It’s hard to believe we’re already approaching spring. This season has always been one of my favourites—not just for the longer days and warmer weather, but for the sense of renewal and possibility it brings. As many of you are finalizing your seeding and pasture plans, I’ve been reflecting on my first few months with the CSA and the many opportunities ahead for our organization.
Stepping into this role has been an exceptional experience. I am deeply grateful for the support of my predecessor, Bruce Holmquist, the dedicated CSA staff, our professional and generous Board, and all the members who have reached out with warm welcomes. It is clear that the Simmental breed—and our membership— are entering this year with tremendous optimism and strong momentum. It is truly a privilege to move into the CEO position under such positive conditions.
I wanted to use this edition of Simmental Country to formally introduce myself. I am genuinely excited to begin this next chapter with the CSA. Since the announcement in December, I have appreciated the thoughtful transition provided by Bruce Holmquist, Barb Judd, Randy Noble, and the entire CSA Board and staff. Even in these early days, it is clear there is much to learn, and I am eager to dive in fully.
My connection to agriculture runs deep. I grew up on my grandparents’ purebred farm near Beaverlodge, AB, where I learned the beef industry firsthand, showed Simmentals, and was actively involved in 4 H. These experiences shaped both my appreciation for purebred cattle and my commitment to the industry.
Professionally, I have spent the past two decades in finance and banking, with the last ten years focused exclusively on agricultural finance. Most recently, I had the privilege of introducing Rabobank to Canada as the Founding EVP and Country Head. Rabobank is the world’s largest agricultural financier and a longstanding supporter of the global beef industry. After many years engaging with Canadian agriculture from a global perspective, I felt a strong pull to bring my efforts closer to home and contribute directly to the future of the Canadian beef sector.
My professional experience is supported by ongoing education, including an MBA from Dalhousie University and a Master of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School. Outside of work, I’m a busy mom and wife, with a family active in community events and sports. We love skiing and spend as much time as possible back on the family farm.
As you begin your spring preparations, I look forward to connecting with many of you personally. Spring signals renewal, and with it the CSA enters a season of fresh possibilities and strengthened membership focus. If you have ideas, insights, or recommendations for how we can better serve you, I want to hear them.
I’ll close by reaffirming that I serve at the pleasure of the CSA membership. I look forward to working with you and supporting the continued success of the Simmental breed.

Breed Improvement Coordinator for the Canadian Simmental Association
The title of this article is appropriate to the Canadian Simmental Association and the broader industry, but it is also an apt metaphor for breeders.
The CSA works to help build the genetic house of Simmental by collecting, warehousing, compiling and reporting on pedigree and performance information submitted by the membership. Through work with the broader industry, such as partnerships with IGS and DNA service providers, further value is added to member data through the calculation and provision of breeding tools such as parentage testing, High Density DNA testing, EPD calculation and reporting and partnerships in scientific advancement of beef cattle breeding.
From a genetic perspective these tools such as EPD and parentage are part of the toolkit available to members to help build their own genetic house, hopefully by identifying the cattle that fit their operational needs and those of their customers.
I am sometimes told that EPD don’t work, or that they have resulted in cattle that are nonfunctional, however that is blaming the hammer for the house falling in. The tools provided by the CSA such as EPD are like comparing a cordless nail gun to a regular hammer. EPD are much more effective as a selection tool than an adjusted weight or an in-herd index. What is a key to building the genetic house is the blueprint, or selection goal.
Once a selection goal is in place, we can then identify which EPD we need to use to get there (do we need a circular saw, measuring tape or a hammer), and we can also identify what range that EPD needs to be in (how long should we cut the board). A genetic blueprint may not require us to use the largest EPD value for any or every trait, instead the blueprint may direct our selection to a balance of EPD that move us toward our target goal.
Terminal selection goals (where all calves go to the feedlot) are relatively straightforward. A terminal program blueprint demands limited assistance at calving, rapid growth, feed efficiency and high lean meat yield. The tools we might need are a scale and carcass ultrasound to provide the measuring tape, calving ease, growth, REA and Fat EPD for the genetic selection portion.
Maternal selection programs are more complex as there are a variety of environmental considerations across varying farm and ranch environments. In harsh environments the blueprint may drive us to a smaller cow, with more backfat and lower milk. Milder environments with more feed availability call for a blueprint with larger cows, higher milk production and a larger mature size. Fortunately, CSA provides a growing toolbox for these programs as well, with the addition of mature weight and stayability to the existing suite of EPD, as well as ongoing work on traits such as Cow Energy Requirement (CER) and heifer pregnancy. CSA also works to provide tools such as calf vigour scoring, mothering ability and teat and udder scoring.
As the pace of science increases and the toolkit becomes more powerful it is even more important to think about what we are trying to build overall as a breed, but also individually in each program. The advent of genomic tools that can help to inform difficult to measure traits at an early age and add accuracy to our EPD calculations represent a revolution that is akin to adding cordless tools to a genetic selection toolbox full of traditional hand tools.
The versatility and diversity of the Simmental breed make it incumbent on breeders to understand the genetic merit of individual animals so that they are targeting the right animals into situations where they will be successful.
The role of the CSA is to assist in developing scientifically valid tools to help breeders build the genetic house of their own design.
Members are encouraged to look for a variety of new genetic selection tools over the next few months and to consider how they may help you construct your own breeding blueprint into reality.
Jay Good’s lifetime involvement in the livestock industry can be credited to his lifelong love for cattle auctions. He got bit by the so-called sales ring bug as a kid being raised on the family ranch near Alhambra in west central Alberta. He was involved in 4-H and learned about fitting cattle for shows and sales. The sale aspect really caught his attention.
“Right from the beginning I enjoyed being around the sales ring,” says Good who has spent more than 30 years with Transcon Livestock, one of the leading livestock sale management companies in Canada — that includes being a partner and owner of the company for 20 years. “Sale days are always busy and there is an element of excitement, and I still enjoy that atmosphere.”
Good was born and raised on the family farm, Red Line Ranch, which raised purebred Red Angus cattle. Alhambra is about 60 km west of Red Deer and 20 km east of Rocky Mountain House.
“I started showing cattle with my family when I was 10 years old (which isn’t that young by today’s standards), where I learned some of the basics from my Dad and the ‘fitters’ he hired, namely Len Songer and Rod Lorenz,” says Good. “This led to me eventually having my own custom fitting service in my late teens to mid 20s. I also partnered for a while with Darren Paget.
“During that time I had the opportunity to work for Leachman Cattle Co., Billings, MT, where I would say my skills probably honed to their best during these last few years. Other customers that I did a lot of work for and we had great relationships with were Get-A-Long Stock Farm, Wetaskiwin, AB; Tona Charolais, Rimbey, AB; Moore Charolais, Bentley, AB; Hanson Ranches, Airdrie, AB; Czech Mate Livestock, Carstairs, AB; plus numerous others in smaller capacities.”
As Good enjoyed being around livestock sales, he eventually registered for auctioneering school in Camrose with thoughts of being an auctioneer, but soon after he was approached by Rodney James, then the owner of Transcon, who offered me a job. Good joined the Transcon Livestock team in 1996 as a fieldman.
(James who was a long-time mentor of Good, launched Charcan Services in 1967 with a focus of providing sale management services to purebred Charolais producers. Then as other Continental beef breeds were introduced to North America, Charcan expanded its reach to include sale services to Simmental breeders as well. In the early 1970s, the company name was changed to Transcon Livestock Services to reflect its wider scope in services.)
“Joining Transcon was just a great opportunity to do what I enjoyed doing — being around cattle and being around livestock sales,” says Good. “As a fieldman I travelled extensively across Canada in those days, made as many as 300 farm visits a year, talked to purebred operators about their coming sales, shared my knowledge and provided some advise on how to select cattle for the sale. We also attended sales other than our own, just to make contact, stay in touch with other breeders and do some networking as it is called today.”
Good says in the early days of Transcon, as the Simmental breed grew in popularity the sale focus shifted more toward providing sale management services to Simmental breeders. And also in the earlier days, breeders placed more emphasis on selling females.”
The majority of Transcon sale services today are provided to Simmental breeders, although the company also still handles several Charolais sales each year, and sales for other breeds as well, including some Angus and
Hereford producers. “We are glad to work with any breeder that may need our services,” says Good.
“While years ago breeders were focused more on selling females, we began talking to them about selecting bulls and herd sires,” he adds. “In the early days, there just wasn’t much of a market for bulls, but as we see today, sales have shifted toward being predominantly bull sales.
“There are excellent cattle in all breeds, but I have to give Simmental breeders particular credit for their success over the years in developing a more efficient, more moderate size breed that really works well in a commercial cross breeding program. These cattle have excellent rates of gain, as well as excellent maternal traits. And if a producer is interested in a terminal crossbreeding program, Charolais is an excellent choice.”
Good continued as a fieldman with Transcon until 2002 when he took on an ownership role as Rodney sold the business to Jay and Bob and Heather James. They continued to provide sale management services based out of Okotoks, just south of Calgary.
Then in 2011, Good bought out Bob and Heather James to become sole owner of Transcon, moving the business to its current headquarters at Sundre — a central Alberta community about 36 km west of Olds.
Good says while technology has certainly changed over the years, there is still an important role for the live cattle auction. “There is no Blue Book for cattle, so the auction is that place for price discovery,” says Good. “It is where the value of breeding stock is determined. And also we can’t under estimate the social value of an auction. It is a great opportunity for people to meet, connect with other producers and people appreciate being able to see the cattle. Our sales are also broadcast on-line if that works better for someone, but we continue to see more people attending sales in person and socializing is certainly a big part of that.”
Transcon with three fieldman has just completed the peak of the 2026 sale season with more than 20 sales from late February until early April. Most sales are in western Canada although Transcon does provide services to clients from the Maritimes to Quebec and Ontario in the East and to British Columbia in the West.
Good says it has definitely been a team effort over the years to maintain and build a company that enjoys a solid reputation. “I am probably as proud of our after-sale service, and the people behind the scenes, as much as anything,” he says. “They make it possible to provide efficient and professional services to all our customers, buyers or sellers.
“From the feedback we receive, customers appreciate that we really get things done in a timely manner.
This is due to the efforts of my former business partner, Heather James, who set the bar on how to provide quality service. That approach was carried on by Sandra Smith, who took over the duties of business manager, upon the move from Okotoks to Sundre. And the real “motor” of Transcon today, isn’t me, nor anyone else, but our current office manager, Terry Stewart, with the assistance of Sandra Brigden. What they accomplish in a day, is simply mind-boggling. “
Good credits much of his success to the support and guidance of several mentors who over the years who set the standard on how to run a business, provide quality services and treat customers.
“I had such an opportunity to be initiated into the sale management business the day Rodney James hired me,” he says. “Rodney’s entrepreneurship is really unmatched in the business, plus I always admired how he was always such a legitimate cheerleader for our customers. You’d never hear a bad word about anybody from him, and with a positive attitude his cup was always at least half full.
“Also, I often said, there should be a “rule” somewhere that to become a sale manager, you should have to travel with Mr. Bob Wilson for two, three, five or 10 years, or whatever. It would all be time well spent. There never was more of a truer gentleman. He knew how to treat people with respect, regardless, of their status in the business, and maybe above all, just be honest.
He taught me as much on order-buying responsibilities as anyone. I have made a point to pass these skills along to our personnel as well. “Another two gentlemen that fit a category of simply just “good guys” and have benefitted us and our clients with their passion for the business are Craig Mills and Cody Coupland.
These two make it fun to be around and maintain a trustworthiness. Glenn Norton has a ton of history with Transcon, first as a breeder and now a staple of the company for nearly two decades.
“Somedays, I’m not sure if it’s a positive or a negative, but Glenn and I share a “quality”, that being, we will tell you the truth, in a very, very, “matter of fact” tone. It’s usually appreciated and leads to further success. Darren Paget who has been with Transcon for more than a decade, is much like Bob Wilson, as his organizational abilities are incredible. Another couple of guys that I’m proud to say worked at TLC, but for shorter tenures, and I’m still proud to call my friends are Shane Michelson and John Best. “
Good says working with purebred operators and making farm visits is still and important part of the business. He is able to get an appreciation for the quality of cattle being produced, answer questions and provide advice that can contribute to the success of a farm’s marketing program.
“Knowing the cattle along with the people who are behind those cattle is an important part of the services we provide,” says Good. “Working alongside the auctioneer, I can often talk about the program of how these cattle were raised which helps to increase the value of the animal in the sale ring.” His experience as an order buyer over the years has earned him the respect and trust of buyers as he can represent them at sales in their absence.
“It has been a few decades now but I still enjoy the energy and the excitement of sale day,” says Good. “It has been important for me to provide services that over the years have maintained a reputation for integrity and honesty and I believe it is so important just to treat people right. All three positions were filled by acclamation, with two newly elected directors who will assume their three-year commitment at the conclusion of the AGM held on July 25, 2026. We thank retiring directors Blair McIntosh and Jennie Mutch for their contributions to the CSA board over the past 6 years.

My Name is Neil Carson - I along with my family own and operate Northern Light Simmentals in Rossburn MB, which consists of 250 purebred cows along with farming 1500 acres of grain. We are a family run operation that have been a part of the Simmental Breed for as long as I can remember. We are very active in the Simmental breed, participating in many shows and hold our own bull sale in the spring and female sale in the fall. Our family enjoys volunteering and helping with the Young Canadian Simmental association as well as the 4-H clubs in the area whether it be judging or running clinics to help grow the livestock industry. I’ve served on many boards over the years including the Manitoba Simmental Association for 10 years with my last term as President. This will be my second term on the board and feel a lot more comfortable going into this term as I feel I have a better understanding of what goes on. I will work to keep the Simmental breed headed in the right direction. We have one of the strongest breeds in Canada and hope to keep it that way. Thank you to the Manitoba Simmental Association for giving me their support in this term.

Throughout my life, I have been involved in organizations that support agriculture and the development of the Simmental breed. I am a fifth-generation farmer from eastern Prince Edward Island, and since 1995, my wife Paula and I have operated Matheson Farms in Forest Hill, PEI, raising purebred Simmental cattle alongside our sons, Brady and Jake. Within the Simmental breed, I have served as Vice-President and board member of the Maritime Simmental Association (MSA), which has given me insight into regional and national priorities for the breed. To encourage and promote the breeding of Simmental cattle, I have assisted with organizing various breed-focused initiatives, including MSA fundraisers, the PEI Pre-Tour prior to the 2026 Canadian Simmental Association Convention, Simmental pasture tours and promotional materials.
I have also been involved in 4-H at multiple levels. Provincially, I served on the executive committee and board, held the role of Treasurer, and chaired volunteer screening. I served as a Trustee on the PEI 4-H Trust, advising on the allocation of funds for programs and opportunities for 4-H members and volunteer leaders. At the district level, I served on the Eastern PEI District 4-H Council executive committee and as Chair. Locally, I led the Grand River 4-H Club as Club Leader and Beef Leader for many years. Beyond 4-H, I have served as a Board Director and Infrastructure Project Committee Chair with the Provincial Plowing Match and Agricultural Fair Inc., where I currently sit on the Beef Show Committee and Elimination Draw Fundraiser Committee. As a Simmental breeder, I am a regular consigner of bulls to the Maritime Beef Testing Society and heifers to the Atlantic Alliance Production Sales. These experiences have reinforced the important role that both commercial and purebred producers play in driving demand and shaping the breed’s direction. Our cattle have been exhibited throughout the Maritimes and at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, and have been sold within the Atlantic provinces as well as in Ontario and Saskatchewan. In addition to my agricultural and volunteer experience, I have 30 years of experience in marketing and communications.
Jody Woytiuk and his family live on his grandparents original homestead in Shell Lake, Sask. Located just 2 miles from the main farm yard “Crossroad Farms” where his parents reside. He and his parents started in the purebred industry in the late 1990s. Today, along with his wife, 4 kids and parents, they run approximately 270 Fullblood, Red and Black Simmental cows.
Jody has previously served on the Saskatchewan Simmental Association Board and would be excited to contribute his experience and perspective to the CSA Board. The Crossroads Family host an annual Bull Sale on the farm in February and sell females at the Border City Sale in December.

This is an age-old problem that does seem to be improving with time. First off, we have to look at the number of seats available for veterinary students in general. Currently there are the two veterinary schools in Western Canada and three in the East. Calgary has 50 students per class but was just started to increase to 100 with this year’s freshman class. What that means is in 3 years there will be an additional 50 graduating veterinarians in Calgary who could go anywhere in Canada to practice.
The admission process is changing slightly with more weighing on the interview and essay questions, references, etc. Marks still gets you the interview, and the interview gets you in. I think this may put rural students on a more even playing field. My experience is that all rural kids need to leave home for university and overall, there is an acclimatization time to get used to the big city. I have met over my career many promising sons and daughters of cattle producers, purebred seedstock producers as well as those from acreages with a real interest, aptitude and skill level for production animal practice. The sad thing, even though they were all good students and getting decent grades, the competition is so keen that exceptional marks were often required. Now that is getting equilibrated and we will see applicants in Calgary from all walks of life and location in Alberta. I believe the same sort of thing is happening at other veterinary schools. If you know of someone seeking a career choice in vet medicine whether it be a family member, relative or neighbour, please encourage them and point them initially to getting mentored by a local veterinarian preferably to show them the process.
I saw one veterinarian in a similar article to this saying about hiring veterinarians with a certain skill level was difficult. I would argue their skill level is generally quite high from the veterinary schools in Canada. That is evident by the scores in the National licensing exams. What they lack is experience and that is why Calgary students spend almost their entire year out in clinical practices as work experience, and they are marked and evaluated on this. They may of course lack experience but with proper mentorship at the clinics they are hired at can be quickly overcome in almost all cases. I have personally been more than impressed with the recent graduates entering large or mixed animal practices. The issue is really there are not enough of them, and this is getting rectified.
The other issue is that they may gravitate away from the province they grew up in. Many Saskatchewan students that are trained in Saskatoon gravitate to other provinces which is probably not totally fair when the Saskatchewan government coffers subsidized their education. Currently there is no mandate to work in the province that helped with your education and veterinary graduates have a multitude of reasons to go where they do. From the type of practice situation, job opportunity, climate, wages and benefits offered. They may be following a spouse or significant other, but the vast majority do go back to their home province at least initially.
There are several reasons I am telling you all this. These days, especially in the purebred business some veterinarians specialize in embryo transfer, others do lots of semen evaluating over a large area. Some even get their hands in synchronized breeding. The clinic I was affiliated with one veterinarian has taken a real interest in lameness and feet related problems. Some practices even don’t do regulatory work such as export testing, others promote it. Veterinarians are doing herd health and now telemedicine or phone consultation can help in specific situations.
Lots of obstetrical cases and individual animal medicine are done in most clinics. I would suggest that the clinics that are busy promote and follow through with both health and preventative medicine as well as individual animal medicine. They also need to make some arrangements for emergencies.
You as a producer/purebred breeder often use veterinarians that are local and have the expertise and are available for the things you need. If there are specific surgical or medical requests beyond what they feel competent in a referral to another clinic or veterinarian within the clinic can happen. You generally will find the veterinary community is small and they can pool resources to get what’s best for your purebred stock. We often work hand in hand with nutritionist’s foot trimmers, AI specialists and by that, I mean artificial insemination not artificial intelligence.
The beauty these days is you can take videos and pictures and send them to your herds veterinarian and their clinic to help you with your decision. What is imperative is having that trusting relationship. Then your veterinarian can decide whether treatment by yourself or having the patient examined or being brought into a clinic can be done. Some things are obvious and yet others require a close examination and testing in some cases to confirm the diagnosis. If you are new to the industry or in an isolated area or your veterinarian has just retired, talk to fellow breeder’s neighbors as to their veterinary choice. The choice is ultimately yours of course but there is also more collaboration between clinics and using a technician who runs answering service is helping the workload.
The great news is as more and more work is required of veterinarians; more are going to be graduating to meet that need. Clinics in some areas are sharing calls or covering for each other in other ways. In the more remote areas, ambulatory or locum vets are covering. Out in the field I hear more and more satisfaction in the veterinary service. For the one thing I still do which is freeze “owners use only semen” we as a group will help each other out if get overloaded because the big demand happens over two weeks. If having issues accessing a veterinarian reach out to the Simmental association, veterinary association in your province or talk to your other professionals and I am sure they will come up with a fit to your operation. To me the philosophy of the producer and veterinarian needs to match, and you will have a great long-term vet-client relationship.

The public comment period for the Beef Cattle Code of Practice (Beef Code or the Code) is open April 13 through June 12 at www.nfacc.ca/codes-of-practice/beef-cattle. The Beef Code outlines expected and recommended animal care practices for beef cattle and undergoes a regular review process.
The public comment period is an opportunity for anyone who has an interest in how beef cattle are raised in Canada, including consumers, veterinarians, foodservice professionals, and producers, to review the draft content and share feedback. Feedback gathered through the public comment period is critical and helps determine the content of the final document. Strong producer feedback from all regions of Canada is an important step in this process.
The Beef Code is meant to drive continuous improvement in animal welfare and is built to be scientifically informed, practical, and reflect societal expectations for responsible farm animal care. The Code uses an outcome-based approach that focuses on achieving successful standards while allowing for flexibility in how these outcomes are met rather than dictating exact processes or methods. The National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) (www.nfacc.ca) oversees Code of Practice development and review through a structured, multistakeholder process that includes producers, veterinarians, scientists, transporters, processors, retailers, government, and animal welfare representatives. CCA is a member of NFACC and serves as the national commodity organization responsible for initiating the code review process for its sector. Decisions are science-informed and consensus-based.
The review process involves two committees: the Code Development Committee and Scientific Committee. The Code Development Committee updates the Code if required and the Scientific Committee reviews literature to determine priority welfare issues, and summarizes the available research for the Code Committee.
Science-informed, industry leadership on code development, reviews, and revisions ensures a code that reflects an animal care standard that is grounded in practicality while considering the diversity of Canadian beef cattle producers.
Maintaining an up-to-date Code informs potential policy conversations with industry expertise backed by science and prevents rules written by people far from primary production. A current Code can help inform policy by showing what’s workable and already in place, providing helpful context and a frame of reference on acceptable practices and standards of care in Canada. The content and layout of the draft code available for public comment remains largely consistent with the current Code (www.nfacc.ca/codes-of-practice/beef-cattle).
The proposed draft incorporates new scientific evidence and updated practices in beef cattle care. The code committee uses a consensus-based process to propose changes. The draft code changes have been suggested with consideration for scientific evidence, societal expectations, and feasibility to adopt in a wide variety of regions and production systems.
There are six chapters in the Code. Key topics of interest to producers are highlighted here. Producers are encouraged to review the document in full to provide feedback.
Animal Environment
• New section on mud and moisture to describe welfare impacts of mud and moisture, including reduced coat insulation and foot health problems
• An emphasis on the importance of safe, low-stress cattle movement that protects both cattle and handlers
• Considerations for housing severely sick or injured cattle
Feed and Water
• Stronger guidance on feed and water testing, toxic feeds, feed bunk management, and use of nutritionists
• Proactive action to address cattle in poor and declining body condition scores
• Additional detail added on proactive strategies to manage use of snow as a water source
Animal Health
• Detailed guidance around veterinary care and herd health management, disease reporting, and emergency preparedness
• Emphasizes the importance of an active Veterinary-ClientPatient Relationship, working with a veterinarian, and developing and regularly updating a herd health program
• New subsections on reproductive disease, neurologic disease, and pink eye
Animal Husbandry
• Increased information on low-stress handling and behavioural signs of stress
• Prod use language clarified
• New requirements for prompt care, safe handling, and access to feed and water for non-ambulatory cattle
• Increased requirements to provide pain control for painful procedures provided in consultation with a veterinarian
• Attention drawn to importance of increased monitoring around weaning, and new content on pre-weaning, weaning, and post-weaning periods
Transportation
• Revisions to align requirements with updated transport regulations and remove duplications
• Focus on assessing fitness for transport and enhanced guidance around preparations for transport
On-Farm Euthanasia
• More practical, clear guidance for euthanasia methods and decision making, including increasing specificity around appropriate firearms and ammunition for different classes of cattle
• Updates to include references to farmer-specific mental health resources

With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of Brent Dunn Stewart, on March 3, 2026, at the age of 67.
Brent was born March 25, 1958, in Russell, Manitoba. He was the third of four children (three sons, and one daughter) born to Bob and Bonnie (Dunn) Stewart. He grew up on their family farm –“Primrose Hereford Farm”- alongside his grandparents Watson and Florence Dunn, as well as his Uncle Mervyn and Aunt Shirley Dunn and their five children. Brent spent his life surrounded by cattle, friends and family.
In 1979, Stewart Cattle Co was formed. Brent and Dale met through the cattle industry and were married in 1983. They built a career in the cattle business, raising several different breeds including Hereford, Salers, Charolais and in the end Angus and Simmental cattle. They were so happy to welcome their daughter Kelsey into their lives in 1989.
Brent held a deep and abiding passion for the cattle industry, finding great joy in the dedication and discipline of raising and showing quality livestock. Countless hours were spent in the barn and on the road, preparing cattle for the show ring, where his commitment, keen eye, and pride in his herd was always evident. He valued not only the pursuit of excellence, but also the friendships and community built through all the years of showing cattle across Canada.
Above all, Brent cherished his family, who were the center of his life and greatest source of pride. What he loved the most in life was being Papa Brent to his two grandchildren, Brance and Blair. He spoke of them with endless pride and affection, often joking that he had one bull and one heifer – a reflection of both his sense of humor and his deep roots in the cattle industry. Brent and Dale travelled numerous miles to Alberta and back visiting them. His love, guidance, and steady presence will be deeply missed and forever carried in the hearts of his family.
Brent is survived by his daughter Kelsey (Tyler) Thompson, and grandchildren Brance and Blair Thompson. His sister Marilyn StewartFoster as well as his brothers and sisters in law. His many cousins who were like brothers and sisters as well as many nieces and nephews. Brent is predeceased by his wife, Dale Stewart, parents Robert (Bob) and Bonnie Stewart, brothers Brad Stewart and Bruce Stewart, and niece Marley Stewart.
