WELCOME Welcome to the 14th Annual Johnson Livestock Bull Sale. We are a family run farm that enjoys working with the best cattle we can raise. The Angus breed certainly fits well in our expectations of running big numbers with minimal labour. We have been in expansion mode since the farm began in 1905 and we don’t see that changing in the near future.

Each year there are new challenges, but we continue to have a very positive outlook on the future of our industry. In the JL Fall Celebration of Angus magazine I had mentioned looking forward to calving out 1200 head in 2020.

Well, we exceeded that number by a long way and with the fraud situation in the last month, our only regret is that we didn’t have it all invested in the herd.

When we look at the premiums our Angus calves continue to bring in, it’s not hard to be enthused. Every day on the market, the black steers and heifers continue to be the highlight, often being the only cattle mentioned. D&N Livestock, once again, sold several liner loads of steer calves (brothers to their sale heifers) at just under $1600, on a February delivery, to the same customer, for the fourth year. The demand for these top cut Angus cattle just continues to grow. We don’t just breed Angus cattle; we also feed and finish them and there is no question in our minds which work the best. Most importantly, the consumer is demanding Angus. When we look at the market demands in the next few years, the only option is up and that excites us. In our minds, every heifer calf in Canada should be bred this year, and half the canola fields should be getting seeded back to grass.

Throughout the footnotes you will notice that I refer to “Elite” dams. We have the most Elite dams in the CAA herdbook. To become an Elite dam, a cow has to raise a calf indexing higher than 105 each year, as well as maintain a 365-day calving interval for a minimum of five years. In our minds fertility and performance are two of the most critical traits to cattle profitability. Many of our Elite dams have Elite daughters and granddaughters, proving the strength of our cow families. We also believe that we have more cows producing herd bulls well into their teens, than any other ranch, again proving the sustainability of these genetics.

This will be one of the first and largest offerings of President sons in Canada, we are excited to showcase them for your appraisal.

Of course, we continue to have big groups of Resource, Renown, Four Season, Final Answer and Altitude bulls. We really believe in the consistency of line bred cattle. So, if you like your bulls for the last few years, we are confident in selling you full brothers to use on your bulls’ daughters.

We are constantly evaluating each aspect of our operation and with that in mind we are making a few changes to our bull sales. You may have noticed we have slightly reduced the numbers, for this sale. We enjoy the March bull sale season but recognize that many of these bulls are not used until summer.

With that in mind we are planning an online June bull sale featuring another group of yearlings, as well as selected two year olds.

Another change will be the delivery, we plan on delivering the bulls in the few weeks following the sale. If you are unable to take them at that time, they will be available for pickup later. Please note your preference on your invoice. The volume discounts will of course remain the same.

We run big numbers of cattle and in these size groups it forces the top ones to compete.

We know if we broke down our herd into smaller sized groups our bulls would be heavier, but these cows are run like many of our big customers and the top ones do come to the surface. We will walk 50-60 herd bulls this year along with our AI program, so we are very familiar with what it takes to get the cows bred.

With this group we have sold and transferred over 2050 bulls in and are extremely grateful for the strong support we have received. Many of these customers have become close friends and we value that trust. We thank you for the confidence you have put in our program.

Together we planned the breedings, watched them calve and took each weight, so there is no one more familiar with these bulls than both of us.

FROM THE DESK AT T BAR Welcome to the 14th Annual Spring Bull Sale here at JL. This large cowherd has risen to the top on a regular basis year to year for registrations and transfers within the breed and has become known country wide for superior Angus cattle.

The 107 bulls on offer represent the strength of this excellent cowherd with many 1/2 and 3/4 brothers on offer. The lead sire group in this year’s sale are the Presidents. This curve bending sire is extremely popular and I do believe that this sale will offer as many President sons in one location at one time than any other in the country. Truly a feature of the spring run! Also you will see many Altitude sons which gives a different twist in pedigree for the long standing customers here at JL. S A V Renown continues to make the ideal type of cattle as you will see his influence and also a dozen or so Final Answer sons that have the sure fire heifer bull ratings!

Before I conclude I would just like to touch on the cowherd that backs this very good

pen of bulls. During summer months and pasture tours with the guys here at JL I can’t stress enough of the beautifully made cows that roam the pastures. Many Four Season, Eliminator, Bismarck, Net Worth, Final Answer and Renown daughters that have picture perfect udders and maintain amazing body score while producing these pound crushing bull calves. The culling program on a cowherd this large is very strict and accurate. All in all, just know you’re buying a bull or bulls from more than a solid foundation that is built for profit and success.

Getting to Know Gaby

In March 2015, Gaby showed up here at the farm to buy some rabbits that I was selling.

Little did she know she would be signing on for life here at Johnson Livestock. We love the smile that Gaby brings to the farm every day and she has become a valuable part of our operation.

Gabrielle Wilson grew up in Magag, Quebec where she loved to camp, go to the lake, play rugby and spend time with her horse that she boarded outside of the city. Gaby had not spoken a word of English until she graduated at the age of 16. She began attending the Champlain Regional College for the next three years to play rugby and earn a degree in Health Sciences. Being an English school she had to learn English rapidly. She went on to take one semester of Chemistry at the University of Sherbrooke before going back to her Aunt’s tack shop that she had worked at since she was fourteen. Retail wasn’t active enough for Gaby so she took a six month tile course and ended up winning bursaries because she was a woman studying construction. When she’s

not here at JL or working at the auction on Friday’s she continues to run Gaby’s Tiling. “I do it for people because it makes them happy,” she says, “they show me what they want and I make it happen.”

Because Gaby could translate, she came out to Saskatchewan in 2013 on a trip with her friends who were purchasing some Blue Roan Belgian horses. She loved the people here and heard that there were jobs available so she headed to Saskatchewan later that same year.

Gaby found a job at the local feedlot and auction mart. One year later she came to buy some rabbits from me and asked dad if we had work available. Since then she has been a part of the Johnson Livestock team, running equipment every day and working with the cattle. In 2017 Gaby married Ross Wilson and they have made their home in Windthorst. She loves small town living because of the pace and everyone being so kind. “I’m just happy here. It feels like home.”

Each animal will sell to the highest bidder... no by-bidding will be permitted. Disputes - Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved in dispute. If no further bidding is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision on all disputes will be final.

BREEDER’S GUARANTEE...

All bulls sold are guaranteed breeders by the owners. We guarantee to provide you with a sound breeding bull. Should any bull fail to be an unsatisfactory breeder, he will be replaced with a bull of equal value, or a credit will be given toward the purchase of another bull.

If you have a problem with your bull please notify us immediately.

Under no circumstances will the seller be liable for more than the purchase price of the animal.
