Last year’s sale was squeaked in before COVID-19 hit the fan! We sincerely hope that everyone has stayed healthy and have not been too adversely affected. The bull sale season this year looks to be as challenging as last, but together we will navigate through! We debated changing the sale format to online only but decided to keep with our tradition as much as possible, with flexibility for change. With AHS regulations in constant flux, we ask that you check the sale page on our website and Facebook page for updates. The past couple of years we have used DLMS on sale day and we will continue that this year. We will have videos of the bulls available and online after the first week of February.

It has been quite a few years since our bull/heifer ratio was so heavy on bull calves. To pare down to around 60 sale bulls, 30% of the pen was culled.

There is excellent performance in every bull and the consistency is outstanding! Our cows come from calving ease bulls, if we see problems with the calving or potential for problems, their progeny is not offered for sale. With the past being heavy on females our cow herd has grown in quality too. Not only are we excited to offer this pen of bulls, but our future pens. Always striving to improve our herd.

A couple of new sire groups this year. Fire ‘N Ice, a bull we raised with curve bending EPDs and his progeny didn’t disappoint. Added LT Authority for his calving ease and general stature and structure. The LT bulls we have been using have added a lot of quality to our herd, in all ways, and Authority looks to be a great addition too.

The quality of our feed production this year was second to none! All feed was tested and a ration balanced for 3 lbs./day gain formulated. The pen averaged over that! Good for us, even better for you, they are genetically good gainers!

It appears this year’s sale ‘social’ gathering size will probably be reduced, we are going to miss that. The bulls will be at the auction mart for viewing starting Thursday morning and until sale time. Of course, we always welcome you to view the bull pen at the farm . We look at it as an opportunity for you to decide which day works best for you to inspect the bulls!

Welcome to the 16th Annual HEJ Charolais Bull Sale on Friday, February 26, 2021 at the Innisfail Auction Mart, Innisfail, Alberta. For over the past fifteen years, on the last Friday in February, this event has been approved as a “Real Cow Man’s” bull sale. This is based on the repeat buyers who source their sires year after year from the Rasmussen family. Buyers as far away as Iowa and as close as Innisfail.

The 2021 edition is powerful with depth running through each sire group. Deep, thick, soggy, with lots of hair and testicle, the lineup offers white, tan, reds and two blacks. Many of the bulls selling are homo polled, the HEJ gene pool is quite different to that of other Charolais producers. Each sire group offers their own special trait… from high performance, to calving ease, to docility. These 60 bulls were produced out of a cow herd that numbers over 200 with only the top end allowed to go to town on February 26th.

The folks at HEJ will tell it how it is. Any bull with a little more birth weight is there because Henrik believes they are problem free and stands behind the bulls they produce and offer. The goal each year at HEJ is getting your cow bred by a value added Charolais sire, with the least trouble, so that you can enjoy the benefits.

Fire ‘N Ice is a new addition to the semen tank. We sold him in 2019 to Kattle Kountry but retained some semen to use in herd and he did not disappoint. His calves were the top gaining in the pen. They topped the scales at weaning and as yearlings. He has an excellent set of numbers, in the top 2% for Wean, Yearling and Milk and top 15% for Birth Weight. His sister was the pick of the Affinity heifers that sold to McLeod Livestock in 2019.

If he had been HOMO polled he would not have left the yard!

Starting off the catalogue with an individual that speaks for the whole pen. A rock-solid boy that will impress with his width, topline and hindquarter. Crossed with an awesome dam that has pedigree to burn. He has good feet and legs, tidy sheath, good hair coat and a nice loose hide for growth. Really pleased with the Authority calves. We used him successfully on both heifers and veteran cows, calving with ease, generally with a shorter gestation.

They hit the ground vigorous and with substance and continued to bloom over the summer. The whole group is quiet and easy to handle.

Ya, he’s a hell of a bull! Another super quiet bull that just would not take a good picture… as the Queen would say… “I must be seen to be believed!” A long, soggy, deep meat machine. Thickness in all the right places. Structurally sound.

His dam is long, deep and thick, so, his birth weight while seemingly high, is not out of place for a fifth calf on a big, long, broody cow.

Well, let’s Rock ‘n Roll the night away with this guy! He pretty much has the easiest calving EPD of the whole pen. Would not expect anything less from Authority and a Legend dam. No worries at calving and yet has that typical Charolais oomph wanted at weaning. Lots of spring in his rib. Clean sheathed.

Heat Wave Sr (his dam) turned out to be one of those cows that started out quite unassuming but rose to the top of the herd quickly, becoming a Dam of Distinction. A head turner bull to end this sire group with. After raising twins as a first calver, his dam came back to bring home a top performing bull at weaning. He did not look back, continuing to put on the pounds to yearling. Lots of “pop” in the stifle and length of body.

We must be honest. We have given this bull the LT Rushmore X HEJ 102A pedigree, but it could have a LT Authority X HEJ 61A pedigree. HEJ 61A raised this calf we ID’d as the Rushmore X HEJ 102A at birth. We noticed the problem when the calf we ID’d as LT Authority X 61A died and the wrong cow was upset!

It is interesting to note on this guy how his calving EPDs work. While the national average for Birth Weight is 0.9 and Calving Ease is about 5.2, his EPDs say he is 0.6 above the average for BW yet his CE is 2 points better than average.

So, you need to look at this guy’s structure and decide how he will work on your cows, he seems built right to us. His dam (who always comes for a scratch) is a Chester, who sires long, thick calves. He has a big birth weight but we would not put him in the sale if we did not feel confident in him. He is smooth shouldered with a long body. Him mom is a big tan cow and Ledger Up is an easy calving boy.

Terms: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque, payable at par at the sale location. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement has been made; no invoicing on buyers in attendance, unless previous arrangements have been made. Every animal sells to the highest bidder and in cases of disputes, the auctioneer’s decision will be final.

Current exchange rates will be announced sale day. All monies are in Canadian funds.

Bidding: Each animal will sell to the highest bidder... no by-bidding will be permitted. Disputes - Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved in dispute. If no further bidding is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision on all disputes will be final.

Announcements: All announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay close attention to such disclosures.

Breeder’s Guarantee: Should any bull fourteen (14) months of age or over fail to prove a breeder after being used on females known to be breeders, the matter shall be reported in writing to the seller within six (6) months following the date of purchase or six (6) months after the bull has reached fourteen (14) months of age. The seller will have the right and privilege of six (6) months to prove the bull a breeder.

No guarantee is given that semen collected from the bull will freeze.

Exception Guarantee: In cases where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques after the sale, this guarantee shall be null and void.

Certificate of Registration: Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Charolais Association. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer for each animal after payment has been made.

Pedigree Estimates Pedigree Estimates (PE) are created on the projected mating of the animal’s sire and dam based on averages of the two, creating estimated values that do not hold the same accuracy of actual EPDs issued from the association and should be used as such.

Liabilities: All persons attend the sale at their own risk. The seller, facility owner and sale manager assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents that occur. It is understood that T Bar C Cattle Co. (2013) Ltd. is acting only as a medium between buyer and seller and is not responsible for any failure on the part of either party to live up to his obligations. Neither does T Bar C Cattle Co. (2013) Ltd. assume any financial obligations to collect or enforce collection of any monies between parties and any legal action that may in exceptional cases be taken must be between the buyer and the seller. T Bar C Cattle Co. (2013) Ltd. assumes no responsibility for any credit extended by the seller to the buyer. The buyer must look to the seller for fulfillment of all guarantees and representations made hereunder.

Rights and Obligations: The above terms and conditions of the sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller and be equally binding to both. Resale of animals following purchase in this sale shall constitute a separate transaction and the rights and obligations of the two parties connected thereto are not covered by the terms and conditions of this sale.

Phone, Mail, Wire Bids: Bidders unable to attend the sale may phone, wire or mail their bids and instructions to the sale managers, auctioneer or special representatives. Bids must be received in sufficient time prior to the sale.

Delivery: We will assist in arranging transportation wherever possible. Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold.

Insurance: Will be available sale day. We strongly recommend that insurance is purchased for full value.

Errors: All announcements at sale time, written or oral, supersede any written material in the catalogue.
