Beef Project

What is 4-H? In 4-H, we believe in the power of young people. We see that every child has valuable strengths and real influence to improve the world around us.

For over 100 years, 4-H Canada has been one of the most highly respected Youth Organizations – Empowering more than 25,000 members with the guidance of over 8,000 volunteers and leaders. 4-H grows true leaders. True leaders are young people who have confidence, know how to work well with others, can endure through challenges and will stick with the job until it gets done. In 4-H we believe true leaders are not born, they are grown. The 4-H programs hands on approach gives young people guidance, tools and encouragement then puts them in the driver’s seat to make great things happen.

On behalf of the St. Paul 4-H Multi Club Beef Project we would like to welcome you to be part of our 4-H family by coming out and supporting our members on their achievement days. The farm boys and girls of today must be depended upon to properly represent agriculture in the future. 4-H is considered a sound investment in today... for tomorrow. We know from experience that the 4-H motto of ‘Learn to do by Doing’ result not only in development of valuable skills but also in the development in sound judgement and understanding of the free enterprise system. This lifestyle is not just about animals. It is about beliefs and values passed down through generations, ensuring things are left better for those yet to come.

Our Beef Project consists of 15 members investing their time and effort over the last 200 days feeding, bedding and training a market steer project with one goal in mind, ‘to produce top quality Alberta Prime Beef’ that the consumer will enjoy. Some of these members are also involved in the heifer and/or Cow/calf project; the heart and beginning of every beef project. Included in this catalogue are all of the other projects such as Sheep, Foods, Small Engines, K-9 and Cleaver. Our St. Paul 4-H Multi Club consists of over 40 members. We all like to think that we are responsible for our own success, but the truth in the matter is that without the support from our sponsors, buyers and local community the legacy of 4-H would not exist. Sometimes out of clutter, we may find some simplicity. From discord, we may find harmony. But in the middle of difficulty there always lies an opportunity. Charity begins at home. In other words, it begins in the near neighbourhoods of a person. In a century’s time only faces have changed but our 4-H members are learning to love just the same. Good friends, good food, good times and big laughs is what makes our 4-H family so strong. With our Head, Hearts, Health and Hands we as 4-H members from every small town have been giving it back for a hundred years now!

This year has been no different. Unfortunately in early March the Randy Horton family who belongs to the Goodridge 4-H Beef Club lost their home to a nasty fire. A family of six was left with nothing other than the clothes on their backs. Once again our St. Paul 4-H Beef members have decided to raise and auction off a charity calf at our District Show and Sale on June 5th, 2017. The funds raised will be given to this local 4-H family in their time of need. A big thank you to the Trefenanko Family for raising and donating the steer and Robertson Group LTD. for donating the feed as well as being a GOLD SPONSOR for our beef project.

Our members are proud to continue to support our local Knights of Columbus food hampers, STARS, the Children’s Stollery Hospital and added to their list was the Fort McMurray Wild Fires.

Thank you to to Lewis Farms and Agland-St. Paul for purchasing last year’s Charity Calf which was donated to the local schools breakfast programs. Another thank you to Robertson Group LTD. as well as Kotowich Evergreen Farms LTD. for making this charity possible by donating the calf and the feed.

My name is Rebecca Kotowich and I am a grade 8 student at Racette School. I am part of the St.Paul 4-H Multi Club; this is my fifth year as a member and I am currently in the beef and foods projects. My steer’s name is Ruby Red the fourth and he is a hereford simmental cross. I like to comb, blow and lead my steer. This past year, I went to the 4-H summer camp and I made it to the Regional competition with my presentation on farm safety. Besides doing 4-H, I love to hang out with friends, play soccer, curl and garden. I would like to give a big thank you to my last year’s buyer, Ray Makowecki, for buying Ruby Red the third.

My name is Kristina Kotowich and I am 15 years old. This is my 7th year in 4-H and I am currently a part of the beef, heifer, cow calf and two year old projects. This past year in 4-H, I attended Moose Lake camp and was fortunate enough to make it all the way to provincial public speaking. It was an amazing opportunity and learning experience; I would love to do it again. I am also the president of our beef project. Besides working with my steer, Boi, I enjoy hanging out with my friends, curling, and participating in school events like Skills Canada and hiking trips. I would like to thank my last year’s buyer, Rocky Mountain Equipment.

My name is Jonathan Kotowich and I graduated high school last June. I currently work at the Co-op gas bar. I am a member of the St Paul 4-H Multi Club and this will be my tenth year in 4-H. This year I have both a steer and heifer project. My steer’s name is Link and I enjoy working with and combing both him and my heifer. In addition to 4-H, I spend lots of my free time lifting weights. I’m planning on going to college this fall in Lethbridge for a diploma in criminal justice studies. My name is Ryan Fodchuk and this is my third year in the St.Paul 4-H multi club. Over the past three years I have learned more about leading,feeding,grooming and showing cattle and also the features that judges look for. My beef project this year is a simmental steer that I bought from Kotowich Evergreen Farms.I have named him Goggles. He is the easiest steer I have had through the years to train. In my free time I enjoy quading, skidooing, football, hunting, fishing and going to visit my friends. I would like to thank Kotowich Evergreen Farms for buying my steer last year.

Courtney Werstiuk

“It’s not the push from behind, or the pull from the front ... It’s the DRIVE from WITHIN.” My name is Courtney Werstiuk and this is my first year as a 4-H member. I am in the beef breeding project and have a black Angus heifer named Petunia. Petunia is a very mild mannered, friendly heifer that I have spent a lot of time with. As a 4-H member I’ve had an opportunity to take part in many learning and fun filled activities making many new friends along the way. In addition to 4-H, I am involved in Ukrainian dancing, figure skating, curling, and softball. I also enjoy taking horse riding lessons and spending time with my family and friends. Being a 4-H member has been an excellent experience. I am thankful for the guidance I have received from my leaders and other members in the 4-H Club.

“Hello!” My name is Christian Lavoie. This is my 2nd year in 4-H. This year my steer’s name is Mr. Steer. Like last year, I played hockey in the winter plus I tried football this year. My football team even went to provincials this fall in Strathmore and won it. When I am not out playing sports, I am helping my dad with our cattle or I am with my steer, either leading him, grooming him, or feeding him. My brother is still a clever and we are still able to do some activities together. I would like to thank Bryan Muchka Trucking for the purchase of my steer last year!

Hello, my name is Kyle Yaremko. I am 13 yrs old and this is my 5th year in 4-H. This year I am the Vice President of the Sheep Project and I am on the Regional Sheep Committee. I am really excited to be going to Renfrew, ON for a 4-H Exchange and then hosting my exchange twin and getting to show him our farm and Alberta. I am eager to learn more about 4-H in other provinces and make new friends. Off the farm and outside of 4-H I am in Ukrainian Dance, curling, and play football. I am also on the honor roll and part of the Community Awareness Program in our school.I love fishing and hope to get a Walleye draw this year. I have a steer ‘Dakota’ heifer‘Dutchess of Bellevue’ 2 yr old cow and her calf ‘Cajun & Chili Pepper’ I also have a market lamb and ewelamb. I work hard with my projects all year and I really enjoy watching them grow and seeing if they turn out they way I thought they would or not. My steer this year is right on target for growth and looks great, I think he is my best steer yet, he will definitely catch your eye on Show Day - you might just say he’s a Pretty Boy. He is long and thick and will be perfectly finished.

Emily Yaremko

Hi! My name is Emily Yaremko. I am 11 years old and this is my 3rd year in 4-H. My beef projects are a Simmental steer named Dudley, heifer Dazzl’n, 2 year old cow Clover with calf Valentine, 3 year old cow Bobby Sue with calf Ava. I am also in the sheep project and have a market lamb, ewelamb, and yearling ewe. With this many projects I have lots of work to do all year. I love animals so much and want to be a Veterinarian. This year I am Treasurer for the beef and sheep. When I’m not working on the farm I’m in school doing grade 6 work, Ukrainian dancing&curling. In school I am on the honor roll and part of the Community Awareness Program. I went to the 4-H Provincial Sheep Show and Summer Synergy Program last year and won a scholarship and got to be on the Grand Stand at Calgary Stampede and got a really nice buckle. I decided to donate 10” of my hair for people with cancer. These are a few things about me and if you do come to the show and sale you can see my buckle. Thank-you to the Town of St. Paul for buying my steer ‘Honky Tonk’ last year. Dudley is growing good and is really long and has a wide hip and will be nicely finished. My name is Jamie Kuzma and I have completed my first year in the Agriculture Management program at Olds College. I am 18 years old and this is my tenth year in 4-H. The 4-H program offers so many different opportunities to learn new skills as well as learn about the agriculture industry. Beyond 4-H, I am heavily involved in the Canadian Intercollegiate Rodeo Association participating in barrel racing as well as being a competitive curler for the Olds College Broncos. This year I am participating in the beef, heifer and cow/calf project. I have picked a powerful, thick simmental cross steer that will surely not be missed in the show ring. My name is Cameron Kuzma. I am 14 years old and attend Racette Jr. High School. This is my 6th year in 4-H. The projects I took on this year have been Steer, Heifer, 2 year old and 3 year old Cow/Calf. My steer this year is a Hereford Simmental X and his name is Harry. An accomplishment this year has been winning the SPAA ladies banner with my Jr. High curling team. Besides 4-H I am involved with RCMP road race, cross country running, curling and Ukrainian dancing. I enjoy working with my animals, reading and spending time with friends and family. 4-H has taught me many new skills and I believe 4-H will provide me with a lot of opportunities in the near future. Hello, my name is Ashlynn Trefenanko and this is my 4th year in 4-H. I am in the beef, heifer, and the foods project. In beef, I have a Simmental Cross named Tonto, my mom says, “He is a lot like me… stubborn and has a lot of spunk.” My heifer’s name is Clara, she is a Simmental Hereford Cross. The reason that I picked her is because she is very beautiful. During my years in 4-H I have learned leadership, responsibility, and teamwork. Some things that I enjoy outside of 4-H are Ukrainian Dance, school sports, and this is my 9th year being part of the Barracuda Swim Club. In my few years of 4-H I have accomplished so much, I like being involved in community service, public speaking, 4-H camps, and all of the 4-H activities. This year my sister Ashlynn and I did a presentation on water sports for our public speaking achievement day. Outside of 4-H I enjoy soccer, Ukrainian Dancing, swimming, drawing/colouring, family time, and creating new things. I love spending time with my family camping and doing water-sports. My most memorable accomplishment so far this year is placing 1st for my Ice Fishing presentation at our Club, District and Regional Public Speaking competitions. ‘Sugar Daddy’ my Black Simmental steer is a true powerhouse with allot of meat, muscle and hair. My name is Megan Kotowich and this is my 8th year as a member of the St. Paul 4-H Multi Club. I am 16 years old and a grade 11 student at the St. Paul Regional High School. As I continue to mature through High School, my passion towards cosmetology and hairdressing has become dear to me. Future intentions of mine are to pursue a career as a licensed hairdresser and beauty activist. Being part of the 4-H program continues to provide me with many amazing opportunities while teaching life skills that I will never let go of. He is the type that every commercial cattleman and feedlot owner strives to raise and fill their pens with. He profiles with thickness, depth, and exhibits a ton of hair. Fifteen young people ages 9-15 cooked and baked our way through another successful year – we tried some new dishes and old favourites. Themes this year included soups, brunch, casseroles, and a master chef mystery box challenge.

The motto “Learn to Do by Doing” was applied with our older members mentoring our younger members with delicious results! We showcased our talents and held our Achievement Day in December by preparing the dessert buffet for seventy guests at our Christmas party – a resounding success for a group of young home cooks!

Special thanks to Ms. Landsiedel and the St. Paul Regional High School for the generous use of the Foods Lab and all of our parent volunteers.

Sheep Project 4th annual Sheep Show and Sale on June 9 at the St. Paul Ag Corral with the show starting at 2 pm and sale at 5 pm. It is so exciting to see our sheep project growing each year. We started only 4 years ago with 7 members having Market projects and 2 Cleaver members and only 3 families. Now we have 15 members with Market projects to sell this year and 2 Cleaver members and 10 families! 3 of our members have breeding Ewe lamb projects and 2 members have breeding Yearling Ewes. For the first time we will have ewes with cute baby lambs at foot in our show. The time that the sheep members actually have their Market lambs is relatively short, just over 60 days before the Achievement Day. This may sound easy but it is a LOT of work to get their lambs halter broke, halterless show broke, sheared and groomed for show day. They may seem small weighing between 60-80 lbs but they can have big attitude and are incredibly strong, can jump, or just lay down and refuse to get back up. The goal is for them to be between 110-125 lbs finished. We do a group shearing day and mini show, it can get pretty wild and wooly and noisy as the kids learn how to shear their own lambs. Our Achievement Day is like no other!! This year the kids will be judging lambs, doing a marketing competition as well as competing in showmanship and grooming and confirmation classes. Of course there will also be the crowd favourite Costume Class where you get to decide the winner. We will be doing a buyers draw for a cut & wrap valued at $100. Odds are awesome at 1 in 15 at the highest, 1 entry for each lamb you buy! This is your chance to join us for coffee and donuts and support these great kids and the sheep project and get information and recipes on how to cook lamb.

K-9 Project Our canine members have been working with their canine partners and going on various outings to learn more about dogs and dog care.

They work to gain leash skills, basic and agility training, and to learn about humans best friend!

Small Engines Project Leader: Philip Champagne Members: Kelton Mangatal, Kieran Kotowich, Ethan Brousseau, Tyler Mortensen, & Addison Champagne The Small Engines Project this year only had 5 members, but although our size diminished our enthusiasm didn’t. The boys all had a great attitude and were always keen to learn about the different machines out there. They were able to explore the difference between a two stroke vs a four stroke engine as well as take a close look at the workings of a carburetor. Our two youngest members had the opportunity to tackle a detailed brake project and were successful in making it work. The older boys worked on a Honda 350 in which they serviced the machine as well as repaired the starter recoil, brakes, and wheel bearings. Another project was a 340 Jag that had no spark and provided an opportunity to learn more about the ignition system. We are looking forward to another great year.
