Director’s Report

Hello fellow cattle enthusiasts. Welcome to the newly designed publication of the Saskatchewan Hereford Association! As the board of directors continues on with trying to fill the shoes of our General Manager position, we continue with transitioning programs and communication so we can handle things as a team. There is still a lot of work to be done!

First off, I’d like to congratulate our new President, Lyal Heidecker; Vice President, Matt Lohner and our two new board members, Kristina Just and Carl Ramsay, on their new SHA positions. Lance Leachman joins the Canadian Hereford Association as a representative of Saskatchewan. A big thank you to all who attended our annual meeting back in June. We had great participation and communication from the membership to the board and vice versa.

Thank you to outgoing SHA board members, Dale Shillington and Lance Leachman and CHA representative, Doug Mann, for your time and commitment to the breed. As outgoing SHA President, I’d like to thank the board members and past General Manager, Marilyn Charlton, for their support over my three years of serving as chairman. My final Presidential act is this report up until and including to past AGM. Back in June from the 9th to 11th, I attended the Saskatchewan Stock Growers AGM and convention in Moose Jaw with the CHA booth. This was on a cost share initiative between the SHA/CHA to make it to one of our Provincial cattle conventions on an annual basis, to keep up on policy development and have a Hereford presence. The event was very well planned and had a number of informative speakers and exhibitors in the trade show. Everyone should try to attend these sessions periodically.

I know it’s hard to get off the farm but it opens your eyes to the debates going on in our industry. I was able to do a lot of networking and met some new folks that have passion for our red and whites. The conference had over 200 attendants.

The Saskatchewan Hereford Association Annual General Meeting was held June 21, 2019 at the Davidson Communiplex Lounge. There were 22 voting members in attendance. The 2018 financial statements were approved as compiled by Wheatland Accounting. For 2019, the board of directors will be completing and signing off on an internal audit to meet our non-profit reporting requirements, instead of paying an accountant to do a compilation. Stephen Scott gave a detailed report on the programs at the national level. Corey Lees reported on Agribition. Chris Lees is the new President of CWA and Stephen Scott is now a director. Our judge for the 2019 National Show is Jason Hoffman of Nebraska. Matt Lohner reported that The Cliffs Farm will be donating the Red Coat Heifer this year. Tickets will be available for the same prices as last year at Agribition. There was discussion on adding incentives for Hereford influence cattle entered in the commercial show at Agribition. Rob O’Connor reported for the Promotions and Advertising Committee. The buyers

appreciation event at Ag In Motion is going forward again and breeders can get tickets for their people with a sponsorship of the Beef Producers Brunch. The SHA board will be running the hospitality room at Bonanza in Weyburn and for $100, breeders can put out promotional products for attendants. The committee is also interested in starting a heifer calf futurity show to create a new market for heifer calf prospects and promote the breed.

The SHA will once again be offering a mentorship program with applications for mentees and mentors to be in by the end of 2019. Stephen Myer reported on website traffic as well as uptake of the 4-H promotional program, both of which have been good. There was discussion as to what could be done to commemorate the 50th Annual Agribition. The board is hoping to work with CWA to make the 2020 event special. Morgan Millham reported for the Sask Junior Association, with the highlight being a large number of entries of cattle and kids for Bonanza. Election results: by private ballot returning to the SHA board are Corey Lees and Rob O’Connor, new board members are Kristina Just and Carl Ramsay, filling the third spot for Saskatchewan on the CHA is Lance Leachman, all positions are three year terms. Two resolutions were voted on.

Resolution 1: “Given that it is increasingly difficult to recruit new members to run for the directorship on the SHA. Be it resolved that the SHA board be decreased by 2 members.”

DEFEATED. Resolution 2: “Given that the SHA no longer has a General Manager and the affairs of the Association are being overseen in a more hands on approach. Be it resolved that the SHA adopt a number of committees to oversee various duties as decided by the Board and every director will be appointed to a committee by the President.” ADOPTED. The Clinton and Daryl Brost Families of Consul, SK were nominated as the 2019 Saskatchewan Hereford Association Commercial Breeders of the Year. There was discussion on where to go with the Cattle Call Publication. In his President’s Report, Stephen Myer thanked everyone for attending and urged everyone to participate in programs, use stringent selection and use effective communication for breed promotion.

Following the AGM the current SHA board of directors had a meeting. They elected new President: Lyal Heidecker, Vice President: Matt Lohner, decided to use Today’s Publishing for our provincial magazine’s printing, mailing and publishing and increased Cattle Call advertising rates to make the publication self sufficient.

Saskatchewan Hereford Association at Ag In Motion

The Saskatchewan Hereford Association was well represented at the 2019 Ag In Motion at Langham, SK this year. With the shows growing popularity, it is the perfect venue to show off the quality and versatility of our breed.

The booth was staffed by members of the SHA executive to greet and answer questions from those who stopped by our booth for a visit. On display we had a pen consisting of a bull and two bred heifers that were supplied by Lone Pine Cattle of Vibank, SK. We had some swag, breeder directories and pamphlets to hand out.

Our booth was busy all three days of the show but an increase in traffic was evident on Wednesday or “Beef Day� where forums were designated to the beef cattle industry. Most of our visitors were from Saskatchewan but we also met people from Manitoba and Alberta.

There was a definite interest from other countries such as Scotland, New Zealand and Germany. President Lyal Heidecker met with Ambassador Akylbek Kamaldinov and First Secretary Shokan Omarov of the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Canada.

Plans are being made to increase and improve our booth for the 2020 Ag In Motion Show. As Hereford breeders, we all know the quality of and benefits to raising purebred Hereford cattle and how much crossing our Herefords with other breeds improves the quality of those breeds with hybrid vigor. Ag In Motion gives us the perfect venue to educate other livestock producers on those qualities and benefits.

This will open up new market opportunities and customers for our Hereford breeders to sell bulls and heifer packages.

Concussion Protocol The phone call happened late one Tuesday evening and caught Shorty by surprise and napping.

“Shorty… it’s Mutt. You off on the weekend?”

“Yeah… why?”

“The high school rodeo is on and I am supposed to get somebody to run a couple of gates.”

Shorty’s mind was starting to spool up. How could he get out of this one? Maybe Cathy could bail him out…

“Cathy is gonna help at the concession, so you will probably be there anyway.”

“I guess I could swing a gate or two.” Shorty’s mind was working overtime now… had Cathy said anything about this? He was sure she had, he just hadn’t paid any attention.

So that is how Shorty ended up working the out gate on the Friday evening performance. It was pretty mundane stuff, the high school cowboys mostly weren’t the best of cowboys and the stock was nasty. The rough stock had won every round so far and there was only bull riding left.

Mutt had joined Shorty at the out gate to watch his daughter barrel race. Mutt, whose given name was Larry, worked a ranch not far from Shorty. Shorty had asked about the name Mutt and Mutt explained that his older brother was Jeff and when he came along his dad called him Mutt as a joke and it stuck.

Mutt was a good dad and he loved his two bull riding sons, Ryder and Ripley. He was awful proud of those boys and Mutt spent all summer hauling them to rodeo,

after rodeo, after rodeo. His wife, Lauren, hauled their only daughter all summer chasing cans and occasionally everyone showed up in the same place. This was one of those occasions.

Ripley was up first and he had drawn a bull that he had tried to ride a few times, but failed. The bull, Two Bar Oscar, was a big Black Angus cross with a bad attitude.

Rip nodded and Oscar shot out of the chute like he was on a mission. Rip had a good seat and looked like he was good to go, at least for the first 4 or 5 seconds. At the 5 second mark, Oscar shifted hard to the right and Rip carried on straight. Ripley hit the ground hard, head first.

Shorty noticed right away the lack of movement from Ripley. The bull on the other hand had spun around and was looking directly at the discarded bull rider. The bull fighters were trying their level best to distract Two Bar Oscar and Shorty was sprinting towards the fallen cowboy. He took up a position between the bull and rider and hoped the bull fighters, who had been joined by the pick up guys, could keep the bull away.

“Rip! Are you with me? Rip!” Shorty glanced over his shoulder and saw Mutt had arrived.

Ripley was starting to stir. The arena had been cleared and Mutt was joined by the rodeo director, Art. Art had been there before. “Ripley just stay still, we have to get the paramedics to have a look at you.” “ Geez Art… he’ll be okay. He’s breathin’ and he is tougher than he looks.” Mutt was pleading with Art, but Art would have nothing to do with it.

“Look Mutt, I have to make sure that these kids don’t get hurt. My arena, my rules.”

Mutt stood up and turned away. “Shit Shorty, the boys are up at Lone Pine in the slack tonight, I can’t be late for that.” Both Mutt and Shorty watched as two paramedics trotted across the arena. One of them carried a plastic kit, the other a backboard.

The first paramedic was kneeling beside Ripley.

“Son what’s your name?” There was no response from Rip and that seemed to amp up the concern. “Son can you hear me? What is your name?”

“Yeah I hear you.” Rip’s response was weak, but it was there. “I ain’t your son.”

Mutt had seen enough. “His name is Ripley and he just ain’t that smart so keep them questions simple.” The paramedic looked up at Mutt.

“Who are you?”

“He is my son… I am his dad.”

“Oh.” The paramedic was clearly not impressed. “ We are going to stabilize his neck and get him to a hospital so we can check for damage.”

“He don’t need to go to no hospital, he has been in wrecks before!” Mutt was voted down.

The paramedics loaded up Ripley and turned to Mutt.

“Come on… we will need you at the hospital.” Mutt climbed into the ambulance.

Ripley had regained his facilities by now and would have been quite happy to nod off on the ride in, but the second paramedic would have none of it. “Ripley you have to stay awake, we are afraid that you maybe concussed.”

“Naw he just likes to sleep.” Mutt stared at his son.

“What do I need to be here for?”

“Well sir… we may need parental permission for treatment and we have to establish baseline questions as part of concussion protocol.”

Ripley glanced over at his dad. Mutt’s eyes were glazed over and he appeared to be confused. If baseline isn’t a medical term for simple, he was screwed.

Mutt’s wife arrived at the hospital to find her husband sitting in the waiting room. He was calmer than she would have imagined.

“Where is Ripley, Mutt?”

Mutt nodded towards a long hallway. “Somewhere down there…”

“Is he okay?”

“Yeah I guess. The nurse said she would get me when the doctor showed up. I have to answer some questions…”

“Larry… Larry!” Mutt was being summoned by a rather large and somewhat unsympathetic nurse. When Mutt looked up, she motioned to him. “Follow me.” It was an order rather than a request. The two entered a room near the end of the hall and there was Ripley, still in his dirty clothes, sitting up in a hospital bed. Beside him was a kid in a white smock that looked to Mutt like he would be more suited to serve ice cream at the Dairy Queen then analyze concussions.

“This is his father.” The nurse seemed reluctant to admit that, but she did and left the room.

“Hello. I am Dr. Abou. I just need to fully understand the circumstances of the injury.” Dr. Abou had an unusual accent and Mutt had to pay close attention to what was being said. “ I am told by…” Dr. Abou looked at the clipboard in his hand, “…Ripley…I must say that is a most unusual name, that he was playing lawn darts.”

“No Doc….I said I was lawn darted…” Ripley appeared to Mutt to be getting a little pissed off.

Dr. Abou was clearly confused. “What is lawn darted? I have never heard of this before.”

Ripley continued. “I drew Two Bar Oscar… again. He is a mean son of a bitch and he is supposed to go left out of the chute. Today he just rockets straight out and then goes hard right. I hit the ground like a friggin’ lawn dart.”

“I am not getting this.” Dr. Abou looked to Mutt for help.

“That’s pretty much it Doc.” Mutt made an arcing motion with his hand that ended with Mutt slapping his right hand into the palm of his left. “Splat, head first, just

like a lawn dart. Look, is this gonna take long? We gotta get back.”

“Just a few more questions Ripley.” Dr. Abou was shining a small flashlight into Ripley’s eyes. “Do you know what day it is?”

“Nope. I know I was up in the High School perf this afternoon, I am in the slack at Lone Pine tonight, then two more perfs at the High School on Saturday and Sunday. Oh! It must be Friday.”

Dr. Abou was staring at the clipboard. He had just heard Ripley speak and the only word he understood was ‘Friday’. The rest appeared to be some gibberish that only the locals could understand. His hospital’s concussion protocol was clearly not going to be followed, his concern for the young man’s health was of no concern to the father and he was at the end of his shift.

“I would recommend that there be no more ‘lawn darting’ for this young man. I do not know what a Two Bar Oscar is or why his direction of travel would be a concern of this young man, but I strongly urge you sir, as his father, to exercise some caution and limit the activities of your son to something less vigorous for the next week or so. Do you understand?”

“If I say yes can we go?” Mutt was looking at his watch and making some mental calculations as far as travel times.

“Yes, you can go if you understand the risks involved in this sort of activity…” Dr. Abou stopped speaking. Ripley had leapt off the bed at ‘yes’ and had ran past his father and down the hall.

Mutt was backing out of the room. “Thanks Doc.” Ripley was bucked off at Lone Pine, but he landed on his butt and he won the High School Rodeo with rides on Saturday and Sunday. Ryder won Lone Pine and ended up in second at the High School Rodeo, just behind his brother.

Dr. Abou asked for and was granted a transfer.

Grant Rolston was born and raised in ranching country near Penticton, British Columbia.

After graduating school, he worked on a purebred Hereford ranch, then assumed a position at Western Breeders Artificial Insemination Unit. In 1980, he left the livestock scene and joined the Edmonton Police Department, where he received his formal training in photography, working for the IDENT unit (crime scene investigation). After a decade, he returned to the industry, purchasing a herd of purebred Angus cattle but both Grant and his wife, Lauralee, worked off the ranch to make a living. He chose livestock photography and is now Canada’s premier livestock photographer of beef cattle. Grant and Lauralee travel throughout nine provinces in Canada for on farm photography, in addition to all major livestock shows, including the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, the Canadian Western Agribition and all major National Junior shows in the summer months. Grant and Lauralee Rolston reside in Vulcan, Alberta. With four decades of experience, Grant shares things that are “Not Taken for Granted.”

Canadian Hereford Association Summer Update Congratulations on another very successful Bonanza and Hereford Week in Canada! Anyone that has been involved with organizing or volunteering for a Bonanza knows that this is no small task. Thank you to everyone that played a part in the 40th Anniversary of Bonanza; it was a tremendous event!

During the week of Bonanza, the leadership of the CHA, CJHA and KGF had meetings and workshops.

The KGF hosted a seminar to help educate members on the sensitive, but very important topic, of succession planning. Thanks to the KGF trustees for providing this educational opportunity on a topic that is so pertinent to the industry.

The CJHA held their summer National Council meetings and covered budgeting, marketing, fundraising and a discussion surrounding the rules and regulations that encompass Bonanza.

Bonanza has always been a youth show for the youth, and the CJHA board is striving to maintain the focus on this model. However, with the increase in younger or less experienced CJHA members, the council is looking to incorporating new rules that allow more adult involvement. This year adults were able to lend a hand to a larger extent than they have in the past, and the feed-back was great. For Bonanza 2020, the rules will be similar, and even a little more liberal for that of parent involvement. The CJHA doesn’t want to have parents grooming or fitting cattle, but they feel that to encourage younger, less experienced members to come take part in Bonanza, there must be some level of parent involvement allowed to ensure the safety and fun of all participants. The CJHA asks adult members to not abuse these rule changes as Bonanza has a legacy of being a great learning environment for the CJHA members.

The committee recognizes that engaging youth, and exposing new youth to the Hereford breed has great meaning to the future of the breed.

The CHA Board is engaged in gathering information from the commercial industry on the performance and the perception of Hereford cattle. They are working to gather information to better direct breed improvement and marketing efforts to focus the CHA’s efforts. The CHA board has also given the direction to build a Strategic Marketing Committee.

A committee that will develop a more specific marketing plan for Hereford. This committee will make recommendations to the CHA Board on modifications and plan for the development of new association and breeder marketing assets.

Our next meetings will be held in December at the CHA office in Calgary. At that time, the board will be meeting with a group of cattle industry advisors to have an open discussion on the larger industry and the breed.

The Beyond Meat Phenomenon

Biography: Dr. Colin Palmer is an Associate Professor of Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from Nova Scotia, Dr. Palmer worked in mixed practices in Ontario and British Columbia and has owned/operated a practice in Saskatchewan. Dr. Palmer along with his wife Kim and children Lauren, Emily and Carter run a herd of purebred Red Angus cattle under the KC Cattle Co. name.

For beef producers it is frustrating to see how many retailers and restaurant chains are offering Beyond Meat products to consumers. Many say they would never eat the product and consider it high treason for anyone associated with our industry to admit to such a crime.

On the other hand, it is fascinating to watch. Certainly the sales reports show there is demand for the product and it seems that every week I hear of another big-name restaurant chain that is offering a meat-alternative product.

I have read every article that has come across my desk about Beyond Meat and meat alternatives and I have even tried a Beyond Meat burger (Beyond Burger) and have so far survived the experience.

I must admit that I had heard so much hype about it that I was eager to give it a try, but at the same time I felt a bit rebellious and guilty. To balance the experience and ease my conscience, I ordered a conventional burger and took one or two bites of each product in sequence. From my point of view, if you like beef burgers made with the real thing the Beyond Meat burger was disappointing. The dominant taste was the lettuce and other ingredients used to garnish the burger, whereas the beef burger was juicier and certainly a much tastier experience. I had to wonder if I preferred the beef burger because that is what I had been raised with and had become accustomed to in my diet.

I concluded that for some the Beyond Meat product would be something they like and it likely would attract those customers who would otherwise not eat meat.

Nobody likes competition! However, what can we learn from the competition, and from the launch and early success of Beyond Meat? To gain market share new products must demonstrate they are better than what already exists – price, taste, country of origin, carbon footprint, reputation of the processor/marketer to name a few have all been used in the marketing of meat. “Better for your health” seems to be the platform chosen

Ethan Brown, founder and CEO of Beyond Meat said that comparing the nutrient composition of a Beyond Burger was too simplistic because it doesn’t factor in the reported health risks that are associated with eating red and processed meat namely, cancer and heart disease.

Another claim is that the Beyond Meat burger contains no cholesterol or animal-derived saturated fat and is lower in saturated fat than burgers made from fattier cuts of beef. For the most part, the research supporting the link between the consumption of red meat and disease in humans is weak, however, Beyond Meat’s initial success in the market place seems to be fueled by more than just a healthier-thanthe-other-stuff platform. Certainly one accelerant has been a timely and widely published misinterpretation of Health Canada’s recommendations in the recently updated Canada Food Guide.

The recommendation was to choose more plant-based protein alternatives yet this was spun into eating less meat which was not the original intention.

The truth is that Canada’s Food Guide does not say that plant proteins should be consumed at the expense of animal

protein. In fact, most Canadians consume barely enough protein with just 17 percent of our caloric intake coming from protein.

That puts us at the bottom end of the recommended range of 17 to 35 percent.

Another fact is that 44 percent of the saturated fat we consume comes from ultra-processed verses just 10 percent from red meat. A 75-gram, or slightly more than 2-ounce portion of real meat contains 184 calories and 26 grams of protein. Compare this with Beyond Burger which contains 20 grams of protein and 250 calories in a 113-gram (4-ounce) patty; roughly half the protein density. Furthermore, if you look at the list of ingredients you will notice salt; at 390 milligrams of sodium per patty this will quickly add up to over a 1000 milligrams with the addition of a hamburger bun and condiments. There is about four times as much sodium in a Beyond Meat patty as there is in the real thing. The Beyond Burger contains over twenty ingredients and by definition is an ultra-processed food compared with beef which has one ingredient – BEEF. Eating plants is a not a new thing for humans and unfortunately most of the ultra-processed foods are plant-based. We should encourage the consumption of more fresh fruits and vegetables which are better for us in the raw state. Meat and vegetables work well together enhancing digestion and absorption of nutrients – kind of like it was meant to be!

Putting all of this information in perspective, what is the real reason that meat substitutes like Beyond Meat are able to gain any traction at all? It is really quite simple … the development and marketing of these products is controlled by a segment of the population who do not want to eat meat and they want all of us to adopt their views. In order to get the consumer to buy into their ideal they must find something to base their marketing strategy on. For Beyond Meat to tout themselves as a healthy alternative, which they simply are not, the choice will likely be their undoing. It seems that our society is fine with animals eating animals – thank you Discovery Channel and the Pet Food Industry! A consistent, high quality product and our traceability system are key factors contributing to our success. But what can we learn from Beyond Meat? Embrace research to study the role of meat in the human diet and the value of forage eating animals in our ecosystem. Continue to educate our consumers about our product and how it is produced. Check out our competition’s website and see what they are doing that we could do too. Some ideas I gleaned from Beyond Meat … will packaging two ready to cook hamburger patties work for beef? Can we market new products like pre-seasoned hamburger ready for tacos?

George Atuan, a noteworthy financial advisor and contributor of articles to Seeking Alpha - a publication offering market insight, financial analysis, investment ideas and stock research provided his take on a Beyond Meat product.

After trying a few bites he found that the taste reminded him of food he had eaten in the Middle East and described it as nothing more than an overpriced falafel. George provided seven reasons why he would not buy Beyond Meat stock: 1) Taste; 2) No economic moat – a distinct advantage a product has over its competitors allowing it to protect market share; 3) Too much formidable competition from real meat; 4) A production bottleneck Be proud of our industry and continue to from a lack of processing capability; 5) Low produce and market a high quality product.

Leaders in Feed Efficiency: Hereford-cross cattle like black baldies are able to beef up with less feed.1 Led by the American Hereford Association, the National Hereford Feedout has over 12 years of data with over 7,000 steers recorded. Performance results show 10% better gains than yard averages and a better dry matter conversion average by 9.2%.1 When feed prices are high, feed efficiency is up to 10 times more economically important than ADG. In fact, feed conversion can mean profit differences of up to $100/head on feedlot cattle.2 Maximize Hybrid Vigour: A Hereford cross brings together the strengths of both breeds, creating superior heterosis performance. US Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) research shows that hybrid vigour is greater in whiteface cross cattle, due to genetic purity of the Hereford breed.

Meat Quality: With increasing ribeye size, better marbling scores, and consistently high yield grades, Hereford carcasses are meeting consumer demands.1 As reported by Iowa State University, the docility of Hereford cattle has a large impact on not only gains but also meat quality traits, demonstrating a $62 advantage / head over less docile animals.

Bonanza Report

This show did have the usual junior competitions: public speaking, art/literature, photography, judging, grooming and showmanship. The cattle competitions consisted of the bred and owned show, the semen donation show, the commercial and steer show and the open show.

Bonanza 2019, the 40th CJHA National Junior Hereford show was held in Weyburn, SK from July 30th to August 3rd. The largest youth breed show in Canada. There were approximately 265 head of cattle exhibited by 180 junior members from across Canada and two members from the United States.

The weather was warm and fortunately, no major rain occurred. Every junior member appreciated the 60 meters of wash rack that was available. The tie outs were ample and the facilities were most accommodating.

We would like to thank all our sponsors whose financial or in-kind sponsorship allowed a successful event. We would like to thank the Weyburn Ag Society and all their members for their efforts and being such gracious hosts. Karen McKim and I would like to thank all members of the Bonanza organizing committee and all volunteers at the event, for all their work and dedication to bring forth such a successful show.

Thank you to all participants and people who attended this year’s Bonanza, hope everyone had a fantastic time and memories to last.

Each day was full of youth activities for the Bonanza participants; fun activities for the Mini-herfs (youth Carmen Millham under the age of five) and meetings and seminars for Bonanza 2019 Adult Co-Chairperson the adults.

There were many mixer and fun activities for all ages. Tuesday night, we had an introductory mixer.

On Wednesday night the entire group went over the Western Prime/Cowtown for some games, treats, ice cream, a tour of the facilities, some shopping and a few adult refreshments. Thursday, activities were highlighted with the introduction of the bouncy castles; while Friday had the introduction of the ice cream truck, the pig scramble and the dunk tank.

Hello, my name is Lyal Heidecker and at the end of June and 1000 acres for the 100 cow/calves. About half of I became the President of the Saskatchewan Hereford the cows are commercial with the Purebred Hereford Association so I was asked to give some information numbers creeping up each year. about myself for those of you who don’t know me.

Over the years I have been on many boards and I have lived in Middle Lake most of my life but in community groups. For 20 years I have served our 1990 I moved to the Lower Mainland in BC to work church on missions, elders, chairman and now treasurer construction. This is where I found my wife Michell. positions.
