Welcome to Benlock Farms Tom Blacklock, 5th generation Angus breeder in Canada! Tom’s father became very involved in the purebred Angus business after marrying Alberta May Henderson. Ben had the auction contract at the Saskatoon Livestock Market for many years and sold many of the top purebred Angus Sales in Western Canada. Ben had a keen eye for livestock, a wonderful knowledge of agriculture and was a great source of advice for his many friends in the agriculture community.

Tom has very successfully built an excellent herd of purebred cows at Benlock and with his growing meat trade has developed a herd with great carcass qualities, as well as function, fertility and performance.

I’m quite often asked about the quality on our private treaty bulls. Most of these bulls by turn out time will fit right in with the auction pen. Alaskan was bred by Rob and Gail Hamilton, right from the heart of the famous “Echo” cow family. Alaskan’s grand dam, 187N was one of the more memorable Agribition Supreme Champions being admired by many cattlemen from many breeds. Alaskan’s dam, 112R was the calf at her side the year she won. We purchased Alaskan from Rob Ballantyne through his very successful dispersal sale. Alaskan sons and daughters were among the top sellers that day and the purchase of Alaskan has certainly turned into one of the best choices of my cow career. He has single handedly elevated our herd to the next level and certainly greatly increased our chances of success in this, our first on-farm production sale. Alaskan has a unique temperament, especially for a bull; he’s so mellow and laid back; it was a worry at first if he would breed cows or do the Ferdinand and smell the flowers. Well, he bred in excess of 80 cows between John Buswell’s place and ours in two successive seasons. We’ve since bought John out, and he was just with 50 cows this year. We’ve also had pretty good success AI’ing him to heifers as well. Alaskan is like his sire, short gestation, moderate calving. Yet these cattle have the length, growth and do ability to gain.

There has been many a great herd bull travel through the gates of Benlock, the one that’s never been touched, in my mind, was Dad’s selection of Early Sunset Emulous 60E. Such an even-tempered bull, so quiet and gentle. We would try to move him and his cows, and he’d be like an old stud circling them and herding them back. Finally realizing that this wasn’t working, we’d stop, grab a halter, walk over to 60E, put it on him, load him into the trailer, then move the cows. I wasn’t there but I can remember Dad’s story about when John Grant showed “60E” at Denver. Despite completely out powering his class, he stood 4th behind Grand and Reserve Grand of the day. Dad sat dejected on a straw bale; when Harlen Ritchie (famous cattle professor) came along and said, “Don’t worry Ben, that bull was noticed.”

60E was not only used heavily across the states after that, he also won “Sire of the Year” two years running in the U.S. “60E” is one of those bulls whose quality and character transcends time. I’m not saying Alaskan exceeds “60E,” yet, but he’s the first bull that’s made me think about it.

Wanting to do something special for this inaugural event, we grabbed our best calf and called him Benson in honor of Dad. If he lives up to his name sake, he’ll be quite the calf.

Cousin Bob, the other day, mentioned he worked with Uncle Don (Henderson) on the first on-farm sale which was on June 5, 1970 for dad. Uncle Jock and Uncle Bill auctioneered that one. Dad’s dispersal was held February 27, 1984, at the Saskatoon Auction Mart, not by design it just turns out to be exactly 30 years ago to the day. Cousin John, Uncle Jock and Uncle Bill were sale staff that day but the prize of the day goes to Cousin Doug Henderson who, with the completion of this sale, will have worked all three sales. Doug made sure when the family was honored at Agribition for 100 years of breeding Angus cattle that sister Bobbie and Grant (Crossman) and Shawnda and I were included. Certainly very proud of our heritage, I guess that’s why I’m always thinking about cows; it’s in my pedigree.

We have an old picture of Dad our neighbor has restored for us that we’ll have in the loft. It was from the 1969 federal election when Pierre Trudeau was first elected. Pierre actually swam in our pool; he had to borrow a set of trunks from Dad. After that, if you wanted to wear Pierre’s trunks, Dad would rent them to you for a dollar. Dad was never successful at politics; he was way too forward thinking, and as the whole political scene moved left, he moved the other way. At any rate, I find myself just slightly off topic.

Long and short of it is, it’s a good time to honor and remember Dad. I owe both my parents a great deal; can’t start telling stories about Mom right now or we’ll never get to the business at hand, 17A. Young Ben (17A) displays all the tools that would suggest his success as a herd bull but it’s his heritage, I think, that sets him apart. Young Ben’s dam, 42K is the foundation cow to our Blackberry line. Cattle with the length to perform but the function to survive. Many Blackberry sons sell, check them out; they’re an impressive bunch. 42K’s sire, Ole Saskalta Rito, from Kim Robertson, transformed our herd in one generation adding power, depth, fleshing, hair and perfect feet. Her grand sire, FV Voyageur came from Dave and Dennis Johnston, bred 70 cows as an end of April yearling; he was a breeding machine. Both these two bulls are back in the pedigree of a lot of good cattle here at Benlock. Generation after generation of moderate fault free cows. Young Ben’s a builder just like his name sake.

This is our last year with Taste Test sons to offer and he certainly is going out with a bang, as these bulls are awesome. Tast Test has always and will continue to influence our herd through his descendants. Top 1% of the breed for weaning, top 3% of the breed for yearling.

We’ve never experienced any calving problems or extreme birth weights, and our cows calve without special attention on a section of grass. Truly an amazing bull.
