Terms of Sale – Cash or cheque payable in Canadian Funds. The right to property shall not pass until after settlement has been made. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before cattle will be released unless prior arrangements have been made with the seller.

Bulls sold with a “Responsible Breeder Guarantee of Satisfaction.” In the unlikely events of a dispute, the regular terms and conditions standard with the applicable breed association shall apply. In any case, the seller is not responsible for more than what the bull sold for at the auction mart.

Purchasers Risk – Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Insurance will be available sale day.

This year Byron has asked me to write the summary of our program, so here’s my kick at the can. We have been raising Simmentals and Charolais for going on over 11 years now. A sound piece of advice we heard from breeders when we got started in purebreds was, “You guys have raised commercial cattle so make the cows and bulls the way you like them, want them and that you know work for you.”

We acted on that piece of advice; after having raised our commercial cattle from 1992 to 2008 and moving into the purebreds in about 2007 we strongly believe that the herd must have the following: ability to cover pasture ground and grow without pampering. We want to see soundness and durability in their make-up that allows them to do that.

We look for longevity in fertility and with udder structure which will allow that cow to stay around for a long time.

Workability, I want to be able to go out and work with the girls at any time of the season and enjoy my day and return back to the house with a smile on my face. If that cow spoils the day for me then why is she still here, time for her to be gone. Happy wife makes a happy life!

The bulls are also the same. We want to see soundness, virility, growth, hair and disposition. We have a strong influence of polled genetics in our bulls; again this goes back to what we liked as a commercial breeder.

We have been sourcing our genetics by natural breeding with selecting the best herd sires we can buy and by using semen packs for AI from some of the leading industry bulls. By doing this we have been advancing our program forward and we believe this should give you confidence in selecting and purchasing a bull that will work for you in your program.

Welcome to the 6th Annual Built Right Bull Sale. 2018 has handed us a bag of tricks this year to say the least. 2018 has taught us and others how to be persistent, patient, think outside of the box and keep believing and hoping in ‘maybe tomorrow!’ We trust and pray everyone has come through it in the end. We are continuing to raise, develop and grow our bulls on a balanced TMR ration. This year we are working with Bullseye Nutrition who have developed a specific TMR ration created for our program. As always we stand behind what we raise and so if you’re not happy then we’re not happy.

We are excited to see familiar faces and to see new faces for the upcoming bull sale season. Stop by and walk through the pens and see if what you’re looking for is here; you’re welcome to visit and talk some BULL anytime.

We were fortunate enough to find Encore in 2014 at Farm Fair (thanks to Kurt). As soon as we saw him, we knew that he was the bull we needed!

Encore has won almost every show he has entered. He was champion at Fort Worth, Denver, Olds, Agribition, Farm Fair and a supreme finalist at Agribition and Farm Fair where he missed winning the truck by a couple points! Encore is backed by maybe the strongest cow family in the Charolais breed right now. His combination of calving ease and performance makes us able to breed him to our heifers successfully, but yet his calves have plenty of performance!

We found Chuck Wagon on a farm tour at Springside Farms the fall of 2015. When we saw him and found out he was going to be sold at the Alberta Charolais Select that December, we knew we needed to try and buy him. As the day turned out we were not able to buy him but after the sale and talking to McKeary’s, they agreed to sell us a semen interest on him.

We felt he was going to compliment Encore very well. Chuck Wagon calves very well, his calves are vigorous and have lots of hair.

Calling Card is an Encore son we raised. He was a standout from birth and never slowed down. he sold in our 2016 sale for $25,000 to R&R farms of Lougheed Ab. We really wanted to incorporate him into our program so after the sale Jeff graciously let us buy an interest back in him. Boy are we thankful we did, his calves come small but grow and exhibit all the same qualities that we love about Calling Card.

In 2017 our search for a new black herd bull ended when we saw Stimulus in his pen at Rancier Farms. At the end of the day ourselves, along with Hughalta Farms, owned Stimulus for $65,000, making him one of the top selling Simmental bulls in Canada that spring. If the shear presence of Stimulus isn’t enough, maternally he is backed by in my mind, the best black cow family in the breed. His grand dam has sold in excess of $500,000 of progeny to date. This cow family has won many championship banners and a few supreme champion trucks! Stimulus calves to an early gestation with extremely vigorous calves. His calves boast that extra length of spine, excellent hair, well muscled and carry that herd bull presence we all desire. We feel Stimulus has the potential to be a bull that can be used successfully in the heifer pen. He has a big bright future here and I can’t wait for his daughters to start milking.

We purchased Total Value in 2016 from Robb Farms. I really like the dark red pigment he possesses, as well as his depth spring of rib and natural muscling. All these traits are hard to find in a polled Fullblood bull, thus making him their high selling Fullblood bull that spring. He breeds very true and his calves are easy to pick out in the bull pen. We are very happy on the job he is doing for us thus far.

He ranks in the top 1% of the breed for both calving ease and maternal calving ease and in the top 2% for both weaning and yearling weight, making him a very unique bull. When you get in behind him you can’t help but admire his thickness. He is soggy made and smooth fronted. I feel he has a bright future ahead of him.

Our program

Our cattle run in the Battle River Valley so structure is key as they have to walk up and down hills grazing and for water. We don’t pamper our cows; they run like our commercial herd, on grass as long as possible then bale grazing until calving. Our cows don’t get second chances, they raise a quality calf and come in bred on time or they go down the road.

Our aim is to have cattle that are functional and sound for a very long time, easy doing cattle that convert feed into pounds while catching a grade. We use the best sires we can, through both AI and natural service and use embryo transfer to increase our rate of genetic advancement. We work with the Lloydminster Animal Hospital to provide a complete herd health program.

Dear Friends

Well here we are again! Bull Sale Season! We’ve said so long to 2018 and have kicked 2019 off with the excitement of calving; the most wonderful time of the year! All our hard work in selecting new genetics, AI’ing and putting in embryos is coming to fruition! While 2018 was less than ideal weather wise, we still had pretty wonderful year! The highlight of our year would have to be the Northern Alberta Angus Club Tour that we hosted.

We’d like to thank each and every one of you that made it out. It turned into a wonderful weekend with lots of visiting, food and fantastic cattle to view!!

Thanks to our neighbours, MJT Cattle Co. and Pugh Farms for allowing us to bring the tour to their farms and providing libations. Thanks to the many hands that helped us prepare for the weekend, create and cook the meals and the breeders that also brought cattle to our place to display.

Our District 4-H Show and the Alberta Junior Angus Show are always other summer highlights for our whole family. This year Tell, our youngest, was very excited to step up and join his older siblings in the show ring at the AJAA Show. He even brought home a banner! Thanks to all the Juniors and parents who help our kids in the ring, mentor them and help run the programs they love! For the past year and a half we’ve been blessed to have a few college students helping us out on the farm. Last year we had Kathleen Porteous and Kaylee Duncan and this year Jarett Hargrave has been giving us a hand and Kaylee came back to help out at the shows.

All three of these young adults are a long way from their homes when at college and we’ve loved the opportunity to have them come out, help us and become an extended part of our family.

There are many people that help us throughout the year at the shows and at the farm with cattle, kids and equipment and we couldn’t do it without you.

We really appreciate the help from all our family and friends! Thank you for all that you do!

We are loving the way this year’s bull pen is looking and can’t help but think this is the best set of bulls we’ve raised yet. Every year we are selecting new genetics based on some pretty strict guidelines that we’ve created, we cull our females hard and see the fruits of our labour when we walk through our yearling bull and heifer pens. This year’s sale has a new addition with us selling five purebred heifers as well. Our replacement heifer pen seems to get bigger and bigger each year and the pasture we have dictates that we can’t keep them all, so we are offering up a handful for you to take home and put to work in your herd.

In 2015 I traveled many miles to look for our next great herd bull. We wanted a bull that would be a foot improver with big time performance and muscle shape.

One that had a ton of fore rib, big middle and most importantly backed by a terrific mother with a history of good production and efficiency. I found what I was looking for at Johnson Livestock and the search was over. He has an EPD profile that will blow your mind. He was one of the highest YW bulls in Canada that year. We were lucky enough to partner with Clifford Land and Cattle and got him bought as the high seller that day at $19,000. We had to stretch to get him but we weren’t going home without him. His first and only daughter to go on offer was Pedersen Undiscovered 301D and was a high seller in the Fall Fusion Sale to our new partners at Avelyn Angus and Goad Family Angus. His sons were well accepted last year and his first daughters are calving this year with much anticipation and excitement.

The 2015 National and Farmfair Reserve Champion Senior Angus Bull. We found this great bull in the Bar-E-L program. He is an own son of the two-time Agribition Champion, Southland Thriller, who is known for producing terrific females. He is a real power house with a terrific front end and awesome feet and legs. He’s received many compliments from those that have seen him, amazed at how a bull with his mass and muscle could move so freely. He sired Pedersen Confidence 39C, our 2016 high seller at $16,000 to Grant Lodge and Diamond B as well as Pedersen Easy Rider 412E at $17,000 to Clifford Land and Cattle. His daughters are very angular made with absolutely beautiful udders and small teats, level fore udder and ample milk flow. We cannot say enough about what this bull has done for our program and will continue to do going forward.

Espionage came from the Hamilton program after being a member of their Denver pen of three. He is a moderate, soft made bull that is very easy fleshing. We found Just Do It at the Czar Pen Show when he happened to be stalled beside us. Days after the show we went for a look and decided we needed to bring this Sankeys Justified son home to work for us. He has bred in both the heifer pen and on cows and has proven successful in each location. Calving ease, yet has the growth and thickness to follow up. His first calf crop has been met with anticipation and most notably his daughter, Pedersen Andee 60F, has already made a mark being part of our fall show string. Quinn has decided to purchase her and will be using her as her 4-H heifer.

We decided to use Musgrave Sky High in our AI program to bring in new calving ease options. We only ended up with the two bull calves in this calf crop and a bunch of very top end heifers.

They all come moderate at birth but hit the ground running and developed into a tremendous sire group. Sky High is a sire that we will use for years to come, he breeds very true on calving ease and we really admire the front end and shoulder angle in these calves. 1F’s mother is an embryo daughter of our 239P donor and did a great job on her first attempt.

The first calf from our new herd sire, HF Espionage 24D. He has proven to be an excellent calving ease specialist for us. We had this calf out this fall where he was a class winner at Stockade Roundup in Lloydminster. His maternal sister, Pedersen Andee 327D, has been shown the past couple years as Trigg’s show heifer and has many accolades to her list already. We expect big things from her in the future just like this young herd sire prospect. Herd bull potential here with calving ease numbers to go with it. That combination doesn’t come along every day.

Here is a low birth weight, International son. His dam, Vixon 39A, came to us from the Northern Select Sale from Allandale and has done a terrific job here for us. We have always liked the Chisum 6175 daughters and wanted to add more of those genetics to our program. Vixon has a daughter at L&S Livestock, a son at Clark Ranching and the feature son from last year’s sale went to Elliott Bros. This is a calf with a lot of shape and worth some serious consideration.

An own son of 326B who has done an amazing job in just a few short years of production. She is headed for the donor program this spring and when looking at this stud I think you will understand why. This guy is a full sibling to the Reserve Intermediate Bred Heifer at Stockade Roundup and Farmfair International. She went on to be the high seller at the Northern Select Sale where she commanded $10,000 to Clement Cote Farms. 326B’s first calf was a full sibling and sold as a bred heifer to HR Hahn. We decided to flush Pedersen Andee 2W to Bruns Archer after seeing other offspring and admiring the stamp he was putting on them. We ended up with four heifers and unfortunately, only one bull from the flush. However, 25F is certain to not disappoint. He came to us very moderate at birth and developed into a strong topped, square hipped individual. A flush mate heifer sold through the Northern Select Sale to Clement Cote Farms and all the other flush mates are in the replacement pen. Andee 2W has produced sale features in the past that sold to Ross Wilson, Jason Richter, Brad Schmidt, Friedrich Farms and Roxanne Lachance. If you are interested in keeping some replacement females, this guy would be a sure bet.

Muchmore 155A has done as much for our program as any bull we have ever had the pleasure of walking. He has produced a tremendous set of both bulls and females. You know that a sire has done a great job for you when year after year you continue to go back to the tank and continue to pull out his semen to use. The Prince offspring have been quite marketable for us and we plan to use him for many years. Unfortunately, he was injured or we would still gladly be walking him here today. We were very honoured to host the Northern Alberta Angus Club Tour this past summer. This powerful fella grabbed the attention of many astute cattlemen.
