At twenty years of age, this one hundred and twenty-five pound bit of dynamite and energy, has accomplished and achieved more in her junior years than most will in their entire lifetime. Why?.... genetics, environment and breeding! Samantha Rimke, the new President of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association, is the fourth generation of passion and leadership in the agricultural industry and Hereford breed. Ownership of her first purebred Hereford heifer was merely days after Samantha was born, as Oma and Opa Rimke proudly gifted their new granddaughter with JAD 22C Cinderella 7F sired

by MAR A 23 Rico 22C. The great strength of this family tree stems back to Samantha’s great grand-parents, Everett and Anna Batho. As most families in that era Everett worked with his father on a mixed farm in Minnedosa, Manitoba. Everett’s education was minimal, but fixed that, as Anna was a school teacher were her married in 1934. They raised a family of four... three daughters; Dorcas Ann, Helen and Louise and son Ron, who would lead the next generation.

Batho’s first Hereford was purchased in 1942 and the family moved to Oak Lake a decade later in 1952 adapting to a greater ranching environment. Polled Herefords were introduced the following year. By 1955, the Bathos were not only showing cattle at the Manitoba Winter Fair in nearby Brandon; they were taking the boxcar ride to the Toronto Royal Winter Fair where they achieved success in both the show and sale ring. In 1956, they exhibited the Reserve Crossbred Steer at the show.

Everett Batho along with fellow Hereford breeders Frank Hay and Donn Mitchell co-founded the Manitoba Beef Cattle Performance Association which we know as the Douglas Bull Test Station. Batho Farms has participated every year and is the only consignor to do so. In 1979, 42 of the 100 plus bulls entered were owned by Batho Farms Ltd. or sired by a BFL bull. Everett served as a director of the Manitoba Hereford Association and 10 years as director of the Douglas Bull Test Station while Anna was Secretary-treasurer of the Pioneer Polled Hereford Club. For their leadership and dedication Everett and Anna were inducted into the Canadian Hereford Association Honor Roll in 1993.

It’s summer time again and for me, that means back on the road touring herds and selecting cattle for fall female sales. This summer is a total opposite to last year when it comes to weather.

Ontario East which is normally lush and green is much dryer than normal. Recent rains have helped in many areas, however, more is needed to get pastures growing again. In the west it is much greener than a year ago, many of the hardest hit drought areas last summer are receiving ample moisture this year, restocking grass and feed supplies. Hay is trading at half the price or less of last year at this time. We all know calves are not going to be as high as they were last fall, however, they will still be quite strong. I have talked to producers who have had offers on their calves, six hundred pound steers are fetching bids of $2.00 and higher. If you think back three years, $2.00 calves were the dream, we never saw $2.00 calves, we shot right passed and went to the $3.00 range and higher, which was great but not sustainable long term. If calves settle back to the level we were dreaming of not so long ago and are sustainable it puts the business in a very good position. There is still a great deal to be optimistic about and many factors that could still push these calves a little higher than we think. Feed costs will be much lower than a year ago, not only is roughage more readily available and 50% cheaper than last year, there is potential for a bumper crop in the western grain belt. The government and industry leaders in grain handling and transportation are already concerned about the potential glut of grain in the system which could result in a backlog similar to three years ago, which means producers needing to sell grain to sustain cash flow will look to move it into the feed market.

The Canadian dollar continues to struggle against the greenback which has always been positive for the Canadian calf market. A recent report from the USDA also indicates cattle on feed numbers in the US are significantly lower than earlier reported, all these factors can have a very positive effect on the calf market.

The other thing I do in the summer while being on the road is attend junior shows. Let me tell you our business will be in good hands in the future. Both purebred and commercially, today’s juniors are extremely talented. They are very well spoken, knowledgeable

about the cattle business and the world and have amazing abilities to present and display livestock to the public. I have actually caught myself standing in awe of some of our Canadian juniors. I believe the junior programs are as strong as they have ever been and we have more kids than ever passionate about the business , planning to not only stay involved in the cattle business but already plan to be leaders in the industry. Hats off to the organizers, the volunteers and the sponsors of our junior programs. Never before have we had so many young people coming up in the business with the honed skills to run, promote the business and the product we produce...

Which has also never been more important than it is right now?

The beef industry as a whole has not done nearly enough to tell our story and connect with the young consumers of today. Our story is the “Greenest”, most wholesome of all our protein competitors, unfortunately, we know it but most consumers do not. We need to promote what great stewards of the land and environment beef producers are and how our animals are produced “free range” their entire life. Our produce is safe, nutritious and delicious, that is what every young consumer needs to see. I truly feel that our current crop of juniors will be better prepared and able to get the message out than any other. It is hard for us who see cows out calving, grazing and producing our product so wholesomely every day to grasp that not everyone realizes it. However, the disconnect between rural and urban is huge and only getting greater. I recently heard a story that totally shocked me. A girl who grew up on a mixed farm and was involved in every aspect of farm life sent her eight and ten-year-old kids back to the farm for a vacation.

The mother who had grown up there had worked in the garden, fed cows, hogs, chickens and drove a tractor when needed, went to university and stayed in the city. When her children, who are only one generation removed from the farm, went to stay with their grandparents for the first time on the farm, were amazed when they found something growing in the yard that looked just like a cucumber...you don’t think we have a disconnect? We all need to tell our story and more importantly, help prepare our youth to communicate with those of their same age to narrow the gap between rural and urban...fact and fiction.

This article is really a continuation of two previous articles, Breeding Bull Management Summer 2009 and Tips on Managing the Newly Purchased Bull Spring 2015. In the 2015 article I wrote that the two main causes of declines in semen quality were heat and stress. By far the most common cause of heat is fat in the neck of the scrotum. Fever, local inflammation, hernias and extremely hot weather are much less prevalent. Feeding high energy diets from pre-weaning up to the yearling stage doesn’t appear to result in as much scrotal fat accumulation compared with feeding similar diets after 16 to 18 months of age. Breed and genetic line probably influence where and how fat is laid down as much as anything. British breeds, or British breed-based cattle; particularly, Herefords and Speckle Park are more prone to scrotal fat accumulation. Angus accumulate fat in the scrotal neck and also under the skin of the entire scrotum causing the testicles to look plump with almost no scrotal neck. The temptation to overfatten bulls for sale as two-year olds is the root cause of many problems - obesity has also been linked to poor sex drive, lameness and premature culling.

Advantages assumed by buying a two-year old over a yearling bull can easily be lost due to overfeeding.

Stressors associated with increases in sperm abnormalities have to be of at least 3 or 4 day duration. Persistent pain from lameness or fighting injuries, bad weather, or perhaps dehorning have all been demonstrated to cause substantial declines in the proportion of normal sperm due to stress. The appearance of sperm exhibiting the distal midpiece reflex appear first and may be the only abnormality in cases of mild, short-lived stressors. Sperm exhibiting the distal midpiece reflexes can appear in substantial numbers and almost completely disappear within as short as a 3 week window.

More severe or long-standing stressful events will result in the appearance of different sperm defects arriving in the sperm picture in a sequence dictated by where the defect occurred in the sperm production process. Very long standing stressors such as a bad foot rot continue to affect many stages along the sperm production process; therefore, a number of different sperm defects will be present; for example: distal midpiece reflexes; proximal droplets; pyriform heads and nuclear vacuoles.

Other causes of poor sperm morphology include genetics, toxins, season, puberty and nutrition.

There are a few inherited sperm defects such as the Dag defect and the Tail Stump defect where high numbers of sperm are affected and a genetic link has been proven. Fortunately these are relatively rare. For many other defects a genetic basis has been proposed, but not substantiated. Complicated modes of inheritance and variable expression of the defect are a large part of the reason that a genetic link remains suspected at best. For instance,several of the abnormal sperm morphologies that are suspected of being heritable when in large numbers, may also appear in small to moderate numbers usually with other sperm defects as a result of some other disturbance of sperm production. The

temptation to point fingers at the breeding program, therefore, should not be your first response.

Puberty requires a few to several months to be completed. The onset of puberty is marked by a low sperm concentration and a high proportion of abnormal sperm. Once sexual maturity has been achieved the bull is able to produce a concentrated semen sample and should have greater than 70% morphologically normal sperm. At the onset of puberty there are a variety of sperm abnormalities present including abnormal head shapes, tightly coiled midpieces and proximal droplets. As puberty progresses proximal droplets become the most prevalent abnormality. Proportions of proximal droplets can be as high as 30, 40, 50, or even 60%; usually with a smattering of other defects. By and large, the pubertal sperm picture is the reason for the Decision Deferred category on the Western Canadian Association of Bovine Practitioners (WCABP) breeding soundness evaluation form. This classification implies that the bull will likely have a Satisfactory classification soon, but is not Satisfactory on the day of the test. A Decision Deferred classification doesn’t seem as final as an Unsatisfactory, “the bull is no good”, classification. Proportions of proximal droplets can decline rather quickly within 3 weeks to a month, so retesting in due time is recommended. Sperm with the proximal droplet are not capable of fertilization and it appears that when there are large numbers of proximal droplets even the normal appearing sperm have poor fertilizing potential. Using a bull with high numbers of proximal droplets for breeding has been proven to result in low conception rates. Puberty and scrotal circumference are closely related with bigger testicles being predictive of puberty beginning at an earlier age. Bulls with large scrotal circumferences and pubertal sperm pictures, i.e. proximal droplets, likely are experiencing prolonged puberty. A pubertal sperm picture is not a “rusty load”. The “rusty load” term was coined for bulls that accumulate, or build up sperm in their tubular duct system. These are usually older bulls that continue to store sperm during periods of sexual rest rather than clean out old sperm daily with urination. The typical scenario at semen testing is a large volume of semen (30 plus mL), containing lots of dead sperm with detached heads.

Although cattle can breed year round there is a seasonal effect on sperm production which is especially evident in northern climates. More bulls will fail their semen test during the winter and early spring months than during the late spring and summer. This can be problematic for those hosting early spring bull sales. Seasonality may also be confounded by nutrition – feed quality in the winter often falls short of lush summer pasture. Seasonal/ nutritional sperm pictures usually present with a smattering of defects with some bulls being more affected than others.

There is a great deal of uncertainty surrounding the calf market this fall, feedlots (who were maybe a tad overzealous last fall) are experiencing record losses which are eating up record profits made just a couple of years ago. They are being very cautious, maybe a little over cautious when placing bids on calves this fall, and who can blame them. The prices being offered today are significantly less than last year but still not a total disaster and with the abundance of feed in Western Canada the cost of keeping a cow around will be significantly less, which will help narrow the gap in net profit compared to last year, when high priced hay was purchased and trucked a long way.

One thing that is very noticeable this fall (on the calf market) is heavier calves, 600 pounds and over, are netting significantly more dollars in producer pockets, versus some years when there was not a big difference in net dollars per head over most weight categories. If this trend continues and I believe it will, (it only makes sense) then there is definitely more incentive to be a better manager and use superior genetics. Heavier, high quality calves have always paid a premium but in today’s market it is even more evident than ever. The first and most influential thing you can do as a commercial producer in improving quality and weaning weight is purchase a superior bull.

Your herd bull has 50% genetic makeup of every calf he sires while the cow only contributes to her individual calf.

Then you need to implement the best management and animal husbandry practices possible enabling those calves to reach their genetic potential.

For those of you who are seed stock producers, you have an obligation to provide the best possible bulls for the commercial industry. The beef cattle industry needs breeders and not multipliers, if you are just a multiplier of below average cattle with a registration paper, then you are actually of no value to the beef industry, actually you are a detriment. Everyone has the right to be a purebred breeder if they so choose, but with that right comes the responsibility of supplying a sound breeding bull that will enhance the genetics the commercial producer already has. As purebred breeders we must continue to strive to breed cattle that excel in all desirable traits.We have more tools at our disposal than ever before to help evaluate and expedite progress in these regards.

There is one other thing I feel, that we must get more vigilant on, both purebred and commercial breeders must meld together as an industry. We need to tell our story, beef production is more wholesome, natural and “ green� than any other protein production. However people in cities are not getting that message and even some of our retailers are putting a negative spin on the way we produce beef in this country, for their own short term gain. Somehow we need to band together; breed associations, cattle feeders, stockgrowers, cow/calf producers and packers supporting and funding national advertising educating consumers.

Our advisories are getting more vigilant and better funded all the time; chicken and pork producers are not who we need to worry about...anti farm groups are.

The Sam Rimke Story

...the old proverb, "the apple does not fall far from the tree," best exemplifies this young leader. At twenty years of age, this one hundred and twenty-five pound bit of dynamite and energy has accomplished and achieved more in her junior years than most will in their entire lifetime. Why?.... genetics, environment and breeding! Samantha Rimke, the new President of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association, is the fourth generation of passion and leadership in the agricultural industry and Hereford breed. Ownership of her first purebred Hereford heifer was merely days after Samantha was born, as Oma and Opa Rimke proudly gifted their new granddaughter with JAD 22C Cinderella 7F sired

by MAR A 23 Rico 22C. The great strength of this family tree stems back to Samantha’s great grand-parents, Everett and Anna Batho. As most families in that era, Everett worked with his father on a mixed farm in Minnedosa, Manitoba. Everett’s education was minimal, but fixed that, as Anna was a school teacher and they were married in 1934. They raised a family of four... three daughters; Dorcas Ann, Helen and Louise and son Ron, who would lead the next generation.

Batho’s first Hereford was purchased in 1942 and the family moved to Oak Lake a decade later, in 1952, adapting to a greater ranching environment. Polled Herefords were introduced the following year. By 1955, the Bathos were not only showing cattle at the Manitoba Winter Fair in nearby Brandon; they were taking the boxcar ride to the Toronto Royal Winter Fair where they achieved success in both the show and sale ring. In 1956, they exhibited the Reserve Crossbred Steer at the show.

Great Grandpa Everett

Everett Batho, along with fellow Hereford breeders Frank Hay and Donn Mitchell, co-founded the Manitoba Beef Cattle Performance Association which we know as the Douglas Bull Test Station. Batho Farms has participated every year and is the only consignor to do so. In 1979, 42 of the 100 plus bulls entered were owned by Batho Farms Ltd. or sired by a BFL bull. Everett served as a director of the Manitoba Hereford Association and 10 years as director of the Douglas Bull Test Station while Anna was Secretary-treasurer of the Pioneer Polled Hereford Club. For their leadership and dedication Everett and Anna were inducted into the Canadian Hereford Association Honor Roll in 1993.

Everett’s only son, Ron, was born in 1936 and spent much of his early youth on the family farm and was active in the Oak Lake Boys and Girls Calf Club which later became the Oak Lake 4-H Club. He graduated high school in 1954 and two years later, he received his Diploma in Agriculture at the University of Manitoba then returned to his passion of ranching and livestock. Along with his father, they formed Batho Farms Ltd. in 1967 with

the herd prefix BFL. Fresh out of university, he exhibited the Reserve Champion Bull of all breeds in 1955, the champion Pen of Five Steers in 1956 at the Manitoba Winter Fair and Grand Champion Female at the Manitoba Provincial Exhibition. In the early 60’s, Ron got involved with bull test stations and performance testing as the BFL prefix set records for gain and weight per day of age in the Hereford Breed at Douglas. He served as director then as president of Douglas Bull Test Station from 1973 to 1976. His involvement did not end at Douglas, as Ron built, developed and manages the Southwest Bull Development Centre at Batho Farms to this very day.

Batho Farms Ltd. was awarded Premier Purebred Beef Producer in 1984 by the Manitoba Minister of Agriculture, named to the Seedstock Producer Honor Roll of Excellence by the Beef Improvement Federation in 1985 and awarded the Manitoba Conservation Farm Family distinction in 1996. In addition to Douglas, Ron’s voluntary involvement has been overwhelming. He has served on boards of the Manitoba Hereford Association, the Canadian Hereford Association, Oak Lake Ag Society and endless community associations and events.

The Manitoba Ag Grads Association awarded Ron the Certificate of Merit for outstanding accomplishments in the agricultural industry.

For his great leadership, Ron Batho was inducted into the Canadian Hereford Association’s Honor Roll in 2007.

In October 1966, Ron married Sheila Webber and they have two daughters, Michelle and Tracy. Both girls were involved with livestock and 4-H throughout their youth. Michelle married Albert Rimke and they represent the third generation of the Batho heritage. Sheila lost a battle to cancer in 1982 but Ron met Kathy Navid and they were married in 1985. Her own herd (KDB Ranching) runs with Batho and AM Ranching herds at Oak Lake.

Michelle Batho has a passion for Hereford cattle having being involved with the family

farm, through 4-H and Four Generations of Family the Canadian Junior Hereford Association. Even though they were acquainted through the Hereford involvement, Michelle and Albert officially met in 1987 at the National Junior Hereford Show, in Regina, hosted by the Province of Saskatchewan. Albert Rimke is one of three sons of German Immigrants, Hubert and Gisela Rimke who lived in Rorketon, Manitoba, a small village near Dauphin. After immigrating, Hubert worked for Frank Guilford, Double U Polled Herefords, Clearwater, Manitoba in the early 50’s. On leaving Guilfords, he told Frank he would be back when he bought a farm; shortly after that in the early 60’s, Hubert went back to Guilfords and purchased his first 10 Polled Hereford females.

The farm at Rorketon was only large enough to support one family, so after Michelle and Albert got married in 1990, they were invited to join the BFL operation running their own herd under their AM Ranching prefix. It was a great move for the couple as they would maintain the family tradition for the next generation. Albert achieved his diploma in Agriculture Production from Olds College, Olds, Alberta and Michelle achieved her diploma at Assiniboine Community College, Brandon.

For the past two and a hlaf decades, Albert Rimke has been leader of the Oak Lake 4-H Beef Club, following along in his father-in-law’s footsteps, and a Manitoba Adult Advisor for the CJHA for over a decade. He has served as a director for the Canadian Hereford Association for six year’s, is the current year Show Committee Chair and the Canadian Hereford Association Vice President elect.

Albert and Michelle were both members of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association (CJHA). Albert first exhibited at the 1980 Bonanza in Brandon. Michelle was a delegate for the CJHA for five years and a co-chairperson for the 1988 Bonanza, then the couple co-chaired the 2006 and 2013 Bonanzas. In 2006, Albert, Michelle, Jay, Samantha and Levi were awarded the Outstanding Young Farmers Award for Manitoba. At the Ontario Bonanza in Lindsay in 2014, Albert and Michelle were awarded their most coveted honor ..... "Friends of Bonanza."

They have three children..... all members or past members of the CJHA. The oldest is Jay who is 23 and graduated from Olds College in 2015 with a diploma in Agricultural Management. Like his forefathers, he returned to the ranch helping his father and grandfather and recently purchased 320 acres of pasture land near the ranch as he expands the next new generation.

In 2014, Jay was inducted into the CJHA Honor Roll. His brother, Levi is 17 and is in his last year at Virden Collegiate Institute...very active on the farm before and after class and spends many hours in the show barn.

Samantha, 20, has been chosen to lead the Canadian Junior Hereford Association for the next term. She is currently attending the University of Saskatchewan studying for a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture with a major in Environmental Science and a minor in Animal Science and works part time for T Bar C Cattle Company as studies allow. Upon completion of studies, she plans to return to her cow herd of ten, her province and hometown community and work in developing agriculture for generations to follow.

She showed her first calf at the age of three, then at the age of four joined the Oak Lake 4-H Pee Wee Club. At the age of eight, she joined the senior club and showed until the age of nineteen. To date, Samantha has shown cattle through the CJHA at fourteen Bonanzas in eight provinces in Canada and participated at the Junior National Hereford Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. She has served on the CJHA board of directors for four years and was inducted into the CJHA Honor Roll in 2016. Samantha followed in her mother’s footsteps, co-chairing Bonanza 2013 in Brandon.

At the 2016 Bonanza, she was awarded the Major Jay Fox Ambassador award in addition to the Keith Gilmore Foundation Hereford Youth Scholarship. In 2009, she captured the Junior Aggregate award at the Princeton Bonanza hosted by Copper Creek Ranch, in the province of British Columbia. Sam was the recipient of the CJHA "Future of the Breed" scholarship in 2014 and completed her school year with honors from 2006 to 2014. In 2015, she won the Grant Moffat Showmanship Trophy for All Breeds Showman at the Manitoba Ag-Ex..... and in addition to livestock and academic awards, Samantha was a qualifier at the High School Curling Provincial playoffs from 2011 to 2014, invited to participate in the SunLife Junior Curling Challenge and was the youngest participant at the 2015 T Bar Invitational Golf Tournament.

Since the average time span of a purebred breeder is seven years, it is quite simple to understand how a breeding program has been so strong and successful for four generations.....passion.....leadership.....dedication!

Pregnancy Checking: Sooner is Better than Later!

Biography: Dr. Colin Palmer is an Associate Professor of Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from Nova Scotia, Dr. Palmer worked in mixed practices in Ontario and British Columbia and has owned/operated a practice in Saskatchewan. Dr. Palmer along with his wife Kim and children Lauren, Emily and Carter run a herd of purebred Red Angus cattle under the KC Cattle Co. name.

In my last article, Revisiting Cow Herd Performance, I discussed a recommended production goal of 60% of the cow herd calving in the first 3 weeks of the calving season; however, less than half of the herds participating in the 2014 Western Canadian Cow-Calf Survey reported achieving this goal. The most common explanation for falling short of this goal is that there are too many cows not cycling at the beginning of the breeding season. Inadequate pre- and post-calving nutrition, insufficient mineral supplementation, genetics, etc. may be blamed, but it is rarely a single breeding season phenomenon. I will step out on a flimsy limb and say that every reason for late calving cows can be lumped into the herd management basket. Why? Cows that calved late last season will undoubtedly calve late next season. Bull power; nutrition, including minerals and vitamins; abortion, sexually transmitted disease; twins; illness; cow age; genetics, and stress comprise a strong list of possible reasons why there may be late calving cows in a herd, but management is the reason they will remain in the herd. In the best case scenario late calving cows, if otherwise reproductively sound, can usually only be caught up by 4 to 5 weeks per season because their reproductive system needs at least 40 to 50 days to become functional again after calving. So for managers there are really only 3 choices when dealing with an open or late calving cow: 1) keep her; 2) cull her; and 3) move her to another calving season i.e. fall or next year. Any one of these choices might be plausible in certain circumstances, but generally speaking the most economically sound decision is to cull her.

been hovering around $100 cwt for some time now, while the price of replacement females has softened considerably. The costs of maintaining an open, late calving or early calving cow are the same whether she produces a calf or not, but there is a big difference in the profit per cow.

Regardless of when you wean or when you ship your calves, the early calving cows will have bigger calves. Even when the price slide is factored in heavier calves bring more money which translates to more profit per cow.

Pregnancy checking makes good economic sense for all operations. Based on personal experience, watching for potential open cows to display heat will probably only expose half of them at most with many of these not showing up until they have consumed several months of good winter feed. Late calvers will not be identified until well ‌ it is too late! Early pregnancy checking say at, or even before, weaning is more effective as it is easier to stage the pregnancy. After 5 or 6 months of gestation, it is easy to be off by at least a month or even worse. Ultrasound does not offer any advantage at this point. The most ideal scenario is to palpate cows that are 3 to 4 months pregnant with producers wanting those less than 2 months or less and obviously open specifically identified.

Open cows can be culled immediately or fed to improve condition – you decide. The late calvers can be sold as opens or even sold as bred cows to operations looking for cows to calve in this window. Excess feed can be fed to more productive animals or sold. I won’t tell you what to do with extra money.

ith the advent of increasing consciousness in animal welfare, any products which can relieve pain, decrease inflammation and/or reduce fever are a welcome addition to the repertoire we as veterinarians have to treat clinical disease, injury, lameness and toxemias. They also may have a place in controlling post surgical pain or inflammation which might occur with castration, branding (including freeze branding) or dehorning of cattle. With pain, inflammation, or fever, when controlled there is less stress, appetite is maintained, and in many cases calves recover more quickly and are less likely to contract conditions such as respiratory disease.

All non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are prescription drugs, so they must be prescribed first by your veterinarian, and they may incorporate them into treatment protocols for the treatment of specific diseases on your farm. There are three main groups of NSAIDs. Flunixine, Banamine was the original and now there are many generic trade names for the same thing.

Ketoprofen, which is similar to human Ibuprofen, and has the trade name Anafen. The third type is Meloxicam, and the trade name Metacam. This product has a huge market for treating small animal arthritis primarily, (now generic meloxicams are marketed in small animals) and is the most recent one to be approved in large animals.

Meloxicam now comes in an oral form approved for use in cattle and has a pain control claim for castration.

Each of these products may be used for different reasons based on the veterinarian’s preference. Meloxicam comes in different formulations and can be given either intravenously, subcutaneously and now orally. The company that makes Banamine (Merck Animal Health) has also combined it together with an antibiotic fluorphenical in the same product calling it Resflor. They did research on this product and found very good recoveries with less scarred lungs in pneumonia cases. This was a result of decreasing the inflammation in the lungs, the recovery was quicker, so the antibiotic could work better and the death loss and percentage of chronics was in turn reduced.

Banamine by itself is only approved for intravenous usage, but in the antibiotic combination called Resflor it can be given subcutaneously.

It shows that one good shot of an anti-inflammatory really helps economically and there is often no need to repeat the treatment. Check with your veterinarian, but the addition of NSAIDs to the mix when treating pneumonias will often help.

The company that makes Metacam (Boehringer Ingelheim) looked at using the product on clinically affected, scouring calves along with the standard scour treatments such as electrolytes. They found that both the calves’ appetite was better, they recovered on average quicker, plus the calves were more active. The non-metacam treated calves weren’t near as content because of uneasiness, gas pains or pain in general. Thus, treated calves put more energy into getting better and recovered quicker. One must make sure the patients are properly hydrated and have good urine flow as in under hydrated calves, kidneys may be harmed. That is generally true for all NSAIDs.

Boehringer Ingelheim in another study, looked at the pain response from hot iron dehorning in young calves. While dehorning is becoming less and less necessary with the use of polled bulls in beef breeds, dehorning is still routine in young dairy calves and some strains of beef breeds (full French Charolais and Fleckvieh Simmental

are two examples). The beauty with modern technology, is that we can record pressure to elicit a pain response which were used in this study.

The pressure pushing down around the dehorning site was recorded, and the response was elicited with calves struggling or pulling back.

Behavior such as flicking of the ears, head shaking or head rubbing compared to the non-dehorned animals or dehorned animals without the metacam were looked at. These calves were done at the normal six to twelve week age and a significant reduction in pain responses were noted. Some were even given local anesthetic as well, but that wears off after a few hours and the metacam took over. The same principal applies to the dehorning as with the scouring calves; appetite will be maintained, calves will be less stressed and recover quicker, plus be less prone to get sick. This is a win-win situation and should return revenue to the producer, especially in light of the fact that the amount of product used is small in these young calves.

The newest product called Meloxicam Oral is manufactured

by Solvet out of Calgary. They actually have a pain claim for castration on their label for 56 hours that allows you to control pain in your calves until the worst time is over. Animal welfare is pretty much at the top of the list when it comes to the public’s vision of food production and food safety. Our recent Beef Code of Practice makes the use of NSAIDs mandatory with castrating large calves starting in 2016.

With castration, the push is to do it at a younger age with a painkiller of some type and most veterinarians are now recommending this for both knife and banding castrations at older ages. There are also other studies looking at lameness in the feedlot indicating lameness is significantly reduced in the feedlot with NSAIDs proving their place as painkillers. With the increase in hairy heel warts (strawberry footrot, bovine digital dermatitis) painkillers are imperative to use in these extremely painful situations along with the prescribed antibiotic.

In order to be adopted for routine procedures, producers need it effective, economical, easy to administer, long lasting and have no longer of a withdrawal period than most antibiotics it may be given with. These products definitely will fit the bill. Although they do cost money when using them for routine procedures on young calves the dose is small. There may be a feed formulation but administration by needle is still pretty easy.

I find new veterinarians who have grown up in the animal welfare culture, are more apt to use the Banamine, Metacam or Anafen for many other painful procedures which is a good thing. Procedures such as eye enucleations, caesarian sections, claw amputations or even prolapsed uterus’s or other exploratory surgeries do much better with the addition of an NSAIDs of that there is no doubt. With more approved products coming onto the market, competition has pushed the price down so they are more affordable, and can be used routinely in processing situations if your veterinarian prescribes them.

In the near future we will see more and more pain medication given to cattle and possibly administered in different ways other than with a needle. Although it does appease the animal welfare concerns, it also makes total economic sense and will return to the farmer both increased production, provide more animal welfare and hopefully less clinical disease or a quicker recovery from clinical disease. We as veterinarians just need to think about how it should fit into most of our treatment protocols and always keep the animal welfare concerns in the back of our minds.
