Director’s Report
SHA
by Stephen Myer
Happy New Year my fellow Hereford Enthusiasts! It was a busy end of 2019 for Hereford Breeders in Saskatchewan. Fall production sales ramped up in our province in the last half of October. Demand was steady again this year for an exceptional group of Hereford females for sale. These sales are a very important part of maintaining our Hereford influence in the national cattle herd. Many new herds have started from these sales and I hope there are continual years of successful sales. The 49th Agribition Show featured the Canadian National Hereford Shows again this year. There were 254 Polled and 46 Horned Hereford cattle shown. Congrats to Polled Hereford Grand Champion Bull exhibitor Haroldson’s Polled Herefords of Wawota, SK (Haroldson’s United 33D 36G also went on to be one of two calves chosen in the top 10 in the RBC Beef Supreme Show), Horned Hereford Grand Champion Bull exhibitor Big Gully Farm of Maidstone, SK with Big-Gully 109 Espionage 181G, Polled Hereford Grand Champion Female exhibitor Remitall West of Olds, AB with Remitall-W Belle ET 45F (with additional owner Medonte Highlands), and Horned Hereford Grand Champion Female exhibitor Rocking G Land and Cattle Co. of Gull Lake, SK with RG 5511 Rocket ET 702E with calf at side RG 5369 Triton 932G. Congrats and thank you to all exhibitors, volunteers, and attendants for making the 2019 show another great one. A special plug to Corey Lees and Lyal and Michelle Heidecker for organization of the show and the Hereford booth in the halter barn. Other Hereford events at Agribition included the National Hereford Sale, Red Coat Classic Heifer Draw, and the Stock Exchange activities. The National Sale had a solid offering of genetics that sold well and all across North America. The high seller was Glenlees 5D Humboldt 1F sired by Haroldson’s Totem, which
sold for $27,500 (½ interest, ½ possession) to Topp Herefords, Grace City, ND. The Red Coat Heifer Draw is the main fundraiser for the Saskatchewan Hereford Association. Thank You to The Cliffs Farm for providing this year’s main prize which was won by Ryan Hurlburt of Saskatoon, SK. Cudos to the Red Coat committee with Matt Lohner running helm, all those that helped sell tickets, and all the door prize donators for making the event a huge success. Agribition’s Commercial Barn, labelled the Stock Exchange consists of the Commercial Cattle, Bull Pen Alley, and the Yards. It housed eleven pens of Hereford or Hereford influence cattle. The Champion Pen of Hereford Bulls was won by Big Gully Farm of Maidstone, SK. The Grand Champion Pen of Open Replacement Heifers was won by Jackson Family Farm Ltd. of Humboldt, SK with a group of five black brockle faced heifers that were 25% Hereford. It was my job and pleasure to run the Hereford Booth in the commercial barn and liaison with the commercial producers and bull pen alley committee. The 50th Agribition Show next fall will have a special $50,000 Hereford Bull Jackpot Show happening Friday evening, December 4, in the Chevrolet GMC Arena that will feature some of the top Hereford genetics in the world. There will be food and beverage provided. It will be a great way to kickoff the next 50 years and a new decade! Directly after Agribition we got into another, albeit lighter, sale run and of course it will carry on at the end of January and well into the new year. Best of luck to all who have Hereford genetics up for sale and to those in the pursuit of upgrades to their programs. Best wishes to everyone with calving and the spring bull sale season. Two Hereford Enthusiasts To Be Inducted Into The Saskatchewan Agricultural Hall Of Fame
John Feige
Ted Serhienko
The late John Feige (posthumously), Parkvista Hereford Farm and Ted Serhienko, T Bar C Cattle Co. will be inducted into the Saskatchewan Agricultural Hall of Fame in April. No stranger to the Hereford industry, John Feige bred and raised superior Horned Herefords in Saskatchewan near Parkside. In addition, he was a dedicated volunteer in his community, 4-H and the Hereford breed. In 1991, Feige received the Cattleman of the Year Award and the Saskatchewan Livestock Association Honor Roll in 1995. Ted Serhienko has a long history in the livestock industry locally, provincially, nationally and internationally. He has judged cattle at Canadian Western Agribition, the Toronto Royal Winter Fair, and in the USA, in addition, many 4-H and junior
shows. He founded T Bar C Cattle Co., successfully marketing livestock for nearly a half century. He was a volunteer at Canadian Western Agribition for over three decades and brought his leadership to Prairieland Park Agricultural programs as an active volunteer and served on the Prairieland Park Board of Directors. The Saskatchewan Hereford Association is proud to have sponsored the nomination of these great men. Both inductees have also been recognized on the Canadian Hereford Association Honor Roll. In addition to Feige and Serhienko, Honorable Gerry Ritz, Adele Buettner, Jack Hay and Eileen and William Lamont round out the 2020 field of inductees.

Polled Hereford Bull Sets A “New Era” Record
Haroldson’s United 33D 36G bred and owned by Chad Wilson, Haroldson’s Polled Herefords, Wawota, Saskatchewan captured the President’s Classic, an all breeds bull calf competition presented by Semex Beef and was the first Hereford bull calf to be a top 10 finalist in the RBC Supreme at Agribition. He was declared Junior Bull Calf Champion and then went on to win Canadian National Grand Champion Polled Hereford Bull. Immediately after the show, judge Jason Hoffman, Thedford, Nebraska purchased a share in this great, young prospect. This March 5th bull calf weighed 1085 lbs. with a WPDA of 4.02 lbs.
The bull was entered in Premier & Guests Falls View Production Sale, Niagara Falls, Ontario on December 28, offering a 1/3 interest in the bull calf. The final bid was $215,000.00 and the purchaser was Tanya Belsham, Poplar Meadows Angus, Houston, British Columbia. Winners are commonplace for Tanya as Poplar Meadows exhibited the Grand Champion Female in the all breeds 2019 Agribition First Lady Classic, the Grand Champion Black Angus Bull in the 2019 Agribition Angus Show and in 2015, Poplar Meadows captured the RBC Supreme Championship with their Angus bull.

Biography: Dr. Colin Palmer is an Associate Professor of Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from Nova Scotia, Dr. Palmer worked in mixed practices in Ontario and British Columbia and has owned/operated a practice in Saskatchewan. Dr. Palmer along with his wife Kim and children Lauren, Emily and Carter run a herd of purebred Red Angus cattle under the KC Cattle Co. name.
Key Points for Breeding Bull Management
Bulls are an integral part of every cow-calf operation requiring your best when it comes to their management. The work never ends around most outfits hence the tendency to find a place to park the bulls for the winter; essentially, forgetting about them until it is time to pull ‘em out, dust ‘em off and turn ‘em out to pasture. Protecting your investment and restoring him to his pre-breeding condition should be included on your management check list. Bull breeding soundness evaluations are common place in beef cattle country. Most producers realize the importance of these exams and won’t buy a bull unless he has been “semen checked.” Sperm quality is important, but really only part of the picture. Physical soundness roughly translates into the ability to breed. Feet and legs need to be in good shape, bulls need two good eyes and they need to have adequate body condition to sustain themselves throughout the breeding season. Research has shown that scrotal circumference is likely the most important indicator of fertility in the breeding soundness evaluation. Because all bull testicles are essentially the same shape, scrotal circumference can be used to calculate testicle weight. In turn, testicle weight is very highly correlated with sperm producing ability with each gram of testicular tissue accounting for the production of approximately 17 million sperm daily. Each additional centimeter (cm) of scrotal circumference is equivalent to 50 grams (g) of testicular tissue, therefore, a bull with a 30 cm scrotal circumference has 200 g of testicle, whereas a bull with 38 cm has 600 g. In other words, three times as much sperm producing ability. Which bull would you rather turn out with a bunch of cycling cows? Scrotal circumference is also related to age of puberty of daughters and lifetime fertility of those daughters. Bulls with larger scrotal circumferences have daughters that reach puberty at a younger age and those daughters are more fertile over their lifetimes. These are the cows that get bred every year and generally during the first estrous cycle of the breeding season. Bulls with smaller than the minimum acceptable scrotal circumference can still have viable sperm, but they produce less of it and are more likely to have poor quality sperm. The combination of all of these negatives can cost your herd thousands in lost opportunity for years to come.
Scrotal circumference may also be influenced by the amount of scrotal fat that is present. Fat is deposited in many areas in the body including the scrotum. At one time it was believed that any and all scrotal fat would be found in the neck of the scrotum above the testicles, but feeding and testicular development studies have shown that fat can be found in the tissues encasing the testicles. The tendency to deposit fat in the scrotum increases after a year of age and can lead to, or be related, to erroneously high scrotal circumference measurements, poor semen quality and a lack of libido. Every spring I see bulls that have “melted,” including a loss of scrotal circumference, after they have been switched to pasture or a forage-based diet. Bulls that have become fat from the feeding of high energy rations are also more likely to develop feet and leg problems later in life. Satisfactory sperm quality indicated by greater than 70% normal sperm is in most cases the most important result from the microscopic assessment of sperm. Volume of semen, concentration, sperm motility and percent live sperm can all be influenced by the collection technique; however, in most cases when there is a real problem with sperm production or quality it will be evident in the sperm morphology assessment. A well done semen assessment should include all of these parameters and more often than not one or more will support the sperm morphology findings. Every attempt should be made to examine the penis; especially, to see if it protrudes properly. Breeding bulls are prone to injury and young bulls may have warts, hair rings or congenital issues that can ruin their breeding potential. Sex drive and mating ability is often overlooked as it is impossible to assess during a routine breeding soundness evaluation. I encourage all bull owners to check bulls frequently during the breeding season to ensure that mounting and completion of the breeding process are occurring normally. If observations are made routinely and cows are cycling properly there should be no reason to discover a large number of open cows at pregnancy checking or calving. Your bulls should be evaluated annually! Prior to the breeding season is ideal, but with enough time to find

a replacement bull if one is needed. Remember, it can be really hard to find a bull in late June. Another issue I see is that some believe that the presale breeding soundness evaluation means that the bull will always remain highly fertile. Heat, stress, nutrition, toxins and genetics can influence sperm production with very serious insults to sperm production requiring months to recover from or in extreme cases causing permanent sterility. Hard working bulls normally lose some condition throughout the breeding season, but excessive weight loss should be avoided. It is common for bulls, especially those with a body condition score in excess of 7 to 7.5 (9-point scale), or 4.0 (5-point scale) to lose up to 2 cm of scrotal circumference between the beginning and end of breeding season. Breeding seasons of not more than two or three months are not only important for calving management, but also provide several months to restore condition for the next breeding season. Encouraging weighing and body condition scoring of bulls is a sound practice on any operation. Breeding bulls should have a body condition score of 6 to 7 (9-point scale), or 3.5 (5-point scale) at the onset of the breeding season. In my opinion, Charolais, Angus and Hereford bulls with an average frame size and aged between 2 and 4 years, should weigh in the range of 1800 to 2100 pounds (820 to 950 kg) at the time of turnout and sport the look of a well-muscled athlete. Too heavy and they are more prone to feet and leg injury; too light and they will not have enough condition to sustain themselves throughout the breeding season. Bulls will
usually consume 30 to 50 percent more feed than cows; therefore, the risk of bloat is compounded, especially, if feed quality or quantity are inconsistent. Depending on a combination of breed, individual characteristics and ranch management, overfeeding can be as much of a problem as underfeeding. Selection for “easy fleshing” animals has undoubtedly resulted in mature animals that will gain weight with surprisingly limited resources; especially if they are sedentary. Minerals and vitamins are essential to proper nutrition. Deficiencies of zinc, and vitamins A and E have been shown to have a direct, negative effect on testicular function. Other deficiencies may have an indirect effect via disturbances in hormone production that are integral to the regulation of sperm production. In cold climates, consideration must be given to increasing feed quantity and quality during winter months as maintenance requirements dictate. All bulls, but especially those younger than 2 ½ to 3 years and therefore still growing, will often benefit from a pelleted supplement fed as part of a balanced ration. Providing easy access to fresh water at all times will help maintain bulls in adequate condition. Limiting water will also limit feed intake and having to walk a considerable distance to water will use additional energy. Adequate bedding and shelter from the wind are crucial for preventing scrotal frost bite. Don’t forget about vaccination and parasite control. Bulls should receive the same vaccinations as the cow herd and the same treatments for internal and external parasites.

Social Media Shorty had had a long day. He had spent the last 10 hours gathering, then moving a large herd of cow calf pairs into the ranch’s high-altitude range, and there were plenty more to move tomorrow. Still…he was in no hurry to get to the house. Shorty’s wife Cathy had reminded him last night that her best friend Sandi was coming to visit and, well Sandi with an “I” was kind of a pain in the ass. Fortunately, she only came for a visit when she had a relationship break up, unfortunately she had nearly as many of those as she has tattoos. Shorty figured nobody over an age that ended in teen or started with “t” should be getting tattoos, but Sandi disagreed. The ranch rocket rolled to a stop in front of the house, and before Shorty could shut the door, Sandi was there to greet him. “Shorty!” She had her arms outstretched as she ran towards him. “Sandi.” Shorty was somewhat less enthusiastic, but politely accepted her hug. He couldn’t help but notice the tattooed bluebird perched on her left front just visible above her neckline. “You like it?” Sandi was pointing at the bluebird. “I just got it a couple of weeks ago…” her voice was less enthusiastic now, “I got it after Dwayne left.” Shorty had no idea who or what ‘Dwayne’ was but played along.
“Is that an eastern bluebird or a mountain bluebird?” Shorty didn’t really care, but he needed to kill time until his wife arrived. “I dunno… I will Google it!” Sandi pulled her phone out of her shorts and set out to answer Shorty’s pressing question. “Hey.. did you see on Facebook that Rick and his wife broke up? I couldn’t believe it!” “No” Shorty’s answer was concise. “Well they did!” “Ah Sandi? Shorty doesn’t do Facebook.” Cathy had finally arrived. “What!!! You don’t do Facebook? Shorty! How do you know how many friends you have? How do you get the news? You don’t do Facebook… unbelievable!” “Well Sandi, I count my friends on my fingers, usually on one hand and I get my news the old-fashioned way from the TV and radio. Cathy will let me know if anything earth shattering happens that doesn’t make the news media.” “Oh Shorty… social media is the only way to go. It is the way of the future Shorty, you have to get with it. I would be lost without my phone, I use it for everything!” “Do you use for talking?” “Of course! I talked to Cathy this morning. I mostly text, but I talk too.” Sandi was studying her phone
Cattle Call 28

intently now, scrolling furiously. “I think it is a mountain, no eastern… no mountain, yup definitely mountain… or eastern.” She held her phone in her left hand for Shorty and Cathy to see and pointed to the bluebird tattoo. “That looks like the one on the left right? Yeah the one on the right and that is a mountain bluebird.” Cathy quietly nodded her approval, Shorty had spent way too much time looking at a bluebird tattoo. He figured by the time Sandi hit fifty, that bluebird would look like a cartoon vulture and he really didn’t want to see that either. “I can’t believe you don’t do Facebook Shorty… that is so weird!” “Well Sandi, I figure that Facebook is a great place for people with nothing to say to prove just that.”
Shorty wasn’t quite sure why he went on that little rant, but it had shut Sandi up. She was standing there, quietly putting her phone back into her short’s pocket. She looked sad. “Shorty.” Cathy was…well staring at her husband. “Play nice!” “You know girls… I have a lot of time to think when I am out there,” Shorty motioned towards the range, “ and I never once think that anyone else other than my horse and dog need to hear about what I think. I just doesn’t really matter, what I think and come to think of it most of what I think is pretty mundane. So, I will keep it where it belongs…in my head.” Shorty had enough of the chatter and turned towards the house. “Sandi… I have seven.”
“Shorty! It is more than that, there is always something happening that people need to know about…”
“Seven what Shorty?”
“Really? I know one thing, Sandi… if something happens to someone in my family, a car wreck or something, I want to hear about it from a family member or the police before I hear about it on Facebook. Come to think about it, the same goes for Google. Google is probably great for finding the nearest Dairy Queen, not so good for finding out why you have a lump on your neck. I just think that people are putting too much faith in the internet these days. Society would function with much more integrity if people used their phones to talk to their real friends then to count their Facebook friends.”
“Does that count me Shorty?”
“Seven friends.” Shorty wasn’t sure if Sandi was serious or not, but he didn’t hesitate. “Nope… counting the dog and two of those horses I ride…stuck on seven.” Shorty never looked back, seven was probably high, but it was way more than the number of his tattoos.
Grant Rolston was born and raised in ranching country near Penticton, British Columbia. After graduating school, he worked on a purebred Hereford ranch, then assumed a position at Western Breeders Artificial Insemination Unit. In 1980, he left the livestock scene and joined the Edmonton Police Department, where he received his formal training in photography, working for the IDENT unit (crime scene investigation). After a decade, he returned to the industry, purchasing a herd of purebred Angus cattle but both Grant and his wife, Lauralee, worked off the ranch to make a living. He chose livestock photography and is now Canada’s premier livestock photographer of beef cattle. Grant and Lauralee travel throughout nine provinces in Canada for on farm photography, in addition to all major livestock shows, including the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, the Canadian Western Agribition and all major National Junior shows in the summer months. Grant and Lauralee Rolston reside in Vulcan, Alberta. With four decades of experience, Grant shares things that are “Not Taken for Granted.” Cattle Call 29

Director’s Profile
SHA
by Kristina Just
This past June, I was newly elected as a director to your Saskatchewan Hereford Association. Over the past 10 years or so, I have had the pleasure of getting to know many of you through the various Junior Association shows and production sales. I live and work on a mixed farm just west of Yorkton, right along Hwy 16. We are very easy to find with a windmill, red equipment and Hereford cattle. This farm has been in my husbands’ family for three generations, our children plan on continuing with the farm. I was born in Ontario and moved to Manitoba when I was five. My father was an RCMP officer so we were transferred to a number of communities throughout my youth. In 1990, I followed in his footsteps joining the RCMP as a police officer. My career took me to Milestone, Pelican Narrows, Yorkton and Melville. I met my husband in Yorkton and joined the Just Family farm in 1998. We have three children, Jillian, Emma and Matthew. I continued with the RCMP until my retirement in 2010 at the rank of Corporal. From there I became more involved in the daily farming operations, in particular, the livestock side of the farm. In 2015, I became a director on the South East Hereford Zone Board.
ratio of 1/3 purebred to 2/3 commercial.
I may be new to the Hereford breed compared to many but I have been sold on their docility and functionality. In my area of the province, there is still mistrust and misinformation about our breed with prolapse, poor milk and pinkeye issues. There has always been a Hereford Bull on our farm with a I hope to use my position as a director to promote Herefords small group of commercial cattle. We purchased our first and the benefits of hybrid vigor Herefords will bring when purebred Hereford cattle in 2010 from the Jim Millham crossed with other breeds. herd dispersal sale and Garnet Keller’s herd reduction sale. In 2011, we attended our first Junior Bonanza show Kristina Just in Saskatoon. Our herd has now grown to 70 head with a
