You Ought To Know. . .
A lot of water has passed under the bridge, since the first World Hereford Conference was staged in 1951. The mere fact of travelling across the globe to attend was a venture in itself. Trans-Atlantic travel was by ocean vessel or airline, which was relatively new in the commercial sector; in Canada the main airline was Trans-Canada Airlines (later becoming Air Canada in 1965) and Canadian Pacific Airways. Therefore the establishment of a world Hereford organization with countries in different stages of development and several rebuilding after World War II was truly an amazing accomplishment. Communication and reply would have been tedious and very time consuming. You can be sure that authenticity of genetics was questioned, along with breed characteristics, as each region of the world had their own preference; but the initial conference set a standard for Herefords and their associations to abide by. As we come to 2012 and the 16th World Hereford Conference, many things have changed but mostly with the world around us. Authenticity remains to be monitored and such records are virtually available to any country in the world. Exchange of Hereford genetics (whether through live species, embryology or semen) is commonplace worldwide. It is not at all strange today to see foreign breeders travel to other countries for sales and major shows in order to learn and seek out new genetics and most importantly, new ideas in production. Each country’s association has the same goal, to increase member market share. This particular task has become more difficult since other breeds throughout the world have also moved forward with their own competitive goals. Hence, these conferences are designed to share ideas but most importantly, motivate the world Hereford community. Travel to these events is rapid with the only difficulty being ...to clear airport security since 911.
The big change is that technology has far surpassed “open range” thinking. In my life span, we have gone from crank phones to dial phones, to touch phones, to fax machines, to cell phones and emails and whoa! No, I do not have a blackberry or smart phone but mostly because I`m a crusty old non-conformist, too stubborn to change; believing in reading an actual newspaper and print advertising, mostly because I refuse to run a computer line into my bathroom. New technology is truly designed for the younger demographic group, the livestock leaders of tomorrow and (get used to it, old man) because it is the way of the future. Breeders and associations will have to be on board and up to date to maintain and increase market share. This younger demographic group will go to where the action and glamour is. Supplying nourishment for world population gets put higher each year on the United Nations Assembly and various government agendas. Since we cannot manufacture new land, the challenge to be more effective in production is crucial. Food and water will be more valuable than oil in maintaining world peace; hence, agriculture will be a dominant player in repairing the recession the globe is currently in. It will be fashionable and lucrative to be a farmer ...yes, I said a farmer.
Herefords Today World Issue 2012 12
Since this conference is to exchange ideas and as it’s being held in Canada this year, we get to strut our product; breeders must take advantage of this opportunity to meet and learn from fellow world breeders. Several countries represented have larger registries, while others have done more technological testing; thus, giving us an opportunity to learn. Granted everyone`s goal is to find and expand their personal market share through onsite sales, but we must look at the bigger picture. What is various country protocol in reference to health and importation ... what are the selective performance traits commercial producers use most in your country....what are your health policies on administration of antibiotics for growth in animals on feed (USDA April announcement)... does your market demand horned or polled? For the Hereford breed to survive, thrive and increase world market share, we must learn more of their experiences. Each country is a competitor on the basis of meat trade; they are only allies in the exchange of genetics and ideas. The world of electronics is your best connection to customers around the globe. If your website is not current, get current, as many of the attendees are experienced and will take back ideas to share with their next generation, who have been flying the flag ship, while the seniors were away having fun. Yes, the world will be watching in July, but they will study us for years to follow, especially the demographic group who will be the future leadership. As you attend the 16th World conference, go equipped with business cards, a note book and an open mind. We are in an era of exciting times, times where new membership will be added, rewards will be remunerated for elite seed stock and most importantly, a few more people will get the John Wayne bug. Enjoy the excitement of summer. If time permits, plan to be a part of the T Bar Invitational; if not, support it because it is aimed at that young demographic group of enthusiasts!

Like the current year, 1976 was a leap year; giving Canadians one extra day of net take home pay, after the government’s share. Pierre Elliot Trudeau was Prime Minster of the nation; Eugene Whelan, famous for his green cowboy hat, headed the ministry of agriculture. South of our borders, Gerald Ford was American president and defeated that November by Jimmy Carter, the first leader from the Deep South since the civil war. The United States saw the dawn of the Apple Computer Company, Microsoft was officially registered, the first laser printer was introduced by IBM and the first commercial Concorde Jet Canadian Delegates - Carl Schielke, Duncan Porteous & Gordon McGibbon made its debut. While in Australia, Random Breath Testing was introduced and cigarette and tobacco advertising was banned on Australian television and radio. Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver” won raves at the box office, the top entertainers were the Ramones, the first Punk Rock Band; teenagers were rocking to Abba’s “Dancing Queen,” cowboys and cowgirls were dancing to Mickey Gilley’s “The Girls All Get Prettier at Closing Time” or Willie and Waylon’s “Good Hearted Woman.” Conference Delegates
In the sporting world, hockey fans watched the Montreal Canadiens, led by the speedster Yvan Cournoyer, sweep the Herefords Today Spring 2012 22
attendance at the bull show was 2300, while 1800 Hereford enthusiasts watched the female show. Philly Flyers in four; the Cincinnati Reds did the same to the New York Yankees capturing the baseball crown and on March 26th, the Toronto Blue Jays were created. On July 17 the Summer Olympics began in Montreal, Quebec. The famous CN Tower opened in Toronto, Ontario; the Eaton’s catalogue was discontinued and the Canadian Government voted to abolish the death penalty. Minimum wage was $2.30 an hour, the average automobile sold for $5400.00, postage was 13 cents for a standard letter, you could gas up at the pumps for 26 cents a litre, buy a loaf of bread or a “Big Mac” for 30 cents and you could purchase a candy bar for 15 cents. Agricultural commodity prices were under pressure and deteriorated as the year progressed. Wheat traded in the $2.75 to $3.00 range, corn was around $2.40 a bushel and fat steers averaged $42.00 per hundred. The leading beef breed in Canada, Hereford, maintained the largest membership and registry and continued an annual rapid growth as every young man’s dream was to be a Hereford breeder. In the spring of that year, the famous Calgary Bull Sale sold 540 bulls for an average of $2037.00 and set a record for the high selling bull (which would be broken several times) at $92,000.00 for Domino Standard 50F consigned by John and Sharon Fulton, Carstairs, Alberta and purchased by Little Red deer Hereford Farm, Innisfail, Alberta and Blume Ranches Ltd., Castor, Alberta. Canada held two world class events, the Summer Olympics and the 7th World Hereford Conference organized by the Canadian parent body and hosted by the Province of Alberta. Under the reign of Premier Peter Lougheed, Alberta was the fastest growing Province in the country and even in the British Commonwealth. The 7th World Hereford Conference was an overwhelming success, an accomplishment made by the Canadian Hereford Association staff, its breeders, sponsors and the huge core of volunteers who aided in making it an historic event. It was estimated that nearly 15,000 Hereford people attended three weeks of Hereford tours; the conference was held in Banff and the World Hereford Conference International Show was held at the Calgary Stampede. It was also estimated that
The conference, held at the Banff Springs Hotel had nearly a thousand registrants. World Hereford Council Secretary General described the event as the largest conference of pedigree livestock producers ever held in the history of livestock production, despite the airline strike which had begun prior to the event. The conference chairman was Jim Lewthwaite, secretary-manager of the Saskatchewan Hereford Association and one of the co-founders of Canadian Western Agribition. Canada was represented by delegates Carl Schielke, Carstairs, Alberta, Canadian President at the time and director J. Gordon McGibbon, Lachute, Quebec. The Canadian Advisor was Duncan Porteous, who had been newly appointed Canadian Hereford Association Secretary-Manager just the year prior, and organizer/co-ordinator of the events during the conference. Special recognition was made to W.J. Edgar, Innisfail, Alberta who was instrumental in the formation of and attended the first World Hereford Conference held in 1951. The Swedish Hereford Breeders Association was admitted to full membership in the World Hereford Council while applications for membership were brought forward by Finland and France. The business agenda of the meeting covered a variety of topics which ranged from name changes of animals in other country registries to chromosome research, bluetongue testing, A.I. rules and registry between participating countries, performance and progeny testing, carcass evaluation and carcass judging systems, accepted color markings, multiple ownership of animals between breeders in member countries and yes, they even discussed genetic abnormalities. The climax of the 7th World Hereford Conference was the International Hereford Show staged on July 8 and 9th. The show attracted exhibitors from eight provinces and eleven states providing a show for a huge crowd representing at least twenty-five countries. The show arena was divided into Horned and Polled sections and shown simultaneously. There were 777 entries making the event the largest of its kind for a single breed ever held in the history of pedigreed stock. The Horned Hereford Show was evaluated by George Edgar, Little Red Deer Hereford Farms, Innisfail, Alberta with Joe Rogers, Penticton, British Columbia. The Polled Hereford section was judged by W.W. (Wib) Donaldson, Louada Farms, Peterborough, Ontario with Ron Pitchford, Pleasant Valley Farm, Melfort, Saskatchewan.

Medicine Hat is a small bustling city located in Southeastern Alberta. It inherited its name from the Blackfoot Indians, and the native word for the site of the city is “saamis” which means medicine man’s hat. The city has a resident population of 56,997 as of 2011, but it also serves as the hub for a large Southern Alberta population. “The Hat” as it’s known locally, boasts some of the largest natural gas reserves in the world, and it holds the proud distinction of being the sunniest city in Canada, with over 2,500 hours of sunshine each year. A popular attraction to the city, that is impossible to miss, is the “World’s Tallest Tepee”. The colorful steel structure was created for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics and was relocated to welcome visitors to Medicine Hat in 1991. Just east of Medicine Hat, approximately 35 kilometres on Highway 1 and in Cypress County, is the hamlet of Irvine. Irvine features a school (kindergarten through Grade 9), a hockey rink, a curling rink, a rodeo facility, a convenience store, a bar/hotel, and a post office. It’s a small community where everybody knows your name! Irvine, Alberta has been home to the Brost families for four generations. If you glance back at many of the surnames in the community history book, you will notice certain ethic similarities. The area was predominantly settled by GermanRussian immigrants from the province of Bessarabia near the Black Sea, and they have a unique and fascinating history. In
the early 1800s, Alexander I, Tsar of Russia, set his sites on colonizing undeveloped areas of his vast country. He enticed foreigners, especially Germans, with promises of a better life. They were given free land for farms, interest-free loans for ten years, and freedom from taxes. They were allowed to self-govern their villages, follow their own religion, and were exempt from serving in the Russian military. Most of the German settlements sprang up in Bessarabia. It wasn’t long before the virgin untilled land became rich farming and grazing country under the efforts of the German settlers. But, by 1871, Tsar Alexander III and his political followers decided that the Bessarabia immigrants were perhaps prospering too well. The Tsar introduced harsh new policies that ended independent self-government in the colonies and freedom from military service. He also decreed that Russian be the language of instruction in schools. The Brost family, like tens of thousands of other GermanRussians, fled Russia for North America. Some immigrants arrived in Canada and some arrived in the United States. Canada was attracting immigrants because The Dominion Lands Act of 1872 offered every immigrant a 160-acre homestead in the West for $10. If the improvement requirement was met, the property would become theirs in three years. When they arrived west, many were attracted by the bare rolling contour of the land and the beautiful Cypress Hills in Southeastern Alberta.
Herefords Today World Issue 2012 28
The area is suited to ranching and grain farming, with a long hot and frost free growing season. However, the area can also have a very hot and dry July that can be cruel to the grain crops. Some of the German-Russian immigrants stayed and some moved on. Adolph Brost was born in 1883 in Denvitz, Bessarabia and came to North America as a small child with his parents Michial and Caroline Brost. They settled in North Dakota, but as young men, Adolph and two of his brothers came to Canada. Adolph worked as a laborer, and for a few years operated a livery barn in Irvine, Alberta with one of his brothers. In 1908 he married his young 16 year old bride, Matilda, and they ran a boarding house business in Medicine Hat for a short time until they took up a homestead in the Gros Ventre area. They farmed their homestead for several years before they purchased a section of land on the North side of the German-Russian settlement of Irvine. Together, Adolph and Matilda raised 14 children, seven girls and seven boys. One of their sons, Alfred, born in 1916, left the farm during the “Dirty Thirties” to seek employment in Central Alberta. When Alfred returned to Irvine in 1939, he settled on land close to his parents, just 1 ½ miles north of Irvine. In 1943, Alfred married Annie Boschee, and together they raised a family of five children; three boys and two girls. Like his father, Alfred ran a mixed farm until he decided to step-up his operation by adding a Purebred herd bull. In 1960 Alfred and his oldest son, Harlow, travelled to Maple Creek, Saskatchewan with the intent of purchasing a Polled Hereford bull from Mike Klaibert. They did return home with a herd bull, Onword Domestic Mischief 7J, but they also returned with 20 Purebred females. In the years that followed, they expanded their genetic pool by purchasing bulls from Circle T Ranch, Chris Sutter and Tom Day. In the late sixties and the seventies, herd bulls were also added from Justamere Farms and Remitall Cattle Co. During this time, the Purebred cow herd grew as well. The Brosts attended dispersal sales, and acquired females from Carl Beck, Tom Day and Peter Reterath. The farm was named “Alfred Brost and Sons”, and their herd letters, ABSR, would soon become well recognized within the Hereford industry. Alfred Brost and Sons sold their bulls by private treaty and cultivated a loyal
commercial clientele by consigning to the Medicine Hat Bull Sale beginning in 1963. 1976 Medicine Hat Bull Sale Champion Bulls were also sold at Lethbridge, Calgary and Lacombe where they had Champions at all these sales. When Alfred passed away in 1976, his three sons, Harlow, Glenn and Merlen carried on with the family operation under the name of Brost Bros. Stock Farm, hence the prefix BBSF. They also changed the Hereford tattoo letters to GHMB to represent Glenn, Harlow, and Merlen Brost. By this time the Brosts were also hosting their own production sales. The three brothers worked hard together to serve the needs of their commercial clientele and compete in the Purebred Hereford industry while maximizing the genetics of both Horned and Polled Hereford cattle. Harlow and his wife, Ruby, had three children, Blaine, Lori and Blake. Tragically, they lost Blake in 1985 at the age of 11 in a vehicle accident. Glenn and Shirley Brost have three children, Leif, Terry and Cole, and Merlen and Barbara have three children as well, Shelley, Craig and Mark. When Harlow passed away in 1998, the two remaining brothers, Glenn and Merlen, formed a company with Harlow’s son, Blaine, under the name of Brost Land & Cattle Co. The partnership remains today. Blaine Brost briefly spoke to his future wife, Shannon Busse, at the Medicine Hat Stampede when they were introduced by mutual friends. Shannon came from Seven Persons, another small community about an hour’s drive from Irvine. The Seven Persons School didn’t have an Industrial Arts or Home Economics department, so their students bussed to Irvine once a week to take advantage of that school’s facilities. Shannon chose Home Economics, and it just happened that young Blaine’s locker was just outside the classroom door. Their second meeting took place when Blaine threw orange peels at 14 year old Shannon to get her attention. Shannon was on cloud nine because she couldn’t believe this dark, handsome cowboy in Grade 12 would pay attention to her! They met for a third time at a Baseball Tournament dance that summer and immediately started dating.

The youngest daughter of Lloyd and Marge Busse, Shannon was raised on a small mixed farm with her sister, Shelley. She grew up loving animals and the outdoors and was her father’s “son”! She learned how to drive the grain truck at ten years old, and her father paid her to help with the baling. “Dad used to pay me per bale to make small bales,” she recalls. “I would be out there baling straw in October with my winter coat on!” Shannon would check the cows before she went to school, and she could manage the irrigation by herself. “We also raised Border Collies and boarded horses,” she tells me, “and when I finally got a horse of my own at age 13, I was in seventh heaven.” Lloyd Busse was also a mechanic, and Shannon would be right there beside him when it came to tearing something apart to fix it. Shannon’s love of animals extends beyond the normal farm pets. The Fish and Wildlife officers used to bring pheasants to the Busse farm and release them along the creek. One day when Shannon was in Grade 6, she and her father went down to watch. The officers asked if they could also release a raccoon that had been causing havoc elsewhere. Shannon jumped at the opportunity to get a new pet. Roxy the raccoon and Shannon became close companions, and she would follow her around like a dog. However, Roxy had a devious streak! Whenever she could sneak into the house, she would open Marge Busse’s lazy-susan cupboard and throw everything out as fast as she could, and getting her out of the house wasn’t an easy task! Well, Roxy went missing one day, and when Shannon overheard a classmate telling the story of how his neighbor had shot a raccoon, she investigated. Sure enough the raccoon was hers. Roxy had gone to the neighboring farm and went on a rampage, killing 52 chickens. No more raccoon pets! Shannon was an Honor Roll student, taking Grades One through Nine in Seven Persons and Grades Ten through Twelve in Medicine Hat. In 1988, after High School Graduation, she enrolled at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in Calgary and studied Medical Laboratory Technology. The same summer she received her dipoloma, 1990, Shannon and Blaine Brost married and settled on the Brost farm. Shannon took her practicum at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital and continued working on a casual basis, for eight years. In 1992 she also accepted a full-time position at an environmental company doing chemical and soil testing. It was a long three years working: Shannon worked full-time in one position, and casual at the hospital, often putting in 20 hour days. Eventually, Shannon was hired full-time at the Medicine Hat hospital, and today she works the day shift with weekends off.

Living in the country, Shannon didn’t have the opportunity to play extra-curricular school sports, but in Grade Nine she took up Cross Country Running and entered the Medicine Hat College Rattler Run Marathon. She still runs five kilometres a day, Golfs, Curls and is a medal winning -Recreational Volleyball and Badminton player. The Busse family kept commercial cattle, but Shannon wasn’t a 4-H member and had never been exposed to the Purebred industry until she met Blaine. Her first exposure to showing cattle came when she and Blaine were dating. “I had never shown a thing in my life,” she recalls. “In 1986 Blaine hurt his knee playing baseball and needed an operation. He didn’t have anyone to show his 4-H steer. His sister had a steer of her own, so I was the next obvious choice! They handed me the steer and said, ‘He’s yours’. I managed to get through the show and believe it or not, had Grand Champion Steer! They were even going to give me the showmanship award until they realized I wasn’t a member of the club! Who knew it was so easy!” Shannon’s passion is her family and Brost Land & Cattle Co. There isn’t much she doesn’t help with on the farm. She cooks for the crew and bakes all the desserts for their sales, but she also heat checks, fixes fence, helps with the branding, sorts cattle, calves cows, seeds green feed, vaccinates, halter breaks, and helps prep show and sale cattle. She also does the bookkeeping and purebred paper work such as registrations and transfers as well as photographs the sale cattle, prepares the sale catalogues for press and does the mailing. Shannon and Blaine keep the purebred cattle close to their yard during calving season, and Shannon does the 5:00 a.m. check before work. When the weather is cold, Shannon and Blaine rotate the night checks. “She does whatever I’m not home to do,” Blaine chuckles. “She doesn’t AI or clip cattle, but I’m hoping she’ll take over the tattooing soon!” Shannon has had to give up growing a vegetable garden in favour of taking care of her grass, trees and flowers in the summer. Blaine and Shannon have two daughters, Nicona born in 1995 and Erica born in 2000, and both girls are showing the same dedication to farming and the Hereford industry as their parents. The girls are members of the Irvine 4-H Club as well as the Alberta Junior Hereford Association and the Canadian Junior Hereford Association.

Nicona is a 16 year old organized and determined young woman with a “let’s get it done” attitude. She has a way with animals, and her passion is showing cattle; something she has done since she was four years old. Her accomplishments in 4-H and the Junior Hereford program are already lengthy. The first year in 4-H her steer placed third in class, but for the last seven years running she has exhibited either the Grand or Reserve Grand Champion Steer. Both in 2009 and 2010 her straight bred Hereford steer was named the overall District Grand Champion winner! Her females have also placed well in 4-H. For six years running she has exhibited the Supreme Champion Purebred Female. A few of her favourite honors as a Junior Hereford member have been when she was 2009 Medicinie Hat Champion Steer named the Grand Aggregate winner at the 2008 Bonanza held in Medicine Hat, and was the youngest member to win the Team Judging Competition. Again in 2009, at the age of 13, Nicona was named the Grand Aggregate winner at Bonanza held in Princeton, B.C., taking home a scholarship for $1,500. She also won overall Showmanship honors, the Premier Breeder Award, and her cow, BBSF 035J Unique 29T (AKA Tinkerbell) was named the Supreme Bred and Owned animal. Nicona had a little star power at Canadian Western Agribition last fall. She was asked to co-star with Rick Mercer on the television program The Rick Mercer Report. Nicona gave Mr. Mercer a lesson on how to properly wash a bull! Nicona is an Honor Roll student and also an athlete. Like her mother, she is a runner. She runs five kilometres three times a week, and at the same age as her mother she ran the Medicine Hat Rattler Run Marathon. Nicona plays Softball in the summer and Ringette in winter. She also referees Ringette in the winter and is a past Junior Power Skating coach. Taking after her father, she Team Ropes with her sister Erica. Nicona is the header and
Erica is the heeler, and they have competed in local rodeos such as Irvine, Jenner and Maple Creek. Erica is also an Honor Roll student and is in her third year as an Irvine 4-H member. She is just starting her list of Junior Hereford accomplishments. In 2011 she had the Reserve Champion Commercial Female as well as the Reserve Champion Female in the Purebred Open Show at Bonanza with her entry BBSF 040035 Cindy 21W and her heifer calf at side BBSF 303T Cindy 88Y. Erica has also taken up running with her mother and sister, plays Baseball in the summer and Ringette in the winter. This past winter, Erica was also a Junior Power Skating coach. The Brost family are all excellent horsemen. Blaine is a member of the Senior Pro Rodeo Association as a Team Roper. He and his partner, Dave Long qualified for the finals held in Claresholm in 2011. You would think that having three runners in the family has to be an asset at times. I’m sure it has saved saddling a horse a time or two just to chase a cow in! Since most of the work at Brost Land & Cattle Co. is done on horseback, on an average they keep about five to nine well trained horses on the farm. When Nicona was five years old, they were able to purchase the perfect horse for a child. “The horse taught her to ride,” Shannon tells me. “Cindy would only walk until she knew Nicona was ready to go faster. Then she would only trot until she knew Nicona was ready to gallop. We were lucky enough to keep Cindy to teach Erica to ride as well.” Pictures

It’s easy to see that Blaine Brost appreciates his family and their dedication to the family business. Today, Brost Land & Cattle Co. run approximately 200 Purebred Horned and Polled Herefords and about 200 mostly straight bred Hereford commercial females on 11,000 acres of dryland including some green feed and 1,000 acres of hay. “Our major focus is on our commercial ranch market,” Blaine explains. “However, we show purebreds to keep our name out there and keep abreast of the industry. We still feel that both the Horned and Polled genetics have something important to offer. It’s always nice to win Championship banners, but we are probably most renowned for our ability to sell good commercial bulls. In this area of the province, bulls have to be able to travel long distances and be sound on their feet.” For the past six years, the Brosts have been hosting their sales on the farm. They host a production sale each third Tuesday in November, and 2012 will mark the 44th annual event. Starting with Alfred Brost & Sons in 1963, they have been consigning bulls to the Medicine Hat Bull Sale for 49 years; making them the longest running consignors. For several years running, the Brosts have achieved Grand or Reserve Grand Champion honors with their bulls at the sale. Also, in 2011 the Brost Land & Cattle Co. fall production sale was one of the top sales in Canada. This spring, March 2012 at the Medicine Hat Bull Show, they had the Grand Champion Bull, Best Pair of Bulls, and the Best Pen of Three Bulls, as well as being nominated by their peers as having the Best String of Bulls. “We are proud of our accomplishments, and we are always re-evaluating what we do,” Blaine explains. “We can’t always sell the best and keep our cow herd up. It is two-fold,” he continues. “We once tried to diversify by adding 20 Black Angus cows to the herd, but they only lasted here for about four years. With two young daughters helping with the cattle, we still prefer Hereford. Our hearts just weren’t into Angus. Our hearts are in the Hereford cattle!” Some of the Brost family’s most memorable accomplishments in the purebred industry go back 20 years, to when they won the Junior Champion Bull Banner at the National Western Denver Stock Show with Advantage 441L. Today, the Brosts exhibit at the Junior Hereford Shows in the summer, at Canadian Western Agribition in the fall, and the National Western Denver Stock Show in Coalition in Denver January. Another of their favourite show highlights was when they purchased GHC Taboo Coalition 52U from Crittenden Bros. Polled Herefords sale. The bull showed at the Denver Stock Show and was named Senior Champion in 2011. Shannon can’t travel to many sales because of her work at the Medicine Hat Hospital, but she reads the catalogues and knows what she likes. “I hate to brag,” she laughs. “Blaine asked me to look through the catalogue to see if there were any bulls that caught my eye. I brought his attention to Coalition, and he bought him!”
One more highlight for the Brosts, especially Nicona, was when her Junior Semen Donation bull, BBSF 101N Wrangler 29W sold in their production sale to Crittenden Bros. Polled Herefords and Holmes Farm. Wrangler stood second in class to the Champion Bull at the Denver Stock Show in 2011.
2010 Medicinie Hat Champion Steer
In 2010, Brost Land & Cattle Co. was named the Alberta Purebred Breeders of the Year! Shannon Brost is a busy young mother, but still finds time to volunteer in her Community and for the betterment of the BBSF 101N Wrangeler 29W Hereford breed. She was the Bull bred by Nicona through CJHA semen Secretary Treasurer of the donation program. Selling to Crittenden Bros. 2nd in class to Denver Champion Bull Medicine Hat Bull Sale for 12 years. 4-H is very dear to Shannon’s heart, and she is presently the Leader of the Irvine 4-H Club and the Treasurer of the Medicine Hat 4-H Beef Council. She is also presently the Chairman of the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede Pen Show as well as a Director on the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede Board. Shannon is also a Past Director of the Irvine Curling Club, and a Past President & Treasurer of the Irvine Skating Club. She is a Past Adult Advisor for the Alberta Junior Hereford Association, and both Shannon and Blaine were on the Planning Committee for the Junior Hereford Bonanza held in Medicine Hat in 2008. Presently, they are donating their time as Co-Chairs of the Show Committee for the upcoming World Hereford Conference to be held in Olds, Alberta this July. The Brost couple evaluate cattle in a similar way, which makes them perfect judging partners. In 2004 they travelled to the Sydney Show in Australia, and Blaine returned as a Canadian Hereford Association Delegate in 2006. As a couple, they were invited back to judge the Dubbo Bull Sale in Australia in 2008. They have also evaluated cattle at Edmonton Farmfair and the Calgary Bull Sale in 2007. They are also a popular judging team for 4-H shows throughout Southern Alberta and into British Columbia. “So far we can’t think of anything we would do differently,” Shannon and Blaine agree. “We get our gratification when our cattle do well at shows and sales and especially when they do well for our clients. We keep our drive to do better because of the interest Nicona and Erica have shown in the purebred cattle, and it’s important to get the young people involved in the business. When we watch the girls working together at the shows, it’s awesome!” The Brosts are a family dedicated to the Hereford industry and most importantly, they are a family that takes pride in working together!

12 20 , 0 OLDS, ALBERTA, MAY 10, 2012 Y1 A M The Government of Canada announced on N A the support of 35 community colleges that AM K will partner with businesses to conduct by research projects in the areas of information and communications technologies, environmental technologies, natural resources and energy. The Honorable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for Science and Technology made the announcement while addressing the Polytechnics Canada Annual Conference on May 8, 2012.
“Collaboration between government, applied researchers and the private sector is vital to building an innovative economy,” said Minister Goodyear. “The College and Community Innovation Program supports research collaborations between companies and colleges. It illustrates the importance our government places on creating the conditions for innovation and entrepreneurship to thrive in this country.” Olds College, University of Alberta and their industry partners’ proposal submitted to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada (NSERC) under the new College-University Idea to Innovation program for a three year, $945,000 project entitled “Use of Genomic Tools to Improve Feed Efficiency in Purebred Hereford Cattle” was approved. This will mark the start of a new, and in some cases renewed, collaboration between Olds College, University of Alberta, Livestock Gentec, ARD, Canadian Hereford Association and the Integrated Beef Research Station (Cattleland). The project will allow the livestock industry to reap the benefits of the scientific research involving residual feed intake (RFI). It will characterize RFI in purebred Hereford bulls, produce a RFI expected progeny difference (EPD) using both phenotypic and molecular information, and use genotypes to assist in the validation of an existing RFI single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) panel produced by Livestock Gentec. This project will provide the means of identifying more efficient sires and improve the profit margin and competitiveness for many Canadian beef cattle producers. “These investments provide Olds School of Agriculture, Olds College Farm and our students with access to the people, resources and tools they need to be at the forefront of innovation and entrepreneurship,” says Tanya McDonald, Dean, Olds College School of Agriculture. “Our students will benefit through active participation in the data collection and from the opportunity to develop lasting relationships with the University of Alberta and our industry partners,” she adds. “The ultimate goal is create sustainable partnerships that will sharpen our innovative edge and have a positive impact on our country and industry.” CONTACT: Donna Woldanski | Corporate Communications Manager | Office of Advancement | (403) 559-4574 DWoldanski@oldscollege.ca Tanya McDonald | Dean, Olds College School of Agriculture | (403) 556-8347 | TMcdonald@oldscollege.ca Herefords Today World Issue 2012 36

By Chris Poley The real world beef industry has been an extremely “bullish” environment to be in. Starting off with a strong fall calf run, which saw feedlots and order buyers being very aggressive on news of short supply and climbing futures, producing higher packer bids. This continued on into the new year with feeder cattle even higher and grass calves costing well over a thousand dollars. This lead to huge optimism among the cow/calf producers, pushing bred cows in excess of two thousand dollars. It also fueled a record year for bull sales, with quality rancher bulls bringing in excess of five thousand dollars on a regular basis. The markets in the last few weeks have softened, not to a level of alarm, however the packers have pushed the fat cattle lower, sighting sluggish consumer demand as the reason. The discovery of a dairy cow with BSE in California also gave them cause to lower fat cattle; even though, the resulting push back from consumers and importers did not happen; in fact the very next week US exports were still up a healthy margin over the same week the previous year. All things still remain positive in the beef industry; we are just coming up to peak demand time for beef. The summer Bar-B-Q season is just around the corner, which domestically in North America, we still prefer our steaks and burgers over all others, hands down. Exports continue to be strong and we have regained several markets in the last year and the work to open more is ongoing. Well I can certainly appreciate that all parties involved need to make money, and lower numbers available in the market place, does bode best for the cow/calf producer. While he enjoys strong competition for his calves, the feed lots and packers cost of operation go up because they have to pay more and are struggling with utilization rates. However, the old saying “every dog has its day” also comes to mind. The packers have more control than any other player and seem to be quite good at managing their risk. We all still remember quite well how
they basically stole some classes of cattle after the discovery of BSE and made some very large profits that will help them ride out this period of low plant utilization. The feedlot industry is always one of tight margins with the odd home run. Through the years closely following the discovery of BSE in Canada, the feedlots gathered up the majority of government aid available to cover their loses. Also through that time there were some turns of cattle that were extremely profitable, being purchased at very depressed prices and sold into a volatile fat market at the right time. The cow/calf producer is just getting his or her “day in the sun,” having the least control in the whole system; this side of the industry lost the most players through the last eight years. The ones that remain, many of them had depleted their equity down to where surviving much longer looked faint, and retirement equity had been eaten up. The return to profitability for the cow/calf producer was long overdue because without them the feedlots and packers do not exist either. Each member of the industry needs the other and the more that is realized the better; more work as a community would benefit everyone. As much as big corporations like to think they can do anything bigger and better than individuals, it has been proven time and time again that beef calves cannot be mass produced the same way our meat counter competitors can be. We will never be able to take the environmental changes out of beef production because they cannot be managed from a corporate office on Monday morning. In the long run this fact will be to our benefit in a huge way, as the consumers look more and more for wholesome naturally produced protein sources.

Prevention and Control of Ringworm
Spring and Summer may be the time to Implement Your Strategy Doesn’t it just make you feel sick when your show animal or sale bull is covered with ringworm patches right at the worst possible time? Ringworm is a skin condition that gets almost no attention in North America probably because it is not considered to be economically important – no production losses, no mortality. However, I beg to differ! I think that this disease does affect the bottom line; especially, for the seedstock producer. Any blemish on an animal, no matter how minor it may be, probably has a negative effect on price. Simply put, if a product doesn’t look good your market is limited. Just ask the person responsible for the fruit and vegetable section at your grocery store! Ringworm can also be a legitimate cause of financial hardship: hide damage may be evident up to 15 months after the skin lesions have healed; and animals with obvious disease may not be eligible for export. This means your shipment of cattle gets rejected at the border and sent back home. Ringworm is common throughout the world appearing in dogs, cats, horses, sheep, cattle and several other species of animals. In all animals ringworm is caused by a fungus; there is no worm involved at all – the name is misleading. It is important to realize that the type of fungus tends to vary with the species of animal. For example, in cattle and horses ringworm is caused by Trichophyton verrucosum, whereas in dogs Microsporum spp. are the most likely culprit. One of my biggest concerns with ringworm is that it has zoonotic potential. In other words, people can get it! Young children, the elderly and city folk would be more likely to contract the disease than farm people. These are exactly the same folks that are more susceptible to E.coli O157, or tainted hamburger illness. The ringworm-causing fungus infects the skin and hair follicles. Most cases in cattle occur during the winter and early spring, the traditional bull sale season, with the typical clinical picture being one of small to large circular patches on the body, limbs and occasionally the face. Face and head lesions are more prevalent in young stock; in fact, I have seen a couple of very severe cases where most of the hair was gone. The skin might actually be raised in the area of hair loss and grey to white flakes or scales of skin are common. Ringworm patches are considered to be only mildly itchy, but will bleed easily if irritated. Dark, cool, rainy conditions seem to favour the occurrence of ringworm as does the keeping of cattle in close confinement. There are a number of treatments for ringworm. Motor oil and toothpaste really are not that effective. If there is any benefit it may be that these products simply limit the availability of oxygen and with diligent application the fungus can be smothered. Griseofulvin-containing treatments should not be used in food animals. Diluted bleach and farm fungicides may have a place, but the possibility of environmental contamination and meat residues might need to be considered as societal interests push our industry to be more responsible. Imaverol®, containing enilconazole as the active ingredient,
is arguably the most effective chemical treatment for cattle; however, animals must be washed every 3 to 4 days for a total of 4 applications making it impractical on most farms. Even after the fungus has been killed hair regrowth can take several weeks. Warm spring sunlight is my personal favorite as it is effective and treatment is easy to administer. When combined with natural hair shedding the patches of hair loss seem to disappear quickly. Sunlight may also prevent clinical disease as I can’t remember ever seeing a case of ringworm in a pastured animal during the summer. Prevention is the best way to deal with ringworm in my opinion. If you have had ringworm on your farm you must realize that fungal spores can last for several months if not years on your equipment and penning material. Wood is especially good for helping to keep the disease around for some time. Buildings and equipment can be disinfected with diluted bleach or phenolic compounds, but practicality may be a problem. Many producers experiencing an outbreak have told me that they had not seen ringworm in their herd for years until the recent purchase of new stock. Quarantining new arrivals for a minimum of 2 weeks might be a consideration; longer if they have an active case. Vitamins A, E and selenium have also been reported to be beneficial for assisting with recovery and adequate levels in the diet may prevent disease or limit the severity. I have never had obvious ringworm on my own body, despite being exposed to it countless times and the majority of infections I have seen amongst those handling cattle are in children rather than the experienced stockpersons. Practical experience suggested that herds that have had an outbreak of the disease were protected from reoccurrence for some time with most clinically affected animals being protected for the rest of their lives. In 1979, a vaccine for the prevention of ringworm in cattle was introduced in Norway which helped to reduce the number of infected herds in the Gausdal region from 70% to 0% over an 8-year period. There is no vaccine available in Canada or the US, but there are ways to provide immune protection for your herd. Exposure of new arrivals with ringworm patches to the rest of the herd including young calves may be effective, but you must be careful as ringworm may not be the worst disease that comes of this practice. If mixing does occur, ringworm will spread rapidly through a naïve herd and only calves born after the event will be susceptible to the disease. One thing we have tried after having experienced ringworm in our yearling bull pen over a couple of winters was to open that pen up during the summer once the manure had been cleared out allowing nursing pairs to go in and rest. As is typical, the cattle would rub on the wooden shelter fence and rails. I believe that the calves were exposed to the fungus and probably broke the cycle without having full-blown disease. This trick won’t be as effective as the number of viable spores in the wood decline over time so being careful with new introductions and contaminated brushes etc. will continue to be important.
