It is our pleasure to invite you to share the day with us. With a tinge of optimism rippling through the cattle industry it looks as though the admirable stubborn tenacity and perseverance of those in the business may finally see reward for their dedication For more than 40 years we have been raising Simmental cattle here and as usual we continue to raise them in a similar environment to that of our customers. Our cattle travel 40 miles from home in the summer and climb to 7500 feet in elevation.

You will notice the weaning dates on the bulls are not until the end of October; this is when the snow or the wolves, as has been the case recently, drives the cattle out of the alpine. EVERY cow here has taken a calf to the range every year and come home to be in calf to our short breeding season. We strive to produce cattle that are trouble free and efficient. We pursue carcass excellence through ultrasound testing and our own carcass program. These cattle are not pampered, it is difficult to find them from May until October never mind creep feed them. We grow the bulls over winter to be ready to work for you, not to be ready for slaughter.

We are bringing to town a very strong offering with bulls in everybody’s type and price range. Once again we have a super set of black bulls to lead off the offering, I believe that there are bulls here that can excel in any situation that you may have. The red Simmentals and hybrids are solid from end to end and there is a good mix of red Angus bulls for heifers or cows. All of the bulls are backed by our time tested guarantee. We live in a big province and enjoy customers from end to end, we will do our best to deliver your bull to you after the sale, if not we will get him to a central location near you.

If you cannot make it to the sale or would like a little more time and information, the bulls will all be available for viewing at home until March 30th, the coffee is always on. If you wish to have someone do the purchasing for you, the sales staff at BC Livestock are familiar with the bulls and they would be more than happy to assist you with your sight unseen purchase.

Mitchell Cattle Co. has invested in the health of their herd of cattle for many years through a comprehensive herd health strategy. Currently all breeding females and bulls receive an annual vaccination prior to the breeding season to protect against all the important reproductive viruses and bacteria including IBR, Type I and II BVD and Leptosprirosis. All calves are vaccinated at branding to provide protection against the important viruses and bacteria causing respiratory and clostridial diseases. Currently calves receive a modified live vaccine against IBR, Type I and II BVD, BRSV, and PI3, as well as a modified live bacterin against shipping fever and a killed bacterin against Histophilus somnus, Blackleg and other clostridial diseases. At weaning all bull and heifer calves receive a booster with the same vaccines and bacterins used at branding.

In late fall, all cows, bulls and weaned calves are treated with a topical endectocide to control internal and external parasites. As a further assurance of herd health, all MCC bulls in the sale have been tested and found negative for persistent infection of the BVD virus.

All bulls in the sale have passed a thorough breeding soundness exam to evaluate scrotal size and shape, semen motility and morphology, and structural soundness. Through my long standing veterinary relationship with Mitchell Cattle Co., I also know that you can rest assured that each bull is out of a sound, solid, productive cow. Ian and Anja rigorously select their herd for fertility, sound udders, correct feet and legs, and temperament. These cows go to the mountain with their calf each year and come back in the fall for pregnancy testing. Open and late cows, or cows not meeting Mitchell Cattle Co strict criteria, are culled – no excuses, no exceptions.

This is a stylish clean fronted rascal out of a rock solid 12 year old hybrid cow, she raises a good one every time this is no exception. Weaning just shy of 900 lbs he would make a great herd mate to the 124 bull that is lot 1.

Long as a freight train and with just a 93 pound birth weight he weaned off the range at a whopping 999 lbs. If you are looking for a bull that will sire attractive calves that push the scales down this guy fits the bill.

This is likely a bull that should have stayed home. His super moderate big volume dam has raised a herd bull that we used here as well as many daughters - one of them is the dam of lot 21. Here is a mid-March calf weaning in just shy of 900 pounds. He ranked #1 for weaning and yearling weights and is still in the top 15% of the breed for calving ease.

107 is Leanna’s bull calf that she showed very successfully alongside his dam in 4H this fall.

She won in Barriere and had the Reserve Champion pair at the Provincial Winter Fair in Kamloops. This big guy didn’t see any wolves and had a little extra feed starting in August but still looked pretty damn big weighing 1024 standing alongside his 1400 lb 2 year old dam.

Crosby Tom Boy 115R and RRAR Foresight 5S calves have been well received the past couple of years. Herd bulls that can consistently produce good bulls and heifers are hard to come by and we feel fortunate to have owned these two complementary individuals. This will be the last year we will be offering Crosby Tom Boy 115R sons. We have a good influence of the 115R bull in our cow herd and it is time to move on. We are very proud of the fertility in our cow herd. If you remember, I commented last year on all the bulls being within 21 days of age, well this year they are as well.

The bulls we have selected for this years sale will be structurally sound, free moving and good natured. There are bulls that we have suggested for use on heifers, as well as some performance bulls that will still provide calving ease.

These bulls have been fed to demonstrate their genetic potential, but are not fat. They will be ready to work when you need them. We have been in the bull business for nearly 30 years and our belief is – our customer’s success is our success.

Our calving starts the beginning of February, and then we range our Purebred and Commercial cattle herd in the mountains from May to September. After weaning the bulls are fed and tested at the Mitchell Ranch. Our health care program is consistent with Mitchells’ and is detailed on page 1 of this catalogue.

Our premier herd sire TNT (LFE 3033R) has produced another great set of calves. He consistently throws moderate birth weight calves. We have calved 2 years of his daughters and they have proven to have a good temperament, are moderate framed, have excellent udders, and are calving unassisted.

Our Angus sired Bull SRS 72X is from a TNT daughter.

I look forward to reconnecting with all repeat customers, bidders, friends and meeting new cattlemen looking to put the bull power in place to take advantage of record cattle prices in the years ahead.
