President’s Report

It is hard to believe that summer is nearing an end and preparations for fall have already begun.

The Saskatchewan Hereford Association held its AGM on June 24th in Davidson. A huge Thank You goes out to our outgoing president Lyal Heidecker who put in countless hours of work for the SHA. Thank You also to our outgoing board directors Corey Lees and Carl Ramsay, for all the efforts they have put in. We welcomed new board members Julie Mortenson, Roger Procyk, and Jillian Just, as well as our new SJHA member Jesse Procyk.

The North West Sask Hereford Zone Field day was held on August 4th in Turtleford again this year. The South East Hereford Zone Field day was held on August 13th at Brooks Farms near Alameda. Thank you, to the field day hosts, and to all who exhibited cattle at these events and congratulations to all the winners! Field days are always a low-key day with great hospitality, visiting, and of course good Hereford cattle. Be sure to check out the results of each show in this publication.

If you are looking to add strong genetics to your program, be sure to check out the number of production sales in Saskatchewan happening throughout the fall!

I would like to acknowledge the two Hereford herd Dispersals happening this fall: Phantom Creek Livestock and C & T Cattle Company, two herds that have had strong impacts in the Hereford breed. The people behind these operations, Doug, Wanda, Chris, Tina and their families have been truly influential and are well known throughout the beef industry. I wish them well with their sales and all the best in their future endeavours! Plan to attend these sales for great cattle, hospitality and fellowship.

After delays, the SHA is going ahead with the Red Coat Classic Bull Jackpot format this year at Agribition. We look forward to hosting this new and exciting event in Regina. Be sure to check out the information in this publication as well as the SHA website. If you have any questions, feel free to contact chairman of the committee Rob O Connor.

Make sure to follow the Saskatchewan Hereford Association on Facebook and Twitter to stay up to date with Hereford news in the province

I look forward to catching up with everyone this fall!

Sask. Producers Plan to Build New Abattoir

Work is expected to begin this fall on a new abattoir in Alameda, Sask., after a group of producers decided the region needed more slaughter capacity.

South East Butcher Block Co-operative formed last year and will take over and expand an existing business.

The current owner of Davis Meats, Murray Carnduff, who had planned to retire, has agreed to manage the new abattoir for five years, said spokesperson Justin Marcotte. It will be built on the same property as the current facility, on Highway 9, but expanded to handle 20 head per week, as well as sheep and hogs.

Marcotte said the plant currently processes about eight head weekly and has a waiting list of longer than a year.

“The need is there and since COVID it’s worse,” he said, referring to increasing consumer demand to know where their food comes from.

The committee has been courting investors through producer and consumer shares to raise the capital they need for the construction. Marcotte said final building quotes weren’t yet in but between $1 and $1.5 million is likely needed.

“As a co-op, we’re purchasing an existing business, so it’s profitable from day one,” he said, referring to the risk.

Consumers will benefit because the plant will have fresh retail offerings in addition to the traditional frozen larger cuts.

Offering consumer shares at $500 each allows customers to tap into the direct market and buy the local products they want, he added.

Longer term plans call for deli-style lunches and perhaps bakery and other items to make Butcher Block a destination business.

“You’re going to the lake, you stop by Butcher Block on the way to the cabin,” he said.

A delivery truck making a loop that includes Weyburn, Estevan, Carlyle and Stoughton is also a possibility in a year or two, he added. It would deliver boxed beef packs.

Marcotte said the goal is to open next summer and employ about 10 full- and part-time people in the community of about 345.

The co-operative has a Facebook page and its website is scheduled to go live soon at www.sebutcherblock.ca.

The northwest Hereford Zone annual field day Results 2022

The 2022 edition of the Northwest Hereford Club Field Day and 48th Honour Roll Induction was held August 4th at Turtleford, Saskatchewan. Thank You to this year’s Honour Roll Inductees for your contribution to the Hereford Breed and our local cattle business!

Honouree

Wayne Hanson Unity, SK

Wayne is a fourth-generation farmer who grew up on the family farm northwest of Unity. He took his schooling at Ruth Country School and Unity High School. He has farmed for over fifty years, initially with his father and now with his son. The family farm has been around for over 100 years. Wayne has raised Hereford cattle since he started farming, which he breeds to Hereford and Charolais bulls. Wayne has been married to his wife Debbie for 48 years and they have 3 adult children; Cullen is a heavy-duty mechanic and farms with Wayne. Jacelyn is a physician in Saskatoon, and Sharah is a teacher in Saskatoon. They are also blessed with 4 amazing grandchildren.

Congratulations Wayne!

Honouree

O’Donnell Family Unity, SK

Garth and Vicky O’Donnell, their children Chelsea and Spencer, along with brother Brian and his wife Hellen and children David, Kelly and Brent, began ranching together in 1973. They ranched north of Unity and took over the family homestead near Winter, SK. The Ranch at Winter has been in the family since 1914 where their father Jim also raised Hereford cattle. Garth said he always just liked the Hereford cow because she seemed to be tougher than the rest, he said that he had tried other breeds, but the Herefords seem to last longer. They have purchased from many local breeders over the years, beginning at Battleford Bull sale, Maple creek bull sale, Midwest Bull sale and private treaty bulls. David is now home farming with Garth and Brian.Garth and Vicky have been blessed with 3 grand children and Brian and Hellen have 8 grand children! They are still very involved in the cattle business and enjoy going to livestock events.

Congratulations!

Thank you to the Turtleford Summer Cattle Show Committee for your joint efforts, and to all Hereford breeders for participating and everyone for attending the 2022 Field Day. This event is unique and is one of the largest of its kind in Canada. Our breed is strong because of its characteristics and its people, past, present, and future!

Cattle Dogs

Nearly every place has a dog. Dogs are part of the “rural lifestyle.” It is like a rule or something. If you live in a city or a town, you can have a poodle or something like that, but if you live on a farm, you have dog.

Now if you have a cattle ranch, you may have a cow dog. I say may have, because there are several other critical elements to owning a cow dog. Besides having cattle, you must have a horse or two, a cowboy hat and a 4X4 pick up. If you have a quad, you really can’t have a cow dog.

Cow dogs come in two shapes. They are either a Collie or a Heeler, not necessarily pure Collie or Heeler, but at least part of one or the other. I must specify here, that by Collie I mean Border Collie not the stupid Lassie type Collie. So, if you have been thinking you have a cow dog that is a Lab or a Shepard or a Poodle or something... forget it.

Now cow dogs have to obey very specific commands. I have a lot experience in this matter, having been around a lot of cowboys and their cow dogs. It has been my observation, that the most common command used on these cow dogs is “Get to the house you stupid son of a bitch!”, however “Get the hell out of there!” is also very common.

Some ranchers have spent a lot of money to have their cow dogs trained by a professional. I see where that would be advantageous, especially if the rancher has children. It’s not that the kids are safer around professionally trained dogs, it is just that the pro dogs start running for the house before the real swearing starts.

I know what you are thinking. You are thinking that a dog’s place isn’t in the corral anyways and that you only use your dog to bring the cattle in. In fairness

Cattle Call 30

to the dogs, I agree that a dog’s place is really in the pasture.

I have observed the cow dogs in action in the pasture. They are a thing of beauty. The cowboy, on his horse, going across the pasture to gather his cows, while his cow dog chases gophers and rolls in cow shit. Finally, the human mastery over canines takes place and the work begins.

The cowboy begins to gather the herd and sends the dog out to gather a stray. The dog goes out to the stray and finds her to be the most over protective bitch in the herd. The ballet begins, dog chases cow, cow chases dog, dog after cow, cow after dog and so on and so on and so on… The cowboy eventually rides over to the stray and gets her going towards the herd.

It is at this point that the keen observer sees the differences between the Collies and Heelers. If the cowboy has a Heeler, the dog will be busy heeling his horse as he makes his way back to the herd. The Collie will be chasing ducks, usually chasing ducks in front of the cows.

To the casual observer, it may be hard to distinguish the different commands at first, but there is a simple rule of thumb. If the

cowboy is on foot watching his horse run to the barn, while his dog is busy scattering the cows, the command “Come here you son of a bitch” generally refers to the horse.

If the cowboy is still on his horse, the command will be the same, but it will refer to the dog. To the untrained eye, this can be confusing, but it does explain why cowboys only have Collies or Heelers, but never both.

It is often said that a dog is as good as two cowboys. I think that comment was made originally by some rancher who had just finished paying a bunch of hungover cowboys and who didn’t have the opportunities I have had to watch cow dogs in action.

Well…it is time to go move my cows.

“Come on dog…. let’s go.”

Oh, this stuff is about other people’s dogs, not mine. Mine is a good dog.

“Come on boy, get in the truck while I get my hat.”

Grant Rolston was born and raised in ranching country near Penticton, British Columbia. After graduating school, he worked on a purebred Hereford ranch, then assumed a position at Western Breeders Artificial Insemination Unit. In 1980, he left the livestock scene and joined the Edmonton Police Department, where he received his formal training in photography, working for the IDENT unit (crime scene investigation). After a decade, he returned to the industry, purchasing a herd of purebred Angus cattle but both Grant and his wife, Lauralee, worked off the ranch to make a living. He chose livestock photography and is now Canada’s premier livestock photographer of beef cattle. Grant and Lauralee travel throughout nine provinces in Canada for on farm photography, in addition to all major livestock shows, including the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, the Canadian Western Agribition and all major National Junior shows in the summer months. Grant and Lauralee Rolston reside in Vulcan, Alberta. With four decades of experience, Grant shares things that are “Not Taken for Granted.”

A Breeder’s.... Veterinary Perspective

Types of Vaccine Products

My previous article: Viruses, Disease and Vaccine – A Brief Overview; explained that most infectious diseases are caused by bacteria or viruses; antibiotics are intended to combat bacteria, not viruses; and the best way to fight a viral disease is through prevention. Avoiding contact with viruses, including those potentially shedding viruses, is arguably the best way to prevent infection, but is not always practical or possible. Maintaining a completely isolated population of animals, or even a closed herd with absolutely no contact with outside animals of the same species is often difficult or even impossible on most beef cattle operations. Several viruses may survive outside of the animal and can be carried on boots, clothing and equipment. Some can be transported by alternative host species, in many cases without disease symptoms. The most economically important livestock disease on the planet is Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). Footand-mouth disease virus (FMDV) can be shed in milk; survive in imported meat; carried on human skin, clothing, vehicle tires; transported by birds and other animals; and can survive in contaminated bedding, dry manure, and even frozen soil for several weeks. Maintaining closed borders, strict import requirements, and limiting or preventing contact with livestock by visitors are the best measures to keep FMD out. What about when a viral disease takes up permanent residence; in other words, become endemic? Limiting spread of the disease and consequent losses becomes almost impossible without a vaccine. Remember, antibiotics kill bacteria, not viruses!

All vaccines are made by modifying or replicating a piece of the original virus or bacteria to stimulate the production of specialized white blood cells called memory T- and B-lymphocytes. The main types of vaccine are:

1) killed (inactivated);

2) modified-live (live-attenuated);

3) messenger RNA (mRNA);

4) subunit (component), recombinant, polysaccharide, and conjugate;

5) toxoid; and

6) viral vector.

An important detail is that all, or nearly all, vaccine products contain what are known as adjuvants. An adjuvant is a substance added to a vaccine product to stimulate the immune response thereby, enhancing both the level and the duration of protection. Since 1990, there has been a revolution in our understanding of the immune system. We now know that there are specialized receptors on very specialized cells that present what I think of as items that identify the perpetrator to the immune system. Sort of like how a tracking dog utilizes an individual’s unique scent. In more scientific terms, these specialized cells are called dendritic cells and they possess pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) which recognize select proteins called antigens, or more specifically pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) on the invading pathogens. The PPRs function like switches that activate the dendritic cells which, in turn, activates other components in the immune system. Newly discovered molecules that target these receptors are being incorporated into adjuvants to regulate various components of the immune system. Although PRRs have only recently been discovered, it is now evident that many very effective killed and attenuated vaccines already had their own built-in adjuvant. We just didn’t know it! These discoveries have enabled vaccines producers to incorporate very specific components as adjuvants resulting in improved vaccine performance with fewer side effects.

Cattle Call 32

Inactivated or heat inactivated, also known as killed vaccines and bacterins (another name for vaccine directed against a bacteria) represent the first generation in vaccine technology. These products contain whole forms of killed, disease causing bacteria or virus. Generally, inactivated vaccines do not confer as strong or as long-lasting immunity against the disease agent as other types of vaccines. A notable exception are the rabies virus vaccines. Inactivated vaccines are safe and do not cause disease. Many inactivated vaccines can now rival some of the more efficacious vaccine types largely due to advances in adjuvant technology.

Modified-live (live-attenuated) vaccines use a form of the diseasecausing virus or bacteria (also called a bacterin, like the killed vaccine) that does not cause full-blown disease yet has a similar antigenic profile The virus is alive, therefore, it can still invade and replicate within the host for several days or even weeks before it is neutralized. This is the reason that attenuated vaccines create such a strong and long-lasting immunity. Attenuated vaccines can take a long time to develop and sometimes may cause just enough disease to be harmful to the recipient. For example, modified-live infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) vaccines have traditionally not been recommended for use in pregnant animals because of the risk of abortion. Select products are now considered safe if used according to specific manufacturer recommendations. Mixing of sterile diluent with dried powder and the fragile nature of these vaccines require the product to be used within 1 or 2 hours of mixing are other disadvantages. Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines contain the genetic code for a select viral proteins that elicit a suitable immune response. Instead of using the whole virus, mRNA vaccines use a tiny piece of the genetic code of the virus which will then teach the host cells how to make a protein or a piece of a protein. Live viruses would normally take over host cells then use their own genetic code (RNA or DNA) to replicate themselves and in so doing create a number of proteins. By exposing the immune system to only a few select proteins the host can create memory T- and Bcells without risk of disease. The mRNA is destroyed after the new protein is made and the new protein tends to be made for a few weeks enabling stimulation of the immune system. Messenger RNA vaccines have been in existence for a few decades. Benefits include rapid production, improved storage and transport compared to other vaccine types, and no risk of causing disease in the patient. A very high level of safety has been advantageous in the fight against COVID-19. A disadvantage is relatively short-lived immune protection compared to having live virus replicating in the body.

Subunit, recombinant, polysaccharide, and conjugate vaccines all contain a piece or pieces of the disease agent that have been shown to elicit an immune response that is targeted at that piece of the organism. Part of a cell wall of a bacterium, perhaps 1 or more proteins, a sugar etc. They represent a purified form of an inactivated, whole-organism vaccine. Another name used for this class of vaccines is component vaccine. These vaccines are safe but generally do not confer long protection, therefore, regular booster shots are needed.

Toxoid vaccines use the toxin produced by select toxinproducing bacteria to create the immune response instead of the bacteria itself. Many cattle producers are familiar with blackleg (Clostridial) vaccines – those products providing protection against tetanus contain tetanus toxoid produced by Clostridium tetani. The clinical signs associated with tetanus are due to the toxin produced by the bacteria rather than the bacteria itself. By vaccinating using a toxoid vaccine the immune system will be directed towards neutralizing the toxin.

Viral vector vaccines used a modified version of another virus to create the immune response. The vector virus does not cause disease; however, it will infect cells and create its own proteins as it replicates. One or more of these proteins will be the same as the proteins produced on the surface of the harmful virus, aptly named spike proteins. If the body encounters the harmful virus, it will recognize these spike proteins and will already have antibody protection to fight the disease.

Modified-live and viral vector vaccines tend to confer longer periods of protection in recipients because the administered virus lives and replicates within the body for an extended period allowing continued stimulation of the immune system.

Multivalent and polyvalent are two terms often encountered in the vaccine literature and product labels. Essentially these terms mean the same thing – the vaccine product contains antigens from different strains of the same disease-causing organism; therefore, a broader range of immune protection will be produced. Most of the cattle vaccines available now are multi-disease or combination vaccines which means that they confer protection against several disease agents. Many of these vaccines often contain inactivated and modified live components within the same product.

In the past, all vaccines were administered into the muscle mass; however, many were proven effective when administered subcutaneously and labelled instructions followed suit. Very recently intranasal vaccines have been introduced for cattle. My next article will discuss routes of vaccine administration.
