Show season Whether or not you are a fan of showing cattle, it remains an effective venue of displaying quality Limousin cattle. Those who invest in this marketing method, do everyone in the breed a huge favour by waving the flag, giving the rest of us a reason to gather at one place, at one time. These breeders represent us in all- breed supremes and they do us proud when they are competitive, giving us another reason to brag about our breed and our people. If you took cattle out this year, I thank you on behalf of those who did not. The National Limousin Show in Toronto was a success from every angle. An excellent crowd attended and stayed to take part of the Elite All Breed Sale that took place later that evening. Congratulations to the Show Cattle of Year Winners. The CLA is proud to recognize your continuous efforts in achieving success along the show road. Please see show results, Show Cattle of Year standings and the complete coverage of the National Show in this issue of the Voice. On-line Show broadcasting Many of our Limousin shows were accessible via an on-line broadcast this year. There are now several providers of that service, and it appears that quality wise, they are all about the same. If you watched the Royal (National) Limousin show or Farmfair or Agribition, the CLA is very interested in getting your feedback. That information is very useful when planning an event and budgeting for the costs involved. Board of Directors Meeting Your Board of Directors met in Calgary on December 4 and 5. Highlights of the decisions/discussions include: • New vision and promotional campaign (see article in this issue of the Voice) • The board sees a huge advantage for breeders to join BIXS and to encourage commercial Limousin users to do the same. BIXS is a direct way to obtain carcass information which is very important in the future promotion of the Limousin breed. • Appointment of a new adult advisor to the CJLA: Terry Hepper • Appointment of a new National Show AND Sale Chairman: Darby Cochrane • WHE reinstatement fees for dormant herds has been capped at $1000, regardless the number of cows in a herd. • The 2012 AGM is set for Friday, July 13 at 9 am in Olds, Alberta. Place to be determined. Three directors’ positions are open as Darby Cochrane, Stan Skeels and Brian Lee have completed their terms. Only Brian Lee is eligible to run for a second term.

Still looking for Christmas gifts? If you are still looking for that last minute gift, keep in mind that the CLA offers numerous “Limousin” items such as shirts, coffee mugs, travel mugs, tote bags, hats etc. View items on our website at www.limousin.com. A subscription to the Limousin Voice also makes an excellent gift.

Meilleurs vœux à tous! De la part des directeurs de l’association et du personnel, je vous souhaite un très Joyeux Noël et une année de prospérité Limousin! Veuillez prendre note que les bureaux de l’association seront fermés du 26 au 30 décembre.

It will be bull sale time before you know it In a few short weeks, the bull sales will start. A few reminders: • Did you notify the CLA of your sale date for posting on the events calendar? • Are you considering web advertising on our “Search” section of the website? Do you know that you could link your catalogue from that banner ad? • The next Voice will be the issue that goes to past bull buyers, make note of the deadlines: space booking January 15, ad copy deadline January 25. • Are you bulls registered? Do you need some DNA work done? Don’t leave these things to the last minute. Help us, help you! • Make sure the terms of sale are clearly indicated on the bill of sale to avoid misunderstanding between seller and buyer. CLA office The CLA work load kept a steady to increasing pace all summer and fall. As a result, we added some part time help to the registry department as Dallas’ three days a week were no longer sufficient. Devra Leavitt joined the team as a casual, part time employee back in September. While Devra doesn’t have direct cattle business roots, she has proven to be a fast learner and a wonderful addition to our staff. Merry Christmas from all of us! Your Canadian Limousin Association staff and Board of Directors wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy, Healthy New Year! Please note that the CLA office will be closed from December 26th until the 30th.

Devra is the newest addition to the CLA registry department.

The Canadian Limousin Association Board of Directors met in Calgary on December 4 and 5. Along with the regular business issues to deal with, they utilized their time to discuss a new vision and direction for the association and the breed. While assessing industry trends, especially for meat yield (see table) and the fact that the pharmaceutical sector has identified a need for a feed additive that promotes carcass yield, the Board quickly focused on this as an opportunity. While it is not new to us that Limousin cattle produce superior yield, perhaps it is time again to remind the rest of the industry of this genetic ability of the breed. Industry trends:

% of Yield 3 cattle in Canada % of Yield 2 cattle in Canada % of Yield 1 cattle in Canada

*stats provided by CanFax

2008 10.7% 27.9% 59.8%

2009 12.4% 31.7% 54%

2010 13.9% 33.4% 51.3%

Y1 >59%, Y2 – 54% to 58%, Y3 <53% Our opportunity rests in promoting the Limousin breed as a natural way of achieving greater yield without sacrificing marbling. Marbling has been the push, thus the abundance of British influenced cattle in our North American herd base, but marbling can be obtained with the proper feeding program and not necessarily with genetic selection. It is a different story for yield. Therefore the yielding ability of Limousin genetics will be the focal point of all promotional activities for the immediate future. Limousin, the natural genetic advantage. We also know that beef consumption in Canada has been declining. In the Unites States it went from 94 lbs per capita in 1976 to 54 lbs in 2011. Are consumers concerned with our beef quality? Is North American beef too fat? Is it perceived as unsafe due to feed additives and growth promoters? If those are some of the problems, we know that Limousin can be a huge part of the solution. The execution of the plan will start with the print advertising that we place in the Cattlemen. A transition ad will start, followed by a brand new campaign. The CLA will also be placing single page ads in strategic spots. We also plan on a direct mail out to the key industry players. But the key Limousin players start with you …. our breeders! We suggest that all members use the same focus in their promotion. Provincial associations will also be provided with ad content and will be strongly encouraged to join the CLA’s vision. Look for new material to be available in the very near future. It will be posted on our website at www.limousin.com. Furthermore, we urge everyone to register on BIXS, the Beef Information Exchange System. Slaughter data on your animals will be made available to you and could be pooled with other Limousin carcass information. These numbers will provide new support material on the superiority of the Limousin breed. Make sure to inform your bull buyers about BIXS and encourage them to register as well. When looking at the complete picture and assessing the need for natural high yielding animals and the information that a few select Ontario feedlots shared with us via in an article in the last Voice, the message is consistent. The industry will be relying on the Limousin breed to add extra muscle, high yielding cattle. The task rests on our seedstock producers to never step back from breeding thick, quiet cattle so that when demand picks up, it can be sustained with the right kind.

Limousin Voice Christmas 2011  13

It began with a couple of steers for 4H. Yet, from those seemingly simple origins, the Swaan family transformed their Quesnel, B.C. farm into one dedicated to the Limousin. 1983 was a big year for Rob Swaan. He started Pinnacle View Dairy and his partner in loving the Limousin was born - his daughter Erin. The farm evolved to add broiler chickens in subsequent years and naturally Erin began to take part in 4H. No one could have predicted how much that 4H club would change their farm. “The muscling of the animals is what I really appreciated,” Rob said in a recent interview. “So that’s why we chose the (Limousin) 4H steers and quickly went into purchasing some cattle from a local limo breeder and that’s where we started our herd.” Rob closed the dairy in 1994 and gradually eliminated the broilers, as Pinnacle View Limousin took centre stage. Around the same time, Erin’s interest in cattle was growing, leading her to post-secondary schooling in the industry. “I decided that I wanted to pursue an education in farming and beef cattle,” she noted. “I got my diploma in agriculture production from Olds College (Alberta), and a degree in agriculture business at Olds as well.” Moving from 4H farm kid to an integral part of the family business has been a pleasure for Erin, who is married with her own family growing up on the farm. “I’m a full time mom and full time farmer and I plan on doing that as long as it’s feasible. I hope that my kids will continue on with the farm as they grow,” she said. The main farm is approximately 265 acres with the second plot of 180 acres just eight kilometers north. Rob with wife Cheryl; daughter Erin with husband Eric (Kishkan) and son Jeff with wife Amber, work together to keep things running. While the whole family pitches in, the day to day work and operations fall to Rob and Erin. “In the spring we organize who is going to which pasture,” commented Erin, “but it’s not a big deal.”

The Pinnacle herd grew with a 50 percent purchase of the dispersal of Two Horse Ranch in Alberta and 17 cow/calf pairs from the Top Meadow Farm’s program out of the western division. Because both were well known herds, Rob was confident of the impact the additions would have. “I think we can see it (Pinnacle View Limousin) growing and we want to increase the herd or maintain anywhere from 90 to 100 cows,” he said. “We’ve built it up over the years, but at the same time we want to increase the quality of the herd. Our goal is to look for a mother cow to outperform itself each and every year.” That passion for continuous improvement in the Limousin has also led Rob and Erin to assume roles in helping promote the breed at provincial and national levels. Erin was the first president of the Canadian Junior Limousin Association and is now the president of the B.C. Limousin Association. Rob is a past director of the Canadian Limousin Association and past president of the B.C. Limousin Association. Involvement in the associations was partially born out of the challenges inherent in farming in a remote region, but also from a need to get the word out about the breed. Rob recalled what the industry was like when he joined the Canadian association, “The cattle

industry as a whole was on the decline as far as numbers and breeders were concerned so the time I was there, my challenge was to try to reduce costs.”

Limousin Voice Christmas 2011  14

It wasn’t all cost-cutting drudgery though. Highlights during his tenure included the board’s decision to hire a manager committed to the breed and Rob’s position of Show and Sale Committee Chair. The picture was different with the B.C. association. “When we first started in the industry, the B.C. association was dormant, almost non-existent,” commented Rob. “We got together with some of the breeders and got the association going and it’s still going today. We didn’t make huge strides, but at least we kept our heads above water and kept ourselves known. I think we’ve weathered this storm so far and I think it’s on the way up.” Erin agrees that the cattle industry has a bright outlook ahead. With prices holding steady, she believes Limousin has the ability to be one of the top five breeds in Canada. “There is a challenge in every association in every province,” she noted. “But there is a challenge in B.C. to get together for meetings and field days and shows and that kind of thing. Everyone has really good intentions, but it’s hard to get everyone together simply because of the geography.” Recently, Erin was involved in the Pacific Invitational Sale in Williams Lake which saw 66 head from 30 consignors go through the sale ring. Not only did she serve as the Limousin breed representative at the sale, she also organized the sale consultants, the catalogue and the pedigree information. “I think it (the sale) was the first of its kind in B.C. ever,” said Rob proudly. “I thought that it was an excellent opportunity to market our genetics in B.C. because we didn’t have any other purebred female venue to market at and I wanted to be a part of it,” commented Erin. “We are definitely a minority in B.C. with the limo breed,” Rob said. “The sale in B.C. will encourage some of these guys to come out of the woodwork and hopefully join us in embracing the breed. That was one of the positives that came out of the sale was that we want to start promoting and selling some of our replacement females with B.C. – not just bulls.”

Still very active in his promotion of the breed, even though he claims to be semi-retired, Rob went on a May trip to France to see how the breed was founded and how the industry differs from that in Canada. “They have not varied in the genetic makeup at all,” he commented. “They’re testing their genetics, they go a little deeper than we (Canadian breeders) do. They have government support that we don’t have in Canada, so they have the opportunity to improve their genetics.” According to Rob, the Limousin is at the top of the cattle ranks in France; something which reconfirmed his confidence in the breed. He also noted that the French breeders were interested in the Canadian full blood program and have tried some of the Polled bloodlines. “It was interesting to see their differences and their cattle,” Rob summarized. “We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and met lots of other limo breeders from other parts of the world.” Erin puts their passion for the breed succinctly, “it’s a little bit about cattle, but it’s a lot about people.”

Benefits of Genomics From conception to consumption, genomics has begun to influence all stages of livestock production. The potential has already been demonstrated in the dairy industry, which currently benefits from increased profitability, higher yield and better health in its animals.

Benefits for livestock producers •

Bottom line – Reduced costs from efficient breeding and management: - 9-10% lower herd maintenance - 20-40% estimated financial gain from using genomics technologies in beef cattle • Improved breeding performance: - Improve traits that are lowly heritable or difficult to measure - Faster genetic improvement. Even with the best conventional breeding and reproduction technologies, it still takes five years to produce a new bull calf, rear it to sexual maturity and progeny-test its offspring. Traits such as tenderness and marbling can only be assessed after the animal is slaughtered, so it is no longer available for breeding. Using genomics tools could compress the entire cycle into just a few weeks, and have the first superior new calves born in little more than a year - Improved animal health. A new understanding of host-pathogen interactions based on enomics research offers the promise of improved vaccines and disease immunity, new gene-based targets for treatment, better response times to new threats and the potential to breed healthier animals - Selection for animals that are naturally calm and produce less appetite-reducing hormones will result in faster weight gains and fewer aggression-related problems - Feed efficiency. A genetic test would more than pays for itself by producing animals that grow faster on less feed (10-12% less feed intake) • Competitiveness. The American livestock industry is already using genomics-based technologies

Benefits down the value chain •

Safe, healthy meat. Breeding for animals that better respond to vaccination, carry a lower burden of animal-to-human organisms and need fewer antibiotics improves food safety throughout the food chain • Improved traceability. Genomic information and infrastructure can advance biosafety programs through DNA verified traceability, allowing rapid identification of disease out breaks or contamination in the food chain

Benefits for Canadians •

Positive environmental impact, for example: - 25-30% lower methane emissions - 15-17% lower manure nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium production • New high quality and healthy consumer foods and value added products • Advanced knowledge and access to well-paying jobs • Financial benefits • Better animal welfare. An increased demand for higher animal welfare standards places pressure on export countries like Canada. Genomics provides opportunities for enhancing animal welfare, for example by reducing or eliminating traits and behaviour, such as aggressiveness, that lead to preventable animal suffering

The Canadian Limousin Association is pleased to recognize the top show cattle in Canada for the year along with their sires and dams. To qualify, all show cattle must be a Canadian purebred or fullblood. Points were awarded at all shows with 30 Limousin head or more across Canada. Supreme competitions are also admissible for additional points, whether a Limousin show with 30 head or more took place or not. Congratulations to this year’s winners: Mitchell Farms, Koyle Farms, Nordal Limousin and Nostadt. It is interesting to note that Mitchell Farms promoted the Limousin breed at 19 shows in 2011! That adds up to many many kilometers of travel and a great commitment of time and resources! Thank you to all breeders who show Limousin cattle across the country. There is no better promotion than displaying the four legged proof of how good our cattle are! is good…damn good, as 2011 will go down as the “turning point” year in agriculture. Our fellow producers, both commercial and purebred finally have a smile on sale day; that “good feeling” has been a long time coming. Since Canadian Thanksgiving comes in early October when producers are consuming their turkey in the fields and rushing to get fall work finished before the first snow, it seems that our thankfulness comes more appropriately during the Yuletide season. We must all be grateful for the renewed optimism in the agricultural sector; the strength of Canada’s banking system and our country’s economy in general, as we read about the financial woes of other countries who are our export customers. Since much of our trade is on the export side of the ledger, the impending shortage of agricultural related commodities bodes well for all Canadians associated with agriculture. The Limousin breeders of Ontario hosted a very successful national show at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto during early November. The combination of cattle entries, breeder participation and wonderful Eastern hospitality made the breed proud. Hats off to all the organizers and volunteers as events such as these need a lot of unsung heroes, (in the background) keeping the wheels greased. It was very heart- warming to see youth from the Junior Association excel in the interbreed competition at the National Junior Beef Heifer Show at the Royal. Brad MacIntyre, Lucknow, Ontario showed the Reserve Champion female while Robert Enright, Renfrew, Ontario was chosen as Grand Champion Showperson at this very large show and a credit to the strength of youth in the breed. Several weeks later, it was disappointing to have no Limousin entries in the Canadian Junior Beef Extreme competition at Agribition. Presence is important in attracting new members, as we are more apt to attract breed enthusiasts that are sixteen, rather than sixty. Although the holiday season encompasses fellowship with family and friends; during this period of short days and long nights, breeders should take the opportunity to connect with past commercial customers. For some, this contact is out of one’s “comfort zone,” mostly fearing a bad report or an awkward conversation, but virtually everyone who sold their calves this fall received a healthy premium. Remember, commercial cattlemen take just as much pride in their achievements as breeders do, and you just might sell another bull because of your efforts. During these days of “winter blues,” it is an excellent opportunity to cleanup any registry issues, pull hair if necessary, update your whole herd enrolment and lay down breeding and marketing plans. Start planning pictures and space for advertising in the February bull issue, the most important of your breed publication. It is designed for you to find new commercial and purebred customers and is used as a reference guide throughout the year. Most importantly, enjoy the festive season…take your boots off and sit by the fire; relax cowboy… you deserve it….simply, because you survived the past ten years and there’s no turning back now! From our outfit to yours…, best wishes for an exciting year.

The 2011 National Show and Sale were held in Toronto on November 5th at the Royal Winter Fair. Once again, the Ontario Limousin Association did a fabulous job at rounding up volunteers, the key to a smooth running event. Junior Show Before the Royal Winter Fair opened, several breeds held junior shows. Twenty plus Limousin young enthusiasts participated for our breed, with winners as follow:

Champion Pee Wee Showman - Cole Gibson

Champion Junior Showman - Connor Rodger

Champion Intermediate and Reserve Overall Showman - Brad MacIntyre

Champion Senior and Overall Showman Kyle Payne

Reserve Pee Wee Showman - Carson Zwambag

Reserve Junior Showman - Melissa MacIntyre

Reserve Intermediate Showman - Carolyn Darling

Reserve Senior Showman - Melanie Gollinger

Open show Congratulations to all the exhibitors for the depth of quality on the animals exhibited. Judge Mark Hoge from Good Hope, Illinois had his work cut out. See complete results in the following pages. The major show sponsor of the open show was Master Feeds. Winners were presented with a director’s chair as a memento of the 2011 National. Fullblood show Once again, the Ontario breeders organized a Fullblood show that took place after the open classes. Congratulations to the female winners: Elm Grove Limousin with Elm Grove Yoko as Grand Champion and Hillside Farms for their reserve championship with Hillside Natasha. Future Limousin Royalty Classic The OLA organized a Future Limousin Royalty Classic in which any heifer calf or bull calf entered in the open show at the National Limousin Show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair was eligible to participate for a $50/animal fee. Norwich Packers of Norwich, Ontario contributed $500 to sponsor the class. There were 18 entries in which 15 were shown. 5 judges from various beef backgrounds and breeds were pre-selected to place the animals in the class. The scores were added up to determine the Classic Winner, Runner-up and Honourable Mention. All three winners were presented with a banner. The Classic winner won 30% of the total prize money, the Runner-up received 20% and the Honourable mention received 10%. The 40% balance went to the OLA as a fund raiser. The winners of the inaugural Future Limousin Royalty Classic are as follows: • Classic Winner - TMF Miss Lily 11Y, exhibited by Rail Line Farms & Top Meadow Farms • Classic Runner-Up - Ivy’s Your Love 33Y, exhibited by 3 Ridge Farms • Honourable Mention - WGL Yogurt 12Y, exhibited by Windy Gables Limousin The OLA would like to thank all of the exhibitors for supporting the inaugural Future Limousin Royalty Classic and a special thank-you to Norwich Packers for sponsoring the class. Canadian Limousin Association Award of Distinction The McPhails from Iona Station, Ontario were this year’s recipient of the Award of Distinction. Wayne and Anne, daughters Marilyn and Brenda were in attendance to be honoured. See the complete presentation in this issue of the Voice. After show pizza party The celebrations continued in the barn with a traditional pizza party sponsored in parts by the exhibitors, the Ontario Limousin Association and the Canadian Limousin Association. National Limousin Sale The sale was an integral part of the Royal Elite Sale, an all breed event. Lot 1, RLF Yardley 601Y who was declared Grand Champion Limousin Bull earlier in the show, started things off on the right foot. Over $30,000 in semen packages were sold as lot 1 in the sale. The Limousin outsold the other breeds in terms of average. On behalf of the National Show and Sale Chairman, Brian Lee, we thank all of you who participated in this year’s national events. Whether you were an exhibitor, a sponsor, a buyer, a volunteer or a spectator, your presence made it the success that it was. THANK YOU! We remind you that the 2012 National will be hosted by the Manitoba Limousin Association and is schedule to take place in Brandon next November. Royal National Junior Heifer Show The Royal Winter Fair puts on an extraordinary youth program where 4-H members from every Ontario County, Quebec and the Maritimes compete. This event has grown to a phenomenon of several hundred young people gathered at one place at one time. Competitors first show under their respective breed division or commercial division and then champions battle it out for an overall champion and reserve. There are also showmanship classes divided in age categories. In the Limousin champion female was HC Polled Duchess exhibited by Cole Robbins and the reserve was TMF Miss Lily 11Y exhibited by Melissa MacIntyre who was also the Reserve Grand Champion Showperson Overall. Congratulations Limousin representatives!!

Secret Service has taken over “main” herd sire duties this year … and we couldn’t be happier! We’ve had this great bull since 2007, and we’re now just seeing his potential. We’re getting bull calves that are everything we’ve ever strived for … and females that are amazing … with beautiful udders and very fertile! We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our 2011 bull customers! We’ve enjoyed meeting new ones as well. Thank you! A special thank you to Paul Verdegaal, from Lumby, B.C. … who bought our two females at the new “Pacific Invitational All Breeds Female Sale” here in B.C. It was a great success for British Columbia. We are pleased to present the Elite Dam awards for the second year since its revamp. These dams portrait the ideal scenario including calving ease, milk production and docility. Their performance is measured by their EPD’s.

The qualifying criteria are: • All Fullblood, Purebred, or percentage registered Limousin females on Whole Herd Enrolment • Must have raised at least 4 calves in the last 6 consecutive years. If the female raised 6 calves in 6 years, she receives the “Super Elite” status. • Must have above breed average EPD for Weaning Weight, Milk and Docility • Must have below breed average EPD for Birth Weight

Limousin Voice Christmas 2011  31

I am writing for your consideration of the CJLA annual grant for involvement by a youth in the Limousin breed. My name is Brad MacIntyre and I live in Lucknow, Ontario. I am sixteen years old and live on a mixed farm with my father, Paul and mother, Christine and my one sister, Melissa. We have cash crop land, pasture land, a boiler operation, cow/calf operation and background steers on pasture. We also export hay to the United States. We live in Bruce County which is known in Ontario as cattle country, as it has rolling acres and land that is suitable for pasture with lots of waterways that head to Lake Huron. We haven’t always had a cow/calf operation though as most of the beef end of the farm was feedlots. We backgrounded five hundred weight calves that we brought in from ranches in

B.C. each fall. We housed and fed these calves throughout the winter and had them on pasture the next summer and then sold them to finishing barns the next fall when the cycle would start again. There were always lots of barn chores when I was young. My interest in the Limousin breed began after I purchased four steers and grassed them in the summer and sold them in the fall of 2003. I lost money, so I knew there had to be a more profitable way to be a beef farmer. I took my money from these steers and headed to the Top Meadow Production Sale that year and purchased a bred yearling. Prior to going to that sale, I did some research talking to cattlemen in our area and looking at what was selling well in the local auctions. I also spent some time at the books researching the Limousin breed. This is what finally sold me on purchasing Limousin. I knew that the “Carcass Breed” was the way to go. This first purchase of mine has brought great recognition to our farm as it was awarded as one of the Elite Dam’s within the Limousin Breed this past year with the Canadian Limousin Association. My father knew I was interested in cattle at that point, so he decided to invest in a few more cows and this would be a great hobby for us. We now have over 140 females calving this year so I think the breed was definitely

the right choice. The influence of Limousin on my life has been huge. I have had a great time exhibiting and showing our cattle across Ontario over the last eight years. I have met many people and have learned a lot about the cattle business and the agriculture world. Some of the accomplishments and highlights of showing our Limousin cattle for me, is showing the champion Limousin at the Royal Agriculture Winter Fair National Junior Heifer Show in Toronto and winning the Charlie Watson Award for the Best Bred and Owned from all the Breeds. I enjoy working with the cows and studying their EPD’s and figuring out their matching for breeding. I plan to work within the cattle industry as an AI Tech and plan to go to school for that in the future. From the first cow in 1993, the Limousin has carved a future for me within the cattle industry. Brad MacIntyre

Hello, my name is Brandon Hollingsworth from Orono, Ontario. I’ve grown up and currently live on a farm where my family and I have been breeding Limousin cattle for many years now. I have successfully graduated Grade 12 from Clarke High School where I earned a bursary for being the only graduate taking a post secondary education in the Agriculture field. I am currently in my second year of college, attending Kemptville College where I am taking a course in the Agriculture sector to expand my knowledge in the beef cattle and agriculture industry. I was introduced to the Limousin breed by Dave Clark of DKC Limousin; he has shown me the great qualities that this breed has to offer. I bought my first 4H Limousin heifer from him, which I got Grand Champion breeding heifer at my 4H achievement day that fall. I have been in 4H for seven years now and am currently the youth leader for my local 4H beef club. I am currently

the past president for the Ontario Junior Limousin Association; being the president last year taught me leadership skills to help me with my teamwork skills. Showing and breeding Limousin cattle have been very rewarding for me over the years; I have made lots of friends throughout Canada and the United States. Being involved with this breed has given me so many opportunities, by being able to participate in the Ontario Provincial Show, The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, and many local summer and fall fairs. Also going to many sales every year gives me the opportunity to view and assess what type of cattle people are looking for in today’s industry. Last year I was offered the chance to go to The Canadian Junior Limousin Show and Congress in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan which I was very excited about; I made lots of new friends and learned so many new things from them. This year we held The Canadian Junior Limousin Show

Thank you to the Canadian Junior Scholarship committee for giving both myself, Katelynn Tedford, and all the juniors this opportunity to apply for a scholarship. I’m very proud to be a part of my grandfather’s heritage, who established “Circle T Limousin,” an operation situated in the southeast corner of Saskatchewan. This operation has been involved with the Limousin breed for just over forty years and is one of the nation’s first purebred Limousin herds. My family’s dedication to agriculture and to the Limousin breed has opened the doors to a variety of opportunities and experiences. The 4-H motto, “Learn to do by Doing,” is the foundation to being successful in every situation that has been presented to me. I’m a senior member of the Benson Beef 4-H Club showing purebred Limousin steers and heifers at the club Achievement Day as well as the Estevan Regional Show, for the past 12 years. I’ve won numerous heifer and steer championships as well as Grand Aggregate awards. Before 4-H, I would have never imagined getting up in front of a group or audience of people and presenting a speech. It turns out that I greatly enjoy this aspect of the 4-H program and have

been a provincial finalist five times in my 4-H career, capturing a provincial championship in 2010. I’m also an active member of the Canadian Junior Limousin Association and for the past five years I’ve attended conferences in both Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The experiences I’ve gained in the junior program have strengthened my marketing skills as well as elevated my ability to select and breed higher quality breeding stock. Also I have been given the honour in representing the Saskatchewan Limousin Association in all Saskatchewan Livestock Shows and Sales as the Saskatchewan Limousin Queen. I am developing a small group of quality, purebred Limousin females that I’ve exhibited in 4-H and at the Canadian Junior shows. These heifers along with a combination of a select group from the genetic base of my grandfather’s herd, has given me the genetic building block for a solid foundation. The wealth of knowledge that I’ve gained in the 4-H and Junior programs as well as the day to day experiences in working alongside family members, has given me the insight to the dedication and the work ethic necessary to be successful not only in the purebred

industry but also in life in general. In the fall of 2012, I’m planning on attending the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, in Saskatoon. Within the course of my studies I would like to further my education into the area of fertilization and more particular in the area of embryo transfer, a valuable tool in the expansion of my herd. Again I would like to thank the Canadian Junior Limousin Association for allowing me to submit this essay, and their contributions to the secondary education of fellow junior members. Katelynn Tedford

Congratulations to all who competed at the Royal Winter Fair. The Limousin Breeders showcased a great number of great Limousin Purebred and Fullblood animals. It sure was a fun week to end the Ontario show season. We started the show week off with a bang with our Junior Limousin Show. We had 24 entrants. Scott Mathews from Quebec was our judge and he worked through the age categories and sorted these winners to the top. The juniors were busy selling tickets on the Loaded Aluminum Showbox throughout the days at the Royal. The exciting draw was held at the Royal Elite Sale and the new proud owner of this show box is Erin McCaskie of Holland Centre. I’m sure this young man will make great use of all of the show supplies and will be showing off his shiny new aluminum showbox at all of the fairs next year. A big thank you to all who bought tickets and supported our junior activities and also a thank you to Bouchard Livestock for advertising this raffle and allowing it to be part of the Elite Sale Event. The Ontario Juniors have had a very busy 2011. We look forward to many snowy days ahead, when we can dream about our Limousin 4H projects for next year. At this time of year we reflect on our many blessings and we thank the many breeders, businesses and associations that support our Junior Association each year. We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Safe and Happy Holiday Season.

Wayne and Anne McPhail were introduced to the Limousin breed in 1973 when the decision was made to try Limousin bulls on their commercial cow herd. The following years saw their two daughters and two nephews show many Limousin sired animals at local fairs and steer competitions. This exposure and first-hand experience with Limousin sired cattle gave Wayne and Anne the confidence that they were on the right track. In 1975, Hilltop Farms made their first male and female purchases. Hilltop Farms was now established and gained world-wide recognition in the following years as a superior source for fullblood Limousin genetics. Wayne and Anne bred back to back winners at the National Bull Test as well as raising the “Excellor” bull who broke all previous records for yearling weight in 1988. Demand for Hilltop cattle grew. Their genetics were being exported around the world and the new customers loved the results! Wayne and Anne had created an international product that was a tremendous ambassador for their farm and our breed. Hilltop Farms experienced tremendous success in the National All-Canadian program as well. The trophy room walls are lined with pictures of bulls and females who earned the “All-Canadian” status. Some of their proudest moments were recognized right in their very building. Hilltop animals were awarded Grand Champion status on many occasions which resulted in Wayne and Anne McPhail receiving the ultimate award for any breeding program, Premier Breeder and Exhibitor of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Wayne and Anne may have dispersed their cow herd in 2003 but the Hilltop prefix can still be found in many prominent breed circles today. It is indeed an honour and privilege to present Wayne and Anne McPhail with the 2011 Canadian Limousin Association Award of Distinction.

By Gaylene Groeneveld HIGHLAND STOCK FARM HAS BEEN INVOLVED FROM THE BEGINNING For forty years Dr. Murray Jacobson of Shaughnessy, Alberta, has been in the business of embryo transplanting. And with more than four decades of veterinary work under his belt, he has decided to pull up the reins and call it quits. This is a story about the evolution of embryo transfer as told by Murray himself. Commercial embryo transfer in North America began 16 October, 1971. The new breeds of cattle had been arriving from Europe and unheard of prices were heralding a new era in the North American beef cattle industry. Calves from those first females were trading up to and exceeding $50,000. Was there a method of producing more than one offspring per year from these cows? Dr. David Dyrholm, a Calgary dentist, would have to be considered the “Father” of embryo transfer in North America. A technique had been developed by Dr. Tim Rowson et al. at the Animal Research Centre in Cambridge, England to super ovulate a cow and surgically collect the embryos, and David could see the potential of using this technique to produce more than one offspring per year from these valuable cows. David approached our Veterinary clinic in Calgary with the idea and would we be interested in being involved. You have to know David to appreciate his unrelenting drive and “can’t” has never entered David’s mind. Within three weeks he had converted a small shop into a surgery, arranged for one of the scientists from Cambridge to come and show us the procedure and had convinced the Federal Government to put two of their imported animals into the program. That was the beginning of Alberta Livestock Transplants, a joint venture with Dr. Dyrholm, his dental partner, Dr. Ted Metenko, Calgary lawyer, Stan Church, Dr. Bob Church and Rockyview Veterinary Clinic (Drs. Brian Edge, Wayne Burwash, Ed Moss and Murray Jacobson). It was a total surgical procedure for both the donor and the recipients. The animals were under general anesthesia, placed on their back and elevated to working height. The incision was made on the midline right in front of the udder and the uterus was exteriorized and secured. The flushing was done with the fluid being forced from the uterus, through the oviduct and collected at the fibril end. Flushing was done on day 5 post breeding so the embryos were still in the oviduct.

First 6 calves resulting from ET in North America

Highland Georgina and 15 resulting ET Calves

Limousin Voice Christmas 2011  39

The first client cow we flushed was a fullblood Limousin owned by the Federal Government. Six calves resulted from that flush and that was the beginning of commercial embryo transfer in North America. One of those calves called Trans Magic was sold at the Denver Stock Show the following year for $50,000. In 1972 we flushed a fullblood Limousin cow for Highland Stock Farms and that was the start of a Tim Matthews with first ET long term ET program that continues today. Many of calf at Highland you have probably seen the picture of 3 year old Tim with his arms around the resulting bull calf.

Embryos were collected and implanted into cows surgically

In 1975 we flushed the first Angus cow for Highland Stock Farms. Highland Georgina produced 17 good embryos, 15 resulted in pregnancies and entered the herd. It soon became apparent if these donor cows were to be flushed multiple times we had to switch to a non-surgical procedure. Dr. Wolfgang Lampeter, from Germany, had been working on a nonsurgical method of collecting and had devised a catheter similar to the ones we use today. I traveled to Japan to work with Dr. Sugai, who had been working on a non-surgical method of collecting embryos and also implanting in to the recipient. By the mid ‘70s, all donor flushing had switched to non-surgical but most of the implanting was done surgically through the flank. By the early ‘80s enough expertise had been gained and all implanting was also done non-surgical. The early ‘80s also saw the beginning of the freezing of embryos and successful thawing and implanting. This was a tremendous step forward because now it was possible to save embryos if there were insufficient recipients or if the donor failed to produce good embryos on a particular day, frozen ones could be thawed and implanted thus using the available recipients. Today freezing has become the norm in embryo transfer to stockpile embryos to be implanted during the normal breeding season and for the export of Canadian genetics around the world. Embryos can be shipped frozen in a liquid nitrogen container anywhere in the world for a fraction of the cost of shipping live cattle. Synchronization is something we take for granted today but in the beginning we had no method of synchrony so we had to run a large herd of recipients so that on any day we would have some in estrus. Donor cows were given pregnant mare serum(PMSG) or follicle stimulating hormone(FSH) on day 15 or 16 of their cycle and you hoped they would come into estrus at 21 days. The first prostaglandin we started using came from the Ono Corp. in Japan and cost $1.00/mg and it took 40 mg to bring a cow into estrus so we could only use it on the donors. The Upjohn Corp. came out with Prostin which was a natural prostaglandin but still very expensive. Finally synthetic prostaglandin came on the market and the price started to drop to where we could synchronize recipients as well. Limousin Voice Christmas 2011  40

The late ‘70s saw the beginning of on farm embryo transfer. The ET team brought their mobile unit to the farm, collected the donor and transferred the embryos. This substantially reduced the cost to the purebred operator. Originally the surgical procedure cost $1500 to collect the donor and we sold the pregnant recipients at ninety days for $2500. In 1979, Dr. Darrel DeGrofft and I started Bova Tech Livestock Ltd. and begantravelling all over Western Canada doing embryo transfer. Over the next few years several other firms started providing the mobile service and so ET was totally transformed from a surgical suite procedure to an on farm service provided at a cost that was within the budget of all purebred breeders.

Murray flushed three cows at Highland Stock Farms on October 16, 40 years to the day that commercial embryo transfer began in North America

Highland Stock Farms has been my longest continuous client, nearing 40 years of embryo work. Don Matthews was at the helm when I started, then Rob took over the reins and now Tim has continued the tradition of raising good cattle. They have seen the metamorphosis of embryo transfer from the surgical days to the way it is done today. It has been a pleasure for Marilyn and I to work for the Matthews all these years and we thought it fitting to celebrate the 40th anniversary by flushing 3 of the Highland Stock Farms cows on the 16th of October, 2011.Thanks for the memories. Tim notes, “Many of our high sellers at our sales have been the result of embryo transplant conducted by Dr. Murray Jacobson.” Tim and Rob sum up their professional and personal relationship with Murray this way, “He’s been a good friend, we enjoy him as a person, and we wish him the very best in his retirement and future endeavors.”

I hope that everyone was able to catch up with friends at all of the fall shows this year. I would like to congratulate all of the participants who represented the Limousin breed at all of the shows throughout the year. Our junior board has been finalized, and here it is. We will have Dillon Hunter as president, Jayden Payne as vice president, Dana Carpenter as treasurer, Melanie Gollinger as secretary, I will be the press reporter, and our directors at large are Cassidy Matthews, Bailey McConnell and Katelyn Tedford. Also stepping into the adult advisor role will be Terry Hepper. The scholarship winners of the CJLA applied for scholarship have been determined, and the recipients for this year are Brandon Hollingsworth, Katelynn Tedford and Brad Macintyre. I wish everyone a safe calving season, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The Alberta Limousin Association held its Annual General Meeting and Pacesetter Sale the first weekend in December in Olds, AB. It feels like it has become a tradition for snow and cold weather to follow these events no matter the location and of course this year was no different with snow falling and less than average road conditions. However, that did not keep breeders away and the stands were full when the hammer fell on the first animal in the ring. The sale was very successful, congratulations to all consignors for bringing out a strong set of cattle and thanks to all bidders and buyers for supporting the sale. Earlier in the day the AGM was held, although the crowd was somewhat smaller for the meeting business was still done. Members in attendance approved the motion to raise membership fees to $50/year. This will help the ALA continue to advertise the association and the Limousin breed within the province. If you missed the meeting and would like to renew your membership for the 2012 year please contact Donna Olson to pay your membership or email the ALA at albertalimousin@gmail.com. The ALA has also revamped its website to serve our members better, visit www.albertalimousin.ca to see the new site and take advantage of the event listings and sale barn pages which are complimentary to our members. Submit your information today to advertise your upcoming events or genetics you have for sale. The ALA board saw minimal changes this year with Donna Olson and Carriann Johnson staying on the board after completing their first three year term. Wayne Burgess also completed his term on the board and will be remaining on the board as Past President. Thank you to Gary Driechel our out-going Past President for his numerous years of service on the ALA board. Congratulations to Scott Bodell who will be joining the Board of Directors. Following the AGM the board met to determine the new executive which is as follows: President – Carriann Johnson; Vice President – Mark Porter; Secretary – Barb Miller; Treasurer – Donna Olson; Past President – Wayne Burgess. Directors: Brittany Papenhuyzen, Scott Bodell, Jackie Payne, Kevin Stopanski & Frank Murphy The ALA would also like to announce and congratulate Cottage Lake Livestock as the 2011 recipients of the Purebred Breeder of the Year Award. The Papenhuzen family from Stony Plain have been involved in the cattle industry for over 30 years and have been great supporters of the Limousin breed handling the Limousin promotional material for numerous years. Laura, Brittany, Katrina and Lindsay currently operate a small herd that is centered around raising functional, practical cattle. The Papenhuyzen crew can be found at many shows throughout the fall and have been very competitive in the show ring and have represented the Limousin breed in numerous Interbreed competitions over the last few years which is only one of the reasons which make them the 2011 ALA Purebred Breeder of the Year recipients. The ALA weekend was a great way to kick off the holiday season with the Limousin family! Thank you to all who came out, although the meeting had a small crowd it was evident come the evening that the Limousin breed is still going strong in Alberta. With the optimism surrounding the cattle industry in general the board hopes this will help rejuvenate some of the ALA activities for the upcoming year, now is the time we want to stay active and have a presence within the industry so be sure to take part in ALA activities and maintain your membership within the association. For more information and full AGM reports visit the ALA website at www.albertalimousin.ca. Wishing all Limousin breeders and enthusiasts a Happy Holiday season and all the best as we enter 2012! Bus trip to Toronto Twenty two enthusiasts participated to the Toronto bus trip. We enjoyed some cultural visits such as the CN Tower and Chinatown, as well as we farm visits. We thank John Post of Posthaven Farms and Kym Anthony (owner) and Mike Geddes (manager) of Top Meadow Farms for their warm welcome. Anne Brunet-Burgess, CLA general manager was also on board as our official guide and translator. Thank you Anne, for accompanying the group. The Limousin National Show and Sale at the Royal Winter Fair were the highlight of the trip. The participants noticed the huge of influence of black Limousin genetics in Ontario and in Western Canada. Coming events Please note that the Quebec Limousin Association Annual General Meeting will take place on Saturday, March 24th at Motel Blanchet in Drummondville. We will start at 1 pm. We welcome all interested parties. The QLA is looking for a host for the 2012 field day. If you are interested, please contact the president, Mr. Serge Dethier.

The farm visits took place on a beautiful day. Pictured here is Top Meadow Farms, viewed from the road. Les participants ont eu une très belle journée pour les visites de ferme. Ici, l’emplacement de la ferme Top Meadow vu à partir de la route.
