Terms - Terms of the sale are cash or check payable during or after the sale and before cattle will be released. Cattle will not be transferred until paid in full. Each animal will be at the buyer’s risk immediately after the animal is sold. Delaney Herefords and/or Atkins Herefords will be retaining 1/4 semen interest on each bull selling.

Guarantee - All bulls will be semen tested and examined to be sound and guaranteed breeders. If an animal fails to breed and is reported to seller

by August 1, 2017, it may be returned to seller if in good condition and in compliance with Minnesota health regulations. Once the bull has been returned to the seller and confirmed that he is not a breeder, the seller will refund the purchase price.

Absentee Bidding - If you would like to place a bid but are unable to attend the sale, please direct your bid to any of the owners or sale staff.

You may also bid online as the sale will be broadcast live on the Internet at www.liveauctions.tv. See page 23 for more information.

Herd Health - All cattle will be sold in compliance with the health laws of the State of Minnesota. Health papers will be provided. All bulls have been tested and are free from any known genetic defects.

Wintering & Delivery - Haul your own bull the day of the sale and receive $100. Free delivery on purchases of $5,000 or more to any one location within a 250 mile radius. We will cooperate on trucking expense outside of that area. For any bulls going to Canada, we will deliver to the nearest port of entry at our expense. For your convenience, you may winter your bulls at Delaney Herefords FREE OF CHARGE through May 1, 2017. After May 1, 2017 a yardage charge of $3.00 per day will apply.

Insurance - Animals left at Delaney Herefords will be at the buyer’s risk immediately following the sale and we strongly recommend purchasing insurance. Contact Art Handel at (605) 391-8233 for your insurance needs.

Registration & Transfer - Registration certificates will be transferred to the buyer at the seller’s expense. Each buyer must be sure to give the clerk the proper name and address for making transfers.

EPDs - EPDs listed in the catalog are the most current at time of catalog printing. Genetic testing for DLF, HYF and IEF is available at the buyers request and sellers expense.

UNDERSTANDING HEREFORD EPDS

The American Hereford Association (AHA) currently produces expected progeny differences (EPDs) for 15 traits and calculates four profit ($) indexes. Research is ongoing to develop traits for fertility, feed intake and docility. Today, DNA-marker tests can be used to enhance the accuracy of Hereford EPDs. AHA blends marker information with phenotypic information and pedigree to produce a GE-EPD. Look for the GE-EPD logo denoting an animal has been tested.

Welcome to our 7th Annual Bull Sale.

Thank you to all of our customers for your past purchases and the confidence you have shown in our program. We continue to meet new friends and customers as we grow our programs and we are striving to produce what you demand.

Our focus continues to be to provide our customers with the genetic material that will add net dollars to their bottom line. Cattle with performance and desirable carcass traits produced with moderate birth weights. Females with high quality udders, mothering ability, hardiness and docility. And, all of this needs to be in a package that is phenotypically desirable.

The last year in the cattle business has certainly had its challenges. In times like these the value of Hereford genetics can shine through. Fleshing ability, feed efficiency, soundness and stayability are important all of the time, but even more when margins are tight. Combine those traits inherent to the Hereford breed with the performance, calving ease and carcass traits that we have worked years to improve and you have a package that is in the bulls eye for the needs of today’s progressive beef producer.

Again this year, many of the bulls selling have GE-EPD’s (Genomic Enhanced EPD’s). This is the latest technology available to have a bull genetically tested to obtain the highest accuracy possible in their EPD’s giving buyers a higher level of confidence that their bull will do the job they want.

You will also notice many of the bulls are designated with the $CHB logo.

This designation signifies that the bull is in the top 20% of the breed for producing high quality feeder cattle with breed leading traits for growth, rib eye area, carcass weight and marbling. There is additional information in the catalog regarding the $CHB program.

To help you with this early sale date we will keep all the bulls on feed at Delaney Herefords free of charge until May 1, 2017. Prior to that date we will gather yearling weights and carcass data at no charge to the buyer. All the bulls will be semen tested and fully guaranteed.

Many of the bulls cataloged will be members of our Denver carload. We will be selling one of these bulls in the Mile High Sale in Denver, where the buyer will have the opportunity to pick their choice of the bulls. The rest will be offered to you January 23rd.

JAMES OLLERICH

James Ollerich grew up on a farm west of Sioux Falls SD, near the home of Pete Atkins. James and Pete went to the same one room country school for several years and then on to high school.

In 1969 he and his brother, Jerome, got started in the Registered Hereford business as a 4-H project. In 1978 James and Jerome moved to Clearfield, SD where they still ranch today. In 1985, James started in the trucking business, with his brother Jerry. In the early years he hauled cattle, grain and fertilizer. But now he only hauls cattle and has trucked them all over the United States.

In the 1970s James met the Delaney family while showing cattle at the Sioux Empire Fair in Sioux Falls, SD. They have been good friends ever since.

For the past several years, we have entrusted James to haul not only our cattle, but those of our friends and neighbors, to the National Western Stock Show in Denver. This has combined two of James’ passions in life; Trucking and Hereford cattle. With the likelihood of difficult winter roads in January, putting the cattle on a semi has greatly decreased the stress level of the journey on both cattle and crew. We appreciate the extra care he takes in loading, unloading and moving our stock. James has also become a staple in our Denver crew lending a hand throughout the week.

The Delaney and Atkins family not only appreciate working with James and how he has helped their operations but more importantly they consider him a great friend.

Certified Hereford Beef Index ($CHB) This is a terminal sire index that is built on a production system where Hereford bulls sire calves for the CHB market. There is some pressure put on CE and then positive weight on both WW and YW. Remember that all offspring in this index are harvested,so they need to be born alive and then grow fast at all stages of life. Of course, we have much more emphasis on fat in this index, as we want the cattle to stay lean. There is also a significant weight on both REA and IMF with more emphasis again on IMF. This index would be used by producers who have a target of producing bulls for a terminal breeding program. It could be used heavily in the Midwest where bulls are used in rotational breeding programs to produce cattle in a retained ownership program or are simply sold to backgrounders. This is the only index that has no emphasis on fertility.
