Key Ranch is a family ranching operation located in Central Saskatchewan approximately 40 minutes West of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Key Ranch has raised registered and commercial Black Angus cattle since 1994. Since inception our cow herd has been bred and selected for efficiency and hardiness, resulting in the production of the highest quality seed stock and exceptional performing feedlot cattle.

The Key Ranch cow herd is expected to be functional and efficient. Calving in April, moving to tame seeded pastures in the early spring and summer months, weaning a profitable calf and moving to native grass pastures in the late fall into mid-winter. Under this type of management system mother nature will point out any weakness and cull decisions are made accordingly.

Key Ranch has developed an ideal herd that will produce seed stock able to thrive in the extreme climates of Western Canada and the Northern and Central United States.

Key Ranch seed stock and feeder cattle have proven themselves from the rugged ranch country of Northern Alberta, feedlot alley in Southern Alberta, Southern Ontario and the large commercial feedlots of Kansas and Northern Texas.

KEY RANCH takes pride in our cowherd. We strive to produce low maintenance, sound, functional, productive females. With that in mind we must not forget we are in the BEEF business. The “art” to breeding profitable females is to produce a low input female that will produce a feeder calf that can go on to yield and grade at acceptable percentages and weights to produce profit for the FEEDLOT and PACKER. On the other side of the fence that female should produce a replacement female that can emulate her efficiency and productivity to produce a profit for the COMMERCIAL RANCHER. Here in lies the “art” of breeding cattle, as the two sectors of the BEEF business ranchers need to satisfy, do not always compliment one another.

At KEY RANCH we strive to identify genetics that strike a balance with maternal efficiency and growth oriented traits. If a breeder is not conscious of TRAIT BALANCE it does not take long before a herd can lose efficiency for a specific sector. At KEY RANCH we strive to maintain TRAIT BALANCE in our cow herd.
