Welcome from C&T
Here we are already, the 9th annual sale. Its seems like only yesterday that we were winding Bob Bestrop up for the first Take the Next Step Sale. It is still as exciting putting this one together as the first one was. I need to thank Tina and Kurt for putting up with me as their dedication and input certainly makes my life easier. The Nicholas family again bring a strong group of 6 breds and 2 fancy heifer calves. These are big, stout females with a great set of numbers to back them up. Also congratulations to Emma for her Champion steer at the Milestone Achievement day with her crossbred Hereford steer! Phantom Creek has a large selection of 14 breds and 2 showy heifer calves. These females are sired by and carry the service of some of the leading sires available today. Congratulations to Doug and Wanda for raising the Senior Champion Yearling Female shown by Steven Pritchard at the World Hereford Conference. Here at C & T it has been busy as usual but we always take the time out every week to follow our Riders. Some weeks are easier than others but we always hang on to the bandwagon! We have consigned 10 breds and 4 show-halter ready heifer calves. We think it is as strong a group as ever. The bred females from all partners will be sound, functional cows, ready to work in any environment. The heifer calves have been selected with the Juniors in mind as we look forward to Bonanza 2013 down the road in Brandon. We would be more than happy to work with you in developing these calves for next summer if you would like. Juniors purchasing a heifer calf will get a 10% discount. Be sure to talk to us or any of the sale staff about your selections. We would be happy to help you out. And……… As always………. the Riders Final standings……. 9 wins/9 losses. Building for the 2013 Grey Cup in Regina.

From the desk at T Bar...
As “Take the Next Step” enters its ninth year, we find the hills of the Moose Mountains green for the second year in a row. This has been a welcomed change, as feed and forage levels are regained not only in Arcola but Swift Current and Milestone. For those of us who attended the recent World Hereford Conference Show in Olds, Alberta this past July, one of the most popular females at the event was the champion senior yearling heifer. (Several of us thought she deserved even more.) Well, this is the quality of the programs involved in the “Next Step Sale.”
Take The Next Step Ninth Annual Production Sale
5:00 PM Saturday, October 20, 2012 At Right Cross Ranch Sale Barn, Kisbey, SK (5 kms South of Kisbey on HWY 605 and 4 kms West)
The 2012 offering features a powerful group of bred females, diverse in genetics make-up (merely because they come from three different programs) and phenotype. Many carry services of the industry’s newest leading sires. The handful of heifer calves in the offering are dual in nature...destined to make great brood matrons and capable of being competitive before they get into the production phase.
Sale Day Phones: 306-462-4440 Sale Barn 306-221-2711 Ted 306-220-5006 Chris Poley 403-556-0515 Craig 306-577-7370 Chris Lees 306-577-1238 Tina 306-421-8318 Kurt 306-436-7300 Chad 306-741-1265 Doug 918-760-1550 Dale 605-490-1513 Mark 308-730-1396 Levi
Each breeding operation involved has solid bull markets and is involved in the commercial sector of the livestock industry. This knowledge and association with that sector is used in the selection, culling and production of their product. They know what the industry requires and they strive to achieve these requirements. It’s been a traumatic summer for Chris...with Tina at hockey schools and him having to play dual roles and the “Green and White” getting their “butts kicked,” the summer season was quick to pass, but I am certain that “football analyst” Lees will have a new prediction sale day. One prediction we can make with certainty is that the cattle industry is in the “boom years” cycle. Inventories in North America are at 1950’s levels and since we are not like hogs or poultry, the rebuilding process will take years.

She is clean fronted, stout and very fancy. Her beautiful uddered Warrior mother is fast becoming a favorite here at C&T. We used her 2011 bull this year. Building Nazdac, Bright Future and Warrior into her pedigree guarantees top quality production. She will be exciting to watch develop and has amazing stats to back that up! BW: 84 lbs. (PE) EPDS BW 5.4 WW 44.9 YW 77.3 MM 18 TM 40.4 We believe these Western daughters are going to be super cows. They start out as “ok” and then come on gangbusters. I can only imagine what they will look like next year but I know it will be powerful. We should be keeping this calf as we lost her mother on September 1, 2012. The Touchwood cow was one of the most easy doing and heaviest milking cows we had on the farm. It was a tough loss. There is no doubt 17Z will be a bill payer for years.

Their mother, 2R, is absolutely one of our best, out of the Becker 64N cow that has been so reliable, with both these cows having perfect square udders. The Classic calves have all been light weight at birth, fast growing and very stylish.

Taylor 55U is the only daughter in the Canuck/Scarlet flush that produced the five amazing herd sires. After she injured her shoulder, we decided to get her into shape to flush her, in case we couldn’t get her sound again. Not only did the flushing go very well (and thanks to some dedicated TLC) Taylor is strong and healthy and well along in calf. So we thought we would offer a package of three embryos each of the two very exciting herd sires that we chose. Consigned by C&T Cattle Company and Phantom Creek Livestock.

Ultimate has been used heavily in our program over the past four breeding seasons. The Ultimate daughters are the best sire group of Hereford females that we have had in our operation at this stage in their life. The first two year-olds were calved this spring and are milking well with excellent udder structure. He consistently sires progeny that possess extra fleshing ability and outstanding hair coats. His daughters will be the future of our breeding program (we bred 23 yearling daughters in 2012). His sons have been very popular with our commercial bull customers so far.
The Absolute progeny continue to be sought after for their calving ease, curve bending performance and balanced maternal abilities. His dam has been our most consistent producing female over the past 10 years. Semex continues to have great success marketing Absolute semen around the world. Absolute is a bull that we will continue to use in our program for years to come.

SALE FEATURE
This heifer is very correct with lots of natural muscling, depth of rib and a clean angular front end. She should be very competitive in a show ring and will maintain that fresh look on minimal extra feed. Our Untapped calves get better with age; we bred a lot more cows to him this year. There is also a lot of muscling and milk on the dam’s side. A maternal sister sold to Haroldsons last year. Entered at Agribition.

To say we like this family is a gross understatement; these females are flat out great, with piles of performance and exceptional udders. You are going to hear a lot more about this family, through a bull calf that will be offered for sale at Agribition. AI bred to TH 122 71I Victor 719T on May 14, 2012. Exposed to GHC Power 84W from June 21 to August 5, 2012.Preg checks safe to the AI service for a late February calf.
BW: 93 lbs. EPDS BW 5.7 WW 53.3 YW 94.9 MM 18.8 TM 45.5 The youngest heifer in the offering and the only 12W we will sell. He puts soundness, muscle expression and nice udders in his offspring. The 73P cow is really good with a great udder. She was a great buy and this heifer will be a great buy. Her maternal sister that sold last year turned out very good. AI bred to NJW 98S Durango 44U on May 2, 2012. Exposed to GHC Power 84W from June 21 to August 5, 2012. Preg checks safe to the AI service for an early February calf.
