Helen Doll, 94, New Salem, ND, passed away March 4, 2019 at Elm Crest Manor, New Salem.

Helen had an extreme love for all her family & was generous to anyone she met. She held many roles – wife, mother to nine, grandmother, great-grandmother, auntie & great auntie – but she took great pride in all of them. In her early days, it was difficult keeping her away from her garden – an acre or two was nothing to her. She would even take her John Deere rototiller to help all the neighbors jump-start their gardening season. All her hard work yielded the largest surplus of canned fruit & vegetables in the county, which were used all year long & pulled out to accompany any one of the gourmet dinners she’d seemingly throw together. She loved being outside tending to her chickens, ducks & turkeys. When all of the above wasn’t keeping mom busy, you’d find her keeping busy with crocheting or sewing all the new grandbabies their first blankets, and was even part of a bowling league.

Helen was born July 21, 1924 in the St. Vincent area to Liberatus and Margaret (Steckler) Zander. She attended rural school through the eighth grade and graduated from Mandan High School. Helen went on to teach at St. Vincent school. On January 21, 1946 she married Joseph D. Doll at St. Vincent Church. The couple made their home Northwest of Sweet Briar Dam. Together Helen and Joe farmed and ranched in the New Salem area for many years.

She was a member of St. Pius Catholic Church and the Homemaker’s Club.

She enjoyed her bowling league with her teammates and making crafts including sewing, crocheting and making jewelry. She was known to have one of the best gardens around. She canned much of her produce from that garden. Helen was an excellent cook. Her and Joe loved traveling with their special friends Delbert and Irene Krumwedie.

Many trips were made to look at cattle through the years and when she was unable to accompany, she would graciously stay home to hold down the fort. Even though other obligations kept her from every single cattle trip, she was the reason we started a Simmental herd. After attending the first meeting in Bismarck, she came home & told dad, “This is the next breed we’re going to start.” She even did our early checks for us during calving on her way to her morning milking.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Bonita (James) Pazdernik, New Salem; sons, Ronald (June), Kevin (Mary), Charles (Pam), Harlan (Jodie) David (Donna) all of New Salem, Douglas (Deb), Mandan; 30 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; sons in-law, Darrell Kuhn and Keith Pagel; sisters, Monica Yantzer, Mary Knoll, both of Bismarck, Kathleen (John) Brilz, San Pablo CA; brother, James, Bismarck; and a sister in-law, Beatrice Zander, Mandan.

Mom put her whole heart into everything that crossed her path, and we all miss her dearly every day.

take so much pride in being part of the Holstein Wrestling team, just like their grandpa, uncles & great-uncles. They love being outside working with the uncles on the farm & are never afraid to ask lots of questions. Austynn (5) is a kindergartner & learning & growing way too fast. She still sits and commentates the bull sales I watch & crawls into my lap with her bull-buying opinions whenever she sees a sale book in my hands. Casey & Bobbie are still living in domestic bliss with their two pups, Julian & Marley – and Joey, who is still actively wife shopping, wink, wink. Casey has continued his role as head foreman with Bullinger Tree Services & Bobbie is still keeping NoDak Mutual running. Wesley & Amy decided to come back from Maui, albeit our attempts in talking them into purchase property so we can visit whenever we wish. Wesley is still climbing poles as a lineman for MDU, and Amy is in year two with Sanford. They purchased a beautiful home just north of Mandan & live with their two dogs, Nala & Ryker, who love all the extra space to store their collections of stuffed animals.

This year we have a list of very powerful set of 104 Charolais bulls with some of the best pedigrees around. Same with the Simmentals, 66 very powerful bulls in the sale. With some very different pedigrees. 50% reds, 50% blacks.

The bulls have been fed a TMR ration consisting of grain, corn silage, mixed chopped hay and distillers. We would like to thank J & L Nutritional Consulting from Perham, Minnesota for all his help with the rations. He will be at the sale and be will available to answer questions, as will Harlan, David, and myself.

The The cattle will be at the ranch until the Thurday before the Doll's sale. Anyone is welcome to stop in and walk through them. The ranch is located west of Mandan on I-94 go to exit 136 then travel 2 miles north and one west.

Last year, well if your 2019 is as bad as it has been for us, we just don’t want to talk about it. Good rains, well to much at times here. Did get almost everything done before 2020. We will have enough feed for the cattle but some of it is not the best. Hope you also have enough feed for your cattle.

Harlan & Jodie have two girls and a new son! Hailie & Thomas were married this past October. She is a RN at Bismarck Surgical Associates & Thomas is a welder at the refinery in Mandan. They make their home in Bismarck. Jacie is in her 3rd year of college at UND. She is in the social work program and loves the work she is doing….Grand Forks, not so much. She will be graduating in May of 2020 and fingers crossed she’ll be back in the Bismarck area! As for Harley and I, not much has changed. We’re just another year older & not much wiser! But, we are so grateful for our health and we’re excited to see what the future has instore for us!

David and Donna’s two girls have had a busy year! Katie graduated from college with her degree in Business Administration and Human Resources Management and is currently working at Starion Bank in Mandan as a personal banker. Krysten is engaged to Jake Faehnrich and are planning a June wedding. We couldn’t be happier or more excited for them. Krysten is still working at Liberty Elementary and Jake works for Bower’s Excavating in Mandan. As for David and Donna, life revolves around faith, family and work.

We are so thankful that our kids are close, and we get to spend time together making memories.

Charles & Pam have had a year full of enjoying grandbabies, with a brand new addition to the herd in July. Ty & Blaisey welcomed Everly Rae Doll into the family on July 25th, and she fits right in. Ty is still working fulltime on the ranch, along with Joseph. If asked directly, they’ll tell you they love working alongside & learning from Harlan, Dave & myself. Indirectly might get you their honest thoughts. Blaisey is still with Sanford Health & has taken quite a shining to her new ‘mom’ role. Angela switched companies, but is essentially doing the same thing in marketing & advertising. She still does her photography & freelance design on the side. Braxton (8) is a third-grader & loves wrestling with his brother, Truett (7), who is a first-grader. They

The AICA Terminal Sire Index (TSI) utilizes economic and management descriptions of your ranching operation, along with EPD on available Charolais bulls to assist in identifying the most profitable sires for your unique operation. Using economic selection index theory, this tool will generate dollar indexes per terminal progeny produced on bulls in the AICA database, ranking them for profit potential given the inputs you provide. The dollar indexes are to be interpreted much like single trait EPD. For example, if sire A’s index is $191.66 and sire B’s index is $200.00, then we would expect Sire B’s offspring to average $8.34 more net return ($200.00 $191.66) than sire A’s offspring.

Sire Listing Criteria

For bulls to have a Terminal Sire Index they must be registered with the American-International Charolais Association. Each bull must also have an EPD for BWT, WWT, YWT, MAT, REA, HCW, MARB and FAT.

Progeny Proven Sires

Must have sired at least 3 calves with performance data reported to AICA within the last two years and an accuracy value of .30 or higher.

Terminal Sire Index (TSI)

The AICA Terminal Sire Index (TSI) is a formal method of combing Expected Progeny Differences (EPD) - BWT, WWT, YWT, REA, HCW, MARB and FAT - into one single value on which to base selection decisions. The TSI uses estimates of the genetic relationships between traits with an economic default value based on three year rolling USDA data.
