Holy Cow, what a difference a year makes. as I wrote this last year it was minus thirteen inside the calving barn and double that in the yard. This year we are enjoying balmy temperatures and least two more weeks of tropical air. With many of us having endured some pretty radical swings in the cattle business for the last dozen years it is encouraging to see the current market. again it is a little hard to make the same comparisons-same range for 80 plus years, 7500 feet in elevation, definitely not. This has been nothing less than a challenge, a new range completely. It started out with the spring range remaining the same and all bets off from there. a complete rewrite in direction, through a new property over the Seven Sisters range unit and then heading all but west.

The cows gave us the craziest look ever! now what! They said, for every step of the way. Three weeks, with five riders and numerous tours and escapades, wow. at the end of the summer we were down 70 pounds, the wolves had contained a few and yes, only a few weeks longer. Maybe it will all be better next year.

We have a larger group of black bulls this year that I am sure you will enjoy. They have lots of hair, are bred to be easy calving, thick and sound. There are about ten bulls from first calf heifers in the mix, they will be a little smaller but still fit the program. The Red Simmentals are consistently strong from end to end. The Red angus bulls this year are primarily sleep at night heifer bulls, made right and still with enough jam to produce growthy calves. all of the bulls are backed by our time tested guarantee. We live in a big province and enjoy customers from end to end, we will do our best to deliver your bull to you after the sale, if not we will get him to a central location near you.

One other small change as I write this book. Calving had just begun here, it was completely soaked and in the middle of the night.

I have had a serious flu for a week and during the night was looking after calves, one of which had a naval hernia. after a couple of hours of trying to get it in, I decided to head to town for the vet clinic… I didn’t make it! I was found wandering around near Kamloops with my truck written off. after a week in the hospital, many broken ribs etc. a concussion and more I returned home. I am improving but slowly, ribs don’t mend immediately along with lung damage etc. Many great Thanks to all of the good help from my family and friends. Special thanks to my wife anja, my Mom Marge and my sister Buff, my best help ange Pawloff, Kenner and Susan, Lude Proulx, Keith Inkster and dennis Gordon. It will not quite be over by sale time.

See you all at the Lake, Ian and anja Mitchell Cattle Co. has invested in the health of their herd of cattle for many years through a comprehensive herd health strategy. Currently all breeding females and bulls receive an annual vaccination prior to the breeding season to protect against all the important reproductive viruses and bacteria including IBR, Type I and II BVd and Leptosprirosis. all calves are vaccinated at branding to provide protection against the important viruses and bacteria causing respiratory and clostridial diseases.

Currently calves receive a modified live vaccine against IBR, Type I and II BVd, BRSV, and PI3, as well as a modified live bacterin against shipping fever and a killed bacterin against Histophilus somnus, Blackleg and other clostridial diseases. at weaning all bull and heifer calves receive a booster with the same vaccines and bacterins used at branding.

In late fall, all cows, bulls and weaned calves are treated with a topical endectocide to control internal and external parasites. as a further assurance of herd health, all MCC bulls in the sale have been tested and found negative for persistent infection of the BVd virus. all bulls in the sale have passed a thorough breeding soundness exam to evaluate scrotal size and shape, semen motility and morphology, and structural soundness.

Through my long standing veterinary relationship with Mitchell Cattle Co., I also know that you can rest assured that each bull is out of a sound, solid, productive cow.

Ian and anja rigorously select their herd for fertility, sound udders, correct feet and legs, and temperament. These cows go to the mountain with their calf each year and come back in the fall for pregnancy testing. Open and late cows, or cows not meeting Mitchell Cattle Co strict criteria, are culled – no excuses, no exceptions. as the consulting veterinarian I am very proud to work with Mitchell Cattle Co. Here is a bull that we had been hunting for a while. The high selling red bull out of a Saskatchewan sale. He has turned out to be Homozygous polled and a heck of a breeder. He is so smooth and out of a great old cow. He has six sons in the sale; lots 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35.

It is not very often that I bring bulls from Manitoba, but occasionally I do. Air Force has a great rib eye measuring 16.8 when he was not very heavy with an adjusted REA of 1.26. We used him heavily on young two year olds and were pleasantly surprised by the results. He has four sons in the sale; lots 26, 27, 28 and 29.

Rockstar or “Fox” as we call him is a bull we bought from R Plus in Saskatchewan for his calving ease and carcass traits. He had 17.5 inch ribeye, triple A marbling and measured 41 cm. at eleven and a half months of age and, as a bonus, was out of Marlin’s favorite old cow. Fox remains in the top 1% of the breed for both ribeye and marbling. We own both Fox and Downey together with our good friends and farm help the Pawloffs; they use them on their commercial herd as well with great success.

106Y or Downey as we call him was the $17000 high selling bull out of their sale in Manitoba. He is a son of the great Wheatland 680 S sire and has certainly proven himself here. He is our “go to” calving ease bull, his calves are born with short gestation. We used him on all of our heifers with great success. His calves have tremendous hair coats are very sound and correct.

Downey has twelve sons in the sale; lots 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16.

In 2014 we welcomed two new grandchildren, a grandson - Foster Harrison, born April 1, 2014 to our daughter Michelle and husband Jesse. Then on October 29, 2014, a granddaughter Dylan Emerson, born to our oldest daughter Jen and husband David. Beautiful babies!

The cattle industry saw record high prices last year, predictions are this trend will last for a few years, Our hats are off to the people in the industry that have struggled through the hard times of the cattle business, and are now being rewarded.

We are offering bulls from three different sire groups: Lookout Wolf 6Y, was picked for his easy fleshing from a program that focuses on easy doing cattle that gain well on grass.

Anderson Motive 1201, son of Soo Line Motive 9016. These cattle perform well and have stood at the top of the sales and shows on the prairies.

JL Gils Answer 2008, son of SAV Final Answer 0035, well known as a calving ease bull, was purchased to be our heifer bull, and has certainly done that job well. We are calving his second set of calves and are extremely pleased with their vigor and performance.

The bulls have been vaccinated with Express 5 and Fermicon 7/Somnugen as well as recently receiving pour-on Ivomec. Before the sale day the bulls will be semen tested and evaluated for soundness. No Angus bulls are sold off the farm prior to the BEST BET BULL SALE. Please feel free to come by the farm anytime before the sale and view the bulls and female herd. Terms & Conditions Terms:

The terms of the sale are cash or cheque, payable at par at the sale location unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made prior to the sale. The right of property shall not pass until after full settlement has been made. All settlements must be made in Canadian funds with the sale clerks before any cattle will be released.

Bidding:

Each animal will sell to the highest bidder, the seller reserves the right to pass the bull.

Disputes:

Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved in dispute. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision on all disputes will be final.

Announcements:

All announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay close attention to such disclosures.

Purchasers Risk:

Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. We strongly recommend insuring your purchase for full value.

Delivery :

Free delivery to central points in BC.

Health:

All animals in the sale have met all necessary health requirements.

Insurance:

All bulls will be covered in the yards by Hartford Insurance; insurance will be available for long term coverage.

Breeder’s Guarantee:

The animals in this sale are guaranteed per the breeders guarantee of the breed association they are registered with. In the unlikely event that a bull proves to be a non-breeder he will be replaced with a bull of equal value. Should this not be possible an adjustment will be made to reflect the value of the bull in question or a credit will be issued towards a future purchase. At no time will we be responsible for any costs exceeding the original purchase price and no guarantee is made that semen from any bull will freeze. This guarantee will not cover any situation where the animal has been subjected to mismanagement or physical injury and we will not guarantee any animal that is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques after the sale. Insurance is available sale day and we strongly recommend that you take advantage of this service. We will do our utmost to work with you to ensure your satisfaction should any problems arise.

Rights and Obligations:

The above terms and conditions of the sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller and be equally binding to both. Resale of animals following purchase in this sale shall constitute a separate transaction and the rights and obligations of the two parties connected thereto are not covered by the terms and conditions of this sale.
