As the situation of 2020 moved forward, and with no Agribition, we here at C&T along with our sale partners, made the difficult decision that if there was ever a year to take off from having a production sale, this was it. For us, we felt like it would be an opportunity to recharge the cow herd with young stock. We have a great cross section of bred females and heifer calves from all sires used. We haven’t disappeared though!! So Juniors, please think of us for Bonanza 2021 and ask some questions! These heifer calves are show material and would have been featured in the sale.

C&T Jigger 10F and Moscow Mule A Luxury Tax daughter sold to Gold Bar Livestock as a calf.

Reserve Champion Prospect Heifer Sired by One in the Chamber

As well we have clubbies for sale that would have gone to the CWA prospect sale. The steers are at home. The heifers went to the hills. All will be available once home and weaned.

Director’s Report

SHA

by Stephen Myer

Howdy everyone. I have to admit I feel a little shy since I haven’t been exposed to this many people in the last six months! It was a good summer for us, lots of time with the kids and our area was given optimal weather for haying and decent crop development. Saskatchewan had an early return of fall with twentysome low temperature records set at the end of the first week of September. From the reports I’ve heard, the farmers in the south have almost completed their harvests, while the farmers in the north are just nicely getting started. With the limitations of activities due to the pandemic, our Saskatchewan Herefords may not have been able to have the limelight, but the strength of the cattle is the same or better than ever. There are some upcoming opportunities to evaluate and enhance your genetics.

include on halter video and picture. Technology will allow this event to be evenly accessible to Canada versus the world. As of now the only live animal show is Lloydminster Stockade Roundup. Canada’s border city is planning to host its 42nd Annual Show Tuesday, November 3rd to Saturday, November 7th. Hereford breed shows are scheduled for Wednesday, November 4th in the morning. There are multi-breed jackpot shows in the evenings of each of the first three days, the Supreme Show Friday at 5:00 PM and prospect and junior shows on Saturday. Being that this is the only show this fall, interest has been very high and the Hereford MOE Show promises to be a respectable size. The Lloyd Exhibition’s show committee and staff has approval from Sask Health and is working diligently to adhere to tradeshow guidelines. Crowd sizes per building will be limited to 150 spectators, traffic will be moved through to reduce non-essential contact, masks and sanitation stations will be available, cleaning will be increased in intensity and frequency, shows will be broadcast live on in-barn screens and online with DLMS, extra space will be given to each exhibitor and extra volunteers will be there to help deal with all the new procedures. With distancing in mind, entries for the show will be capped at 450 head, approximately three quarters of the max capacity for Lloyd’s facilities. For more information, contact the Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition Association.

The fall sale run in Saskatchewan is largely unchanged as far as dates and offerings go; however, there will be a large reliance on Internet and phone marketing to limit crowd sizes. Keep your ears and eyes open for the fall sale run October 11-19, 2020. Our Hereford breeders are always gracious to show off their cattle and having your homework done ahead of time is even more of an advantage and almost a necessity for this year. If you have junior aged kids also keep in mind that many of these sales sponsor and participate in the CJHA Heifer Lottery which helps youth purchase genetics. For more info on the heifer lotto talk to Hereford breeders or the Canadian Hereford Association. No doubt it Once again, I say that I hope we can return to a normal will be advantageous for some personal interaction at schedule of events soon where we can further cultivate the fall sales and hopefully everyone remains healthy. our personal relationships. SHA

Saskatchewan Saskatchewan Hereford Association Member, Well this certainly has been an interesting year for the SHA. This letter is to let you know, that due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, we will not be hosting an “in person” AGM. The SHA Board had discussed trying to host a virtual/online meeting but due to difficulty of voting and getting procedures of the meeting platform out to the membership we have decided to just send you all of the information. With the absence of voting and elections this year the SHA board is tabling any resolutions that may have come forward to the 2021 AGM. The board members who were up for election this year agreed to serve one more year, added to their term. The elections next year will include these board members with a 2 year term as well as the board members whose regular 3 year term is ending. Some resolutions coming forward will be updating communication with the membership as well as our constitution to reflect the new forms of motions and voting using email, text, and online meetings.

of the Red Coat, and Corey Lees is chairman of the Agribition Committee. You will find their reports attached. Logan Martinson has been posting on Twitter for the SHA. Stephen Myer is the secretary for our meetings and has submitted reports to Cattle Call and The Canadian Hereford Digest. Stephen’s minutes from the 2019 AGM are includedas well. We have hired Today’s Publishing to produce the Cattle Call and they will be handling our website moving forward as well. Thank you to Stephen Myer for taking care of it until now. Please contact any of the board members with ideas for content in print or online. Moving forward Ag-in-Motion will look different this year, Bonanza will be a virtual show, and just recently Agribition and the Royal have been cancelled. The board has plans for a $50,000 Bull Jackpot that will be postponed until Agribition’s 50th in 2021 now. As for the other fall shows and sales we will have to wait and see. If you have any questions, concerns or ideas for the board please talk to any of the board members, their contact information is listed below. You can also email skhereford@sasktel.net or text 306-570-7526.

I would like to thank all of the board members and volunteers this past year that spent their time and helped make the programs and events happen like Bonanza, Ag-in-Motion, Agribition, the Red Coat Fundraiser, the 4-H Rewards Program and Twitter. We look forward to hearing from you. Kristina Just and Rob O’Connor are heading up the Ag-in-Motion display, Matt Lohner is in charge

Board of Directors RED COAT REPORT- MATT LOHNER The Red Coat Classic at Agribition 2019 was another strong success thanks to our fellow breeders and services who donated sale credits, semen, and so much more. Thank you to everyone who donated and bought tickets. The Grand Prize heifer was brought to us by The Cliff ’s Farm and was won by Ryan Hurlbert. Congratulations and Thank you to the Reid Family. For 2020, we are looking to do something different with a Bull Social. This will be more like the Red Coats of old. There will be a social event with food and beverages and the opportunity to judge the cattle yourself. There will also be a panel of judges. We will draw one ticket and the lucky winner will get to go out and take their choice of all the bulls in the ring. AGRIBITION REPORT – COREY LEES & CHAD WILSON Agribition 2019 was a learning curve for the SHA board as we took on the duties of preparing for the show , but we got through it and the week was a huge success! A huge THANK YOU to everyone that’s helped out in any form. Also a big THANK YOU to our sponsors as we need you to make this show happen. An exciting time during the week was when Haroldsons United was selected overall Champion Bull Calf in the all breeds show sponsored by SEMEX. Congratulations Haroldsons Polled Herefords, Lenna & Chad Wilson. Also congratulations to Remitall West on being selected the Reserve Overall Champion Yearling Heifer in the First Lady classic.

SHA

As many of you may already know that the Agribition show for 2020 has been cancelled due to Covid. It was a tough decision for CWA but the health and safety of all the volunteers, guests and exhibitors come first. Plans are already started to make the 50th anniversary show a huge success in 2021 and Regina will be a national show in 2021. Thanks, from your show chairman Corey Lees and Chad Wilson AG IN MOTION- KRISTINA JUST AND ROB O’CONNOR The year 2020 has been a challenge for any public event, Ag In Motion is no exception. With government regulations relating to gathering sizes, AIM had to be moved to an online format. As a result, our Sask Hereford presence will be online as well. In collaboration with Glacier Media (the company behind AIM), we will have a short online presentation/ video outlining the benefits of the Hereford breed. Once the online AIM show is complete, the Sask Herefords will have use of that video via a youtube link in the future. You will be able to view our virtual booth by logging onto the Ag In Motion Virtual Show. Although this year is different, we look forward to shaking your hand and visiting with you at the AIM site in 2021 at our display. Kristina Just

Jason Hoffman from Thedford Nebraska was the judge of the open show on Friday and did a very fine job.

Keeping Up With The Times During The Covid-19 Pandemic

Biography: Dr. Colin Palmer is an Associate Professor of Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from Nova Scotia, Dr. Palmer worked in mixed practices in Ontario and British Columbia and has owned/operated a practice in Saskatchewan. Dr. Palmer along with his wife Kim and children Lauren, Emily and Carter run a herd of purebred Red Angus cattle under the KC Cattle Co. name.

Until an effective Covid-19 vaccine is developed, it looks like we will be living this new reality for at least the next several months. Recently, I attended my first virtual conference including an annual general meeting that I chaired. Just three months ago we planned to hold our typical 2½ day conference including an awards dinner, business meetings and a pre-conference symposium in a major hotel in downtown Pittsburgh. As the pandemic evolved, including the still in-place Canada-US border closure, we realized that we had two choices… cancel or attempt our first virtual meeting. We chose virtual and we pulled it off! Sure, there were a few glitches and lots of new things to learn; however, my American colleagues adopted a slogan used by the US Marine Corps – “improvise, adapt and overcome.” As a Canadian, I chose a more simplified personal slogan – “Can Do.” Whatever personal motivator one chooses, I think it is imperative that we continue to move forward. Bringing new knowledge to our businesses is key to adapting our businesses to an ever changing world.

physically attending conferences and shows because of the opportunity to chat with industry representatives and friends thereby, building excitement and enthusiasm that could be brought back to your own business. I also said that learning new things from a book or online is just not as exciting as learning new things from your colleagues. By and large, I still believe what I said; I look forward to things getting back to the way they were!

What should we do? How can we see new things? My answer is: get on the web! If you are not computer savvy, find someone under 20 to help you. Preferably, someone in your family group so that physical distancing is not an issue. Short bits of information and news items can be found on Twitter. I follow a few news organizations and receive updates daily in my email inbox. The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association puts out a weekly bulletin with links to several industry-related news items, market reports, production information, video links etc. Many farm papers, breed organizations, farm equipment manufacturers, and All, or nearly all, of our annual Ag- government organizations circulate oriented trade shows, fairs, and information via online links. exhibitions have been cancelled for 2020. Several years ago (2011), I wrote an article called Continuing Education for My newest media addiction are Vlogs, Farmers and Ranchers which I opened which is abbreviated from video blog with: “If you never get off the farm you or video log. A video blog or video log, are never going to learn anything!” combine video with supporting text and In my article, I extolled the value of other data. Most are 12 to 20 minutes long with story lines being recorded in

one take or cut into multiple parts. Vlogs can be found on YouTube which I access through my internet connection either on my computer or most commonly through Apple TV. You are encouraged to subscribe to a vlogger’s page and will be notified of updates. Some of the most popular agbased vloggers have tens of thousands of followers; some have followers numbering in the hundreds of thousands. Ag technology manufacturers have recognized the value in working with the most popular vloggers and are partnering with them to demonstrate the use of equipment in their videos. Others are providing support through pop up ads which, as I understand it, are tailored toward what the viewer likes to watch. For example, I see ads for cattle vaccines, farm equipment, trucks and pesticides. With access to advanced cameras and drones, it is truly remarkable to see what these individuals can produce. The information being distributed by a vlogger may not be completely accurate, but because subscribers can like, dislike and comment on a vlog, most vloggers will provide the correct information either later in the same video or in a subsequent video. Millions of informational videos may also be found on YouTube. I have used YouTube videos to learn how to make repairs, set up my seed drill, correct issues with my GPS and autosteer, and to answer agronomy questions. If you are having trouble understanding the step by step instructions in a service manual or you don’t even have a manual, in most cases you will be able to find at least one YouTube video that can help.

the live setting, and they are most certainly better than conference calls. Voting on motions is simple and easy. Attendees may show a thumbs up or thumbs down as opposed to “I” or “Nay” with more elaborate secret ballots being available. PSAV, a full service global event production company handled the conference I attended coordinating the prerecording of all speaker sessions. The speakers were available right after their sessions for a live question and answer period. We also had a room for industry sponsors where attendees could look at promotional videos and chat with reps. Virtual meetings, conferences and trade shows offer the advantage of eliminating travel, food, lodging and additional entertainment costs. From my point of view, it is always nicer to stay in your own bed. The ability to visit with friends, both old and new, is not the same and from what I have seen, it is harder to keep an audience engaged; especially, for several hours. Maybe the 10 to 20 minute VLOGs have an advantage… they are certainly more entertaining than most lectures. Stay safe and try your best to get engaged. A lot of businesses need our continuing support and we need them too.

Virtual conferences, meetings and webinars provided through platforms like Zoom, Webex, Microsoft Teams, and GoToMeeting, to name a few, have become the new norm and are very easy to use. My experience to date suggests that it may actually be easier to keep a virtual meeting on track than in

Cat Skinner Shorty’s neighbours were… well different. There were ranchers, hippies and old timers that were born, raised and spent their entire life in the same yard. Some of them were skilled cattlemen, some skilled cowboys and the hippies were skilled farmers albeit their crops only recently became legal. Frank was none of the above. True enough he had been born and raised in the same house he and his wife inhabited now, but it was his wife that was the skilled one in his operation. Frank could spend the day talking to a hat on a stump, in fact he preferred the stump to his wife most days, but he had a heart as big as a house and he would work his butt off to pull off a good joke. Shorty had grown up on the neighbouring ranch to Frank and even though he didn’t see Frank often, he did stop in when he was passing through. Shorty had stopped in earlier in the day, but there was no one home. Now, as he made his way home from dropping some salt blocks on a remote corner of the summer range, he was happy to see Frank’s truck parked at Deadpine Lake. Frank was out on a new irrigation dam that was being built for the ranchers downstream. Shorty pulled over, got out of his truck and joined his old friend. “Shorty! Good to see you!” Frank extended his dirty hand and Shorty shook it. “Hi Frank. What’s happening?” Shorty nodded towards a D6 Cat parked on top of the new dam. “That Joe’s Cat?” “Yup” Frank was grinning now. “What’s going on Frank?” It was one of those questions that Shorty really wasn’t sure he wanted answered. “Well Shorty… follow me while I tell you.” Frank turned and walked towards his truck. “I’ve known Joe for a long time. In fact he and I went to school together… at least

to Grade 8.” Frank glanced over to see if Shorty had any reaction to his statement. “You two made it to Grade 8?” “Not really… we aged out. But here is the thing… Joe is a pretty good friend, but he has always been an arrogant SOB. He thinks he is pretty cool with his little toy over there.” Frank nodded back at the Cat. “So today I got kinda lucky. Real lucky that you showed up, ‘cause I need a little help to put that cocky little bugger in his place.” “Geez Frank! I am too young to go to jail…” Shorty was only half kidding. Frank’s grin just got bigger. The grin was so big that it caused his hand rolled cigarette to tumble down his shirt. Frank stepped on the butt and nodded into the bush. There, laying lifeless was a young black bear. “What the hell Frank?” “The frickin’ bears have been hanging around here all summer, Shorty. I have had enough of them. I came up here to see how Joe was doin’ on the dam and there he was just standin’ there on the road, so I shot him.” “We are still talking about the bear, right Frank?” “Yeah! Now you are here, I can get even with that little prick.” “Bear or have we switched to Joe?” Frank was getting pretty excited as he realized they might be able to pull this off. He ignored Shorty’s question completely. “Just wait here, Shorty.” Shorty had always had the impression that Frank was kinda allergic to breaking a sweat, but that afternoon and early evening he learned otherwise. By the time the two men

Cattle Call 24

had accomplished the plan that Frank had hatched, both of them were sweaty and somewhat blood stained… but both were pretty proud of themselves. They loaded the bear carcass onto a tarp that Frank pulled out from under the seat of his truck and were able to drag the bear over to the Cat. Then with the help of some old lariats that Shorty had, a block and tackle that Frank produced from his truck box and some ranch rocket horsepower the two men were able to lift the bear onto the operator’s platform of Joe’s old D6. They pried and pulled, they grunted and swore and they ended up getting the carcass in a seated position on the D6. Frank picked up his long discarded shirt and draped it over the bear’s shoulders as if he were wearing it, pulled an old Case ball cap out of the cab of his truck and put it on the bear’s head and then wired the bear’s neck to the bush guard behind the Cat’s seat. By this time the carcass was getting a little stiff, but Frank was able to pull the front paws over and wedge them onto the control arms on either side of the seat. As a final touch, Frank sacrificed a hand made cigarette and left it in the bear’s mouth. By the time they stepped back to admire their handiwork they realized they were only able to see it by headlights. Frank was sweat soaked and swatting mosquitoes from his bare back and arms. Shorty was covered in sweat and a little bear blood, but he was a little proud of what the two had accomplished. Shorty looked over at his old friend. Frank was lighting another cigarette and staring at the D6. “Shorty, you got the time?” “Geez Frank it is after 9… I gotta get going, Cathy is going to have a fit.” “You better stop at my place and clean up a bit, if she is worried and you show up looking like that…” Shorty and Frank showed up at Frank’s house later that night. Frank’s wife was out baling hay, so Shorty did a quick clean up, phoned Cathy and told her he had been helping Frank kill some chickens and then headed home. Frank was hiding in the brush at 6 AM the next morning when Joe arrived to go to work. Joe rolled up and parked his truck in the same place he had been parking all week. He got out of the cab, pulled on a yellow hard hat and a long sleeved

shirt and headed across the dam towards his Cat. He was carrying a grease gun and staring out across the lake. He was only a few steps away from the machine when he shifted his attention from the lake to the task at hand. He always fired the Cat up while he greased the machine and for some reason on this day he hadn’t even looked at the Cat until he started to climb onto the operator’s platform. Frank watched Joe drop the grease gun and stumble backward. Then he regained his balance and took a quick couple steps towards his truck. By that time Joe’s Grade 7 education kicked in and he realized that he had been set up. He looked around to make sure no one had seen him. He listened carefully to see if anyone was laughing at him and if the damned bear was breathing. He heard neither, so he picked up the grease gun and climbed onto the Cat. Joe was staring at a glassy eyed black bear with a hand rolled cigarette in his mouth. The bear looks as though he was wearing a shirt and the biggest insult of all, he was wearing a Case hat. The bear was starting to stink and the flies were a pain in the butt. Joe had two questions, who did this and how the hell was he going to get the bear out of his seat. The answer to both questions walked out of the bush a few minutes later. Frank’s eyes were red from lack of sleep and laughing. “Morning Joe. You hire a new guy?” Frank was straight faced as he lit yet another cigarette. “Figured it was you, you bastard. You are lucky this is a grease gun. Just in time to help me get this out of my way. And just so you know, I start the clock when I get out of the truck, so you better get up here and get going.” Shorty figured it must have cost the ranchers about $500 that morning, while the two old friends cleaned up the Cat so that Joe could go to work. There was a lot of swearing, a lot of sweating, but most of all the two men laughed like they were kids again. If you ever go to Deadpine Lake you will see an earth dam on the south end of the lake. On the west end of the dam there is an unusual bump on the top side of the dam, beneath which lies a bear carcass wearing a red and black checked shirt and a Case ball cap.

Grant Rolston was born and raised in ranching country near Penticton, British Columbia. After graduating school, he worked on a purebred Hereford ranch, then assumed a position at Western Breeders Artificial Insemination Unit. In 1980, he left the livestock scene and joined the Edmonton Police Department, where he received his formal training in photography, working for the IDENT unit (crime scene investigation). After a decade, he returned to the industry, purchasing a herd of purebred Angus cattle but both Grant and his wife, Lauralee, worked off the ranch to make a living. He chose livestock photography and is now Canada’s premier livestock photographer of beef cattle. Grant and Lauralee travel throughout nine provinces in Canada for on farm photography, in addition to all major livestock shows, including the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, the Canadian Western Agribition and all major National Junior shows in the summer months. Grant and Lauralee Rolston reside in Vulcan, Alberta. With four decades of experience, Grant shares things that are “Not Taken for Granted.” Cattle Call 25
