Congratulations are in order to this group of breeders who have stayed together with a common goal... being the source of quality seed stock for producers in Saskatchewan. Although their goal is based on supplying top sires for their area customers, the quality of their product has spread demand and interest throughout the nation.

“Best of the Breeds” is truly a “one-stop” shopping centre where producers can select from one or more breeds simply because the majority of successful operations use more than one breed of bull to take advantage of hybrid vigor, maternal values and calving ease. The Best of the Breeds consignors use the advantage of artificial insemination to supply the newest, freshest genetics in an effort to assist cow/calf operators and customers to upgrade their herds and profit margins.

After visiting each breeder, we are excited about this offering.... by far the best group ever brought forth. The Continental breeds are powerful, high performance bulls whether you are looking for Charolais, Gelbvieh or Simmental (Red and Black Purebreds and Fleckvieh), running deep in quality and adding more pounds at weaning. Welcome to the 12th annual Best of the Breeds Bull Sale.

This year our bulls are more moderate in frame and exhibit overall thickness, depth and volume. Our walking sires are some of the best in the industry. CSS Gridmaker 2W needs no introduction, and we are very excited to offer a group of bulls from our junior herd sire MVY Allstar 61A, the thickest Key’s All State bull you will ďŹ nd. These two bulls provide us with thick moderate framed bulls with tons of red meat, excellent hair coats and great dispositions, all the while maintaining the calving ease that can be used on cows and heifers alike.

We follow that up with a progressive AI program, selecting sires that offer the traits we value and our customers demand. Bulls like Cedardale Zeal 125Z who has proved himself a heifer safe sire and his progeny are very well accepted. Silverstream Geddes is new Australian AI sire that adds performance and thickness.

In this business, it is essential to ensure you are raising the most pounds of live calf possible.

This starts with selecting a herd sire with calving ease built in, and the performance to produce the pounds of red meat by fall. Our cattle have to be quiet and easy to handle as the whole family helps around the barn.

Calving time should be low stress for the cows and their owners!

Durant is a well muscled bull with nice shape. A great birth weight out of an older cow and the same thick hair coat we see on all the Gridmaker calves. Durant has a great top connected to a big square hip that flows deep down his quarter. I have been buying Charolais bulls exclusively for the last 10 years. I like the quiet disposition of the bulls. The calves are generally between 90 and 100 lbs., and we have yet to have a C-section!

The calves grow fast and really respond to creep. With my red and tan cows I get a lot of tan calves with great hair coats, just what the feedlots are looking for. Michael and Annette have helped me out if I’ve ever had any problems, and that’s worth a lot.

Chillin has been a favourite since birth. He shows exceptional muscle expression in a nice smooth package. He is very correct and his disposition can’t be beat. We don’t usually keep horned bulls around but 515C is too good not to bring to town. He is complete. Quiet, correct, smooth and low birth weight. He will be a great herd bull. Another great young son of Divergent 104Y. Performance is what you get no matter what you cross his mother on. Last year, her Roundup son was our heaviest bull and 528C carries that growth in him. Yes he is young but don’t pass him over. The pounds he carries for his age is truly impressive. Calving ease and performance – a great combination, but hard to find! Forden Fairview Farm Simmentals

On behalf of our family I want to welcome you to the 12th Annual Best of the Breeds Bull Sale. Our family grew this fall with the arrival of Mara in September and along with her brothers, Carter (5) and Declan (3) we are now the Forden Five.

I want to thank all those that attended last year’s sale at the new location in Yorkton. We really appreciated the continued support from past customers along with the new interest we received and hope you will join us again at Heartland Livestock.

We started breeding Simmental Cattle in 1976, so 2016 marks our 40th Anniversary. Many things have changed over the years however our focus remains the same; to produce cattle with performance, natural thickness, maternal strength, calving ease and most of all a quiet disposition. Our herd consists of approximately 100 red, black and fullblood fleckvieh females. While we do selectively use AI, we believe in the strength of good walking herd bulls to provide consistency and uniformity in our calf crop.

New for 2016 we are excited to offer the first bulls of our new red herdsire, Erixon Grand Prix 125A. He is a homo polled non-diluter going back to KOP Crosby and an elite cow family from the Erixon program.

All bulls are Express Verified and treated with Pyramid FP 5 Presponse spring and fall. The bulls also receive double vaccination of fusogard for prevention of foot rot.

We’d like to invite everyone to our Bull Pen Open House at the farm March 19 & 20 from 1-5 PM. This is a great opportunity to view the bulls in their environment as well as walk through our cow herd to see the maternal strength that comes along with these bulls. We bought Legend from Double Bar D in 2010. He has been a GAME CHANGER for our program ever since. We have been breeding Simmental for 40 years and Fleckvieh for nearly 20 of those. Never have we had a Fleckvieh bull that puts as much mass, volume, muscle and hair on his calves as Legend does.

Aside from our fullblood program, we also use Legend on our red and black purebred cows. This cross works like magic almost every time. It results in thick butted, solid coloured calves that carry the sought after blaze face. His daughters have very nice udders with lots of milk. Half of the bulls in the sale are Legend sons and they are all good! Whether you want polled, horned, Full Fleckvieh, Fleck influenced or blazed faced there is a bull for everyone.

to those following our program. She is a long-bodied, beautiful uddered DFM Marcus daughter with lots of capacity. We have sold full brothers in this sale to Aaron Bergman, Oakview Simmentals and Twin Heritage Farms. Oakview sold their first sons last year with their Zeus sons being some of their heaviest and high selling.

Once we saw how well Legend and Marci work together we decided to flush her to the same breeding and we got these two bulls plus two heifers that we have high hopes for in our program. The performance in these Zeus bulls is equal to that of horned genetics yet they have the benefit of being polled.

These bulls are very easy fleshing with lots of middle and are sound footed. Legend is very good on his feet and moves like a tom cat at breeding time. Zeus IV 157C carries a little more frame and is deeper muscled. Zeus V 257C is super stout with a square wide hip and is smooth polled. These Legend sons have a bit more birth weight than our other bulls but that can be attributed to the length and thickness these calves demonstrate from an early age. Legend calves are often born unassisted, Marci often lays down and calves in about 15 minutes so one can expect these bulls to be easy calving.

We have three Lynn daughters in the herd and a full brother to Hercules sold in our 2012 sale to Jason Breault, Mossbank, SK. Hercules is smooth polled, smooth made, stout with lots of testicle. He had a gain of 3.4 pounds per day from birth to weaning and was the top of his contemporary group at yearling time. FULL FLECKVIEH: Full Fleckvieh cattle are a strain of Simmental that originate exclusively from Germany and Austria. There they were bred as a dual purpose animal, used for both milk and meat. Full Fleckvieh cattle are more moderate framed, easier fleshing than the “traditional” Simmental that came from other parts of Europe. Fleckvieh influenced bulls will add milk to your females and performance to your bulls and steers.

Lots 41, 42 and 43 are ¾ brothers being Legend sons out of Tank daughters. These bulls represent a key goal of our breeding program. We use Legend on our red and black cows to produce blazed faced cattle with extra thickness, muscle shape and hair. Some cattlemen have stayed away from Fullblood/Fleckvieh cattle because they don’t want white “socks” when crossing with their red or black cows. Thunder 92C is deep muscled with a real square hip and comes from a very good cow family where his great grand dam Minny 11M is still producing at 14 years of age and has an excellent udder. Thor 12C is a powerful, long-bodied bull that weaned off at a whopping 915 pounds on September 19. His dam comes from the Erica cow family that is the most prolific family on our farm and the foundation of our red program going back 20 years. Mercury 81C is a moderate framed meat machine that is square hipped, wide topped and stout made. He also has the lowest birth weight of the three. Welcome to the 12th annual The Best of the Breeds Bull Sale. We will have both red and black bulls again this year sired by 2012 National champion SLC 142X as well as two home raised bulls BLB 12Z and BLB 30Z. Our bulls are fed a high quality alfalfa, brome, crested wheatgrass hay along with barley-oat silage. We purchase a high fibre 13% bull developer screening pellet which we mix with whole oats. This ration promotes a healthy rumen and sound feet which then translates into a longer healthier life.

Champ is an example of what Outback 142X can and will do in a breeding program. 56C inherited all of his best traits; hair, length, depth of rib and large testicles along with a wonderful disposition. He is a loose hided, soft made bull that moves around on a very correct set of feet and legs. Champ’s sire Ace 7A was purchased by McCoy Cattle Co. and Chad allowed me to breed a couple of cows before he took possession. This was his dam 19A’s first calf. She comes from the great Maureen 107M who is now in our flush program. 56C also carries the maternal strength of 281F and Holman 123H who has left his mark in our herd. It doesn’t stop there; his grandsire BLB Wrocker 20W is also the grandsire to Flad Roc M Soc, the 2013 People’s Choice Bull Futurity Champion. I can’t say enough about this bull, so you’ll have to check him out for yourself. Gaining 4.34 pounds a day on test.

Cruze is a bull that you would like a pen full just like him. He is deep ribbed with a wide hip that is second to none. He has a lot of hair, big testicles and a puppy dog temperament. He will sire sons that will push down the scale and daughters that you won’t part with. The Outback daughters are moderate in stature, deep ribbed with the prettiest udders and an abundance of milk. Charlie is a lighter colored bull but is a non diluter that can be used on black cows. Crackerjack is our little red teddy bear; he loves to get up close and personal. Sired by 5D, one of Gelbvieh’s calving ease specialists. We bred his dam OSF 3A to him with the hope of getting a low birth weight bull calf and that’s what we got. Even though he has a small birth weight, he still has some jam. He is a very correct, dark red bull with tons of hair, a nice wide top and hip.

I hope this year finds everyone enjoying the winter as much as we are. It was two years ago that we were in a deep freeze winter, and last February was super cold everyday for calving. This year, tractors start easy, no snow to push, and the cows eat so much less; it has definitely been a treat. The bulls were developed similar to last year, free choice whole brown oats mixed with 32% protein supplement, mineral tubs and hay, and then in the New Year we offered them free choice oat silage. They were offered free choice oats a month before weaning as well. They have exceeded our expectations with their performance on whole oats, but I am sure the warm weather has helped.

Dam has is a good young cow with perfect feet and legs. Last year a son sold through this sale to Everett Pinay. This bull weighed 1104 pounds on November 29/15 and 1430 pounds on February 11/16 gaining 4.5 pounds a day and still has lots of gas left in the tank.

A bull who lost his mother to lightning in July, she was a very good daughter of the Net Worth/Elba 1094 son we owned from Schaff’s. He is very similar to him; long, big middle and a strong top. The last calf out of our old donor cow, and we liked him so much we kept him and used him for ourselves last year. We should have a few calves from him by sale time. He weaned a little farther behind all the bulls due to his dam’s age and pasture they were at.

His dam had a perfect udder and was still sound when we sold her at 15 years old. This cow produced many good bulls over the years. A very good bull here.

A very solid bull that we ended up using ourselves as well. His dam is young and is proving herself to be a good producer. She is a sister to our high selling bull last year through this sale. This bull is moderate in frame, deep and is long from hooks to pins. He posted a weaning ratio of 117, and 772 pound adjusted 205 day weight! Two years ago his brother sold to Martel farms. These two year olds are the final calves from the Iron Mountain son as we only had him for one breeding season.
