Happy New Year fellow Hereford enthusiasts. As we usher in this new year it is tough not to think of it as one that we will get back to the things we enjoy most as cattle producers. It’s almost time for our Saskatchewan Hereford Association and our Hereford breeders to get back to showcasing our breed. With vaccine rollouts happening and scientists learning more about Covid-19, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. There are a few positives to look back on from 2020 that we can keep building on going forward. We have been blessed with a relatively mild winter to date (that’s likely to change sooner or later).

All in all, I’d say things are looking up.

It is my hope we can all enjoy a regular type show season this fall. I have missed the cattle and the people, and even the work, involved with running Agribition.

There is no better way that our Saskatchewan Hereford Association comes together than the big show. A whole group of calves have missed their chance to shine, and we’ve missed the chance to see how our favourites have developed from 2019. There are so many people that I usually see at least once a year that I’ve missed. I miss the team building and development of our board that comes with planning Agribition. It will be a welcome change to get back to the grind. It will be interesting to see how quickly all the aspects of the show can come swooping back to normal. The Saskatchewan Hereford Board has big plans for the 50th CWA. We will be hosting a $50,000 Hereford Bull Jackpot. Stay tuned for more details as we are able to continue planning this event. Coming out of these unprecedented events in modern times the next one promises to be even more special than it would have been in 2020.

your loved ones have felt the pain this pandemic has inflicted, my heart goes out to you, and I hope you have found or can find your way back to a brighter time. The frustration involved with being physically distant from people and activities is enough to take up a lot of time. My education pushes me to believe in the science behind the decisions that have been made by governments to protect our health, or the health of the general population. My experience managing a business does not ease my feelings about government spending. Let’s hope someone with fiscal responsibility has a plan somewhere! As we continue to deal with this pandemic, I hope decisions can be made with a dose of common sense, and that we can all use social media for fruitful things. Furthermore, I hope the literature I’ve seen suggesting Ivermectin as a deterrent of Covid-19 is factual, if so, most of us are already safe!

I am seeing more herds turn back to red hides. We are seeing enthusiasm and demand for Hereford cattle.

Saskatchewan’s fall sale run hit new highs, which gives hope for a strong upcoming bull sale season.

In the few shows that were able to put something on in 2020 Herefords had a good showing. The 42nd Annual Lloydminster Stockade Round-Up took place November 3rd to November 7th. The event was well attended by both cattle and people. Herefords were up in numbers at the show this year and the quality was outstanding. Agribition’s virtual show was well received. There were more Hereford entries than any other breed. The Supreme Champion Bull and Female winners were both from the Hereford division!

In closing lets start pining and planning for the great things ahead.

The Beyond Meat Phenomenon

Biography: Dr. Colin Palmer is an Associate Professor of Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from Nova Scotia, Dr. Palmer worked in mixed practices in Ontario and British Columbia and has owned/operated a practice in Saskatchewan. Dr. Palmer along with his wife Kim and children Lauren, Emily and Carter run a herd of purebred Red Angus cattle under the KC Cattle Co. name.

For beef producers it is frustrating to see how many retailers and restaurant chains are offering Beyond Meat products to consumers. Many say they would never eat the product and consider it high treason for anyone associated with our industry to admit to such a crime.

On the other hand, it is fascinating to watch. Certainly the sales reports show there is demand for the product and it seems that every week I hear of another big-name restaurant chain that is offering a meat-alternative product.

I have read every article that has come across my desk about Beyond Meat and meat alternatives and I have even tried a Beyond Meat burger (Beyond Burger) and have so far survived the experience.

I must admit that I had heard so much hype about it that I was eager to give it a try, but at the same time I felt a bit rebellious and guilty. To balance the experience and ease my conscience, I ordered a conventional burger and took one or two bites of each product in sequence. From my point of view, if you like beef burgers made with the real thing the Beyond Meat burger was disappointing. The dominant taste was the lettuce and other ingredients used to garnish the burger, whereas the beef burger was juicier and certainly a much tastier experience. I had to wonder if I preferred the beef burger because that is what I had been raised with and had become accustomed to in my diet.

I concluded that for some the Beyond Meat product would be something they like and it likely would attract those customers who would otherwise not eat meat.

Nobody likes competition! However, what can we learn from the competition, and from the launch and early success of Beyond Meat? To gain market share new products must demonstrate they are better than what already exists – price, taste, country of origin, carbon footprint, reputation of the processor/marketer to name a few have all been used in the marketing of meat. “Better for your health” seems to be the platform chosen

by Beyond Meats marketing executives.

Ethan Brown, founder and CEO of Beyond Meat said that comparing the nutrient composition of a Beyond Burger was too simplistic because it doesn’t factor in the reported health risks that are associated with eating red and processed meat namely, cancer and heart disease.

Another claim is that the Beyond Meat burger contains no cholesterol or animal-derived saturated fat and is lower in saturated fat than burgers made from fattier cuts of beef. For the most part, the research supporting the link between the consumption of red meat and disease in humans is weak, however, Beyond Meat’s initial success in the market place seems to be fueled by more than just a healthier-thanthe-other-stuff platform. Certainly one accelerant has been a timely and widely published misinterpretation of Health Canada’s recommendations in the recently updated Canada Food Guide.

The recommendation was to choose more plant-based protein alternatives yet this was spun into eating less meat which was not the original intention.

The truth is that Canada’s Food Guide does not say that plant proteins should be consumed at the expense

of animal protein. In fact, most Canadians consume barely enough protein with just 17 percent of our caloric intake coming from protein. That puts us at the bottom end of the recommended range of 17 to 35 percent. Another fact is that 44 percent of the saturated fat we consume comes from ultra-processed verses just 10 percent from red meat. A 75-gram, or slightly more than 2-ounce portion of real meat contains 184 calories and 26 grams of protein. Compare this with Beyond Burger which contains 20 grams of protein and 250 calories in a 113-gram (4-ounce) patty; roughly half the protein density. Furthermore, if you look at the list of ingredients you will notice salt; at 390 milligrams of sodium per patty this will quickly add up to over a 1000 milligrams with the addition of a hamburger bun and condiments. There is about four times as much sodium in a Beyond Meat patty as there is in the real thing. The Beyond Burger contains over twenty ingredients and by definition is an ultra-processed food compared with beef which has one ingredient – BEEF. Eating plants is a not a new thing for humans and unfortunately most of the ultra-processed foods are plant-based. We should encourage the consumption of more fresh fruits and vegetables which are better for us in the raw state. Meat and vegetables work well together enhancing digestion and absorption of nutrients – kind of like it was meant to be!

Putting all of this information in perspective, what is the real reason that meat substitutes like Beyond Meat are able to gain any traction at all? It is really quite simple … the development and marketing of these products is controlled by a segment of the population who do not want to eat meat and they want all of us to adopt their views. In order to get the consumer to buy into their ideal they must find something to base their marketing strategy on. For Beyond Meat to tout themselves as a healthy alternative, which they simply are not, the choice will likely be their undoing. It seems that our society is fine with animals eating animals – thank you Discovery Channel and the Pet Food Industry! Maybe we need a campaign to highlight the importance of meat in the human diet and how the anthropomorphism (individuals who attribute human traits, intentions and emotions to animals) have driven us to consume ultra-processed, unhealthy food.

International demand for Canadian beef has been strong and growing in 2019.

A consistent, high quality product and our traceability system are key factors contributing to our success. But what can we learn from Beyond Meat? Embrace research to study the role of meat in the human diet and the value of forage eating animals in our ecosystem. Continue to educate our consumers about our product and how it is produced. Check out our competition’s website and see what they are doing that we could do too. Some ideas I gleaned from Beyond Meat … will packaging two ready to cook hamburger patties work for beef? Can we market new products like pre-seasoned hamburger ready for tacos?

George Atuan, a noteworthy financial advisor and contributor of articles to Seeking Alpha - a publication offering market insight, financial analysis, investment ideas and stock research provided his take on a Beyond Meat product. After trying a few bites he found that the taste reminded him of food he had eaten in the Middle East and described it as nothing more than an overpriced falafel.

The New Guy Shorty was partial to working alone, and this day was no exception. It was mid-morning and he was trailing a hundred or so pairs to summer pasture. Things were going along pretty well until Shorty heard a horse approaching him from behind. Shorty turned in the saddle and saw a bay coloured horse approaching at a brisk trot.

The rider reined his bay in and walked up beside Shorty. He was a tall, grey haired man, dressed in what looked to be brand new western clothes, from his shiny boots to his brand-new cowboy hat. Shorty suddenly felt under dressed.

“Howdy!” The greeting was way too enthusiastic for Shorty.

“Mornin’” Shorty responded with as little enthusiasm as he could muster.

“Jack,” the man held his right hand out towards Shorty, “My name’s Jack, I bought the Thompson place last fall.”

“Shorty,” Shorty ignored the hand that was offered.

“Good to meet you Shorty! I figured it must be you. Do you mind if I tag along for a while?”

“It’s a public road.” Shorty glanced over at Jack and the bay. He assumed the bay was new to Jack, mostly because everything else was brand new, new saddle, new rope, new bridle and new guy.

“Thanks Shorty. I thought I might ride along and help out a bit. I’ve meant to get up to your place and meet you, just been kinda busy. I have been pretty busy wrapping up my law practice in the city and moving up to the ranch. The wife has settled in now and has the house all ripped up making it hers. I had to get out of the house while she is doing all that, been through two wives before her and I know better than to hang around. Just write the cheques...”

Jack looked over at Shorty to see if there was any reaction. Shorty didn’t appear to be very impressed and was staring off to his right.

“Mike! Bring her back!” Shorty waved his right arm off towards the bush on his right. Jack hadn’t even noticed the dog that raced off the road and disappeared into the trees.

“Should I go help out, Shorty?”

“Nope” Shorty watched the herd move along until he

saw some cows emerge from the trees on his right.

“Mike!”

The dog turned and ran back to Shorty’s side.

“Wow... he’s pretty good Shorty!” Jack had moved his horse past Shorty in an effort to move the cows along a little faster. The cows, rather than speeding up, were looking to escape the pressure by getting off the road.

“Slow down Jack! Mike!” Shorty was waving his left arm and Mike headed off to the left.

“I can get ‘em Shorty!” Jack started to rein his mount to the left.

“No... you stay put. You need to slow down, Mike is going to get fed up with you pretty quick, you are making extra work, slow down!

Slower is faster.” Shorty glanced over at Jack, he looked a little shocked.

“Oh, I just figured you would want to get these to where they are going while I was here to help.”

“Is that what you think you are doing? You ain’t helping Jack. You are a make work project for me and Mike.”

Jack looked over at Shorty. Shorty was staring at him.

“You want some advice Jack?”

“I guess so...” Jack didn’t sound all that convincing to Shorty.

“You aren’t a big city lawyer out here; you are the new guy. We judge new guys by watching what they do and how they do it, we don’t care how fancy your truck is, we care about how you treat us and how you act.”

Jack just sat there. His face was red, and he looked like he wanted to tell Shorty just what Shorty needed to know. Shorty didn’t give him the chance.

“Mike!” The strays had entered the road again and Mike turned back towards Shorty. “I am

gonna tell you one more thing, Jack. You are going to learn a lot more listening then you will talkin.’”

Jack’s face was now bright red. He looked as though he really wanted to provide a rebuttal to this smart-ass cowboy, but he had never actually prepared many rebuttals in his law career.

He had paralegals to write those, he just read them in court. He was a little hurt by the harsh criticism, and he waited for a few seconds for the apology he thought was coming... but there was nothing.

So... he just turned his horse towards home and rode away.

Shorty glanced down at Mike, and the dog looked up at Shorty. It sure looked like Mike was laughing.

Shorty never had Jack’s help driving cattle again. After the house was renovated, wife number three bought a brand-new Mercedes.

The house and yard were always well kept, the ranch part not so much. Jack stayed pretty much out of sight. He cut his hay too late and baled it too early, and his calves were small, at least those that survived.

Later that year Shorty heard that wife number three had taken her Mercedes and a sizeable amount of gas money and moved back to the city.

Shorty noticed that Jack was holding try outs for wife four throughout the next summer but hadn’t offered a contract to any of the contenders. Jack had let the yard go that summer, but in the early fall Shorty noticed a new truck parked next to Jack’s. The yard was soon looking pretty good and the rumours were that Jack had married number four.

The next spring Shorty was in the barn, taking the saddle off the day’s mount after his day’s work when that new truck pulled up to the barn.

A young, blonde lady jumped out and walked into the barn. It was number four.

“Shorty?” It was more of a question than a greeting and the young lady smiled at Shorty and held out her hand.

“Yes ma’am.” Shorty wiped the horse sweat on his chaps and shook number four’s hand.

“I’m Kristal... with a K.” She seemed to think Shorty would have to spell it.

“Kristal. What can I do for you?”

“Well Shorty, Jack is over his head on this whole ranch thing. He doesn’t seem to be doing anything very well. He needs help and needs it bad.”

Number four stopped and looked at Shorty.

There was no expression of any kind on the cowboy’s face, neither sympathy nor surprise.

“So...” she continued, “We... Jack is offering you a job. We really need someone like you to make this place viable, Shorty.”

“No thanks.” Shorty’s answer was way too fast for her liking.

“We are prepared to offer you twice the wages you are making now, as many good horses as you need and whatever new tack you want.”

“Well Kristal, I ain’t worth what I am getting paid here, I have got all the horses I need, and my tack is just fine thank you.”

Kristal was undeterred. “Well I will leave you with it Shorty, just think about it and we can talk next week.”

“No need, I thought about it and I am not about to change. My Dad worked this place when he was a kid, I have been here a long time and the boss treats me good. This ranch is owned by a third-generation rancher and he has been loyal to me, so he deserves my loyalty.”

“Ok Shorty, but the offer is out there if you change your mind.” Number four offered her hand and Shorty shook it and she started towards the truck.

“Hey Kristal!” Number four stopped and turned towards Shorty.

“What is it Shorty? You change your mind?”

“Nope. Just wondering... are you a paralegal by chance?”

“How did you know that?” Number four was laughing albeit a little nervously.

“Just a shot! Thanks for the offer, Kristal... with a K.” Shorty watched the truck head down the road towards its home. The home part would be relatively short lived, a “For Sale” sign went up on the ranch a couple months later and eventually the place sold to another new guy.

Jack and Kristal didn’t stop to say good-bye.

Grant Rolston was born and raised in ranching country near Penticton, British Columbia.

After graduating school, he worked on a purebred Hereford ranch, then assumed a position at Western Breeders Artificial Insemination Unit. In 1980, he left the livestock scene and joined the Edmonton Police Department, where he received his formal training in photography, working for the IDENT unit (crime scene investigation). After a decade, he returned to the industry, purchasing a herd of purebred Angus cattle but both Grant and his wife, Lauralee, worked off the ranch to make a living. He chose livestock photography and is now Canada’s premier livestock photographer of beef cattle. Grant and Lauralee travel throughout nine provinces in Canada for on farm photography, in addition to all major livestock shows, including the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, the Canadian Western Agribition and all major National Junior shows in the summer months. Grant and Lauralee Rolston reside in Vulcan, Alberta. With four decades of experience, Grant shares things that are “Not Taken for Granted.”
