It takes a village...
By Karen Wagner
They say it takes a village, and Mia Mackie recently learned just how big her ‘village’ really is. At 11 years old, Mia has faced more adversity than most people do in a lifetime but seems to greet each day with a smile. She is one of the hardest working and dedicated young ranchers that I know and is so very proud of each of her animals that carries her own reverse 7M brand. Just this June, she exhibited a finished steer that carried this brand as her 4-H project and won the rate of gain competition- a true testament to the breeding program she has developed already. Mia was recently diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) after years of doctor appointments and tests. Spinal muscular atrophy is a rare recessive genetic disease that progressively destroys nerve cells in the brain stem and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement in the arms, legs, face, throat and tongue. It is characterized by progressive muscle weakness and atrophy of muscles. Unfortunately, there is no cure for SMA, but in 2017 the first drug used to treat children and adults with SMA was approved in Canada. This is administered by injection into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord and helps to increase production of a protein which is critical for the maintenance of motor neurons. Treatments are only available in Saskatoon, over 1,000 km roundtrip from the Mackie ranch south of the Cypress Hills. Mia will be making 11 trips to Saskatoon during this first year of treatments and then will require four treatments per year life-long.
Keep dreaming big Mia, your entire ‘village’ is standing behind you and pushing you forward!
Recently, Mia’s friends and the entire agriculture community stepped up to support Mia and her family in this journey. A Facebook auction was organized by a few close family friends and the support was phenomenal. Donations poured in and varied from home baking, canned goods, jewelry, sale credits to live animal donations (cattle and dogs). Organizers actually had to cap donations at 150 lots! It is very clear that this young lady has touched the lives of many fellow agriculture enthusiasts. All the money raised through the auction and donations made directly to the family will be used to help cover the costs associated with many trips to Saskatoon.

The northwest Hereford Zone
SHA
annual field day Results 2021 Report by Stephen Myer The 2021 edition of the Northwest Hereford Club Field Day and 47th Honour Roll Induction was held August 5th at Turtleford, Saskatchewan. This was the first time the field day was held since 2018, as 2019 was replaced with a breeder tour and 2020 was cancelled because of the pandemic. It was great to be able to enjoy the cattle and the people once again. The area used for the show is located on the old Turtleford Fair Grounds next to the town rinks. The kitchen of the hockey rink was used for the supper, awards, and Honour Roll presentation. The NWHC shared the setup of panels, which use is always donated by Turtleford Co-op, with the Turtleford Summer Cattle Show. The TSCS held their multi-breed cow/calf show and pen of commercial bred heifer show on August 7th and was also a huge success. Nine different breeders brough Hereford cattle for the show consisting of 41 bull calves, 13 cow/calf pairs, two groups of three heifer calves, two groups of three bred heifers, and three yearling bulls. Entries were slightly down from 2018. The judge for this year’s show was Jim Pulyk. Jim is a fieldman for Northern Livestock Sales in Lloydminster, SK, has judged many pen shows, and is well known and respected in the area. When the cattle started to arrive in the morning the day was already looking like many others this summer, a little hot. Thankfully exhibitors who brought lunches were able to find some shade to enjoy their meals and some visiting. I am thankful for the help with paling water to my cattle that day! Once the cattle were all penned and tagged the show commenced at 2 PM. The show was well attended by spectators, breeders from the area that didn’t exhibit and commercial cattlemen. It takes many people to get the cattle penned and identified correctly, sort and move cattle through for their classes, and keep the crowd informed as to what is happening. Thank you to all who helped with the show. Once Judge Pulyk had sorted through the cattle, picked his champions, and graciously thanked the NWHC for having him out there was a well-deserved break before the supper program for everyone to catch up and have a cool beverage to fight off the heat. A wonderful beef supper supplied by Coolige Country Catering of Lashburn, SK kicked off the evening celebrations. The 47th NW Honour Roll Induction saw Larry Albert of Meadow Lake, SK inducted. Rob Bannerman, long-time friend of Larry, was also happy to present Larry with his 50 Year Membership Pin to the Canadian Hereford Association. Larry told the story of some of his first years in the business, WJ Edgar, Carl Ramsay, the Regina Bull Sale, Keith Gilmore, and a snow storm. It is always great to hear the history behind our honourees. Congratulations Larry and may you enjoy many more years in the business. The NWHC is fortunate to have some great annual sponsors help us put on events in the area. Thank you to Hardes Vet Clinic at Turtleford, Balog Auction Services at Lethbridge, Northern Livestock Sales in Meadow Lake, Prince Albert and Lloydminster, Agland John Deere Sales at Lloydminster, Sky Track Ranch at Hillmond, Big Gully Farms, and Standard Hill Livestock for sponsoring the day’s activities.

Saturday, August 21, 2021– Langham, SK
The Ag in Motion Livestock Days presented by BMO were held at the Glacier Farm Media Discovery Farm in Langham on August 20 & 21. It was organized by the staff at Ag in Motion with support by Canadian Cattleman’s Magazine. This event offered seminars, equipment features, a two day Cattle Dog competition, a trade show, a junior cattle show and a open jackpot show. The cattle show boasted cash and prize awards totalling nearly $4000. The Saskatchewan Hereford Association sponsored the junior cattle show and had a static booth in the tradeshow. The booth promoted the breed with a pop up banner and offered provincial breeder directories. By the end of the show all the directories had been given out. The multi breed cattle show boasted 85 entries. 15 Herefords were shown. In the Showmanship competition Karli Myer of Maidstone was awarded Reserve Champion in the Cloverbud division. Lexie O’Connor of Vibank captured Grand Champion Bull with the two year old bull, RVP Globe Trotter ET 137G. She also won Reserve Grand Champion Bull with a yearling XLP RF Maverick 919F.

Registration is now open - deadline to apply is jan. 31 2022 How the initiative works: The Initiative will consist of two payments totaling up to $200/head for cattle, with adjustments made on animal unit equivalents for other livestock. The minimum payment will be $500 for each payment. The maximum total payments will be $3,000,000 per operation. Payment One Initial payment provides immediate funding support to livestock producers. It is simple to apply for this first payment. Apply for payment one any time before January 31, 2022. $100 per eligible breeding female or animal unit equivalent owned inventory as of August 1, 2021. The number of open replacement females considered eligible livestock is up to 15 per cent of total bred females per species. Declare eligibility, as outlined in the Terms and Conditions. Payment Two A second application form is to be completed when applying for payment two. Application will be available starting November 1, 2021. Even when this second application window opens in November, producers can still apply for their initial first payment. Up to $100 per eligible breeding female or animal unit equivalent owned inventory as of December 31, 2021. Head counts may have changed since August. Payment Two will use updated reported numbers. Payment One will remain based on August 1, 2021, reported inventory. To apply, you must: Report projected eligible female breeding stock inventories. Eligible livestock for this Initiative include Canadian-owned female beef and dairy cattle, bison, elk, sheep or goats that are bred in 2021 or intended to be bred in 2022.
