From the desk at T Bar... Those of us who have been in Angus circles for the past few decades know of or have met this Scottish gentleman, Doug Robertson. A powerful and true promoter of the breed and Angus cattle in general. The Coldstream herd is very unique; although it is relatively small in numbers, it is big on powerful performance cattle; many built up through the process of embryo transfer. What makes this herd extremely unique, is that it is based on four cow family lines - the Blackbirds - the Lady Heathers - the Tidy Bees and the Annies. Doug Robertson has maintained his roots back to the “old country” of the British Isles, marketing embryos to breeders in the United Kingdom making the Coldstream program a source for superior Canadian Angus genetics. Through all the embryo work, Doug has moved the herd and program forward, always building on the genetics of the top females in each cow family. Since the Coldstream land base is limited, the Robertsons could only maintain the females that they liked and those which performed well for them. Doug likes cattle with capacity...believing that eventually everything must “sell by the pound,” therefore the females in this sale offering are high volume, broody females which are highly fertile. In addition to the powerful group of breeding females, the dispersal offers a large group of embryos out of the predictable donor cows which are destined to start new cow families for their new owners. We welcome everyone to the Complete Dispersal of Coldstream Angus on December 11, 2012 at the Olds Agricultural Society Grounds. As Sir Harry Lauder become famous with the song, “Keep Right on to the End of the Road,” it is time to make some changes...retire. While one reflects over the years, breeding cattle is an adventure. There are surprises and disappointments, but it is very rewarding. Coldstream Angus operated on a limited budget and numbers, so selection was very important. We never followed fads but bred cattle that had soundness (feet and udders), length, size and substance; remember calves still sell by weight. I remember the 1950's and 1960's…let’s not go back there. Coldstream genetics have been successful in the UK (Scotland, England and Ireland) and may be the only Canadian to have bred a Perth Champion from an embryo. Progeny resulting from Coldstream embryos have brought between 24,000 and 28,000 pounds over there as well. The Calgary Bull Sale has been our main bull sale for many years and we were very successful. For the last two years, we were guest consignor with P/H Ranching at Innisfail (thank you Duane and Corrine). The top seller in 2011 sold for $12,250 to Jim Bleakley, Bashaw; top seller in 2012 sold for $11,500 to Grant Schlekewy, St. Walburg, with an average of $5,600 on the yearlings. I recommend you look closely at the pedigrees, performance and soundness of the cattle offered: the Lady Heathers (prides), Blackbirds, Tidy Bees and Miss Annies; the Paradox daughters and calves at side by Scotty 174X, whose dam is foundation quality. The choice is yours, as everything sells. We have enjoyed the Angus breed and the people for many years. My grandfather showed the Supreme Champion at the Royal Highland in Scotland in 1932. I had the honor and privilege to judge many shows, including the First National and the Black Beauty Bonanza in the UK. 4-H was very rewarding for John, Heather and Bonnie. The friendship and hospitality is everywhere. I would like to thank many people from over the years, especially Bev and our family. (John we couldn't have done it without you). Marvin and Eldon Knight, where I kept my cows in the early days; Roger Davis and D.R.I. and our many customers, neighbors and visitors. One hopes to have added successfully to the Angus Breed. The Coldstream Infulence Coldstream breeding has had a phenomenal influence on the Angus breed in the UK and Ireland over the past 20 years and has played a major role in the resurgence of the breed in its homeland. The Lady Heather, Blackbird and Tidy Bee families from Coldstream are now to be found in many of the leading herds, notably Blelack (Neil and Graeme Massie), Wedderlie (John and Marion Tilson) and Penguin (Bob Lane), and have produced a string of champions and top prices at the leading shows and at the bull sales at Stirling (formerly Perth). At Blelack, the original import, Coldstream Lady Heather 16W, produced Lord Horatio P11 of Blelack, supreme champion at Perth in 1993, when sold for 11,000gns ($18,500) to the Wedderlie, Haymount and Tofts herds, where he sired a succession of champion bulls and some really great cows. The success of Lord Horatio resulted in Wedderlie investing heavily in Coldstream genetics which are now to be found in most of the 250 cows in the herd, including embryos from Knights Blackbird 9Y, Coldstream Tidy Bee 10X (ET sisters also went to theBlelack and Penguin herds), Coldstream Blackbird 9G and Coldstream Bonnie Lass 29Y. Tidy Bee produced two sons retained as herd sires as well as Tidy Baron, senior champion at Perth when sold to the Schivas herd at 13,000gns ($21,120) while Blackbird 9Y’s sons, included WedderlieBlackmark, sire of WedderlieNetmark, junior champion at Perth when sold for 25,000gns ($41,750) to Rawburn, and Wedderlie Blackadder, sire of Wedderlie Kansas, intermediate champion at Perth when sold for 10,000gns ($16,320) and recently repurchased as a herd sire. There is an impressive full sister of Blackadder in the Coldstream herd and a full brother, Blelack Blacksmith, was retained as a herd sire at Blelack before beingsold to the Jerusalem herd. His sons at Blelack included Blelack Prince Consort, sold for 13,000gns ($21,120) and BlelackEllerman B531, supreme champion at Perth in February, 2004, when sold to Ballathie for the top price of 28,000gns ($46,626). Blackbird 9G’s progeny included two super cows, WedderlieBlackmama 244, dam of Wedderlie Black Boss, retained as a herd sire, and WedderlieBlackdown, supreme champion at Perth when sold for 22,000gns ($36,950). Also a bull brother, Wedderlie Black Knight, repurchased as a herd sire because of the quality of his female progeny. Mr and Mrs Tilson’s daughter, Wanda, received five embryos from Coldstream Paradox, ex Coldstream Lady Heather 42J,as a wedding present and the five resulting calves include Ellin Lord Hardy, retained as a herd sire. There is also a good full sister at Coldstream. In addition to Lord Horatio, the Lady Heather family at Blelack has produced several champions at the Perth bull sales, including Lord Hesketh T23 of Blelack, senior champion in February, 2006, when sold to The Moss for 10,000gns ($16,650), Lord Harry T71 of Blelack, first prize at the same sale when sold for 6500gns ($10,820) for AI, Blelack Lord Harry A370, senior and reserve champion in October, 2003, Blelack Lord Hildalgo A234, reserve intermediate champion in October, 2002, when sold for 7500gns ($12,490) to Tofts, Blelack Lord Hornblower Z494, senior champion in February 2002, Blelack Lord Hornblower A243, supreme champion in February, 2003, and retained as a herd sire, and Blelack Lord Hildalgo H972, supreme champion in February, 2010, when sold for 25,000gns ($41,750) to Logie Lord Hildago H972’s dam, Blelack Lady Heather D977, sold for 7000gns ($11,700) at eight years of age at the recent Blelack sale and is also the dam of Blelack Lady Heather J169, sold as a heifer for the top price of 15,000gns ($24,980) at the Best of Blacks in the Borders sale to the Weeton herd. D977’s full sister, Blelack Lady Heather W46, sold to the Jerusalem herd where she produced a supreme champion at the Royal Show, junior champion at the Royal Highland Show and supreme champion at the Great Yorkshire Show and a bull which was intermediate champion at Perth and sold for 7500gns ($12,450) to Tofts. Another daughter of D977, Blelack Lady Heather G768, considered as one of the best cows in the Blelack herd, also sold for 7000gns ($11.700) at the Blelack sale and her twin sister has been flushed with great success in the Friarstown herd in Ireland. A fantastic daughter has been retained at Blelack and a promising son will be sold next spring. As Graeme Massie commented in the Blelack sale catalogue: “If we could own a herd of cows that bred like Blelack Lady Heather D977, our life would be good!” Daughters of Coldstream Lady Heather 16W, Knights Blackbird 9Y and Coldstream Tidy Bee 10X have also had a huge influence in the Penguin herd where the Tidy Bee family in particular has been highly prolific. The foundation of the Tidy Bee family at Penguin was a Kruggerand 490 65G daughter of 10X selected for her length of body, natural shape and easy fleshing. Seven Tidy Bee cows have been retained in the herd and many bulls and heifers from embryo flushes have been sold privately over the years. A young bull, Penguin Tango Bay J376, a guest consignment at the Rosemead herd’s 75th anniversary sale last year, sold for the top price of 6500gns ($10,825) to the Grandon herd. Blackbird Family The Coldstream Blackbird Family ... was established with John’s purchase of Knights Blackbird 9Y from Marvin and Eldon Knight, Beiseker, Alberta. Blackbird 9Y is truly one of the breed’s finest foundation females. She was a very successful donor female producing thirty-five progeny in her life span. 9Y is responsible for our largest cow family through the daughters 27D, 9G, 68J and 63E whose daughter 53G is a prolific producer. In addition to the maternal strength of this great cow, she is the mother of Coldstream Forest Gump 62E, a son of G D A R Oscar 711, who was selected by Arda Farms, Jay Davis and Family, Acme, Alberta; it is also the dam of HF Just Cruisin 5C, a son of MVHF Dreamwalker 29A (Rito 2100 X Tibbie 20W) who was selected by Brooke Acres and R & F Farm, Ilderton, Ontario, and extensively used in Eastern Canada with nearly one hundred and sixty progeny; and his flush brother, HF Walk-On 14C, herd sire for Hamilton Farms, Reid’s Angus and Peak Dot Angus.
