What can you say about an opportunity like this one? RSK 8X was loved as a heifer calf by everyone who looked at her, and adored as a bred. This female has been a true powerhouse right from the beginning. RSK 8X is sired by Walk Hard and out of an Aberdeen female that is in the RSK donor pen. RSK 8X has tremendous volume and capacity, great shape with deep hip and flank. She also shows great eye appeal and is short-marked with pigment. RSK Miss Tamara 8X is a dominant young female that will for sure make donor ranks in the future. This is definitely a bred heifer that will make a positive impact on any herd and great investment.

Herefords Today Fall 2011  11
You ought to know… As settlers immigrated to Canada and cultivated their homesteads, many produced red spring wheat; the Province in which we live was once referred to as the “Bread Basket” of the country. But growth was slow and some residents moved west, building new careers in non agricultural fields. Saskatchewan was referred to as that tract of land between Winnipeg and Calgary airports; the standing joke was that “Seagulls flew upside down because there was nothing to drop on while passing through.” No doubt political attitude played a role, as the left wing carried much of the clout for over half a century. Although the late Tommy Douglas modeled the “medi-care” system (which has been copied by many countries throughout the world), privatization of the province’s resources were frowned upon by politicians and their followers; this attitude left Saskatchewan to become the last frontier in Canada. The past five years of political change has moved Saskatchewan from a “have not” to a “have” province. Premier Brad Wall (after winning the election) declared Saskatchewan “Open for business” and the attitude of its residents changed a full one-eighty, as the influx of new investment dollars filtered in from outside its borders, taking advantage of the wealth of resources the province offered. In less than five years, Saskatchewan has become the fastest growing province in Canada (maybe the world), simply by having a young positive attitude and products which the entire global nation requires to sustain a livelihood. Throughout the era of red spring wheat and Tommy Douglas, the “White Face” breed was king as it blanketed every pasture from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Feather-necked calves filled auction barns as order buyers vied to place stockers into feedlots; many going east to Ontario and Quebec. But with dominance comes complacency and as the import of continental breeds from Europe entered North America, the breed found that they had to compete with both the performance factor of imports in addition to the magic of hybrid vigor. Although these cross-bred calves all came out of Hereford mothers, the new high performance feeding calves were identified in the commercial industry by their sires (i.e. char-cross, etc.). Bull markets ebbed, changing the attitude of the breeder and the horned-polled stigma put a degree of disunity into the breed. In the same parallel as the province of Saskatchewan, the Hereford breed stands on the threshold of a new exciting era. For decades, Canadian Herefords have been the source of genetic improvement for breeders throughout the world. The strength of any breed is the ability to sell its bulls; but during the past two decades Hereford bull trade has declined; combined with seven years of BSE and the population of purebred seedstock producers dwindling. Throughout this time period, the Hereford has not changed any of the necessary requirements it contributes to the commercial sector. Temperament, hair, bone, conversion, cow maintenance, do-ability and the ability to mate with any breed (producing a better product than either breed involved) has not been compromised, but most importantly, Herefords will survive and succeed in all environments around the globe. Today, the problem lies in supply and demand. In the past several years, export companies have done an admiral job of exporting Canadian breeding stock, mainly females, to Eastern European countries; which has Herefords Today Fall 2011 12
created a shortage of breeding females. Increased prices and an aging breeder population has further reduced numbers to a point that we have a Hereford shortage in this country, while the commercial sector still requires a percentage of Herefords in the system. There are more Hereford bulls running with black cows each year and that trend will increase considerably, since Angus producers can market the resulting baldies under their branded system, while taking advantage of the benefit of heterosis. Although this advantage will help Hereford bull sales, as Angus cows are homozygous polled, the majority of foreign countries are demanding the polled factor. The strength and demand for the Hereford breed is evidenced in countries other than Canada. Down under in Australia, this being their bull sale season, 3010 Hereford bulls to date, are averaging $5300.00 at public auction, with the average up 21% over last year and the number of bulls sold up 11%. South of the 49th parallel, the Americans report that the average price of Hereford bulls has increased 22% and the average price for breeding females is up 20% over the year prior. The National Association of Animal Breeders in the United States reports that in the now completed 2010-2011 fiscal year, Hereford semen sales increased by 17% over the previous year. This increase in semen sales overshadows the overall, all-breeds increase of only 2%. In the American Certified Beef Program (CHB), (established in 1995 by the AHA to offer the food industry superior branded beef products and to enhance the demand for purebred Hereford cattle), the 2011 fiscal year posted their second highest year at 40.5 million pounds marketed. The largest growth was in the food service sector, with an increase of 47% going into the restaurant trade. Currently, Certified Hereford Beef is offered in 233 retail supermarkets in 35 states, as well as 37 food service distribution centers serving restaurants in 25 states. The winds of change are also appearing at sale barns across the nation. Dealers and market owners are slowly becoming more favorable to the breed, with some actually saying we need more good Hereford bulls. Quality Hereford calves are no longer discounted and Hereford-cross stockers are yielding a premium. As far as good replacement females, they are few in numbers and rarely offered for sale. These strong signals, coupled with a stronger than normal spring bull sale season, have put a new bullish attitude in the field. No doubt, a strong rising cattle market makes everyone feel good, but many of the graduates of the Canadian Junior Hereford program are also stepping forward, extending leadership in the breed. This new attitude and youthful influence, combined with a closer melding of polled and horned breeders will ensure unification. Since it is difficult to find herds of commercial straight-bred Herefords, the breed will not be able to produce enough inventories to supply the demand. In this period of challenge to increase stock and market share, we must constantly be aware that the products we produce are better than those from the past and not to become complacent in our breeding and marketing decisions. Enjoy the uphill ride and don’t under sell your product!
I just thought you ought to know‌

It’s a story that’s common to families whose ancestors settled the West. Whether they came north from the United States or west across Canada, it was often one young adventurous soul who set out to find his future on virgin land. Today, there is little land left unsettled, but the love of nature’s beautiful places remains. There are still young people who are determined to preserve the pristine beauty and conserve the water, land and wildlife for future generations. Jenkins Ranche, situated in the south west corner of Alberta, was founded in 1888 as the dream of Henry (Harry) Herbert Jenkins, or “H.H.” as he is referred to by the family. He was the son of J.T. Jenkins, MD of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. H.H. left veterinary college in PEI to join the North West Mounted Police (NWMP) and was stationed out of Regina, Saskatchewan at Wood Mountain during the Riel Rebellion. He was Sergeant of the Guard during Riel’s imprisonment and subsequent hanging. H.H. remained with the NWMP until 1888 with leave of absence during his tenure to complete his degree in veterinary medicine. After receiving his discharge, H.H. travelled farther west and started a horse ranch. He fell in love with land that bordered the Kootenai (now Waterton) River and lay at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. That original parcel of Jenkins land now also borders the Waterton Dam. H.H.’s father, Dr. J.T. Jenkins, came from PEI to ranch with his son, but soon changed his mind and returned east. H.H. used his native pastures for Durham cattle and sheep, but he also bred, raised and trained polo ponies, some draft horses, and cavalry mounts. He sold cavalry mounts to the NWMP, but as his herd increased, he realized he needed to be more aggressive about selling his horses. He culled 100 odd-coloured horses and herded them north in search of buyers. By the time he reached the present site of the city of Edmonton, approximately 350 miles north, he only had 11 horses left to sell. A homesteader on that site offered him 80 acres of his bush land in exchange for the horses, but H.H. couldn’t imagine what good that land would be! H.H. married Maude Bery, a local girl, in 1895, and they had three sons and

one daughter. In 1909 H.H. purchased another parcel of land bordering what is now the Waterton Lakes National Park. That land would become the headquarters for Jenkins Ranche to the present time. Their youngest son, Stephen Walter, married Georgie Graham Huddleston in 1920, and they had one daughter, Mic, and three sons, Tom, Bob and Joe. All three sons remained to manage the ranch, and another section of land was added at Hillspring in 1969. Jenkins Ranche was by then over 4,000 acres of deeded and lease land. The Hereford white faces started showing up rather unexpectedly around 1920. As the story goes, a stray Hereford bull from the neighbouring Cochrane Ranch spent the summer among Jenkins’ Durham cows, and the resulting calves were so impressive, they couldn’t be denied. In 1936 the Jenkins purchased the first registered Hereford females, and by 1938 they were aggressively breeding registered Hereford cattle. Eventually the commercial cattle were phased out, and by the mid 1940’s both the extensive horse and sheep herds were disposed of as well. Jenkins Ranche prospered over the years under the management of the Jenkins family and Stephen and Georgie’s three sons. They purchased their cattle from some of the most reputable ranches of the time, and by 1964 the herd consisted completely of registered cattle. By 1978 the ranch had set up an aggressive A.I. program that allowed them to breed to the noteworthy bulls of the time such as Mr. Mo Le 47F, LRD Standard Britisher 79J, L1 Domino 72269 and CH Domino 053. The Jenkins were so impressed with the CH Domino 053 calves that in 1980 they purchased an interest in the American Line One bull, 053, and bred over 200 females to him. To this day, they believe the L1 influence bulls are the most suited to their program. The changing times as well as the growth and succession of the Jenkins family has created changes on the ranch. By the late 1990’s they realized that with aging family members and changing family interests, the land must either be divided or sold. The 14 remaining family members owning Jenkins Ranche,
Mic, Tom, Bob, Joe and their children, collectively agreed that their priority was to conserve the land and protect the ranch from destructive management such as urban development, commercial business or anything that would exploit the natural landscape, for example wind farms. It was essential to the Jenkins that they continue their role as stewards of the land. In 2001 the ranch was sold to the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC), and Bob Jenkins and his daughter, Jennifer, leased back the ranch headquarters, consisting of 3,600 acres bordering Waterton National Park, for 50 years. The Nature Conservancy is the country’s leading land conservation organization, working to protect our most important natural areas and the species they sustain. Bob and Jennifer are working hand and hand with the NCC to preserve the waterways and natural ecosystem for the future. Now as the fourth generation and the youngest member of the Jenkins family to carry on the dream of H.H. Jenkins, Jennifer takes her role seriously. She works closely with the Conservancy to ensure proper management of the land. She appreciates that they recognize the land must be managed and that cattle are a natural way to achieve that goal. Bob and Jeanne Jenkins raised their only child, Jennifer (Jen), with the great

outdoors as her playground and Mother Nature as her friend. She grew up on the back of a horse observing the wildlife, respecting the land and admiring the Hereford cattle. When Jen was six years old and starting Grade 1, her parents divorced and she moved to live with her mother Jeanne in Lethbridge. She spent the next nine years in Lethbridge, but her heart was at the ranch, and she never missed an opportunity to return. When she graduated Grade 9 in the city, Jen moved back with her father and completed her high school in Pincher Creek. “Nothing topped being with Dad and the cows,” Jen recalls. “We didn’t have television back then, so in the evenings Dad would open the Hereford Digest to a page with pictures of several animals. Then he would ask me to place them and give him my reasons. To me we were just having fun, but when I look back, I see he was teaching me. We would do the same with our own cattle. When we were touring the herd he would ask me to choose my favourite bull. Then he would coach me by asking me why he was my favourite bull. I would have done anything back then to get out of school and go to the Calgary Bull Sale with Dad. As far as I was concerned, it was the event of the year! I dreamt about exhibiting the Grand Champion Bull there someday. When Dad and I took cattle to shows, he never stopped teaching me. Before the show we would walk the ring observing where the holes were, and we even observed the lighting to choose the prime spots to showcase our animals. The first time I showed cattle without Dad was when I was 15. I didn’t have my driver’s licence yet, so Dad drove my girlfriend and me to Lethbridge and dropped us off with six head of cattle. I’ll never forget the first night we tied out. I lay in bed awake worrying that the cattle would get loose.” When Jen lived in Lethbridge, she wanted to be a 4-H member so bad that she joined any club she could including cooking and sewing. When she got back to the ranch she joined the 4-H beef club exhibiting some steers, but mostly heifers. “I had a wonderful 4-H leader in the Timber Trails
Club in Cowley,” Jen tells me. “She had Shorthorn cattle and she became my mentor. I even leased a Shorthorn cow from her. When I was 16 and got my driver’s licence, a girlfriend and I loaded up three head and set out to the summer shows. That began my dream of becoming a ‘show princess’ and custom fitter! It became a large part of my existence and my education in the purebred industry!” For her later teens and early twenties Jen experienced the show road with various breeds. “I seemed to think I wanted to own anything except Herefords back then,” Jen confesses. “I wanted Angus or Charolais or Shorthorns, but I especially wanted Maine Anjou cattle. They seemed to be the flashy breed at that time.” Jen did custom work for several breeders in various breeds. She worked for Gerry Roe in the Charolais breed, Dunford Royal Cattle Company in the Limousin breed, NCX Polled Herefords, and several others. She travelled the summer circuit from Armstrong, to Lethbridge, Olds, Red Deer, Stettler and Lloydminster. In the fall she worked production sales and custom fit at Edmonton Farmfair, Regina Canadian Western Agribition, Denver Stock Show and once in Houston. In the spring she worked bull sales. Jen was receiving her “college degree” in the purebred industry.

remainder registered Herefords. Jen and Bob are committed to raising economical, functional and problem-free Hereford seed stock with a minimal amount of maintenance. “Our goal is to raise honest ranch cattle that will compete in the pasture and the show ring!” Jen says. “We are very lucky to be supported by our local community by way of private treaty sales, and our commercial clients need bulls that can walk a lot of long hard miles in the hills! I think we have to take a little different approach than some places. Most of the cows calve outside, and we must focus on calving ease. They have to have the ability to forage for feed and water. We all have to figure out what type of cattle work in our area!”
Jen & Jeff
Besides private treaty sales, beginning in 1976 and for approximately eight years, Jenkins Ranche held an annual production sale each November at the Fort Macleod Auction Market. They also fed bulls at Prairie Feeders Bassano (Ltd.) Performance Feeders and sold them in the “Line One Influence Sale”. They exhibited cattle throughout Western Canada for numerous years, consigned bulls to the Calgary Bull Sale, sold large groups of bulls into the U.S., and have exported cattle as far away as Brazil.
When Bob Jenkins decided to pursue a political career and sit on the MD of Pincher Creek Council, he stepped back “Working with all the other breeds from the purebred industry for a time and taught me to look at cattle differently,” stopped registering his Herefords. When HH Advance 8248U she observes. “I saw things I liked and Bob and Jen partnered in the ranch, Jen I saw things I didn’t like. It taught me brought a new perspective and young to look at cattle as a whole. I learned to enthusiasm for the purebred industry. She evaluate all different breeds of cattle, and has started to build back the registered now with maturity and our ranch being herd and is putting a strong emphasis involved in the commercial industry as on maternal traits. She now exhibits at well, my experiences have made me a Edmonton Farmfair and Canadian Western better cattle person.” Jen would perhaps Agribition, and is looking towards the consider adding a complimentary breed at Denver Stock Show in the future. She the ranch, but she finds that the Hereford plans to consign to the Medicine Hat Bull JENRAN 408 HARLAND 14U cattle continue to work really well for Sale next spring, and for the past three them. “They seem to manage well in years Jenkins Ranche has returned to the our conditions,” she tells me. “They are Calgary Bull Sale. If you remember, Jen’s suited to the environment here and I do goal since her youth was to have the Grand a lot by myself. I do most of my work Champion Bull at the Calgary Bull Sale. on horseback, and I can safely handle the Well, it happened in 2011! Sale and sold to the Red Willow Colony at Stettler. Now Jen is setting new goals! “In recent years, Farmfair and the Hereford Genes Event has been an exceptional showcase for our cattle,” Jen believes. “Local ranchers associate Farmfair with the Canadian National Finals Rodeo, so they are already in Edmonton. Having a string of cattle there is a bonus attraction for them.” Presently, Jen and Bob calve their cows from mid March through April and May on a native pasture they hold over for that reason. They have a calving barn about two miles from home where Jen keeps the first calf heifers close. The barn is without power, but it is a shelter from the often harsh Southern Alberta winds. Starting in May, the cows spend their summer on well managed native pastures, and the Jenkins also grow about 480 acres of tame grass for hay. The remainder of the hay is purchased. They wean their calves in mid October. “We try to keep some native grass for fall grazing,” Jen says. “If all goes well, they can stay on that until January. The blessing about the Southern Alberta wind is that the snow doesn’t build up. After we wean, we sell the calves in the Balog 2nd. British Breed sale held at Lethbridge the first week of November.” They keep some replacement heifers and background the remaining calves. Jen has bred some of her registered cattle to calve earlier in

Jen believes in using an A.I. program as a herd building tool, and over the past number of years has selected sires she feels possess strong maternal traits, calving ease and positive carcass data. One of those selected sires was CJH Harland 408, who has been an excellent calving ease bull and also sired high quality females. She has now used three of his sons in their purebred herd and is very pleased with their offspring. In addition to their A.I. program, Jen purchased a bull from Holden Herefords in Montana, HH ADVANCE 8248U. This bull has exceptional EPD’s, including being ranked in the top 5% of the breed for R.E.A. His offspring have surpassed Jen’s expectations and she feels these cattle will be an asset to both purebred and commercial breeders. In 2011, Jen bred 60 females to this sire and anticipates that his offspring will be featured at the World Hereford Conference next summer. Jen continues to support the 4-H movement. She has held fitting or clipping clinics and has done some judging, and says she just loves spending time with young breeders that have enthusiasm for their cattle. Jen is extending her love of the industry by sitting on the Alberta Hereford Association Board, as well as the Show Committee for the upcoming World Hereford Conference. For the past four years, Jen has been a member of the Advisory Group for the Nature Conservancy. It is comprised of the Nature Conservancy Board members and local ranchers who have agreements with the Conservancy. She feels that being a member of the group helps to keep a good working relationship with the Conservancy and keeps everyone apprised of what is going on. The ranchers are helping educate the board members as to what is necessary to care for the land. It is good to have a voice in their management ideas and partner with them in their new fencing and watering techniques.
Jen is also a member of the Waterton Watershed Group. This is a group of community members who have an interest in protecting water quality and riparian/range health. Their goal is to keep a healthy, sustainable watershed that employs environmentally sound land use practices that can be enjoyed by current and future generations. Jen says, “I enjoy meeting with the neighbours and coming home with new ideas. We all face the same challenges, and it’s nice to brainstorm together. We have implemented dead stock bins to keep carnivores out of people’s yards, and we are looking at new styles of grain bins and some electric fencing ideas. More ranchers are becoming aware and proactive about doing things right.” Jen keeps the members informed with an annual newsletter. If you have had any reservations about being a part of the Hereford industry, or have had second thoughts about investing in our youth, introduce yourself to Jen Jenkins. She is an intelligent, positive, organized, self motivated, well spoken and well informed cattleperson who is passionate about Herefords. She can reinforce your dedication immediately. “I have always felt fortunate, because I have never been treated differently because I am a woman,” Jen tells me. “My family, my friends and my neighbours have always included me in everything and allowed me to experience every aspect of ranch life the same as anyone else. I have never been regarded as anything except a rancher!” The vastness and the natural beauty of the Jenkins Ranche is something that must be experienced. When I met Jen on October 8, the mountains were snow capped, the trees were green and golden, tan native grass was waving in the breeze and the pastures were dotted with red/white faces. Water is abundant in natural springs and the Waterton River meandering through the pastures is home for an abundance of brown trout. On any given day you could see deer, elk, wolves, cougars, beaver, black bears or grizzly bears. The area is home to
650 types of vascular plants, 150 species of birds and 45 types of mammals. Recently, Jen has been observing a little black bear that has discovered the grain left in the feeders, and he has even discovered the grain left in the pails in the back of her partner Jeff’s truck. Jen says she likes using her creativity for many things. She was a quilter for a time and a soap maker for a time, but one hobby has stuck with her. She is a phenomenal photographer. She does the photography for their ads, and she carries her camera with her whether she is fencing or working the cattle. The wildlife and scenery she has captured at a moments notice is worthy of publishing. (Check the Jenkins Ranche website to admire her work.) “I would have to say my Dad has been my biggest influence and has always supported my undeniable passion for ranching Herefords,” Jen notes. “My Uncle Tom has also been one of my biggest fans and has taught me so much throughout my life. I have met so many wonderful people along the way that have been my mentors and are my good friends.” Jen has never felt she was unique or newsworthy; ranching is just what she does, and she takes the attention she receives with a grain of salt. October 8 happened to be Jen’s 35th birthday! Her father, Bob, had teased her that morning that she was going to be famous! Apparently, some say that if something great happens on your birthday, great things will continue throughout the year. I wish great things happen for Jen Jenkins in the next year and in the future! Biography: Dr. Colin Palmer is an Associate Professor of Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from Nova Scotia, Dr. Palmer worked in mixed practices in Ontario and British Columbia and has owned/operated a practice in Saskatchewan. Dr. Palmer along with his wife Kim and children Lauren, Emily and Carter run a herd of purebred Red Angus cattle under the KC Cattle Co. name.
Strategies to Maintain Calf Performance The vast majority of us use a single step, hard weaning process – on a given day calves and cows are separated for good. It is well known that there is stress associated with this process and that disease may occur as a result. Many ways of preventing losses associated with weaning have been developed with a focus on either stimulating the immune system or reducing stress. Preconditioning is a rather loose term that can mean different things to different people, but generally implies that all major management procedures have been applied to the calf before leaving the farm of origin, including weaning, castration, dehorning, and vaccinations (including appropriate boosters). Preconditioning programs are not limited to these four items, however, and may also include such things as growth implant administration, concentrate feeding, and application of systemic anti-parasitic products. Any stress has a detrimental effect on the immune system and the more severe the stress or the longer the duration of the stress, the more severe the effect. Weaning is a very stressful event for calves and for most cattle, it is likely the worst thing that will ever happen in their lives. Vaccination at the time of weaning should be avoided, as it is widely believed that the immune system will not respond to the vaccine. The components of a vaccine program vary according to the needs of the herd and can be discussed with your veterinarian. Don’t be afraid to ask how vaccine should be stored, handled and administered. More than one expensive vaccination program has failed due to improper handling of the product. If possible, all vaccination programs including the initial shot and the booster (if recommended by the vaccine manufacturer), should be completed at least 2 to 4 weeks before weaning. Since many of us are on the Canadian Angus Performance Program and need to have our weaning weights submitted by the second week in October, it is very practical for us to complete our pre-weaning vaccinations on the weigh date and to wean sometime later. Vaccinations are really only part of a good preconditioning program and are not a substitute for sound management. You should consider the needs of the calf the same as you would a guest in your home – you will want them to be as comfortable as possible, so you will show them where the food, drink and other amenities are. What has worked well on our farm is to start feeding good quality hay to the
calves for about a week, while they are still with the cows and in the same pen that they will be weaned into. We also provide bedding and creep feeding in that same pen. Once we notice that the calves are eating well and using the water bowl (usually about 3 to 4 days), we will quietly sort the cows out and lock the calves in.The calves are allowed contact with their mothers along a board fence line and share a water bowl. It is not uncommon to see cows licking their calves over the fence and we believe that this eases the weaning process. Dusty or wet pens should always be avoided, as they may facilitate disease and never wean into pens that you may later use as calving pens, as stressed weanlings shed coccidian parasites in their manure which can survive in the soil over winter to infect young calves and cause bloody diarrhea the following spring. Antibiotics should not be part of your weaning program except for treating the occasional calf that is obviously sick. Antibiotics target bacteria and do nothing for the immune system or the animal’s stress level. Although antibiotics are commonly administered to high risk calves, or perhaps every calf depending on the policy of the calf purchasers, they are really unnecessary if calves are properly preconditioned. An alternative to hard weaning is to use a QuietWean nose-flap.The nose-flap can be placed on the calf’s nose to prevent suckling while allowing the calf to remain with its mother. The flaps are left in place for 4 to 7 days and effectively reduce the bond between mother and calf. At the time of nose-flap removal, calves may be separated from the cows permanently but with a 95% reduction in bawling and a 25% increase in time spent eating, compared to calves being completely separated from their dams in a single step. An added benefit is that calves can be put back out on their own pasture with very little fence-crawling. A number of producers swear by the two-step QuietWean program and after a single season, say that they would never go back to their old way even if it means putting the calves through the chute twice. If you are interested in this system, just look up QuietWean on the internet. Good luck and may your weaning be as smooth as possible. The quicker you can get those calves settled in, the better they will perform!

By Chris Poley In the “real world,” there are fewer cows everywhere, as we continue to loose commercial and purebred breeders alike. I believe this trend will continue in the short term, as we loose older producers and those whose hearts are not really in it. For many, there is an appeal to rip up the grassland and plant a crop that will give them a large and quick return. Not to mention the appeal of shutting down the combine, trading their lined chore clothes for golf shorts and heading south for the winter.
The world’s appetite for ethanol is driving this trend. Not only in Canada and the United States, but also in countries like Brazil, where they too, are taking land out of grass production. Land that produced cheap, grass fed beef, which we could not compete with on a price level in the world market. Now, much of that land is growing corn for fuel.
What does this mean for those who plan to stay in the beef industry? Whether it is because of passion or that there is no alternative as the land that you own is not suited for crop production. It means you are in for better times, better than you have ever dreamed of! The world population continues to grow and the appetite for beef grows at an even faster pace. In the past, most Asian people lived on a diet base of rice and vegetables. Perhaps not because that is what they loved, but it is what they had access to and what they could afford. However, as the middle class of Asian society is becoming more and more affluent, they are discovering the real taste for beef.
We are on the tip of world beef shortages and Canadians still have access to cheaper land on which to produce beef and feed grains. In Canada, our beef production will easily increase as demands and profits continue to justify expansion. For our world competitors, the story is not the same. More specifically, the countries that produce grass fed beef. Their production has been maxed out on their available grassland. Their only
alternative to increase production is to feedlot cattle, which will mean taking more acres out of grass in order to grow feed or they will need to import their feed grains. Either way, their days of flooding the market with cheap, lower quality, grass fed beef are numbered.
Be proud of being a beef producer and take comfort in the fact that markets are reflecting low supplies and putting some profit back into the balance sheets. Canadian beef producers will soon be in an envious agricultural position... just as they were eight years ago!
For those of you in the purebred business, now is the time to follow up on your bull customers. As breeding season comes to an end, check on the performance of the bulls you sold. If there is an issue, deal with it before it becomes a bigger problem. If you follow up, you will find that the cull rate of bulls (post breeding) is higher than many auction markets have ever seen. With cull bulls selling for eighty plus cents per pound, the old bulls, the limping bulls, the sore eyed bulls, the bulls with injured connecting rods and the “just not liked” bulls are going to town. I have visited with several cowboys and they’ve said, “Why would I spend money treating him, when I can get that kind of salvage and not worry about reoccurrence next year”? So follow up with some customer service, as most of them will be looking to be your customer again next spring. It’s up to you to keep them as your customers.

Walter (Walt) Harry Browarny November 28, 1935 – August 24, 2011 It is with deep sorrow the family of Walter Browarny announces his passing on August 24, 2011. Walter was born to Harry and Josephine Browarny on November 28, 1935 in Calgary, Alberta. Walter and Marie were married in May, 1958 and with the birth of daughter, Shannon and son Allan, Walter’s circle of family and love was complete. Walter’s work with Imperial Oil would become a 14 year career, until 1967 when Walter decided to become a livestock photographer. In 1970 Browarny Photographics was formed and Walter traveled all over the world photographing livestock. Walter loved his work and he was fully dedicated to giving his clients the very best of his talents. Walter was a true artist and could see the beauty in all nature and all creatures. Grandson Corbin in 1998 and granddaughter Sophia in 2008 were welcomed into Walters life. The grandchildren were a joy to Walter and they brought a new purpose to his life. Walter was a devoted family man and he cherished the time he shared with them.
Anthony Nicholas Lischka “Tony”, was born on a farm northwest of Steelman in 1917 and passed away on September 19, 2011. A legendary Polled Hereford and dairy producer in the province of Saskatchewan, Tony developed a broad and diverse farming operation, becoming a major success within the livestock industry throughout the world; the ANL prefix continues to progress and thrive under the capable hands of his son Karl and daughter-in-law Karen. When not involved with the family farm, Tony provided financial counseling for troubled farmers during the ‘80’s; was an active community member working on the school board, with the Knights of Columbus and took great pride in his membership on the church board, where he served for many years. He was a founding shareholder in the Weyburn Inland Terminal, and an inaugural director of Canadian Western Agribition. Although farming was his work, his passion was his family and faith. Lovingly remembered by his wife Anne of sixty four years, by his seven children, eighteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren, his memory will live on, not only with his family, but by all, whose lives he touched.
James E. Hayes Passed away suddenly at Royal Victoria Hospital, Barrie, Ontario on Monday, September 5th, 2011; only son of the late Elbert and Eleanor Hayes. Best friend of Linda Copeland and loved by many family members and friends. The cattle industry was James’ life and he was a very important part of the lives and successes of many cattle friends. He travelled to hundreds of shows and sales throughout North America fitting cattle of all beef breeds.
He especially wanted to help young people get a start in the business as he had through the 4-H program and he gave back to that program, by helping others.
