President’s Message

2019 has been another super successful year for Galloway breeders and enthusiasts alike. We have seen a steady increase in demand for our Canadian genetics from abroad as well as an increase in popularity of the breed domestically. Belted registrations are once again higher this year than the other two breeds. There have been a growing number of new small producers across the country adding Galloways and Galloway genetics to their herds. We are seeing a continued push towards farm gate sales in live animals as well as beef sales creating a predictably stable niche market. While the general open market cattle prices have been poor, the private sales have remained consistent with sometimes a premium being seen in exceptional breeding stock. We are all certainly looking forward to the next World Galloway Congress in Kentucky, USA. The CGA has seen a greater number of Galloways being shown by juniors for different 4-H projects. It’s fantastic to see these young people promoting the breed. Our AGM this year was well attended in Central Ontario. A big thanks to the Eastern Galloway association for stepping up and putting this on. We had an opportunity to visit Slabtown Cidery in Uxbridge where not only do they make fantastic cider but they also feature Galloway beef as a normal part of their menu. We finished up the day with a cattle tour and bbq at the home of Vanessa Beach and Mark Shiers of Echo Valley Farm. Echo Valley raises belted galloways in a free range, ranch-style, grass fed/finished model. Our Eastern regional association has out done itself again with advertising, displays and education at a variety of events promoting the virtues of Galloway cattle. The membership has voted in favour of the creation of a fourth herd book for Riggit patterned white cattle. Once approved by the Ministry of Agriculture, there will be an introductory process then followed by the separation of the Riggit pattern or white with an abundant colour from the White Herd book. The membership also voted in favour for allowing video conferencing for our AGM to allow for maximum participation by members unable to travel. The weather was certainly challenging for crops but as always thanks to the overall hardiness of our cattle, they continue to thrive. My partner Mark and I wanted to add a solid purebred foundation to my family’s grass finished commercial herd and Belted Galloways were the logical choice. We are looking forward to working with other breeders to continue maintaining and promoting this fantastic breed!

Janice and I chose Belted Galloway for our grass fed beef program for many reasons especially their easy going and hardy nature. When asked, “Why Belted Galloway?” I just say, “They are outstanding in their field... how much time do you have?”

I am a sixth generation farmer and a breeder of purebred registered black belted Galloway cattle on 87 acres in the hills of Caledon. We market new breeding stock and are also working toward a “smart farming” Galloway/Angus commercial freezer beef farm to table program.

Suncrest Farms Galloways in Listowel is where I call home with my husband Greg. I have been raising Galloways since my early years with my parents on the home farm here. I have three beautiful grown daughters and two very special grandchildren that help me continue in my love of the cattle. We have a small herd of 16 cows with blacks, duns, silver duns and belts.

Canadian Galloway Advance Report 2019 was a successful year for the Belted Galloway Society, Inc. The membership reached 1100 with 182 new members joining our organization. The Junior Belted Galloway handbook was updated, revised and reprinted after several months and many volunteered hours of work. Members seemed to be very pleased with the final product. The second year of the DNA and hypotrichosis testing of young bulls before they can be registered had been completed. In order to encourage members to register their bull prospects, the Society partially subsidizes the expense of the program. Most of our members have approved of this effort to help maintain and improve the integrity of the registration pedigrees. The Society continues to support registered Belted Galloway cattle through financial support of regional shows and exhibitions, the National sale and Premium sale as well as providing complementary first year memberships to any new member that either registers or transfers an animal when applying for membership. We have available, free of charge, useful, promotional materials as well as an annual Journal and a high quality, timely, informative, monthly newsletter. Our General Annual meeting was held again this year at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky in conjunction with the Society’s National Open and Junior show and Premium Sale. Jon Bednarski, a Belted Galloway Society Council member and Treasurer is also the current President of the World Galloway Congress. He has planned an exciting program for this year’s WGC meeting to be held in Louisville during the week that the beltie show and sale is scheduled. Points of interest included on the WGC schedule are the Bluegrass Stockyards Regional Marketplace, the Kentucky Cattleman’s YARD Education Center, the North American International Livestock Exposition, the Kentucky Horse Park plus several farm visits. Lunch and dinner venues include the Claudia Sanders Dinner House, Churchhill Downs, world famous Buffalo Trace Distillery and Elk Creek Vineyards. Registration and additional information is available online at www.worldgallowaycongressusa2020.com. There were 15 Belted Galloway point shows attended by Society members in 2019. The largest being in Fryeburg, Maine and the NAILE National show, each having 95 entries. The national open show was held in Freedom Hall, the main show arena and live streamed over the internet. Premiums were provided to exhibitors through the generosity of NAILE and the Belted Galloway Society. The National show had 31 junior exhibitors. The juniors were presented with various gifts and awards in addition to premiums.

Premium sale held in Louisville, Kentucky in the fall, had similar sale averages accept for bulls. Open heifers averaged $22102270, bred heifers $2700-2900, bulls $1550-3200, embryos $200220 and semen $41-57/straw. The Premium sale was conducted by Mike Jones, a nationally known auctioneer from Georgia. The live auction was held in the New Market arena and was streamed live over the internet. The total number of registered Belted Galloways in the US according to the last report was 17,670. Texas has the largest number followed by New York, Wisconsin and Maine. The Society’s website is hosted and maintained by EDJE Web Design, a company that specializes working with livestock organizations. The Belted Galloway Society is inviting all interested Canadians to Louisville this November to attend the World Galloway Congress and are looking forward to providing an interesting, exciting and educational meeting.

Ruth Dedman This year I showed Big Deal Free Mammy 8F as my 4-H project. This calf was one of two yearling heifers we shipped from Alberta and I am excited about the genetic diversity she will bring to our herd here in Ontario. This was my last year as a 4-H member and I am thankful for the opportunity to compete in so many fall fairs over the years and how I’ve developed as a showperson. I’ve been glad to show Galloways for the past five years and am planning to continue to show cattle for my farm in the years to come. Thank you for your commitment to supporting junior members and 4-H!

Chelsea Weiler

Hello, my name is Chelsea Weiler and I am a member of the Waterloo County 4H Beef Club. This year, I chose to exhibit CrossCreek Fire, a red Galloway, as my 2019 beef project animal. We attended four fairs including New Hamburg Fall Fair, Drumbo Fall Fair, Erin Fall Fair, and Rockton Worlds Fair. I was especially proud when we placed second in showmanship at both New Hamburg and Erin. Throughout the show season, I enjoyed working specifically with my Galloway heifer because of her naturally calm temperament that most Galloways seem to have. Each of the four years that I have shown Galloways have always been a pleasure and I look forward for the years to come in the beef club. Alice Van Vugt For my first year showing a beef cow for Waterloo 4-H, I showed a Galloway heifer called Myra at Dedmandale Farms. We showed at the New Hamburg, Drumbo, and Rockton fall fairs. New Hamburg was the Waterloo Beef club’s achievement day, where I received sixth in showmanship and fifth in conformation. I received second in showmanship and fourth in conformation at Drumbo. I also participated in the fitting competition with Chelsea Weiler at Rockton, where we won fourth place. My favourite show was the Rockton Fall Fair because Myra and I worked well together, and I saw all my hard work pay off. Even though this show season is over, I can’t wait to show again next year! I would like to thank the Canadian Galloway Association and the Eastern Canadian Galloway Association for your support.

Max Burris

My name is Max Burris and I had two powerful Galloway animals. I am in the Central Lacombe Beef Club. This year I had a three year old and her name was Susie and her calve’s name was, Que. I have shown Susie for three years and am sad I can’t show her anymore. Que was a 90 pound bull calf born on March 20, 2019. This year with Susie we won Grand Champion Three Year Old for club and district, Champion Junior Cow/ Calf Showmanship Club, and Reserve Champion Junior Cow/Calf Showmanship District. My black steer’s name was Sirloin. He was a purebred Galloway and he and I participated in the 4-H Alberta Provincial Steer Carcass Competition. We got 2nd in the West Central area and 3rd overall for the whole thing, the whole province of Alberta! He graded AAA moderate which means almost Prime! He just didn’t have marbling in the one area of the ribeye. My Galloways were great and I would love to get another one this year. All the animals came from the MacTaggart family. Special thanks to Peggy, Bob and Amy for all their help and making everything happen. I appreciate all their help I couldn’t do it without them.

This year was my second year showing in the Haldimand 4-H Beef Club. I had the opportunity to show a belted Galloway from my family farm. With my junior heifer, 2 bridges Lexi, we started off the year by receiving Champion Galloway Heifer at the London Junior Beef Expo in March. Throughout the year, we competed at many other shows such as Caledonia Fair, Ancaster Fair, Erin Fall Fair and Lexi was Reserve Champion for the 4-H show at the Binbrook Fair. Lexi and I ended our year at the Masterfeeds Junior Show at the Royal Winter Fair. Lexi was first in her class, as well as Reserve Champion All Other Breed Heifer. It was an excellent year and I can’t wait to show again next year!

orld Galloway Congress comes to Louisville, Kentucky, USA

The US Belted Galloway Society is honored and excited to welcome the 13th World Galloway Congress to Louisville, Kentucky. The Congress will be held from November 14-20, 2020, in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center. The Society invites Belted Galloway and Galloway breeders worldwide, along with our members from across the United States, to attend this special event and unique opportunity to network face-to-face with your colleagues from our cattle industry. Following a Saturday evening “Meet and Greet,” there are six days of scheduled events which offer something for everyone. Activities include museum visits, farm tours, a visit to the stateof-the-art Bluegrass Stockyards, a tour of the famous Kentucky Horse Park, a day at the Livestock Exposition (NAILE), and presentations by agricultural education experts. Lunch and dinner venues include Claudia Sanders Dinner House, the world-renowned Buffalo Trace bourbon distillery, Elk Creek Vineyards, and an afternoon of racing on Millionaires Row at Churchill Downs – home of the Kentucky Derby.

Registration for the 2020 World Galloway Congress is available now on the website at www.worldgallowaycongressusa2020. com. The registration fee is $550 per delegate. Early bird registration is available for $500, when registering by May 1st 2020. All registrations must be received by August 1, 2020. You’ll be able to pay on-line when you register using a credit card. The registration fee includes the welcome reception, annual banquet, most dinners and lunches, along with luxury coach transportation to all scheduled events. All venues are less than a 90-minute bus ride from the hotel, and many are shorter. The host hotel, the Crowne Plaza, is conveniently located adjacent to the Louisville International Airport (SDF) and the Kentucky Exposition Center, site of NAILE. Reviewing the Importance of Hoof Trimming in the Beef Industry Randall Martin Fineline Hoof Care Inc.

As a professional hoof trimmer with over 20 years experience, and over 200,000 trims under my belt, I’ve been privileged to grow personally with the growing and evolving industry of foot care in cattle. My business is one that has been in the family for two generations beginning in 1982. Since that time most cattle in the dairy industry have been removed from pasture and confined to indoor facilities. That change along with major feed changes resulted in an explosion of lameness and subsequent research of treatment and prevention strategies. In 2012 the industry upgraded to the computerized software for lameness data collection named “Hoof Supervisor.” This enables us to track all lameness, in categories and percentages, which helps us to see lameness trends on farm.

White Galloways, miniature Belted Galloways and miniature Galloways. Membership is constant from year to year at around 140 members, which includes life members, juniors and commercial members. Interest in Galloway cattle remains strong, with the non selective grazing habits of the cattle and their ability to forage, making them ideal for most of the diverse Australian conditions, especially in the tough drought conditions currently being endured in many areas. The Galloway family has had a high profile in the last twelve to fifteen months in Australia. The World Galloway Congress brought many overseas Galloway Family breeders to Australia, in September 2018 and several members opened their properties to the tours organized after the Congress. Warialda Belted Galloway Beef hosted a fabulous lunch, and gave a great presentation on their paddock to plate operation. Another day trip where Glenburn Station opened their gates to welcome visitors to view their Galloway cattle on display. Following a short drive to Balytyckle Miniature Galloway Stud, visitors were welcomed by a piper and treated to a delicious afternoon tea, and a viewing of the stud’s miniature Galloway cattle. Following on from this great event, the Royal Canberra Show hosted the Galloway Family as the Feature Breed at its February 2019 show. It was a great display, with record numbers of over 80 head of cattle, with classes for each type of Galloway. Exhibitors came from Queensland and Victoria, as well as New South

Wales. Spectators also came from far afield for a friendly, happy show with quality, well prepared and presented cattle on display. Judge Peter Collins, and associate judge Hamish McClure put in a big day, clearly explaining their decisions for their choices of winners and placegetters. Ribbons were spread around the exhibitors, with the finale for the day being the awarding of the Supreme Galloway Family exhibit. This was chosen from: • Supreme Galloway Exhibit; senior cow Monreith Hiver with calf at foot, exhibited by Jason and Suzanne Vials • Supreme Belted Galloway Exhibit; heifer 20 – 24 months 7 Hills Nutmeg, exhibited by Peter Munday and Alexandrea Teuma • Supreme Miniature Galloway Exhibit; senior bull Torcroft Thyme, exhibited by Alan and Pauline Dunk, and • Supreme Miniature Belted Galloway Exhibit; heifer 18 – 20 months, Kermond Park Nina, exhibited by Shane Smeathers and William Brigham. After deliberation and much discussion by the judges, 7 Hills Nutmeg was awarded Supreme Galloway Family Exhibit. Following the judging, exhibitors and supporters gathered together for a pleasant evening, enjoyed a delicious meal and caught up with friends. Since then, Association members have been out and about at their local shows and field days, busy promoting the Galloway breed to the general public and interested people. Their hard work in preparing the animals and having them on display is a testament to their loyalty to the Galloway Family, their tenaciousness in the face of hardship, and helps the Association remain the vibrant organization that it is. Beef Breeders Association (www.cschms.cz) is T hetheCzech organization, which is authorised by the Ministry of

Agriculture of the Czech Republic to co-ordinate and organize a selection program for all beef breeds reared in the Czech Republic. Since it was established in 1990, the CSCHMS’ main objectives are especially: performance recording, evaluation of animals, selection of young bulls for breeding at performance test stations (both for insemination and natural services bulls), estimation of breeding values (with assistance of Agricultural Research Institute in Prague), keeping of a Herd-Books, the promotion of beef cattle (shows, seminars), etc. The CSCHMS operates all over the Czech Republic and associates more than 1,000 breeders of all beef breeds (25 in these days) including Galloway. Within the CSCHMS, breeders’ clubs for particular breeds have been established. These breeders’ clubs are independent in coordinating the breeding aims and tools of a particular breed - they assign the selection program, standard of breeds and all other matters regarding their breed.

The Galloway Club

The Galloway club was established in 1991 with the import of the first animals from the Germany and Austria. Gradually the breed was expanded - mostly to the mountain regions of the Czech Republic (South Bohemia and North Moravia). By establishing a Herd-Book and the establishment of the Breeders Club Galloway, the breeding work in our country reached a high level. This is documented by the results achieved in the performance recording. The first appreciation of our breeders’ work was an invitation to the Congress of the World Galloway Association in 1998.

From an economic point of view, breeders are increasingly thinking about how to monetize this tasteful meat. The result is an increasing number of small farms. The animals are brought from slaughterhouses, processed and offered to end customers directly from the farm. This sales method strengthens the relationship between the farmer and the customer and increases the awareness of this breed and the environmentally friendly way of farming. However, due to the number of animals kept in the Czech Republic, it is not possible to create a network of Galloway meat shops, which is why this meat is sold locally, directly by farmers.

Vision and Direction of Breeding Galloway

There are references to the fact that Galloway should go along like other beef breeds, increase harness and height and thereby commercialize this beef breed. These pressures are mostly rejected by breeders and Galloway still holds the role of an extensive breed in the Czech Republic. Minimum limits are set for yearling animals (breeding bull) height 114 cm, weight 290 kg and for heifers 110 cm and 242 kg. The long-term breeding plan/aim is 344 kg for yearling bulls and 290 kg for heifers.

The breeds of Galloway are situated in the middle and higher areas throughout the Czech Republic. Breeders use their excellent features such as durability, longevity and excellent meat flavour. Whole black and white park colour dominates. In recent years, breeders have also found the belted, dun and riggit variety. Their numbers are on the rise but most breeds, however, still remain with the original black colour.

Bone in Grass Fed Galloway Beef short rib cut into equal portions »» ¼ cups Extra virgin olive oil »» Kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper »» 1 tbsp Ginger, minced »» 1 ½ cups Beef stock, reserved »» 1 pint Hoppy pale ale »» 2 sprigs Rosemary »» 2 sprigs Thyme »» 1 tbsp Honey

Instructions:

1. Preheat Oven to 375oF. 2. Heat half the oil in a pot on the stove at medium heat. Season the Grass Fed Galloway Beef short ribs with salt and pepper. Once the oil is hot put in the beef short ribs, searing each side until dark brown sear marks appear, then set aside. Add onion and 3 garlic cloves, cook until onions are translucent. Add carrots and celery to the pot, cook until celery is soft. Deglaze the pan with ½ cup beef stock, scraping the bottom the free up any stuck pieces. 3. Return Grass Fed Galloway beef to the pot along with the beer and the rest of the beef stock. Add thyme and rosemary. Bring to a boil and cook for 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cover and put in the oven for 2 hours. 4. While the Grass Fed Galloway beef is cooking, heat the remaining oil in the frying pan on medium heat. Once hot, add the remaining garlic, ginger and honey to the pan. Add broccoli and green beans, cook until broccoli stalks are soft. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside. 5. Once the Grass Fed Galloway beef short ribs are done cooking, using a ladle, scoop half a cup of the braising liquid into a the frying pan. Put pan on medium and cook liquid until it starts to thicken. Season with salt and pepper to taste 6. Serve, broccoli, beans and beef short ribs on a plate, use thickened braising liquid to top. Enjoy.

CGA Registration Activity In 2019 Registration activity in the Canadian Galloway Association in 2019 saw a modest 3% increase in the number of animals registered compared to 2018.There were 332 animals registered in 2019, consisting of 74 bulls and 208 heifers. This number includes 235 solid colour Galloways, 46 Belted Galloways, 22 White Galloways and 29 Belted Galloway Appendix animals. Of the solid colour animals, 144 were black, 39 were dun and 52 were red. Of the animals registered, 304 were from natural matings, 27 from A.I. matings and 1 by embryo transplant. Of the total registrations, 157, comprising 47%, were from Alberta and 152, comprising 46%, from Ontario, with the remaining 7% coming from the other provinces and the U.S.A. There were 10 registrations in Saskatchewan, 4 in British Columbia, and 9 in the U.S.A. The number of transfers was 28% higher than in 2018, with a total of 190 animals of all types having been transferred. 3 bulls and 3 females were transferred for export to the United States. the world of Riggits with purchases from the Hatherland and Sherberton herds. Notably, he has secured ownership of Clifton Hawthorn’s last calf, a marked yearling bull by Craig Dougal. We wish you all the best of luck with them Robert. And the Society congratulates long-time Associate member Gemma Bounds on her upgrade, now she owns Riggit heifer, Hatherland Juno. Gemma has had six first place tickets through the summer showing Juno, who is going to continue living at Hatherland due to Gemma’s lawn not being big enough.

News from the USA

The fate of Riggits around the world has been varied since long before the inception of the RGCS. And so, it continues. While we started our own herdbook, and then began keeping a register for our colleagues in New Zealand, breeders in Germany carried on without hindrance, and one or two in Canada have been building numbers. There are moves there under consideration to formally register Riggits as such. Lately, some animals have been appearing and retained in Australia, although where they’ll be registered remained a matter of some discussion. This is all good and moving forward. But in the US, there have been hardly any Riggit Galloways reported. A handful of cattle keepers are wanting to head in a Riggity direction, registering them as ‘overmarked’ Whites under the AGBA (American Galloway Breeders Association) rules. But to the dismay of those concerned, these rules have instead lately been tightened to exclude Riggit animals, leaving breeders with an interest wondering what to do. Whether there is impetus to start their own herdbook as a stand-alone group or ask their Northern neighbours to add them to a future register remains to be seen. We are feeling for you folks, having trodden similar paths.

Riggit Galloways have once again been showing their shaggy heads in public across the country. In the Southwest, The Mid Devon show in August saw several Riggits in the

AONB classes. Alison Bunning and Alison Geen lead Hatherland Hestia and Sherberton Dory to take second and third respectively behind Colin Hutchings imported black Galloway, in the cow/heifer class. Then Mrs. Bunning took top honours in both junior heifer and pairs classes, and your secretary led Sherberton Erik to a first in the bull class, and subsequently reserve champion. Other successes for Hatherland included heifer Hestia and her calf taking Rare Breed champion at Dorset County, and winning pairs classes at both Dorset with Juno and Jovian (heifer and young bull). In the East, Jeremy Perkins had a very successful outing for the Two Mills herd, at the Royal Norfolk Show. Two Mills Mary (White Galloway) took Supreme Champion in Any Other Native Breed Class, while Jeremy’s Riggit stock bull ‘Hatherland Finlay’ took Best Male and Reserve Champion. They went on to take a Special Prize as best pair. In the North, September saw the estimable Westmorland show include Riggit classes, alongside the National Belted Galloway classes. The Keiley’s ‘Croft’ and Robbie Galloway’s ‘Cardona’ herds both ventured down from North of the border. While the rain streamed incessantly the show went ahead. The Keileys put in a creditable show but were pipped in both male and female classes. Cardona’s stockman Ewen McRobert lead out ‘Barfil Bill’ to take top honours and champion Riggit. This topped their first summer showing Riggit Galloways, where they’ve created quite a splash showing beasts across Scotland.

Summer Jamboree

This summer, we were invited to visit Ashdown Forest in Sussex. Caroline Fitzgerald and her team – notably the ever-affable Dan made members very welcome, showing us their conservation grazing program across this unexpected home counties gem. Using Hebridean sheep, Exmoor ponies, as well as their growing herd of Riggits, the team are opening up a glorious mix of lowland heath vegetation, which would otherwise be closing in under thickets of birch. While many members think they have got problems with the public tramping everywhere and walking their dogs, this was an eye opener. The Ashdown Forest Centre was our base, and where we were generously fed and watered. Further excursions over two days took us to the outstanding ‘Black Venn’ herd of Sussex cattle nearby, owned by Elizabeth Buchanan, a nuclear bunker on top of Ashdown Forest currently being used for police training, and Wakehurst Place Botanical Garden, home to the ‘Millennium Seed Bank Kew’. The following day saw us motor a little way east, to visit the Surrey Wildlife Trust, and their cattle on Boxhill. Hosted by James Stoyles, we were shown a very good – and growing- herd of Belted Galloways, along with one or two Riggits. We learned more about managing cattle in areas with widespread public access. Several members couldn’t resist the walk down from a viewpoint high on Boxhill, down to the pasture where several cattle were running with the bull, and yet more provender awaited delegates. Taken altogether, it was yet another outstanding trip, and the Society is profoundly grateful to all of our kind hosts, assistants, and everyone who made it happen.
