world. Day 5: The Argentine Institute of Agricultural Technology, located in the province of Cordoba validated the value of an Angus x Hereford x Limousin cross at their research farm. The resulting feeders proved to be versatile and adaptable to an intense pasture rotation system that is being promoted in the Pampas region (prairies).

Day 6: Show and Sale. A standalone show took place at the very modest facilities of the Agricultural Society of Jesus Maria. The pen classes were judged the previous day, but championships were awarded in front of the ILC delegation. The individual animal classes combined animals on halter and some loose in the pen. Light clipping, no fitting and optional washing made it for a very “natural” competition.

amount of feed. The abundance of rain (too much in some areas) blessed the land in the eastern part of the country, while in the province of Cordoba, dry conditions demand for high efficient bovines. The traditional closing ceremonies wrapped up the program with the 17 countries’ flags carried in and out. Gifts were exchanged between host and delegations with emotional words of appreciation

Excelling in the Real World Melanie Gollinger, Lisle Limousin By Piper Whelan

Since finishing college, Melanie Gollinger of Lisle, Ontario, has slowly but surely worked at expanding her cattle herd. “When I started working, that’s when I started buying cattle. I only have a couple purebreds right now and a couple Angus cows that I just bought this year to breed to a Limo bull,” the 24 year-old explained. “The reason I don’t have a whole bunch of cows is I want quality over quantity, so I’m willing to spend a little bit of extra money on good animals … Everybody on our farm, we all work full-time off the farm, so that’s where, again, quality over quantity is important, because we can only take care of so many cows, so we’re going to try to make sure those cows are good ones.” Gollinger’s family runs Lisle Limousin. Like many young producers, she started 4-H when she was 10 and attended some local shows

in her first years as a junior. “When I was 13, we had bought a heifer for me to show, instead of showing one of our own,” she said. “That’s when I kind of got more involved with the breed, for one thing, and the industry.” Gollinger then attended her first Canadian Junior Limousin show, which was held in Ontario that year. “After that I continued to go to the national junior shows and became a (CJLA) board member.” Once her junior days came to a close, she got involved with the Ontario Limousin Association board, and now serves as the OLA secretary. Showing Limousin cattle and becoming involved with the CJLA not only helped Gollinger to develop her Limousin herd, but her connections in the cattle business as well. “If it wasn’t for going to junior shows out west, I probably wouldn’t have gone out there and been as aware of all the genetics that are available, other than just what you see in a magazine,” she explained. “You meet a lot of people doing that, and it helped to grow relationships that way,

Limousin Voice Christmas Issue 2014  26

which is extremely beneficial in this business.” After high school, Gollinger studied business marketing at Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario, not too far from home. “I am so glad I chose that because we wouldn’t have been able to show those couple of years if I hadn’t been able to come home. I was still able to come home and work on the animals,” she recalled. Gollinger now works as a corporate marketing coordinator for a John Deere dealer, which keeps her busy with various after-work events. She is also an Arbonne consultant, which takes up her evenings. Agriculture plays a major role in Gollinger’s life, on and off the farm. “It becomes such a big part of your life — not just the animals but the people that are involved — that it would be a really hard thing to walk away from,” she said. “I just love animals and love taking care of them … I just can’t see me not having anything to do with it.” “Now that I’m done school and living and working and all of that, since then I have really

noticed that everything in my life somehow leads back to this industry, whether it’s the people or the business I’m in,” she said. “If I wasn’t involved with cattle, I wouldn’t be involved with agriculture, and I wouldn’t have the job that I have.” At the moment, Gollinger is unsure of where the road will take her, but she knows cattle will play a role in her future. “I obviously intend to always breed good cattle, not just to have numbers, but to have quality there,” she said. “I always intend to have cattle and be involved. Now to what extent that is, I have no idea right now.” Nevertheless, the challenge of raising cattle and staying on top of advances in the industry keeps Gollinger interested in the business. “It’s not like you can skip a year of what’s going on. You have to keep up and you have to want to keep up, otherwise you’re going to get left behind, and nobody wants that,” she said.“I do like the challenge. I like the competition.” When it comes to competition, Gollinger has plenty to say about the advantages of Limousin cattle. “I think our breed is extremely competitive in everything that we do, whether it’s in the show ring or at the packers’ with the commercial guys. We have things that everybody wants, so I think that’s exciting, and people are becoming more aware of the Limousin traits and how they can benefit their own herd.”

Hi, my name is Brandon Hertz and I am currently the Vice President of the Canadian Junior Limousin Association. I came onto the board 4 years ago, and have attended numerous Limousin based shows throughout Canada. I started showing Limousin cattle at the age of 6, and have made countless friendships and learned so much from cattle shows. I am attending Lakeland College, pursuing a degree in Animal Science, and I plan on coming back

to the farm after I finish with my studies. My passion for agriculture was gained at a young age, and to a large degree fellow Limousin breeders have groomed that passion. This breed has done so much for me, with the skills I’ve learned, the friendships I have developed and the memories I have made.

I am very new to the Limousin breed but in my few years, I have met many new people and have learned lots on the show road. I am involved with the committee being a Director at Large and helping out younger members. Right now I am taking the Heavy oil operator technician (hoot) program at Lakeland in the Lloydminister

campus. In the future I hope to bring new genetics to the Limousin breed and help the breed grow to be as large and as well know as the Angus or Simmental breeds.

My name is William Bexte, and I am 12 years old and live on a farm close to Arrowwood, AB. I have been a 4H beef member with the Arrowwood

Beef club for 3 years. Now that I am starting my 4th year in 4H, my parents have let me start my first Heifer project. Yesterday I picked up my first Limousin Heifer from Tessa Nybo. Her name is Hillview Branded An Angel, and I am going to call her Brandy. I picked her name because her mother’s name is Hillview Special Angel and I needed to start her name with the letter “B.” Tessa spent a lot of time with me and my family teaching me how to clip Brandy and giving me lots of showmanship pointers. She told me about all of the opportunities available to me and Brandy and I am happy to have all of them. Tessa gave me your name and email address and told me about the scholarships

available to Junior Limousin members. Today I filled out my application form to become a Junior Member of the Canadian Limousin Association and my mom has faxed it to them. I hope I am not too late to send this letter to you so that I could be able to be included when you are making your scholarship choices this year. Thank you so much for this opportunity. I am excited to see what Brandy and I can do together and to learn more about the Limousin Breed and the Canadian Limousin Association.

Thank you for taking the time to read my application, Brandon Hertz

Thanks Curtis Bielecki

Hi. My name is Laura Scott, I am 18 years old and have been active in both the Canadian Junior Limousin Association and the Ontario Junior Limousin Association for eight years now. I am currently a first year student at the University of Guelph, studying a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Food, Agriculture and Resource Economics. I am finishing my eighth year in 4-H, and have always shown either a Limousin heifer calf or yearling. Showing Limousins for this many years has not left me without success either. I have won top awards at my county level, all with Limousin cattle. My top achievement is winning Reserve Champion Junior Showperson at the National Junior Beef Heifer Show (RAWF) in 2010,

with a Limousin yearling. I have attended numerous Limousin Association events, including the 2007 Canadian Junior Show in London, Ontario, where I won various awards. I also attended the 2011 Junior Show in Orangeville, Ontario. I have attended two Ontario provincial shows – 2012 in Brampton, and 2014 in Markham. I have a great interest in developing and improving upon my family’s purebred herd, both through breeding and the purchasing of Limousin cattle. Over the years, people have tried to talk me into showing a different breed – trying something new. However, I can honestly say that I wouldn’t trade my Limo cattle for anything.

I am writing to apply for the CJLA scholarship that is offered to CJLA members. My name is Melissa MacIntyre and I am 17 years old and I am from Lucknow, Ontario. I have been involved with the Limousin Breed as I have grown up on our family farm. We have had Limousin cattle for just over 10 years now with a herd size of 160 Purebred Registered Cows. Previous to that we ran beef feedlots filled with Western calves each year. We also have a broiler operation and cash crop hay, beans, corn and grains. I started showing Limousin calves in our local 4H Beef Club in pre 4H. Every year since then I have exhibited a Limousin project through the 4H club and eventually at the Royal Winter Fair. I have had many successes in the show ring with my Limousin projects but the largest accomplishment to date was winning the Grand Champion Heifer at the National Junior Beef Heifer Show two years ago. That was an exciting day! Even though winning some of the competitions is exciting I enjoy the work that goes before. Spending time with the show cattle washing, working their hair and walking them are the moments I like the best. I am very proud of the cattle that we have on our farm and enjoy the family time we spend working on them and showing them. On the other side

of the fence I enjoy daily tasks of feeding, helping with calving, haying and checking the cows on pasture. There are never enough hands on the farm it seems. I have been involved with the OJLA since I was in Pre 4H. I have helped with fundraising and have also held the executive positions of Press Reporter, Secretary, President and this year I am the Treasurer. We are not a large organization but the more that help with the events make each event successful. We have worked hard as an executive core to build our membership and the last couple of years have had 35-40 youth involved in our association. I have also helped with hosting the last two Junior National Shows in Ontario. A commitment of time to go to the meetings and events is needed to help out on the executive along with the willingness to work together to grow our junior organization and make it stronger for all of the juniors of the future. I have learned many skill sets from taking minutes, marketing, running meetings, speaking in front of people, soliciting dollars and balancing the books. All of these skills will assist me as I make my way in the future. I also had the opportunity to represent the Ontario Limousin Association as their OLA Queen in 2013. Thank you, Laura Scott

I am a Grade 12 student at F.E. Madill Secondary School. I plan to pursue post secondary education next year to become an RN and eventually a Nurse Practitioner. I play hockey, volleyball and enjoy other seasonal sports. I am active in 4H and work Part time at our local Home Hardware Store. As a family we need to continue to develop this breed. We should focus on the positive aspects of our breed and market towards this. We need to keep an eye on our North American Beef Market and continue to show all cattlemen where our breed can fit into their program. The future of Limousin is strong and the strength of our Junior Members will continue to grow this breed to new heights.

A “Growth” Opportunity: Harnessing Limousin genetic potential for lean growth and efficiency

By Natalie May, Research Assistant and Dawn Trautman, Technology Translator; both with Livestock Gentec at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, AB. There are many positive impacts of increasing growth performance in cattle. Rate of growth and feed conversion have a big influence on the profitability of cattle feeding operations as well as on their environmental footprint, while high pre-weaning growth rates paired with moderate birthweights can increase cow-calf operation profitability without decreasing calving ease. Overall, increasing rate of growth and decreasing time to market for cattle has a positive impact for environmental sustainability and on-farm profitability. Currently, increased growth rates are often obtained through the use of various growth promoting implants. Increasing consumer concerns and international trade barriers due to hormone use in livestock production, presents an opportunity to achieve high growth rates with the use of genomic selection to benefit seedstock producers and commercial operations alike.

Limousin cattle are known for their growth characteristics and muscularity. There is potential to further explore the benefits of these attributes using genomics. Validating genomic markers for increased growth rate and carcass size, without the need for growth implants may prove to be beneficial in the years to come. Increasing information is available on the role certain genes play in muscle development, lean growth and carcass traits in cattle. Recent studies have shown that for genes tested, Limousin cattle have a profile that promotes the production of lean muscle with lower intramuscular fat deposition [1]. Promising markers for predicting loin area and carcass length have also been found within genes that are known to contribute to muscle development [2]. The low residual feed intake (RFI) of Limousin cattle compared to other continental breeds also

represents potential to increase feed efficiency of calves through terminal crosses [3]. Research done at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center found that while Limousin cattle reached smaller slaughter weights than other continental breeds, their higher dressing percentage, lower fat trim and lower bone percentage allowed for comparable retail product and carcass weights [4]. Research to date suggests that there may be efficiency and carcass advantages gained by utilizing the Limousin breed’s lean growth potential and capacity for muscle deposition to compliment increased marbling characteristics of other breeds. The Limousin’s moderate size compared to other continental breeds gives it unique potential in breeding systems where feed efficiency and smaller biological type may be advantageous. However, more information is needed on which genomic regions confer these genetic advantages to offspring in order to ensure the success of a breeding program. Through genomic studies – potentially one that leverages the University of Alberta’s Livestock Gentec’s current and past beef research program – markers for lean growth could be validated to facilitate early identification of sires who pass these valuable traits to their offspring. With this information, further development of purebred and terminal crossbred programs using genomically enhanced EPDs (geEPDs) could enhance the growth and efficiency of cattle production – no growth promotants needed.

VISIT FROM THE CLA GENERAL MANAGER

VISITE DE NOTRE DIRECTRICE GÉNÉRALE

We were pleased to welcome Anne Brunet-Burgess in the province of Quebec in October. Anne interviewed Jeff Blair of Blair Orchards, a commercial breeder using Limousin sires. Watch for their story in the February Voice. Accompanied by the Quebec president, Serge Dethier, Anne spent some time at a feedlot owned by Jean-Paul Palardy, where Lim-Flex feeders are being considered for next spring.

Anne also included a stop at Expo Boeuf. While there was no Limousin show, two heifer calves, owned by FERME J.P.E.R. were on display. We congratulate Diana Lussier-Pelletier and Jule St-Hilaire for their initiative and wish them well in their new venture on the show road. SECOND LIMOUSIN MEAT RETAILER IN QUEBEC We are delighted to announce that Metro Racicot in Ville Mont-Royal is the second grocery store to feature Limousin meat. The retailer offers numerous Limousin veal cuts as part of their meat counter selection. Metro operates a network of more than 600 food stores in Quebec and Ontario, with annual sales of over $11 billion, Metro Inc., founded in 1947, is the only major Canadian food distribution company to have its head office in Quebec. Along with its affiliates and franchisees, Metro Inc. employs in Quebec and Ontario over 65,000 people, whose mission is to satisfy their customers every day and earn their long-term loyalty. The members of the Board of Directors of the Quebec Limousin Association would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year. 2015 looks very promising in the beef industry!

cattle industry.

By this time every year people are thinking about all the things they did not accomplish and the goals they did not meet, but instead we should reflect back on all the positives and the good that came of this most creative time in the

Most recently my wife, Holli and I returned from Agribition in Regina where we have never been more proud to be Limousin breeders. As spectators and participants in this year’s National Show, we marvelled at the wonderful quality of cattle across the board and our breed took a backseat to no one! We heard over and over again from the people who came out to the shows and then took the time to come back to the barns how they appreciated all the hard work and dedication it

takes to get the animals ready for show season and how these are some of the animals that will carry on and keep our breed moving forward and strong. Our Limousin genetics are being sought after around the globe and it is only through the hard work and dedication of our breeders that this is possible. This issue of the Voice will highlight some of the positive aspects of many of the Limousin breeders who have dedicated their lives to the breed and a peak into the future of their programs and what we can expect in the coming years. At this time I would like to thank all the people who support our breed whether it be attending Limousin events throughout the year or by promoting our cattle in a positive manner wherever they go with the hope that this will continue long into the coming year. With calving season just around the corner I would like to wish all the people who make this such an exciting industry to be in a very Merry Christmas and a healthy, safe and prosperous New Year.

Presented to Martin and Donna Bohrson, Hanley, Saskatchewan By Eric Boon, CLA Director The Canadian Limousin Award of Distinction was established to recognize individuals who have dedicated volunteer time to the promotion and growth of the Limousin breed. Candidates are strong believers in Limousin and their promotion efforts have been local, provincial, national and international. This year’s recipients are Marty and Donna Bohrson of Hanley, Saskatchewan. Marty and Donna established the well-known Anchor B Limousin herd over 30 years ago. Their herd has left its marks across Canada and is known for producing top genetics. Even now, 3 years after their dispersal, Anchor B animals still impact many herds. However, today we are taking a moment to offer our thanks to Marty and Donna for the countless hours that they invested in promoting the Limousin breed. They have both volunteered numerous years to the Board of Directors of the Saskatchewan Limousin Association and occupied all positions including president and secretary. Further, Martin completed 2 terms on the CLA Board and was the president in 2001-2002. We will all remember one of the highlights of his presidency when Canada welcomed the world by hosting the 15th International Limousin Conference in 2002.

Marty and Donna transmitted their passion for the Limousin breed to their three sons who were active in all aspects of the farm while still residing at home. Today, the Anchor B prefix is being carried on by middle son Jay and daughter-in-law Bev who raise Limousin cattle with their own family. There’s even been a third generation of Bohrsons participating at the last two National Junior Conferences! Youngest son Scott is operating a successful sales management business that is involved with marketing Limousin cattle, including the 2014 National Sale that was a huge success. Two years ago, Marty joined Scott’s business, while Donna has been contributing her creative talents behind the scenes all along. We are delighted that both Marty and Donna are still involved with the Limousin breed and their dedication continues to benefit all of us in many ways for years ahead to come. On behalf of the Canadian Limousin Association Board of Directors and members, it is my greatest pleasure to present the 2014 Canadian Limousin Award of Distinction to Martin and Donna Bohrson.

CANADIAN JUNIOR LIMOUSIN ASSOCIATION NEWS What a great year we have had! The CJLA would like to say a huge thanks to the Saskatchewan Limousin Association for hosting the National Junior Limousin conference in Saskatoon this summer. The CJLA would also like to thank all the sponsors and volunteers for all they did! It wouldn’t be possible without them. At the Junior conference, the AGM was held. A discussion was held about rewriting the rules for the CJLA because many people had questions and concerns. When it came to the rulebook there were some grey areas. The date was yet to be set to rewrite these rules. Near the end of August the CJLA board held a conference call. A new board was voted on. President; Cassidy Matthews Vice President; Brandon Hertz Treasurer; Carolyn Darling Secretary/reporter; Cheyenne Porter Directors at large; Bailey McConnell, Curtis Bielecki, and Nicole Bielecki During this call Bailey announced that the 2015 NJLC would be held August 6–8 in Stratford, Ontario. It was also discussed that the rewriting of the rules would be held sometime in December depending on exam schedules. Exact location and time to be determined. I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and a safe and successful calving season. Regards, Cheyenne Porter Secretary/reporter

Hard to believe another year has come and gone, and what a year it has been for the cattle industry. The fall has been busy for all breeders with the fall shows and numerous sales to attend. On behalf of the ALA and the Limousin Bonanza Group we would like to thank all who came out to the Bonanza Gold Show at Farmfair. There was a very strong set of cattle in the barns and lots of spectators in the stands evaluating the genetics. Congratulations to those who walked away with the Champion banners and represented us in the Supreme. Limousin were top contenders in the Alberta Supreme Show with Greenwood Young & Restless and RPY Payne’s Derby both placing in the top 5, and final results indicate they were runner up to taking top

prize. Thank you to all our sponsors and show officials for their contributions to the show. As you may have noticed the ALA did not hold an AGM this fall, instead the directors decided to move the AGM to the summer and hold it in conjunction with the ALA Field Day. Fall always seemed to get so busy with shows and sales that it was hard to find a date that was free, and this way we shouldn’t have to contend with bad weather! Please watch for more details in the next couple of months for more information on the 2015 ALA Field Day and AGM. We look forward to seeing you there! On behalf of the ALA board we wish you all Happy Holidays and a prosperous New Year! Carriann Johnson ALA Past President
