You ought to know…this is the final word or what I call…the obituary of Herefords Today…

February 2003 – October 2017, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Herefords Today was founded to increase the image of the Hereford Breed and its membership. The reason was simple ... the national breed magazine began reducing production costs by printing on substandard paper, I called it tissue paper, a full color process that was a waste of ink. From day one, the directors of the association, management and staff felt infringed by the development of this magazine. Further to the fact, Herefords Today was considered a “Polled” publication ... something that I still chuckle about today. For what it’s worth, the Canadian Hereford Association still has a question on their membership application requesting whether or not you are Horned or Polled ... the only beef bred in Canada ... as the rest of the world wants homozygous polled.

Three months after the first issue of Herefords Today was published, on May 20th BSE hit the livestock industry; your $1500.00 cow was now worth $100.00. A blow which still shows its wounds, as each breed lost membership...lots of membership. But HT’s parent company took the events of that day in stride and together tried to assist each breeder who was a patron in marketing their product…something that has not changed over the past fourteen years. It is quite ironic that many of those decision makers (for the breed) …directors, managers and presidents are not involved in the business today.

But the foundation of Herefords Today was a leader in livestock publication innovation. Our motto has been “often copied, never duplicated” … something which lives to this very day. It was through the production of Herefords Today, that Today’s Publishing was established… North America’s leading purebred livestock promotion company. Today’s Angus Advantage was founded after several prominent Angus breeders requested development of a new publication. Today, Today’s Publishing, publishes six national purebred magazines which are circulated around the globe. So, although the efforts of Herefords Today staff and its parent company will seem to go unnoticed, others breeds will benefit today and in the future.

To say it was a profitable venture would be a miss-truth since it takes advertising to substantiate the cost of postage, ink and paper, but as membership slowly waned each year, so did advertising.

The new generation of breeders look to the electronic world where news is instantaneous.

Personally, I believe that we are losing the art of conversation as ages from six to sixty-six text each other or peruse Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc. featuring human activity, recipes, babies, birthdays and even livestock. But… I am an old fart from the old school and life moves on…. I have a flip phone and still don’t like to text! But advertising is mandatory in marketing… we must sell appeal and sizzle… look at the millions of dollars that are spent on advertising to maintain or gain market share by the two major hamburger chains, McDonalds and A&W…. and we are the beneficiaries because we supply the raw product.

This editorial cannot end without both apology and thanks…. firstly, an apology to the many foreign subscribers and our domestic commercial producers who liked what they saw. Thanks to our contract advertisers because you kept our Hereford cause afloat.

The staff of the parent company will continue to assist with your marketing, as they are the only people going up and down the road promoting the breed. A special thank you to Bryan Kostiuk and his staff for late nights and weekends in meeting deadlines. I know you will charge ahead, making Today’s Publishing even bigger and stronger.

As I sit down to write this is , it’s a cool rainy day in October... I’m definitely not complaining! After the hot dry summer we have had, it’s great to see it rain, to areas south and west of me it is snowing like crazy. Again I would say nobody is likely complaining, moisture of any kind is welcome. Overall most of western Canada had a better crop than expected, not a bumper crop, but still average in many areas.

We need whatever rain, snow or what ever else wet can fall from the sky before next spring to replenish moisture levels. Having said that, the last couple weeks looks like it has remembered how to rain again and we will go into winter in decent shape.

The fall calf run has begun and so far it has been very active, even as numbers on offer continue to rise the prices being paid are significantly higher than a year ago. In many classes prices are 30 to 40 cents per pound higher, which is a huge increase. I was receiving reports a month ago from people selling light calves and getting $150.00 per head more than last year. I had a client call me last week in a very good mood, they had just sold their steers that day. They weighed 718 pounds and sold for $2.14 per pound, last year the same week at basically the same weight, they sold for $1.71 per pound. A $308.74 increase year over year, that’s huge!

In 1945 there were 7 cows for every 10 Canadians, in 2017 that number is 3 cows for every 10 Canadians.

Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan was settled by the Doukhobors.

Persecuted in their home country of Russia, many Doukhobors immigrated to Canada in 1899 and settled in Saskatchewan. At the time, it was the largest mass migration in history. They settled in the Petrofka rural area along the North Saskatchewan river (south of the current town of Blaine Lake) in August 1899 and began preparations to survive the winter by digging dugouts for homes, into the hillsides and along the river banks.

Of Ukrainian / Doukhobor ancestry, Ted Serhienko, commonly known as T Bar, was born July 11, 1948 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Bill and Dora Serhienko.

The middle child of their three boys, he grew up on a small mixed farm that by his accounts would be described as humble. He enjoyed school, especially English and History and remains an avid history buff to this day.

T Bar graduated high school in 1966 and attended the University of Saskatchewan College of Agriculture.

This issue marks the end of Herefords Today, but I do not want anyone to think for a second that this decision will have any effect on T Bar C’s commitment to the Hereford breed, our loyal customers and our juniors. In fact, your best interest is one of the things we had in mind when making this decision, I write more sale budgets than anyone else in the industry and understand the many options and costs associated with it.We do not want our customers to feel like they need to choose between their loyalty to us or their association or spend money on duplication. His first job was a riding cowboy for Cormie Ranch. After parting ways, he went on to work for legendary breeders such as: Louis Latimer, Remitall Cattle Co., Olds, Alberta; Joe Lewis, Alfalfa Lawn Farms, Larned, Kansas and Bob Gordon, Kinnaber Stock Farm, Souris, MB. All were instrumental in furthering his cattle handling expertise.

In the late sixties T Bar was one of the pioneer cattle fitters and one of the first to use adhesives, He states, “In those days they tried all types of ways and products to get the animals looking their best.” The custom fitting business steadily grew and continued for about ten years doing shows like the newly formed Canadian Western Agribition, which started in 1971. As his fitting business excelled, it enabled him to hire young people at the start of their cattle career, many of which have gone on to be extremely successful in their own right, as well as remaining lifelong friends.

Many members have hit the classroom and everyone is excited for what the next few months have to offer!

Fall has kicked off and I couldn’t be more excited for the next few months!

Before heading back to school, I represented the CJHA in the United Kingdom for 10 days on a trip of a lifetime. While in England, I spent my days touring various herds, attending cattle shows, and touring the beautiful countryside.

Some of my main stops included the “Hereford House”, which is also known as the Hereford Cattle Society Office, herd visits including The Fabb Herd, Haven Herefords, Classic Polled Herefords, and Wiltshire College, and attended the National Polled Show.

Attending the National Polled Show was a remarkable experience. To meet all the breeders from across the UK, as well as seeing top quality cattle from all the countries was an experience I will never forget.

Everyone in the UK was so welcoming, and very interested in the Canadian Junior Hereford program, myself and my herd back home. Being able to connect and share my story was incredible. While at the Polled Show, I participated in their Young Handlers competitions. The Friday night Young Handlers Competition was similar to our Showmanship. I was honoured to be Champion Senior and Reserve Overall Young Handler. On Saturday during the open show, they also do a Young Handlers Competition where you wear a letter, and a judge watches

you throughout the day to see how involved you are, your showing skills, as well as how interactive you are. I was fortunate enough to be Reserve Senior Champion Young Handler. When comparing our showing style to the British showing style, they are quite different! It was so interesting to learn a new style and see how they present their cattle compared to the Canadian way.

I would like to thank the CJHA for giving me the opportunity to travel to the UK. I would also like to thank everyone in the United Kingdom that welcomed me into their homes, and took the opportunity to visit with myself and learn more about the Canadian Junior Hereford Association. I would also like to extend a huge thank you Emma Smith and her family for taking me in for ten days and allowing me to expand my knowledge and learn more about UK Herefords. This was a trip I will never forget!

The cool weather and kids back to school only means one thing, its fall show and sale season! There are many sales happening and many fall shows about to get underway. If you are looking to increase your herd, there are many females on offer this fall that will be perfect for any junior!

This issue will be the first and last that I include an editor’s note. This past year marks the fifteenth anniversary of Herefords Today magazine. It was launched in January of 2003 as a means to increase the quality and standards of advertising in the breed. I am extremely proud of the way Herefords Today has evolved over the years and have enjoyed bringing each issue and working with our advertisers, many whom I consider great friends.

Press Release Canadian Hereford Association inductees Bob and Joyce Gordon in Memorial Scroll.

August 23, 2017 On July 21, 2017 at the Canadian Hereford Association (CHA) annual meeting in Abbotsford, BC, Bob and Joyce Gordon, Kinnaber Cattle Co., previously of Souris, MB were inducted into the Canadian Hereford Association Memorial Scroll.

The CHA Memorial Scroll recognized the Gordons as breeders of distinction in advancement of the breed and as leaders who contributed to the Hereford industry. Bob and Joyce Gordon were dedicated to the Hereford breed, their family, community and in many phases of agricultural production.

After travelling extensively showing and selling cattle, Bob began to focus on developing a Polled Hereford herd for his family in the late 70’s, allowing him the opportunity to pass on his knowledge and legacy of cattle to his family.

From his travels across the US, he had seen the development of youth cattle programs and thus, while serving as a CHA board member, he proposed the formation of the Canadian Junior Hereford program.

On August 12, 1979, Kinnaber Cattle Co. hosted a field day that was pivotal in the creation of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association (CJHA). His children are indebted for his development of the CJHA as the program allowed them to be actively involved in a youth organization where they learned about leadership, gained knowledge about Herefords and citizenship, all while creating many life-long friendships. The CJHA has molded many young cattlemen across Canada. Today the CJHA still hosts one of the largest junior events, called Bonanza, across the Canadian provinces.

Kinnaber Cattle Co. bred several champion bulls and females and top-quality breeding stock. The family showed their Polled Herefords at many summer and fall shows across the prairie provinces, Ontario, and in the United States.

Bob and Joyce Gordon were active in the Hereford breed until 1983, when they dispersed their successful breeding program. The Gordons joined Western Breeders/Alta Genetics to select top beef breeding bulls of all breeders, including Herefords, for the Canada and US cattle industry.

Bob passed away July 2016 but his contributions along with Joyce’s efforts, will be fondly remembered by all Hereford breeders. As inductees in the CHA Memorial Scroll, their photo will hang at the CHA headquarters in Calgary, AB. As I sit down to write this is, it’s a cool rainy day in October... I’m definitely not complaining! After the hot dry summer we have had, it’s great to see it rain, to areas south and west of me it is snowing like crazy. Again I would say nobody is likely complaining, moisture of any kind is welcome. Overall most of western Canada had a better crop than expected, not a bumper crop, but still average in many areas.

We need whatever rain, snow or what ever else wet can fall from the sky before next spring to replenish moisture levels. Having said that, the last couple weeks looks like it has remembered how to rain again and we will go into winter in decent shape.

The fall calf run has begun and so far it has been very active, even as numbers on offer continue to rise the prices being paid are significantly higher than a year ago. In many classes prices are 30 to 40 cents per pound higher, which is a huge increase. I was receiving reports a month ago from people selling light calves and getting $150.00 per head more than last year. I had a client call me last week in a very good mood, they had just sold their steers that day. They weighed 718 pounds and sold for $2.14 per pound, last year the same week at basically the same weight, they sold for $1.71 per pound. A $308.74 increase year over year, that’s huge!

maybe more important (to consumers and export customers) a safe, sustainably raised product.

Those of you who have hung onto the cows tail, will continue to be rewarded for your efforts. Do you know that there are over a third less of you than in 2005 and that our cow numbers are at a 26 year low, predicted to be at a 27 year low next year. You will continue to be paid a sustainable price for your production, with less supply and more mouths to feed.

In 1945 there were 7 cows for every 10 Canadians, in 2017 that number is 3 cows for every 10 Canadians.

That is here at home and the rest of the world is following the same trend. “Momma it’s ok to let your babies grow up to be cowboys!”

This issue marks the end of Herefords Today, but I do not want anyone to think for a second that this decision will have any effect on T Bar C’s commitment to the Hereford breed, our loyal customers and our juniors. In fact, your best interest is one of the things we had in mind when making this decision; I write more sale budgets than anyone else in the industry and understand the many options and costs associated with it. We do not want our customers to feel like they need to choose between their loyalty to us or their association or spend money on duplication. As we always have, we will continue to create quality It is no wonder the attitude among beef producers ads for our customers which will stand superior in is so good, even those with drought stress are still whatever publication they choose to run them. We positive about the cow business, and with good will continue to have the same number of quality staff reason. The Canadian beef industry is in good shape, in our office to produce all your advertising, catalogue, we continue to produce a high quality and even website and any other promotional items you need.

ur final Herefords Today feature will begin with local history, a format that our subject used often in the many articles he wrote over the years… so I’ll continue with the same tradition.

Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan was settled by the Doukhobors.

Persecuted in their home country of Russia, many Doukhobors immigrated to Canada in 1899 and settled in Saskatchewan. At the time, it was the largest mass migration in history. They settled in the Petrofka rural area along the North Saskatchewan river (south of the current town of Blaine Lake) in August 1899 and began preparations to survive the winter by digging dugouts for homes, into the hillsides and along the river banks.

Of Ukrainian / Doukhobor ancestry, Ted Serhienko, commonly known as T Bar, was born July 11, 1948 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Bill and Dora Serhienko.

The middle child of their three boys, he grew up on a small mixed farm that by his accounts would be described as humble. He enjoyed school, especially English and History and remains an avid history buff to this day.

T Bar graduated high school in 1966 and attended the University of Saskatchewan College of Agriculture.

His first job was a riding cowboy for Cormie Ranch. After parting ways, he went on to work for legendary breeders such as: Louis Latimer, Remitall Cattle Co., Olds, Alberta; Joe Lewis, Alfalfa Lawn Farms, Larned, Kansas and Bob Gordon, Kinnaber Stock Farm, Souris, MB. All were instrumental in furthering his cattle handling expertise.

In the late sixties T Bar was one of the pioneer cattle fitters and one of the first to use adhesives, He states, “In those days they tried all types of ways and products to get the animals looking their best.” The custom fitting business steadily grew and continued for about ten years doing shows like the newly formed Canadian Western Agribition, which started in 1971. As his fitting business excelled, it enabled him to hire young people at the start of their cattle career, many of which have gone on to be extremely successful in their own right, as well as remaining lifelong friends.

met ted in July of 1967 at the Saskatoon exhibition. Saskatoon was still on the a Circuit then and there would have been 500 head of cattle housed in four big wooden barns. it was a big show. i was 12 years old and was looking forward to having grand Champion Hereford Female because that was what my older brother had told me was going to happen. Colin thatcher was the judge and a large crowd was in attendance. imagine how surprised i was when upstart newcomers, Chic and Maureen Csigi from Circle g polled Herefords won the championship! that was a surprise but what really stuck with me was the young man that fitted and showed the Circle g cattle. He wore a big white hat, talked loud and laughed louder. after the show he passed around a bottle in a brown bag and was very much the centre of attention. i asked my father who that man was. He said, “that is Jim postnikoff’s hired man and he’s a custom fitter.” i had never heard of such a thing. it was at this time that ted went to work for Joe and Walter Lewis of alfalfa Lawn Farms in Larned, Kansas. a.L.F. was the ultimate cattle showing organization of its time. it was big news that this young man from Blaine Lake managed to get there and return. ted was now considered to have knowledge of showing cattle that was different from most Canadians. in 1971 at the first CWa another upstart newcomer, Roy Wudrick, claimed a major championship in the Hereford show. i was not at the first agribition but father phoned home a report every night. We were surprised our neighbour Roy did so well at such a large show, but dad finished the report by saying, “Well he had that young Jockey get them ready and it really made a difference.” ted was the first “Jockey” in our industry.

Many of the readers of this story were not around during the first decade of CWa. You need to understand that CWa was a game changer. We went from showing at home town fairs in front of a few neighbours and family to an event that drew thousands of people from around the world. the exotic explosion was happening at the same time. everything was getting bigger and happening faster. ted was the guy that built the bridge between the crew in the barn and the executives in the front office. ted’s charisma and attitude made it cool to be a cattle fitter and in the early CWa days a lot of people got that message because of ted.

By 1973 i was working for ted. We showed a big string of cattle across Western Canada for a number of breeders. Roger davis, Ward Muirhead and myself were the workers and ted was the front man. We lived and looked a bit like homeless people at that time. ted explained that the key to survival was a balanced diet of cheeseburgers, Hudson Bay Jamaica rum and bananas. Fortunately we all survived and Roger went on to be a internationally respected Veterinarian and Ward developed one of Canada’s top Simmental programs. as for me, i was never a salaried employee of any man again. in 1981 ted, Marjorie and i started the 5+ polled Hereford Sale. the concept was that we would select all the cattle and they all had to be at least a frame score 5. Many of the leading breeders at that time said it couldn’t be done. We gathered 60 lots and averaged an amazing $5,000.00. the first 10 heifer calves in the ring averaged over $10,000.00. ted is now a nationally recognized sale manager. ted has played a major role in a lot of our lives. He has been an innovator in our industry, a tireless promoter of purebred cattle and true friend to many, many people. i want to close by saying that it wouldn’t have been the same without ted’s little dutch girl, Mina. it was their partnership that really made the t Bar name a Legacy.

In the early seventies with the success of his custom fitting business, he started a purebred Hereford herd under the name T Bar C Cattle Co. Ltd. Having showed and sold many champions while fitting, he does talk fondly of topping some bull sales and his successes. In 1973 at Canadian Western Agribition, his heifer calf sold for $4,300.00 at a time when heifers were trading for $300 and up. An item most readers (who have met T Bar) would find hard to believe, is that he was once a government employee… hired by the government to hold fitting clinics around the province of Saskatchewan.

T Bar has judged hundreds of breed shows throughout North America, from the smallest 4-H Achievement Day to the RBC Beef Supreme Challenge and the First Lady Classic at Canadian Western Agribition.

He turned a gravelly voice into a marketing superstar - no one made more money for Canadian Hereford breeders than ted “Serhienko”, he was truly a marketing genius. - Duncan Porteous Interesting to note, that while they worked by day in jeans and cowboy boots, they also wore tuxedos and gowns on various evenings, for over ten years, as they were the franchisees for Totally Tropical Interiors, Saskatchewan, a silk floral company, which was marketed through home parties by sale consultants.

In the late eighties T Bar started publishing the “Bulls of the Breed,” an annual semen directory that quickly became a must read for the hottest Hereford genetics from around the world.

In the late seventies and early eighties, T Bar began managing sales and after the dispersal of his herd, focused full time on his new venture. During that time, he met Mina who was born in Holland, and later immigrated to Canada.

She was raised on a dairy farm outside of Balzac, Alberta.

Together,they have four children and twelve grandchildren.

In 1999, T Bar became an early adopter of technology and the internet, (even though he still claims he doesn’t know anything about technology), with the start of BuyAgro.com which has grown into one of the most influential websites in the livestock industry. It was always planned to be an all breeds website that featured breeder websites, as well as a source for online catalogues.

For over four decades Ted (and Mina) grew T Bar C Cattle Co. Ltd. from a single sale, to having managed in the ball park of 1000 successful production sales, bull sales and dispersals in many various breeds of cattle throughout Canada. During that time he became a seasoned ringman, working across North America.

In 2001 catalogues and ads started being produced camera ready (and in house), basically the start of another branch of T Bar C Cattle Co Ltd., known as Today’s Publishing Inc. first met ted when i was 16 and working for Bob Switzer on the summer show circuit in 1971. We traded help at the Saskatoon summer show and the rest of the show circuit. He had a few polled Herefords and Shorthorns and we had a large string of angus. We had a great time and some great parties celebrating our champions. ted even invented the “loser party” so we could celebrate when we didn’t do so well!

Following the 1972 Regina bull sale, i returned home to tell my mom that i had been offered a job for the summer show road by Larry (Flash) glasman. She quickly informed me that i could not work for that guy because he drank too much! i mentioned that a guy by the name of ted Serhienko offered me a job as well. Fortunately, she didn’t know ted or his habits so thought that would be oK. i started work for ted the end of June that year. i got $10 per day and he gave me $5 to buy my own meals. pay wasn’t great but i learned a lot from ted over the next 3 years: 1. Be responsible for your stuff. His crew were assigned their own brush and comb and you had to pay for it if you lost it or left it in the wash rack.

2. always pay your bills and pay your own way. ted always carried his cheque book and paid his feed tab at the end of every show.

He also made his crew chip in for beer at every show!

3. How to live on $5 per day. When we arrived at a show, we would unload cattle while ted found out where we could get bacon and eggs for $1. We mostly slept in the back of a 27-foot-long straight truck at the summer shows. He rented it from WB trailers and Bob Blacklock and i got a sign engraved that read “WB Motel no Charge.” in Red deer he announced that because we had such a great show in Calgary that he was renting a Motel room for all of us. after one night with three to a bed, not including the cockroaches, we asked if we could move back into the truck.

4. How to brush properly with a rice root brush and get the hair up without all the glue used today. He expected us to wear out one brush per week.

5. How to clip cattle, usually without a trimming chute. one day at agribition ted came up to me and in his hoarse voice said “davis, i’m going to give you a big responsibility today. i am going to let you clip all the Chianinas over in the horse barns!” He handed me a lariat and clippers. it didn’t go so well!

6. i learned to be a competitor. He liked to win and had a lot of success. His second agribition he showed two bull calves and had both calf Champions and Reserve Bull as well as Reserve Female for Roy Woodrick.

7. How to drink cheap Hudson’s Bay Jamaican Rum and enjoy it! never drink the entire bottle, you may need a “primer” in the morning before you got out of bed!

8. ted was quick to offer advice to his crew. He even gave us tips on how to pick up girls at the cattle shows! Bob Blacklock and i learned the words to Stompin tom’s “Bud the Spud” listening to ted sing while driving all night from Billings Montana to Vancouver.

9. ted could get many people to rally behind him and help him. at the pne in Vancouver one year, he asked all the other exhibitors if he could load out first as we had the longest drive home. everyone agreed and even helped us load the tack and cattle. We jumped in the truck and the starter had burnt out. everyone helped push the truck and trailer out of the way and they all loaded out and left while we sat and waited for the tow truck!

10. give credit where credit was due. He was quick to correct you when you weren’t doing it right but just as quick to praise you when you did a good job. We custom showed cattle and the owners who had the Champions often invited ted out to a steakhouse to celebrate. ted always accepted with one condition; “i’ll join you but only if the crew gets to come along as well.” He always included us and made sure the owners knew who got the cattle ready. the list goes on and i never quit learning from ted. When i got into the polled Hereford business, i had the pleasure of him working for me. He managed many consignment sales that we sold through and our production sale and dispersal. He did a great job and was very creative with advertising and catalogues. He shot from the hip and always wrote a cheque for 75% of proceeds collected that day. ted was always a big supporter of “Youth in agriculture.” He was a huge supporter of the dr. Scott Rairdan Charity golf Classic in support of youth and went on to organize the t Bar C invitational in support of the Junior Beef Breed associations. i watched ted closely as he grew t Bar C from scratch to a very successful Sale Management and publishing business. We would often compare notes over a rum at agribition. He had great advice for me as well and always was a great supporter of my et business. We had many a great time together at shows, sales and golfing. His home was always open to his friends and still is today. i look forward to many more visits and rounds of golf t Bar! Roger davis

to this day. The early success of TPI led to the Herefords Today magazine, publishing its first issue in February of 2003. This venture soon led to publishing Today’s Angus Advantage starting in 2005 and in 2007 they began the production of Simmental Country and the Limousin Voice for their respective breed associations.

Currently, Today’s Publishing produces over one hundred catalogues annually, as well as additional breed publications.

Ted has served on many boards and committees including Prairieland Exhibition Agricultural Committee, as well as the board of directors of Prairieland Exhibition. He also chaired Saskatoon Fall Fair, where he established the Cinderella Classic – the first all-breed heifer jackpot show to be judged by women in the industry. In addition, he founded the Steer Marketing Committee in Saskatoon, enabling the business community to have greater involvement with 4-H and the regional steer show and sale. Ted was also a committee member of the RBC Supreme Challenge at Canadian Western Agribition for many years. T Bar and Mina have been recognized for their years of volunteering by the Canadian Hereford Association, being added to their honour roll in 2011 and at CWA being honoured with the Burning of the Brand in 2014.

Ted and Mina, have always been heavily committed to Canada’s juniors. They have attended, promoted and financially supported junior activities across the country, as well as donating their time, money and often semen to various junior projects and endeavours. In 2007, the steady decrease in support for 4-H and the junior beef shows prompted the start of the T Bar Invitational golf tournament, which helped raise over $450,000 for youth in agriculture.

In June of 2013 T Bar sold his group of companies to Chris Poley. However, even though he takes more time down south every year...

his golf game has not improved as he is still busy writing stories, compiling mailing lists, doing research for dispersal sale catalogues and generally keeping active.

I

n 1972 i made my first truck and trailer trek from guelph, ontario to Calgary, alberta. i was driving John Wilmott’s (Hall of Famer) truck and gooseneck trailer with half a load of furniture from their house in Milton, ontario to their new house in pense, Saskatchewan. the other half of the trailer was full of Charolais cattle that were destined for the Stampede in Calgary. in the nose of the gooseneck we had some tack but it was primarily set up as living quarters for Joe Wilmott. in those days there were no extended/club cabs and i had another driver, it was a stick shift… you get the picture Joe ended up in the nose of the gooseneck and never once worried about privacy!

Joe was about 15 at the time and was going to work on the summer show circuit for this guy named ted Serhienko. i was to leave Joe in ted’s care by meeting him at the Swift Current Fair. We dropped off John and Marg’s furniture in pense (a good way to stretch after driving 36 hours). it was about 2 am when we arrived at the Swift Current Fair grounds. there was not a soul to be found except in one of the cattle barns i found two guys sprawled out sleeping on the bed of straw underneath some pedigree signs partially covered in ribbons and rosettes (mostly red in colour). i deduced that they had showed the cattle the day before and that just maybe a party had broken out. of the two lying in the straw i grabbed and shook the more senior one.

His blood shot eyes opened and finally focused on me and he said “what the... do you want” tHe VoiCe! Little did i know at the time that there would eventually be a tV show in his honour!

Yes, that is how i met ted Serhienko. Years later i concluded that the second person in the straw was Roger davis (not yet a doctor of vet med... thank goodness). it seemed from that point forward our paths crossed several times a year and we became lifetime friends. in the early years i met Mina and enjoyed watching her polish off some of ted’s rough edges. i attended and bought cattle from ted’s polled Hereford dispersal. i then watched the birth of their artificial flower business called totally tropical. during this era Mina’s cousin ada appeared on the scene. ada applied her highly disciplined bookkeeping / accounting skills to their flower business and to their growing ring service/sales management firm called t Bar C Cattle Co. Ltd. i have to give ted very high marks for his ability to embrace business practises and to apply them to his daily life experiences. However i should point out that it took both Mina and ada to keep him pointed in the right direction… lol t Bar surrounded himself with talented people not only in the office but in the field and developed t bar C into a sales management firm that had the VeRY RaRe capacity for high talent in the field coupled with precision in accounting and administration. now for a couple of stories about ted 1) You may have noticed that ted is very punctual. He was not always that way. i may have been an influencing factor in this area.

Several real years ago about 6 of us were travelling together attending sales in new england and then on to new Brunswick for albert goodine’s sale. Several times on the trip we all would agree to meet at a certain time to move on to the next event etc. each time the rest of us would wait for ted to appear. His tardiness became a focal point of annoyance amongst us. Finally while in new Brunswick we agreed to leave for the presale party (about a 30 minute drive) at 7pm. i looked ted in the eye and mentioned that it was a 7pm departure not later. at 7pm we were all gathered in the hotel lobby and you guessed it no ted.

We got in the car and i drove away without him to the shock of some fellow passengers. to this day i never asked him how he got to the party. i can only say that in hindsight i was thankful it was about a thirty minute drive to the party and as such by the time we had our nose to nose discussion his internal volcano had somewhat subsided. one of the things i like about ted is his quick intuitive learning process. the rest of the trip was timely indeed and it has been that way ever since.

2) in approximately 1981, i was on about a ten day trip visiting ranches in texas owned by current customers and some other ranches whose owners i hoped would become customers. i flew from dallas to new York to attend the ace polled Hereford Sale. ted and ed Jupp had driven from toronto to the sale as they were working ring. it absolutely poured rain at sale time so much so that the noise level on the sale barn roof overpowered the pa system. there was a delay for nearly two hours. i knew i would not make my flight from new York to toronto due to this delay so i asked ted and ed if i could catch a ride in their car. they said yes on the condition that i drive as they were planning to drink rum. the two of them had agreed to split the cost of the car rental. as i approached a toll booth on the south side of Buffalo i needed a dime to throw into the bucket. ed provided the dime and then entered this cost in his notebook. ted with a lot of enthusiasm mentioned in no uncertain terms how tight ed was. From there to toronto this topic of money was enhanced and supported by the energy and intelligence that only copious amounts of rum can provide. at the toronto airport i asked them if i could drive the car up to the fourth floor of the garage to get my car. the response was yes but to be quick about it. i received a parking stub on entry and around and around we went up to the fourth floor to my car.

to this day i am not sure what made me think of it but i decided to switch this new parking stub for the ten day stub from my car. i only managed to get the ten day stub into the back of their car. perhaps the circular route up to my car enhanced their head spin rate as they needed to follow me out to the exit. i pulled into an exit lane manned by a very polite immigrant boy, handed him my new found stub . He announced that there was no charge as i had been there under fifteen minutes. i exited very slowly looking in the rear view mirror to see ed and ted using hand signals in rapid succession towards this nice immigrant parking attendant. as i learned later they were explaining to this delightful immigrant parking lot attendant that they had only been there for a few minutes but did not have their parking stub. the very kind but firm immigrant parking lot attendant tried explaining to them that without the stub the minimum charge was 5 dollars. Well as you can imagine with the heightened financial awareness brought on by the dime earlier in the day they refused to pay the $5. they backed up and pulled over to quickly find the parking stub on the back seat. they pulled back into the same exit lane to proudly and indignantly present the parking stub to the same immigrant parking attendant who immediately put the stub in his computer. the large neon sign read $44.00. now apparently after an hour with the nice, young immigrant parking attendant plus another hour or so with security and the parking lot manager, they had reached a level of sobriety that allowed them to figure out that they had been duped! on my one hour drive from toronto to guelph i started laughing and there was no way to control it! i slid into bed but soon had angela awake to hear the story. it is always better to have someone to laugh with! about 3 a.m. the phone rang! Let’s just leave it that they provided me with an opportunity to selectively expand my vocabulary. Yes indeed! p.S. although it was never confirmed, reportedly the nice, young, polite immigrant immediately went back to his home country! as i understand it now, Mina is encouraging ted to retire and he is doing so kicking and screaming. ok i know, just kicking not screaming! i am back to the free ad again for the Voice. david Hasson

ed Serhienko and Remitall history has had an incredible journey together. ted started as a teenager with Remitall. two teenagers working together i have to say was quite an experience. Louis & Carroll expected the most from everyone on the crew.

obviously from the beginning ted was a better cattleman than tractor man. Which meant he was soon working on the show and sale cattle. From than on his love for good cattle and great cattlemen only got better. He was a natural at this but soon learned that he wanted to be sales and help you sell your cattle. it has been a life lesson rembering all the heated debates over which was the best herd bull or the best show heifer or how they should be promoted. these debates have gone on for decades but i value all of them to this day. it was always interesting to travel across Canada and especially Saskatchewan to hear ted’s stories about the cattle business and how prosperous every year gets. My life has gotten a lot easier now that “ted is not giving me Hell” about something. Joking aside ted has been a great friend and cattleman for the industry and tried to make it better for all of us. We appreciate ted iand all that he has done for us and the cattle industry. gary Latimer

s a past president of the Canadian Western agribition, i would like to take this opportunity to thank ted Serhienko for his many years of dedication to the CWa. We are thankful not only for his time as a volunteer ringing for the First Lady, or our premier Show, the RBC Beef Supreme, but simply for his presence at these shows. there have been very few days since the show’s inception that ted has not walked the aisles of agribition. He has attended every agribition first as a custom fitter and exhibitor, then as a sale manager. i would dare say there is no one more well-known or who has positively influenced more people at the show, than ted. the number of sales that ted has managed or been involved in as sales staff, is unmatched,. He’s a real professional. on that note, i have had the pleasure of working with ted on many occasions over the years. as a rookie ring man, i learned a lot from ted - many things i still utilize today. Without a doubt, at the top of that list, is the importance of working hard and professionally for those who have entrusted you to work their sale. ted has always lived up to this high standard. on behalf of Canadian Western agribition and myself personally, tHanK You, to both ted & Mina for your many years of friendship, and service to the Beef industry.

ot sure where i should begin to make a few comments about ted, known as t-Bar one of kind, never to be duplicated. i will always remember my first meeting with ted in 1979. i flew into Saskatoon to look at a herd of cattle he was trying to sell. He picked me up at the airport in his old, beat up brown Ford pickup that had a lot of cracks in the windshield. We travel about one and a half hours out to see the cattle and then go to the house around 5pm to visit, telling each other we would only stay an hour. after a number of rums (the first time i had rum) we left around 10:00 or 10:30 for Saskatoon. neither one of us were in real good shape. ted tossed the keys my way and crawls in the passenger door to go to sleep. i had no idea where we were or how we got here let alone the way back to Saskatoon. Remember i was young and this was my very first trip to western Canada. ted spits out the directions with a few slurs: turn left out the drive, follow the gravel to the 2nd stop sign, turn right when you hit the blacktop, go left into Saskatoon. Being young and the new kid on the block i followed directions as ted slept really questioning if i heard him right. this trip is at least 45 minutes or more on gravel roads, i was actually afraid to wake him and not sure he would know where we were at anyways. i hit the black top and turned toward Saskatoon and drove along for a few minutes or so when he rises up from a dead sleep and growls out... slow down the Mounties will be out in the next town and falls back to sleep. Sure enough a mile down the road we come into town and there is the Mountie sitting alongside the road. i was impressed and became a t-Bar believer right then! over the years he and Mina became friends with my wife Rhonda and i. one of the high lights every year when we made the eastern sale circuit was seeing ted and the gang. anyone that knows ted understands he will say anything or do anything to get someone to bid or buy an animal especially after he had a rum or two. that deep raspy voice is known throughout our industry and respected as one of the best at his trade. ted dedicated his time and energy to making purebred livestock more valuable for all. His impact on the industry reached worldwide. He has the special ability to reach out to new breeders and bring them into the circle. He is not shy about telling you what you might need to do to make your herd better. the people listen and respected his opinion because for the most part he was right. Breeders across Canada and the uSa have benefited from t-Bar’s expertise, knowledge and assisting both, buyers and sellers. ted, you understand the people as well as understanding the business. You have been willing to help anyone that asked. He and Mina dedicated a lifetime to making our industry better. Many including myself need to thank them for all their hard work.

Because ted liked a party he made sure there was always a place to party for everyone, i mean everyone was welcome, pour yourself a rum and sit down. new breeders and old breeders made friends when ted was running the show. the show might become X rated but it was good for a laugh or two, and he made you feel welcome. a lesson everyone needs to remember when dealing with people. ted is a people person first and then a cattleman. t- Bar: said with respect by everyone, is an iconic personality within our industry. a loyal friend and true promoter of everyone that enjoys good people, good cattle and good times and he made good times for all!

Chris asked me if i would write a short word about my long-time friend and fellow marketer, ted Serhienko. i first met ted in the late 70’s or early 80’s, probably at a Louada Farms or aCe polled Hereford sale and our friendship was made.

We worked many sales and traveled a lot of miles together and had a bit of fun along the way. ted was always a good hand and knew the Hereford selling business as well as anyone i ever had the pleasure to work with. ted and his lovely wife, Mina, made a great sale management team; they were very professional and always worked to get top dollar for their clients. i was happy to be employed by them on many of the great u.S. and Canadian sales. together we would have sold millions of dollars’ worth of Hereford seedstock. ted knew the breeders and their programs and was a master with people. He has meant a lot to the cattle industry. He loved what he did and it showed in the work he accomplished. i consider him a true friend. i wish him and Mina the best in the years to come. eddie C. ’ve known ted Serienko for almost 50 years. He used to bring a show string of cattle to the pne in Vancouver for Roy Wudrick and doug Morris.

Fast forward to 1977. ted and i became friends when we both started to get into the sales business. ted as a ring man and myself as an auctioneer. We were not exactly welcomed into the industry with open arms by the Blacklock Family. ted and i persevered and when they saw that we weren’t going away they began to tolerate us. in the hundreds of sales that ted and i have conducted along with the miles we have traveled in the last 40 years, the stories that we can actually tell on each other are few and far between. to say that ted Serienko is one of the most colorful characters, on both sides of the border, would be an understatement. one of the stories that i can tell took place at a sale that ted and i did in edmonton. it was 20 years ago. this story is centered around my mother.

My mother was a retired school teacher. She lived on Vancouver island at the time. She was in edmonton visiting my younger brother. i had been doing sales for almost 20 years before my mother saw me auction a sale. She arrived at the sale and i introduced her to ted, Mark Stock, and dennis ericson, my partners in crime for the day.

We started the sale and my mother sat in the front row taking in the event. as you all know, what we all do can best be described as a combination between a circus and an old time Baptist Revival with animals mixed in for good measure. the sale took almost 2 hours. at the end of the event, once again the sale staff ended up at the after sale social, of all places. the interesting thing about our business, whether the sale is good or bad, we always seem to have an after sale social. We were by the bar when my mother walked up. She started asking questions. the first thing she wanted to know was, “do people actually pay you for doing this?” ted stepped forward and said, “Yes they do, and actually, Mrs. dorran they pay us quite well.” My mother nodded as if she really understood. She looked at the four of us standing there and said, “gentlemen, if i were you, i suggest you try to find a more dignified way to make a living.” We all looked at each other. We couldn’t believe that this lady had actually just thrown our profession under the bus. We made a quick recovery and went back to the bar and ordered another drink. in closing, i wish ted and Mina a happy semi retirement. He is still going to do his stories and his editorial for the magazines and special catalogues. ted’s articles and editorials are always well written and very insightful, not only about agriculture but life itself. i’m wondering if a book is going to be written in the not too distant future. please make it fictional, we don’t want you naming names. t Bar, see you down the road. A

small town farm boy becomes the founder of one of the most successful marketing companies of purebred cattle in the country... not bad for a “ukrainian from Blaine Lake,” as ted often referred to himself.

Many of you may recall the number of times you climbed the stairs to the office of t Bar C, located in the norplex Building on avenue C in Saskatoon. perhaps you toted along a semen tank to grab those precious straws of semen ted just brought in or maybe you just came to town and stopped by to see what was happening. Some may have come in to ask ted if he had a sale for their cattle. others would recall meeting ted in the middle of nowhere Saskatchewan at a bull sale, with their semen tank and exchanging a quick, cold handshake.

My first visit lasted quite long... about 35 years in fact! i did cart that semen tank up the stairs, then i found out that there was an elevator! too late. Many things happened throughout those years...ted married Mina; i purchased my first purebred Hereford cow/calf pair; ted and Mina purchased their own franchise in the silk plant business; i became a permanent fixture of t Bar C... catalogues and plant orders rolled out the door. Who would have thought that cattle and silk plants would do so well! this was not all without blood, sweat and tears. Consider the continuous travelling, hotel rooms or a spare bedroom at a farmer’s house, lack of sleep, fast food joints and Mother nature. along with the hard work involved, there were the friends that helped out, good fellowship, as well as the rewards of having a successful sale. ted travelled those many miles and shook many hands, with some pretty influential people. the Bull Book was one of the first of t Bar’s own publications and it became quite popular, internationally. it was influenced mostly by uS and Canadian Hereford bulls. there were, however, bulls from new Zealand and australia at one point. agribition was the common ground for the Bull Book supply. Montie Soules from Star Lake Cattle Company; Randy and Kelly owens from tennessee River Music, Frank and Mark Miller, ned and Jan Ward of nJW polled Herefords (who are still supplying us with Hereford semen), just to name very few of the people that ted brought into the realm of t Bar C. i remember being quite thrilled after ted came up to me and said, “do you know who that was on the phone?” i replied, “no.” “do you know who Sawyer Brown is?” of course i did. ted was even selling Hereford semen for country bands, along with that were even tickets to some of the shows that came to Saskatoon and area. the business boomed... from several friends getting together to create a small cattle sale for the first time to some of the largest dispersal sales in Canadian history! ted is an honest man and says exactly what he thinks is necessary for his customers to excel in the industry, sometimes maybe not what you want to hear but always the truth. He opened many doors for a lot of people with his knowledge of cattle and people, as well as his creativity... Herefords today, today’s angus advantage, today’s publishing, t Bar invitational, just to name a few ways he bonded these all together. now ted and Mina are moving on to discover the realm of retirement. not complete retirement however, as they still help out where needed. they have created and sold a wonderful business but who knows what other ideas may pop up along the way, i am sure ted will keep us posted. to a small town farm boy from Blaine Lake, from a small town farm girl from Blaine Lake, “Salute!” debbie thiessen

have known t Bar most of my life... my first experience would have been at the age of twelve when he judged the Weldon 4-H beef club achievement day. i didn’t do very well. the first time i ever sold cattle with him working ring, he told me i had better not quit my day job. the next time i worked with him it was a bull sale at my own auction Market, a few years had gone by and i had gained a great deal of real world selling experience. that day he shook my hand and told me i had come a long way. after that for whatever reason he gave me his endorsement to whoever would listen. not having grown up in the purebred industry or the auction business this was huge to me, as i was not going to be able to ride in on anyone’s coat tails. this would have been one of the first things we had in common, no family ties to the business, just determination and a stubborn attitude to succeed. ted and i have become great friends in the past dozen or so years when we began travelling together. His many stories of the “good old days” both in the custom fitting business and the auction business have kept us awake driving down the road late at night. ted has truly seen more and worked sales throughout north america than any other Canadian. He has totally dedicated his life to the promotion and marketing of the purebred livestock industry, ask anyone close to him and they will tell you the cow business came first in ted’s world. For those of you Hereford breeders you will never have another ambassador who bleeds red and white as hard or as long as ted Serhienko has.

Many members have hit the classroom and everyone is excited for what the next few months have to offer! Fall has kicked off and I couldn’t be more excited for the next few months!

Before heading back to school, I represented the CJHA in the United Kingdom for 10 days on a trip of a lifetime. While in England, I spent my days touring various herds, attending cattle shows, and touring the beautiful countryside.

Some of my main stops included the “Hereford House,” which is also known as the Hereford Cattle Society Office, herd visits including The Fabb Herd, Haven Herefords, Classic Polled Herefords, and Wiltshire College, and attended the National Polled Show.

Attending the National Polled Show was a remarkable experience. To meet all the breeders from across the UK, as well as seeing top quality cattle from all the countries was an experience I will never forget.

Everyone in the UK was so welcoming, and very interested in the Canadian Junior Hereford program, myself and my herd back home. Being able to connect and share my story was incredible. While at the Polled Show, I participated in their Young Handlers competitions. The Friday night Young Handlers Competition was similar to our Showmanship. I was honoured to be Champion Senior and Reserve Overall Young Handler. On Saturday during the open show, they also do a Young Handlers Competition where you wear a letter, and a judge watches

you throughout the day to see how involved you are, your showing skills, as well as how interactive you are. I was fortunate enough to be Reserve Senior Champion Young Handler. When comparing our showing style to the British showing style, they are quite different! It was so interesting to learn a new style and see how they present their cattle compared to the Canadian way.

I would like to thank the CJHA for giving me the opportunity to travel to the UK. I would also like to thank everyone in the United Kingdom that welcomed me into their homes, and took the opportunity to visit with myself and learn more about the Canadian Junior Hereford Association. I would also like to extend a huge thank you Emma Smith and her family for taking me in for ten days and allowing me to expand my knowledge and learn more about UK Herefords. This was a trip I will never forget!

The cool weather and kids back to school only means one thing, its fall show and sale season! There are many sales happening and many fall shows about to get underway. If you are looking to increase your herd, there are many females on offer this fall that will be perfect for any junior!

given many juniors opportunities to improve their knowledge and develop their herd over the years. I would like to thank all the supporters and mentors of the CJHA who have helped grow the association and have given the juniors of the Hereford breed a bright future. Without the support of breeders across Canada the CJHA would not be able to offer projects like Bonanza, the Heifer Lottery, Semen Donation, Fact Sheets and the Calendar Project. These projects offer great opportunity for our youth and I thank everyone who has supported that.

Dwayne Thompson Black of Oakville, New Brunswick passed away suddenly on Thursday August 10, 2017 at the age of 56. Dwayne will be sadly missed by his family and friends. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Lisa Carter; daughter Candace Black (Petawawa, Ontario); son Brock Black (at home); two brothers Terry (Connie) Black of Bloomfield, New Brunswick and Dale (Lisa) Black of Bloomfield, New Brunswick; nieces and nephews Pam Black, Shawn (Sarah) Black, Meghan Black, Ashley Black; and great nephew and niece Nathan and Allison Black. Dwayne is predeceased by his parents Ronald and Garnella (Bell) Black.

Dwayne was born on February 3, 1961 in Woodstock, New Brunswick.

Dwayne was blessed to have been raised on the family’s potato and cattle farm and from this, grew a great passion for agriculture and cattle - especially Herefords.

Dwayne along with his brother Dale bought their first Hereford in the late 1970s.

They started out buying locally, then while in search of new genetics, they headed west and bought cattle from Square D Polled Herefords and Bob Gordon. They worked hard all year and saved their money. When it came to be sale time, whatever they had saved they used to buy another Hereford to continue to build their herd. Black’s Polled Herefords and the “notorious Black brothers” were soon making their mark on the Hereford breed. Dwayne considered his greatest show ring accomplishment, winning Reserve Grand Champion Female at the Royal in 1984.

Dwayne attended every cattle show and sale that he could get to far and wide. He enjoyed being part of the ‘Carleton-Victoria Hereford Club.’ He was an active board member of the New Brunswick Hereford Association, Maritime Hereford Association, Carleton County Spring Show and Sale, Old Home Week and was a proud 4-H leader.

Dwayne had a great enthusiasm for being involved in several steer shows. He showed his first steer in 1978 at the Carleton County Spring Show and Sale and had earned numerous Champions and Reserves over the years. Dwayne was passionate about the cattle industry. He was keen on genetics, showing, fitting and judging. He appreciated good cattle of any breed, but his heart stayed true to the Hereford breed. 4-H and Junior shows held a special place in his heart. He loved all kids and has mentored many over the years.

The careers he pursued throughout his lifetime always followed his passion for the agriculture industry. He was a herdsman for multiple farms, worked in a meat shop and rarely missed a potato harvest from the time he was a young boy with his brothers up until a few years ago. For over twenty years he helped get bulls ready at the Maritime Beef Test Station in Nappan, Nova Scotia. Dwayne started working as an A.I. Technician in the 1980’s for Eastern Breeders, and in 2012, he joined the EastgenInc team. Dwayne started his own hoof trimming business in 1996 and did this up until his time of passing.

Dwayne met Lisa showing cattle in Halifax, Nova Scotia. They laughed, loved and shared their passion for the cattle industry for many years. He was so proud to be Candace and Brock’s dad. He always put his children first making time to attend all 4-H events, basketball games, hockey games and baseball practices. Besides his love of cattle, he loved family gatherings and had a real talent for cooking and preserves. He was famous for his salsa and fudge!

Dwayne loved meeting people and making lifelong friends. He truly loved and cared for his entire family, friends, neighbors, church family, clients and customers. He had a special gift for helping those in need, going out of his way to take care of those he loved as well as complete strangers. Dwayne had the ability to instantly uplift a room with his sense of humor and wit. He wanted to make everyone laugh; he was one of a kind! Dwayne will always be remembered for his mischievous ways, pulling pranks and keeping everyone on their toes!

Peggy Vey of Wakaw, SK passed away on July 26, 2017 at the age of 78 years, following a brief battle with cancer at the Rosthern Health Centre. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Joe Vey Jr.; children: Deborah (Tim), Lenore (Ray), Shannon (Lynette); three grandchildren, Samantha, Jesse (Shanyne), Nathaniel (Amber) and three great grandchildren: Keeley, Brandon and Tyhlar.

Peggy was born in the Middle Lake district January 2, 1939 where she grew up and attended school.

She met her lifelong friend and husband Joe Vey Jr. They were married on November 14, 1956 and together raised three children who were all active in sports, farming and many community activities.

Peggy loved all kinds of animals. Any stray animal found a permanent home in her heart and at the farm. Peggy and Joe started raising Polled Hereford cattle over 51 years ago. Her love of Hereford cattle was evident to all of those who knew her. Together they showed/exhibited cattle at numerous places throughout North America. To mention a few: Denver, Toronto Royal, British Columbia, Brandon MB, Calgary, Olds, Edmonton, and close to home in Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Lloydminster and Agribition. They are proud of the livestock raised and always a great promoter of Hereford cattle.

Peggy and Joe worked away from the farm in the summers for 32 years at a Fly-In Fishing Camp in northern Saskatchewan. Leaving in late May and returning home in early fall, making sure they had time to look after their herd.

Peggy was the main chef at the Fishing Camp in northern Saskatchewan. While working in the north, Peggy and Joe met many people from across North America, trading stories and making new friends.
