From the Desk at T Bar... Welcome to the C2 Annual Charolais Bull Sale, April 2, 2020 at the Killarney Auction Mart, Killarney, Manitoba. In this new decade, Jeff, Jackie and the boys bring a great set of Charolais bulls for your appraisal… consistent and powerful. The bulls have lots of hair, tons of muscle with lots of testicle and soundness. They are sired by leading bulls in the Charolais breed designed to leave you, the purchaser, more money in your pocket at the end of the day. Whether you are a purebred breeder or a commercial producer, we feel there is something for everyone and every budget. One thing you can be assured of is that these bulls come from a powerful cow herd. For those who follow markets and attend fall feeder sales, you are aware of the extreme demand for Charolais influenced cattle. The math is simple – F1 hybrid vigor, more pounds of calf at weaning and yearling and on the hook. Something which is rarely mentioned is salvage value, whether it is a cow or bull that has outgrown their use, the salvage value is as much as double a conventional animal. “Charonomics” work… just try it! Take your time and explore our catalogue featuring this year’s bull offerings. We are thrilled for you to see what we’ve been up too!!! Joining the line up again this year is a distinguished group of bulls from our friends at JMB Charolais. Thank you, Bert and Judy for your comradery, wit and wisdom. The passion and experience you have with the breed are invaluable and we are fortunate to have you be a part of our sale. Thank you to everyone who attended our open house/customer appreciation event. It was a great day filled with laughs, amazing food and dessert, with an excellent viewing of the bull pen. Jeff & Jackie Cavers Box 237, La Riviere, MB R0G 1A0 Our herd was elevated and expanded this last February with 40 hand picked, ranch raised bred heifers from Eaton Charolais in Montana. These cattle were born and raised in an open environment with no P: 204-242-3467 | C: 204-242-4448 pampering. With over 2000 females, they are expected to do their job on their own at the Eaton ranch, c2charolais@inethome.ca from birth to weaning. By adding this hardy group of ½ and ¾ sisters, it allows us at C2 to offer more bulls that excel with calving ease and the ability to wean with only mamma’s milk and grass. With a later calving date of March 10th, and the young age of these bull calves, we are only offering four sons at this time. The majority will be developed for another year, to establish a two-year-old program for our growing customers needs. The bull pen this year has reached another level. A very uniform group of performance Charolais bulls. Consisting of powerful, long spined, masculine bulls to excel as your terminal sire choice. There is a great deal of options for calving ease bulls, with many suitable for heifers. Ultimately, we work for you!! The time spent researching and educating ourselves about the genetics used in our program must have the true, viable qualities that a cattleman/woman need, let alone wants. Following up and checking in with you through out the season helps make our choices better. Its about listening and learning, seeing that end result and the big picture. After all, we are all in this business to raise beef!! We encourage you to choose from quality, not necessarily quantity. An exciting side project that we have wanted to develop and “put our money where our mouths are”, was taking a group of mixed black Angus heifers and breeding them to our Charolais bulls. This was a resounding success!! These smaller, 1100 lb. Angus heifers calve easily and efficiently, giving us a beautiful group of chrome coloured, hairy calves full of hybrid and vigor. While calving these first calf heifers to Charolais bulls may not be for everyone, we’ve proven that with our genetics, calving Angus cows is a non-issue. The only thing free in agriculture is hybrid vigor! C2 Charolais is a strong two-person operation, (with help from the boys when time allows), raising 150 purebred Charolais, 40 commercial head. Jeff and I take a hands-on approach, working on a daily basis feeding and managing our herd to ensure these animals are developing as predicted. We take personal pride in hard work that results in an excellent end product, and strive to accomplish this together. We don’t just talk the talk; we walk the walk. Our program is Accurate and Transparent. Our Handshake is our Guarantee. No frills, no gimmicks. REAL. HONEST. GENUINE. This is who we are as people and as breeders. Birth Weight & Calving Ease

University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusion: 1. The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%. 2. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf. 3. The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progeny. 4. Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calf have 35-40% influence on calving ease. 5. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation. 6. Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation. 7. Size and maturity of cow influence calving ease. Most commercial producers do not take birth weights. Guessing is as inaccurate as driving with a broken speedometer - what’s thought to be 55 mph may in fact be 65 or 70 mph and what’s thought to be 70-80 lbs. may be 80-90 lbs. Remember, everything is relevant. Increased growth, frame and performance will increase BW. A longer-bodied calf will weigh more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85 lbs. at birth to finish at 1200-1250 lbs. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weighing 8% of her own body weight. Thus, a 1200 lb. cow should give birth to a 96 lb. calf with ease. Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature sizes and performance of your cattle.
