From the Desk at T Bar...
Welcome to the 2020 edition of “Good as Gold” hosted by the Manitoba Hereford Association on Friday, December 4th in the heated Keystone Centre, Brandon, Manitoba. Each year, this group of dedicated Hereford producers show case their programs with a select offering which includes herd sire prospects, bred females and current year heifer calves ideal for 4-H club members and junior Hereford breeders. This year offers the largest lineup… diverse in phenotype and genetic makeup offering the beef industry fresh new models, many which will fit any front pasture. Most of the bred females carry early services; therefore, you are a month or so from getting return on your investment. This sale being in December and tax time, makes for a wonderful way to put these young females into your breeding program, rather than sending your hard-working dollars east. The fall sale season was strong throughout the nation. There is a shortage of Hereford influence throughout the beef sector and herd inventories are lower, in the same parallel as that of the national beef herd. This shortage will have to be filled to keep producing buckskins and baldies, which continue to top markets in sale barns throughout Canada. The cattle will be available for viewing the afternoon and evening prior the sale. Feel free to call any of these progressive breeders to discuss their offering or visit any of the breeding establishments prior. They will be pleased to give you a tour. This tank boasts an 82 lb. birth weight and a BW EPD of 0.5. He weaned off at a full 100 lbs. heavier than any other calf we raised this year. His two-year-old mother was also the first female in the herd bred back for next year. Her dam, Pixie 201A, was a $15,000 Agribition sale topper as a yearling. This was a very hard decision to put this young, attractive heifer in the sale knowing she will become a great cow. She would look very good on the halter and she’s got a tremendous set of EPDs to go along with her. She’s a very sound footed, stylish, deep barreled heifer who will drop an exceptional udder like her momma. She would make a great prospect for a junior to take to Bonanza next year in Brandon. If a junior does want to take her to Bonanza, I would gladly help get her ready and get her there for the junior. Tanya is super attractive and correct in her make up. She exhibits great extension in her front end and is super long spined, this blends into a great quarter with adequate shape and mass. Her dam was purchased from the Harvie Ranching sale a few years back as a heifer calf and brought $11,500. That spring we decided to breed her to R Leader and boy that was a great mating.
