Last CLA news and update of 2013!

The Limousin breed was in the forefront of the show and sale news throughout the Fall. You, our breeders offered animals that topped all breed sales and achieved supreme wins, or placed in the very small elite groups of finalists. Kudos to you and be sure to know that your hard work is an inspiration for your fellow breeders and your CLA staff alike.

Please make note the following messages from the CLA Board as a result of their meetings in Calgary in December;

• The board will be presenting a by-law change at the next AGM concerning Proto testing. The proposed change will require that both parents of embryos calves, be tested for Proto in order for the resulting calves to be registered.

Implementation date and other details will be shared ahead of time via our multi communication tools (newsletter, website, Voice etc…)

• Another by-law change will be proposed regarding the utilisation of older, non DNA tested A.I. bulls that are siring embryos and/or Fullblood progeny. The current bylaws grandfather these sires for registration of natural purebred calves, but there is not guidelines regarding progeny requiring parentage verification. When an extra dose of semen is available for DNA extraction, the problem is quickly solved, but there have been cases where that was not an option. While the wording of the proposal was not ready at press time, stay tune for details in upcoming newsletters. It is important to remember to check with the CLA office BEFORE utilising older genetics and make sure that registration of progeny will be allowed.

• Also planned for the 2014 Annual General Meeting (July 26 in Saskatoon), the CLA board would like to have an open dialog with the membership regarding the possibility of a gradual implementation of parentage verification of all future registered Limousin animals. If you are interested in sharing your opinion and listening to other members’ views, make sure to attend the AGM.

• In addition to the 5 annual double spread page ads in the Cattlemen magazine, the CLA Board felt that there is merit in advertising in both Bull Buyers’ Guide issues. That publication is also produced by the same publishing house as the Cattlemen, but the 40,000 + copies in circulation in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia cover a large portion of the target bull market. At this time, we are planning on a single page publicity as the format is tabloid size.

La race Limousin a fait les manchettes des reportages d’expositions et des ventes multi-races de l’automne dernier.

Nos éleveurs ont offerts des animaux Limousin dont les prix ont surpassés tous les autres races dans les encans. Ils ont aussi dominé plusieurs concours inter-race, ou ils se sont placés parmi le petit groupe d’élite de finalistes. De la part de tous vos collègues d’élevage, je vous félicite et je tiens à vous rappeler que votre travail ardu est une inspiration pour nous tous.

Le conseil d’administration de l’Association Canadienne Limousin s’est réuni à Calgary les 7 et 8 décembre dernier. Voici les points saillants de leur discussions ;

• Lors de la prochaine assemblée générale annuelle de l’association, le conseil vous proposera un changement de notre charte de règlements. Le changement concerne le testage pour le proto. On suggère que tous les parents d’embryons soient testés pour le default génétique protoporphyria avant que la progéniture soit éligible pour l’enregistrement.

• Un autre changement des règlements concerne l’enregistrement d’embryons et/ou de Fullblood qui sont issues de vieux taureaux sans ADN en dossier. Présentement le règlement protège les taureaux nés avant 1997 pour l’enregistrement de progéniture qui ne requière pas la vérification des parents. Le problème se fait sentir lorsque la progéniture doit avoir un test de parenté, soient les embryons et les Fullblood. Lorsqu’il existe une dose de semence de surplus, l’ADN est extrait de la dose et le problème est éliminé, mais ce n’est pas toujours le cas. Il important de se rappeler de vérifier avec l’Association Canadienne avant l’utilisation de semence de vieux taureaux pour ainsi s’assurer que les veaux seront enregistrables.

• Aussi lors de l’assemblée générale annuelle prévue pour le 26 juillet à Saskatoon, le conseil voudrait discuter avec les membres la possibilité de vérifier la parenté de tous les animaux Limousin qui seraient enregistrés dans le futur. Si vous avez une opinion sur le sujet, on vous encourage à participer à la discussion ou d’informer un directeur qui sera sur les lieux.

• Le conseil d’administration a émis des fonds pour augmenter la publicité de la race Limousin au Québec pour l’année 2014. L’utilisation des fonds sera discutée entre le Conseil d’administration de l’association du Québec ainsi que Luc Forcier, directeur de l’Association Canadienne et Anne Brunet, directrice générale.

As the year is wrapping up, so comes the “year end” reminders from the CLA office;

• Whole Herd Enrolment must be at the CLA office by January 15th, 2014. Early bird incentive applied to herds that enrolled by December 15, 2013 and have five females or more enrolled.

• DNA Transition to SNP: For the last time, we remind you to check all your active animals that have DNA on file and make sure that they have been converted to SNP. The DNA conversion to SNP is free for animals that are reported to the CLA before the end of the year. You can check them on the animal search page of the CLA website. If there is a case number (combination of number and letters in the “SNP” box) that means, you animal has been transitioned. If the box is empty, then contact the CLA.

• The CLA office will be closed from December 23rd until January 2nd.

• Le bureau de l’Association Canadienne Limousin sera fermé du 23 décembre jusqu’au 2 janvier.

Genomics for Canadian Limousin Genomics has been in a lot of industry press and it is an area that will have a tremendous impact on beef cattle breeding whether we are ready for it or not. Basically genomics is the study of the genome or DNA of an animal and how it is passed down through generations. This DNA is the blueprint or the material that holds the design keys for any specific individual and it is what is passed on to offspring of that individual. In the case of cattle this DNA is contained in 60 chromosomes. Each time a calf is conceived the sire passes on 30 chromosomes and the dam contributes the same. During this process, we cannot be sure which chromosomes are passed on and to further complicate matters the DNA is mixed and matched during the process as well. In essence each sire and dam passes on parts of chromosomes that are resorted into a complete genetic unit. This process involves nearly 3 billion base pairs of DNA for each cow. So the real question is what DNA did an animal get and what does it pass on.

The way we have selected cattle in the past has been through “like begets like”. In other words we look at a cow and decide we like her and hope she reproduces herself. Breed associations started adding precision to this process around 200 years ago by tracking pedigree. By knowing what family a cow comes from we can make a better rough estimate of the characteristics that cow may contain in her DNA. Limousin breeders started formally collecting weights and measures on cattle several years ago. By knowing the family tree and closely tracking differences, determining differences between the DNA content of animals became more precise. With the addition of analytical mathematics to logically examine the data and the pedigree of the animals, EPD provide an even more accurate insight into the DNA content of potential breeding stock.

What has changed of late is the power and price of SNP (Snip) technology. SNP markers are like mile markers or flags distributed along the DNA of an animal. By examining performance data and seeing which flags are present when certain traits appear it becomes possible to then use the markers to predict what DNA is present in animals that do not have performance reported yet. For example, if we examine Limousin DNA and records and find out that cows that live more than 10 years have SNP 1A and those that are culled as 2 year olds have SNP 1B. We can then look at the DNA of a heifer calf and if we detect 1A is present we would have a higher probability that she will be in the herd a long time. This is a very simplified example, but it identifies some areas that are important for Limousin breeders to consider.

The Limousin breed has moved towards SNP technology for parentage determination, but the technology as discussed is much more powerful than just determining parentage. SNP panels can also be used to more accurately identify traits in young seedstock. In order to take advantage of this power breeds first need to “train panels”. Training a panel is basically determining which SNP markers are associated with which traits and how strongly they are associated with the trait. If we are interested in a trait such as carcass quality, feed efficiency or longevity we require DNA samples from animals across the spectrum and also data on those animals for the traits we are interested in. In other words, data collection is more important than ever before because we can’t take advantage of DNA technology going forward without data to find out the relationships. Additionally, these relationships may vary across breeds, so each breed will need to take responsibility for obtaining objective data.

If the relationship between an individual SNP marker and a trait is strong it can result in changes to an animal’s EPD and it can also dramatically increase the accuracy of the related EPD. Some work done to date has been able to use SNP technology to provide information to EPD on young cattle, equivalent to having 15 to 25 progeny already in production. This greatly reduces the risk associated with using young seedstock and lets us more accurately predict outcomes in commercial production. It also allows for more affordable evaluation of traits that are otherwise difficult and expensive to measure such as feed efficiency or fatty acid profiles of carcasses. By directly examining the animal’s DNA and increasing the accuracy of prediction it also allows us to find potential seedstock candidates that we may have overlooked based strictly on pedigree estimate or performance based EPD. Limousin in Canada is in a relatively strong position in regards to the development of the technology as there is a historically strong database of performance data, a total herd reporting program, a good DNA bank from parentage verification, and some breeders collecting novel datasets including traits such as feed efficiency. As well, through participation in the Genome Canada project several bulls have been sequenced and many more tested for between 50,000 and 770,000 various SNP markers. This provides a good base to look at training a Limousin panel. Additionally, the CLA is partnered with NALF for genetic evaluation and NALF has been actively engaged in developing the technology for inclusion of genomic values in their genetic evaluation (EPD). This methodology is a key component to provide feedback from genomics in the form of existing EPD that members are familiar with.

There is a tremendous onus on Limousin breeders to actively collect as much complete data as they can on all progeny in their herds. As well, it is a worthwhile endeavour to ensure that DNA samples are collected and stored on the cowherd for future use. A variety of DNA is needed in developing panels and more importantly for determining the relationships between individual SNP markers and the traits we are interested in. Breeds without good datasets are at a real disadvantage in development and deployment of DNA technology as it continues to grow.

Limousin can be at the forefront of the technology and can use it to benefit both members and their customers in making better selection decisions.

THE PERSEVERANCE OF THE PAST AND THE PROMISE OF THE FUTURE- SCOTT MACDONALD

Scott MacDonald has the knowledge and experience of an earlier generation of cattle producers at his disposal, and uses that to his advantage as a young beef producer facing the challenges of today’s cattle industry. MacDonald is an equal partner with his grandparents, Elmer and Doris Herron, and together they run a commercial herd of about 100 head of females at Tara, Ontario. The combination of genetics that they use for their breeding program has produced replacement commercial females that MacDonald refers to simply as ‘black cows.’ “I guess you would call it an Angus-base female, some with Hereford in them, some with Simmental, some Limo,” he explained. “And then we use black Limo bulls as our sires.” This crossbreeding program was designed with quality beef in mind, and the family feeds calves out specifically for slaughter purposes. “We calve in the spring, and we wean in November and keep our own calves and feed them through until about the first of March, so they’re about 10-11 months old, and then we sell them at a local sales barn.” Currently, MacDonald works off the farm at a crop input supplier doing sales and as a professional field crop applicator, and always looks forward to coming home to work on his cattle.

The history of his family’s involvement in the beef industry, MacDonald explained, began with Elmer and Doris establishing their herd in the 1950s, originally a Hereford herd with calves on grass to be sold as two year olds. “They dispersed their cows in the 60s, and started feeding western calves in the feedlot through to fat. They did that until about the early 80s, when they sold the feedlot, and from then to 2000 they just ran western calves as yearlings on grass,” MacDonald stated. With the new millennium came a new opportunity for Elmer to buy black cattle and build his commercial herd throughout the decade.

In 2009, MacDonald, newly graduated from Ridgetown College at the University of Guelph, took a larger role in the running of his grandparents’ beef program. “At that point I started to buy into the herd and took a job at a local agri-business. So being close by, I was able to be around to help, and eventually I hope to have full ownership of the herd.” When asked what keeps him motivated, his answer is intertwined with the way of life his grandparents have known since their start in the beef industry. “I think from both mine and my grandparents’ perspectives, it’s certainly a way of life. We do enjoy what goes with it. I guess it’s one of those things that’s in the blood,” he explained. “I do enjoy it when I get to go home and do things with the cow herd.”

Both MacDonald’s grandparents and parents played a role in getting him started in the beef industry, and his first experience with Limousin-influence cattle took place as a 4-H member. “My parents feed yearlings on grass and in the wintertime, too. Once the cows came along at that point I was at the age to start 4-H, so we got started with that,” he recalled. “We were showing steers, and that was where we came to appreciate the Limos. (It) was certainly through the genetics that were involved in that aspect of it.” His experience with showing Limousin-influence steers provided some direction in his future beef operation plans with his grandparents.

“Certainly the genetics that we were getting from our cross in the show ring was proving successful just in the show ring itself, but I think it helped my grandparents appreciate that what they were doing was in the right step, or in the right direction,” he said. “I guess the muscling certainly is the attraction to it in the breed itself. That is one thing we like to see.”

When choosing genetics for his commercial herd, MacDonald has certain traits in mind that his herd sires must pass on to their progeny. “We’re looking for docility, it’s the most important for us,” he stated, also mentioning the necessity of muscling in their breeding program. On the topic of EPDs, MacDonald knows what he’s looking for in potential sires. “Birth weight would probably be most important. That is the first thing that we look at, and it’s probably the only EPD that we do look at … We like to keep it under 80 pounds.” MacDonald added that another factor he considers when choosing bulls is the combination of longevity and easy keeping. “Our bulls never see a barn. They run with the cows on grass all summer then winter in the bush on hay, and (are) ready to go back to work in late spring,” he stated. “The Top Meadow Farms program is providing us with bulls that can do this year after year.” These breeding plans are part of a larger goal of feed efficiency that MacDonald has his sights set on. “A goal of mine is the same as a lot of producers and that is to do more with the same number of acres, and I feel that by using the limo sires we are producing a very efficient cross when it comes to turning roughage into beef.”

Looking ahead to the future of their beef program, MacDonald explains that assuming full ownership of their program from his grandfather is a goal for both parties in question, one which they hope to accomplish in the next few years. MacDonald also plans on developing a fall calving herd in an effort to make the most of their siress and time. “We spring calve at this time, everything is calved April-May, but I would like to go with more cows. But it gets to be a lot in the spring and we can run into some pretty crappy weather here— it’s wet— so it would be a way of having more cows and spreading the workload out, and it would reduce having to have more bull power around, too.” When considering the future, MacDonald noted that the sustainability of the cattle industry is what he considers to be the biggest challenge currently facing beef producers in Canada.

“There’s no question, every year there’s less and less guys in our area that are feeding cattle just because of the way crop prices have been. Now (the crop prices) are just recently starting to back off a bit, so things are starting to look a little better, but that would be the biggest thing. It’s just that input costs have been more that what we’ve been getting out of the cattle.” MacDonald concluded his interview on a positive note about the future of the Limousin breed in the Canadian beef industry, with a hopeful outlook for the years to come. “We think it will play an important role in the industry, certainly because of its muscling ability and to produce lean meat for our conscious consumer diet.” His plans for the future of his commercial herd and his connections to the traditions and hard work that made this family beef program what it is today will serve MacDonald well in his future endeavours in the cattle industry.

Now that the 2013 show season has passed, we can reflect on the success of the breed throughout the nation. Three Supreme Championships, the high sellers over all breeds at the Royal and Agribition sales; but foremost... the best composite group of Limousin seed stock ever, representing the breed at fall competitions.

Credit goes and is well deserved by all who campaigned their program throughout the country, because that sector of promotion entails dedication, preparation and a lot of expense. Checking out of my room, after a week of Agribition, darn near required a doctor on call. But now that the tack boxes full of half cans of sprays, oils and the occasional heel are frozen up and safely stored, we can look forward to the festive season with family and friends.

Granted, during this period of the year and as the days get shorter, we all need a bit of catch up time... time to get a little well deserved rest and get rid of the annual “Agribition crud.” This time of year also requires catch-up on your paperwork, tax situation and Whole Herd Enrollment. The key to any successful breeding program is an accurate and current paper trail...and since each and every breeder pays their share of association programs related to technology, one must participate and contribute to get the “bang for your buck.” This leads to the simple question...are you using the technology provided for you...namely EPD’s. Surveying advertising in the past year, less than twenty percent of the advertisers use them, which tells me that the other eighty percent do not feel they are a marketing or herd improvement benefit.

Well old-timer, get used to it, because they are going be a major selection criteria in the entire seed stock industry. Granted, the numbers issued each spring and fall need to show a degree of accuracy, but genomic technology will supply us tools to identify and improve traits from performance through reproduction and stayability. The benefit of adding genomics into the present genetic evaluation (EPD’s)will be increasing the accuracy of young animals not yet in production or those with only a few progeny. This can give producers increased confidence in selecting young replacement sires or females. To benefit by this new technology, we must understand and use technology already available to us, free of charge, with the only cost ...an open mind. Most importantly, breeders must understand that this new wave of technology is not just dedicated to the Limousin breed...it was proven through the far-advanced dairy industry and now every beef breed is in this race to get the highest accurate data in the industry. This evolution in DNA technology has feedlots and packers excited and involved in an effort to reduce risk in this highly volatile industry... therefore breeders cannot afford to wait!

The fall stocker run has been good, very good and the future holds better things to come...we will see the highest priced commercial cattle in history as North America restocks a depleted supply of inventory. The long dark nights in December and January will be a great time to investigate your numbers, how they are applied, where your herd needs improvement and become more familiar to the genomics that await us in the years ahead...it might well be the difference between survival and reward.

My name is Cameron Olson. I live just outside of Calgary, Alberta, on a half section of land. My family and I have raised purebred Limousin cattle for the last six years. Currently, I am twenty years old and attending my third year at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. I am majoring in Animal Science, as well as pursuing a Meat Science Certificate and I have plans to begin a career in the beef industry after I have graduated.

My involvement in the Limousin breed started in 2005, when I purchased my first purebred heifer from the Pacesetter sale at FarmFair International. She was big, and I was little, and she pushed me all over every show ring she entered, but I loved her for it. I haven’t looked back since then, and I have never regretted my decision to enter into such a fantastic breed with such awesome people.

As a whole, Limousin is posed to rocket to new heights in the next decade. Cattle numbers are down across North America, due to international markets and environmental issues. Some estimates claim that the North American herd is down to near mid 1960’s levels, and demand for lean, tasty, inexpensive beef is only going up. Limousin fills that niche in the consumer’s needs, by providing beef that is naturally leaner, yet tasty and tender, and more economical on feed and in the slaughterhouse when compared to many other breeds. By attending Texas A&M University, I am developing the skills Limousin needs to help push it forward in the beef cattle marketplace.

Attending TAMU as an international student is not easy. I am far from home and the family, people, and cattle that I love. It is expensive, and here in Texas, really hot sometimes.

However, the skills that I developed while at home with my cattle have allowed me to attend TAMU and study in its prestigious College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, in one of the premier Animal Science Departments and Meat Science sections in the world. Without having developed my leadership and organization skills, it’s doubtful that I could have made it all the way down here. My terms as AJLA and CJLA president and secretary boosted my confidence and provided invaluable lessons in time management, planning, meeting organization, delegation of duties, and the importance of being responsible.

The network of friends I have developed has also proven totally invaluable. Even here, I am meeting people who know friends that I have at home. Without these networks, the new connections wouldn’t be made. That is a really cool part of the entire thing. The people I know and the things I can do I owe almost entirely to the Limousin breed.

Limousin have and will continue to be central to my life for the foreseeable future. I believe that they are one of the breeds that are and will become successful on the global market, given the right amount of guidance and hard work. They have added so much to my education and to my career plans already that it only seems fair to try and add some back to the organization.

My name is Dillon Hunter.

I have grown up on my farm just outside Kenton, MB, helping my family raise purebred Limousin cattle; including helping calve out cows, processing cattle in the spring and fall, and helping get bulls ready for our annual bull sale in the spring.

Along with helping my family raise quality purebred Limousin cattle, I have been working on increasing my own herd of Limousin cattle throughout these years.

I have been part of the Manitoba Junior Limousin Assoc. for ten years.

Throughout these years I have been the secretary and have helped in making fundraising ideas and planning of the National Junior show. I have attended our provincial junior show every year, as well as

showing in the provincial shows.

I have been part of the Canadian Junior Limousin Assoc. for twelve years. I have attended multiple National Junior conferences all of over Canada through the years and have seen junior members bring some tremendous cattle to these shows, as well making some great friends over the years. I came on to the CJLA Board of Director four years ago, two of these years I held the president position.

At the time I had a small herd of fifteen purebred Angus, and upon moving decided it would be best to send my stocker calves to go with the Limousin calves of Justin’s to market.

What was the difference? My calves were all black, he had many black calves the same size. But I wanted my Angus to run through the ring separate because I really thought they were a nice set and felt confident in them selling as their own group.

Outside Limousin shows my family and I have attended numerous one-day cattle shows throughout the summer, displaying quality cattle from our farm and the Limousin breed. We have shown cattle at the Manitoba Livestock Expo in were slight differences between my calves and the Limousin calves.

The Limousin breed has opened up a new world to myself. Growing up in Eastern Ontario on a commercial cow calf farm I had become exposed to many types of breeds. My first real exposure to Limousin was when I met Justin Burgess and his family that breed purebred Limousin stock.

Over the past six years my brother and I have attended the all-breed Manitoba Youth Beef Round-Up show in Neepawa.

I have learned many things in my years of being a Junior Member and raising Limousin cattle, which has given me confidence in everything I do. I have also made many great friends over my years of being in the beef industry.

Moving calves the first ones to try and jump the walls and be prone to kicking were my Angus. Which is slightly embarrassing given the fact they had very similar upbringings and had plenty of time to adjust to the farm they all resided on. Being a little barn blind to my stockers versus the Limousin stockers those differences seemed non-existent to myself.

It wasn’t until the sale that the proof of Limousin superiority showed itself. My best Angus stocker got ten cents less than the average Limousin stocker from the Burgess family. Though baffling to myself at the time looking back on it now and knowing the biophysical differences between the two breeds it’s not nearly so shocking.

The price is great but the ease of production of the Limousin versus the other breeds I have worked with really is what sets the Limousin so far ahead. Maternal cows means less confusion with first time heifers.

beat. And the gain to feed intake ratio is so great and translates to being better overall.

Two years after that sale my entire Angus herd has liquidated because I choose to operate a more efficient animal with a better temperament that ultimately pays out better.

Ease of operation overall is what in my mind sets the breed so far ahead.

There are enough challenges to farming so by choosing the highest quality breed that are the easiest keepers only makes sense to furthering our operation.

The transition to purebred Limousin has not been the smoothest to my commercial cow calf mindset.

Purebreds are a great avenue but the larger picture about sending quality genetics outwards into the entire beef chain is something I have seen work well since being introduced to the breed. My home farm has brought in Limousin bulls against Charolais.

The performance of the Limousin on our broad spectrum of commercial cows is prodigious in the sale ring and on the rail. So much so Limousin are the only genetics we bring in now.

As well two years later I have been exposed to the Limousin purebred industry across Canada and cannot ignore the overwhelming sense of community that is so welcoming and driving towards the same goal.

Representing the Limousin breed in modern times and getting the word out about all the things we as a breed can do for the modern day market.

My passion for the Limousin breed began 6 years ago when I worked for Hi Way Limousin at Agribition. It was the experience that got the ball rolling. I worked for Hi Way’s the following year which is when my involvement in the breed started. I bought my first Limousin heifer at the Solid Gold Sale. I purchased her from Hi Way’s for $2800. The rush I got after buying her gave me the sense that I found my home in the Limousin breed.

Our cattle operation mainly consists of commercial cattle. We have always ran Limousin bulls and the odd Angus bull. We are extremely pleased with the results we get from our Limousin herd bulls. The Limousin breed has superb growth and marbling.

When producers sell cattle, they are paid by the pound. When we sell our calves, whether its heifers or steers, our Limousin influenced calves are normally heavier than our Angus influenced calves. I believe that the Limousin breed does a great job on converting their feed into performance; and therefore, being in the Limousin breed has opened many doors for me.

Last year was my first time ever taking cattle to Agribition. An experience I will never forget. I have always showed cattle in 4-H, but never at a purebred show, or a show as big and iconic as Agribition.

During these shows, I have met many great people in the Limousin breed.

I think that any producer in the cattle industry would be pleased to see a junior member get involved in any breed. It shows interest and promise in that breed. This past summer I took a purebred Limousin pair to the Summer Synergy in Olds, my first show out of province. I am very glad I went to this show because I was able to get my name out there to other people. I am proud of the purebred Limousin cattle that I have raised and can hardly wait to show them at Agribition this fall. I always look forward to Agribition, not only to show cattle, but to see and catch up with the other breeders.

I am extremely happy with the junior program that the Limousin breed has ongoing. The juniors are the future of the breed. I believe that the breed has a bright future. I would not want to be involved in any other breed!

Hi, my name is Ryley Bielecki, I’m 19 years old and currently in my second year of Kinesiology at the University of Saskatchewan. I grew up on a mixed cattle and grain Farm North of Paradise Hill, Saskatchewan where we ran approximately 100 head of commercial Simmental Angus cross influenced females. A couple of years ago we were influenced to try a different breed on some commercial cows. The breed would be Limousin. We purchased a few heifer calves to use in our 4-H club the following year and loved them so much we decided to buy our own herd. My brother Curtis, sister Nicole and myself got the chance to sort through some select cows at Greenwood Limousin of Lloydminster. Being told that they were pioneers of the breed we knew we had come to the right place to look for cattle. We bought a package of 20 bred cows and have not looked back since.

Together my siblings and I formed RCN Livestock. As calving and then summer passed we realized we needed to do something with the bull calves.

Hi I’m Tessa Nybo. Lifelong learning is important in all industries, especially so in the evolving agriculture sector.

Agricultural practices are improving rapidly and farm managers must be educated to meet new industry demands. Consumers are demanding higher quality products at a lower price tag and therefore farmers must improve their farming practices in order to appease consumers without significantly increasing their input costs.

Getting a solid foundation of education at a university or college is the first step to a path of lifelong agricultural learning. Learning the principles of operating and marketing a business is essential to maintaining and improving your farming operation.

This was a real eye opener for us and goes to show exactly how much the Limousin breed has helped shape who I am. Marketing your bulls at first was a huge concern for me as you have to talk to a lot of new and different people, explaining to them why they should consider purchasing one of your bulls. Not anymore!

Being around many of the different cattle shows and meeting so many unique people in this great breed is one of the reasons we enjoy doing it so much. You learn so much from other people who have been in the industry for many years. For example, I’ve learned a lot about marketing, EPD’s, bloodlines and breeding, just to name a few. I believe the Limousin breed also holds an impact on younger generations to come.

Youth look up to others in the industry as huge role models who influence the way they talk, clip cattle, market cattle or even show cattle. This is huge and very promising as I feel there are many great upcoming of people brought up within the breed and I’m just fortunate enough to know I’m a part of it.

Farming is much more advanced than it was years ago, however many farm managers have not changed their practices to reflect the evolving industry. Targeting new markets through websites, social media, and other modern sources is a marketing strategy that many farmers neglect to implement when selling their livestock or crops. Using more efficient and modern production methods is also often not readily accepted by farm managers who do not receive proper training to use these new technologies.

Therefore, it is important that farmers become aware of new industry practices and how they can improve what they are already doing on their farm in order to improve their efficiency and their bottom line.

I have many people who I feel are good, solid role models on me within this breed that will help me influence some of the life choices I make in the cattle sector. I don’t know many people in other breeds who can say they are lucky enough to have the leadership, commitment and dedication like we do in ours.

Farm managers lead a hectic life and often find it impossible to leave the farm for any period of time especially when they manage both a crop and livestock operation and are busy year round. However, it is important that periodic learning be incorporated into farmer’s schedules. Attending day long programs that combine numerous sessions of your choice is a practical and beneficial way to learn and improve your skills and knowledge in a short period of time.

These types of programs are generally organized by farmers for farmers so the sessions are targeted at real industry issues and advancements.Sessions could include topics relating to environmental sustainability, low stress livestock management; new crop technologies such as GPS, and using new management practice such as

no-tillage, etc. Farm managers can also assist aspiring farmers by mentoring them through programs such as Green Certificate and Cattlemen’s Young Leaders which can be done while continuing to complete farm work. These programs allow experienced farmers to share their vast skills and knowledge in a hands-on situation with the next generation of farmers.

For new farm managers gaining a post-secondary education in agriculture is the building blocks for lifelong learning. For all farm managers finding ways to schedule a day of sessions where farmers can learn and network with other farmers is

essential to building on the skills they already possess while also gaining new knowledge. Mentoring and providing training to young farmers is the final step in both improving the skills of experienced and future farmers.

Maintaining a desire to learn how to improve your farm management methods is key to making agriculture a sustainable and profitable venture for years to come.

2013 Masterfeeds Limousin Show Cattle of the Year

The 2013 awards were presented at the Canadian Western Agribition on November 15, by Walt Taylor, Dealer Business Manager for Masterfeeds. This year, forty five Limousin breeders invested in promoting the breed and their program on the show road. Ten Limousin shows in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta had 30 head or more and qualified for points. It is also worth noting that Limousin animals won Supreme Championships seven times in 2013.

Excelling in the Real World Brittany Papenhuyzen, Cottage Lake Livestock For Brittany Papenhuyzen, the road to raising Limousin was inspired by family tradition, but the journey was not without adversity. Papenhuyzen, 24, grew up on her parents’ farm, Cottage Lake Livestock at Stony Plain, Alberta. “My family had started out with a commercial herd and out of there decided that Limousin was the breed that they wanted to raise,” she explained. “So I was born into the cattle industry and I’ve been in it ever since.” Papenhuyzen had her sights set on a different path, studying premedicine, when her father was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in 2007. This tragic event shifted her attention to their Limousin operation, going on to receive her diploma in Business from Olds College. In addition to raising cattle with her mom Laura and sisters Katrina and Lindsey, Papenhuyzen is currently completing her agronomy certificate and works in marketing and sales.

Papenhuyzen’s choice to continue raising Limousin cattle was based on a number of factors, but was ultimately due to her family’s connection to the breed and the friendly, welcoming atmosphere among Limousin producers. “It’s kind of like a second family, the breeders and the atmosphere,” she said. Giving consideration

to the breeds’ traits and the ambition of Limousin breeders, Papenhuyzen sees an important place for Limousin in the Canadian cattle industry. “I think that we’re a very innovative and progressive breed,” she stated. “You hear constantly how we’ve got so many people in this world to feed and not enough to do that with, and I think we need to just keep moving ahead and being progressive, which I definitely think we are, and we’re going to play a huge role with our breed in the future of agriculture.”

Currently, Papenhuyzen is focused on the genetic quality of her herd and on innovation to meet the needs of the beef industry. “Our program is small, but I think we really focus on the quality aspect of it.

said. She has found success in new tactics for their program, such as selling their first semen packages and buying females from the United States, and plans on flushing and selling embryos from one of their established cow families. “We’re always trying to be innovative and be on top of the market and what’s happening in today’s beef industry.”

As the Cottage Lake brand extends to the family’s promotional business, Papenhuyzen is no stranger to the ever-evolving nature of marketing, using those strategies to her advantage when promoting and selling her cattle, the majority of which is done by private treaty. As well, she has found that the standards they maintain have kept customers coming back. “People trust our program— they purchased animals from us in the past and it’s worked, and if it’s not something that we’d use in our own program, we don’t expect other people to use it in theirs,” she explained.

“the way that things have changed, from my parents running the farm to having a lifechanging experience and then myself running the farm. I know I can do it, it hasn’t been easy but I work at it and I think that’s where agriculture and the beef industry need to go,” she said. “I think I have a lot of successes in the cattle industry and showing industry, for being as young as I am, and I think that’s definitely something I can stand behind and I think a lot of other people can accomplish as well.”

In the next few years, Papenhuyzen plans on building up her herd, with a special focus on quality genetics and a trusted program. “I’d like to slowly progress in my numbers, making sure that my customers have confidence in my program and always will,” she explained. Papenhuyzen’s passion for raising cattle pushes her to excel in both the pasture and the show ring. “I love it.

If it was work to me or a job or something like that, I wouldn’t be as motivated, but it’s something that I had and then lost and then I knew I couldn’t live without, and that’s definitely why I am in the beef industry today.”

Papenhuyzen’s experience shows that young cattle producers can succeed in the beef industry, even when faced with adversity.

She finds energy in her passion for raising cattle and in her hopes for youth, and her sisters in particular, in the cattle business. “I think being able to prove that it is possible, even at a young age, is one of the main reasons I do it,” she stated. Leone was a farm girl plain and simple. Her love of nature and animals was a perfect fit. The routine of morning chores taught her a discipline that would serve her well later in life. She learnt early in life that the animals need to be fed and the school bus still arrives early. She never really left the farm, following the family tradition of showing cattle, attending sales, meetings and always volunteering to help at any level. People at Limousin functions always looked forward to Karwandy’s attending and looked for the smiles and support that they offered, especially Leone.

Leone and her husband David ran a purebred limousin herd of around 80 head. This herd of select Purebred and Full Blood animals was started by Leone’s family back in the early 70’s. Some of these animals were imported from France and stayed in their herd for many years. Leone’s love and care of animals was evident by her first heifer “Shanny” who lived for 22 years and produced 23 calves.

Leone was active on all levels showing cattle at numerous shows and sales. They participated for many years in an annual bull sale with Andersons and Bohrsons. She was a long time member of the

Saskatchewan Limousin Association and served on many committees. The standing joke was that she and Terry seemed to get re-cycled every few years.

Nothing was too much for her and when something needed to be done, you could always depend on Leone.

Leone served as a director on the CLA Board and was a founding committee member of the Canadian Junior Limousin Conference in Lloydminster. Her most recent duties were Secretary Treasurer of the SLA and a board member.

Most recently, David and Leone ran a small butcher shop in their yard. They did some custom butchering for neighbours and family and in Leones’ words, “this is where the Limo’s really shine.” They could tell you which animal belonged to the carcass breed.

Leone has many friends in the livestock business and will be truly missed. The 2013 Agribition Show has been dedicated to her and she is the recipient of the 2013 CLA Award of Distinction.

Rapport de la Journée génétique bovine du 2 octobre 2013 Préparé par Diane Allard M. Sc., agronome

La journée génétique bovine du 2 octobre 2013 avait pour but de mettre en pratique les notions de génétique et de sélection de sujets pour la reproduction, et d’échanger avec les futurs agronomes, les intervenants de la région et des producteurs de bovins de boucherie du territoire mais également de Chaudière-Appalaches sur les sujets qui touchent le quotidien des producteurs et des entreprises bovines.

Lors des cours théoriques du 25 septembre à l’Université Laval, les notions d’ÉDP, d’ABC, de répétabilités (précision), d’héritabilité, de corrélation, de vigueur hybride, de sujet F1 et de croisement triple terminal ont été expliquées. Plusieurs exemples de choix de taureaux ont été présentés selon différents types d’exploitation. Les étudiants ont également pris connaissance des caractères de quelques races : Charolais, Limousin, Simmental, Angus et Hereford.

Les deux fermes sélectionnées pour la journée sont des entreprises très différentes dont les sujets reproducteurs sont de race Une petite partie du troupeau Noble Limousin Limousin « Full blood » pour la première, et des sujets croisés pour la deuxième.

En matinée et en après-midi, les participants à l’activité devaient sélectionner le ou les meilleurs taureaux selon les critères définis dans les questions. La semaine précédente, les étudiants avaient un devoir à faire : ils devaient mettre les ÉPD des taureaux (du catalogue du CIAQ édition 2013) sur une base 0 afin de se préparer aux exercices à la ferme. Cela avait pour but de les aider à évaluer rapidement les différents caractères de gain et/ou les caractères maternels qu’ils peuvent transmettre à leur progéniture. 90 personnes ont participé à l’activité.

En matinée, nous sommes allés à l’entreprise Noble Limousin à Saint-Basile. Mme Dorothée Sunderland et M. Réjean Bédard Mme Dorothée et M. Réjean Bédard souhaitent la bienvenue au groupe. nous ont présenté l’entreprise. M. Bédard a relaté l’histoire de la ferme qui compte environ 500 acres, et qui était auparavant une entreprise laitière. En 1994, après la vente des sujets laitiers, M. Bédard a voyagé et s’est vite intéressé à la race Limousin, une race terminale qui donne beaucoup de rendement. Quelques semaines après le départ des vaches laitières, les premières vaches de race Limousin sont arrivées à la ferme et depuis ce temps, M. Bédard est très fier de son troupeau. Pour produire les sujets de son élevage, M. Bédard fait régulièrement venir de la semence de taureaux français, et environ 50% des vaches sont inséminées chaque année. Pour les autres femelles, un taureau de génétique supérieure est utilisé et M.Bédard n’hésite pas à se procurer les meilleurs taureaux Limousin sur le marché. Ses animaux sont vendus pour la reproduction mais il a aussi un marché de viande de congélateur. Il participe au PATBQ depuis 1997. M. Bédard n’hésite pas à envoyer pour la viande des taureaux bien musclés mais qui n’ont pas un bon tempérament : « je ne vendrai pas un taureau dangereux qui risque de tuer quelqu’un ». Il ajoute que même si l’animal a un bon tempérament, on doit toujours s’en méfier. Sage conseil!

Avant de faire les exercices, les participants ont été invités à prendre un rafraîchissement. Plusieurs en ont profité pour regarder les affiches sur la race Limousin et les photos de l’entreprise d’hier à aujourd’hui, ainsi que plusieurs prix que l’entreprise s’est méritée depuis l’arrivée des sujets de race Limousin.

Après la petite-pause santé, nous sommes allés près du troupeau pour répondre aux 3 questions de l’exercice du matin. Avant d’aller dîner, nous avons porté un toast à Mme Dorothée Sunderland et M. Réjean Bédard pour le si bel accueil à leur entreprise. Mme Dorothée a eu la gentillesse de payer le repas à une participante et c’est l’étudiante Anne-Sophie qui a été l’heureuse gagnante. The Livestock Gentec Conference 2013 (LGC2013) was a resounding success. Our theme, “Turning Information into Application,� was well received by all, but in particular, by producers.

The first day started with a session by researcher and industry associate Dr. John Crowley on how to best use the genomic tools available today, and how to prepare to best use what will be available in the future; this was followed with an interactive session with producers during lunch on the second day of the conference.

Other keynote sessions on the first day included detailed information on how producers can effectively participate in the carbon market in Alberta by Karen HaugenKozyra, how agricultural economics can be used for better production decision-making by Dr. Jon Biermacher, and insights into the challenges and achievements in Brazilian agriculture by Dr. Fernando Antonio Pereira.

Keynote sessions on the second day included a session on how Cattleland Feedyards make the best of what they get using genomics technology by Dr. William Torres, an eye-opening view of the current and future economic potential of genomics in the beef industry by Dr. Peter Fennessy from AbacusBio, and an industry view of how to grow the best possible beef at the least possible cost from Steve Whitmire of Brasstown Beef.

Feedback for all speakers was extremely positive.

Considering the range of topics discussed in genomics application at LGC-2013, attendees remarked how fortunate they were in learning more about genomics in general, and the potential in scientific and production applications.

Additional speakers included messages of the power of genomics from some of our sponsors, updates on the major projects and initiatives at Livestock Gentec and Delta Genomics, and closing remarks by the Alberta Minister of Agriculture, the Honourable Verlyn Olson.

A student and research poster viewing occurred on the first day, following the presentations. This event allowed networking of students and researchers with industry attendees. Breaks in the official two-day program also allowed for networking opportunities among attendees.

We administered a voluntary producer questionnaire over the two days, and over a 75% response rate. The questionnaire provides insight into the viewpoints of producers in terms of feasibility of adoption of genomics technologies.

Overall, we are extremely pleased with the outcome LGC-2013. We achieved our objectives of transferring practical knowledge to the industry, engaging with industry and creating networks for future collaborations, the Delta Genomics Centre was well represented and we look forward to attending to the needs of new clients that were gained at the event, and we have further established Livestock Gentec as the organization to serve as a partner in the livestock industry.

In the future, we hope to improve upon our social networking presence. For this event we had good representation from delegates, students, and staff at Livestock Gentec, but for future events, this will be built upon to create more real time interaction with industry and researchers that can be extended beyond the conference timeframe. We realize the importance of creating connections with industry; this is crucial for adoption of genomics technology and something that is difficult in any technology application. We hope that the information provided during LGC-2013 and the feedback generated from the producer questionnaire will better enable us to connect with producers to provide the production solutions they seek.
