The goal for any livestock producer, commercial or purebred is to produce more pounds of calf per cow unit each year. Purebred breeders annually infuse fresh genetics into their program, in order to provide ranchers and farmers with genetics that will give them more calf at weaning and females of replacement quality. Breed associations have spent a lot of breeder funds to develop and upgrade the selection tool EPD (expected progeny differences) to assist producers in selecting sires with a higher degree of predictability, whether you are looking for performance, calving or maternal strengths. Learn to use these tools and don’t be afraid to ask anyone on staff for explanations.

This fifth annual event is packed full of genetic opportunities availing you to move your program forward. Grinalta Farms is pleased to be part of this sale. We have been in the business since 1973 and were fortunate to be in the first German and Austrian imports to Canada. We were also fortunate to achieve the first mutation polled F.F. EDC Pol Magnum 1B born in North America of strong genetics. We have been incorporating the best horned genetics to keep the quality at its highest. We believe our polls are very much in par with the horned. We are exporting semen and embryos worldwide. Grinalta’s HP Ultra 940 with very little progeny had the highest gaining bull out of all Simmental and Simmental crosses and the second highest of all breeds at a test station in the U.S. – over 5 lbs./day indexing 130. All our sale offerings stem from these genetics and have generated our customer’s big dividends. Our goal is your success. These bulls are grown out on grass, wintered, self-fed on haylage backgrounder screening based ration – 64% TDN – 13% protein. Here’s a bull we can’t say enough about. I, Rueben, fell in love with a small herd of roanish milk cows I noticed along the road back in the 1960’s. I was so impressed, I stopped and made a deal with the farmer to AI his cows and buy back the calves. I got the shock of my life when I delivered ‘pail bunters’ in the fall weighing 800-900 lbs. I kept breeding this line to purebred status and even after all these years...they are still our most outstanding genetics. I was told that when you look up the EPDs on one of our matriarch cows, IE 104D (grand dam to Macho Elite 945D and twice in his pedigree), from this foundation that she ranks eighth highest in EPDs in the entire Simmental breed. Sire, Elite 79U, recently had a son achieve highest gaining bull on test in PEI for Wade Loewen. We have been AI’ing for 50+ years and the only purebred bull that “holds a light” to Elite 79U is the Westcott bull. Elite 79U is deceased and when this son of his came along, we were so impressed we kept him back last year to use in our own herd. He is phenomenal but we have too much of his line in our herd so we decided to share him with the industry. We are reserving the right to draw on farm semen on him at the buyer’s convenience and at the seller’s cost.

Colossal has done a super job on both bulls and females. Probably the deepest, thickest, beefiest bull we have ever seen. He is so massive that he resembles a Belgium Blue! Good, big feet, correct legs. Never used on heifers but never had any problems on cows. Don’t remember even pulling a calf. Great disposition. Hard bull to fault.

Probably the most impressive, exciting purebred bull in the breed since he walked out of the sale ring in 2016 fetching $165,000. His progeny are deep, thick, soggy made performance cattle. He is proving to be one of most consistent bulls in the breed. In my opinion, Westcott is a ‘freak of nature’ like Northern Dancer or Secretariat. Once in a lifetime type of bull. There were only limited semen packages offered on Westcott holding him exclusive for two years...so there isn’t a lot of progeny available. He is a definite herd improver!

Welcome to the annual Jeans and Genetics Bull Sale. What a year it has been. I thought I had lived through bad droughts before but never imagined I would see how severe things could get. From the last snowfall in the first week of April to the first week of September, when winter hit again with a large dump of snow, we only had 1 ½” of moisture all year. I have never felt so sorry or worried for our cows. With no pasture, grain, straw and very little hay at home, things were very bleak. Fingers crossed, we hope the worst is over and 2019 is as good as 2018 was bad. We would like to thank all previous buyers and bidders, our friends and neighbors for all your help to get us through this year. Without your support we would not be able to do what we (I) love and it is greatly appreciated! It is also in times of despair that true humanity is shown and it is very humbling. Thank-you. Phantom’s dam, Sirene, or as I call her B2, was a high selling heifer we bought from Beechinor Bros. in the 2015 Fleckvieh Equation Sale. Phantom has been a favourite of mine all year. He carries the likes of many top sires in the industry and some of my favorites. Don’t judge him by my lack of photography skills. You really will notice him in the pen. He’s dark cherry red with large goggles, big barrelled and good feet and nuts.

B2 has a beautiful udder and with his sire being United, you know he should pass that onto his daughters. B2 has another United bull calf at her side this year and will be bred United again with the hope she will give me a heifer. It’s a real pleasure to bring this bull to the sale this year. Should be Fantastic Pussy Cat. I know I probably say this every year, but I really believe that this is the best bull I have ever raised. If I were to never raise cattle again, I would be satisfied that I accomplished what I set out to do. This bull has everything going for him. A real breeder’s bull in the making. Length, big barrelled, wider than a tanker truck, big feet, big nuts and walks well. A weaning weight of 1005 lbs. on August 19 with no creep on the worst recorded year for us is pretty incredible.

Even though I have a few cows that have raised some really good offspring and are top cows in the herd, “Beasts” mother, Salem, has taken the title of having raised the best bull and the best heifer ever in my herd. Salem herself is a problem free cow with a beautiful udder and good feet. Some may knock him for the white on him, but his maternal sister that I just mentioned is solid black cherry red with large goggles. As a second calver, she is as big as the biggest cows in my herd, deep bodied and loads of length.

Salem has a United bull calf at side with loads of pigment and blaze face. I need another bull this year and debated to use him, but I want to be committed to bringing my best to the sale.

Dakota has been Steve’s favorite in the bull pen this year. He admires his coloring, length of spine, depth of body, big nuts and calving ease.

His dam, Jojo, has had a couple of bulls in the sale the last couple of years going to Randy Archibald of Rosalind and Rodney Croy of Rocky Mountain House. Jojo really puts everything she has into raising her calves and it shows. I think Dakota is what the commercial cattleman is looking for. If he is half as good as his sire, Indiana, he will be in your herd for years to come.

The first thing you may notice with Cisco is that he has a larger birth weight. His mother, Mandy, pushed him out in about two and half pushes from start to finish. If I hadn’t seen how quickly she calved, he would have had a ring on him faster than Beyonce. She’s a 1900 lb. cow any day of the week. Having a 90 lb. calf out of her would be comical. One of the longest spined cows in the herd, she passes that onto Cisco. He’ll be able to go out and breed more of those large cows. Mandy had a granddaughter sell in the Western Harvest Sale this fall going to Steve and Christel at Starwest Farms and has had many offspring sell as well in the bull sales in previous years. Loads of pigment on both sides of this pedigree.

This is another bull that you can’t judge a book by its cover or picture rather. He is much better than his picture shows. Cowboy comes from a black cherry colored cow who passes that coloring onto her calves.

Cowboy is one of the friendliest bulls in the pen. Tic Tac’s daughter has a bull calf out of our new herd sire, Prince Charles, that we bought from Rendevous Farms last spring and I already have him picked as one of my favourites of the year. With Indiana going back to Champs Romano, should make Cowboy a calving ease bull that will be in your herd for years to come.

Road Hammer may be the smallest and youngest bull in our offering this year but I think he’s got a lot of potential to be a great herd bull once he matures. From a small cow who is probably 1050 lbs. soaking wet but has one of the best udders in the herd and can wean a bull off at 817 lbs. at weaning in August is nothing to sneeze at. The one thing I really like about his sire, Indiana, is that I think his offspring are going to be in the herd for a very long time and Road Hammer should be no exception. It may be a little unfair to him to be placed with pen mates larger than him, but I think if you give him a chance, you will not be disappointed.

Terms & Conditions Terms

The terms of the sale are cash or cheque, payable at par at the sale location. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement has been made; no invoicing on buyers in attendance, unless previous arrangements have been made. Every animal sells to the highest bidder and in cases of disputes, the auctioneer’s decision will be final. Current exchange rates will be announced sale day. All monies are in Canadian funds.

Bidding

Each animal will sell to the highest bidder... no by-bidding will be permitted. Disputes - Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved in dispute. If no further bidding is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision on all disputes will be final.

Liabilities

All persons attend the sale at their own risk. The seller, facility owner and sale manager assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents that occur. It is understood that T Bar C Cattle Co. (2013) Ltd. is acting only as a medium between buyer and seller and is not responsible for any failure on the part of either party to live up to his obligations. Neither does T Bar C Cattle Co. (2013) Ltd. assume any financial obligations to collect or enforce collection of any monies between parties and any legal action that may in exceptional cases be taken must be between the buyer and the seller. T Bar C Cattle Co. (2013) Ltd. assumes no responsibility for any credit extended by the seller to the buyer. The buyer must look to the seller for fulfillment of all guarantees and representations made hereunder.

Rights and Obligations

All announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay close attention to such disclosures.

The above terms and conditions of the sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller and be equally binding to both. Resale of animals following purchase in this sale shall constitute a separate transaction and the rights and obligations of the two parties connected thereto are not covered by the terms and conditions of this sale.

Announcements

All bulls sold are guaranteed breeders by the owners. We guarantee to provide you with a sound breeding bull. Should any bull prove to be an unsatisfactory breeder, he will be replaced with a bull of equal value, or a credit will be given toward the purchase of another bull. If you have a problem with your bull please notify us immediately. Under no circumstances will the seller be liable for more than the purchase price of the animal.

Exception Guarantee

In cases where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques after the sale, this guarantee shall be null and void.

Certificate of Registration

Bidders unable to attend the sale may phone, mail or wire their bids and instructions to the sale managers, auctioneer or special representatives. Bids must be received in sufficient time prior to the sale.

Delivery

We will assist in arranging transportation wherever possible.

Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. $100 rebate on bulls taken home sale day. Bull must be insured by buyer.

Insurance

Will be available sale day. We strongly recommend that insurance is purchased for full value.

Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Simmental Association unless otherwise specified. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer for each animal after payment has been made.
