The bone wrenching, extreme cold weather over the past several months has made house wives dream of sand and surf, while their spouses and partners deal with frozen water bowls. Having been spoiled for the past several years, the climate this year makes us stop and realize the basic needs provided by the use of Hereford influence...something that is taken for granted by those who enjoy the luxury of Herefordinfluence, but which has been forgotten by most.

The Hereford breed, mostly polled, has enjoyed a very proud and successful year. For the most part, sales were strong, with many equalling or exceeding the totals of the year previous and culminating with record prices at the Agribition Sale in late November. At the National Western Stock Show in Denver this year, the Hereford breed stood tall with record attendance, record sale and exhibitor participation....congratulations to the American Hereford Association and its breeders!

Two weeks later at the Fort Worth Stock Show, Canadians established another milestone capturing the Miss World Champion Polled Hereford Female. Harvie Farms, Olds, Alberta and RSK Farms, Brandon, Manitoba had a very successful fall campaign with RVP 51X Ablaze 7A who captured Canadian Western Agribition and later a top ten finalist in the RBC Supreme....congratulations to the Harvie family and the Kopechuks for making all Canadians proud!

I Just Thought You Ought To Know...

Bull Warranty; What should be expected?

As most readers know, I am a theriogenologist (clinical specialist in animal reproduction) working at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon. A large percentage of my clinical work involves bull fertility, semen evaluation and bull breeding issues and I receive a number of referral cases and over- the- phone referral consultations each year. Having a seed stock operation of my own has certainly enhanced my knowledge and enlightened my perspective especially when dealing with fertility issues in recently purchased animals.

As a professional, I have a responsibility to my client, but I also must maintain a fair and impartial view when issues related to warranty arise. A good rule of thumb is “don’t make comments that can’t be supported.” I am especially passionate when it comes to the question of heritability. An unsubstantiated claim that a breeding related problem is heritable can severely damage a seed stock producer’s reputation and undoubtedly put him or her in a difficult position when trying to make it right.

Offering warranty or a breeder’s guarantee is a wellaccepted practice in the breeding bull business. With increasing competition and the push to be rewarded well for their efforts, seed stock operations that offer more usually have the best bull sales with a high proportion of their bulls going to repeat buyers.

From what I have seen, the warranties provided by beef seed stock producers are arguably the most generous in the agricultural sector. So why mess with a good thing?

I will apologize in advance if this article upsets you.

My intent is to generate discussion rather than to create enemies. Here are some of my questions: I wonder if there is too much warranty nowadays?

What should be reasonably expected of a bull supplier? What about the breeding soundness evaluations – are they being interpreted correctly?

Should we insist that bull buyers be held more accountable?

Personally, I think that too much is being given away under the guise of customer service. Metaphorically speaking, in a number of cases, valuable equipment is being improperly used, maintained and stored with the expectation that it can be replaced at full value and at no extra cost. Most if not all bull sales I have been to spell out the terms of their guarantee and have insurance agents available offering a full spectrum of policies from life and injury to future fertility including loss of use clauses. I see many seedstock operations carefully tweaking the terms of their guarantees to ensure that they treat their buyers fairly while avoiding the pitfall of giving away bulls for free. A very innovative seed stock operation has created its own tiered insurance program that is coupled with their breeders guarantee. Details of the guarantee are spelled out clearly and precisely and buyers must decide what level of protection they are comfortable with. Initial impressions are that it was well-received by the bull buyers and a source has told me that it has worked as well, or perhaps even better than expected. I would like to encourage all bull

The Hereford breed has survived for a century plus, simply because of hair with an undercoat and a thick hide; a cow who forages and rustles amid the frozen hills and valleys maintaining body condition, while her counterparts stand at the corral gate waiting for nourishment. Since the mode of raising beef cattle and ranching has changed, fall and winter grazing have become common place in the same manner as decades prior in the grasslands of south Western Canada. No doubt, the fact that there are fewer young people staying on the ranch and Mom and Pop having the same or larger work load, it has become an economic benefit to calve on grass and simply sell calves a little later. But winter grazing demands a hardy creature that will use its given traits to get the job done!

sellers to move to a more detailed warranty program and suggest that they put more responsibility on the buyers to purchase insurance.

I am a fervent believer in the value of bull breeding soundness evaluations. There is no better way to identify infertile and subfertile bulls, but beyond that the semen test, as it is more commonly known, has become as, if not more, expected than the transfer of registration papers in the bull business. One thing that must be kept in mind, however, is that semen tests most accurately represent the status of sperm production on the day of the exam. In other words, if there is an injury, illness or any sort of significant stress that occurs subsequent to the exam the effect on the sperm picture could be enough to affect breeding performance. A new environment, a drastic change in feed quality, being placed in a pen with older bulls are just a few examples of stressors. In my opinion, any failed breeding soundness evaluation within 6 months of the initial presale evaluation should be assessed in conjunction with the original, pre-sale examination including an independent assessment of both semen smears. In most cases, if the bull received a satisfactory classification on the first evaluation, and that classification was correct, then a subsequent questionable (decision deferred) or unsatisfactory classification is not the fault of the breeder. Some defects, for example diadem vacuoles and knobbed acrosomes, should be monitored for up to 6 months as some individuals may be prone to expressing these defects. Clauses regarding replacement of the affected bull for that period of time need to be included. Be careful when followup examinations are conducted. I have data that shows that 25% fewer bulls had satisfactory semen quality in January verses July. More bulls will pass a breeding soundness evaluation in June and July than in December, January, February and March.

The ability to mount and complete service is not evaluated during a standard breeding soundness evaluation and the onus is put on the bull owner to observe breeding behavior. Breeding related concerns should be conveyed to the breeder within 6 weeks (2 estrus cycles) of turnout. Bulls should always be observed frequently during the breeding season; in well-managed herds most of the cows should be cycling at turnout, therefore, cow fertility will be less likely to confound the issue. In other words, maybe the bull is not the problem or he is only part of the problem. Furthermore, if a problem is evident a replacement bull can be put in quickly before the entire breeding season is lost. Breeding related and musculoskeletal injuries are also not the responsibility of the breeder. Issues surrounding temperament, sex drive, aggressiveness towards other bulls are often the most difficult to resolve and probably should be handled on a case by case basis, but again within say 6 months of purchase.

In closing, I have been pleased with how efficiently and professionally most bull warranty issues are resolved. When dealing with a biological unit like a bull no one is able to predict with certainty how his breeding career is going to unfold.

You Ought to Know...

Mother Nature has again proven why there are different breeds of cattle in the beef industry. The bone wrenching, extreme cold weather over the past several months has made house wives dream of sand and surf, while their spouses and partners deal with frozen water bowls. Having been spoiled for the past several years, the climate this year makes us stop and realize the basic needs provided by the use of Hereford influence...something that is taken for granted by those who enjoy the luxury of Herefordinfluence, but which has been forgotten by most.

The Hereford breed has survived for a century plus, simply because of hair with an undercoat and a thick hide; a cow who forages and rustles amid the frozen hills and valleys maintaining body condition, while her counterparts stand at the corral gate waiting for nourishment. Since the mode of raising beef cattle and ranching has changed, fall and winter grazing have become common place in the same manner as decades prior in the grasslands of south Western Canada. No doubt, the fact that there are fewer young people staying on the ranch and Mom and Pop having the same or larger work load, it has become an economic benefit to calve on grass and simply sell calves a little later. But winter grazing demands a hardy creature that will use its given traits to get the job done!

The Hereford breed, mostly polled, has enjoyed a very proud and successful year. For the most part, sales were strong, with many equalling or exceeding the totals of the year previous and culminating with record prices at the Agribition Sale in late November. At the National Western Stock Show in Denver this year, the Hereford breed stood tall with record attendance, record sale and exhibitor participation....congratulations to the American Hereford Association and its breeders!

Two weeks later at the Fort Worth Stock Show, Canadians established another milestone capturing the Miss World Champion Polled Hereford Female. Harvie Farms, Olds, Alberta and RSK Farms, Brandon, Manitoba had a very successful fall campaign with RVP 51X Ablaze 7A who captured Canadian Western Agribition and later a top ten finalist in the RBC Supreme....congratulations to the Harvie family and the Kopechuks for making all Canadians proud!

Bull Warranty; What should be expected?

Biography: Dr. Colin Palmer is an Associate Professor of Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from Nova Scotia, Dr. Palmer worked in mixed practices in Ontario and British Columbia and has owned/operated a practice in Saskatchewan. Dr. Palmer along with his wife Kim and children Lauren, Emily and Carter run a herd of purebred Red Angus cattle under the KC Cattle Co. name.

As most readers know, I am a theriogenologist (clinical specialist in animal reproduction) working at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon. A large percentage of my clinical work involves bull fertility, semen evaluation and bull breeding issues and I receive a number of referral cases and over- the- phone referral consultations each year. Having a seed stock operation of my own has certainly enhanced my knowledge and enlightened my perspective especially when dealing with fertility issues in recently purchased animals.

As a professional, I have a responsibility to my client, but I also must maintain a fair and impartial view when issues related to warranty arise. A good rule of thumb is “don’t make comments that can’t be supported.” I am especially passionate when it comes to the question of heritability. An unsubstantiated claim that a breeding related problem is heritable can severely damage a seed stock producer’s reputation and undoubtedly put him or her in a difficult position when trying to make it right.

Offering warranty or a breeder’s guarantee is a wellaccepted practice in the breeding bull business. With increasing competition and the push to be rewarded well for their efforts, seed stock operations that offer more usually have the best bull sales with a high proportion of their bulls going to repeat buyers.

From what I have seen, the warranties provided by beef seed stock producers are arguably the most generous in the agricultural sector. So why mess with a good thing?

I will apologize in advance if this article upsets you.

My intent is to generate discussion rather than to create enemies. Here are some of my questions: I wonder if there is too much warranty nowadays?

What should be reasonably expected of a bull supplier? What about the breeding soundness evaluations – are they being interpreted correctly?

Should we insist that bull buyers be held more accountable?

Personally, I think that too much is being given away under the guise of customer service. Metaphorically speaking, in a number of cases, valuable equipment is being improperly used, maintained and stored with the expectation that it can be replaced at full value and at no extra cost. Most if not all bull sales I have been to spell out the terms of their guarantee and have insurance agents available offering a full spectrum of policies from life and injury to future fertility including loss of use clauses. I see many seedstock operations carefully tweaking the terms of their guarantees to ensure that they treat their buyers fairly while avoiding the pitfall of giving away bulls for free. A very innovative seed stock operation has created its own tiered insurance program that is coupled with their breeders guarantee. Details of the guarantee are spelled out clearly and precisely and buyers must decide what level of protection they are comfortable with. Initial impressions are that it was well-received by the bull buyers and a source has told me that it has worked as well, or perhaps even better than expected. I would like to encourage all bull

sellers to move to a more detailed warranty program and suggest that they put more responsibility on the buyers to purchase insurance.

I am a fervent believer in the value of bull breeding soundness evaluations. There is no better way to identify infertile and subfertile bulls, but beyond that the semen test, as it is more commonly known, has become as, if not more, expected than the transfer of registration papers in the bull business. One thing that must be kept in mind, however, is that semen tests most accurately represent the status of sperm production on the day of the exam. In other words, if there is an injury, illness or any sort of significant stress that occurs subsequent to the exam the effect on the sperm picture could be enough to affect breeding performance. A new environment, a drastic change in feed quality, being placed in a pen with older bulls are just a few examples of stressors. In my opinion, any failed breeding soundness evaluation within 6 months of the initial presale evaluation should be assessed in conjunction with the original, pre-sale examination including an independent assessment of both semen smears. In most cases, if the bull received a satisfactory classification on the first evaluation, and that classification was correct, then a subsequent questionable (decision deferred) or unsatisfactory classification is not the fault of the breeder. Some defects, for example diadem vacuoles and knobbed acrosomes, should be monitored for up to 6 months as some individuals may be prone to expressing these defects. Clauses regarding replacement of the affected bull for that period of time need to be included. Be careful when followup examinations are conducted. I have data that shows that 25% fewer bulls had satisfactory semen quality in January verses July. More bulls will pass a breeding soundness evaluation in June and July than in December, January, February and March.

The ability to mount and complete service is not evaluated during a standard breeding soundness evaluation and the onus is put on the bull owner to observe breeding behavior. Breeding related concerns should be conveyed to the breeder within 6 weeks (2 estrus cycles) of turnout. Bulls should always be observed frequently during the breeding season; in well-managed herds most of the cows should be cycling at turnout, therefore, cow fertility will be less likely to confound the issue. In other words, maybe the bull is not the problem or he is only part of the problem. Furthermore, if a problem is evident a replacement bull can be put in quickly before the entire breeding season is lost. Breeding related and musculoskeletal injuries are also not the responsibility of the breeder. Issues surrounding temperament, sex drive, aggressiveness towards other bulls are often the most difficult to resolve and probably should be handled on a case by case basis, but again within say 6 months of purchase.

In closing, I have been pleased with how efficiently and professionally most bull warranty issues are resolved. When dealing with a biological unit like a bull no one is able to predict with certainty how his breeding career is going to unfold.

Canadian Western Agribition Scholarship awards $2,500 to students with a history of involvement in CWA as exhibitors, volunteers, or competitors pursing post-secondary education.

Cassandra Gorrill (Lindsay, ON) - Cassandra is in her fourth year at the University of Guelph, majoring in Animal Science. She raises purebred Herefords on her family farm, Cedarwood Polled Herefords.

She won the 2015 National 4-H and Youth Judging Competition at CWA and the honour to judge the First Lady Classic.

Morgan Heidecker (Middle Lake, SK) - Morgan is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness at the University of Saskatchewan. She grew up on Triple H Farm raising registered Polled Herefords, and was a member of the Three Lakes 4-H Beef Club.

From Bonanza Champion Harvie Ranching was founded in 1977 when Ian and Marlene purchased a ranch west of Olds, Alberta near Marlene’s parents place, Remitall. Ian came from a commercial operation near Priddis, Alberta and his first purebred Hereford came from Bar Pipe purchased in 1968, which was a gift from his mother. Shortly after they moved to the farm they started their family of four boys Eric, Scott, Cole and Will. The base herd was purchased from Remitall and Joseph Gerchan.

For the first ten years Harvie Ranching solely raised Herefords, and in 1987 they added Charolais. Combined, the herd was at 100 head and then through the 90’s it slowly increased to 200 cows. Cole graduated from Dodge City Kansas on a judging scholarship and Scott was an Agriculture Production graduate from Olds College. When Scott and Cole finished college and came back to the operation and the ranch decided to expand, doubling the land base and began calving over 300 cows. In 2008, Simmentals were the third breed added to the operation. The reason for the third breed was to diversify of breed options and increase the bull sale average.

Before Cole and Scott came back to the ranch, a neighbor did the AI’ing so only a couple cows a year were artificially inseminated each year and there was very little embryo work done. Now, almost every female is AI’ed before she is put with

a bull on the next potential cycle. On the embryo side, we are flushing around 20 to 30 cows per year, implanting around a 100 embryos and selling 150 embryos per year.

Harvie Ranching genetics are marketed and sold globally and have produced National and World Champion progeny.

Harvie Ranching was the first sale to be broadcasted by LiveAuctions.tv in Canada. We now host two sales a year and consign to several sales in the fall. Our bull sale is the second Tuesday of March and a Hereford female and embryo sale is hosted in October.

Harvie Ranching continues to expand; Cole married Jill McNeely from Ontario, and the two of them met at Bonanza in PEI and now have two daughters, Tinley and Lyla are starting to show cattle, too. Scott married Kerrie Bennett from Calgary who showed cattle with her cousins growing up. They have two children, Chick and Gentry and are expecting their third in June. Will lives in Edmonton and sells corporate real estate and helps out on the farm when he can, he plans to marry Steph Maile in August 2017 at the ranch.

This family run and owned operation has always depended on the Hereford breed for various reasons. Those reasons are; docility, efficiency, marketability and notably Herefords have a local and global marketing appeal.

Some of the most notable achievements include the 2013 Canadian Junior National Champion Female with RSK 6U Miss Sage 64Y, who is now a donor for HMS Hi-Cliffe and RSK. Also the 2016 Canadian Junior National Champion Female with RVP 51X Ablaze 7A, also a donor for Harvie Ranching and RSK, who went on to be undefeated at the Olds Fall Classic, Farm Fair and CWA. We were also very excited to have Ablaze be named the 2017 Herefordbreeder.net Champion of the World.

Feed efficiency and docility are two very important traits which we look for in our Hereford cattle. Good structure, muscling, carcass and pigment are also sought-after traits.

At the end of the day...the cattle must be functional and marketable. The purebred Herefords start calving in January and calves are weaned by the end of September. The cows are wintered on hay only.

Our Mission

RSK Farms is a family-run mixed farm which began operation in 1984. We are located approximately 14 kilometers east of Brandon, Manitoba, Canada along the Trans-Canada Highway. The breeding operation consists of about 75 registered Hereford females and 75 commercial Hereford-Angus females that are usually bred to Hereford or Simmental bulls. The rest of the farm consists of 6.5 sections of both owned and rented crop land, hay fields and pastureland.

The farm uses AI and ET technology to acquire desirable traits and improve genetic response through predictability and repeatability over large numbers of progeny. RSK is enrolled in the THE (Total Herd Evaluation) program and uses GE-EPD’s. We also collect carcass data on all registered animals through CUP ultrasounding. This data collection is just a tool that assists us in evaluating our livestock.

The herdsire RSK 707B Harrison 24H had a great deal of influence within our herd when we started, breeding strong replacement females that still trace back today. More recently, we have used some popular AI sires like Victor 719T, Hometown 10Y, Playmaker 14Z and Full Bottle H117 our Australian outcross sire. We have been walking Harlen 199B, RSK Digby ET 20C, Titlist 13C and have just recently purchased KJ BJ 719Z Truman 695D ET, a R Leader son from Jensen Bros. Every one of these sires serves a purpose in our herd and will see extensive use in our ET program.

Family

Every family member is involved in the farm and has a role to play. Rae and Stephanie are very involved in the day to day operations and extremely active on the farm, as well as managing the crop production and book keeping. They are the glue that holds the operation together. Andrew is employed full time with Agriculture Canada, and assists with managing the breeding, sale and show aspects of the livestock. Stephen, with his wife Lindsay and son Mack, assist with managing the grain production side and day to day operations of RSK. Sarah and her husband Chris reside at Rocky Lake, MB and are always around to help out. Like our mission statement says, we embrace a strong family devotion to farming.

Genetics from RSK Farms have been consigned to many sales over the past years and can be found throughout North America and the Globe. RSK Farms is proud to co-host two sales every year; the Elite Genetics Bull Sale in March and the Elite Genetics Production Sale in October, which features our best females.

Dentures, Pheasants, and Dogs named Mike Shorty wheeled the old Ford pick up to the front of a neatly kept white house. The truck slid to a stop on the frozen road and Shorty tapped the horn.

Shorty watched the house door swing open and out stepped Donnie. Shorty was helping his Dad out, his parents and the younger siblings were off on a vacation, and Shorty had taken over on his Dad’s ranch while they were away.

Donnie was his Dad’s right hand man. He was older than Shorty’s Dad, a slight man with a weathered face and wispy, thin grey hair that was tucked under a felt cowboy hat. His eyes were watery and bright blue. Shorty had never seen Donnie when his eyes weren’t watery, nor had he ever seen him without the hat and without a long-sleeved shirt.

Donnie slid into the passenger seat of the ranch rocket and glanced over at Shorty.

“Holy Shorty, it sure is cold.”

“Morning Donnie. Sure is.”

“Did the feed truck start?”

“Yup.” “You see the dog this mornin’?”

“Yeah, he’s in the barn.”

Donnie nodded and reached into his pocket and pulled out his tobacco and papers. While Shorty drove, Donnie rolled a cigarette, stuck it in his mouth and lit it with a wooden match.

He took the smoke out of his mouth, opened the glove box, pulled his false teeth out of his mouth, and tossed them into the glove box... just as he did every morning. At lunch time, Donnie would retrieve the dentures, wash them off in the horse trough, and pop them back into his mouth. Shorty figured that if the roll your own cigarettes didn’t kill Donnie, a few mouse turds and some horse snot probably wouldn’t hurt.

The two men pulled up to the barn and swapped up the half ton for a three-ton ex-army 4 X 4 flat deck loaded with small square bales. This time Donnie was the pilot and Shorty was the passenger and subsequently the bale feeder. They drove the couple of miles to the feed ground and fed off the load to the herd.

Once the cattle had been fed, they returned to the barn and once again swapped vehicles. Donnie disappeared into the barn, returning with his dog. Donnie and the dog leaped into the pick up. The dog was a homely looking cross breed, with watery eyes. The dog, Mike, sat in the middle, while Donnie cracked the window and lit up another cigarette.

“We gonna check them cows?” Donnie looked over at his driver.

“Yup,” Shorty wheeled the pick up out of the yard and back towards the feed grounds. The truck lurched along the trail left by the larger truck and with every sudden movement, Donnie would giggle and Mike would look disgustingly at Shorty.

The truck rounded a corner near a patch of bush and there, beside the road was a group of pheasants. They were picking at the ground where Shorty and Donnie had fed the cows a couple of days before. Shorty slowed and pulled the truck to the left to avoid the birds.

The truck was well past the pheasants when Donnie broke the silence.

“Ya know Shorty…. I’ve been thinking.” Both Shorty and Mike looked over at Donnie. He was silent.

“What’s that Donnie?”

“I was thinking that maybe we should go back to the barn after we are done here, and get some grain for them pheasants.”

Donnie looked over at Shorty.

“That’s a good idea Donnie, it is pretty cold.”

Donnie nodded, but said nothing. It was several minutes later when Donnie broke the silence.

“Shorty, I’ve been thinking.”

Shorty looked over at his partner. He was staring straight ahead. Mike looked over at Shorty.

“What’s that Donnie?”

“I’ve been thinking. Why should I do anything for the pheasants, they’ve never done nothing for me.”

Mike looked over at his boss and appeared to Shorty as though Mike slumped forward. Donnie laughed, reached over, and rubbed the dog’s head.

“Donnie, this is at least the fourth dog you have had named Mike. How come you call them all Mike?”

“I dunno. I never really thought much about it, the dog’s name was always Mike. I just never got used to calling my dog anything else. This way I never had to remember a new name.”

Mike was staring at Donnie, like it was the first time he had heard the story.

He was over the embarrassment of the fart, now he looked as though he was hurt, it never occurred to him there was more than one Mike.

“He thinks he is the only Mike.” Donnie was smiling now.

“Sorry Mike. I think I will name my next dog after you… I will call him Mike.”

Mike wagged his tail, and laid his head on Donnie’s lap.

Donnie grinned and looked at Shorty.

“Mike is a good name for a dog, huh Shorty?”

Mike nodded his approval.

“You bet Donnie.”

“I guess so Donnie.” Shorty was not too sure how to answer that, he couldn’t argue with the logic.

Shorty never regretted any time that he ever spent with Donnie.

He learned more about being a cowboy, about training dogs and about being a good person from Donnie than anyone else in his life. Shorty never did smoke, and he has his own teeth, but he does have a dog… a dog named Mike.

It was Donnie who broke the silence. Apparently, the ventilation in the truck was such that the air flow was from the driver’s side to the open window on the passenger side.

“Geez Mike…did you fart?”

Grant Rolston was born and raised in ranching country near Penticton, British Columbia. After graduating school, he worked on a purebred Hereford ranch, then assumed a position at Western Breeders Artificial Insemination Unit. In 1980, he left the livestock scene and joined the Edmonton Police Department, where he received his formal training in photography, working for the IDENT unit (crime scene investigation). After a decade, he returned to the industry, purchasing a herd of purebred Angus cattle but both Grant and his wife, Lauralee, worked off the ranch to make a living. He chose livestock photography and is now Canada’s premier livestock photographer of beef cattle. Grant and Lauralee travel throughout nine provinces in Canada for on farm photography, in addition to all major livestock shows, including the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, the Canadian Western Agribition, and all major National Junior shows in the summer months. Grant and Lauralee Rolston reside in Vulcan, Alberta. With four decades of experience, Grant shares things that are “Not Taken for Granted.”

As we say goodbye to 2016, many will say good riddance. 2016 really wasn’t a bad year, just one filled with challenges. The year started off with a sliding cattle market, slipping off unimaginable highs in the fall of 2015. The winter was quite easy, with very little snow which fuelled concerns of continuing drought.

However in the west, as late spring and early summer arrived drought was the last thing on people’s minds as it began to rain making for the longest haying season ever, which ran into harvest. Harvest was another story, with a wet October many did not turn a wheel during the whole month. It was the most challenging month of the year, soggy crops (many of which were huge), the softest calf prices of the year and just no damn sunshine, challenged people to stay positive.

Luckily November was a beautiful month, with record temperatures which saw most of the crop off and a rallying cattle market that continued right until Christmas. The East did see dryer conditions than many had seen before, leaving hay supplies and grain crops lighter than normal, if it was not for some late summer moisture, it could have been real tough on beef producers. Most managed to gather up enough feed and the late rally in prices gave them the boost they needed to stick with it.

As we look to 2017, there is a great deal to be excited about, a bit stronger and more importantly a more stable cattle market and enough moisture to get things 44

off to a good start in the spring. Beef is still the meat of choice for most people; it is definitely the choice when dining out or entertaining.

I recently read some articles written on beef consumption.

Two things continue to stand out from these studies conducted throughout the world...beef is the meat of choice and Canadian beef is considered to be of the highest quality, safest and most sustainably produced around the world. This is something that every one reading this already knows, but do your friends and relatives in the city know? We all need to continue to share the word in any way we can and look to our industry leaders to do so at a global level for us. If we are able to do this successfully, demand should continue to stay ahead of supply. We all know part of the reason is that it tastes so good, is so wholesome for us and that it cannot be mass produced or factory farmed. It takes grass root people such as yourselves to breed and calve these animals in co-operation with Mother Nature.

With family and friends surrounding him, Gilbert J. Henderson of Onondaga Farms, St. George, ON passed away at the Brantford General Hospital. In his 91st year, the beloved husband of the late Molly Henderson. He will be sadly missed by his sister Margaret Watson (Doug) of Innisfail, AB, his brother George Henderson of Texas, sister-in-law Alice Bennett (Fred) of Woodstock, ON and many nieces and nephews. Gil’s family would like to thank Dr. Jeff Manning for his care over the years, his caregivers of the last near decade, and special thanks to Jen (Bubbles) who went above and beyond.

A celebration of life will be held April 22, 2017 from 1:00 – 4:00 pm at the Tim Horton’s Children’s Camp in St. George, ON. Cremation has taken place and in lieu of flowers, donations are greatly appreciated and can be made to the Time Horton’s Children Foundation, www.dennistoll.ca.

Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup 10th Anniversary Event

August 4, 5, and 6 will be the Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup 10th annual event in Neepawa, Manitoba. This exciting threeday event will bring together junior members, 4-Hers, and enthusiasts from all across the province.

The show is organized by representatives from various breeds that have been involved with National and Provincial shows in the past. Our goal is to prepare young entrepreneurs in the livestock industry, through this exciting showcase of youth, cattle and friendly competition. This event will educate, encourage, stimulate and unite participants in the business of agriculture and the beef industry. It encompasses a variety of competitions and events to match all interests and skill levels of participants. Some of the events are Team Grooming, Individual and Team Judging, Showmanship, Marketing, Sales Talk, Impromptu Speeches, Art, Photography, Scrap booking, as well as cattle classes.

This will be a celebration and showcase of Manitoba Yyouth and agriculture in our province. We encourage young and old to stay involved in the agriculture industry, explore career opportunities, increase national trade and awareness, and be proud to be part of one of Canada’s largest industries. We feel the celebration of our past shows exemplifies the importance of youth and agriculture, and will strive to present innovative opportunities that promote and educate future cattleman dedicated to the cattle industry.

NEW IN 2017 for the 10th Anniversary- Low Stress Cattle Handling Workshop , Cattle Presentation Workshops, Advocacy Workshop, and Invitations for 4-H Champion Females from each 2017 Club Achievement to attend Roundup, with entry fee paid by Roundup. Along with Ag Challenge competitions, Cook-off, cattle shows, scholarships and selection of the Canadian Western Agribition Team.

Roundup is being undertaken as an all breeds show to bring young purebred and commercial cattle producers from across the province to see friendly competition amongst the new and upcoming producers from within Manitoba. MANITOBA ROUNDUP TEAM MEMBER EXCELLS AT AGRIBITION Samantha Rimke of Oak Lake, Manitoba earned the 4th overall top judge award at the Canadian National 4-H and Youth Judging competition at Canadian Western Agribition in Regina Saskatchewan in November. Samantha was awarded a cash prize along with a belt buckle. Adam Harms of Cartwright was also a member of the Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup team. Canadian National 4H & Youth Judging Competition helps develop the skills of our young agriculture judges, judging various species of livestock and forages. The competitors have the opportunity to attend and view one of the world’s largest international agricultural marketplaces at Agribition.

Each year, Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup selects the members to represent their team at Agribition at their annual Junior weekend for all Junior cattle enthusiasts under the age of 25 years of age. 10th annual Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup will be held August 4-6, 2017 in Neepawa, Manitoba. There have been a number of articles written over the years on the value of calves receiving adequate amounts of good quality colostrum.

With that, colostrum substitutes have also come into greater usage.

Several components have led to this change. The colostrum substitutes have become of higher quality, and are more convenient than using frozen colostrum. With less cows needing help during calving, and more producers calving later on grass, heavy producing cows are not around to save colostrum from. It was always considered best to have colostrum from your own cows, which are on your nutritional and vaccination program.

The spray-dried colostrum we get from the Saskatoon Colostrum Company with such names as Headstart and Calf’s Choice Total, are pasteurized in the spray dry process, mainly to insure diseases such as Johne’s are not passed on. All batches are also tested in calves as well as in the lab before being released on the market. All the other products sold in Canada are imported from the US. These other companies take out some of the fat, some of the antimicrobial as well as immune factors. There is a large market for these other factors in the human health supplement field. Our local company here in Western Canada does not do that, so all the more reason to shop locally. The heat treatment makes this commercial supplement safer than getting colostrum from say a dairy, where you don’t know the health status. There is nothing wrong with getting colostrum from the first milk of a productive cow in your herd and freezing it for another day. Hopefully she doesn’t have John’s disease, and when you collect the colostrum do it carefully to prevent any manure contamination.

Use it that current year or hold over till you can secure more the next year if it goes unused. I find with today’s busy farmers and the reasons previously mentioned, colostrum is not as convenient to get anymore. You can easily save lots of time by being able to rehydrate the colostrum replacers quickly in warm water versus thawing out the frozen colostrum carefully. One of the keys for you as a producer to use them is recognizing how many grams of immunoglobulins are in the product. We have always preached at least 100 grams of immunoglobulin into the calf before ideally 4-6 hours of age.

If using a product such as Headstart (60g IgG) it is critical that the calf receive extra colostrum from the cow as this product is designed to be fed as an immediate feeding, and the calf should still be encouraged to suckle the cow in the first few hours of life. The Calf’s Choice Total provides the 100g IgG. These products may seem expensive, but the old adage “you get what you pay for” holds true. The better quality colostrum supplements i.e. those with higher levels of immunoglobulins, are generally more expensive. Beware of the very cheap colostrum supplements, or should I say those touting themselves

as a colostrum substitute. I have often used the example of colostrix boluses touted as a colostrum source years ago. Each bolus contained 0.3 grams of immunoglobulins meaning in order to get the full 100 grams, the dose would be 300 boluses. Somehow I don’t think that was ever done. Inexpensive colostrum sources may also not absorb as well into the calf as they have a lower % IgG compared to the high quality, complete colostrum product. Look at the label. The first and only ingredient should be colostrum. Buy the good substitutes, store them well and follow the mixing directions closely.

I think more producers can also think of using colostrum supplements more as partial substitutes. An example of this is twins from an average cow, where both calves have sucked somewhat, splitting a 100-gram package between the two calves insures they both have had enough colostrum. Calves born to poorer milking heifers make the decision as to how much supplemental colostrum to give. It never hurts to give colostrum if in any doubt they have sucked such as a weak calf, a wild mother, a calf from a hard pull, a calf whose mother has very big teats etc. Give the whole package (100 grams of immunoglobulin’s) with good insurance their entire colostrum needs have been met.

Colostrum substitutes made from actual colostrum from Western Canadian dairy cows seems like a good idea to me. The more local the better to reflect prevention from diseases you are more likely to have show up in your own calves. At our clinic we used to acquire frozen colostrum from reputable dairies, which had scours, vaccinated their cows. Now most of these dairies contract to the Saskatoon Colostrum Company and the convenience for the farmer of a product easily kept at room temperature and easily rehydrated and fed when it is needed is huge.

There is new research, revealing how taking in colostrum sets the calf up for the long term in how fat is metabolized, and results in long term effects on the productivity of the animal. That critical first few hours of life and colostrum uptake have been proven time and time again to benefit the calf for the rest of its life. Lets ensure our newborn calves get that vital amount of colostrum in the first six hours of life.

If there is any doubt as to whether the amount was adequate or good quality don’t hesitate to give the colostrum replacer. It is an investment worth making, and will reap many benefits down the line both for that particular calf and for the herd in general, if for instance a herd outbreak of scours could be avoided.

This spring have a supply of colostrum replacer on hand because when you need it, you need it now, and I mean right now, within the first four-six hours of life.
