Homozygous Polled Bulls blacks & reds
At Highland Stock Farms, we do not use the term Double Polled. All double polled means is that both parents are polled and off spring have not been tested or the test was negative for homozygous. At Highland, our whole cow herd is tested (77.8% are homozygous polled) and we do not use herd bulls who are not homozygous polled. As a result in our March 17th “15th Annual Highland Bull Sale all bulls are homozygous polled with the exception of three.

hat a tremendous year the Limousin breed has had! 2017 will forever be remembered in Canadian Limousin history thanks to Greenwood Canadian Impact ET owned by Greenwood Limousin & Angus and Nordal Limousin & Angus winning the Supreme Bull title at both Farmfair International and Canadian Western Agribition! Thank you to these operations, and ALL of the Limousin breeders who have made the breed what it is today! The National Limousin Show and Sale at Farmfair International was another highlight of the fall. Thank you to the Alberta Limousin Association for hosting the National Show and Sale this year. Special thanks to all of the exhibitors who attended, consigners and buyers in the National Sale and to the many volunteers and sponsors who contributed to making this a successful event. The Limousin breed was well represented throughout the summer and fall at shows across the country. The breeding decisions, management, hard work and investment that has gone into taking these cattle out to shows to represent the Limousin breed is appreciated. Limousin excelled beyond the show ring this fall as Limousin calves topped the fall feeder sales consistently across the country, well above CanFax averages. We are tremendously pleased to assist commercial producers in marketing their Limousin influence calves – contact the CLA to learn more. If you have not done so already, now is the time to finish registering your 2017 calf crop and get your weaning weights recorded. For those of you scanning your cattle this winter please remember that weaning weights must be entered before ultrasound results can be recorded. In October, the CLA announced that we will be providing registry services for the Canadian Shorthorn Association beginning in 2018 when the Canadian Shorthorn Association transitions to DigitalBeef as their registry program. This arrangement is limited to registry services only, and the CLA
Bull sale season is just around the corner, and as always, the CLA is here to assist you with tools to help you have a successful sale. - The CLA General Manager will attend your sale at your request and your expense. If you would like for me to attend your bull sale this years, please contact me early. - Spring 2017 EPDs and breed averages will be available on DigitalBeef and on the CLA website in January. - Catalogue downloads may be requested from the CLA to obtain pedigree and EPD information on sale cattle in an Excel document. We require an Excel file with only the registration numbers, not the tattoos, of cattle in the sale. There is a $1.50/head charge for this service. - A mailing address list can be obtained from the CLA for $150, additionally the CLA can send an e-blast about your sale for $100 (you must provide all content/graphics). - The CLA is pleased to post your sale catalogue and information about your sale on the CLA website as well as on our Facebook page. Please send a link to your catalogue to tverbeek@ limousin.com to ensure it gets posted. - A gift certificate for Limousin branded CCIA tags can be given to your Limousin bull buyers to purchase a bag of tags at your expense as a thank you for purchasing a bull. You can download this off the CLA website or contact tverbeek@limousin. com to be sent a digital copy you can print. -The CLA has a Limousin CCIA tag advertisement that can be used in your bull sale catalogue or otherwise to explain and promote the tag program to your commercial buyers. We have also developed a “Tag Supporter” logo that can easily be added to your sale catalogue or website. Contact tverbeek@limousin. com to receive a digital copy of either. -Please remember that only Limousin cattle that contain between 37.5% and 75% Limousin blood and 25% to 62.5% Black Angus or Red Angus blood, may be called Lim-Flex. Cattle
that fall outside of these parameters should be described as Percentage Limousin in sales catalogues, not Lim-Flex. - Last but not least, please remember to complete DNA testing for animals that require it well in advance of your sale. Beginning in 2018 the following turnaround times will be anticipated: basic SNP parentage verification and Protoporphyria testing turnaround 10-15 days. Low and high density genotyping turnaround 25 days. Horned/polled and coat colour testing turnaround 20 days. Whole Herd Enrolment (WHE) Deadline January 15, 2018 Information concerning your 2018 WHE has now been mailed to all members. If you are an online user we remind you that you will not have received any paper forms for your inventory. Please remember that Whole Herd Enrolment is due no later than January 15, 2017. Online users may find instructions on how to post their inventory on our website under DigitalBeef. Please remember,NEW THIS YEAR if you have not completed your disposals/assessment by January 15th all assessment age females will be enrolled for the current year. Refunds are only given on enrolled heifers calving for the first time providing disposal information has been filed by the member both on the heifer and her calf. There will no longer be a $10/day late penalty, your penalty for being late will be that all assessment age females will be enrolled on January 16th and no refund will be given. CLA Office Closed for Christmas Holidays Please remember that the CLA office will be closed for the week between Christmas and New Year’s (December 23-January 1) to allow CLA staff a break to celebrate the season with their families. The CLA office will re-open on January 2nd to serve our membership. On behalf of myself, your CLA Board of Directors and staff, we thank you for your continued commitment to the Limousin breed in your local area, your province and nationally. Whether you are involved in the Limousin breed as a seedstock breeder, a commercial bull buyer, or are an up and coming junior, the CLA is here to provide the tools for you to be successful. We thank you all for the contribution you have made to the enthusiasm for the Limousin breed in Canada as we head into the New Year! Best wishes for a wonderful Christmas with family and friends and all the best in 2018!

Nouvelles du bureau de l’ACL
Q

Limousin r e i g n s
supreme
I
It has been a truly supreme fall show season for the Limousin breed! Greenwood Canadian Impact ET wrote a page in Limousin history by being the first Limousin bull to capture the Supreme Bull title in the Alberta Supreme at Farmfair International, and followed that up by winning Supreme Bull in the RBC Beef Supreme Challenge at Canadian Western Agribition – another first for the breed. Making the win even more historic, this was the first time Supreme Champions had been slapped in the new facilities at Canadian Western Agribition and it is only the second time that both
the Supreme Bull and Supreme Female from Farmfair have also received the same honours at Canadian Western Agribition.
For Impact, the journey to standing in that Supreme lineup and receiving the champion slap started many years prior. Greenwood is a name synonymous with the Limousin breed, from Bernard and Mona Payne to Scott and Jackie, and now Jayden and Jaxon, raising the great ones has always been a family affair. The Payne’s flushed their outstanding black Limousin cow Greenwood Wisteria Lane to EXLR Total Impact 054T with the hope to create more

females like Wisteria Lane to add to their program. Greenwood Wisteria Lane has since been Canadian Limousin Association Masterfeeds Show Dam of the Year for three consecutive years from 2015-2017. Total Impact is a heterozygous black bull who has sired many outstanding Limousin progeny. “We thought,” recalls Jackie, “if we ever got lucky enough to get a red bull he could really be something.” Impact was a standout right from the time he was a baby on pasture and showed successfully as a calf. “I remember the conversations we had around naming him,” Jackie says, “we knew he needed a really cool name.” Today, Canadian Impact could not be more appropriate handle for the sire who has made an Impact on not only the Limousin breed in Canada but also in Australia where his calves are in high demand.
In December 2015, Greenwood sold 50% interest and full possession of the then 11-month old Canadian Impact, who would become one of the highest selling Limousin bulls in Canada. A price of $87,000 was commanded between Nordal Limousin & Angus purchasing 50% interest and full possession, semen purchased by the Canadian Impact Syndicate, and Australian semen rights being sold to LaValla Limousin and McAlpin Livestock. The ground was breaking for what was yet to come.

“
This excitement of the first Limousin to win two major Supreme shows is for all Limousin people to enjoy and share the recognition of these accomplishments.
”
“Selling him in the Western Select Sale was one of those special moments you can’t really explain how you feel,” Jackie reminisces, “To have so many breeders excited to have a semen pack and then Robbie Garner stepping up to buy his walking rights at a record selling price and making Limousin history was extremely humbling.” Nordal Limousin & Angus, Simpson, Saskatchewan has been in the Limousin business since 1973 and has one of the longest running Limousin bull sales in Canada. Rob and Cindy Garner have three children, Justin, who is involved in the day to day cattle and grain operation management, and two daughters Christina and Jessica who have their own careers but also still reman involved in the operation. Niece Jody Garner and her son Carter are also integral parts of the Nordal operation, with Jody mainly being responsible for the cattle management. Garner’s nephew Jonas Short also owns his own Limousin herd. The family is steeped in Limousin tradition.
Rob recalls being impressed by Impact’s dam and grand dam as well as progeny from this cow family. “His pedigree and physical conformation made him interesting for a potential sire in our program,” Rob comments. However, when Rob signed the cheque this was not the only plan for Impact’s future. After the sale, Rob told Jackie, “Jack, you guys take him home, I have a dream. I want to stand in his Supreme photo in 2017.” Rob saw that he had a bright future not only in his breeding potential but also as an individual
that could represent the breed in a very impressive way in all breed competition. It was clear to many that Impact was a special one. Anthony Robertson of LaValla Limousin was in Canada in the fall of 2015 and says it was the best day of his life, standing in line for a beer with Scott and doing the Australian deal on Impact with a handshake. LaValla Limousin partnered with McAlpin Livestock, who had previously bought Australian semen rights on the high performing Greenwood Pld Zambuka, whose progeny were already excelling in Australia. Impact progeny are now hitting

the ground down under with great excitement and anticipation. The first daughter to sell in Australia cracked the auction block at $10,000 for Ian and Donna Robson of Flemington Limousin. Bede McAlpin recalls of Impact, “He just combined everything we were looking for thick made, clean fronted and structurally sound with a pedigree that we admired.”

Bill Wilson of Calgary Stockyards said of Impact, “The best Limousin bull I have ever seen if not one of the best beef bulls out there.”
he would gather for the Limousin breed should he win.
“He is one that makes you stop and take a second look,” commented Grant Barnett of Heartland Livestock in Moose Jaw, Saskatchean, “Lots of bulls will make you look, he is one that makes you stop.”
“I believe with all of the positive comments on him and the many impressive traits he possesses,” Rob says, “his two Supreme wins gives the breed the recognition that, yes, we have potential industry leading genetics in our breed that will work for the betterment of breeding a quality product.”
Rob says that the main reason they wanted to keep showing Impact was not only to promote him and both the Greenwood and Nordal programs but also for the exposure
“I think Impact is already leaving his stamp on the Limousin breed,” says Scott, “to have so many of his calves exhibited this fall is a testament to that. I hope making
”
As he matured, Impact gained many admirers well beyond the Limousin breed. His physical size is impressive and his flawlessly sound made structure while displaying a tremendous amount of muscle had many in Edmonton and Regina commenting on the ‘big red bull’ in the Limousin barn. His reach has extended beyond the show ring with cattle buyers commenting positively about the bull.

Jayden and Jaxon play a key role and are extremely vested in the Greenwood operation. They have always been by Scott and Jackie’s sides doing chores, calving, breeding and working with show cattle. “We are very proud of them,” beams Jackie, “they have an incredible work ethic, and are always striving to better themselves.” Impact is now at Nordal Limousin & Angus and where he will be used extensively in their purebred and commercial herds. “It felt a bit like dropping your kid off at college for the first time,” Jackie laughs, “the tears were real as we said farewell.”
history for the Limousin breed in the multi breed Supremes on a global level helps put Limousin into the daily thoughts of all breeds and is an opportunity to gain ground in the commercial market.” This fall Greenwood Canadian Impact’s merit as a sire was proven in his progeny that showed successfully across Canada. Of note, Impact sired Greenwood Electric Impact who stood behind his sire in the Limousin show at Canadian Western Agribition being named Reserve Grand Champion Limousin Bull. He also received many accolades in the Senior Bull Calf division at multiple shows this fall. At the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, Impact sired the Reserve Grand Champion Limousin Female, EXE Luvly 1E exhibited by Enright Farms, coming out of the Champion Intermediate Heifer Calf division. Additionally, Eden Meadows Farm claimed the Reserve Grand Champion Limousin Bull title at the Brandon Ag Ex with Greenwood Canadian Impact sired EMF Either Way 15E. “Seeing all the Impact calves in the show barns this fall was exciting,” Jackie exclaims, “It is one thing to be able to bring out your own breeding, but to see him obviously working for other breeders and breeding programs is extremely gratifying. That’s what we hope to do, that is what we all need to do as breeders. To have Impact win Regina and then his son win Reserve behind him was exactly what we are striving to do as breeders of quality seed stock, we need the bulls of today out breeding themselves for the cattle of the future. We can not get complacent; we have to keep striving to be the best.”
his family he is this giant, lovable creature. He and Jay have a bond like nothing I have ever seen. He knew we loved him, and he loved us right back. I think we all had giant lumps in our throats fitting him for Supreme Saturday, knowing it was his final dance.”
Jayden says of winning Supreme in Edmonton and Regina, “These two nights were the two most exciting and humbling experiences of my life. I will never be able to explain the feeling of accomplishing this as a family and team for our breed, our partners and Grandpa Bern.”
Rob’s goal is to have him breed many of the commercial cows so that the progeny can be fed out and performance, feed efficiency and carcass information gathered and evaluated. Rob has great appreciation for the whole Greenwood crew whose breeding, care and management took Impact to the top. Rob adds, “This excitement of the first Limousin to win two major Supreme shows is for all Limousin people to enjoy and share the recognition of these accomplishments.” The Payne’s have the following thanks, “Many thanks to our amazing families and our incredible show help (we consider them family if they are not by blood). We are so lucky to be surrounded by the absolute best people, our peers we learn from, grow with and share a passion for making the purebred cattle industry so desirable. We also need and want to thank the sponsors, volunteers and staff that give people like us a place to showcase our breeding programs. Robbie, we thank you for being an incredible partner. You stayed true to your decision to see Canadian Impact through to the end of his show career and this of course would have never happened without that decision.”
Impact has a special place in the hearts of the Payne family, “He has an incredible personality and he loves his family,” Jackie says, “When people came to tour cattle at the farm, we always showed them Impact, and he would snort around and make sure you took notice that he was the king, but for

There is no doubt that the Limousin breed owes a debt of thanks to all of the Limousin breeders who have come before and those who remain committed today who have made the breed what it is. “We share these Supreme wins with every Limousin breeder in Canada,” Jackie summarizes, “We are always proud to represent our breed the very best we can. Our advice to everyone is if you have big dreams, don’t give up on them. Do the work, put in the time and dreams do come true. Don’t quit before pay day. We have represented our breed so many times in Supreme in Lloydminster, Farmfair and Agribition and made Top 4, 5 and 10 and some could say we were never going to do it, to give up, but giving up makes us complacent and our breed loses out as much as we would have. Never ever give up and just keep working hard.” Thank you to these outstanding breeders for believing and investing in the Limousin breed and dedicating such effort to putting our breed in the forefront this fall and into history forever!
Dwayne Martin You guys are the blueprint for everything that is good about this business and are a shining example of why I love this business so much and want to raise my family in it. Thank you for letting me be part of this ride and congratulations to you all!

CLA PRESIDENT’S REPORT by By Erin Kishkan CLA President
S
easons Greetings from your CLA board of Directors! As I sit here and reflect upon the happenings of this past year, I can’t help but be thankful. There are so many things to be thankful for especially being a part of a breed and an industry full of so many positive, hardworking, and dedicated people. Since the start of my presidency in July, a couple exciting things have happened for our Association that I am very proud of. In October the CLA announced our agreement with the Canadian Shorthorn Association to take
on their registry work. This partnership was several months in the making, and stands to be a substantial income source for the CLA. A huge thank you to your CLA staff and board of directors who worked countless hours to make this come to fruition. I am fully confident in our staff’s ability to provide the same first class service to the CSA as they do for our own members. Having said that, please be patient in the first quarter of 2018 as there will undoubtedly be a bit of a transition period as our staff serves both associations. Secondly, I want to express huge congratulations to all the exhibitors who showcased our breed throughout the fall show season. I couldn’t be more proud of our breeders right now and their passion and dedication to our breed is unwavering. Limousin was in the spotlight several times this fall season, with the highlights being
crowned Supreme Champion Bull over all breeds at Farmfair International and the prestigious RBC Beef Supreme Challenge this past month. I truly believe our breed is perfectly positioned to capitalize on this showring success and bring the excitement to the commercial sector. People all over this industry are taking notice of “Today’s Limousin” and I only have you, the breeders, to thank for that. It truly starts with each one of you and your passion for constantly and continually improving your genetics using your expertise and the tools that are provided for you. Lets ride this wave of excitement for the next decade and when the calls for bulls start coming in – will you be ready?? Take care and have a fantastic holiday season and successful calving. Cheers! Respectfully yours, Erin Kishkan

s 2017 draws to a close, we’re starting to think about what we’ve accomplished and also where we want to be headed in 2018. We hope this year’s previous Limousin Voice articles on genomics in the beef industry have provided some insight of the history of animal breeding, the necessity of defining breeding goals, the importance of record keeping, and the types of tests that are available for use. As for communicating directly to your buyers, what information do they need to make informed choices, now? We’ve distilled down a ‘genomics overview’ into one page, that is free to use and distribute (see the next page). Overall, there are seven main messages for you and your customers to take home, and hopefully take to the bank: 1. Variations in DNA can be linked to heritable production and carcass traits.
2. Genotyping looks at specific regions in the DNA. The locations are chosen based on research that link regions to expressed traits that are important for production and performance traits. 3. gEPDs (genomically enhanced EPDs) are interpreted in the exact same way as regular EPDs. The only difference is that gEPDs make use of known pedigree, performance and genomic information about an animal, its progeny and other relatives. It is the best estimate of an animal’s genetic worth as a parent. 4. When interpreting EPDs and gEPDs consider accuracies in your decision. Accuracies quickly tell you the status of an animal; and the higher the value, the more confidence you can place in getting the result. 5. DNA is only part of the story. The environment (e.g., heat or cold stress) and management (e.g., feed, vaccines, etc.) of your animals play large roles in performance and production.
7. Does it work? Yes – genomics increases the accuracies of EPDs and allows you to assess traditionally hard-to-measure traits. Getting the information into the hands of your buyers is a powerful tool, but often difficult to achieve. There are layers of information to consider and there are historic methods that might seem to compete with the new technologies of today. In reality, the old and new technologies combine beautifully to give us a more defined picture of what we need to see. In 2018, why not give your customers the gift of ‘HD’ – genomics as the high definition of information – a clear picture of what they are purchasing. And whether it’s your business on the line or theirs, information and accuracy are what count towards your bottom line. Wishing you and your customers a peaceful and happy holiday season and a prosperous 2018.
6. Genomics can be used by commercial producers in all the same ways as for seedstock producers, including: parentage testing, controlling inbreeding / optimizing hybrid vigour, testing for lethal recessives, and more.

Genomics - How it works Genomics is the study of an organism’s DNA sequence (i.e., the genome), and includes the analysis of the relationship between genetics and traits. Bovine DNA is approximately 99% identical from animal to animal. Small differences, known as ‘variants’ (aka, SNPs), make the bull, cow, or calf unique. Variations in the DNA sequences of animals can affect how they perform, develop diseases, respond to their environment (e.g., pathogens), and management (e.g., vaccines). DNA is passed from parents to offspring, and can be linked to certain heritable production and carcass traits, such as birth weight, lean meat yield, and more. Tissue, blood, and hair roots all contain DNA, which is extracted and processed on a genotyping chip that reads thousands of variants in the bovine genome. Genotyping looks at specific regions in the DNA. The locations are chosen based on well-established research that links regions to expressed traits.

The results With regular EPDs many offspring are needed before the accuracy of prediction is high enough to make strong breeding decisions. With genomics the accuracy can be higher much earlier in life, and genetic progress made more quickly. Accuracies quickly tell you the status of an animal; and the higher the value, the more confidence you can place in getting the result. ‘% Rank’ tells you where the animal ranks per trait as compared to the breed average.
gEPDs (genomically enhanced EPDs) are interpreted in the exact same way as regular EPDs. The only difference is that gEPDs make use of known pedigree, performance and genomic information about an animal, its progeny and other relatives - it is the best estimate of an animal’s genetic worth as a parent. Genomics can be used by commercial producers in all the same ways as for seedstock producers, including: parentage testing, controlling inbreeding / optimizing hybrid vigour, testing for lethal recessives, and more. If you’re interested in learning more about using gEPDs on your operation, contact your bull producer, the Canadian Limousin Association, or Livestock Gentec (det@ualberta.ca / www.livestockgentec.com). 29

cjla GREETINGS CJLA Scholarships and Australia Exchange Announced The Canadian Junior Limousin Association
is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2017 Scholarships and Australia Travel Opportunity. We had a record number of applicants for our scholarships this year which made choosing the recipients a difficult task. Applicants were asked to answer the question, Why did you choose the Limousin breed? For many of our juniors the Limousin breed is part of their family history and was a natural choice. Junior’s also noted the docility and muscling ability as characteristics that attracted them to the breed. Angus Smyth of Roblin, Manitoba was awarded a $500 CJLA Scholarship. Angus along with his family operate Jaymarandy Limousin. He also has a small number of purebred Limousin registered under his own prefix. Angus uses an AI program for the first cycle on all cows and then turns them out with Limousin bulls. Angus has been on the CJLA board for 2 years and the MJLA for 9 years. He enjoys meeting new people within the Limousin breed and having an opportunity to have a voice in the Limousin community. Angus is currently completing grade 12 and plans to attend a college in the United States to take welding and compete on a livestock judging team. Samantha Kennedy of Omeemee, Ontario was awarded a $500 Scholarship. Samantha, with her family operate Crown Hill Acres. They started breeding and showing Limousin animals in 2015. The cow calf operation consists of mostly purebred animals with a few purebred Angus used for LimFlex. She is a first year student at the University of Guelph in the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture program looking to major in Animal Science. Samantha is the President of the Canadian Junior Limousin Association. She enjoys being on the Board of Directors and making connections with other Limousin breeders from across the country. Nolan McLarty of West Lorne, Ontario was awarded a $250 CJLA Scholarship. Nolan is the son of Tom and June McLarty. He was raised on the family farm Crinan Farms. He is currently doing a fifth year at West Elgin Secondary school and hopes to continue his love for agriculture by attending post secondary in the agricultural business sector. Nolan has been apart of 4-H for 8 years and has been showing Limousin cattle for 6 years. He started showing purebred steers for two years and has shown heifers since. Nolan’s purebred Limousin herd is mostly built up of past show heifers. Nolan would like to keep expanding his herd and being involved with the Canadian Limousin Association.
Amanda Scott of Virden, Manitoba was awarded a $250 CJLA Scholarship. Amanda is a Grade 12 student at Virden Collegiate, she has started the application process to attend Lakeland College in Vermillion, Alberta to study Agribusiness. Amanda lives in Virden, but her cattle are kept at her Uncle’s farm at Pipestone, Manitoba - Poplarview Stock Farm. Amanda is a member of the Lenore 4-H Beef Club with this being her 7th year. The last couple of years Amanda has shown her heifers at a couple of local town fairs, and attended Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup. Showing at the Canadian National Show in 2016 and the Impact Show in 2017 were real highlights for Amanda. When Amanda is not at the farm she enjoys being on the ice as a member of Wheat City ConnXion Synchronized Skating team. Amanda thanks the CJLA for choosing her entry and congratulates Samantha, Angus and Nolan on their wins. The Canadian Junior Limousin Association also offers the opportunity for juniors to participate in an exchange program with Austraila each year. Junior’s must submit an application outlining their involvement in the Limousin breed, their experience working with cattle and what they hope to gain from the trip. Megan Wynn of Belmont, Nova Scotia was awarded the Australia Exchange for 2018. She will be travelling to Australia in August to attend the Ekka Royal Queensland Show. Megan was first introduced to the Limousin breed by her 4-H Beef Leader Joe Cooper. Showing with Balamore Farms has taken her from her local 4-H Achievement Day to show as far away as the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. She is currently a Junior Leader in her 4-H club and enjoys sharing her knowledge and passion with the younger members. She is also the secretary of the Maritime Junior Limousin Association and will be involved in planning the 2018 Canadian Junior Limousin Impact Show. Megan is a third year student at the Dalhousie University Agricultural Campus completing a Bachelor of Science Degree majoring in Animal Science. “My love for traveling and my interest in beef are why I applied. I am really looking forward to learning about the Limousin breed from others, in a different part of the world. It ties in both traveling and cattle, which are two things I have a very strong passion for,” said Megan.
Merry Christmas from the CJLA As the fall show season has come to an end, we can reflect on this past year and look forward to what next year has to offer. Thank you to all of those who supported the CJLA Clothing ticket sales at the National Sale at Farmfair. We are very appreciative of your support and the money from the tickets will be going towards the 2018 Impact Show clothing and prizes. There are tickets still available for sale until we make the draw in the spring. Please feel free to contact any one of the CJLA board members if you did not have the chance to buy a ticket. Congratulations to our 2017 scholarship recipients, Angus Smyth (MB), Samantha Kennedy (ON), Amanda Scott (MB) and Nolan McLarty (ON). Also,a special congratulations to Megan Wynn of Belmont, Nova Scotia on being selected to travel to Australia in August 2018 to participate in the EKKA Royal Queensland Show. The CJLA would like to sincerely thank Bohrson Marketing and Haystack Acres for purchasing the CJLA heifer calf, CJLA Echo 1E, for $3,000. Special thanks also go to Payne Livestock for being runner up bidder. The heifer was sold on December 12, 2017 through the B Bar Cattle Bull & Female Sale in Saskatoon, SK and all proceeds from the sale of the heifer are going to the Canadian Junior Limousin Association. Plans are well underway for 2018 and the CJLA board is excited to be participating in the Ontario Commercial Cattle Tour organized by Tim and Lois Andrew in January. We will be taking part in the tour as well as holding our annual in person CJLA meeting. We are also looking forward to the 2018 Impact Show being held in Great Village, Nova Scotia from August 1st to 4th. Just a note for juniors wishing to participate that trucking from out of province will be available and cattle will be available for juniors to borrow as well. For more details please don’t hesitate to contact out CJLA Coordinator, Laura Ecklund. With everything to be thankful for this year and to look forward to next year, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and all the best in the new year! Naomi Best CJLA Press Reporter

2017 CJLA Scholarship winners We would like to take this time to congratulate the recipients of this year’s CJLA scholarships and next year’s Australian/ Canadian Limousin Youth Exchange. A big congratulations to the following five deserving Winners! The 2017 CJLA Scholarship Recipients are... Angus Smyth Manitoba Why I chose Limousin? The Limousin breed is something that I have been raised in. What makes the Limousin breed stand out is their characteristics. More specifically the shape and expression in terms of muscle that they produce. Another trait that appeals to me is their temperament which in the past has been falsely accused for being “high strung” which is inaccurate. Even though the breed is becoming smaller, one thing that I know is tough times are short, but tough people last longer. This is something that reminds me that even if I hit a rough spot it will only be for a short time. In closing the breed has been something that I am proud of because it has taught me to believe in something. Amanda Scott Manitoba Why I have chosen the Limousin breed, well it all started long before I was born. In 1970, Grandpa Lloyd Atchison started to AI his Angus cows to a Limousin sire. My grandparents imported a heifer from France in 1974, her name was Irma. One of her offspring was a bull calf called Eddy and he was sold at the Grand National Sale in Winnipeg in 1976 for $4,600 to St. Pierre, South Dakota. Irma also produced a heifer calf named Hannah, she remained at Poplarview Stock Farm and produced off spring for many years. Poplarview Stock Farm continued building their Limousin herd and the biggest number was 300 Limousin and Limousin cross on the farm. Grandpa Lloyd was one of the founding members on the Manitoba Limousin Association, was the president for a term and was a director on the Canadian Limousin Board. My grandma Joan Atchison, was a member of the Manitoba Limouselle Association and helped make the hooked rug wall hanging that was auctioned at the World Limousin Congress at the Calgary Stampede in 1982. I have been a member of the Lenore 4-H Beef club for 6 years and have shown a Limousin steer every year. I showed Poplarview raised steers for the first couple
of years, but the calving season got pushed back at the farm and I found it too hard to finish the younger steers. I then started to buy steers from Amaglen Limousin, the older steers were easier to achieve a finished weight for show day in July. When the National Limousin show was being held at Ag Ex in Brandon,MB in October 2016, I wanted to show at it, so my journey began. To show at the National Show I had to own a registered animal and be a member of the Manitoba and Canadian Junior Limousin Associations. I started reading information about the Associations and filling out forms to become a member of both. I was required to have a farm name to which I would have cattle registered under. So, I thought about what name I should pick, my Uncle Trevor Atchison has helped me out a lot with my 4-H animals, has employed me for the last few summers so I could pursue my love of farming and helped me get my first heifer. I thought Poplarview Livestock would be a proud name for me. Uncle Trevor is the 4th generation on the family farm - Poplarview Stock Farm and was also a member of the Manitoba Limousin Association. So, it all began – the forms were filled out and the membership fees were paid, and I was in the market for a registered purebred female. I returned to Amaglen Limousin and purchased Amaglen Charity. Now I was set, I was a member of both Associations and had a registered heifer - I was ready! My dream became reality I showed Charity at the National Limousin Show. Then it was announced that the Canadian Junior Impact Show was being held in Portage, MB. I attended the MJLA meeting in January 2017, became the reporter for the MJLA. It all started again, I purchased another heifer from Amaglen Limousin- Amaglen Diva. I attended the Impact Show and had a great time and met lots of fellow MJLA and CJLA members. So, the question was asked Why I have chosen the Limousin breed, this breed has provided a living and livelihood for my family for four decades. My Grandparents were awarded the Manitoba Limousin Association Ambassador Award in 2013. My uncle Trevor is now raising his family on the family farm with Limousin cross cattle, and I have had lots of great experiences showing Limousin cattle and have met a lot of great people. So that is why I have chosen the Limousin breed, it is just part of our family! Samantha Kennedy Ontario When I became very involved in showing cattle through 4-H I was asked to show cattle for a local Limousin
breeder that my father had bought some heifers from. From attending the provincial show with them to the Royal Winter Fair, to CJLA impact Show, to Canadian Western Agribition, I immediately knew that the Limousin breed and people involved with it would become a large part of my life. The Limousin breed has since provided so much for me as a junior member because I have been so fortunate to have participated in so many junior Limousin events and have made so many connections with other breeders from Nova Scotia to Alberta to Saskatchewan. I have had the opportunity to travel out west numerous times for the national junior show and I have been able to connect with other juniors I will know for the rest of my life. My participation in the national show and OJLA and CJLA boards has fueled a passion to get as many juniors involved in the Limousin breed as I can because of how unique of a breed it is. My past experiences with junior events and activities has only encouraged me to pursue more involvement as I carry so much pride in the Limousin breed and its junior program in Canada. Not only am I proud of the junior programs, shows and opportunities in the Limousin breed, I am proud of the breed itself. I chose the Limousin breed because of it’s unique qualities when compared to other breeds of cattle and how much they have been developed by breeders I am lucky to know personally. The Limousin community is such a small and hospitable community, our family felt so welcomed when we became involved at sales and shows. I also know that when I raise my own purebred Limousin cattle one day they will be profitable as they are for my family with high yields and I believe that any Limousin influenced animal will outstand in any cattle market or breeding program, and I will argue it any day. With my involvement in the breeding of our own Limousin cattle and my involvement within junior programs in the breed, I know the breed will always be my first choice and will always be the best. I chose Limousin because it has, and always will, provide me with good quality people, opportunities, and finally, cattle. Nolan Mclarty Ontario I run a small but mighty herd that I have slowly been growing over the past few years. I have chosen the Limousin breed as it delivers cattle that will fit into any program and produces a carcass that pays. In my first years of 4-H I showed purebred Limousin steers, I purchased 31

from a local purebred breeder. Although they weren’t your flashy show steers, they still could compete as they showed the true traits everyone wants in a steer. A steer that has tons of muscle, frame, mass and one that will hang an 800+ lbs carcass. Showing these steers made me realize this breed puts out a carcass incomparable to any other breed. I knew from then on, I wanted to have purebreds at home to use and to be able to sell breeding stock. The Limousin breed is such a diverse breed there is a bull or female for any program. You can have either a heifer bull or a cow bull that still put up a huge carcass. As beef breeders, we all have the same goal to produce good quality meat. The Limousin breed does this and this is why I have chosen the Limousin breed. I have also chosen this breed as it is a strong way to meet good people in the industry.
CJLA Australian/Canadian Limousin Youth Exchange Recipient Megan Wynn Nova Scotia I am currently a third-year student at Dalhousie University, Agriculture Campus; completing a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Animal Science, however the field of agriculture was a hidden passion of mine until the age of 11. It was at this time that I first joined my local 4-H club. As an animal lover, there was something intriguing about watching members lead around a 1000+ pound animal with such grace and power, and this interest made me join the beef project. The beef leader, Joe Cooper, took me in as an inexperienced keen member and introduced me to the Limousin breed. My first heifer was an intermediate red Limousin, and my first show was at our clubs’ 4-H Achievement Day. Then we showed at the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition and following that was Provincial 4-H Pro Show, and while I did not win in my first year, it gave me the motivation to dedicate myself to the project and improve. Since then I have had the chance to work with numerous heifers and have won both showmanship and conformation classes which has shown me that hard work does pay off. As I continue to show from Balamore Farm Ltd., they also continue to expand my experiences with showing in open beef shows around the Maritimes Provinces, as well as making the journey to Toronto at The Royal Winter Fair. As a senior 4-H member, and the oldest within my 4-H club, I have taken on the role of being Junior Leader for the beef project for our club for the past few years, which has been a great opportunity to share my knowledge with younger members who have the same
passion and interest as myself. This year I am sitting on the Maritime Junior Limousin Association board as Secretary, and will be helping in planning the 2018 Canadian Junior Limousin Association Impact Show. To this day, my beef leader Joe, continues to not only expand my knowledge within the beef industry, but also continues to inspire me to pursue a career in this field. Over the years of being in the beef project and showing Limousin cattle, I have fallen in love with the animals as well as the people, which has developed my passion for this industry. While I do not currently own any cattle, my plans for the future definitely involve them. I plan on finishing my degree in Animal Science, and once I have a stable income working in a job within the agricultural field, I plan on starting my own Limousin herd. I hope to be able to provide a similar environment as Joe has provided me, and see myself becoming a 4-H beef leader so that I can share my knowledge and passion with children, which hopefully will give rise to an interest for the industry in the next generation. If I were to receive this scholarship it would be a life-changing experience. Not only would I have the opportunity to gain knowledge of the beef industry on a global level, but it would also further my education within the field of agriculture. The experiences and information I would gain on this trip would be extremely beneficial to my future, but I would also be able share what I learned while in Australia with my local 4-H club, allowing them to also benefit from the experiences that I had the opportunity to partake in. I may also learn things that I could share with my leader Joe; that he may be able to implement into his beef operation, and that I would be able to use once I have my own herd. As well, while I know I want to work in the agricultural field I have not decided with what specifically, however I may experience things while on this trip that could help me in deciding what I want to do for the rest of my life. ************************************ Interested in becoming a CJLA Member?

FUTURE OF THE BREED NORFOLK CATTLE, BRYAN AND DANA BONNEY by Tessa Verbeek
having their first child, they both realized that they had a passion for agriculture and farm life and were determined to raise a family in that environment. They dove right in, starting out with a few purebred Limousin cows, forty commercial Angus/Limousin cross cows and two bulls. This was the beginning of Norfolk Cattle. Their daughter Addison, 6, and son Beau, 4, love the farm.
F
irst generation cattle producers are a rarity in today’s beef industry, however, a young couple from Ontario are bucking the trend and despite neither having grown up on a cattle farm, Bryan and Dana Bonney have set up a first-class cattle operation in southwest Ontario near Tillsonburg. They appreciate the merits of the Limousin breed and have chosen to raise Limousn, along with a mix of purebred Angus, fullblood Simmental and commercial cattle. Bryan grew up on a Standardbred farm in Beachville, Ontario. After graduating high school, he worked for a hydraulic equipment manufacturer. He also lived and worked at Gopher Dunes motocross tracks in Courtland, Ontario. This endeavour fed into his interest in motocross racing and he enjoyed both the physical work and the seat time in heavy machinery. In his late 20’s, Bryan began working at Trackless Vehicles Ltd. for Dana’s father, who manufactures municipal tractors. It was here that
Bryan met Dana. Dana had grown up in Courtland, Ontario. After graduating high school, she then graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a bachelor of Management and Organizational Studies. Immediately after that, she went back to work at her families’ manufacturing business. After inheriting some land and
“They are determined to help – whether it be sweeping feed into the bunks, feeding the barn cats, handing us supplies if we have to pull a calf, or just coming along for a tractor ride,” says Dana, “Growing up on a farm is teaching them good work ethic and it’s also toughening them up for the real world.” When they first started out, Bryan and Dana did not have a lifetime of knowledge to draw upon when it came to management and feeding of their herd. They asked knowledgeable people, read books and researched online to educate themselves, but they

canfax market summary
By Brian Perillat Manager / Senior Analyst CanFax
The 2017 cattle market can be summarized as having larger cattle numbers, more beef production, and higher prices; throw in good profitability through the supply chain, and it is certainly a good news story. The overall market tone has been positive, and the Canadian cattle market has performed very well relative to the US market. Alberta cull-cow prices have been stronger than the US virtually all year, and despite the fact that western Canadian feed costs have risen dramatically relative to the US, there have been very few feeder exports, and even imports of US feeder cattle. This shift in feeder trade points to a very competitive Canadian feeder market as prices have also been premium to the US. The US cattle herd has had a major expansion over the past 3 years, and this will lead to continued larger production in at least the next two to three years. Beef production hit its low in 2015, and by 2018 it is expected to increase 16.5%, a 4 billion pound increase. The larger production has been met with increased exports, and not only have the volume of exports increased, the price has also increased at the same time which has been very supportive to the North American cattle and beef markets. The Canadian cow herd has remained relatively flat around 3.8 million beef cows for the last four years. Although the herd has not grown, beef production in 2018 could increase for the third consecutive year as more cattle are fed and processed in Canada. The Canadian cow herd is not expected to show much growth, as current cow marketings are near steady with a year ago, and heifer retention has shown only a marginal increase. If good growing conditions were to materialize, and feed supplies were to increase next year, this could encourage some herd growth.
second half of the year. The current futures markets are pointing to higher prices next summer despite these larger supplies. Strong demand could support the higher prices, but there is certainly some risk in the market place heading later into 2018 as feedlot break-evens are well above the prices seen in the summer of 2017. In addition to watching how cattle supply and demand factors unfold, other key factors to watch will be the Canadian dollar. A dollar over 80 cents would add further price risk to the Canadian market, while a lower dollar would be supportive. Feed costs are always a key driver on calf and feeder prices, and basis levels between Canada and the US can have a big impact on Canadian prices and profitability. As I often do, I am including a sensitivity table in regard to projected calf prices, with varying levels for Live cattle futures and the Canadian dollar. While markets have been trending higher in the fall of 2017, that can change, and this table can be used as a guide for potential calf prices as the market changes. This table projects prices for a 550 lb steer calf, assuming $1/lb cost of gain at the feedlot, and a fed cash to futures basis of -7.

The stage is set for 2018, the growing cattle herd and significantly more cattle put on feed this fall will lead to increased beef supplies, especially in the 38

CcA PRESIDENT’S REPORT as it appears the market access elements of the original TPP12 agreement will remain intact; however, we do know that nothing is guaranteed until the negotiations are complete, and the agreement is signed. The CCA will follow-up with officials and politicians to ensure the remaining work and negotiations to bring this new agreement into effect are undertaken as expeditiously as possible.
T
he last months of 2017 have been busy for the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA). At round 5 of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) renegotiations in Mexico City in November, the office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) published a revision to its negotiating objectives originally published in July. The CCA reviewed the new document and found that overall there appears to be little substantive difference between the revision and original document. USTR is required to provide Congress with a negotiations update every four months, leaving the CCA to surmise that perhaps the revised document is part of fulfilling this obligation. At a high level, there appears to be little left for negotiators to discuss, with the U.S. having tabled several overarching proposals that have been rejected as unacceptable by Canada and Mexico. With the U.S. giving the appearance of revising its negotiating objectives, this could provide some fodder for discussion to determine if there is indeed any substantive re-positioning, although it seems unlikely that there is. At a more technical level, there is a good faith effort being undertaken to improve conditions for trading agriculture products between Canada and the U.S. Both sides appear to recognize that there are inefficiencies in how the border operates currently and that both sides can benefit from adoption of new procedures. Progress was made at the Ministerial meeting of the 11 Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) countries in Vietnam. Talks will continue under the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). This is potentially good news for beef producers,
CCA travelled to Beijing as part of Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lawrence MacAulay’s agricultural trade mission to China. China is an important market for Canadian beef, even with beef exports currently limited to frozen boneless beef, and the bone-in access approved in principle last year still subject to establishing the documentation requirements. Efforts to expand access to Canadian fresh-chilled beef, and to formalize the documentation to enable bone-in beef trade were the focus of our participation on the mission. I would like to commend the Government of Canada for revisiting the changes outlined in its Tax Planning Using Private Corporations proposal. The amendments to the proposed tax plan are a step in right direction. The CCA raised producers’ concerns about the initial proposed changes with lawmakers in Ottawa as, once implemented, would have had a significant negative impact on cattle producers and farm families across Canada. The recent tax relief measures for cattle producers affected by bovine tuberculosis (bTB) and drought, flood or excess moisture conditions, are also appreciated. These measures will help producers affected by the bTB investigation that= began in September 2016 to make more optimal herd repopulation decisions, and eligible producers forced to sell part of their breeding herd due to extreme weather to defer a portion of sale proceeds to the following year to partially offset the cost of reacquiring breeding stock.
has its own pan-Canadian framework to address AMR including some changes to how livestock producers can access antimicrobials. These changes ensure that the antimicrobial products we have now continue to be effective into the future. Of note to Canadian beef producers is a change to the own use importation (OUI) process that came into effect on November 13, 2017. Only those products registered on “List B,” published on the Health Canada website are now permitted for OUI. Additional changes coming will see claims for growth promotion dropped from labels of medically important antimicrobials used in livestock production, and access to all Category I, II, and III antimicrobials restricted to prescription only effective December 1, 2018. This will mean all livestock producers will require a valid Veterinary-Client-Patient Relationship to obtain the necessary prescription to access these antimicrobials. Canada’s beef industry has an enviable track record of prudent and judicious use of veterinary antimicrobials. The responsible use of antibiotics is a necessary component of sustainable and humane beef production, which requires that cattle are well cared for and treated when necessary. However, the CCA recognizes that all stakeholders in Canada’s human and animal health systems must play a role in minimizing AMR development. These include doctors, hospitals, and patients on the human side; veterinarians, producers and animal care givers on the livestock side. Our mutual goal is to ensure that the medicines we currently have, and new ones in the future, will be effective when used properly. Here’s wishing you a safe, restful and joyous holiday season with your loved ones, and a happy new year.
Until next time, Dan Darling CCA President
We’re making producers aware of important changes to how they can access antimicrobials, related to actions being taken around the world on reducing the risk of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Canada

he Masterfeeds Show Cattle of the Year Awards recognize the top show bull, top show female, top show sire and top show dam for that year as determined by a point system based on placings at qualifying shows. In order to qualify for points a show must have a minimum of 30 head of Limousin cattle. In addition, Limousin animals who win a Supreme Champion title at a show with a minimum of 30 head of cattle of any breed receive additional points. The Canadian Limousin Association and our members sincerely thank Masterfeeds for their support of this program! Congratulations and thank you to all Limousin breeders who invested the time and resources into showing their cattle this year. You represented the breed very well at shows across the country, and your efforts shine a very positive light on the Limousin breed, for which everyone benefits.

CLifford stANtoN memoriAL AWArd Cliff Stanton, a friend of the Ontario Limousin industry for the past 40 years, passed away this past summer. Cliff grew up with Shorthorn cattle and married Kay Stanton, who also owned Shorthorn cattle. Kay Stanton was the first female winner of the Queen’s Guinness in 1954. Cliff bought his first Limousin cattle in 1977 at the Greenfields Sale in Kitchener. While his eye for good cattle was developed over many years and many breeds, his interest in Limousin cattle was always strong and most recently exhibited by his

perfect attendance at the Limousin show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair for the past 10 years. In memory of Cliff, his family has made a donation to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair that will enable a trophy and financial prize of $2,500 each to be awarded to both the Grand Champion Limousin Bull and Grand Champion Limousin Female at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair for the next 20 years. Sincere thanks to the Stanton family for this generous donation in memory of Cliff.

interesting to acquire real world data on this exceptional group of feeders from operations across Alberta.
With the fall feeder calf run drawing to a close, we wold like to thank producers and those auction markets who kindly sent in results on Limousin calves. Our thanks to Dryland Cattle Trading of Veteran, Alberta on submitting the exceptional result that will be highlighted in our current national advertising campaign.
Our Ontario Commercial tour group is eagerly anticipating our trip in early January 2018. The group looks forward to stops at St. Helens Packers, Cargill, Slemens Brewery, OLEX, Ontario Cattle Feeders Convention, Chaffe Beef Farms, Legge Beef, Smart Limousin Farm, Schaus Land and Cattle, Charcoal Steak House and Norpac Beef. Thanks to these Limousin supporters for opening their operations to us.
The Canadian Limousin Steer Challenge has begun with 21 steers being assembled at Kunz Feeders in Biesker, Alberta. It will be very
the trip. We are delighted that they are embracing this opportunity to understand why our breed is so valued in the most competitive protein market in the nation. As chair of this committee I am always open to discussion for ways to promote and expand the Limousin story. Please contact me at 403-854-6335. I look forward to the exchange. British columbia news Seasons Greetings from the Pacific! Things have returned to a relative state of normalcy now that we are getting some cooler weather and the fires are officially out. Pretty quiet on the BC Limousin front, but there are some breeders that are getting geared up for some exciting events this spring. Watch for more details on the 2nd Annual BC Bull Pen Show taking place in Prince George, BC in early February. This is a unique event for our area and was small in the inaugural year, but is shaping up to be a great event in 2018. There will also be an excellent offer of yearling and two
year old bulls on offer in the 29th Annual Peace Country Limousin Breeders Sale in early April. This is the only all Limo bull sale in BC and will have some of the best bulls BC has to offer. That is all from this side of the Rockies. Have a great holiday season and a prosperous calving season! Erin Kishkan
Alberta news Greetings from Alberta - Winter has rooted itself in parts of central and most of Northern Alberta while southern parts of the province are void of snow and lack of moisture to start the freeze up. We have cleared our way through the fall sale season hosting four limo influenced sales throughout the province in Clyde, Ponoka, Stettler and Veteran. Reports stated that we saw an increase in pricing ranging from 0.15 - 0.30 over and above other breeds sold that day. We held the 2017 National show and sale this year at Farmfair, where we saw 95 head and 16 exhibitors attend. A big thanks goes out to Billy Elmhirst for adjudicating our show and T Bar C for their work with the national sale.
Limousin on their Grand Champion victories. This year marked a pivotal moment for the Limousin breed as Greenwood Limousin Canadian Impact ET went on to win Supreme at Farmfair and a few short weeks later took home the supreme win in Regina. Thank you to all the consignors and exhibitors that made this year’s sale and show such a complete success. We will have our booth setup in Medicine Hat on December 15 - 16, be sure to stop by for a coffee! Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Thank you to Eden Meadows and JYF Limousin from Saskatchewan for exhibiting at Ag-Ex. Thank you to all sponsors and volunteers for their support at Ag-Ex. Ontario news Fall is pretty much behind us now as we approach the shortest days of the year. It is December 1st as I am writing this news and there is still a significant amount of corn to come off in Ontario and even still some soybeans. The corn crop here in Ontario has been some of the highest yields ever seen. Stocker prices this fall have been relatively strong in spite of lower fed cattle prices. I hope that this is a sign for higher fed cattle prices moving into 2018. Strong prices in the Fall for stockers will help with bull prices next Spring to our seed stock producers. Ontario Limousin breeders had two great shows this fall, our Provincial Show in Markham, and the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto. Both shows had well over one hundred head competing. Quality was excellent. Ontario has two of the largest shows in North America. The 2018 Day Planner will be hitting mailboxes soon. This is the OLA’s largest fund raiser for the year. This professional day planner is great for members who advertise and a great resource for cattlemen to find Purebred Limousin Producers to purchase quality Limousin seed stock from. Ontario Juniors also participated with their own
shows at Markham and Toronto, and boy what a great group they are. The OLA is very fortunate to have a great group of Juniors and we know our Association will be vibrant for many years to come. The OJLA presented Ontario 4-H members who show a Limousin or Limousin influenced calf with a breed award. There were over 100 4-Hers that showed Limousin cattle this year. I just heard today that Angus Campbell of Beldoon Limousin passed away. Angus was one of the pioneers that brought Limousin cattle to Canada nearly 50 years ago. Angus Campbell had continued to come out to cattle events and was a great promoter of the Limousin breed, even in the last few years. Angus will be missed by his Limousin friends. The OLA will be having our annual meeting coming up in the New Year and will be making plans for the 2018 year. On behalf of the Ontario Limousin Association, I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Maritime news The Maritime Limousin Association is delighted that Megan Wynn from Belmont, Nova Scotia, was selected as the 2018 recipient of the Australian/Canadian Limousin Youth Exchange program. She will travel to Australia in August to work with Limousin cattle and participate in the Ekka Royal Queensland Cattle Show. A worthy candidate, Megan is a strong supporter of our breed and will do an excellent job of representing us in Australia. For the first time in a number of years, the Royal Winter Fair had a number of Atlantic Canada cattle participate in the Junior and Open Show. Jesse Thorne from New Brunswick with Othberg’s Exquisite came second in his heat and was pulled back for the top 10. Balamore Farms brought ten of their juniors to show in the open show and as well, some stayed on for the Junior Limousin show the following Monday. Balamore Double Take 664D, sired by PLNS Polled Bohemian won the Junior Yearling Heifer Division, being shown by William Cooper of Balamore Farms. Also participating at the Royal with Balamore cattle were Maritime Limousin Junior Members; Sidney Patton, Camryn Patton, Ashley Higgins, Megan Wynn, Emily Smith, Eryn Lorraine, Gillian Lorraine, Ian Kittilsen, Taylor Stewart and William Cooper.
Closer to home, the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition had four exhibitors showing 14 head. The top bull was Balamore Endeavor, a RLF Yardly son bred and owned by Balamore Farm. The Grand Champion Limousin female banner went to RPY Paynes Blossom 20B, a CFIX Wild Card daughter. Bred by Payne Livestock of Lloydminister Saskatchewan, she is owned and exhibited by East Coast Limousin. The Reserve Grand Champion Female was Balamore Big Mama, bred by Balamore Farm, but owned and exhibited by the Siddall family of Top Of The Hill Farm, Amherst, Nova Scotia. The New Brunswick Beef Expo had two herds participating with 14 animals as well. Premier Breeder and Exhibitor went to Othberg Limousin. Othbergs El Dorado FFP 83E, a RPY Paynes Elvis 34X son got the Grand Champion Bull nod while Othbergs Exquisite FFP 79E received Grand Champion Female. She is sired by Greenwood Pld Zambuka.

Québec news WELCOME TO A FUTURE YOUNG LIMOUSIN BREEDER We are pleased to introduce you Mrs Jeanne Durivage, a young student who is currently registered to the new program on organic production, which is part of the Farm Management and Technology course offered by the Technical Institute of Agriculture at La Pocatière (ITA LA Pocatière). Jeanne grew up on the family farm in Saint-Edouard de Napierville, Quebec (EDPA Farm). Since the very beginning in production in 1870, these cash crop farmers have never stopped to be successful, while keeping very high standards to protect their environment. In complement to the farm current crop production and as Jeanne has a true passion for beef cattle, she is planning in adding a beef cattle herd to the family farm. She is making plans to be producing organic-raised purebred Limousin cattle, in all respect of the animal welfare. In order to get some practical experience in complement to her studies at the ITA LA Pocatière, she is going to make a work stage on a beef cattle ranch in the summer of 2018, in Youngstown, Alberta (over 600 purebred Limousin and commercial cows). We are wishing Jeanne all the success with her future endeavors, she is truly a dedicated and innovative young girl who should become an inspiration for our youth.

Challenging the Pregnancy Checking is a Good Thing Paradigm
Biography: Dr. Colin Palmer is an Associate Professor of Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from Nova Scotia, Dr. Palmer worked in mixed practices in Ontario and British Columbia and has owned/operated a practice in Saskatchewan. Dr. Palmer along with his wife Kim and children Lauren, Emily and Carter run a herd of purebred Red Angus cattle under the KC Cattle Co. name. In the fall of 2016, I published an article about pregnancy checking beef cows (Pregnancy Checking - Sooner is Better than Later!) where I encouraged producers to find open and late calving cows and to remove them from their herds. I even went so far as to claim it was the right thing to do. Does pregnancy checking always make sense? Could it be more profitable to keep those cows and sell them later? Do you need to preg check? I am sure most of you would assume that a vet would recommend getting your cows pregnancy checked? Well, how about another perspective … In an article titled: The economics of pregchecking submitted by the Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) [Reference # 1], published in the October 18, 2017 edition of Canadian Cattlemen the notion that pregnancy checking is always the right thing to do is challenged. According to these authors, cull cow market prices, feed and other costs, preg-checking costs and the type of management system all must be considered when deciding to preg check or not. The cull cow market is a dynamic one. Although we are seeing some very nice positive gains in the weaned calf price and likely good pricing for backgrounded and fed cattle into 2018 the cull cow market has been in steady decline for a few months now. Seasonal declines from what I call the spring hamburger prices into the fall are typically in the 16% to 33% range with the 5-year average sitting around 15% [1]. Once past the late fall run price increases heading into spring usually average 27%; however the range is quite large at 14% to 55% [1]. When numbers based on these multi-year averages are placed in a model, with a per head pregnancy checking fee in the range of $4.35, there is reportedly an economic advantage in most circumstances to skipping the fall preg checking and simply culling the obvious open cows in the spring [1]. However, this may not always be the case. The model, Economics of Pregnancy Testing Beef Cattle, can be accessed through the BCRC website at www.beefresearch.ca. Go to the bottom of the page to the Resources Tab and scroll down and select Decision Making Tools. There is a Basic Model and an Advanced Model. The Basic Model only requires your herd size, type of management system, your calving month, the fall month when you would preg check and the price in that month. All of the other variables are fixed. The Advanced Model enables the producer to enter more data from their herd including daily costs per head, expected daily gain for the cull cows, open percentage, length of the feeding period, and per head pregnancy checking cost. The Advanced Model is intended to enable the producer: “to more accurately calculate the net gain or loss of preg-checking.” As you change scenarios make sure you click on each box or the calculation won’t be updated. Also, even in the advanced model the sell price of cows is established for you based on the fall price. There is no way to manipulate this price. In one scenario I tried from October to April, a typical fall round up until you might realize that that cow won’t calve, the price increased 26%. What if the price increase is modest or nonexistent? Another concern is that while you can choose the calving month the default cull month will be the same. In other words, if you calve in April the program will have you selling your culls in April. Right away a cowboy is going to have a problem with this since most calve over at least 2 months. If you choose not to preg check, it is often hard to identify an open cow by visual assessment in
the same month she was due to calve. In fact, it is darn near impossible to eyeball a fat cow in late spring and decide whether she is going to calve or not. I guess that is why the slaughter trade has an abundance of near term fetal calves in the spring. The model does show that preg checking can pay in some circumstances. For example, if the fall to spring price increase is really good and you have the ability to put some serious pounds on those cows by feeding them separately either in a drylot or other higher feed energy scenario than it will be profitable to preg check and feed the open cows separately. Putting excess condition on all of your pregnant cows is an inefficient use of resources so that is why it is good to avoid doing that. Producers feeding cows baled hay either processed, in bale feeders or placed out in bale grazing scenarios cannot expect to achieve much more than a 0.5 lb per day gain with decent quality hay so you will definitely have to consider how long you are willing to feed them too. In almost any scenario, if the cull cow prices stay the same or changed only slightly preg checking and culling the open cows is probably the best decision; however, with the calculator it has a built in 27% increase in price that can’t be changed. Somewhat surprisingly one can vary the cost of preg checking, but the price of culls differential is fixed! The cost of preg checking is the cheapest input in the whole model! If the cost of preg checking varied by 50% its effect on the model would essentially be 1 day of feeding!! Hmm, time to build my own spreadsheet. Producers should always consider their costs of production carefully – feed, bedding, overhead. Including wastage, you can probably plan on one 1200 – 1400 round bale per cow per month in a hay-based feeding system. If you have to buy additional hay as I do at $0.05 per pound this year that will be $60 to $70 per month in feed costs alone … more than $2.00 per day. And I haven’t included trucking! Also, without pregnancy checking you will need to determine when you will decide that those few cows are not going to calve, or if you will spend money to have them preg checked! The average non-pregnant rate in western Canada is just under 8% [1]. If your herd performs better than this then you typically have very few open cows; therefore, it may be harder to justify the expense for pregnancy checking. On the other hand, pregnancy checking is often a way to diagnose a fertility issue. If you have long breeding seasons and subsequently long calving seasons and you would like to change that – identifying and selling late calving cows or others that don’t fit is probably a good idea. Another benefit that may be lost is that preg checking also provides an opportunity to assess body condition, administer vaccines and to apply topical anti-parasitic products and arguably, most importantly, establish a legal veterinary-client-patient relationship. In closing, the model should be more aptly named The Economics of Identifying and Managing Open Cows. Pregnancy checking costs are cheaper than a vaccination program plus pouron parasitacides, or even the poorest mineral program. Preg checking should be viewed as a herd management tool not an input. Does it pay? From a practical point of view, I am not sure you can identify and manage those open cows without preg checking!
