Message from the CSA President Message du président CAS On behalf of the Canadian Simmental Association welcome to the annual Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation Fundraiser Auction. Since it’s inception it has grown into one of the major Simmental events in Canada, bringing everyone from across the country together as it continues to grow every year. This is the major fundraising event of the year for the FCSF and the funds raised here will allow the FCSF to continue the work it does in supporting youth development, scholarships and bursaries, and research and development.

Huge thanks to the donors, sponsors, industry partners, and everyone that has purchased in the past at this great sale. Also a big thanks to the organizing committee for putting together what is sure to be an exciting event. If you cannot be here in person, but would like to be involved in the sale contact any of the sales consultants, FCSF directors, or take part online on DLMS. See you in Saint-Hyacinthe!

Depuis sa création, cet événement Simmental est devenu l’un des plus majeur au Canada. Il rassemble plusieurs amoureux de la race et qui grandit année après année. Who is the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation The Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation (FCSF) is a not-for-profit registered foundation dedicated to scholarship and educational support of youth in the business of agriculture and Simmental cattle. The Foundation is governed by a board of directors who are heavily involved in the Simmental industry and who have a vested interest in educating youth, developing leadership, and encouraging young people to be a part of the agriculture industry.

The Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation belongs to all of those that had the vision to believe in bringing the Simmental breed to Canada, those that supported and have developed it over the past 52 years, and those that see the value it brings to the generations of the future.

Focus of the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation Scholarships - The FCSF administers scholarships for youth who are involved in Canadian agriculture. Assisting in the development of youth with a focus on advancing their understanding of agriculture is a very important component of the FCSF. Youth Development - The FCSF supports youth programs such as the Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA). The YCSA is one of the most progressive and dynamic agricultural youth organizations in Canada. It is open to anyone 25 years and under who then have the opportunity to participate in various activities across Canada. YCSA members learn important skills including public speaking, marketing and communications which develop strong and dynamic leaders for not only our industry, but society as a whole.

Research and Development - The FCSF is actively engaged in supporting research to benefit the agriculture industry in Canada.

This work is focused on improving the Canadian beef industry by enhancing production efficiency, product quality and profitability.

What the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation is doing FSCF Scholarships The Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation is honored to administer 5 exciting post-secondary scholarships. The Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation recognizes the importance of supporting youth in agriculture and their goals of advanced education. The scholarship program is one of the ways that the Foundation intends to support youth and the future of the livestock industry. In 2019 the FSCF will award $12,000 in scholarships.

The current 2018 winners are listed on page 30 or go online to www.simmentalfoundation.com to find past winners and the current application form that can be used for all three of the scholarships for the 2019-20 academic year.

Youth Development The FCSF supports youth programs such as the Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA). The YCSA is one of the most progressive and dynamic agricultural youth organizations in Canada. It is open to anyone 25 years and under who then have the opportunity to participate in various activities across Canada.

For 2019 the FCSF will directly support the YCS with a portion of the Auction process going directly to their program to assist in the operation of their 2019 – 20 activities.

How to Contribute to the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation

The Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation value all of those that support the philosophy and work the Foundation is committed to. With the FCSF having Charitable Tax Status we are able to provide those who donate to the Foundation with a charitable tax receipt. FCSF supports the programs and activities that not only benefit the Agriculture Industry today but also helps establish the future of the agriculture industry for tomorrow’s youth.

In addition to donating or purchasing at the Foundation Fundraising Auctions each year, you can also use some of the other traditional methods of giving include such as: cash donations, sponsorships and memorials.

Opportunity is defined as a set of circumstances that makes something possible. In my case, I was personally provided with many opportunities through being involved in multiple ways with the CSA and its youth programs. From YCSA member, scholarship recipient, Youth Congress representative, employee and active member the experiences for me have been endless. I have done my fair share of traveling, learning, networking and educating, but nothing beats the people I have met along the way. I am confident that those currently involved in this industry are the best in the business. In turn, I also stand firm behind the fact that the future of Simmental in Canada will flourish so long as we continue to support programs such as the Foundation. Thank you for all of my personal opportunities and cheers to many more for others in the years to come.

Having the opportunity to participate in the YCSA program was truly a tremendous experience. Growing up in an area where there weren't many kids with farm knowledge, it was a joy to be able to participate in YCSA events with people my own age, and who shared my passion for the breed.

Later on I was able to participate in events across Canada, and made many contacts and friendships that exist to this day. With the help of the scholarship program I was able to complete my studies and go on to purchase my own farm to continue the cattle operation. I had an absolute blast in YCSA and hope my kids get to have the same great experience in the future Avoir la possibilité de participer au programme YCSA a vraiment été une expérience formidable. I remember my first YCSA experience in Calgary in 1992. We had celebrated my 5th birthday in the Calgary tower. I did not speak any English but with some signs and help from seniors I had an excellent and rewarding experience. Also in 1998 in PEI my dad bought me my first cow throught the YCSA: her name was Miss Confederation and it’s always something special for a young kid. I was hook on the Simmental family after that!

These events allow us to build very strong friendships and future relationships that allow us to advance the Simmental breed across Canada. The National classic of young breeders allows us to open our horizons on different cultures and the reality of agriculture across Canada. This program is forging the leaders of tomorrow. I sat for 7 years on the National Young Breeders board, which serves me a lot in my role as director of the CSA. I encourage everyone to participate in this beautiful weekend; you can only win from it.

Je me souviens de ma première expérience à Calgary en 1992 en tant que jeune éleveur Simmental. Nous avions célébré mon 5ième anniversaire de naissance dans le restaurant de la tour de Calgary. Je ne parlais pas un mot anglais mais avec quelques signes et l’aide des seniors j’ai eu une excellente et enrichissante expérience. Également en 1998, à l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard, mon père m’a acheté ma première vache à la Classique National: elle s’appelait Miss Confederation et pour le jeune enfant que j’étais ce fut quelque chose de très spécial. Après cela, je suis devenu accro à la famille Simmental! Ces événements nous permettent de construire de très forte amitié et des relations qui nous permettent de faire avancer la race Simmental au Canada. La Classique National des jeunes éleveurs nous permet d’ouvrir nos horizons sur différentes cultures et réalités de l’agriculture à travers le Canada. Ce programme forge les leaders de demain. J’ai siégé 7 ans sur le comité national des jeunes éleveurs qui me sert énormément dans mon rôle de directeur au sein de la CSA. The Barber family is excited about the opportunity to work with the foundation and such a great cause. To be a Friend of the Canadian Simmental Foundation is a real honor and we wanted to donate something special. We have chosen Barlee Discovery 8F, a heifer from our 2018-2019 show string. She is an absolute sweetheart to deal with and is royally bred. Her sire is the legendary Drake Poker Face, and her dam MRL Miss 5405C is a MRL Discovery daughter from one of the favorite cow families at MRL. Her blaze face is a nice added touch.

We had been looking for eight years to find a polled herdsire that could make an impact in our herd the way Double Bar D Spitfire did, and we feel Kalibre not only fills those shoes but will surpass that legacy. FGAF Radioactive 030E was the sale topper in the 2018 Ferme Gagnon spring bull sale where he created quite a bit of excitement. He is a direct son of the very popular Guerrero bull, and the bottom of his pedigree traces back to the famous Barbl cow family. 2018 Scholarship and Bursary Winners

The Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation is honored to administer 3 exciting post-secondary scholarships and bursarys. The Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation will be providing two $3,000 scholarship to promising young students pursuing a degree or certificate at an accredited institution. The Dr. Allan Dixon Scholarship will be 2 scholarships of $2,000 each and the Trevor Vance Scholarship is one award of $2000 as well new for 2019 the FCSF Bursary for other education opportunities.

The Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation recognizes the importance of supporting youth in agriculture and their goals of advanced education. The scholarship program is one of the ways that the Foundation intends to support youth and the future of the livestock industry.

Please go online to www.simmentalfoundation.com to find the current application form that can be used for all three of the scholarships for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Eligible applications will first be considered for the Friends of Canadian Simmental, then those remaining for the Dr. Dixon and the Trevor Vance Memorial scholarships.
