elcome to “Hereford Harvest III” hosted by one of the young, most dedicated Hereford families in the nation ....the O’Connor family. Hosts, Rob and Dawn, along with a group of progressive young breeders, lead off the annual “Saskatchewan Sweepsteaks” Hereford Weekend at their Lone Pine Ranch at Vibank. On the heels of a wonderful event in 2015, this year’s offering is stronger, deeper, offering opportunities for any size of operation and budget. Lone Pine offers herd building seed stock...starting with choice of two exciting herd sire prospects.... similar yet different.... and we know what the track record on bulls has been the past few years out of this program. The heifer calves are fancy, daughters of “Action,” that will be competitive as proven in the 2015 fall show season and the bred cattle are solid with exciting services. Similar to the Lone Pine lineup, the guest consignors offer unlimited opportunities as their selections come right off the top of the herds. For these young progressive breeders, this is their production sale since herd numbers are not large enough to host their own event. This combination of cattle offers a great diversity in both genetics and phenotype. Dear Hereford Friends and Fellow Cattlemen,

e would like to welcome you to the 2016 Hereford Harvest Sale. We are proud to host this annual event at our farm. It’s an opportunity for you to view and select cattle from some of the most enthusiastic purebred Hereford operations in Saskatchewan. These moderate sized operations offer a variety of fresh new genetics to the breed. The size of their herd size provides the flexibility to adjust quickly to the demands of the industry. This provides you a great opportunity to select cattle from their offering that have great value as breeding individuals and show ring contenders. The enthusiasm for the Hereford breed continues to increase. It was evident if you attended either the CJHA National Bonanza or the AJHA National Junior shows. They are the largest single breed junior shows in their countries! And you might have noticed how successful juniors were that exhibited cattle purchased from the Hereford Harvest consignors were at Bonanza! If you follow social media at all you will also notice there are hundreds if not thousands of people talking about and promoting this wonderful breed. The chatter is about everything from the excitement of seeing a little white face at calving time to the Hereford’s docile temperament to success in the show ring. It’s quite exhilarating. This year the sale catalogue begins with choice of two excellent herd bull prospects from great cow families. Even though we don’t offer many bull calves in the fall, I felt this is a great way to demonstrate the potential of the genetics that are offered in this sale. There are also several fancy show ring contending heifer calves, bred heifers and a few proven cows available on October 14. Each consignor has dug deep and is offering cattle from the heart of their herd. Regarding the Lone Pine consignment, we are offering some very exciting opportunities. Past sale animals have gone on to do very well for their new owners and I anticipate the same with our 2016 offering. You will notice that several of the animals have the “Kirby-Lone Pine” prefix. Peter and Carol Kirby have been long time partners in many of the best cow families here. This year we are offering more of these partnership calves and yearlings than ever before, and each one of these is very exciting. We would like to invite you to Vibank on October 14. Sale begins at 2:00 pm. A Hereford roast beef lunch will be served at noon.

Oathkeeper was selected to begin the sale because he is a great example of what the Lone Pine breeding program is. He is the product of our focus on strong cow families for the purpose of raising great breeding bulls. And what better cow family to feature again than the Reese family? If you have been following our program you will know how important this family has become and the successes accumulated including that of Oathkeeper’s sister. Reese 500C was awarded the Agribition Reserve Senior Champion heifer last fall and has gone on to win four more championships this spring. Also Kelsey, his ¾ brother was the $18,000 high seller at this year’s bull sale. Oathkeeper himself is an attractive individual. In fact he has enough style, muscle shape and depth of flank and middle to be very competitive in the show. He even has enough hair to turn the heads of 4-H clubby breeders! With the consistency in his pedigree I expect him to reproduce his type as much as any bull I’ve raised.

ACTION has been a fantastic addition to our herd bull battery. When we purchased him from ANL and Alan Hjertaas we felt he was the most useful and attractive bull in their sale. I think we were right. Not only is he himself a classy show bull it looks like his sons and daughters are going to be exciting too! This is a bull that offers the beef industry everything it needs in a heifer bull. A low birth weight of 76 pounds. Excellent muscle shape. Full pigment. Moderate frame. An added bonus is his dark coloring. This guy has a fantastic mother that was originally purchased from Lian Mor Farm in Ontario. She was a former show heifer but I bought her because I remembered a visit to Wally and Fern’s herd where I saw her grandmother Crystal Belle 108C. In my mind she was the perfect cow. Nice tight udder with small teats, long body and feminine front end. She was ahead of her time. 108A is a bull calf that exhibits that same type of length and style and I expect his daughters will too.

His pedigree is stacked with individuals who have proven to be the best breeding individuals of their generations. When John Bosnjak became partners with us in this bull, it was his excellent idea to change 707B’s name from Gordon to TRIBUTE to honor all those great breeders who are documented in his pedigree. Yet his pedigree is different from most of today’s “High EPD” bulls and that makes him very useful. In fact he can add to what many of these bulls are lacking such as pigment, hair color, bone and joint type. He has been crowned Champion Bull at the South East Saskatchewan Mark of Excellence Show, Reserve Grand Champion Bull at the Manitoba Livestock Expo, and most recently Lexie showed him to Grand Champion Bull at 2016 Beef-A-Rama and Bonanza. This is proof of his excellent structure and eye appeal. As you can see we are very excited about the positive ways TRIBUTE will influence our herd and the breed. For the past number of years, I have wanted to add genetics to our herd from Ned and Jan Ward’s Ladysport cow family. Even though I was unsuccessful in my attempt to purchase this son in their bull sale, I was able to acquire semen for use in our herd. He is a light birth weight individual. I appreciate his color, depth of body and not to mention his father is one of the most popular bulls in recent times. The fact that he is homozygous polled is another benefit. We chose to use him on DIESEL and ACTION heifers.

Lone Pine Junior Thank You Incentive Program Lone Pine Cattle Services and the consignors of the Hereford Harvest sale would like to thank each Junior Hereford Association or 4-H member that has bought an animal from us and shown it. We recognize the cost these young people endure when showing cattle. If a junior Hereford or 4-H member shows an animal that they purchased from a consignor at the Hereford Harvest sale, the consignor who they purchased the animal from will provide them with a $250 credit towards their next purchase from that consignor. These cattle can be shown as a 4-H project, at a provincial or national junior show or any other show. We only require at least one photo of the animal and the junior member who purchased the animal from the show in which it was exhibited. We will also honour the CJHA Heifer lottery. These two programs can be combined. Each junior can qualify for the credit once per animal. The credit must be used by December 1 of the year the animal was shown.

The terms of the sale are cash or cheque, payable at par at sale location. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement has been made; no invoicing on buyers in attendance unless previous arrangements have been made. Every animal sells to the highest bidder and in cases of disputes, the auctioneer’s decision will be final. Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Current exchange rates will be announced sale day. All monies are in Canadian funds.
All persons attend the sale at their own risk. The seller, facility owner and sale manager assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents that occur.
