Change In Calving Season, A Major Turning Point Switching to June calving about a dozen years ago was a pivotal move for Paul and Lori Kinnee of the Ten Bar Cattle Co. in Alberta’s Peace River region. Story By Lee Hart

es it required changes in herd management and marketing plans, but it also delivered some real benefits in reducing operating costs and not having to fight adverse weather during calving season. Overall it was one of the best decisions they’ve made in their beef cow-calf and backgrounding operation at Brownvale, about half way between the towns of Fairview and Peace River. Over the past 18 years they have developed an intensively managed, year-round grazing operation that’s built around a commercial straight-bred Simmental cowherd. Their management efforts and commitment to the Simmental breed earned them recognition in 2020 as the Alberta Simmental Association Commercial Breeder Of The Year.

“I just hated trying to calve out cows when it was -40C in April,” says Paul Kinnee with a laugh, thinking back to several years of calving seasons that started with heifers calving in February and carried through with cows calving through March and April. It wasn’t 40 below every April, but he describes calving season in their area as being a “roller coaster” of weather conditions, so it was definitely one of the leading reasons that led them to June calving.

And Lori admits she was a bit reluctant to make the “cold turkey” move to early summer calving in 2008. It was a bit hard on her nerves. “There it was August and the bulls were still in the yard and I pointed out if there’s no conception there’s no pay cheque next year,” she says now with a laugh. The bulls were turned out about August 20 for a 50-day breeding season, and June calving has gone smoothly every year since.

Born and raised on their respective mixed farming operations in central Alberta — Lori was raised on a cow-calf, feedlot and grain operation at Edberg, while Paul grew up a few miles away on a mixed cow-calf and grain operation at Kelsey. Both communities are south of Camrose. Both Paul and Lori grew up around Simmental cattle that were included in cross-bred breeding programs on their respective home farms. Married in 1995, they farmed with Lori’s parents for a few years before deciding to start their own commercial cow-calf operation. Finding a homestead with suitable land they relocated to Brownvale in 2002, bringing along a 200 head cross-bred herd of Red Angus/Simmental females to the new Bar Ten Cattle Co. headquarters.

“It had been a beef operation at one time, that hadn’t been used for a few years so we definitely had to make it our own,” says Lori. While Paul adds that except for the barn “there aren’t too many original boards left on the place.” As if starting a new farm in 2002 wasn’t a challenge enough, the Kinnees only had one calving season under their belt before the BSE crisis hit in May 2003. “We survived BSE but in the years that followed it made us step back and look at our operation and really think about where we wanted it to go,” says Lori. “We wanted to develop a program that improved efficiency and also worked at reducing costs.”

continued from front cover With a breeding program leaning heavily toward Red and Black Simmental and Fleckvieh bulls they were working their way towards developing a commercial straight Simmental cowherd. “When we first started out it was mostly a cross bred herd of Red Angus bred back to Simmental,” says Paul. “But I’ve always liked the Simmental genetics that have good maternal traits but also size and good production characteristics. “And then as we thought about changing the breeding season and moving to June calving that’s when we decided to really focus on developing the straight Simmental herd. To us it was the breed that could work best in the program we had in mind.” To make the transition, the cows and heifers calved as usual in the spring of 2008, and then it was simply a matter of delaying breeding that year until later in August. “It is fairly easy to change the breeding season,” says Lori. “Probably the bigger adjustment is to change your marketing program, and certainly that first year you have to be prepared as your cash flow and income are delayed.” For the Kinnees they decided to background the June-born calves, put them out to grass the following summer and then most years market them as long yearlings in September/October. “We have done that most years, but then in the last couple years we’ve also backgrounded calves over winter and then sold steers in May,” says Paul. “I don’t think there was any major reason other than the opportunity was there. It is nice to have the option depending on what the market is doing and adding some cash flow.” The calves are born on pasture over about a six week calving season starting in June, with most calves from mature cows with 100 to 110 pound birthweights, while heifers calves are more in the 85 pound range. They stay with their mothers through the summer and fall grazing season and are usually weaned at around 550 pounds in late December and early January. The weaned calves are held in the yard and fed for about 10 days after weaning and then moved to a couple 20 acre paddocks for the winter where they are fed a ration that includes hay, silage as well as some oats. “Our backgrounding program is aimed at putting some frame on the calves, rather than too much flesh,” says Paul. “We get some size on the calves so they can put on weight when they move to pasture in May.” Most years the calves have been sold in September/October with steers in the 950 to 1000 pound range and heifers at about 900 pounds — that’s except for the past couple years when steers were sold in May. Paul says the move to June calving has eliminated much of the work and stress that comes with late winter and spring calving. “You’re not fighting the weather and if does rain in June you don’t end up with sick calves,” he says. “And you’re working with the natural advantage as the grass is there, cows are eating grass and producing milk, it is just so much simpler.” Starting with about 275 head of cows in 2008 when they began June

calving, the Ten Bar Cattle Co. herd today has grown to about 500 head, managed as four different herds through 122 paddocks in a spring, summer and fall rotational grazing system. Paddocks average about 40 acres in size. The cowherd is moved onto green grass and spring and summer grazing program in late May. “With the June calving on pasture I’d say we have virtually zero calving problems,” says Paul. “You always have one or two with a malpresentation but other than that they calve on their own.” The cows are out on rotational grazing until about mid-October when they move to swath grazing of oat swaths until they move to bale grazing usually in about mid-February. They stay with bale grazing until about mid May when they are moved into stockpiled forage and of course some new green grass growth is also starting to come. “By early June as they begin calving, the cows mostly rate as a 4 Body Condition Score,” says Paul, noting it is not difficult to keep them in good condition. June calving, and year-round grazing has meant that essentially the cowherd stays out on pasture the whole year. Oat swaths and bale grazing are a much more economical winter feeding program than hauling feed to cattle every day. “Before we made the transition we use to be starting the tractor and other equipment every day in winter,” says Paul. “Now we have to start a tractor about once a week to feed the cows.” While the Kinnees rely on straight Simmental genetics, they say their program delivers it’s own brand of hybrid vigour to the calves. “June calving on its own provides vigour to those calves,” says Paul. “It’s nice weather and they’re up and never miss a beat. They’re not stressed by cold and they don’t get sick. Also introducing Fleckvieh bulls is sort of like crossbreeding. Instead of a Red Angus cross we have a Fleckvieh cross.” Looking at the bull battery for the 2021 calf crop, its about 60 per cent Fleckvieh, 20 per cent red Simmental and 20 per cent black Simmental. Living on the edge a bit for the coming calving season, they also this past August bred 100 heifers to low birthweight Simmental bulls. They usually only keep 30 to 40 replacements, but with some fine looking heifer calves born in 2019 they decided to breed a bigger group in 2020. “We’ll see how it goes and hopefully those EPDs on birthweights are reliable,” says Lori. “If it works out we’ll probably cull a little heavier on some of the older cows next year.” The Kinnees have developed a straightbred Simmental program that produces the quality of cattle they want. “The biggest thing we like about our straight-bred calf crop is consistency,” says Paul. “In the past when we’ve tried other crosses we’d get too many small frames, but this program provides consistency. When it comes time to market, it is a nice even bunch of calves and with the steers for example 95 per cent can all go in one drag.” Future plans for the efficient and high performing beef herd will most likely involve the next generation. While their children Raelle, 23, and Josh, 20 are completing their post secondary educations both are planning to return to Ten Bar Cattle Co. once they are through school. The Kinnees are happy with the growth and performance of the herd, and the more efficient operation they have developed around the June calving program. “One breed marketing program says their calves get up and go,” says Lori. “I like to say that our calves get up and grow. We have a program that is working, and while there is always room for improvement, we also believe in the old motto if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.”

appy New Year and welcome to the first issue of Commercial Country for 2021! 2020 was one of the most challenging years in recent history as we all learned to deal with new situations and unknowns. Many of us struggled to stay current and to understand the what, where and whys of life as the rules seemed to continually change. Through it all many folks gained a new appreciation for agriculture while realizing that food production has never been more important than it is today.
There were few complaints from cattle producers who sold $1500 calves at the beginning of October when buyers were looking for Simmental calves and were paying a premium for them because they know that today’s top quality Simmental influenced cattle feed well, and provide the yield and carcass size while grading to fit today’s market demands.

Udder Edema: Clinical Signs and Do We Treat?
T
his topic came up from a conversation I had with a well-seasoned veterinary practitioner from Virden Manitoba and a Simmental breeder. He indicated to me that there are cases of udder edema that some producers recognize something is wrong but don’t know what it is and don’t know what to do about it. This article will describe the different degrees we see in practice and when we might intervene. Udder edema is the fluid accumulation within the udder and teats and ahead of the udder as bred cattle (primarily heifers) get very close to parturition. This entrapment of fluid can lead to an uncomfortable condition as well as the potential to develop mastitis and it could impair long term milk production in the female. Of course this condition is much more frequent in dairy cattle but we still see it in heavier milking beef heifers or cows as well. It is worse in older heifers (>26 months) and those that don’t get much exercise. We again see more in the heavier milking lines of Simmentals and other breeds that produce more milk. The key here is to recognize the accumulation of fluid in a heavy parturient heifer. You may then observe whether the condition is worsening. Then several questions must be answered in order to decide how to proceed next. Recognize that once calving occurs and the milk is sucked out by the calf gradually the extra fluid will disappear. You and your veterinarian must decide when the condition is bad enough to warrant treatment. Again we are concerned about the potential health effects such as the mastitis or decrease in life-time milk production. Since I mentioned calving will lead to a cure if there is certainty about the length of gestation inducing may be in order in some cases. We do not want to induce too early and that be a detriment to the calf from being premature. Dairy heifers are sometimes milked early to release the pressure but keep in mind we need to conserve this good quality colostrum for the calf in the beef industry and I can confidently state this is virtually never ever done in beef cattle. Treatment if instituted in the more advanced cases consist primarily of diuretics. Diuretics help remove the excess fluid by having them pee it out. Keep in mind the location of fluid loss is not specific so constant access to water must still be available. There are two main products that are used in the treatment of

udder edema that being “Salix” which is solely a diuretic and “Naquazone” that contains both a diuretic and a steroid. One must watch then if treating before parturition (when most beef heifers are treated) that the ”Naquazone” could induce the heifer to calve. Again this may or may not be desired so be warned and discuss it with your veterinarian. Often during treatment we will strip the heifer somewhat and check the milk for mastitis. Also if the colostrum is well formed as in thick and sticky and yellow in color there is a good argument she is close enough to induce. Sometimes bringing on the calf two to three days early may be the difference in getting the udder edema to subside. One must watch that the calf can suck as the very edematous udders are hard and it sometimes takes some massaging and warm compresses to get the milk flowing. Also the udder may be sore and there be a tendency for the heifers to kick so watch that as well. Both the treatments are quite effective at their standard dosages. Each veterinarian will have their own preferences. Each treated case will be variable in the length treated but most are not treated more than a few days. Some of the edema will gravitate forward with time and end up near the navel. Again it will gradually be reabsorbed from there so is more of a blemish at that point and not greatly significant. Most udder edema cases however in the beef industry are minor and are left to dissipate on their own as calving often occurs very shortly after the case is found. Since the edema is the result of altered circulation essentially one must also watch for the potential for frost bite in the winter months. If you are seeing many udder edema cases things like age of the heifer, degree of fat cover, genetics and potentially some nutritional specifics could be looked at. This condition illustrates how paying attention to the udder conditions can prevent in some cases serious conditions. Ruling in or out mastitis, blocked teat sphincter, chronic mastitis from dry off the year before, blood in the udder or udder edema. Lot to look for but having udder conformation and teat size as one of your selection criteria in heifers definitely helps. Have a great calving season everybody.

A new year give us all a sense of hope of possibilities for the year ahead. The start of 2021 is like no other, however, as we continue to navigate through the pandemic. As an industry, we have shown our resiliency and continue our efforts to overcome the challenges that faced us over the last nine months. We could not have fathomed a year ago how a human health issue could have such potential long-term impacts for Canadian beef producers. While we don’t know what exactly this coming year will bring, and as hard and challenging as it was in 2020, we need to remain vigilant and realistic about the pandemic’s legacy on our industry. This is not the time to become complacent. We must keep moving our industry forward to bring remain competitive on the world stage through strengthening our trade agreements, providing solutions to government to enhance the responsiveness of business risk management programs, and continuing conversations with consumers about where their food comes from and the connection between cattle and the environment, just to name a few. I believe the Canadian beef industry is poised and wellpositioned to help rebuild the Canadian economy and secure future growth. We must remain steadfast in our approach and continue to press for strategic investments to support our industry, cattle producers, and our food system. However, we can’t do this alone and need meaningful government engagement to help make this a reality. As we continue to drive our business during this unprecedented time, along with partner organizations, we are engaging in a number of measures to keep us moving forward. That is why CCA’s COVID response continues to focus on maintaining business continuity. We remain committed to ensuring that our industry can function as best as possible during these uncertain times, whether that be by keeping our borders open for trade, ensuring inspection services remained available, working with processing plants to maintain or to quickly recover capacity, and developing protocols for cattle sales and business activities. Trade is an important component of our ability to overcome the economic impacts from COVID-19. While CCA is pleased with the overall improved market access that has been attained in recent years, it is more important than ever we continue to grow our exports by enhancing current FTAs, accessing new markets and through the removal of technical trade barriers. For example, CCA foresees the U.K., our largest trading partner under CETA, as a high value market for Canadian beef. Following a transitional agreement reached in November, we are actively encouraging the Governments of Canada and the U.K. to begin negotiations as soon as possible to secure a permanent trade deal that ensures reciprocal access for beef producers. While we have experienced growth in exports, there has been even larger

growth on imports from the EU. CCA is working hard to address many of the trade barriers into the EU and is ensuring these concerns are incorporated into any agreement with the U.K. During the pandemic response, CCA has worked tirelessly to keep lines of communication open with the Government of Canada and developed solutions to Government that would provide meaningful assistance to beef producers during these uncertain times. I encourage you to continue to manage your operations as close as possible to normal, while respecting all provincial health guidelines to ensure everyone stays healthy and safe on the job. I would also ask you to continue planning ahead, such as having your bulls available for viewing ahead of the sale and utilizing digital marketing and communication as much as possible. After a number of recent announcements on new protocols to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, the resource document Guidelines for Canadian Cattle Sales in 2020-2021 was updated in late November. This resource was developed with a national focus and recommended best practice guidelines for sales. With many of these protocols being announced at the provincial and municipal level, we encourage anyone planning to attend or host a sale to refer to provincial and regional health regulations to ensure compliance. The revised guidelines are available on the CCA website www.cattle.ca located in COVID-19 Resources under the Human/Resources section. We also have a positive story to tell about the connection between cattle and the environment and through the 2030 beef goals, we can demonstrate that we are committed to continually improving our stewardship practices. A great example of this is McDonald’s Canada showing their commitment to Canadian beef producers and sustainability by highlighting sustainable beef sourcing in their Quarter Pounder® line of burgers. McDonald’s is now sourcing at least 30 per cent of the beef for the Quarter Pounder line-up from CRSB Certified Sustainable farms and ranches. I’m sure many of you have now seen a number of commercials, which helps share our sustainability story with consumers across Canada. On behalf of the Board and staff at CCA, we look forward to continuing to advocate and be the proud voice of Canadian cattle producers in 2021. Now more than ever, we are committed to keeping the lines of communication open between industry stakeholders and the Government and ultimately positively impact our producers from coast to coast. Le meilleur temps pour acheter un taureau Simmental.

onne année 2021 et bienvenue à cette première édition de l’année de la revue Commercial Country ! L’année 2020 s’est inscrite au palmarès des années les plus difficiles de notre histoire moderne, alors que nous avons tous dû faire face à de nouvelles situations et à de nombreux inconnus. Plusieurs d’entre nous ont eu de la difficulté à organiser leur quotidien et à comprendre comment et quand leur vie reviendrait à la normale, alors que les règles semblaient toujours changer. À travers cette période chambardée, plusieurs personnes sont devenues plus conscientes que jamais au niveau de notre agriculture et que la production des aliments n’avait jamais été aussi importante qu’elle est maintenant. Le circuit des ventes de veaux d’embouche de l’automne a été relativement bon, en particulier si on se souvient du contexte en avril 2020 et des nombreux défis auxquels était confrontée l’industrie bovine. Les ventes de femelles gestantes ont très bien complété l’année, alors que les producteurs vache-veau demeuraient optimistes par rapport à notre production bovine et qu’ils ajoutaient de nouvelles femelles de qualité à leurs troupeaux. Les veaux les plus lourds ont reçu des primes en comparaison aux veaux plus légers offerts en vente, et les veaux croisés Simmental sont demeurés en très grande demande peu importe leur sexe. Tout le long du circuit de l’automne 2020 des ventes de veaux d’embouche, les veaux possédant du sang de race Simmental se sont vendus à un meilleur prix que les veaux des autres races et, dans certaines régions, les vendeurs obtenaient de dix à vingt cents de plus la livre, comparativement à des veaux exclusivement de races britanniques de même poids mais qui étaient aussi plus vieux. De plus, une prime encore meilleure était payée pour un veau possédant la face “moustachée” blanche, ou si on veut la « marque de l’argent », car ce veau était définitivement issu d’un croisement avec la race Simmental. Au niveau du chèque de paie ramené à la maison par le producteur vacheveau, le poids des veaux vendus a joué un rôle encore plus important, car les veaux croisés Simmental pouvaient peser

cent (100) livres de plus que les veaux de races anglaises, et que cela représentait un revenu additionnel de 200 $ par veau. Les producteurs ne se sont pas plaints vraiment au début d’octobre quand ils obtenaient 1500 $ par veau. En fait, les acheteurs recherchaient des veaux croisés Simmental et ils payaient une prime pour les acheter, car ils savaient que les veaux de qualité croisés Simmental produits en ce moment s’engraissent facilement et qu’ils produisent des carcasses possédant tous les attributs de poids, de grosseur et de classement demandés par le marché actuel. Les ventes de femelles de race Simmental ont également été très bonnes, tandis que certaines étaient diffusées en ligne alors que d’autres se déroulaient sous la forme d’enchères chronométrées. Tandis que le format de ces ventes n’était pas celui qu’on était habitué de vivre, les résultats de plusieurs ventes sont tout de même très bons et il se pourrait bien que certaines ventes de taureaux se déroulent de manière semblable le printemps prochain. Ces ventes ont bien fonctionné car il était possible d’aller voir les animaux à l’avance, puis on pouvait profiter de la technologie actuelle afin de miser en ligne et dans le confort de notre domicile, ou bien on pouvait confier nos commandes d’achat aux divers agents de vente qualifiés. Personne ne sait vraiment comment vont débuter les premières ventes de taureaux en 2021, mais un fait demeure, les producteurs vache-veau devront encore améliorer leurs groupes de taureaux et la demande pour des taureaux Simmental de qualité sera de nouveau très forte. Bons et moins bons investissements avec les mesures par les ultrasons.
L
e titre de cet article pourrait aussi être bonnes et moins bonnes façons de dépenser votre argent. Dans la plupart des entreprises, le temps et l’argent sont des facteurs limitants. Bien que la technologie des ultrasons puisse éventuellement contribuer à générer des bénéfices, il demeure très important d’essayer de maximiser la valeur obtenue grâce à un investissement dans les mesures par les ultrasons. Bons investissements: 1. Recueillir des données selon les normes de “UGC – Ultrasound Guidelines Council” chez des bovins entre 270 et 500 jours d’âge. Si on veut que les données soient utilisées dans l’évaluation génétique (pour obtenir les ÉPD sur les carcasses), les mesures sur les bovins et la lecture des images doivent être faites par des techniciens certifiés par « UGC ». Votre technicien accrédité peut vous aider dans vos démarches. Cette exigence est là en fait pour vous assurer que les données seront recueillies de manière appropriée, qu’elles seront de grande qualité et qu’elles pourront être employées pour les fins d’évaluation génétique. En raison des relations entre les données mesurées par les ultrasons et les caractéristiques des carcasses des bovins d’engraissement, il est aussi important que les mesures soient prises à l’intérieur d’un écart d’âge approprié. Certaines normes sont illustrées dans le Tableau 1. 2. Transmission de vos données de performance à l’ASC Les données mesurées par les ultrasons viennent s’ajouter aux données de performance actuelles telles que sur les généalogies, la date de naissance et les informations recueillies au sevrage. Avant de faire mesurer vos animaux avec les ultrasons, il est important que ceux-ci possèdent des données de performance complètes. Il est tout aussi important que vous ayez transmis à l’ASC l’information sur les autres veaux ayant été réformé au sevrage, afin que les résultats des mesures par ultrasons puissent être interprétés d’après le troupeau complet. 3. Faire mesurer des groupes complets de bovins La prise de mesures par les ultrasons sur des groupes complets de bovins est un excellent investissement. Cela nous permet d’obtenir les données les plus utiles pour les fins d’évaluation et de comparaison, et cela nous aide à obtenir un portrait des carcasses du troupeau complet. 4. Faire mesurer les femelles de remplacement Voici un très bon investissement qui est souvent négligé. Alors que plusieurs éleveurs font mesurer leurs taureaux pour des raisons de marketing, la prise de meures chez les candidates à garder comme femelles de remplacement contribue à nous fournir un portrait rapide des mérites des carcasses au sein de tout le cheptel reproducteur. En fait, en plus d’obtenir des données de performance pour les femelles entrant dans le troupeau, cela veut dire que plusieurs des vaches en production obtiendront des données sur leurs descendants. En dressant ainsi le profil des caractéristiques des carcasses du troupeau complet, on peut effectuer des accouplements sélectifs orientés selon les objectifs de notre programme d’élevage. De plus, les génisses ont tendance à exprimer des différences supérieures au niveau du persillage que les taureaux, et celles-ci peuvent nous fournir des informations très valides pour les fins d’évaluation génétique. 5. Annoncez que vous faites mesurer vos animaux avec les ultrasons La promotion de vos efforts est un bon investissement. Plusieurs producteurs commerciaux ne vous demanderont probablement pas vos données des mesures par ultrasons, ils n’iront d’ailleurs pas à votre vente. Les producteurs commerciaux peuvent avoir accès à des primes importantes lorsqu’ils produisent des bovins avec une génétique de grande qualité pour les caractères liés aux carcasses, et plusieurs de ceux-là en sont bien conscients. Les marques de poils tondus par un technicien accrédité UGC sont en fait des marques d’excellence pour vos bovins et votre programme.

Investissements pas si bons: 1. Faire mesurer les taureaux adultes, les taureaux de deux ans et les veaux sevrés Il n’est pas rare de constater que des mesures par ultrasons ont été prises chez des sujets dont l’âge se situe en-dehors des écarts recommandés. La valeur d’une mesure par ultrasons repose en fait sur sa relation avec les caractéristiques des carcasses des bovins finis. Voici pourquoi les écarts d’âge prennent de l’importance. En d’autres mots, en faisant mesurer un taureau de sept ans pour déterminer les mérites de sa carcasse est totalement inutile et représente une perte d’argent. Il n’y a pas beaucoup de bovins d’engraissement âgés de sept ans. 2. Faire mesurer uniquement quelques veaux sélectionnés Cela peut sembler une bonne idée pour certaines personnes de faire mesurer uniquement quelques veaux sélectionnés. Ce serait en fait un meilleur investissement de renoncer complètement à faire mesurer vos animaux, plutôt que de commencer à choisir les sujets qui seront mesurés. Si on ne fait mesurer que des groupes incomplets d’animaux, cela nous empêche alors d’avoir de bonnes bases de comparaison, et cela peut occasionner des biais dans notre sélection. C’est également pour cette raison qu’il est important de bien déclarer tous les veaux au moment du sevrage. Lorsqu’on rapporte toute l’information au sevrage, on peut tenir compte lors de l’évaluation génétique de situations de sélection préliminaire telles que par exemple pour des veaux castrés en période de post-sevrage. En ne faisant mesurer que des groupes sélectionnés de sujets, on ne contribue pas à construire la base de données pour le futur. Faire mesurer uniquement ses veaux mâles pourrait être un bon exemple. Avec une telle approche, on n’obtiendra pas les mêmes bénéfices futurs que si on avait fait mesurer tous nos veaux. Si une vache produit une génisse qui a été mesurée cette année par les ultrasons, celle-ci devrait vraisemblablement obtenir une évaluation sur sa carcasse, en raison de cette donnée sur une progéniture. Cette donnée pourra être utilisée l’année prochaine lors de l’évaluation génétique, tandis qu’elle pourrait donner naissance à un veau mâle. Même si un éleveur a fait mesurer ses veaux mâles, il peut arriver que certains taureaux offerts en vente n’aient pas d’ÉPD sur les carcasses. 3. Ne pas transmettre ses données de performance à l’ASC Les données mesurées par les ultrasons viennent s’additionner aux données de performance. Si on ne déclare pas les données à la naissance, la généalogie ou les informations sur les performances, on ne pourra pas utiliser les données mesurées par les ultrasons pour des fins d’évaluation génétique, et on ne pourra pas produire de valeurs ajustées selon l’âge, de rangs, d’indices, de rapports sommaire sur les taureaux, etc. La déclaration des données de performance sur des groupes complets de bovins demeure la clé afin d’en obtenir le plus pour votre argent investi dans les mesures par les ultrasons. 4. Utiliser des ultrasons sans la certification « UGC » La prise de mesures d’ultrasons non certifiées par UGC vient grandement limiter les possibilités d’utiliser ces données. En fait, de telles données recueillies sans la certification UGC ne peuvent pas être employées pour l’évaluation génétique. En d’autres mots, aucun ÉPD sur les carcasses ne peut être généré avec de telles données. De plus, cela veut aussi dire qu’il n’est pas possible d’obtenir des rapports avec des valeurs ajustées selon l’âge, des rangs, des indices, des rapports sommaires sur les taureaux. Les données mesurées par les ultrasons selon le processus d’UGC nécessitent quelques étapes additionnelles, toutefois cela représente un bon investissement en temps et en argent pour ceux qui ont choisi de faire mesurer leurs animaux. A
s we reflect on the year 2020, it will not be soon forgotten. It now appears that the pandemic will continue deep into 2021 and we need to be prepared for this as an industry and in our daily lives. We tend to focus on the negative aspects of COVID and there are certainly a lot, but we also need to recognize the success in our industry where we have been fortunate. As we all remember, the pandemic hit in the middle of the bull sale season. Producers adapted and complied with ever changing restrictions and uncertainty. Sales continued with prices being similar to the previous year which showed the strength of our producers and their steadfast resolve while facing adversity. Agriculture was designated an essential service which allowed our cattle sales to continue but it also allowed for uninterrupted trade with the USA, our largest trading partner. The exchange of beef, semen, embryos and live cattle with the US are critical to the stability of our market. There were many more successes through the year that we can be proud of as an industry and on personal levels. As we look forward to 2021, there are several ongoing initiatives that will be important to the industry. We will need to be flexible and adjust our international market development program in response to changing market conditions due to the COVID pandemic. This is a collaborative effort across breed associations, livestock exporters, livestock exhibitions, agricultural service providers and breeders to promote and generate sales of beef genetics both internationally and at home in Canada. The disruption in our industry through the cancellation of our livestock events will have ripple effects and we will need to re-establish our connection with international buyers and government officials in foreign countries. It is likely that travel will still be restricted well into 2021, so we will need to continually improve and utilize our online

and digital marketing programs in order to accomplish this. This will be one of the most important investments that our industry organizations and breeders can make at this time in order to showcase our genetics to the world. The Canadian Beef Improvement Network initiative is entering a new phase in its development. It is supported by the major breed associations and has participation from across the production and retail system. As a division of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association and the hub for the seedstock sector, CBBC will serve as the incubator for CBIN to ensure its successful implementation. The next phase of CBIN will include increased advocacy efforts to industry stakeholders and development of its core foundation. A goal of CBIN is to build upon existing genetic improvement programs with a focus on the commercial cattle sector. The commercial cow/calf sector has always been an integral part of genetic improvement through bull selection but have never been actively included in the development programs offered by the seedstock sector. There is an opportunity through the CBIN platform to connect the industry with a made in Canada solution. When this bull was young we overlooked him because of a little more white on him but it wasn’t long before he was a stand out. No wonder he is stacked with a long line of our favorite females so we turned down all the offers and used him ourselves. Very smooth fronted, wide back, deep ribbed with a full and deep hind quarter, good feet and legs plus good temperament. Looks like a heifer calver. His sire needs no introduction and is now proven to be successful in all categories. If enough interest is expressed we would consider semen collection. Kaiser was used heavily in our program this past breeding season. His 1st calves arrive in 2021.

Bailey McCormack is 17 and currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Science program at the University of Regina. She calls Grenfell, Saskatchewan home where she is actively involved with her family’s purebred Simmental and Angus operation at McCormack Family Ranch. Bailey’s participation in 4-H the last twelve years led to her involvement in the Simmental breed and she is incredibly thankful for the opportunities it has presented her with. Bailey took a position on the Saskatchewan Young Canadian Simmental Association executive board around five years ago but has been showing Simmental cattle all her life. Bailey is grateful to have been able to attend multiple provincial shows as well as two national shows where she made many friendships and met the future of the Simmental breed! Bailey would like to say a heartfelt thank you to the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation for their contribution to her future and she hopes to one day be able to give back to youth like herself!

Sadie Anwender is from Radville, Saskatchewan where her family owns and operates Anwender Cattle Company along with her own herd: Me ‘N My Simmentals & Shorthorns. Sadie has grown up in the industry and been an active member of many junior programs at provincial and national levels. She kept busy with many sports, volunteering and leadership groups while in high school. Sadie has been involved in the Simmental breed since purchasing her first purebred female in 2013. She most enjoys the camaraderie and enthusiasm for advancement within the breed. She is currently a director on the Saskatchewan YCSA. This fall, Sadie entered her third year of Business Administration at the University of Regina. She plans to pursue an accounting major with hopes to one day operate her own business. Sadie looks forward to continually growing her herd in both breeds. She is appreciative of the foundation for awarding these funds and would like to thank all who donate throughout the year to make the scholarships possible.
Jessica Sperber
Jessica Sperber is currently working toward a PhD in Ruminant Nutrition at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, her research focuses on feeder cattle nutrition and greenhouse gas emissions. Jessica was raised on a cow-calf and grain operation in central Alberta and completed her MS at West Texas A&M University in Meat Science and Beef Carcass Quality. Jessica currently serves as the Vice President of the Young Cattlemen’s Council and was a 2016 Cattlemen’s Young Leader. She hopes to use her technical expertise and training to obtain a career with an allied industry partner in the beef sector. Jessica has extensive interest in feeder cattle growth and aspires to explore innovative ways to feed the ever-growing population while continuing to produce the same high-quality beef that consumers love. Jessica wants to thank the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation for their generous support of young beef industry professionals.
Ryan Edwards Ryan Edwards and his family runs a purebred and percentage Simmental operation just east of Strathmore, Alberta. Their operation heavily utilized artificial insemination and embryo transplant to improve the quality of their herd. Ryan’s family consigns a few calves each year into sales. Ryan is currently attending the University of Calgary where he is studying biology and chemistry, looking to focus more into animal biology. Ryan would like to take this opportunity to thank Friends of the Canadian Simmental Foundation for recognizing the importance of supporting youth and for giving him the opportunity to further his education.

Jacey Massey is 18 years old and from Strathmore, Alberta, Canada. She has grown up showing and raising purebred Simmental cattle with her parents, Tim and Derri Massey. Jacey has also recently started her own herd of purebred Hereford cattle. Jacey has thoroughly enjoyed owning and operating New Trend Cattle Company alongside her parents. She has developed a deep passion for the livestock industry through these endeavors and they have molded her into who she is today and has also greatly impacted her future as well. Jacey is currently furthering her passion for the industry at Hutchinson Community College where she is working towards her Associates Degree in Art with an emphasis in Agriculture Communications and is also on the Livestock Judging Team. After receiving her degree in Hutchinson, Jacey plans on transferring to either Kansas State University or Oklahoma State University to further her education and to continue her career on a competitive collegiate livestock judging team. Jacey would like to thank Friends of the Canadian Simmental Foundation and the Vance Family for granting her this great honor in receiving this scholarship.
